"He's angry at me-"

"He's not angry at you, ma." Fez sighs, his hands reaching out to rest on my shoulders as he leans down to meet my gaze. His lips part to speak but another voice cuts him off.

"I'm angry at her!" A whine leaves my lips as I flop back into the couch dramatically, my hands reaching up to cover my face as frustrated tears rise to my lashes.

I knew that when we told Ash that we were pregnant that his response wouldn't be the best. He was extremely protective over me and has been since the moment Fez and I got together. It was safe to say he'd do anything for me to keep me safe and healthy and I've known for a while that he looks up to me as an older sister if not a mother figure in his life. He clung to me like a child clung to a parent, not so much physically but emotionally he relied on me for a lot, for things that he couldn't turn to anyone else for.

"He's being a dumbass- Ash! Get out here and apologize to her or else she's gonna keep fuckin' cryin, man." Fez huffs, his hands rubbing over the top of his head as he kneels down between my legs, hand reaching out to take mine in his.

Hearing loud stomps come from down the hall, I watch as Ashtray enters the room, a pout on his lips and his arms folded over his chest as he throws himself down onto the chair across from me.

"Apologize to Y/n." Fez asks, sitting down beside me as he wraps an arm around my shoulder, watching as Ash rolls his eyes, muttering out a quiet apology as sad tears stream down my cheeks.

"Ash you know that no matter what happens I'm always gonna love and protect you." I sniffle, brushing the tears from my cheeks as Fez's hand secures on my thigh. Ash's eyes dip lower, avoiding me as he lets out a grunt of acknowledgement. "Just think about it. You're gonna be an uncle to a little ass-kicker. Another little one to protect." A soft smile spreads across my lips at the thought of him interacting with mine and Fez's child, knowing that he would be an amazing uncle even though he's a bit rough around the edges.

Ash's face lightens a bit at my reassuring words, a small nod thrown my way as I relax, watching as his eyes flicker up to find mine. "Fine." He shrugs, pushing all jealousy and insecurity to the back of his mind as his shoulders relax.

"Get over here and give me a hug, asshole."

The one reason why I liked Euphoria

Even though it's been a while since the show aired, I think it's important to talk about this at any time. Euphoria's not perfect. It sure has it's flaws, especially the S2. But that's not what this post is about (I'll get to that some other time, don't worry). What I wanna get into is one of the things I liked about it and the number one reason why I feel like it's important to watch.

All the characters you go through the story with are flawed, that much is obvious. Rue has mental issues and grieves her father's death, both of which she deals with by taking opioids. Jules has mental problems and a very complicated relationship with her own body. Cassie has dependence issues. Maddy has a toxic image of herself in her mind she wants desperately to achieve. Lexi is ignored and not appreciated and uses her bitterness to make the infamous musical. Kat has her internalized misandry. Cal has personality problems and a hidden regret for not being ever able to explore his relationship with Derek. Nate has the toxicity of Cal's views of the world to fight with and is scared to explore his own sexuality because of it. Fez can't escape the net of drug dealing he was caught up in as a young boy. Ali became an addict as violent as his father - the one thing he swore he'd never be.

What's the interesting part - what makes this show so fucking significant - is the fact that there is a great effort to tell us precisely why the characters are the way they are. What made them struggle and be imperfect. They've taken care of that by making every episode's prologue into a summary of each character's backstory. Now I'll admit - they aren't all 100% equal in quantity, some characters are given more space than others, especially in the overall story arch. But it's close enough to equal (in the S1 at least) for everyone to be able to get a good picture of them all.

This aspect of the show is by my standards the most fundamental part of it. I believe in determinism (and incompatible free will, I'll get to that in a moment), which is a term that gets misunderstood a lot, so let me explain it really quickly. Determinism states that all events are determined by the previously existing causes. That means everything that happens did so because of something. A person builds a house because his previous one got blown off by a tornado, for example. Now, determinism applied to people's actions (and there it gets to my own personal understanding of the term) means that everybody is not only heavily influenced by their surroundings, but actually our surroundings ARE what makes us. Everything we are, everything we do in life, is based on something or someone else. Every decision we make is acting upon our belief system that was created from our life experience - what our parents tought us (conciously or unconciously), what we learned at school, what people influenced us. Every time you decide to do something, the 'free will', as we call it, is actually just a bunch of patches of your life experience and knowledge and all of that is created by the context of your past. Taken to the extreme, I don't think we have any free will at all. This is of course highly philosophical and in real life people couldn't act upon this (by which I mean act like nobody has a free will and thus can't be responsible for their actions), because we wouldn't be able to function as a society. But that doesn't mean it's not true. For example every murderer, every rapist, every person deemed by society as 'pure evil' did what they did because something drove them to do it and they weren't able to decide otherwise because of their life experience. What they did was bad and it should be dealt with in some way, and although I firmly believe that punishment is not the answer, it is true that we should react to a bad behaviour. And we should do it with as full as possible context in our minds.

