so y’all already knOw a little bit abt her Life and Backstory bc! she’s roman’s little sister so i’ll just kinda breeze over most of it but

she is the third walsh child born out of four, with 2 older brothers and 1 younger brother.... #goodluckcharlie

she’s nothing short of.... a baby genius tbh ? like babygirl is smart as a WHIP and that much became clear very quickly as a kid, she had the brains to go far!

but she also had a Lot of energy... a Lot Of It. and focusing in school was always super hard for her, which was frustrating bc she knew everything and what was going on but she couldn’t ever make herself pay attention to it in class and was always getting in trouble

so! her parents tried to find something for her to do that was a constructive way to use all that energy! musical instruments were Not rumor’s friend, neither were most sports. it wasn’t until she started to figure skate that she found her niche :’) an she never looked back!

the rest of school passed? pretty uneventfully? but she did graduate 2 years early and went to columbia university where she majored in history (just like her dad huh) with a concentration focus in medieval and renaissance studies

and then? she moved right back home post-graduation bc she has no idea what she wants to do w her degree at all! she just wants to figure skate :( so now she’s chillin at big bear, where she’s been for the last year give or take!!

Treat #1 - Delivery

Alright everyone here’s the first sweet treat for the Trick or Treat Halloween event! Like I said earlier all of the Tricks will be posted at 8am EST every day and all of the Treats will be posted at 8pm EST. I hope you’re looking forward to these as much as I am.

WARNINGS: Due to the nature of these stories I would like to advise everyone to read at your own risk. The treats are typically fluffy but that doesn’t not mean they are necessarily safe. There may still be elements of horror involved. Please keep your own mental health in mind when reading.

Delivery

You knew better than to stay that far outside of town for that long but a delivery was a delivery. After finishing the kimono commission for the elderly apothecary's daughter, you ventured to the outskirts of town against your better judgment. Someone this age indeed was rare in this time period, but she was a sweet little old lady, small in stature and covered in wrinkles reminding you of your grandmother. The conversation could have gone all night by Ena paused abruptly and forced you out the door before the sun could set, warning you to hurry back into town.

The warning was friendly, and you assumed it was out of consideration for bandits, but it is October and nearly dark, you found your mind start to wander to all the things that could bump in the night. Realizing you were alone in the forest as an eerie silence crept in. You noticed something black shift out of the corner of your eye, and you picked up your pace. Just as you started to move quicker, you heard twigs behind you snap, and that was all you needed before taking off in a sprint towards town.

Lungs and legs burning as the lights of Azuchi became visible you pushed yourself that much harder. You would be fine once you made it back into the populated market streets. Right? As the earth beneath your feet smoothed, you slowed your pace nearing the gate when something latched onto your wrist. You screamed consumed by your fear, surprised there was any air to push out after all the running. Knees collapsing underneath you, at least you would be harder to move if you were dead weight, then again, dead may be what it was looking for.

There was a sharp tug then everything went black, but you were still conscious, you were much too aware to be anything else. Everything was warm and a scent you knew all too well settled into your nose. Heat radiated to your scalp where a hand now laid as a low rumble vibrated in the chest you were held against.

“I apologize if I frightened you Fireball. You were taking so long I thought to come after you.” Nobunaga began to gently stroke your head “My intention was merely to walk you back from your delivery. Shall we head home?”

You wrapped your arms around his waist and squeezed, burrowing further into his embrace. “Yes please.” With a feather light kiss to your forehead, you separated all but your hands and walked together back to the castle.

We were just so fucking upset at that whole movie, it was a disaster and I hope to never feel that way in a theater again lmao I wanted to kill somebody. ... so barbara was born n raised in san francisco, california to a solidly middle class family. her parents were divorced growing up, although they were friendly & got along well enough to be friends & co-parent barbie. she’d always been quite an idealist like Yes The World Is Good but when she was twenty, her dad had died due to a rogue heart attack that seemingly happened for no reason & it completely shattered barbara.

that’s when a local gang found her, at her ultimate low, & roped her into their business. she stayed w them for two years or so & at some point or another barbara started to realize that she didn’t think this business & way to make money was a good one. eventually, they starting cutting pay & barbara started to feel like she was bein manipulated. working w the gang kind of made her give up her optimism & is what truly formed her into the stone cold but somehow still elegant & captivating barbie she is today ! her idealistic attitude & never-ending optimism died with all of the shady shit that gang made her do.

then barbara was offered a job as an assassin for a powerful man doin some shady shit & she was unable to refuse even tho her first instinct was to turn it down – it offered great money & stability, & with the impression that she’d only be hurting people who deserved it, barbara shakily accepted the deal & left the gang !

