Alone
Summary: Roman keeps digging until he reaches a breaking point.  Presumed Dead Creativitwins AU.
All out battles were not common in this war.  Most fighting was done through subterfuge or capture, usually in the direction of hurting Evelon.  But lately it looked like things might be heading towards an actual battle.  There had already been a couple small scuffles over No Man’s Land as each side tried to advance.  It wasn’t common, which was troubling.
What was far more common was working with injuries, at least to Roman.
It wasn’t that he expected time off to rest his back, but he hadn’t expected it to hurt quite so much.  Going to talk with Remus despite being hurt clearly had been a terrible idea for multiple reasons.
Speaking of which.
“Roman,” Patton said, and Roman clenched his fists around his blanket.
“I’m trying to nap,” he said, trying not to sound cold.  “I have to work in a half hour, can you leave me please?”
“Roman, please, we only want to talk for a minute,” Logan said.
Roman grit his teeth and pushed himself up with a wince, turning to face them.  “What?”
“Roman, we can tell something is bothering you,” Patton said, reaching worriedly for him.  “We just want to know what’s wrong.”
“Uh, gee, my back kinda hurts,” Roman said, raising an eyebrow.
“Not that,” Logan said.  “Something else.”
Roman narrowed his eyes.  They didn’t exactly sound guilty.  And yes, it was possible that’s because they didn’t know why Roman had been hurt.  Or maybe they just didn’t care.
Either way, Roman reached out and grabbed both their hands.  You lied to me.
Both of them now looked confused.
We did? Patton squeezed back.  When?
Remus told me you’re leaving.
Both of their eyes widened, and then they moved forward and sat on the bed next to him.
Not without you, Roman.  Logan squeezed his hand firmly, like he really wanted it to get across.
How sweet.
No, you’re just keeping it from me because you think I’m too stupid to decide whether or not to go.
Roman, Patton said, giving him a look.  That’s not true.
Then why didn’t you tell me?
You weren’t ready to know, Logan said.  We didn’t want to pressure you.
So you were just waiting for me to agree with you without even explaining your position.  As if it was inevitable.  I guess I’m just slow to get with the program.
Roman, you are misreading the situation, Logan said.
Oh, because I can’t trust my own judgment, right?
That is most certainly not what I meant.
You made me feel like I can’t trust you, Roman said.  And if I can’t trust you, I can’t trust anybody.
Roman, Patton said.  I’m sorry we didn’t tell you.  It’s clear now that we should have.  But I promise promise promise we won’t leave without you.
Roman turned an icy stare on Patton.  Yes you will.
No, Roman—
You will or I will go to our superiors right now and tell them everything.
Patton’s eyes widened.  “Roman!” he said out loud.
Roman, don’t do that, Logan said.  We will not leave you.  We do not want to leave you.  We will stay here as long as you need.
I don’t want to leave.
Logan looked torn.
See, you’re still expecting me to change my mind.
Roman—
Get out.  It’s not safe for you if you’ve already decided to leave.
Patton cupped the side of Roman’s face, shaking his head.
Roman leaned away.  Get out by tomorrow or I’m telling them everything.  They already asked, and I’d rather not have a repeat of that.
Patton’s gaze turned confused.
Logan looked towards Roman’s back, and his eyes widened.  He reached out for him, but Roman leaned back, pulling both his hands away this time and crossing his arms firmly.  He leaned further away when Patton reached for his hands.
Patton started tapping something on his arm, but Roman smacked his hand away.  Desperate tears welled in Patton’s eyes, but when he tried again, Roman stood up.  He had to get to work soon anyway.
“Roman—” Logan said weakly aloud, but Roman was already storming away.
The following day Maybe-Logan and Maybe-Patton were gone.
Roman might have slightly underestimated how terrifying things would be on his own.  Maybe-Patton and Maybe-Logan had been like his only lifevests in a very dangerous sea.  They hadn’t given him solid ground, but they’d kept his head above water.  They’d all kept each other’s heads above water.  That’s what they did.  But now they weren’t here, and Roman was… struggling, to put it lightly.
It was hard to tell what was real.  Was he actually hungry because they’d taken his breakfast, or was he just imagining the feeling?  Was his back actually still hurting, or was he just being dramatic?  Had they actually hit him again yesterday, or was his supervisor right when he gave Roman a confused look and said that hadn’t happened?
Roman was in pain, exhausted, and questioning his perceptions of all of it.  It didn’t take him very long to regret making Maybe-Patton and Maybe-Logan leave.  But it was too late to take it back now, and it’s not like they could come back.  Besides, his supervisor said there had never been people here named Patton or Logan, so maybe Roman was just crazy probably.
What he was sure of, however, was that they were amping up for a battle.  The superiors told him enough times and never contradicted themselves, so clearly they wanted them all to get ready for it.  Roman wasn’t stupid enough to think that meant he got a break while his back healed.  Sometimes he went outside, since it was getting colder and that almost felt like putting ice on his back, but he didn’t want to overdo that.  Stay long enough and the rest of him might get too cold.
