The metallic wail heard round the world—or at least, heard over the township of Wicked’s Rest. The skyquake, the first of its kind in this part of Maine, brings the entire town to a stop. Cleanup efforts from the mineral ooze catastrophe are finally concluded, and the next strange occurrence is hot on its heels. It seems that this place will never truly know peace.
The sound, like the rusted hinges of a heavenly gate the size of Mount Everest being opened, lasts for about five seconds, then fades, then spins up again for another round of deafening, unexplained phenomena. It continues for about half an hour, and seems to happen once every day or two. There have been many theories offered by the local media, some of them more earthly-bound and others pointing blame at the Null Impact Crater and Zilch, the cryptid believed to reside there… but no one can be certain. Is Zilch phoning home? Are we about to be invaded by a superior alien race? That’s certainly what some Resters think, including but not limited to the Good Neighbors. New homemade signs are appearing all over town every night, warning people to stay away from the impact crater and the Flat, claiming that both are clearly dangerous and a part of something larger going on. And, well… they certainly aren’t wrong about the danger.
A very well known and well loved Rester, Jedidiah Hodge Sr., is missing. The local man is owner and operator of Red’s Eats, a long-standing shack restaurant that has been serving ‘Maine’s #1 lobster roll’ for over fifty years. His employees and family are confused and upset by his sudden disappearance, claiming that he started acting strangely just before vanishing. They have no idea where he might have gone, as he “has always been dedicated to this restaurant and to serving the people of Wicked’s Rest the best damn lobster they’ve ever had.” Authorities are looking into it.
There has also been speculation from several sources of questionable repute that one Blake Sheffield, a member of the local board of selectmen and organizer of monthly town hall meetings, is pushing for the resources spent on these missing person’s cases to be allocated elsewhere, claiming that we “can’t keep wasting time on these people that want to just wander off into the woods. We all know how dangerous the woods are.” This pivot away from ‘helping thy neighbor’ seems in stark contrast to the fact that it was Blake herself who organized the temporary shelters for Resters displaced by the ooze. By all accounts, she seems to have undergone a full personality shift. And she’s not the only one.
It wouldn’t be Wicked’s Rest if some enterprising people and groups weren’t quick to market the skyquakes. Should you go see the sky splitting open? Probably not. But the “photos of the skyquakes” are selling postcards like crazy (no, the skyquakes are not visible), and the township has erected several “listening stations” around town where the acoustics are best.
A strange symbol is appearing on things across town, seemingly painted onto surfaces. It’s round with what looks like a mysterious face in the middle (if you squint?), and it’s most frequently being sighted around the Abnormality, though there have been reports of it in more far-flung parts of town, too. No one knows what it means. Speculation abounds. Is it some teenager’s graffiti tag? The mark of a new cryptid? Installation art? Those who have spent time around or in service of demons before will be filled with a supernatural dread when near these symbols.
A recent ghost tour went incredibly wrong, and the woman running it, Helene, turned out to be a ghost in the process of gaining strange abilities. While she’s been destroyed and answers to a lot of questions were destroyed with her, those on the tour won’t soon forget what they have seen. Survivors are few in number and those who didn’t make it are trapped in the crystalized goo we’re all familiar with. But this time, it is not so easily shattered. The town is trying to avoid bad PR by reminding everyone that the waivers signed before the tour did cover this.
The skyquakes have been confusing the local wildlife – some species and creatures are frightened and may be leaving town entirely, while others are scared to the point of uncharacteristic aggression. House pets and supernatural monsters alike may become threatening whenever the sky booms.
There’s been an influx of doomsday prepper types from the outskirts of town, taking up residence in the Common and other parks to try and convince passers-by that their reckoning event is the correct one. Because yes, of course there’s a few separate groups with ideas that challenge one another. Hopefully it doesn’t escalate.
The Good Neighbors may be more than they seem. While it’s surely full of well-intended neighborhood watch types, its leadership might have other ideas. Some people are going missing and it’s usually presumed to be connected to the strange behavior others are exhibiting, but the Neighbors have been weirdly tight-lipped about a few of these disappearances. Will your character investigate or get caught up in their the Neighbors’ secrecy? The tourism board doesn’t like to talk about White Crest’s death rate. Dozens die in this small coastal town every year – sometimes hundreds – and most would rather not think about it. But that’s just in a year. How about the last five? The last decade? The last hundred? Back to the town’s settlement? Thousands and thousands of deaths, and it’s only by the grace of some supernatural forces that their ghosts haven’t all lingered, outnumbering and haunting the living. Instead, there’s the astral, soaking up the ghosts that do move on, as well as the essence of those who never become ghosts to begin with.
The tear to the astral plane is not an easy thing to repair, and unfortunately, it’s not just sitting idly by -- the tear is growing. And the continued exposure to our world is beginning to make the other planes of the astral unstable. Even the ether is shaking some of itself loose. More than that, there are rumblings of other dimensional tears forming due to the amount of temporal instability. They might start out as little paper cuts into other worlds, but soon enough, they’ll surely grow, perhaps engulfing our own world.
White Crest was already a town haunted – by its past, by its ghosts, and by its living. But will the town be able to handle the addition of thousands more ghosts? The lost and confused, the exorcised and enraged, the sorrowful and pitiable. Many who have died within the town’s limits since it was settled are back, and even for the living who aren’t able to see or sense them, it’s clear something otherworldly has made a presence in town. Things are going to be very far from even the “normal” that they’re used to. Is a mass exorcism in order, a way to have them willingly march back into the astral, or will we all have to make our peace with their afterlives being part of our lives?
OTHER INFO:
Characters who can’t normally see/sense ghosts still can’t see/sense them, but they may occasionally hear whispers of the dead in their ears – fragments or sentences that make their hair stand on end. Or maybe they feel the faintest brush of a hand across their shoulder. Some characters may even see ghosts in reflections, or hazy outlines in the distance. These might blip away or lose focus sometimes.
However, an exception to those who can’t see ghosts – characters may be able to see and hear ghosts that they personally knew or were related to in life. Family, friends, neighbors, distant relatives. Your character may be reacquainted with a ghostly version of them.
If a person died in White Crest, they have the potential to show up in town as a ghost or spirit, even if they were never a ghost before. People do not need to return as “basic ghosts”. They can return as almost any kind of ghost or specter in our bestiary.
Ghosts who were previously exorcised may return even more corrupted and shattered than before, as a result of their very essence being obliterated. Be very careful of these especially dangerous spirits.
Ghosts have no memory of what the “afterlife” or lack thereof was like, and cannot answer questions in that direction.
As the astral tear isn’t fully closed, many of the effects of the last POTW are still in play. It’s no longer possible to become trapped in the astral plane, but life still has dream-like tendencies at times, astral entities are finding their way out with a little more difficulty, and dreams and nightmares may take on supernatural qualities.
OOC Note: Please be mindful of using parental death tw and sibling death tw as well as other death-related trigger warnings for this plot. Additionally, keep an eye to avoid metagaming (for example, having your character see another character’s ghost connection without asking). Thank you!