she’s not pleased w the fact that she’s murdering ppl for a living, obviously, but she tries to make do with what she has & tells herself that the ppl she’s killing deserve it but !! messy !

personality-wise, barbara comes off as super intimidating at first n like she just doesn’t have feelings… super proper n always sitting upright n stiff as fuck… scares ppl away bc she seems like a robot at first

she's that kid who studies for the test like 3 weeks before it actually happens and has color coordinated highlighting and bullet journals.. she wants to be on top of everything, constantly – she doesn’t like feeling unorganized or like she’s falling apart ? i think it’s partially bc she tends to over perfect areas of her life like that, and like color coordinating her closet and making sure everything is tidy to make up for the Mess that is her secret career ??

one of the most annoying things ever is how perfect she seems on the surface ?? like, she likes everybody n is probably the type of person who rescues stray kittens from trees n sings as little birdies fly down & comb her hair or some shit but anyone close to barbie in real life knows she is a hardcore mess

it’s actually kind of funny, because she’ll stroll into a bar & bat her eyelashes at the bartender & single ppl in the room to try & get them to order a drink for her solely bc she doesn’t know the names of any drinks... has no common sense & is too naive for her own good ( what is a handjob... what does “on the rocks” mean ) but the girl’s trying to [ troy bolton vc ] break free so who am i to judge ?

she’s a wedding planner who’s actually in love with the idea of love & has watched the notebook 1 too many times... despite her being wildt nowadays she’s still into the whole “when i meet the one for me my foot will pop when we kiss & i’ll feel fireworks” thing.. it’s cute but also sad but ! cute !

With even local trails getting clogged, our editor has some advice for you that he hoped he’d never have to give.

We can’t help ourselves: A hiker’s gonna hike. Hiking is good for your body and soul, and both need nourishment now more than ever.

But this isn’t about you, it’s about the health of others and the bandwidth of first responders, and it’s time to stay home. I know that’s a tough pill to swallow because I feel it, too.

Overflowing trailheads with minimal regard for social distancing isn’t what we need right now. I support the parks and trail systems that have chosen to close because that’s the only way to keep folks at home. And that’s the only way to ensure we’re protecting vulnerable populations and not unnecessarily taxing the limited infrastructure most small outdoor towns have.

I live in a town of about 2,000 in the foothills in between Boulder and Estes Park, Colorado. I moved here for one trail in particular, my favorite mountain bike trail. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a couple trout-filled rivers nearby as well as a few lifetimes of rock climbing. Naturally, it’s a popular weekend destination. It’s now seeing peak summer levels of traffic and taxing local law enforcement and first responders (I’m a volunteer firefighter, and I see it every time I work a shift).

For now, I’m not hiking or biking area trails. I’m turning to home-based stuff like the below. I urge you to do so, too. Frankly, it’s been pretty fun.

Work Out

I love training, and it’s benefits are endless. Stronger bod and lungs are up there, as are fun and camaraderie, but most pertinent right now, in my opinion? Stress relief. An hour in my driveway or garage working up a sweat while blasting Beastie Boys is an hour out of my house and out of my head. Here’s a sample workout from my friends at Boulder Athletics that you can do at home.

Put some weight in a day pack (15 to 20 pounds), then:

5 Rounds for time of

20 Backpack lifts from ground to overhead

15 Burpees, jumping over backpack

4 Rounds for time of

40 Backpack Russian twists

30 Second plank hold

Zen Out

Take a few minutes to clear your mind and appreciate where you are and what you’ve got. You can do it on your own simply by sitting quietly with your eyes closed for 10 minutes and focusing on your breathing. Or you can download any of a host of apps. I’ve used Headspace for years and love it. We’re hosting our own guided meditation for our Basecamp membership program.

Write a Letter to a Hiking Partner

Take a minute to thank an old friend for an amazing trip, to reminisce about that one time it all came together perfectly, and you hiked with ease, ate well, didn’t see another soul, did see a moose or a griz or the biggest shooting star of your life, and enjoyed it all amidst golden weather. Or commemorate the hard times, that trip you toughed it out together and staggered back to the car grinning. I remember a late summer trip to West Virginia’s Cranberry Wilderness with my college roommate Glen. It was a little of both: We had torrential rain, and Glen had somehow forgotten his shell. I’d decided to forgo my canister stove for an alcohol stove I'd made from a Coors can. Our progress was slow, but that afforded us time to shoot the shit and solve all the world’s problems while drinking just the right amount of Jim Beam. Handwritten is the way to go for style, but email works too.

