Understanding is a bitter seed. It can be planted in near any soul, but water isn't what brings it to bloom. It needs to be fed with other, dearer things that, once spilled, can never be replaced.
-Mira Grant, Final Girls
Tumblr media
Finished Reading: Final Girls by Mira Grant
A terrifying side of VR, where patients are sent through mental scenarios that would rival any horror house. A Dr. Jennifer Webb and Esther Hoffman are sent into a linked scenario for a journal article that takes a turn for the worst when someone breaks in.
Horror and gore are not really my jam, but Mira Grant is somehow able to keep me coming back in order to read these novellas of her's. I think it's the story behind each and that is why. The ending for this one is not one I would have expected but it makes sense for the world that resulted of the VR scenario that was run.

Other Branches of the Mizrahi Tree
Outside of the main family line of the tree lies a number of spare branches that have their own minor legacies. Below is the list of these legacies, their role in the main plot, as well as their current heir.
For the main family tree click here
Tumblr media
Mizrahi Farm (Nathaniel Tabor) - During the Antique Generation Uriah Mizrahi inherited his father's farm after the untimely death of his older brother. He later purchased the neighboring Hoffman Farm which belonged to his brother-in-law giving him control of all of Old New Henford. He left the land to his son David. While David is considered to be the heir of that time it was his twin brother who actually produced the next heir so David was able to leave the land to his own biological son Reuben who never had children of his own but his twin sister did and he adopted her youngest son Nathaniel as heir.
Tumblr media
Henford Crime Ring (Hayden Noble) - During the Juice Prohibition during the Burnished Generation Esther Mizrahi married Gilbert Hough who opened a speakeasy (that David worked in). With his wife's full support he became a powerful figurehead in Henford that no one wanted to cross. His son-in-law Jonathan picked up the mantel after Gilbert's death in WWII leading to both sons working to break free of the family after Alexander's daughter was severly injured as a toddler. Samuel continued to work for the HCR while keeping his family a secret in hopes of protecting them from a similar fate. It wasn't until the 60's when the HCR got tangled up with the Oasis Springs Syndicate (OSS) and they met Detective Nikolas Layne that both brother's were able to get out and be moved to other Worlds
Tumblr media
Henford Citizens (Batiste/Harris) - During the Antique Generation, Uriah's older brother passed away but not before he had 3 sons. His middle son had two children. His daughter Kinley Batiste was the heart and soul of Henford and passed that down to her 7 children. Her oldest daughter Rosalie Harris has now passed that down to her own 6 children. Together they keep Henford running and grounded to it's roots.
Tumblr media
Pigulock Manor (Huey Pigulock) - During the Classic Generation Lizbeth Mizrahi married William Pigulock who later inherited his grandparents estate in Evergreen Harbor. The house was a safe place for the women (including Kailee Greenburg who founded the Greenburg Rehabilitation Center) to raise their families while their husbands served in WWII. After William died in the war his children struggled to get their feet under them. His son Frankie was a deadbeat who never had children while his son Blaine (who he never met) was in and out of rehab and eventually OD'd. He had a son with a stripper who seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Though Huey currently lives in San My with his wife and son he is set to inherit both the Pigulock fortune and the Greenburg Rehibilitation Center (see below)
Tumblr media
Greenburg Rehibilitation Center (Amira Greenburg) - After the Hoffman Purchase during the Antique Generation, Imram Hoffman continued to work for his brother-in-law Uriah and he and his wife were great supports for their nephew David during the Burnished Generation. During the Classic Generation their daughter Kailee went to Evergreen Harbor with her cousin where they lived in a hobo camp and she met Knox Greenburg. Knox had big dreams of changing Evergreen, dreams that she brought to fruition on her own while he was fighting in WWII. Their children halfheartedly continued their dreams but after Amira's death the Center will close unless someone finds a heart to continue.
