growing up with hypno (and eventually warren) did nothing but increase his flair for the dramatic and love of magic

he was 100% hypno's assistant for shows a lot of the time. the turtle thing was passed off as a 'costume'

warren came along when leo was around five or six

when hypno and warren got mutated they (obviously) couldn't keep their jobs so they took to doing crimes to get money. small crimes because they don't want to be a bad influence on leo but they also do need the money to put a roof over his head

doesn't hate humanity (and has even managed to soften draxum up a bit. not much but a bit) and actually thinks a lot of their stuff is super cool

mutating the humans was the compromise she and draxum came to rather than killing them. she doesn't see a problem with it bc 'it's better than killing all of them'

morals are a bit... looser than canon mikey's due to draxum's influence

take your kid to work day more like [draxum voice] someone will die. [mikey voice] of fun!

No but like that blurb about Carmy needing to be held? To be taken care of? PLEASE. Like I keep having this recurring headcannon inspired by your Carmy and roommate reader. Like Carm comes home from work early on roommate’s day off because he’s not feeling good (could be physically or mentally, but knowing Carmy, it’s probably both). He’s just going to hole himself up in his room so he’s not a bother. Except roommate is 100% like “Carm, do you want to be on the couch or bed? OJ or Apple juice? Tylenol or Advil? Soup now, or soup later?” And basically just plans their whole day off around making sure Carmy is the MOST taken care of. And he feels so shit and wants it so bad that he just lets it happen. If we want to go extra angst, roommate suggest watching Heartstopper as a mindless comfort fluff show but then by the end of binging season two Carmy is a blubbering wreck because he’s bi and on the ace spectrum (Carmy has such demisexual vibes, convince me otherwise) and he’s never really told anyone or even fully acknowledged it and he’s been so alone and disconnected from himself and the world for so long and the floodgates just OPEN and roommate just holds him and encourages him to let it all out… his childhood, the neglect, the abuse from New York, losing Mikey…. It just all comes out and he lets himself be held through it all. They ground him and keep him from drowning in the shit he’s suppressed since forever. And there’s no going back after that. Carmy is like a fucking octopus whenever they’re around roommate after, and they both love it and that’s just how it is.

(This Ask got a bit long again, so I decided to split it in 2 again; just in case. I have a problem, lol).

So, ummmm, any tips on how to write 2012 Raph and Leo and Rise Donnie and Leo, asking for those specifically, bc you write them really well (like REALLY well.), and I love them (I love the rest of the boys a lot too though, in both series, they are all good.

Like, besides how u write the 2012 characters, which is really good, I have found and have been reading some other really good 2012 fics or 2012/Rise crossover fics, esp. these of couple/few really good and long 2012 fics by this one creator, and God, does that one writer also write the 2012 boys so, so well. Probably the best Leo, Karai, and Donnie I have ever seen. Though they also nail Mikey and Raph and Shini too. They also write a great April, Casey, Splinter, Shini, and Karai. Their Leatherhead, Slash, and Shredder have been super good too. The Shredder is truly awful, but complex. Always so happy when I can find well-written 2012 (or mostly 2012) stories that writes the boys and other characters so well).

Ummmm, less of an Ask, but I am also excited to read future chapters to see ur plans with Rise Leo and 2012 April! Ask 1/2.

Hmmm, tips on writing 2012 Raph and Leo and Rise Donnie and Leo? I think I can do that

2012 Raph:

- Internalize most of his thoughts and don't make him speak them. He lashes out a LOT but, but unless you're specifically trying to villainize him for one reason or another, I find it best to include some scenes from his POV so you can include his thoughts. Raphael is a character who likes to keep his emotions to himself, so... the internal monologues are very important when writing him so readers understand what's going on. - He's the questioner. If Leonardo (or anyone) is making a plan, 9 times out of 10 he's going to be the one to point out flaws. Highlight this or at least include it - He's a softie, but he's usually in denial about it. Give him kind acts to do, but always write them very subtly (think the episode where Mikey befriends Bradford. Raph comes by when he's sad to comfort him, but he only stays for a few seconds. He cheers him up and then as soon as he sees Mikey is better, he leaves). Don't draw them out unnecessarily unless it's a moment of high emotional impact. Just quickly have him drop off a snack for Donnie, tell Leo (after like 5 insults) that his plan was great, or playfully mess with Mikey.

