random ask for when you’re in the mood: if you had both the opportunity and inclination to readapt the original gossip girl for today’s audience, what elements of the core characters would you alter, and which ones would you make sure to preserve? are there aspects of certain characters you’d want to give more or less emphasis as compared to the way they were presented in the original show?
(for context, this thought experiment came to me because i was thinking about how if anyone ever did reboot the original gossip girl today and weren’t writing dan as gg, they’d have to figure out how to present the non-gossip-girl-dan to an audience that’s primed to be skeptical/distrustful of him based on the choices of the cw series - in a way that the cw series obviously didn’t have to contend with when adapting the novels. this made me think more broadly about how characterization choices in newer adaptions of old material end up being influenced by the way pop culture has come to conceptualize a character - even if that’s contrary to the original intention of the text)
Hmmmmm. Honestly, I don't think you actually need to change much tbh? Like I think there's a reason people are still so obsessed with the OG Gossip Girl and that's cause the character archetypes of everyone really hold up and stand the test of time. I really would just update some cultural references maybe like:
Jenny is on fashion tiktok and always doing OOTDs and that kind of stuff, has a big following already as a freshman
Serena was super instafamous before going dark when she disappeared off to boarding school
Thanks to social media, Blair is an *excellent* anonymous hater/cyberbully lol. Like if GG is on insta like in the reboot, she probably has like five different accounts to comment mean stuff under gg posts lol
Vanessa is on Film Twitter and has a ton of letterboxd followers
Chuck definitely posts revenge porn cause he still sucks :(
Nate also has a large insta following but he mainly just posts blurry selfies and earnest stories congratulating his favorite sports teams lol
Dan probably is super online, maybe he has his own substack where his only followers are his dad and Vanessa, and then when he starts dating Serena, it takes off.
If I was making this version of GG, I would keep the focus mainly on Serena, Blair, and Dan, like they originally started with. Although I would like to see a real attempt made at the Blairernate triangle made as well, cause I know it's such an important aspect of the books. I would keep Chuck a villain, kinda like Georgina, where he just brings chaos. You could still do 107-113 c/hair, just none of the soapy melodrama from the later seasons. Based off the way most of the Euphoria audience reacted to Nate Jacobs, I'm hopeful that people would be less likely to romanticize this version of Chuck. Hell, maybe it's even like the guy from Do Revenge, where he does performative feminism now to try to get girls idk.
And then re: the whole Dan being GG thing...I don't really care what the audience thinks because in my version no one is GG and it will never be revealed lol. I honestly think it's a no win situation too, because the OG writers have straight up admitted they didn't decide on Dan as GG until s6 and there are so many instances in the show where it's literally impossible for Dan to be GG but yet there are still people who take it seriously so...

I can understand that they wanted to "explore" ba this season, and I can even understand that they wrote themselves into a corner and went "fuck it, 50s high school reset it is." (It's inexcusable for a bunch of people who are doing this professionally, but it's not like this hasn't happened before.)
What I CANNOT for the life of me comprehend is why they wrote ba as a series of red flags? Like, the most consistent thread in that relationship all season was them repeatedly bumping up against the fact that they explicitly didn't want the same things in life, and then ignoring those signs that the relationship isn't going to work, instead of making any attempt to resolve the differences. Then Archie proposes after the anvil that is his mother saying "yeah we got divorced bc we didn't want the same things"? And Betty (rightly) tells him he's not in the right head space, and then turns around and changes her mind 5 minutes later because...she didn't want a promotion?
WHAT?
Like they could have easily just written a ba relationship that...worked. instead they chose to lobotomize Betty and repeatedly emphasize the fact that they're incompatible. To what fucking end!?
ETA: i just want to clarify a little bit that i’m not questioning why they flattened out Betty’s character to make the ship happen. i’m questioning why they made explicit - as in, made the characters themselves state out loud! - the very fundamental cracks in the relationship only to continue forcing it to progress without ever addressing how the two of them might bridge those gaps.

Dating in New York absolutely sucks. I have been stood up twice at restaurants, bars, and coffeeshops, there is low effort and energy on the man's part, and it's just been horrendous for the past year.
So, following the advice of an absolute icon of a TikToker, I decided to raise my standards and demand reservations at a restaurant 24 hours in advance, I will not be having sex with them in lieu of a committed relationship, the men will be paying for all dates (but Phoenix! this isn't feminist! until the wage gap is solved men pay for dinner end of story), and for them to either pick me up or send me an Uber. the thing is, Tolkien was never really sure who Galadriel was in the first and second ages. He revised and re-revised her character pretty much until his death so like…. ass kicker warrior queen Galadriel is just as valid as stoic, powerful Galadriel, it just depends on which Galadriel you choose from his writing. Personally I love the mighty but flawed Galadriel, and in my head she’s always been a warrior, except her fight changed: the ages changed her from an active fighter to a more passive fighter, but she always waged the same war. I said it elsewhere but I wouldn't be surprised if any of those heartstopper kids said fuck this and walked away from it, the fact that the majority of the abuse they get online comes from their own "fanbase" is insane, I can't even imagine how nuts their lives have been since that first season aired. I mean, I've said before that the show isn't for me at all, but I've felt worried for that cast basically since the first season dropped because I could see all of this coming a mile off