Tumblr media
Scavengers (Elisha Gagnon) - During the Antique Generation, Jeb Mizrahi (Uriah's nephew) was disowned and cast out of Henford for getting a woman pregnant. After his death in WWI and his wife's death a few years later their 3 unmarried daughters were left with nothing. When the economy collapsed during the Classic Generation they became homeless and lived in a junkyard. While Hannah's son Cohen continued that lifestyle her 3 daughters were raised in an orphanage and given a bit of a better chance at life. Two of her grandchildren have even managed to make a name for themselves with Katlin being a prestegious scientist who's research helped cure Esteban Beltran during the Expressionist Generation and Derrick Parson who became the music agent for Johnny Zest during the Fast Generation.
Tumblr media
Oasis Springs Syndicate? (Major Blanton) - During the Burnished Generation David's other cousin Gabriel (Kinley's older brother) took to a life of crime. But rather than stay in Henford and get involved in the HCR he moved to Oasis Springs and got involved in something shadier. He met Rowan who was [redacted] and they had two sons. While Gabriel was eventually arrested and spent his last days in prison, Rowan continued pursuing her own goals. She worked as a double agent for both the Syndicate and the HCR while completing her own mission. She was sent to retrieve Sofia from her foster home during the Classic Generation at which point she gave her a cypher disguised as a book which she later sent a Syndicate agent to retrieve during the Dandy Generation. Though she died before achieving her goal of [redacted] she passed her aspirations on to her son and grandson who launched OMI during the Fast Generation in preparation for [redacted]

Machinarium
Machinarium is our first full-length adventure game in which players take on the role of a robot who has been exiled to the scrap heap. Players must use logic, collect important items, and solve environmental puzzles to get the robot back into the city of Machinarium so he can rescue his robot-girlfriend, save the head of the city, and defeat the bad guys from the Black Cap Brotherhood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Machinarium has a 2D, hand drawn, watercolour style that has an overall dull colour scheme to it and everything looks like its got a touch of yellow to it. The style that the style that the game uses is called steampunk. I find it interesting how all the bots in the game have slightly rusted and the whole game has a sort of worn and rusted look. The style of some of the ships reminds me of the castle (left) and the battleship (right) from Howls moving castle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Machinarium and Beyond by Jakub Dvorsky, DevGAMM Kyiv 2013 (revisit)
The design team decided pretty early on that they would be making the game by using 'old school' techniques and it being entirely hand drawn with pencils and pen on paper. They decided to do this because they felt like it was a good fit for the robotic feel of the game because of its contrast to the 'cold and methodic and exact' way that robots are usually presented in science fiction, so they wanted to break this stereotype and somehow make it 'warmer'.
One of the first issues they came across when creating the game was with the lead artist Adolf Hoffman and how every illustration he did was almost to exact and too perfect for the feel of the game, so as a team that had to discuss how they could relax the style and add the clunkiness that they wanted. The did this by having Adolf draw with his left hand even thought he is right handed and this idea ended up being perfect for the game and the whole game is actually drawn in Hoffmans left hand. Towards the end of the drawing stage in the project he ended up being to skilled in his left and which you can see from watching a play through the game and can see how the art ever so slightly improves. I find this really interesting how people usually strive for perfection in their work but in this instance the perfection wasn't that they were going for and instead that earnest it too look almost incomplete and messy, this is called being stylised and its they type of thing I would like to reflect in my game and the idea that your work docent have to be perfect to be right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following all the sketches work the illustrations were scanned in with what I was either a photocopier or just a photograph into the game engine, in which the colour of the game was added as well as the texture. Finding out that the colour was added in digitally surprised me because by the style and my knowledge of watercolour I had always assumed that the colour had been added with watercolour due to hit having that sort of muted and waterblened look that all watercolour priced have, however this look could be done the the colour being added on top of already textured, scanned in paper. They have and incredible use of texture in the game which they created for referencing photos taken of real rotten pieced of wood and rusted metal and old walls.
