Can't help thinking about the major differences between the three Eternals couples and how, in a way, they're all both parallels and foils for each other.
Sersi and Ikaris are the main couple of the film but the fact that they don't work together is also plain. I mean everyone points out their lack of chemistry but I can't help but feel like that was the point.
They're a classic case of "love isn't enough". They love each other. Practically flaunt their relationship in everyone's faces when they're together because they're that wrapped up in each other and don't care about anyone else. But it's not enough. At their core, Sersi and Ikaris are very different people and motivated by very different things. Eventually those things get in the way and they have to let each other go. They simply don't share enough common ground in terms of ideals to make things work which is why ultimately they break up. Sersi isn't even all that sad about the separation and we know it's been a while so obviously that's the reason but even so, there's an acceptance in her even when she meets Ikaris again. It's an acceptance that things are over and that they're better off that way too.
Sersi loves the humans. Is practically one of them, that's how much she loves living among them and being with them. They fascinate her and she respects them undlessly. Ikaris couldn't care less. He sees them as lesser or expendable. He can tolerate being around them for Sersi but it's not enough for him to change his views on them. He loves her so he does this thing for her except it's not something as simple as sharing a hobby. To Sersi these humans are important. To Ikaris they are not. There is a fundamental divide between ideals here that love simply cannot bridge. They have love. But they do not have understanding. Sersi is unable to understand Ikaris loyalty to Arishem. Ikaris is unable to understand Sersi's love of the humans. And even without understanding, they do not have respect for each others choices, not because they don't want to, but because their choices are on such opposite sides of the spectrum that reaching a middle ground is impossible.
At the end they reach a point where they respect each other but the love they have has changed. They cannot walk the same path and so they turn away from each other and go to walk their own.
Tumblr media
Then we have Druig and Makkari.
In a way they're closest to Sersi and Ikaris. Druig is a lot like Ikaris in how stubborn he is and how strongly he stands his ground. But he's a lot like Sersi too in how much he loves the humans and values them for their humanity. Makkari is also Sersi. She loves the humans too. But she loves what they create more and like Ikaris she cannot understand them in why they destroy what they create. But Makkari not understanding the humans doesn't lessen her compassion for them. And Druig not trusting the humans to their own devices doesn't lessen his respect for them as a whole.
In their case, love is enough. Because they have common values. They can weather a separation that comes from a disagreement on this fundamental ideal because they share enough of their other ideals to make it work. Makkari doesn't believe the humans should be controlled. Druig agrees to an extent. It's why he doesn't take over the whole world as he tells Sersi. But he needs his peace of mind and to do that he does control some of them. Makkari respects that is his decision even if she doesn't agree with it.
Everyone says they're best friends to lovers which is true. They are. They know each other inside out. They know each other's highs and lows and support them through it (the "Stay strong" scene). Their relationship is still new in a way or hasn't even really begun which is why they're still playful and childish with each other. They're youthful in their love because it's what they both are. Playful and mischievous. Both like teasing and tricking and playing around. Their personalities mesh in that way as well. They have their differences, but they accept those about each other. They don't just have love. They have understanding and respect for each others choices as well. That's why they work, unlike Sersi and Ikaris. They're able to reach a middle ground even with their disagreement. They have taken the time to grow in themselves apart form each other and come back together when they are ready to grow together. They respect themselves and each other enough to understand that they needed that time apart and once they have come into themselves enough, they are ready to prioritize their relationship together. If they had not done that they would have crashed and burned.
Tumblr media
And finally we have Gilgamesh and Thena.
These two can be juxtaposed really nicely with Sersi and Ikaris because unlike those two who are married in name, Gil and Thena are married in action. The whole "In sickness and in health" vow is reminiscent of their relationship because Gilgamesh spends his entire time on Earth after their mission caring for Thena. He says he would "do it again, on every planet." meaning he does not regret it and even if it is difficult (because caring for an ill person is always difficult) he thinks it is worth it. That their relationship is worth it.
