the heels of her palms press deeply against her closed eyes and the breath tries to settle again even as light explodes in loki’s mind. she’s shaking, more than shaking, trembling, crumbling under the weight of fresh prophecy writing itself inside of her, as if it matters, as if any of it can matter. how many times can she lament being chosen for this? how many times will the searing pain of chaos unfolding violate her, the knowledge of it full and brimming and maddening?

she is too small a thing to contain it all. in, one, two, three, four. the words spill senseless out of her mouth, the shaping of them the only way to be rid of them. out, one, two, three, four, five, a mixture of languages she can’t even follow as the course of a future she’s always known warps and rewrites itself, the labyrinth shifting, all things known, all things unknown, both inside her.

alright, so. WILLIAM & THOMAS MAXIMOFF, the twins WANDA MAXIMOFF, created, birthed, and were later killed and whose existences were erased completely? those children were cells in the universe; they could be seen and observed by the cosmic entity that is the UNIVERSE. the circumstances of their making may not be completely natural   (  as in a course of events isn’t a natural progression  )   but they were born and grew, and then died. 

HOWEVER, billy kaplan & tommy shepherd? they’re not natural beings, in that aspect. especially billy, considering canon material has never really delved into who and what tommy exactly is   (  except for crumbs here and there ),   but i will consider Tommy as the other half of Billy’s soul, and therefore they have the same hold over the time-space continuum and reality   (  something @machimoff​ agrees upon  ),   just manifested differently ;     Billy describes Tommy's powers with:

as i perceive it, when the original aspects were killed, the twins returned in time to protect their essences and survive mephisto’s attack. to ensure that, william’s soul fused with the infinite entity that is THE DEMIURGE. he is an jar, so to say, a cocoon. but an infinitesimal fraction of infinity is still INFINITY.   billy is not a vessel, he is the dyad of the universe   (  he and tommy do form a dyad of the universe, actually, seen that they share the same soul, with wanda maximoff being the mother, the @nexusbeing​: the chaos from which all is born  ).

in the end, it’s easier to infer that Eternity is an aspect of Billy, a personification of one of the demiurge's creations   (  the Universe, the Multiverse  )   so the cosmos can also enjoy what is to be alive: which is the demiurge's utter satisfaction.  he created the PHOENIX FORCE for a similar reason. Life and Fire Incarnate. i see the demiurge neither as completely benevloent or malevolent, simply cyclical in creation: there is death in birth and birth in death, but this is beside the point. 

Suffices to say here that Billy and Tommy aren't visible or perceived by even the eldest of marvel’s cosmic beings. The twins are literally rifts in the multiverse, for their creation didn’t happen in this or any veil of reality.

It’s like a giant cosmic joke, right?  The drumbeat in the background of every single event in Tony’s life; he gets his agency, his autonomy, what little influence and strength he has, from the deaths of those around him.  The Iron Man exists because Yinsen died to give him time to exist.  The Avengers exist ultimately because of that sacrifice.  Every last scrap of history he has echoes with the deaths of others, himself, the multiverse, down to this point.

Ikaris used his last breath to pass on this, a secret he should not have, to ensure the defeat of the Final Host, and now, after the fact, Tony can admit he’s terrified of it.  He’s not an Eternal, he’s not the right conduit for that kind of knowledge, and he knows it as much as it rankles (he can accept, however, on a larger scale that he’s but a speck of dust in the universe and that on the whole he, and earth itself, are consequently inconsequential).  He doesn’t need that kind of knowledge, hadn’t the incursions and the inversion and any of that taught anyone anything?  He can’t be trusted, not with a scrap of power, not with leading a team, not with anything.  His ego always overrides his common sense, it’s a flaw and he’s always known; he’s rotten, rotten down to the core and doing his best to stave it off as best he can and failing at it miserably.

“I don’t want it.”  He’d pass it on it a heartbeat, if there were anyone left to still pass it on to.  Ikaris could have picked better if he’d had time, could have picked Stephen, and while Tony’s not one to shirk a responsibility, while he certainly commits to what he has to do, this goes a little beyond a piece of paper, or a few rogue armors, or building a few bombs.   He can fully conceptualize each horrifying scenario that can come about, just from him having that knowledge.  “I know one of you is listening.  I’d yank it out myself but something tells me I could give myself the mother of all ice pick lobotomies and it’d still be there.”

He gets it now, at least, why he’d had to sacrifice so much to get even Odin’s attention.  He, humanity, they’re nothing, a virus, a plague.  A disease of the universe.  The stars above the Mountain are cold, cold, unfeeling, and he maybe feels a little stupid for thinking his one little voice shouting out to the cosmos even matters, but he’s got nothing left to sacrifice at this point, not really, except that little bit of dignity.  “Answer me!’

“Do you remember when we told you that we didn’t know if there’s a name for a colour of our souls?,” asked Noble, Their starry eyes staring at the gentle sky, searching for Their ever familiar friend in the stars and moon. Hope burnt in Them. “Apparently, there was a team from this university who discovered the true colour of the Universe!” A pause.