Games design notes from Amanita - challenge is really important in gaming but its not vital in order to have a good game, a game that shows this is well is 'Dear Esther' in which you only walk and explore and island and you don't really have any challenges that you face, but it is still and enjoyable and fun game because of the small details that are added, such as being bale to chase and interact with bees in 'Dear Esther". These small little interactions are called 'interactive toys' and when the people were researching and cresting Machanarium they decided that it would be import t for the game to include lost of them as little side quests, because they would make the game more interesting to the player. From personal experience when playing a game I love to search random spots for these sort of hidden easter eggs, fondant them makes me feel sort of special because its hidden and not all the players would find them and including lost of them in a game would create a more personal experience for the player. Another really important part in adventure games in the replayability of them, which is often said within the gaming community that adventure like games lack. I personally don't think that it is true because if you like a certain song you will listen to it over and over again and I don't see why this doesn't apply to games, since starting this project I have played Machinarium demo for the first time loved it and played it many times since so I think this idea is extremely false. Each time I have played it I have found a new easter egg and considering I'm only playing the demo i cant imagine the amount that would be in the full version.
Amanita made sure their game had a constant feel of unpredictability, for example there is a quest in the game in which you are asked by a fan robot a few quiz questions and in order to complete the quest you need to answer the questions wrong, answering wrong angers the robot which means you can proceed. This sense of unknowing gave the game an organic can human feel and also more importantly made it fun and interesting to play, in previous games I have played where you have to answer quiz questions it starts to feel as if you are at school and are taking a test which isn't how I want to feel when I am gaming in my free time.
Business and marketing of Machanarium
Amanita said it was very important to start early with marketing and build a community and when creating that sense of community you should try and have a creative approach to doing it. A way that Amanita did this was by having a massive sale on the game where they brought the price down from £17.99 to £5 in a sale tat they called the 'pirate amnesty' because they needed the press to notice their sale and use them to inform others because the game was only available on the Amanita website and wasn't yet on steam. They called it 'pirate amnesty' because of the amount of people who pirated the game, this idea ended up working because it was featured on every known news website and game media and ended up selling more than 20,000 copies in a week.
In the video seminar that I watched they spoke about how important it was to keep updating and improving and expanding upon the game even after its initial release because things will go wrong, Its also very important to pay attention to customer support and consumer feedback because it can increase your revenue and keeps that sense of community going even years after a game has been released. Merchandise is also very important in a community, things like plushies and collectables are greatly valued and is definitely a good idea if you are successful in creating your game and it is popular enough to sell merch you should.
youtube
I got most of my information for this post from the video above and don't get ,me wrong the video was very educational and has taught me loads but my god was it difficult to watch, the dude presenting it had the most monotone voice I had ever heard. However the knowledge that I now have about what goes into creating a game, keeping something stylised even if its not perfect, creating and curating a community and how to keep that game going years after its release.

Wouldn't it be more to the point to celebrate real (living or dead) Jewish ladies that have made or are making a real difference to peoples lives than an actress playing a fictional superhero. & If you are familiar with comic book industry including DC and how it sexualizes women you wouldn't be promoting her all the time.
Hi there,
It’s funny that you mention my posts about Gal Gadot.  I often promote several incredible women who have helped to shape modern Judaism.  I suggest searching through tags for:  Miriam, Esther, Ruth, Anat Hoffman, Rabbi Sally Preisand,  Prime Minister Golde Meir, Anne Frank, Hannah Senesh, Dr Ruth, Rabbi Regina Jonas, Rabbi Alysa Stanton, Gloria Steinem, Justice Ruth Bader Ginzberg, Betty Friedan….  Or alternatively, you can search for “feminist,” “feminism,” “gender,” “gender studies,” “misogyny,” etc.
Gal Gadot is a modern hero.  Not only is she a Jewish movie star, but an Israeli who is in one of the most important roles in cinematic history for women: the first *real* superhero movie.  Not only does it pass the infamous bechdel test, but it has created a phenomenon.
Does Gadot get sexualized?  Absolutely.  But that is not, nor will ever be my intent here. I post images and articles about her success for the same reason I post content about other great people throughout Jewish history:  from the infamous RBG, to Rabbi Sally Preisand, all Jewish women count.  Especially those who have really transformed the Jewish and or secular world for the better.