Thena and Gilgamesh are two people who love each other, understand each other inside and out and are on the exact same page. She's a warrior goddess and he's a warrior god. Their specializations/powers are matching. They are in perfect harmony even in battle and afterwards they help dust each other off and walk away from the wreckage.
Gilgamesh holding his hand out for Thena after they finish fighting off the deviant in the beginning of the film is very gentlemanly behavior which kind of parallels with Ikaris' propriety in approaching too, further drawing out both the similarities and differences between them.
Gil and Thena are the actual married couple. They have spent every high and low together. They are not just best friendsike Druig and Makkari but they are more because they have grown together and with each other and accommodated each other's growth. We don't see it but it's woven into that relationship. They are strong alone but together they are unstoppable. Their every move is coordinated because they have known each other so long they are so finely in tune with each other and so even if they aren't married in name, we can see they are married in actions.
Tumblr media
The Eternals are split into Thinkers and Fighters and its important to note the dichotomy of these in the couples too.
Sersi and Ikaris are a Thinker and Fighter.
Druig and Makkari are a Thinker and Fighter.
Thena and Gilgamesh are Fighter and Fighter.
Drukkari and Ikersi are the same in this regard. They're not exactly on the same page with each other however, as mentioned earlier, Drukkari have an acceptance of each other's choices that Ikersi do not have. This fundament difference in how they go about their relationships is what makes them last. Gilgathena tho, are the exact same category. They're both Fighters, representative of them being on the exact same page completely.
All three couples have their differences from each other but all three also draw remarkable similarities as well which contrast each other enough to act as foils.
Which is why, it's easy to see that Sersi and Ikaris are the couple who tried but couldn't make it work, Druig and Makkari are the couple who know how to settle their differences enough to make it work and Thena and Gilgamesh are the couple who have already withstood the test of time to enforce the strength of their relationship.
I just think it's beautiful that, whether intentional or not, for all the different types of love discussed in Eternals already, there's this clear contrast in all types of romantic love depicted too.
The wizened love that depicts constancy and a long age spent together.
The playful intense love that depicts youth and freshness but something you build to last.
And the worn and weary love that was once bright but now weathered to a good friendship and deep respect but can be nothing more.
Anyway that's just something I had in mind so I wrote up this little think piece. Wouldkbe to hear other opinions on this as well.

Centuries. It had been centuries since Druig had seen her. His fellow Eternals stood before the massive gates of what seemed to be Y/Ns residence. He kept his face expressionless. In that exact moment he felt relieved that he was the only one with abilities to read minds. He hadn't felt this nervous in quite some time.
Ikaris had walked up to the gates and gone to push them open.
Despite being in the back Thena was the one to speak up and share her knowledge . "It's locked" she stated. She knew Y/N well enough that the enchantments that surrounded this place were strong enough to keep even them at bay.
"Thank you." Ikarus said sarcastically and turned to face the large group. Despite knowing that it wouldn’t open, he still had tried. Sure enough the  gates didn’t budge
"It would be pretty helpful if the sorceress was outside with us huh? Not ya know... uh in there." Kingo stated and stared looking back past the gates. "I mean how protected is it?" He asked looking to the group.
Druig looked down, his hands clasped behind his back. "If she is as I remember. This will be a fortress unlike any we've seen in ages".
Kingo raised his hand and furrowed his brow. A yellow ball of energy seemed to leak and form from his finger tips. He shot it at the gates, expecting them to burst open at the sheer force. It was at least worth a try.
"Did you think that was going to work?" Sprite asked looking up at the male. Her arms crossed as she stared at him.
"I don't see you doing anything, Sprite." Kingo argued back.
It seemed as if every Eternal took a deep breath to prepare them to deal with the squabble that was about to occur. They hadn't the time for this.
