“Art must rid itself of tired nostalgia! London needs artwork that reflects not how it was, but how it is now!”
A new artistic school, styling themselves 'the Children of the Glow', has arisen from the dark. Their works are ethereal, glowing with an inner light that is a balm in the Neath's shadowed corners. London's fickle attention is piqued – and where public interest moves, the press must follow! As (temporary) arts correspondent for the London Unexpurgated Gazette, Mr Huffam has charged you with delivering the scoop on this shining clique of creatives. Unravel their politics. Rummage in their art supplies. Untangle, bit by bit, the mystery of their muse: the Luminous Miss Sparks.
You've got a deadline, and column inches to fill. What are you waiting for?
Writing: Katharine Neil Editing and QA: Luke van den Barselaar Art: Erion Makuo

The Chariot. Art by Erion Makuo, from The Corrupted Tarot.
Broken and violent, the corrupted Chariot has shattered past all bounds of control. Aggression and chaos rule your life when this Chariot appears. Your willpower may seem to be spiraling away from you, but it's not too late to master your impulses, and emerge victorious.

Book Cover Tips
Tumblr media
I’m gonna talk about book covers! Hopefully this post will be helpful, but first:
I am not an expert! Everything in this post will be from my perspective as a hobbyist writer & artist, with a little advice for those who may plan to self-publish on a budget. I also have a preference for minimalist or artistic (rather then photo realistic) cover designs, so please be aware of that when I give advice and examples of covers.
Professional writers, especially ones going through traditional publishing, have different things to worry about when it comes to how their book cover will look. I’m just giving a general overview to help someone get started!
If anyone seeing this post has additional advice to add, please do so. Also feel free to state if you’re someone open for book cover commissions
Tumblr media
PART I: DIY VS COMMISSIONS
Tumblr media
So first step, figure out if you’re going to make your own cover or commission one from an artist. If you’d like to commission a cover, I’ve included some details below on how to do that, but if you want to make your own cover continue on to the next part
You can get some really good work if you commission an artist to design a cover for you, but you can’t just commission any artist. it’s important to look at:
What that artist’s rates are
If they are comfortable with doing book covers or have experience doing it
What you are looking for in your book cover
Make good guidelines on what you want your cover to look like, don’t just go to someone and say “draw a girl and a tree.” Be specific and keep your book layout in mind, because the art should reflect where you want the title to go.
Commissioning a professionally done book cover can run you up to $300+, but don’t worry. If you don’t have that money to spare, there are plenty of artists on social media platforms willing to take your commission for a lower price, however:
Try to give generous tips — Many artists under price themselves. $300 should be the norm, not the exception, when it comes to commissioning art. You are paying for a unique piece of work from a highly skilled individual but the climate of the internet makes it so that artists must continually compete using lower prices and have their work devalued, even if their skill level means they should be charging much more.
Be nice  — if the artist’s rates are too high for you when they give you a quote, politely say you cannot go through with the commission. Do not shame them for charging higher prices. Hobbyist artist or not, they are taking commissions because they need the money.
Keep in mind the timeline — Know the deadlines for the artist and yourself. Art takes time to do and artists have other clients, so be aware there will be a waiting time.
Know their policies — Please be aware of the artist’s policies regarding the use of their artwork and what they will or will not draw. Do not commission someone that doesn’t allow commercial use of their art if you plan to self-publish and do not pressure someone to draw something they don’t want to draw. On the other hand, if the artist is not known for doing commercial work, it is okay to ask them for clarification regarding it and discuss their policies if you really like their style and would like to commission a cover from them. Their rules may have exceptions, so it’s always good to discuss things in a civil manner.
Below are some beautifully designed covers, I’ve included info regarding the artists and where you may read these books as well
Tumblr media
TEETH, written & designed by @zayafeli
The Witch’s Key, mock cover by @vanessagillings
HYMN, written & designed by @wiltkingart
When the Last Dragon Died: The Guardian written by Erin Lee, designed by @toniinfante (this artwork is actually a poster, but It would make a nice cover & the space at the top is the perfect location for a title)
KAZUCHIYO: Battle for Two Bridges, written by Melanie Schoen, artwork by Erion Makuo
The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, artwork by @saori--art
Tumblr media
PART II: BASIC PRINCIPLES
Tumblr media
When designing a book cover, it’s important to keep in mind the layout of the cover. Be conscious of where text such as the title, author name, quote or tagline, etc will go. There’s only a few different layouts a cover can have but it’s dependent on where you want your text to be placed. Clarity is a must!
Do’s
Have a clear, uncluttered design
The text should be easily readable
Use a good, eye catching color palette
Don’ts
Put text over a highly detailed picture, it makes it hard to read
If you use a cursive or another elaborately designed font, choose wisely. If people can’t understand what the text says, you’ll lose potential readers
Use really bright, clashing neon colors
Often there is specifically a spot left in the artwork for the title to go, which is why if you are commissioning a cover from someone, it is important to give specific instructions and include details on where you want information to go.
Tumblr media
PART III: DESIGNING
Tumblr media
The tone of your story is important and should be conveyed in the book cover design. I think anyone of any artistic ability can design a good cover, it’s just important to capitalize on your strengths and have a good concept of graphic design and color theory.
Before you do anything, I suggest
Doing concept art!
Find a bunch of book covers or art with designs that you like or would like your cover to look similar to
Choose covers with designs that you think would be achievable with your skill level
Look at book covers in your genre
Think about the color palette you want the cover to have, a limited 2-4 color palette is a good starting point
Choose what elements of the story you want to convey on your book cover. It can as simple as you want a castle + crown to symbolize the main conflict of the story being between royalty. Thinking about important symbolism in your novel can be helpful
Maybe try out typography. It’s a useful skill to have for designing your book’s font if you also want to do that yourself
You’ll begin to notice that book covers commonly follow similar design patterns, which I’ve shown below
Tumblr media
A border-esque design with text in the center
Design in the center with text above and below
Design up top with text below
Design mostly on the bottom with text above
Designs that incorporate simple silhouettes that may also have a design within the silhouette
Tumblr media
In this cover I made, you can see I kept to a limited palette & followed the design on the bottom with text on top pattern
These tips will guide you in making your book cover. It is okay to draw inspiration from other people’s works and It is okay to add your own unique take on a piece you really liked.
It is not okay to take someone else’s work verbatim and claim it as your own, especially if you plan to self-publish.
Below are what I believe to be some really nice cover designs. Notice how the text is clear, readable, and not obscured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott, cover by Lisa Perrin
Primal Sin by Ariana Nash
Songbird’s Refrain by Jillian Maria
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
US by David Nicholls
Lord of Monsters by John Claude Bemis, cover by Risa Rodil
Tumblr media
PART IV: CREDIT & RESOURCES
Tumblr media
If you are not drawing your cover yourself, make sure you have permission to use that artwork or photo. This is particularly for those who self-publish. DO NOT grab an image off of Pinterest with no recognized citation to use for your professional work you are profiting off of.
Additionally, if you commission someone to make your cover, it would be nice if you credited them for the cover design in your book, even if they say no credit is needed. Not only does this bring traffic to the artist, it helps others who may be looking for a cover design find someone they can commission.
***Fonts also may require you to purchase a commercial licence in order to sell products that use that font, so keep that in mind as well
Below are some resources for free to use photos, editing programs, etc. Read the ToS if you are working on a commercial product
