Question? If you *had* to change the old Disney Snow White movie, either to adapt it to audiences now, or to make it closer to the original story, or fit your own headcanons? What would you change?

Asking because I genuinely haven’t thought about the movie until I saw you talking about the new live action version. And now I’m thinking about rewatching the movie and trying my hand at rewriting it.

What are the things you’d definitely keep, vs things that you might add if it got more screen time, or even stuff you’d cut or change. (One of mine is actually seeing the Hunter’s family. Which might be my forgetfulness? But I don’t think we do in the movie)

personally, I love 1937 snow white so much that I wouldn't change a thing hehe. I think it's wonderful the way it is.

But if I were to make my own adaptation (which I'm dead set on doing if I ever get the resources and ability to do so)....

I would do my own spin that focuses more on snow white's bond with the dwarves instead of the romance with the prince. As much as I am a sucker for romance, I do adore platonic relationships as well, especially those that are family-oriented. And snow white and the dwarves are my favorite parts of the 1937 film, so why not expand on that? Thus, the prince would probably be cut from the story, and it would be the dwarves who break the spell (they each give her a farewell kiss on the forehead that collectively breaks the curse). another thing I'd change is the dwarves, to an extent. they are still seven little men, but they lean more on the fantasy side. I'm thinking they'd look like a mix of a dwarf, gnome, and gelfling.

elements I'd keep are snow white's traditional attributes (hair black as ebony, skin white as snow, etc.), the evil queen setting multiple traps for snow white (I recall in the original fairytale that the queen tried to kill s.w. with a cursed corset and hairbrush? I'll have to brush up on my snow white lore), and the true love's kiss that breaks the sleeping spell.

I'd also load it with German fairytale aesthetics! I'd want it to be traditionally animated, in a similar style to these other works:

The general tone of my version would be a mix of dark fantasy (Don bluth vibes) and peaceful cottagecore (studio Ghibli). Generally a calm, beautiful, but eerie film that isn't afraid to get "Grimm" (eh?! eeeeehhh???!!).

I hope you don't mind my wall of text lol. I just love snow white :P

niki says ! i don't exactly have a comfort show/series but i really like rewatching studio ghibli films, especially howl's moving castle. i just really love the nostalgic vibes, beautiful animation, and most importantly the story of those films. all of the elements just gives me comfort. i even danced the piano theme of howl's moving castle during my 18th debut celebration with my father <3

anyway, here's a masterpost of (my favourite) studio ghibli related video essays!

The Immersive Realism of Studio Ghibli: one of the things that studio ghibli movies are best known for is their ability to make fictional worlds feel so real. I love the editing and wording in this one so much, it’s immersive and calm!

I'm feeling mooshy and melancholic and sentimental, here's some things I pulled out to watch again potentially.

Arete might be impossible for me to watch rn due to being a PAL dvd and I don't have a TV to hook my region free player up to yet... But gosh, if I could watch it again right now I think that would be my pick.

Metropolis... Man, wouldn't it have been incredible to get a few more movies like this? Maybe I just want to see Tezuka's Star System cast get more use outside of stories that were specifically written by Tezuka. I don't know if he would have approved later in life, but I like to think that it's what he would have wanted for the characters when he originally came up with the Star System gimmick.

The Little Mermaid... I still need to watch the specific dvd, but it's supposed to be a true transfer of the theatrical cut, not the edited $5 bin vhs cuts, with both the English and Japanese tracks available. This movie wrecks me every time. Highly recommended.

Princess Mononoke. I know my taste in Ghibli is deeply colored by what I saw first, which was Mononoke. I love most of the other Ghibli films, but I don't think anything can ever top this one for me. A movie for these times we live in now especially, I think.

The Last Unicorn. When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain, and the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain, in the shadow of the forest, though she may be old and worn, they will stare unbelieving at the last unicorn. When I was a kid I thought that opening song was so corny, but now it just makes me weep like a little mushy baby.

Android Kikaider. If you like "Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis" you may enjoy this brooding miniseries. The soundtrack is outstanding, too. I wish I could track down more of the original manga, because what I could find online explained a lot of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it plot threads that completely went over my head when I first watched it on Adult Swim as a teenager. I think only the first volume or two ever got translated tho, and only digitally. And that's just tragic.

.hack//SIGN... I only have volumes 4 and 6, but that's okay for now because volume 6 has the episodes I left off on when I was last bingewatching this series. (Before I decided to stop watching on streaming sites until I understood VPNs and stuff better lol.) People who are more weebish than I am keep comparing this series unfavorably to Serial Experiments Lain (as in "Ugh it's just a more boring knockoff of Lain") but I've never seen that one so I couldn't say. I think hacksign is great, tho. I loved it when I first watched it on toonami as a teen, especially since it ended with a canon lgbt relationship, but rewatching it earlier this past year I also really really empathized with Tsukasa's depression and journey out of social isolation. And having played an MMORPG now, I can enjoy how The World is portrayed more than I could back in 2003ish. As well as having a point of reference to critique it's mechanics lol. Anyway it's good, I think it's good.