"Enough of this." Druig stated and made his way to the front of the gates. He stood before the beautifully crafted metal. This place looked extravagant. It was like you had kept yourself hidden in your favorite era. He found himself hiding a smile. You hadn't changed. You always hated letting go of the eras as they came and went. It seemed atleast from the outside that you hadn't let yourself move past it.
(Y/N) has been quite popular back during the Rococo period, or so he had heard. She'd hosted a party once to which he’d been in invited, they all had. Druig had every intent on going, he dreamed about it for months. To go to her palace, the very palace that stood before now. He wanted nothing more than to go and see her again. The thoughts clung to him for months. All he could think of were fantasies of dancing with you for hours. The music, the tension. He could of made that night into the best night of his life. That after all this time he could apologize for abandoning you in Babylon all those years ago. He could right those wrongs. It was the night of the ball and that was when his courage failed him. He had abandoned you for so long, he told himself. You would never be able to forgive him.
And so he didn't go. Druig didn't have the strength to come and face her. He couldn’t.
But now he had no other option. He swiftly made his way to the front gates. "Please..." he said, his voice came out in a whisper. It was unexpected but as Druig approached the gates they swayed open. Like they opened at his very presence.
A smirk tugged at his lips. The need to gloat filled him. He raised his head and looked to Ikaris and Kingo smug as ever. "You see what happens when you ask nicely?" He stated.
The reassurance that his presence alone is what opened her enchanted security did start to chip away at his ever growing nerves. The group strolled to the front. The herd had quite the walk laid out before them till they made it to the front steps on the palace.
Everyone talked amongst themselves as they ascended the stairs before them.
"I haven't seen this many stairs since our temple with the Aztecs." Sprite complained.
Sersi let out a chuckle and looked to the red haired girl. "I think you're forgetting something. I seem to recall a bet you lost in Egypt..."
"Okay Ikaris lost too though" the child defended looking up rather angrily at the others. There were a few scattered laughs.
Once they hit the top of the steps it was quiet. The group finally got to see just how expensive the place looked. There seemed to be a sense of nostalgia as they stared on to the scene before them. A grand fountain stood before the entrance to the building.
Makkari nudged Druig’s side. He was ripped from his thoughts and anxiety for a moment. She could see it in his eyes. “This place is massive...” she signed to him. He intently watched her sign her next statement. “Y/n has really outdone it this time”
Druig took a glance around, sure enough, the Rococo styled Palace was quite the sight. The archetecture was authentic and in perfect condition. Makkari was right, it was impressive.
"I'll keep watch." Druig offered almost immediately, signing as he spoke. His speed shocked quite a few. "You've already dragged the deviants into my home. I'd like to spare hers if we can." The male stated glancing over the group and waiting for any objections. He took note of how Kingo looked at him suspiciously. He fought the urge to roll his eyes.
"You're definitely onto something. Druig, keep watch. Everyone, come on." Ikaris said and looked through the courtyard where finally the main entrance could be seen.
Kingo watched as Druig sat on the marble ring around the fountain, a sadness raked his face. 'So disappointing' he thought to himself as he trailed alongside the others and made his way inside.
As the group wandered through the halls calling the sorceress forward Kingo struck up conversation. He turned to Kuran who was recording the halls they walked.
"I can't believe he pussied out." Kingo said into the air. "I mean really you think nearly 3,000 years and he'd finally get the balls to talk to her again." He said absolutely flabbergasted. The entire group of Eternals seemed to stop and stare at him.
"What are you talking about?" Sersi said furrowing her brow. Her eyes flickered to Sprite who just stood there picking at her nails.
Ikaris, Thena, Makkari, Phastos all joined in their confusion. None of them were quite sure what the man was talking about.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" He said blinking rapidly, now he was lost in his own confusion.
"What are you implying?" Thena arched a brow. She looked to Kingo and then down the rest of the hall.
"Don't tell me-" Kingo said and let out an amused scoff. "You really don't see it?"
"What aren't we seeing?" Makkari signed looking around.