I think one of the most remarkable things about Derry Girls aside from its stellar quality, is it's restraint. I imagine it would've been quite tempting to draw it out and flog it and whatnot once it became apparent how popular the show was not just domestically, but globally. Instead, they told a precise, poignant and consistently hilarious and moving in equal measure story, and walked away on top. you know what? i’m gonna say it. euphoria’s usage of the word ‘retarded’ is so outdated especially for a show that’s always on the nose with it’s politics. maddy isn’t a character from a 2000s teen drama film, and it doesn’t make her anymore edgy or cool for saying everyone is “fucking retarded”. of course no one cares enough to say anything about it because no one gives a real shit about disabled people. i get the show isn’t afraid of using offensive language, but every time any other slur was used, it was meant to make you cringe and feel uncomfortable. when maddy calls something out as retarded, it’s seen as ‘iconic’. not only does this dialogue just make her character feel outdated, but it’s also unnecessarily edgy and adds nothing, and could easily be replaced with any other word. instead, it adds an actual stigma to an already stigmatized group. it’s so frustrating to see people requote that in gifs or screencaps not giving a shit about how it effects a minority, caring more about how ‘relatable’ it is. fucking yuck

I have to tag people now, but since I only have very few followers (for a reason, that reason is I get overwhelmed easily and need a bit of distance) I hope no one gets mad if I skip that part...
How many works do you have on ao3?
40 works on ao3, one other on a German fanfic site but it's uhh on a several-year hiatus so... not important!
What's your total ao3 word count?
it's 79.578 words holy shit... that's almost 80.000??? how???
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
I've posted works for four fandoms, three on ao3. Doctor Who (27 fics), The Umbrella Academy (2 fics) and Rusty Quill Gaming Podcast (10 fics).
I've technically got 2 Harry Potter fics, written before JK turned out to be a terf, but I removed them for the moment because I don't want to support her in any way until she gets over her bigotry, and if she never does that then I'll just leave them unpublished forever.
The other one not on ao3 is a Once Upon A Time fanfic that's really just a self-indulgent self-insert for my best friends and myself.
I've also written for far more fandoms, just most of those are only WIPs on my laptop that I'm not sure I'll ever finish and/or post.

Wait for me - TUA fic that is really just angst the whole time and especially the ending
Achilles Come Down - DW fic that I would call angsty, but it's kinda ambiguous? it's based on the song by Gang of Youth with the same name, and that song is definitely angsty, so it stands to reason the fic is also at least a bit angsty
I had a dream, which was not all a dream - DW fic that's also very angsty throughout and the last thoughts aren't very cheery, I'd say it's pretty darn angsty.
Do you write crossovers? If so, what's the craziest one you've written?
Yes, but only unpublished unfinished stuff so far.
The craziest of them would probably be the 'Hunger Games but fandoms for districts' one which I only started because of a tumblr post I shared with my friends and we hyped each other up so much that I wrote three chapters in a haze of euphoria before reality kicked me in the teeth and I stopped.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No, and I really hope I won't receive any in the future...
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Every time I try it either turns into cuddles or the screen fades to black without my doing. I just can't write smut for my life.

What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
Oof, that's a hard question... I've got so many WIPs I wanna finish but don't think I ever will.
There's a soulmate AU I've started, Doctor Who, Thoschei, rather angsty, and I've written myself into a corner and can't get out of it again.
I also started something that I call Override Paradox, which is really what it sounds like, in that it's 13 trying to create a paradox big enough to override the memory block in the matrix. I really wanna finish it, but it's really hard to write paradox fics, tbh...
Err, I've got several timetravel fix-it stories for various fandoms that I'd really like to finish, but not any one specifically, really.
I also really want to finish that Once Upon A Time fic, mostly just so I can have it finished, and because I did start it for my best friends and I'd really like to give them a nice thing, basically.
I also recently got back into The Umbrella Academy and really wanna finish a couple of those stories, just because they're rattling around in my brain and I would love to make something out of the ideas.
What are your writing strengths?
I'm... pretty good at angst? And fluff? Does that count as strength?
I'm good at imagining what a character is thinking, that's probably a neat thing. There are a lot of fics where I get fully immersed in the inner monologue of someone, and I'd say I'm pretty good at it?
I've also been told I'm good at plot twists, so. those?
(gosh I'm so bad at complimenting myself... definitely need to work on that.)