2012 Leo

- Similar to Raph, most of his thoughts will be internal until he's ready to share his plan with the group. Write from his POV if you want to develop his character, write from someone else's POV if you want to highlight his skills or keep the mystery - Not exclusive to Leo, but this is some advice I read somewhere that works really well with him since he's the planning guy: if the plan is going to work, don't explain it. If the plan is going to fail, explain it. Readers can't tell that a plan is going badly if they don't even know what the characters wanted to do. Keeping the plan's steps a secret allows for surprise and intensity even when it's going well, because the characters don't know what's supposed to happen vs what is happening. - Give him a few geeky moments! The Captain Ryan fanboy in Leo really makes him stand out from other Leonardos so definitely highlight that if you get the chance.- Leo gets more serious and traumatized over the seasons. If you're writing Season 1 Leo, he's pretty expressive and jokes around a lot. Season 5 Leo is much quieter and more hardened. You can play around with that by deciding how much internal vs external dialogue you want him to have.

Rise Donnie

- Go pull out your algebra textbook/notebook and find random theorem or property or mathematicians' names. Let him shout those during his fights - Donnie LOVES being overdramatic. If your sentence doesn't sound like a drunk theater kid could be saying it while reenacting their self-made parody of Romeo and Juliet, it needs more flare. Add some dramatic pauses, make him wave his hands, or tap a button to make fireworks explode in the background. Have fun! - He will insult or put down the people he's talking to very often. Whether that's by calling them a "dumb-dumb" or complaining that "of course, I can't keep expecting such feeble minds to keep up with mine...", his insults are a basic part of his vocabulary. They're good to include to keep him in character. - Same advice about internal monologues from 2012 Raph applies to him. While Rise Donnie DOES like to monologue out loud, it's rarely about what he feels. So if you want to make it clear that he's hurting in some way, you gotta write *some* scenes in his POV. It just adds an extra gut punch

Rise Leo

God Rise Leo is so much fun to write, but keep in mind my advice for him comes from Seasons 1 and 2 Leo. Idk anything about the development he went through in the movie. - Rise Leo LOVES to come up with epic, strategic plans, but he rarely shares anything more than what's absolutely necessary. Remember the advice I put up in 2012 Leo about how you should keep a plan's steps secret if it's going to exceed? Use this advice a LOT for Rise Leo. Write from another character's POV so they stay in the dark while he's putting his plan into action. - He's very full of expressions. If he's happy about something, you're going to know, and if he's mad, you're also going to know. Give him fun, loud gestures! Let him throw his arms out and jump in celebration, or dramatically flop to the ground and groan that he's dying when he stubs his toe. Have fun writing him - Witty comebacks are essential. The good news is that you have an infinite amount of time to come up with one, while it'll look like Leo just came up with it in a second. Rewatch Leo moments compilations on Youtube if you're having trouble. - The same thing applies to puns

As for the rest of the ask, you can't just tell me about what awesome crossover fics you're reading and not tell me what they are!! I wanna read them too </3

caught up on tr s2 and have some thoughts on the good, the bad, and the ugly. spoilers for both anime & manga...

the good

this is definitely my favorite arc in the story, and it's fascinating to watch with the knowledge of where the story is going. it cheapens some things, but i still think it is holding up.

because the shibas are just amazing! i think character motivation might be wakui's biggest weakness (more on that later pft) and the shibas have the most well thought through motivations, tons of pathos, tons of payoff. love them.

yuzuha's voice actress! i wrote husky-voiced yuzuha before this season came out! i knew it i knew it i knew it

also the kick heard round the world! in a story filled with out of nowhere high kicks, yuzuha's is the best.

appreciating how violent these kids are, even the ones that i think of as sweethearts. chifuyu did not hesitate to break that bottle and take it to kisaki's throat. insane! kokonoi and inupi are feral in their intro scene. koko especially is so unpredictable, so slimy, so dangerous, like. it's making me want to write him lol

