15 Days of Freyja Devotion
Tumblr media
Day 3: Symbols and Attributes
Some of Freyja's Symbols are:
Cats. She is said to ride in a chariot pulled by cats, but these wouldn't have been domesticated housecats. To Freyja's earliest worshipers, cats were wild animals and fierce predators that could pose a serious threat. However, many modern worshipers associate Freyja with housecats as well -- myself included.
Boar. Both Freyja and her brother Freyr are associated with boar. Freyja rides a boar named Hildisvini ("battle swine"). Freyja may be associated with pigs more generally, since one of her names is Syr, "sow."
Falcons. Freyja has a cloak made of falcon feathers that gives the one wearing it the ability to change shape and fly. I personally associate Freyja with falcons and hawks.
Gold. "Gold" is used to describe the Aesir and the things associated with them in the Poetic Edda, but Freyja especially is associated with gold. Gold is sometimes called "Freyja's tears" as a kenning.
Amber is also associated with Freyja, possibly because of a shared connection to the ocean (amber sometimes washes up on the shore in Scandinavia).
The distaff and other spinning tools are associated with Freyja and with the goddess Frigg. Spinning was a very important part of Norse womanhood, and on one level, the distaff probably just shows that Freyja is a goddess of women. On the other hand, there seems to be some sort of connection between spinning and magic in Norse culture, so this may also represent Freyja as a goddess of magic.
The seidr staff is also associated with Freyja. Seidr staves weren't literally distaves, but they did look similar and some scholars argue that seidr staves were intentionally made to resemble spinning staves. Whatever the case, both types of staff are associated with Freyja.
Apples are associated with Freyja, and in Swedish folk practices people left some ripe apples in the trees as an offering to her.
Maidenhair, Adiantum capillus-veneris, was called "Freyja's Hair" in Iceland.
Common milkwort, Polygala vulgaris, was originally also called "Freyja's Hair" in Scandinavia but was renamed after the Virgin Mary during the Conversion period.
Orchids were also associated with Freyja before the conversion. While this was specifically a Northern European species of orchid, I personally associate all orchid flowers with her.
Rye is connected to Freyja in Sweden, where Freyja is said to oversee the ripening of rye.
Sheet lightning is said to be a symbol of Freyja's rage in Sweden.
The constellation we call Orion's Belt was called "Freyja's Distaff" or "Frigg's Distaff" in Sweden.

man i love that european wildcats look just like housecats. they are incredibly hostile to humans. imagine taking in what you think is an adorable stray and it hates you more than anything you've ever met in your life.

The grasslands of Europe are a collection of areas with sparse tree cover spanning the interiors of the Iberian, Italian, Balkan and Anatolic peninsulas in the south and the plains north of the Black and Caspian Sea in the north, plus a dozen pockets between the forests of central and western Europe.
Tumblr media
As the name implies they’re dominated by low and high grasses, along with the occasional bushes and the many wildflower species. Trees are pretty sparsely distributed, and the most successful family here are the Querceae, the descendants of oaks and chestnuts.
The most common browsers are the Elepharrhinidae family, a group descended from modern wild boars. They’ve developed a proboscis from their snout and longer tusks. They aren’t strict browsers and up to half of their diet can be grass.
An another heavy-set clade are the Moschystricidae, strict grazers that evolved from Italian and north-african porcupines, that lost most of their quills, except for a mane around their necks and on their tail, in order to scare off and harm predators and rivals
The faster and lighter herbivores are the descendants of the running hares that evolved in the earliest Epigene, like Metalagus, that grew in size and became, in some cases, as tall as 2 metres, but most species average around 1,50 metres.
Tumblr media
Mound building termites expanded from Africa into south-western Europe, opening the doors to a kind of animal Europe had been devoid of for millions of years: myrmecophages. An unlikely candidate took on this role, the hedgehog, that developed long jaws, a long sticky tongue, big sharp claws and knuckle walking, resembling a placental echidna. With their pointy quills and massive claws, even though they’re not really fast or agile, they’re an unlikely prey to the many predators of the grasslands, and are used as protection by similar sized critters, like phasianids and the still hopping rabbits.
Canids survived through the mass extinction, and thanks to their adaptations were able to quickly radiate into various forms. The main groups of the european grasslands are the Thocyon genus, pack hunters that exhaust their prey to kill it, and the Cinocyon genus, cheetah-like canids that are some of then planet’s fastest animals, both descended from the golden jackal.
Tumblr media
(She’s based off my friend’s cat)
The apex predator of these areas, tho, is the Fellimus alexandrae, a big ambush predator capable of reaching 200 kg, that evolved from European wildcats, with around 10-20% of their ancestry coming from housecats. The genus is widespread across Eurasia, and this species is represented by three subspecies: the F. alexandrae alexandrae, from Southern Europe, slightly smaller than the other two and with shorter fur; the F. alexandrae auduli, from the pockets of grassland in Central Europe; and the F. alexandrae aikoja, from the northeastern plains and into Central Asia.