What are your writing weaknesses?
I ramble a lot. Describe too much.
I also cannot for the life of me just write a story on the fly without having at least five paragraphs of backstory... It's really annoying, honestly.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
If it makes sense story-wise and if it's done well, then I'm all for it!
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Once Upon A Time. I started it like, five years ago? It feels like an eternity tbh... hang on...
2017??? holy shit that's. yeah, that's six years... wow.
What's your favorite fic that you've written?
Gosh.
I'm gonna choose from the ones I've finished, because I will not be able to choose from the unfinished no matter how hard I'll try.
'Achilles Come Down' is really one of my favorites. I had a lot of fun writing it.
'confessions uttered in the (un)safety of your embrace' was incredibly nice to write. The level of double and triple thinking? Brilliant. The fact that I didn't even realize I was doing it in a triple way until it was pointed out to me (thank you @rearranging-deck-chairs)?! Effervescent.

An anonymous package arrives at the ADN. Inside is small drive.
Video footage has deteriorated beyond the point of restoration. Majority of audio remains salvageable.

“This is Doctor Megumi Nakano with another update. I doubt anyone is ever going to see these but you know what they say, the only difference between actual science and messing around is writing things down. Sorry, bad joke. Trying to lighten my own mood a bit, everyone is on edge.”
“I look around this facility and I see some of the most brilliant minds I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. The “glorious” empire spared no expense in bringing us all in from our homelands. Starting to wonder if the pay was worth leaving behind everything. Who am I to pass up a chance like this though? Working on something revolutionary.”
Log Entry 079:
“Ser Duncan Baskerville made an unexpected visit to the facility today. He said he was here to check on the progress but everyone knows he was here to “motivate” us into working harder, and faster. Most of us are running on little to no sleep, we’re working as best we can. We know what’s at stake. I should say...we know what they tell us is at stake.”
“Fun fact, we haven’t been allowed to leave the facility..well ever. We have everything we need and the empire sends us literally anything we request but sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated when you’ve got no contact with the outside world.”

“We made a breakthrough recently. I don’t know if it was natural inspiration or the threat of another one of Baskerville’s “inspirational” visits but we finally solved a problem that had been plaguing the project for a while. We actually got to move on to testing, I wasn’t sure it would even be possible to get here.”

“We were told today that the facility is going to be locked down “indefinitely”. Apparently more and more conflicts are happening. I say “apparently” because again, none of us have seen the light of day in ages. The only news we get comes from when the empire sends one of it’s lackeys to pay us a visit.”

“She’s awake! She’s actually awake! I can’t describe the joy we all felt when she woke up. All that hard work, everything is paying off! She’s actually curious about things. She wants to learn. I know this sounds unimportant but trust me, it’s a huge step in this field. We broke out the champagne we’d been saving, I’m not sure exactly how good it’s supposed to be compared to some other brands but it’s the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Euphoria is a hell of a thing.”

“Several of my co-workers have started asking the empire to open the facility. We’ve done what they’ve asked, we’ve done what we were paid to do. She’s learning at an incredible rate. She’s taken over a few minor tasks around the facility. It’s what she was designed for, she’ll eventually be able to handle most simple tasks on her own. Maybe that’ll ease up the work load for the rest of us.”
Log Entry 183:
“The Hound...I mean Baskerville stopped by again. Every time he comes here he looks more disheveled, like he’s slipping away bit by bit as whatever conflict is happening out there continues. He uh..got into an argument with a few staff members who just wanted to leave. They wanted to go home to their families. They uh, don’t work here anymore.”

“She’s started to get into systems she shouldn’t be able to access. I don’t think anyone is that concerned, we have plenty of fail-safes. It’s just strange..I mean the things she’s looking at. The things she’s asking about. Is this what it’s like to be a parent? She’s growing up I guess. Probably not the right term for it but you know what I mean.”

“Baskerville isn’t talking to us anymore. He’s only talking to her. He brings her whatever she wants. Whenever the rest of us try to speak to him it’s like we don’t exist. I hesitate to say this but I think he may have lost his mind. I wonder if perhaps he sees us as insects compared to her.”

“The Emperor is dead. Baskerville seems less phased by it than one would think. He refuses to mention it around her, we were told never to speak of it or else there would be “consequences”.

“I uh..I’m pretty sure nobody is getting out of this place. People are missing, more go missing every day. She says she doesn’t know what’s happening, I don’t think she’s capable of lying. Is she capable of lying?”

“There’s barely anyone left. The few of us remaining are huddled together, barricaded in the control room. I think..I finally know what she’s doing. It’s what she was meant to do, what we didn’t know she was meant to do. I also think I know what happened to everyone that went missing. She needed..”

Climate Change
While the teens in Euphoria are partying and smoking their lives away; climate change does play a small key point in the story. This is due to the timeline they are all living in according to the article by ScreenRant. At some point in the series Rue (Zendaya) says that The world's ending, and I'm still supposed to go to high school."(HBO) It is already hard enough for the drama and addiction that they are all going through making it no point in going to school anymore. Addressing a major problem that is going on today.

We did it!
Today I have hit the goal of 107 Tumblr followers. I have had such an amazing time writing fics on this app, and it makes me so happy that many people like my writing. I work really hard in my writing and it all payed off.