EVERYTHING about the taiju/mitsuya sit down is just incredible. what esp blows my mind is how taiju doesn't out hakkai when mitsuya wrongly thinks hakkai protects yuzuha. he laughs, yes, but he goes along with it. because hakkai in that moment must be just utterly humiliated to realize how he doesn't live up to the ideals mitsuya instilled in him. insane stuff. there should be more shiba household terror fic out there because their dynamic is so rich with awfulness. that said, fuck a taiju redemption arc. no one needed a taiju fucking redemption arc.

i forget that kisaki was actually a great villain! until they give you his motivations - bleh bleh bleh - he's actually so scary! he's always several steps ahead, he is good at setting traps and escaping them, he is charismatic in a strange way. he's a good villain. (and honestly, i don't even mind that he's an incel. i mind that he's an elementary school incel. if wakui had just written kisaki as staying friends with hina over the years, it would have drastically improved it. but alas. he is ruined for me forever)

i also forgot how deep hanma's voice is. that's it. that's the note.

the bad

the gag with chifuyu's "plan a and plan b" made my stomach turn. i can't stand watching people humiliate themselves.

takemichi revealing everything to chifuyu in the manga is a great moment, but i think it is spoiled a bit in happening in ep 3 of the anime because it's been a while since we have seen the bond between takemichi and chifuyu between seasons, so it just feels too sudden idk

hina's dad would have been a lot more convincing if he didn't open his speech with how he's basically an absentee parent that never sees his kids. he's not even a good dad!

really wish hina was a character and not just a prop while we're on the subject. the idea that this boy broke up with her in middle school, and she just pined after him into her mid-20s??? is she a femcel to kisaki's incel? what is this??? i know it's passe to point this out, but they really should have made them high schoolers. would have made moments like this a little more reasonable.

i know that you can't think too deeply about this story and how takemichi is 26 or it makes everything happening a) insanely creepy re: Hina and b) insanely cringy re: why is he so impressed by the company of these middle schoolers??? like, i know. suspend your disbelief and go with it. but the show keeps reminding me! they keep dropping lines about it as a joke and it's harshing my vibes.

also, takemichi is the most pathetic protagonist of all time, and it's worse in the anime than the manga because you can't read past it fast. watching those moments stretch out in the anime is agony. he keeps being outsmarted by children. CHILDREN! he jumps back to the past and his immediate priority is beating a child at bowling! he sees "bd" on a rival gang's jacket and wonders 'what does that stand for' a mere 30 seconds after thinking about the Black Dragons! i get that he's meant to be a loser, but why also make him this insufferably stupid???? (i don't even hate takemichi. i just think the anime is making it tough.)

i don’t have a favourite album just yet but i love the black parade (it’s the album i started with), three cheers, danger days, and even though whether it counts as one of their albums is a little unclear from what i’ve seen, i absolutely love conventional weapons! bullets is the album that is probably most different to what i’m used to, but the songs have been growing on me and i’ve started to love it more.

i have not gotten the chance to get into much of the lore yet! i’ve seen bits of the black parade stuff and a mention of the demolition lovers but not much more than that. i’ve been a little hesitant to reach out to anyone to ask about the mcr lore because there’s just so much that i’m a little intimidated and don’t know where to begin 😅

oooh hell yes the black parade is what a lot of people would consider to be their magnum opus, i adore it--if you haven't already, please check out the black parade live in mexico! something about their live performances is just soo visceral and exciting and it almost makes their studio versions pale in comparison, esp when it comes to this album! seeing them live last september was genuinely actually life changing. my personal fav is three cheers, but there's a mcr album for every mood <3

also, yeah, cw isn't reeeally an album, even if people basically group the songs together like one. in short, what happened during the making of the black parade was really sad, like the band moved to a haunted mansion, mikey had a crazy mental breakdown, etc, and gerard was like so incredibly into the concept of the album that it took. Everything out of him? and like all artists do, he had that moment where he was like, well, i don't want to need to hurt myself irreparably to make art. so the goal for the next album was to just play it straight--no high concept, just pure fucking rock. and they tried a bunch of things that led to cw! but ultimately they couldn't make their sound work as A My Chemical Romance Album, no matter how they sliced it, and also there was some talk that the boys were getting tired of each other. danger days came out of the ashes of conventional weapons, which you can hear musically, and it's very cool! but so like there was a huge gap between the end of tbp and dd and people didn't know what happened in the interim until after the band broke up and released cw.