Y'all, I just wanted to make you look at my perfect baby boy today. :)
[image ID: six pictures of a striped European housecat. The first one shows him lying curled up into a ball, the second one shows him sitting and looking sleepily at the viewer. In the third picture he is lying on op's lap, half of his face pressed against the op's stomach. In the fourth one he is lying on a blue couch, his white paws stretched towars the camera showing off his pink toe beans. The fith picture shows just his head nuzzled into a teal coloured blanket, asleep while a crochet piece is being worked on in the foreground. In the last picture he is sleeping curled up on the blue couch again, all paws stacked upon each other. End ID.]

OC ask time :3
Your characters have the opportunity to gain the power to speak to one species of animal. Once they pick their species, it's permanent and cannot be changed latter. (Sub species still work, but the further away from the origin species, the harder they are to understand. If someone picked a Transvaal lion, they'd be able to communicate with all lion species well enough, but speaking to a housecat still in the Felidae family would have some significant language barriers.) Who would use the power immediately? Who would not care and completely forget about it? Who would jokingly pick some random animal then immediately regret it?
Ooooh this one's really cool!!! Thank you so much!
Rae: Thinks it's a very cool power, but struggles to pick out what animal since she travels so much (ideally she'd pick something either domesticated or cosmopolitan). Ends up picking a European rabbit - native to Europe, obviously, but introduced as an invasive species to a lot of countries. She doesn't end up using the power as much as she'd hope, but it's nice to have the resource available to her.
Robin: Peter jokingly suggests that she pick an actual American robin, just for the irony of it, but she can't think of anything better so she goes with it. It's a strange balance of useful and annoying. On the one hand, they're everywhere. On the other hand, they're everywhere.
Madison: Domesticated dogs. Already a very useful power with how widespread dogs are, but also allows her to link to wolves, coyotes, and other related canids as needed. Perfect for an X-Man who needs to get information in a populated area, and perfect for a wilderness survivalist who needs to let the nearby wolves know that she's not encroaching on their territory and she'll be gone the next morning.
Ophelia: Would spend so much time debating the merits of one animal over another, considering the native and invasive species of where she lives versus just picking a domesticated animal that would be commonplace anywhere, the amount of closely-related species, etc... that she eventually gets absorbed into another project without ever actually picking an animal
Jasper: Also picks domesticated dogs, but with the idea that that would be a useful skill in nursing - being able to communicate directly with alert dogs, seeing eye dogs, therapy dogs, or any other service dog they might encounter.
Kestrel: Can already communicate with animals by transforming into them as needed - would completely forget about this power since it's so similar to the one they already have.
Katherine: Housecats. She's most closely linked to Bastet out of all the gods, so it's just the most practical for her. Plus, they're widespread
Quinn: Thinks on this for a while, then says... human. Is this allowed? Probably not. She argues that humans are technically still animals, and she already can't communicate with most of them - there's 7 billion people on Earth, so her understanding English is the equivalent to knowing that a cat arching its back is a warning, in the grand scheme of things. In the end, this gives her the ability of rudimentary conversation in any language on Earth, should she ever need it. Leave it to Quinn to beeline towards the first loophole she can find.
Eris: Received this power hundreds of years back, and ended up picking a Barbary lion for their animal - for one thing, they weren't expecting to move very far outside Northern Africa, since travel was far from streamlined at that point... and today they're an extinct species at that. Not the most useful power in the world. Whoops.
Nikoletta: Some kind of pest animal - they're everywhere, which makes them great for espionage and learning secrets. Either she'd go with pigeons, or she'd take a page out of Cleo's book and communicate with rats.