"Does no one else remember Babylon? Or any of the time we spent together before that? Those other 4,000 years?" He mentioned. Kingo rubbed his temples, actually shocked.
"What am I supposed to be remembering?" Ikaris questioned.
Kingo let out a sigh. "Fine since you're so thick..." he moved to stand a few feet infront of the group so he could give his lesson. "So you're trying to tell me you've never noticed how he looked at her? Are you serious? Does no one else have memories of Druig getting absolutely shit faced and flirting with her ruthlessly" He shook his head. "Am i the only one who's noticed? He's been in love with her for centuries" Kingo stated.
"Druig? In love?" Ikaris nearly scoffed at the idea. "Stick to the screen. Comedy isn't your forte."
"I think he’s right" Makkari signed quickly. She looked up to Ikaris and looked him in the eye, she continued to sign. “He only agreed to come once you said we needed to find Y/N.”
"Really?" The white man stated crossing his arms and looking to the girl beside him. “I think it might of been the Deviants. Or Gilgamesh. You both are just crazy” Ikaris shook his head and looked down to Makkari once more. “See if you can find her. This place is a maze and we don’t have the time”
With a simple nod Makkari sped off through the halls.
The conversation continued, Kingo wouldn’t drop it. “Okay but remember back in Rome? Right, when he lost that dagger? The one that Y/N gave him? He cherished that blade more than his own life."
"Sounds like a simp to me" Sprite shrugged and continued on her way into the palace.
Sersi's face twisted in shock. "Sprite!" She scolded.
It was when they made their exit did the pair finally see eachother. Still sitting alongside the fountain with fingertips tracing the water Druig raised his head. Younearly froze. Standing there in your undergarments, or rather what you considered to be your undergarments you froze. Thankfully Sprite was kind enough to give an ever so gentle nudge to snap you out of your daze.. The long white sleeves of your gown pooled around your wrists as you fidgeted for a moment, your corset kept the dress securely kept to your body.
Of course that was when he heard the commotion coming from the doors. Looking ahead to the group he kept his composure as he looked for you. Druig rose to his feet. And met the group.
"I still can't believe it! What's it been huh? two thousand some odd yea-" you began to say
"Two thousand six hundred and forty six..." Druig had said ever so quietly. He had barely whispered it. However Druig wasn't quiet as he thought. He thought no one else had heard. He thought you hadn’t heard.
His chest heaved as he looked up and finally met your gaze after all this time. "You..." his eyes raked down your body. "Look as enchanting as ever" he mused and spoke to you quietly. He then turned to address everyone else, they weren't exactly far he was less than two feet away from the next member. "There's no sign of them yet. I suggest we get a move on."
It was as you laid your eyes upon Druig you were struck with the realization. Your eyes lit up. "Oh how stupid of me! I forgot something inside”
"Cant it wait?" Ikaris asked impatiently.
"I'll be right back." You said turning back towards the palace she called a home.
Just as you went to leave, Kingo furrowed his brow. He stared at the back of Druigs head, just waiting for him to say something. He didn't.
So he did the only thing he could think to do. He shoved Druig forward.
You looked to the stumbling man confused. "I'll come with you" he forced out. Druig was going to have some words later Kingo, that was certain. To say he was pissed was an understatement.
You looked at him and then the group suspiciously. After all you knew these people well. Sure you hadn't seen them in quite some time but you knew them well enough. And of course you knew that Druig was as calm and collected as they came. He was a man who didn't falter or stumble. He doesn't trip up like that.
Hi!!!! This is such a weird fic, I literally saw the movie two days ago and I'm just rolling with the chaos in my brain. But yeah!! This is part one!!