If you would like to have a more in-depth conversation about this topic, please don’t hesitate to personally reach out over a direct message.  Anonymous messages are really not overly productive!

It’s Fine Press Friday!
Halloween is just around the corner and in the spirit of all things weird and spooky this Fine Press Friday we present the peculiar Purgatoys letterpress printed by Dikko Faust and Esther K. Smith at their Purgatory Pie Press in an edition of 150 signed copies. The Purgatoys are a collection of interactive paper oddities from five different book artists in collaboration with Smith and Faust. They were printed on a Vandercook-4 press, and they are encased in a black portfolio made by Patricia Clark. The five toys in the set are:
Buggy Night by Judy Hoffman, 1999
Miss Manageability by Harvey Redding, 2000
The Happersett Accordion by Susan Happersett, 2001
The Divine Diviner by Stephanie Brody Lederman, 2001
Transmorgri-Factory by Chris Collicott, 2004
Richard Goodman writes for Fine Books & Collections magazine:
“Purgatory Pie Press is a husband and wife affair, with Dikko Faust the typographer and printer, and Esther Smith, his wife, the designer. The press is located in TriBeCa, in lower New York City, in rather cramped quarters that contain a small Vandercook Press, drawers of type safely tucked away, and everything else very much demonstrating various works in progress in different states of completion. Faust was the first to come to New York, and then Smith followed shortly thereafter. They married in 1980, and their first joint project—Faust had already printed several books of poetry—was their wedding invitation.”
Esther K. Smith and Dikko Faust were the visiting artists in our 2015 Ettinger Book Artist Series. You can read a wonderful article on the Purgatory Pie Press here.

1918 Pt1 - The Great War
Tumblr media
As the men went off to war, Marianna settled in quickly as the lady of the house. She strutted around like the queen of the castle. Elena couldn't help but cringe every time she entered the room. She couldn't understand how David could have fallen for someone like her.
Tumblr media
Elena tried her best to help Marianna with running the farm. "We'll need to water the pumpkins and the watermelons should be ready for gathering. We can go to Finchwick tomorrow and see what we can sell."
As Elena explained the chores, Marianna scrunched her nose in disgust.
Tumblr media
"Gardening is a man's job."
"Well we have to do our part while our men are away. There's a lot to do still to keep this place running."
"Well we should hire more hands to run things until our husbands return."
"That's not how things work, Marianna."
"Well it should be."
Tumblr media
Elena wasn't the only one Marianna didn't get along with. Soon Hezekiah started having nightmares. "What is all that noise?"
"I...I thought I saw something under the bed."
"Do you have any idea how late it is?"
Hezekiah started crying. "I wasn't trying to wake you up."
Tumblr media
"Well you did!" Marianna greatly valued her beauty sleep and didn't appreciate it being interrupted by Elena's "bratty" children. "You kids need to grow up. Your father is at war and that means all of us need to do our part. That means growing up and not disturbing the adults."
Tumblr media
Some time later Lizbeth started having nightmares as well, and got a similar talk. "Just look at your brother, he got over it. It's time for you to grow up too."
"I told you to be quiet, Lizzie" Hezekiah had learned that real life monsters were worse then the ones under his bed
Tumblr media
Unaware of how Marianna was treating her children, Elena continued to try to make things work with Marianna. She couldn't stand the thought of seeing the farm go to dust while David was gone so she worked hard to teach Marianna everything that Abigail had taught her.
Tumblr media
But while the women were trying to keep things running at home, the men were fighting for their lives and some didn't make it. Silas Mizrahi was the first to fall leaving his sister's, Jemmah and Esther, without the societal protection of a man in their house.
Tumblr media
Then Daniel fell. His last moments were filled with regret, knowing that he had been a horrible husband and absent father. He could have done better. He should have left Henford sooner. Then maybe he and Elena would have had a chance to love each other.
Tumblr media
Five Mizrahi men (and one Hoffman) left Henford-on-Bagley to join the war. Only 2 Mizrahi's returned. The war left a large scar on the small county town and the family as a whole. One thing was certain, everything was about to change.