What Is Anarkata?
“Anarkata” emerges as a response to the political alienation that has been experienced by Black anarcho adjacent leftists who reject both the whiteness of traditional anarchism and the authoritarianism of some forms of Black nationalism.
21st century “Black Anarchism” as a concept has recently gained more popularity as the works of Lucy Parsons, Lorenzo Kom’boa Ervin, and Kuwasi Balagoon, have become more widely disseminated on the internet (and especially with the publication of the ‘Black Anarchism Reader’). This increased attention and visibility has provided a degree of validation to those of us who are Black radicals that share a common belief in the need for decolonization and self-determination for Afrika and the Diaspora, but who reject an uncritical investment in hierarchy, centralization, and the State as the ways to achieve international Black liberation.
We find Black Anarchism as a political tendency particularly attractive because of its flexibility— how it draws from a number of revolutionary frameworks—Black Marxism, Maoism, Pan Afrikanism, Black feminism, Queer liberation—which makes it not just opposed to the Western and capitalist forces oppressing Black people, but also the transmisic, heterosexist, misogynistic, disablist, and human-centered forces working against us as well. Most of us in “anarchic” Black radical movements, however, find ourselves overlooked, and our politics get confused and dismissed as synonymous with classical, European Anarchism—which is itself often misunderstood by the non-anarchic world as largely an aesthetic and utopian movement, perhaps where people in bandannas smash windows or advocate an individualist liberty, a naive pacifism, or simply uncoordinated destruction and “chaos.” It is within this milieu—of the increased popularity and relevance of anarchism to Black revolution, and the confusing or elusive nature of this relevance in the public consciousness due to anarchist mythology—that some of us decided we should develop our own name, to help demonstrate that we locate our anarchic radicalism in our own history as Afrikan/Black people.
The struggle for Black self-determination has often articulated itself through self-naming, whether naming independent parties or religious institutions or choosing non-Anglo/non-European names. Inspired by that tradition of self-naming, it was suggested we could use the term ‘Anarkata,’ to describe ourselves for ourselves within the revolutionary canon. Short for ‘anarchic akata,’ the term is to be a reclamation of the Yoruba word for ‘housecat’ or ‘wild animal’ (we thank Black Youth Project for getting us thinking about this) that has been used to describe Afrikans displaced in Amerikkka. Reclaiming a term that has been on some accounts regarded as a slur and on other accounts is said to be a way to conflate all Black/Afrikan folk with the Black Panther Party was important here. Anarkata means for us that first and foremost the prefix “anarch-“ (meaning ‘without unjust hierarchy’ or ‘without rulers’) would be grounded in the political struggle of ‘Blackness’ as a Pan-Afrikan (and Afrikan Diasporic) set of experiences and revolutionary histories (anarch-akata) and not just in some universalized, unspecified vision about absence of rule (anarch-ist). We would thus be defining domination, subjugation, exploitation and resistance to them in light of Black/Afrikan thought and struggle.
In this way, to be Anarkata is akin to something Ashanti Alston once said, where our Blackness is “…not so much as an ethnic category but… an oppositional force or touchstone for looking at situations differently. Black culture has always been oppositional and is all about finding ways to creatively resist oppression. So, when I speak of a Black anarchism, it is not so tied to the color of my skin but who I am as a person, as someone who can resist, who can see differently when I am stuck, and thus live differently.” Anarkata politics seek to consolidate that flexible culture of Black oppositionalism into a consciously revolutionary, ethical and logical form—especially in response to 21st century problems facing Black/Afrikan people globally such as climate change, environmental racism and disablement, neocolonialism, neofascism, Zionism, settler colonialism, militarized policing, mass incarceration, etc. It is this process of synthesis, a synthesis of Black radical oppositionalities along the lines of a Black nonhierarchical critique (Anarkata synthesis), that is characteristic of the Anarkata approach to Black liberation.
The following document is not to be a founding document for one particular organization but is intended to be a jumping off point for anarchic Black radicals to cohere our diverse thoughts together. The authors have not written this to speak for all things in anarchic Black revolution, but we write this as an invitation to us all to put our heads and minds together. We hope that from this document a set of conversations and relationships can spring by which Anarkatas can then more effectively propagandize and produce a wave of literature that reflects even more of our perspectives. We envision that what’s proffered here get taken up, dissected, rewritten, expanded upon, and challenged beyond here—that this be a living document. We hope that it is used to better inform and enrich the local Black anarchist work already taking place. Zines, videos, memes, lexicons, podcasts, articles— we hope to see all of this and more generated around this document so that the growing energy for and interest in anarchic Black radical politics can be intensified and pushed further. Our hope is that in coming together as Anarkatas we can then work more cohesively to make our traditions, politics, praxes, and freedom visions accessible to everyone.