Druig could have just said " Beautiful " once but he said it twice in a very most soothing manner in the most elegantly pleasant and possible way i mean he Just couldn't stop drooling & admiring makkari after seeing her and the way Makkari looks at him at the end is so fucking cute 😭💜❤ its like she's so proud and telling others that " look at my dumbass boyfriend Druig i love him so much "
They Fucking outdid every other Hetero Ships / Romance's in Mcu with a 10 seconds screen time i mean we can literally throw the remaining Het Ships into a trash can and forget about them Drukkari is THAT powerful 🔥, i am really proud of my mom and dad Y'all 😌❤

Love Is Eternal
Attention SPOILER for Eternals!
Request bye anonym!
Warnings: Hair pulling, spanking, rough sex
Words: 1.3 KAttention SPOILER for Eternals!
Masterlist here!
"Do you think Sersi really loves Dane?" asked Sprite Y/N as the two women walked behind the couple after they left his birthday party; she shrugged her shoulders.
"I don't know and it's not really any of my business, Sprite," she replied.
Sprite looked at her. "You don't think it's a mistake? He's human and he's not going to live forever."
Dane turned to them. "Do you want pizza?" he asked them.
"No, thanks!" they both shouted before Y/N turned back to Sprite.
"Love is hard and you can't choose who you fall in love with," she said, thinking for a moment about her relationship with Ikaris; it had been centuries since she'd seen him and she hated that he never told her why he'd left her. They were startled when they suddenly saw something emerge from the water.
"Is that a Deviant?" asked Sprite, and the group started running.
"I thought you said you killed them all centuries ago," Dane shouted and Sprite looked over her shoulder at him.
"You told him about that?", Sersi asked her.
"You believed me?" asked Sprite to him. Sersi used her powers to stop the Deviant for a short time.
"I do now!" he shouted. Sersi told Sprite to watch Dane and Y/N followed her, Sprite also followed her after a few seconds and created dozens of illusions of the three Eternals, but suddenly he spotted them and they started running. Y/N and Sprite were pushed to the ground by the Deviant, but suddenly he was pushed into an empty store. Dane rushed to them and helped them up. The Deviant was thrown against a lamppost by a laser beam and Y/N watched as Ikaris stepped out of the store; he looked at her and smiled slightly.
"Evening, ladies," he greeted them.
"Watch out!" shouted Sersi, as Ikaris was thrown into a bus by the Deviant at that moment. Sersi turned the bus into rose petals and Ikaris began to fight the Deviant until he disappeared into the river. He landed in front of them and Sprite ran to him to hug him.
"Ikaris! I'm so happy to see you!" said Sprite excitedly.
"So you're the pilot?" asked Dane, raising an eyebrow. "I'm Dane."
"Hello Dane," he said simply and looked to Y/N, who however avoided his gaze. They talked briefly about the situation before giving Sersi and Dane time to talk to each other and the three of them went to their shared apartment. Sprite went to her room and left the couple alone. "I didn't mean to hurt you, Y/N."
She looked away from him as he walked closer to her. "You left just like that and I waited so many years for you to come back to me, but you didn't."
"Y/N-," he began, but her smartphone began to ring, interrupting her. She pulled it out of her pocket and answered the call.
"Hi Tom, what's up?" she asked, turning away from Ikaris. "I completely forgot about our date and I don't know if I'll be able to make it tomorrow"-she interrupted herself for a moment and looked at me over her shoulder-"There have been unexpected family issues that I need to take care of." -She smiled slightly and Ikaris crossed his arms in front of his chest- "We'll do it again once I get my issues sorted out, I promise...Yeah, I'll miss you too." Y/N ended the phone call and put it on the table behind him.
"Who is Tom?" asked Ikaris finally, "Is he your boyfriend?"
"Why? It's not like it's your business." She shrugged her shoulders, not wanting to show him that she still had feelings for him.
"Actually, it is my business, after all, you are still my wife," he explained, taking a step toward her.
"Really?" -She laughed hollowly and turned away from him- "We're Eternals; that promise means purely nothing." She could feel him behind her and his breath on her neck.