bullets is SO beloved--like you say, it's the most sonically different! part of that is the sound production quality (they recorded in a friend's basement studio under an indie record label called eyeball records, got signed to reprise after) and they had a shit drummer nicknamed otter (who thankfully got sacked before three cheers), and the boys were ohhh so very new to all of this. another part is That Was The Scene, they were raised on new jersey rock legends like the misfits, thursday was (and still is) super popular, etc. it's crazy though like, ray was going to try and get into the film industry! gerard had been interning at cartoon network! frank was trying to make it with his own band called pencey prep (he didn't join until may 30 2002)!

it's a very romantic album i think, a time capsule of the era for sure. gerard was suffering from crazy tooth pain and had to get punched in the face to stop bitching about it. frank wasn't even in the band and he hung around the studio smoking and napping on the couch. they didn't sell their CDs, they just gave them out to try and spread the word. they were piss drunk for their first ever show because they were so goddamn nervous. there's a lot of extra context that i think makes the album more accessible! but also if u keep an open mind and listen to bullets just as it is, and let all the melodies and themes wash over you, listen to the lyrics, you might find yourself loving it :)

for more info: i would absolutely recommend starting with life on the murder scene for a glorified summary of their time starting out and during the recording of three cheers! and for a full fairytale kinda rundown for their time in the band, tom bryant's true lives is like the beginner's bible. they'll give u a sense of who the band is! the lore and the ~characterizations~ given to them from those two sources have stayed to this day. but then yknow, you get deeper into it and you find that some things are kinda handwaved for the sake of story and you end up obsessed with whatever happened in 2007, and ugh. anyway! lots of levels to this. but def start out with those!

Raphael is about 2-3 years younger than Cecelia and Maddox. When he was found on the island, Cecelia had maybe a couple months left alive.

The Guardians he had were originally part of a game / story that Max had set up for all of the kids in the family to play together, mostly as a means of keeping Cecelias spirits high. I'm also now realizing Eatos probably did in fact take inspiration from his mother and now I am Sad.

Max's parents had their own business and they weren't really as interested in Max or you know anything about their son. So he really did latch onto Cecelias family as his own. They also passed away on the Harmonia.

Mason, Kat and Cecelias father, was longtime friends with Alisters parents and they were considered to be members of the family as much as the Griffins were. However, everything that happened with them getting in the war torn country and then Alister becoming the lone survivor started after Miruko/Mikey was only 2.

Raphael is related through the family because his mother and Kat and Cecelias mother Evangeline were first cousins.

There is in fact a family tree and there have been discussions between me and Kohaku about all of the family bc we love them your honor.

The first Duel Monsters tournament happens when Kat is about 10-11 and its also low key the first time Seto ever sees her and one of his goals is to meet her because he's got a puppy crush. Then they meet a couple years later and it's just rivalry. Straight up ready to Duel whenever and wherever.

Evangeline and Gozaburo also ran in similar circles and thought highly of each other and if that doesn't tell you everything you needed to know about Kats mom idk what will. She didn't get to be around the Kaiba boys as much, though, usually they were too busy not really paying attention to their children (except Cecelia in Evies case), Kat and Cecelia didnt attend many parties (esp with Cecelias health and Kat doesn't like crowds and Mason didnt want them around a bunch of snooty assholes), and she only has a vague memory of a teal haired kid at a party or two but wouldn't be able to say "oh, yeah, Gozaburo had a kid before Seto and Mokuba".

The only reason they were even at the one Cecelia met Max at was because of family obligations for it.

The Big 5 are the literal worst. Just. Just all the time. Don't trust anything they do or say.

Especially not Nesbitt or Johnson.

I do also have their family dynamics figured out and also how Nesbitt spent years gaslighting Meredith in their affair about his relationship with his wife he tried to tell her he was divorcing. It's a whole mess.

Iris and River meet Seto and Mokuba about two months after they were adopted.

Seto takes over the company at the age of 13, Gozaburo still does the window thing and Seto transforms KaibaCorp into a successful gaming company.