We have daemons for days
Welcome to the side blog of @korya-elana! This space is specifically to talk about our varied experiences with daemonism!
Note: Not demons in any form. Think His Dark Materials.
As a DID System of 30+, our experiences with daemonism are highly varied and because it's such a massively important part of our existence and daily life, we wanted to provide resources, personal experiences and general awareness.
List of relevant alters and their daemons below the links!
Alters and their daemons! Note, not every alter has a daemon in our System and not every alter/daemon is very well known. Em (They/Them): -Prothomalion (Thom, He/Him): Settled yellow-throated marten. Eudaimon. Snarky and sarcastic -Elethanye (Ani, She/Her): Unsettled, usually a silken windhound. Sweet as honey. Mental construct. Kay (He/Him): -Kekani (Kiki, She/Her): Settled European Hare. Practical, no-nonsense. We used to see her pop up and check on us occasionally when Kay was the Gatekeeper.
Alice (She/Her): -Z (He/Him). Settled luna moth. Alice won't tell anyone his full name, apparently that's private. We don't know much about him, he's very quiet.
Ashley (She/Her): -Azekia (Ziki, She/Her): Settled(?) ball python. Ziki's never shifted form before per Ashley, but they're both wanting to get into form-finding and figure out what their actual settled form is. She's sweet and practical
"Auntie" (She/Her): -Xxyss (pronounced Chiss maybe? He/Him): I don't know "Auntie" very well. It's hard to really write down or pronounce her golden eagle daemon's name, so this is more guesswork than anything else tbh.
Jasper (They/Them): -???: Red-ruffed lemur. Don't know much about her, she sticks pretty close to Jasper
Kell (He/Him): -Isadora (She/Her): Jaguarundi. Kell took awhile to name her and start interacting with her but it's been beautiful to see their relationship grow as he struggles with the loss of his source.
Eris (She/Her): -???: Purple-toned leopard gecko. I think it's a he?
Sparrow (She/Her): -??? Some kind of male griffin the size of a large housecat
System Daemon: -Demippos (He/Him, referred to by our youngest as Meepo): Melanistic leopard. Demippos is sort of an introject, he entered our System through a mental health app focused on daemons and he was what we got after the quiz. He usually shows up if one of us is needing extra support or serves as daemon to those who don't have one. He likes to sleep with the youngest two.

I often think about the things lost in history because no one bothered to write them down or they didn't have the means then to write them down.
Things like who was the first person to bring domesticated cats to North America and how did the indigenous population react to them?
Was it the English, the Spanish, the French or the Dutch? Was it an even older time with the Norse?
What type of cat was it? A calico? A tabby? A gray one or an orange one? Or maybe it was a tuxedo cat? Short haired? Long haired? Did it have a little collar on.
It was most likely a ship's cat. A cat the the crew kept on board to take care of any on board mouse problem. A working cat rather than a pure pet.
How did the Native American population first react to seeing it? The cats in North America are of the cougar and bobcat variety. Much bigger than a common housecat. And you certainly wouldn't go around and petting those cats. They would not be familiar at all with the domestic cat.
Did they like the cat? Were they amused by its purr? Or were they like, "Nope. A cat is a cat is a cat. We don't mess with bobcats and we won't mess that cat either."
I like to think that they fell in love with the cat. So much so that it became a bargaining tool for the Europeans. "Yes, we will talk with you and your leaders but only if you bring the cat with you..."
And if the cat was popular, I wonder if kittens were ever exchanged as gifts to the Native population. What was the cultural exchange and influence of cats?