Address Your Maintenance Backlogs

My favorite sleeping pad, an old Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLight, has a slow leak, which I’ve learned the hard way at least three times. But after each of those trips, I shoved the pad back in my gear closet bleary-eyed without fixing it. Today’s the day. I’m also going to wash my most-used sleeping bags, refresh waterproofing on my boots and gloves, and address long term inattention my cooking and water purification kits have suffered. Might even unbend some tent stakes, if it comes to that.

Video Chat Someone for Fun

Yes, I said fun. You may already be swimming in a sea of video-conferencing. Even my kid has Zoom meetings. But add one to your week with people you’re dying to see, that you miss. Toast to their health. Have a campfire. Human connection, even with a device in between, will do you good. A phone call works too.

Get Hooked on a Podcast

We’re biased for sure, but we have a brand new story from our Out Alive series that’s just dying to explore your headphones. It’s armchair entertainment and educational at the same time.

Learn Something New

If you don’t come out of quarantine with a new hobby, skill, or side-hustle it’s not for lack of time but for lack of desire. Just chillin’ is fine too, if that’s what you need, but make that a conscious decision. But if you and your family are well, consider this unstructured time the rare chance to learn the banjo, practice your conversational Spanish, or master your camp chef skills. Plan Your Next Trip

This pandemic grounded trips I had on the calendar for the country of Georgia, Colombia, and Oregon. It cancelled a few conferences I was stoked to attend. It closed the ski resorts and climbing gyms. It closed Rocky Mountain National Park. You get it, and I’m sure you have your own unfulfilled list you wish to realize. Use this downtime to plan (or replan) your next great escape. I have some pent up energy and can’t stop thinking about fly fishing and pack-rafting in Alaska, biking a section of the Great Divide, maybe finally hiking the JMT, or climbing in the Wind Rivers. As my friend and 2013 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Mike Libecki says (cheesily, yet guilelessly), “Dream big, and climb those dreams!”

My favorite lyrics from New School Rap Artists.

So I run a radio show at my college with one a co-host named C-Bo called “Chillin with C-Bo”. I started out as a guest on the show, but I soon became something more. Now C-Bo is leaving the country for a while, so it’s up to me to run the show.

If you ever wanna listen, I’m on from 11:30 AM- 2:30 Pm EST, on Tuesdays. I’ll provide a link to the online site below.

But enough self promotion!

One thing I promised C-Bo was that I would stick to his style of music for the show to maintain consistency, as well as sprinkle a little bit of my own flavor.

The problem, however, was I wasn’t into the type of music C-Bo was into; New School Rap. I have been hesitant to dive into this genre because I was afraid that it would ruin the flavor of rap and hip hop I had acquired from before 2010 (you know, your basic nostalgia).

But As I began to really listen to artists like Chance the Rapper, Logic, Childish Gambino, and Kendrick Lamar, I fell in love. But not with the beat, or the tempo, or even the voices/flow of the artists. I fell in love with the lyrics. What I love most about rap and hip-hop is that it gives artists a chance to formulate great lyrical content. Other genres of music have become so cheesy and typical with the words, that it gets to the point where they all sound the same.

But in rap, each song is so different.

Nas wrote a song from the point of view of a gun.

Eminem wrote a song about a crazed fan that lost his mind trying to get his attention.

NWA created songs that helped bring a spark into the souls of Compton residents, making them feel like they aren’t all the criminals and gang-bangers everyone sees them as.

Hell, Mackelmore wrote a song about how to shop at a thrift shop!

Today’s modern day rap has taken a bit of a blow in terms of lyrical content, however.

With so many songs about money, drinking, smoking, making money, cursing out the police, and gang banging, along with the rise of Mumble rap and songs that are just repeating the same 3 lines over and over to a loud beat, it’s hard to find good, thought provoking lyrics in today’s rap.

Luckily, I found a few.

If you wanna know what songs these lyrics came from, they’ll be in Parenthesis at the end of each one.

So here are some of my favorite lyrics from some of today’s New School Rap Artists;

Kendrick Lamar

The Grammy Award winner just dropped some new bops. He released his 13th studio album titled Upside Down 2020 via Roc Nation. This year certainly has felt like we've been upside down for sure. On the album, he has features from Pharrell Williams, John Legend Stefflon Don and Stephen Marley.

Toni Braxton teamed up with Missy Elliott for a remix of “Do It.”