Roland had been working for the family since probably Noa was alive but he was under strict rules to not discuss him after his death, if we go that route. He looked out for Seto and Mokuba and he and Meredith got close because they were both trying to find ways to help the brothers and give them the life they deserve and then they fell in love and are adorable.

Seto gets the Blue Eyes cards by whatever means he can, usually in feats of his own strength and has them all by the time he enters his first tournament three months after he becomes KCs president.

Death-T probably won't happen which sucks cause it's my favorite. But it's because Seto has people who would very much hold him back from doing something in that nature and offer him a bit more stability. But he's still. He's still very much Kaiba he still rips up the 4th Blue Eyes and gets smug and super competitive and makes bad calls and Iris wants to strangle him. But if he had tried to spend 8 billion yen to murder one (1) fucking teenager, Iris would have thrown him into the sun and River would have helped.

Nana and Yugi moved in with their grandparents when they were very young and their parents aren't really in the picture. Their grandma passed away when Nana was 15 and it was really sad for them all.

Nana once attempted the Puzzle but didn't get as attached and focused on it as her brother did and has been cheering him on.

Yugi solves the Puzzle when he's 15 or 16 and then the events of the manga play out.

The gang will be 17ish by the time Duelist Kingdom pans out or are turning 17/18.

Miho and Tomoya will be featured more prominently and as proper members to the gang and show up throughout the series with Joey, Tea, and Tristan. Ryou will also be getting more focus.

Takeomi just acts like a strict dad, he sees so many of Shinichiro traits in (Y/n). He helped raise the girl, so in a way he does see her as his kid.

Haru definitely has some protectivness when it comes to the girl. At most he acts like asshole older brother towards the girl. With Mikey's permission he recruited some high schoolers, who ended up being body guards to the girl.

Kaku is definitely one she trusts a whole lot, since he and Koko are more tame than the others. Yes Kaku reports anything off to Mikey but he's the one who actually listen to her when she vents.

While Koko is reasonable, he understands the girl's frustration about how protective everyone is. He also understands why Mikey is the way he is, he's the one who usually stops the niece and uncle from fighting.

Ran is more relaxed since he knows she knows how to protect herself, everyone has taught the girl a few moves. He usually sneaks out with her, acting as a chauffeur and letting her live a little. She's a teenage after all, if the others continue acting so protective she's going to rebel. So he let's her be, as long as someone's with her.

Rindou is another one who let's her be a normal teenager. He understands her frustration about Mikey's rules but he also understands that it isn't the safest for her to be vulnerable.

Please Mochi doesn't have the heart to be strict with her, all she has to do is pout and pull puppy eyes on him and he will agree. Another older man who sees her as his own child. He does set up rules though.

brahman (senju’s gang, one of the 3 deities) is 梵, which is the first kanji of bonten. brahman most likely did not go very far after the vision takemichi had with senju dying, so it probably didnt go past 2009 (which is honestly kind of a stretch).

tenjiku (izana/kisaki, yk) is also made up of 2 kanji, 天竺. the first kanji is in bonten, and we all know that manjirou (mikey) likes to keep family and others in mind nowadays (esp because he decided to end his life when there was no one else to protect bc he killed them or he cut them off, also to end the suffering he felt).

so i was thinking. the 天 in bonTEN is most likely from tenjiku from what i would like to assume. obviously bc izana was his brother, even not by blood, but he still cared and wanted to carry out shinichirous dream (he wanted all the brothers/siblings to meet and get along like actual siblings).

but we dont know what could be important to manjirou from brahman. we do know that he’s takes action based on others instead of himself (unless it’s his dark impulse). we DO know that AKASHI HARUCHIYO (otherwise known as sanzu haruchiyo, i will be referring to him as sanzu) is literally called the loyal mad dog. 

manjirou does know of his loyalty (unconfirmed, but it would be surprising if he didnt, seeing how he unapologetically killed mucho). and obviously sanzu has been confirmed that he is in fact related to senju and akashi takeomi. i mentioned in my last theory post that sanzu may had been the one to kill senju, his own sister. 

we really dont know the relationship between sanzu and the rest of his siblings, but there mustve been a reason for manjirou to use the same kanji as brahman in bonten..? 