"You know that's a lie." He leaned in and kissed her under her ear. Ikaris wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her against him; Y/N could feel his erection pressing against her and moaned slightly. He turned her to face him and pushed her against the table; she braced herself with her hands on the table. He wrapped her hair around his hand before kissing her hard; one of her hands was on his chest. After a few seconds, he broke the kiss and pulled her head back as he began kissing her neck. His hands pushed her dress up her thighs and she moaned at the feel of his hands on her skin. Taking advantage of the moment, he pressed his lips to hers again and slid his tongue into her mouth. "You're mine," he said as he broke the kiss.
"You don't own me anymore, Ikaris," she replied, pushing him away from her. She walked away from him to her room without another word, but just as she opened the door, Ikaris pulled her back to him and pushed her into the room. He pushed her against the closed door and grabbed her neck without squeezing. She took a deep breath as she looked at him and bit her lip.
"It seems that you have become disobedient in the last few centuries," he explained, stroking her lower lip with his thumb. "I think you need to be reminded who's in charge." Before she could retort anything, she was turned around and her dress was pulled up by him; with a deft move, he ripped her panties from her body. Y/N moaned softly as he stroked a finger through her damp fold. She winced as he suddenly slapped her butt; his other hand moved to her breast and he began to massage it as he continued to slap her butt. After a few more strokes, he gently caressed her skin; he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her to the bed. Ikaris pushed her down so she could lean on it with her hands. She heard him undo his belt and looked over her shoulder at him. He pushed her further onto the bed before climbing in after her. She could feel his hard cock at her entrance. Ikaris wrapped his hand around her hair and pulled her back against his chest as he thrust hard into her pussy, making her moan loudly. He put his hand over her mouth to keep her from moaning before he began thrusting into her.
"Whose are you?" he asked, thrusting deep inside her with each word. Ikaris kissed her neck and removed his hand for a moment. He pulled his cock almost completely out of her before thrusting quickly into her pussy again.
"To you, Ikaris," she replied with a moan, and he covered her mouth again. He nibbled on her neck and fucked her faster.
"That's right," he said, "Rub your clit." She let her hand wander down and began rubbing her clit rapidly; he could feel her tightening around his cock and it was getting harder to thrust into her. "Come for me." Her body began to shake uncontrollably before she stiffened and climaxed. He thrust deep into her pussy one last time, filling her with his hot cum. Ikaris let her hair go and she propped her arms on the bed as she recovered from her orgasm; after a few seconds his cock slipped out of her pussy and his cum flowed out of her and ran down her leg. He pulled down her dress and put his cock back in his pants before helping her up off the bed. Ikaris brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and kissed her forehead.
"Hey, where are you all?" called Sersi, and Ikaris smiled at Y/N.
"It's time for a family reunion, isn't it?" he asked and she returned his smile as she nodded.
A/N: Have you seen Eternals? What do you think of the movie? I personally loved it💚 And if you have a request for Ikaris, read here my rules!

I can't get over the fact that after many years of mcu we finally got a canon lgbtq main character, emphasis to canon and this character is a badass with the sweetest heart ever and the mind of a genius. He's got a family, he's married to a genuinely good guy and they got a kid and they're all cute and funny.
god i just love Phastos and his family so much i can't even [sobbing]

About Ikaris
SPOILERS under the cut!
Tumblr media
Many of you seem to dislike Ikaris or think he is pure evil, but all I see is a broken man. He was loyal to Arishem for seven thousand years and believed in the mission when he learned the truth from Ajak, but the truth is crushing when you can't tell anyone and have to lie to everyone you love. He left Sersi so he wouldn't have to tell her that the world she loves is doomed. Ignorance is a privilege he no longer has.
Tumblr media
Each of the Eternals has built a life that ties him to Earth, but there is nothing for him there, so he doesn't care about Earth and why would he have built something if he knew Earth was going to perish. And who would react differently if he found out that after 7000 years the mission was useless because his leader suddenly decided to save the Earth. Ikaris is a loyal soldier and is always torn between his duties and his feelings.