On the track, Toni pulls inspiration from her own experiences and shares advice for anyone struggling with the decision to end an unhealthy relationship. Well, she's not singing about her own relationship. Back in April, Toni said she and her fiance Birdman are getting married THIS year regardless of the Coronavirus pandemic. They have been engaged since 2018.

Toni & Missy bring a fast-paced tempo to the remix while reiterating the Grammy winner's encouragement to leave a toxic relationship by rapping “let him know I gotta do it, ‘cause he already done and blew it.”

On collaborating with the living legend, Missy stated, “Toni’s team reached out to my manager and asked if I could produce a remix for her next single. Alright everyone here’s the next treat for the Trick or Treat Halloween event! Like I said earlier all of the Tricks will be posted at 8am EST every day and all of the Treats will be posted at 8pm EST. I hope you’re looking forward to these as much as I am.

It was your favorite route to work, the sidewalks were busy but never crowded, the architecture of the historic buildings was spectacular, and about halfway through the commute, the sidewalk was covered by beautiful trellises with all sorts of ripe fruit. A man as handsome as winter lived there, and from what you had caught of him on your way home he kept to himself and his garden.

One unusually chilly evening in the middle of October you were heading home much later than intended. Turning down all of the rides offered to you was starting to feel like a bad idea. Someone was definitely tailing you, and you were nowhere near your apartment. This was bad, very bad. Out of nowhere a hand shot out and pulled you behind a wrought iron gate. You almost screamed when a voice whispered in your ear.

“I wouldn’t if I were you.” Your blood ran cold who had just grabbed you?

You back was flush against a cold brick wall while a body flattened against you. You stayed quiet as the footsteps from your pursuers rapidly approached, stopping just beyond the fence you were hidden behind to try to figure out where you had gone. As their voices faded into the distance the man who smelled like burnt berries backed himself away. As he did you recognized him with a gasp.

“It’s you.” a whisper of a reply. “Thank you for your help.” his hard eyes took you in before he huffed.

“What is a woman doing walking around by herself this late at night?” Backing away from you further you could see his pale blonde hair reflect the moon as it glowed in the night. His skin the color of an expensive porcelain vase in both color and feel, smooth and chilled to the touch, his eyes were two different colors, one as blue as the ocean the other as green as his garden, bored into your very soul.

“I got off work late. I’ve never had a problem like this before.” you were embarrassed, you should have called a cab, or taken one of your friends offers to help you get home. “I’m sorry for causing you trouble. I’ll just call a cab and wait here for it if you don’t mind.”

“Of course I mind. I’ll take you home. Come.” it was a command you didn’t feel like you could refuse, something about the way he moved was demanding yet soothing.

“You garden is beautiful, it’s my favorite part of my commute.” you smile at him, and he stopped suddenly, pulling a few fresh fruits from above you.

“I figured, here.” holding the ripe plums out to you. “You stare at them every day. I’ve been meaning to ask if you want some.”

You took them as you followed him around the complex toward another stone building. He punched a code into the keypad, and the garage door began to make its ascent. As you sat waiting for it you popped plum after plum into your mouth, they were delightful. The perfect balance of sweet and sour, with just the right about of juice bursting from them as you bit down.

“These are perfect! Could I-” you paused realizing you may be intruding. “Could I come back again and try some more? I’ll pay you.”

He paused flinching at your request. You knew it was too forward of you. “Ah, sorry I didn’t mean to impose.” he turned eyes sad.

“No, it’s not that. I would be happy to share my fruit, but I would advise against it.” for a moment his eyes flashed red and his canines extended.

“You know. That’s something you should really show somebody after you dropped them off. Not before you ask them to ride your bike home…” you deadpanned trying to see the lighter side of a terrifying situation.

You heard a snicker behind you as a young man with sandy brown hair and deep brown eyes flashed into existence. “The young lady does have a point. You can’t just hint that we’re vampires and then proceed to walk her home Kenshin.”

“So you’re name’s Kenshin? Nice, I’m (YN).” feeling a little better now that you had names to faces. “I’ve never met a vampire before, are all of the rumors about you true?”

Kenshin let out an exasperated breath “No, not all of them.” he put the helmet down back on the seat of the bike. “Would you like to come in for tea?”

You smiled at the invitation, “As long as you promise that’s all we’re drinking.” A small smile registered on the second man’s face as Kenshin offered you his hand.

“Why are women of this time period so odd? I’m sure you taste weird anyway. Come in if you’d like, if not shall we be on our way?”

“Mhh~” you hummed and hopped towards his outstretched hand. “Let’s have some tea!”