⊳ btw, the 梵 kanji (brahman) is literally brahman from buddhism!! highly unlikely that mikey would use the same kanji in his own gang (from an opposing one) in the future without any type of significance to him. 

im gonna be honest that i didnt think so far as to exactly why manjirou used the same character, but i can only imagine the only thing thats been introduced to us as a connector. its possible that now that takemichi and draken are in brahman, it could also be a possiblity? 

maybe draken dies again, and senju also dies, which is something that takemichi needs to try and prevent. i have a feeling that since senju dies in the current 2018 timeline, then thats also part of a reason that bonten was created. 

manjirou really reminds me of the “nothing is more important than family” dom toretto memes, where he places family over everyone else, even if they arent blood related (ex. izana). its possible that sanzu would have mourned senju and manjirou saw it or something.

again, we dont know much about the akashi family’s relationships together. maybe sanzu literally did not give a shit. maybe he broke down (unlikely from what we know of him, but not impossible). 

bonten was never a thing before the tenjiku arc, which is also why i think that the second character in bonten is from tenjiku. before it was only corrupt touman under the rule of kisaki, but now kisaki is dead so bonten rose up.

in the end, this shouldnt make so much of a difference in plot, but character lore yes. the goal is to save not just mikey, but sano manjirou (as kazutora says), but what gets us there is a complete mystery. whatever happens, good luck to theorists, tokyorev manga readers, and future anime watchers. </3

Man these spoilers are just overwhelming and underwhelming at the same time.

I agree with you that little Mikey's reaction is understandable, not hurting Haru but being that angry for his toy. That's how kids are, they have strong emotions for their toys and stuff and get really upset if something happens. Though obviously what Mikey did was wrong, not justifying it at all.

I get it this is a way to show more about his dark impulsivity but idk maybe it didn't have to be in such a brutal way??? Like him murdering someone would have looked better than doing that to one of his friends (I'm not justifying either but this just feels a little over i guess). Like this is not just shocking that oh! Mikey had this issue since childhood and it's so serious etc etc (which would have been enough) but it's straight up disturbing coz of this.

Also sanzu's scars seemed to be so important uptill now. It was one of the reasons people noticed his character and the reason behind them somehow feels underwhelming to me.

Idk how to process this honestly. At first read of the spoilers I had my heart in my mouth but I'm not giving up the manga and neither giving up on Mikey. I still love his character and the complexity and contrast that comes with him. Even though I feel there could have been a better way to show the seriousness of his dark impulsivity I can't wait to see more. I'm excited actually coz this shows that Wakui is not scared to take risks and definitely has plans to keep us all on the edge of our seats.

Interesting, I generally think it would depend on who he murdered. Like if it was a random person who did nothing wrong then I think that would be just as shocking but if it was someone trying to hurt his friends then I can see how that would be less shocking. That being said I think Wakui was going for shocking here, he wanted something brutal to show just how bad Mikey can be? Either that or he needed something to link Senju back in with the main characters.

Though I do have to question if Mikey had the dark impulses all the way through childhood then why weren't there more incidents? Especially if something like a toy can set them off, you think there would've been more situations like the Sanzu one. Esp after Shinichiro died, unless there were but we don't know about them?

I actually get the feeling that no matter what the reveal of Sanzu's scars had been it would've been disappointing. Not because it's bad but purely because the mysterys over.

I swear Wakui isn't just trying to keep us on the edge of our seats, I'm pretty sure he's trying to give us all heart attacks.

:(((( poor chifuyu and takemichi, this chap hurt so much as opposed to all the fight scenes in the last few updates. also esp mikey beating the shit out of takemichi.

chifuyu’s anger is justified and the fact that he even had to restrain himself from saying it as it is just shows how he realises how wrong it sounds even if it’s not exactly false. it just so happened he didn’t know about bonten!mikey’s suicide attempt that helped takemichi to return.

and then takemichi takes the blame right after and is so determined to figure what mikey’s deal is :( he’s so persistent that i adore it

ugh. i don’t know even know when’s the story going to end but if takemichi dies i’m fucking throwing hands