Tumblr media
Part of me hopes they will bring Ikaris back into the MCU in some way, since as Kingo said they are just fancy robots and I hope Arishem recreates his most loyal soldier, after all the Celestial still has his memories stored. There is still some hope that he will get the chance to redeem himself and that the Eternals will forgive him....
It may be that it wasn't right of him to have attacked the other Eternals and that he, like Kingo, should have just walked away, but it is his conviction and belief that he is doing the right thing in trying to complete the mission. It's the kind of conviction Loki had in Avengers 2012; he believed that humanity needed to be controlled, but he was also under the control of Thanos. Ikaris believes that one world must be sacrificed for millions of other worlds, but he is under the control of Arishem and has been for seven thousand years. Maybe Ikaris won't be liked, but please remember, any character can redeem himself and in the end Ikaris listened to his heart and did the right thing. I think Marvel could have made something fantastic out of his character if they hadn't let him fly into the sun.

In Defense of the Eternals
(This is in response to @sharonccrter’s lovely defense of Ikaris.)
I’ve seen a lot of ambivalence — and outright negativity — towards Eternals, and particularly to the main loveline between Ikaris and Sersi. And while the film did have some narrative holes, I also think that at its heart, Chloe Zhao accomplished the complex love story that this film was marketed as.
I think Ikaris is a deeply flawed but sympathetic character, who is just loving in the only way he knows how. He is so steeped in his belief that protecting Sersi is the only way to love her well, that he doesn't think to communicate with and support her (which is why, though she loved him, she outgrew their relationship).
He embodies a lot of toxic masculinity, but not because he's evil. He's just a loyal soldier, built a fighter, and likely influenced by this world’s patriarchal ideology as a result of his created nature and his Earthly social identities.
The Sersi/Ikaris relationship is full of love but also unhealthy, as so many human relationships are. They were infatuated with one another from almost the beginning, and they loved and appreciated the differences in each others’ beliefs and abilities.
But over time, just as with so many relationships, how did those differences affect their communication? How did they struggle in their different ideas of what love looks like and how one should approach conflict and challenging times? How did their identities feed unhealthy dynamics in their relationship? How did they navigate being an interracial couple in a world that was hostile to that for ages?
And then how did they grow apart? How did that enable Sersi to find herself?
As Thena said, protecting someone you love is the most natural thing in the world, and Ikaris did that. He loved Sersi so much. But in trying to protect Sersi without communicating with her, without trusting her own ability to handle grief, he embodies so much of the patriarchal beliefs that are so entrenched in human cultures.
By (1) running away from his problems; (2) trying to take it all into his own hands through noble sacrifice; and (3) rather than communicating and leaning into the love and support of his wife and his family, isn’t Ikaris just behaving like so many human men? And aren’t these men taught to do so by a culture of toxic masculinity and ages-old ideas of patriarchy?
It’s likely that this pattern of dealing with issues - particularly in Ikaris/Sersi’s relationship - is why Sersi struggles with insecurity. She likely has had Ikaris (and other Eternals) make decisions for her throughout the millenia. Ikaris has probably taken care of so many problems for her, used physical force to solve problems rather than communicate, and/or FLOWN AWAY FROM CONFLICT (goddamn).
How patronizing is it to think lying to your partner and running away from her is a better solution than trusting her to process the truth in her own ways?
But at the same time, he did it because he loved her so deeply. So deeply that he would rather have given her a form of happiness at the expense of his (being with her). And how many of us have loved in a misguided way? How many of us have tried to love others by trying to do what we thought was best for them? I know I have.
I think Chloe Zhao tried to show us this millenia-long character development. She tried to show rather than tell, weaving her gentle touch through a very expository script, despite the limitations of being a feature film, and the limits of the Marvel signature film formula that was fine-tuned by a long series of men.
This film tried its best to explore the ways in which the Eternals were flawed beings who influenced and were influenced by the environments they lived in. Against Arishem’s design, just like the Deviants, the Eternals evolved with and learned from the beauty and the ugliness of humanity, and ultimately were more human than they realized.