That's what I love about Euphoria. They tell you about the characters' actions, whether they be good or bad, and let you base your decision of what to think about them on what they've been through and on the real reasons behind what they're doing. That's also what made me actually like all the characters, not just have my favourites. Even though we might not like what they're doing throughout the show, their actions can be neatly traced back to their backstories, and yeah, I know this should be a standard in writing, but it sadly isn't, so I'm really glad to be able to experience it in the show.

Some thoughts on Euphoria (S1, special episodes and S2) in no particular order:

The actors look so old, it’s way beyond believable that their characters are high schoolers. Why not just set it in college? Life doesn’t end after High School. The only logical reason I can see is that Nate/Jules had to be underage for the story, but c’mon. Especially in the beginning of S1 I was so bothered by this.

I don’t really see why some people claim the show glamorizes drug use. Sure, there are aestetically pleasing visualisations of being high, but generally it’s always treated as something destructive for Rue and her surroundings.

The framework for Rue’s narration is weird. Yes, she knows these people, some of them are her friends. Yes, it is mentioned that she feels like she has a visionary power when she’s on drugs. But all the details in her narration that she can’t possibly know, that might of course be true, because they fit in well with what she really does know about these people for a fact - these details and backstories are sold as factual to the viewer? I mean, the narration and what is visually shown about the backstory of the people is always the same. So, is it just Rue’s imagination to go in line of what she is saying? Otherwise Rue kinda has to be an all-knowing narrator. And that’s a really odd choice, in my opinion. But maybe I’m just overthinking this.

My favourite characters in s1 were Cassie and Kat. No wonder s2 was disappointing.

I enjoyed the special episodes. They were unlike anything I’ve seen before and so well written.

S2 episode 5 was so intense. Having to watch Rue destroy every good relationship in her life was so heavy and devastating.

I’ve heard people say Cassie was the villain of season 2. Why, though? I never would have interpreted her character that way. Just... needy of therapy like everyone else in this show. From the beginning on she felt bad for what she was doing to Maddy, and I know that doesn’t justify her behaviour, but there was no malicious intent inside her, only the twisted obsession for Nate.

Kat’s break-up with Ethan was so cringy, help me. 

Generally, Kat. S1 kinda portrayed her evolution as “empowering”, which is problematic as she is literally underage. The show never explored the damaging side effects the sex work must have on her views on sex and intimacy. It was hinted at, occasionally, but never became a storyline, which is a real shame I think. Her struggles with maintaining her relationship with Ethan could have been presented under that light. It really wouldn’t have been difficult.

So many of Rue’s actions didn’t have repercussions. All the things she damaged in E5, the money she owned Laurie ... But well, I hope this comes up in S3 again.

I think it’s sad that the themes of Jules’ solo episode weren’t explored more, her relationship to femininity and such. Again, only hinted at, but Jules wasn’t as fleshed out in S2 anymore.

Am I the only one who didn’t think it was okay that Lexi performed her play at the school? Let me explain. So, the way her play was, there would have been a time and a place for it to be okay. Some years in the future, when most of the at the time on-going conflicts between the people portayed are resolved, on any stage that is not the one in their High School. But performing an autofictional play with literally no changes except for the names in front of an audience full of people portayed without their consent while the conflicts are still present? Like, she literally included the carousel scene with Cassie. I, too, would have felt so mocked, even if the majority of the audience didn’t know it was about me. I get that it was about “Lexi taking action” or whatever, but it felt impious to me. Also, she didn’t really do much with the story in terms of creative processing, it’s just like her diary. At least her Mom had fun and it helped Rue. But I don’t think she deserves to be treated like a saint for bringing this play to the stage and into the story.

Some visualisations of drug use reminded me of my all time favourite series “Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo”. I’ve seen articles comparing the two before and I can agree, in a good way.

Yes :)

I think that Rue would be afraid to approach you simply knowing that you're Maddy's sister. It's safe to say that she held a certain respect based in fear for the brunette and she didn't know you well enough to make her own opinion of you.

Rue just made the simple assumption that, because you were a Perez, that you held a certain attitude and snarkiness that your sister did. Which makes complete sense.

But you weren't. You were nothing like Maddy and you always believed that if people gave you a chance, they'd learn that you're definitely the nicer one of the sisters.

You also always thought that if Rue gave you a chance, she'd love you just as much as you loved her.

You watched Rue from afar for a while, listening in, observing, watching the rollercoaster of events that occurred between her dad dying, the funeral, high school, graduation.

You'd listen to the stories that Maddy would tell, the trouble that Rue would get herself into, rehab, drugs, relationships; everything.

By the time that Rue got sober and you and her grew closer, you'd fall even more in love with her and want nothing more than to be with her.

But you'd have no idea how to even tell her.

Maddy picked up on your feelings for one of her best friends quick, a smug smile on her lips at your nervous spluttering of words whenever you'd try to voice how you felt.

Maddy would take on this role of playing match maker, immediately wanting to get the two of you together so you both could get over the nerves and just be happy.

Knowing both of you so well, Maddy spent years listening to Rue talk about you even when she was with Jules and in rehab. Maddy just wanted to gently push the two of you a bit further, hoping that you'd both take the hint.

Eventually you would and you'd go out on a first date and the two of you would just know that this was right. After all the fuck up's, the lies, the drama throughout the years, the other relationships; it was so worth it.
