“hey, mum?”

james wanders down the stairs, leaning over the banister to see if anyone is in the kitchen. “are you busy?” he asks, stepping off the last step and turning the corner. “it’s okay if you are! i can come back later. it’s not-“

“what is it, james?” euphemia pushes her small spectacles up the bridge of her nose, folding her newspaper shut and looking to the doorway. “are you okay?” she turns away, reaching for the kettle, “i’ll make us some tea.”

“yeah, yeah. i-i’m fine.” james stutters as he attempts to flatten the hair on the crown of his head, “i mean…” he stares down at the ground, picking at his nails, “i need to talk to you.”

“ah, i’d best leave you be then.” fleamont sighs, smiling gently as he begins to stand from the stool he had been sitting on. he passes through the doorway, pressing a hand to james’ shoulder before continuing down the entrance hall.

“actually, dad, i think it’d be good if you were here too.” james nervously responds, stepping further into the kitchen and steadying himself on the counter as he lowers himself on to the stool. “i- um, it’s kind of important.” he takes a deep breath, chewing the corner of his lip, “i need to tell you something.” he stands and begins to pace back and forth across the small space between the breakfast bar and the dining table. “i don’t know how to say this. i- um. i..” james begins to pace more quickly until euphemia gently  holds him still by his shoulders.

“whatever it is you need to tell us, we’re here for you, sweetheart.” she stares straight at james, watching as tears begin to obscure his hazel eyes.

he takes another deep breath, trying to fight back his emotions but ultimately, feeling tears begin to spill down his cheeks. “i… i think i’m…” james stops himself, searching for the right words, “i don’t know what i am. i just know i like girls, a lot, but i also like boys, a lot, too. i don’t know. i’m sorry, mum.” he chokes, sobbing into his mother’s shoulder as she wraps her arms around him.

eventually, euphemia gently pushes him from her shoulder. “oh, love. what are you apologising for? i’m sorry!” she chuckles softly, “i’m sorry you thought we’d be disappointed in you. we love you so, so much, and we can’t wait to love whoever you bring home one day. we don’t care, as long as you’re happy.” she reaches out, carefully wiping james’ tears away.

fleamont makes his way over to the both of them, ruffling james’ hair and laughing softly. “you really thought we’d be upset?” he shakes his head, “go on, go get yourself cleaned up. we’ll get you a cup of tea ready for when you come back down.” as if on cue, the kettle begins screaming from the hob. james smiles, looking at them both before going into the downstairs bathroom, “i love you.”

euphemia places three teabags into separate mugs, nudging fleamont with her elbow.

“i told you, didn’t i?”