Which leads me to the many questions about how the Eternals experienced the world, humans, and each other in the context of real structural and systemic problems. The questions that they touched so lightly upon, but only served to raise more questions.
How would each character’s identities and intersectionalities have informed the ways they moved through the world across the ages? When they were no longer perceived as ‘gods,’ how would the world have treated the Eternals as the humans they presented as? How did they navigate and blend into humanity amidst all the systemic and social inequities that rose over time?
How would each Eternal subconsciously internalize these ideologies, and how did that inform their relationships with each other, the ways they loved and resented each other? I loved Sprite’s story for how it touched on this, but I wanted more.
Just as Ikaris manifests all this patriarchy, how would the other Eternals have internalized white supremacy, sexism, misogyny, ableism, homophobia? Surely they did — I think one of the most apparent scenes of these beliefs manifested was when Kingo and Sprite verbally expressed a desire for Ikaris to lead them, as the ‘strongest.’
How would their social identities have played into Thena’s and Phastos’ resentment of Ikaris (which made itself apparent in their delight to fight him and ‘clip his wings’)?
How did white supremacy and the influences of colonialism/imperialism reinforce Druig’s belief that controlling whole populations was the solution to them controlling each other?
How did navigating centuries of imperialism, African enslavement, and lynching as a Black, gay man make moving through the last millenia really fucking shitty and downright dangerous for Phastos? Did he feel conflicted about protecting humans when the most powerful of them were persecuting, oppressing, and enslaving people who looked like him, loved like him?
Did Ajax move to the middle of nowhere South Dakota because she was sick and tired of being underestimated, talked down to, and discriminated against for moving through the world as a Latina woman with an accent, despite being a leader of ‘gods’ for over 7,000 years?
How did navigating the intersection of racism/sexism/misogyny as an Asian woman married to a hyper-protective hyper-masculine man play into Sersi’s insecurity and conflict avoidance?
(Let me tell you, as an Asian American woman who’s had an unhealthy relationship with a man, I felt very seen by Sersi’s imposter syndrome, insecurities, and growth.)
I wish this film could have been a TV show. As a show, it would have had more time to tease out its more complex moral questions and built a world that could truly hold the weight of its diversity. How could Chloe Zhao have been able to explore the complexities of experience beyond the sort of surface-level diverse representation that we ended up with?
Not that any whole character should boil down to their marginalized identities, but navigating the impacts of social injustice is an essential part of living on a diverse Earth. Holding this heaviness in its story is something that Black Panther did well, and something I wish this film had tackled instead of just touting representation.
But how much of the negative response to the film is because people are still looking for a white man’s hero narrative in their Marvel films? How many of the people who have space for their opinions are white cishet able-bodied men who can’t identity with a lens that isn’t theirs? (I think a lot.)
Is the backlash because a man, and traditional forms of toughness and masculinity, weren’t centered and glorified? (If you can’t tell, I think the answer is yes.)
At the end of the day, Chloe Zhao centered a WOC who grew into her leadership and trust in self, who grew out of a relationship with a man who couldn’t love her the way she needed to be anymore, and I love her for it.
To clarify, this is not written to blame any people involved in the making of the film, or any reviewers! I did think that this film fell a little short in storytelling, but I wanted to recognize all the beautiful world-building and care that was put into this film.
This is an attempt to understand the characters in the context of their social environments. It’s an attempt to wrestle with opportunities not explored and questions not answered, and an attempt to have compassion for all the characters’ strengths, flaws, and ways in which they were products of the world around them, yet still grew and changed.
(And this is not a defense of white men. But unlike a lot of movies, Ikaris as a white cishet male hero was not centered, and was accurately portrayed for all the ways his worldview made him harmful. And Richard Madden still played the character with a lot of tenderness and vulnerability, and he deserves more than the bashing he’s receiving.)
