i have got to emphasise on the fact that this is huge actually- gay rights in football is something that's just barely discussed. during the world cup in qatar, captains were banned from wearing a one love captain's band because it was too political (it was just a band with a rainbow heart on it), homophobia and racism is practically rooted in the songs sung during matches and there are no out players in the premier league, or more generally, there is only one (1) out player in the top leagues. having a character simply just,, be with another man and also a footballer in the premier league is a huge statement and will hopefully aid in trying to make football a better space.

#i listened to a podcast about why there are no out players in sports last year #and the conclusion was that it had to do with a lot of different factors #among them: the fans #take for example in the netherlands there's a hooligan group that roots for feyenoord. they threatened a fellow supporter who - #- started a supporter's group for lgbt+ fans. and also tried to light the man's place of business on fire #and in an away game to (albania i wanna say??) they brought banners that said they wanted him to die of hiv #mind you this is a FELLOW SUPPORTER #for the same club #and the songs supporters sing are a hell of a lot less tame than in ted lasso #homophobic racist antisemetic or islamophobic chants are just regular business in football matches #and in addition to that: locker room culture! #locker room culture in football and many other sports (with the men mostly) is toxic as hell! #there have been some efforts to try and nip this in the bud with trainings and seminars on diversity being given at youth clubs #but it's an issue in society as a whole that a lot of young men are just homophobic as FUCK #and i mean having a character on an acclaimed and popular show on tv/streaming right now could have a huge impact #esp on all the young ppl who'll see this thru fk tiktok and whatnot #im just really excited for what this will bring. and i hope it might do some good in football as a whole #ted lasso #colin hughes #ted lasso season 3

hmm as much as i love gay welsh colin i'm not thrilled abt the way his story unfolded in the most recent ep.. I HATE the "im not mad that you're gay im mad that you didn't tell me abt it" plotline it makes Isaac seem insanely emotionally unintelligent, inconsiderate of his best friend, and like very ignorant to the lived experiences of gay men? i honestly would have preferred a storyline abt someone coming to terms and working thru their internalized homophobia

But I also hate that it was Isaac. it wouldn't be like surprising for anyone on a football team to be kind of homophobic and I get why it WAS isaac (he's the only character besides roy who has what could come close to "toxic masculinity" in terms of his anger issues etc) and his similarities to roy made him a good avenue through which roy could "work out" his own issues. but its not a great look when one of your few non-white characters who gets more than a couple lines per ep is the hypermasculine, angry, homophobic-seeming one

#like ig it couldnt be jamie bc he doesnt really have the toxic masculinity vibe. couldnt be dani or sam bc theyre too sunshiney #and none of the other players get much screentime but. like its not a good look imo. esp bc isaac did NOT get enough screen time to really #dig into his perspective we get almost all of the story from colins perspective which makes isaac look bad #and then lets him get away w/o really taking accountability for HOW we made colin feel. even in their make up scene colin has to justify #himself to isaac which is just not in line w isaacs previous behavior #ted lasso

they just love their characters and the dynamic so so so so much. The work they put in the dynamic is so striking, even the showrunners had difficulty toning down their chemistry on screen (even in post production) cause both of them just couldnt help make merlin and morgana so goddamn compatible to each other ToT

Colin Morgan especially never forgot to mention how just in love Merlin was with Morgana. like. seriously. in a lot of interviews. he says it.

Katie just wanted Morgana and Merlin to do magic together and communicate and ToT

Both of them advocated for mergana very very early on it's so kkdfkdh

you know what, this might be reaching a bit but something I can’t help but notice is how Rory almost seems to play a parental role as well as a girlfriend role to Logan (+his friends) like when they were leaving the bar in LMHYBRO and she was left alone to round them all up and get them home or even in TRPA, when they were planning the Life and Death Brigade event and she was asking valid questions on how safe it was, etc. yet he just got annoyed because it was ruining his fun. Or, how he’s almost babied when it comes to the bridesmaids incident with the argument that he just didn’t know how to be in a serious relationship so that’s somehow a justifiable reason for what he did. Or, even that instance where Rory was with that guy Robert, Logan got jealous and wanted her to ditch their dates so they could go be together (which don’t get me wrong, he can feel whatever he wants) but also, he’s a grown adult too. So I dunno, it’s just kinda weird. I’m not trying to say he’s not allowed to make mistakes or get jealous or any of that but I guess, it’s something I noticed.

(I feel like I didn’t describe my thoughts the way I wanted to but oh well-)