For centuries, the turbulence waged with alliances constantly shifting between species as warfare continued. Until the Faeries intervened and the Inter-Realm Treaty was signed. It fashioned the birth of the new world that followed, Lume Noua.
Seven realms were created, each led by a different species in newly established noble houses across the realms, and set the tone and culture of their new civilizations - one built on the foundation of the peace treaty. Centuries later, in the year, 2600, the Inter-Realm Treaty expired. And a new realm, The Dark World, has risen in public opposition of Lume Noua’s current political order. Will Lume Noua repeat its history and origin story? Will the world as the various beings know it transform, yet again?

Without their gods to protect them, the people of Iondelle have been forced to watch as their world is taken over by the rot. Everywhere the rot touches, the world returns to its original elemental state. The threat of destruction looms over all the land. But hope is not yet lost, for there is a prophecy that foretells the return of the gods. One group seeks to fulfill this prophecy, despite the dangers that they will inevitably face. As the rot takes root and the gods look down on them from somewhere beyond, these mortals can only hope to restore their world before it's too late.

What’s new in town?:
In the current POTW, ghosts of the past are returning to White Crest, and they may present a haunting problem to just about everyone in town. Who doesn’t have a ghost?
Local bakery Sweet Delights has a cookie issue on their hands. One of their cookies divided itself into two wholes. Then those cookies did the same. Then those ones. Now the bakery has an ever-growing amount of cookies and it’s going to be become a problem unless someone eats every single one, and quickly.
One of the little ponds in town that people swim in is full of crayfish. Which isn’t so unusual, but... these appear to be ghost crayfish. They’re floating around the area, vanishing in peoples’ hands, and aren’t shy about giving a pinch here and there. Maybe they like cookies?
There’s a new computer virus going around, and it might actually be a ghost. Affected computers start rattling around and then explode. Be careful.
Starters:
Teagan posted to let everyone know she isn’t missing anymore! Yay! Maybe don’t ask for details, though, could be a touchy subject.
Cass would like some advice on how to get in touch with Ryan and Shane of ghost hunting fame to... maybe help with a ghost? Or maybe just get a signature? She wasn’t specific.
Silas is looking for a cooler place to sleep. Anyone have any suggestions?
Metzli has thought up a new way to greet people. Is it a good one?
Milo is practicing his ability to affect the weather by sheer force of will. Here’s hoping (?) it’s successful! Sorry Silas!