He wasn’t sure exactly how long it was going to be before the battle, but he got a feeling his superiors actually weren’t sure either, since the tension around was constant nowadays.  It was exhausting in its own way, and before long Roman was too tired to think most of the time.  His days involved waking up exhausted, dragging one foot in front of the other towards whatever he’d just been told to do, shoving food in his mouth for any amount of energy it could give him, and dragging himself back to bed and passing out, rinse and repeat.  If something in his day shifted, Roman honestly wasn’t sure he could handle it.
So when he was put in the back of a van along with a bunch of other soldiers and they were all driven off, Roman couldn’t think past leaning his head back against the side of the van and trying not to fall asleep.  He knew what phasing in and out of consciousness felt like well enough to know that it wasn’t working.
When the van stopped, Roman jerked his head up and tried to blink himself into coherence.  That didn’t work either, so Roman bit down on his lip hard enough that the pain at least got his ears functioning.
“…job is to take as many of their people out as possible.  We don’t know how they knew this was here, but we’re going to make them regret it,” the supervisor near the doors was saying.
Something clicked in Roman’s brain enough for his eyes to widen.  Had they been driving towards a battle?  Was he about to try and fight when he could barely stand?
Before he could try and adjust to that fact, the doors were thrown open and Roman was shuffled outside along with the people around him.
The cold air was enough of a shock to his system to at least wake him up, and then Roman turned around and the people who were now throwing themselves at each other did some of the rest.  Everyone from Vitalen had an insignia on his chest, and everyone from Evelon looked like they were wearing thrown-together outfits.  They didn’t have a van of recruitments showing up.
Roman couldn’t breathe.  The air was too cold and his back was aching from the beating he’d imagined yesterday and his legs were shaking under him and everyone else around him was already running towards the battle and someone was shoving him after them right on the part of his back that hurt the most and Roman could not do this today, he was going down.
Surprisingly, hitting the ground didn’t hurt as much as he’d thought it would.  Or maybe he was just numb.
Someone stepped on his hand.  Someone else kicked him in the side.  Roman didn’t have the strength to scream.  Someone else was screaming, though.  A bunch of people were screaming, actually, but this one was closest.
“Get up you lazy piece of—” that screaming cut off very suddenly, and then Roman was suddenly looking at his supervisor on the ground next to him, out cold with blood on the back of his head that couldn’t be good.
Well, whoever just did that to him was probably about to do the same to Roman, then.  It’s fine.  He’d had a shitty run.  At least if he was dead they couldn’t make him do anything anymore.
Instead, however, Roman was scooped up off the ground and thrown over someone’s shoulders in a fireman’s carry.  Roman wasn’t quite sure why that is, but it definitely didn’t hurt his back as much as princess style would have, so that was nice at least.
Roman still wasn’t sure if he was going to make it much longer without passing out, though.
Luckily, before that happened, the person who was carrying him got them both to an alleyway and set Roman down gently against the wall, keeping his back away from it while still angling him so Roman didn’t have to hold himself up.  He was just beginning to wonder how this person knew so much about where Roman was injured when Remus’ face swam into view.
“Roman?  Roman, stay with me!  Do you know where you are?”
“No, I don’t want to,” Roman mumbled just before passing out.
He woke up laying in a different alleyway, a little less delirious but no less exhausted.  He groaned, trying to muster the strength to move at all, but surprisingly he was laying on something soft, and that made it very tempting to not do that.  The soft thing felt suspiciously like a mattress, but that couldn’t be the case.
“Roman?  Roman!”
Roman whined and turned to bury his head in the soft thing.  Didn’t this person know he was trying to sleep?
“Roman, please, I need to know you aren’t dying,” the person begged, and they sounded so scared that Roman groaned again, but forced his eyes open.
Remus was hovering right next to him, tears welling in his eyes.  Roman made a small concerned noise and dragged his arm up to wipe at them.  “Don’ cry.”
“Roman,” Remus sobbed, and he reached out and wrapped his arms gently around Roman, being careful not to touch his back at all.  It was the gentlest Roman had been treated in weeks, and it was enough to make Roman’s eyes well up too.  He leaned forward and started crying into Remus’ shoulder.
Remus seemed to realize something, though, because he pushed himself back, and Roman watched him physically shove his tears back too, which didn’t look that easy or healthy.
“Is your back still hurt, Ro?” he asked, wiping at his eyes.
“Hmm-mm.  They said I just imagined it because I was being lazy.”
For some reason, that just made Remus’ eyes well up again, but all he did was lean forward and pull Roman’s shirt up.
“Roman, you’re hurt,” he managed.  “You’re bleeding, they hurt you.”
“Yeah?  Sounds like them.”
“I don’t know how bad,” Remus cried, pressing a shaking hand to his mouth.  “I— do you feel like you’re dying?”
“No, no,” Roman murmured, reaching out a hand and weakly grasping Remus’ before his strength ran out and he dropped it back onto the soft thing.  “Just tired.  Just too tired to exist.  But I don’ get to rest.  They need me to do things.  They always need me to do more things.”  Roman pressed his head into the soft thing.  “I don’t want to do any more things, Remus,” he sobbed.
Remus leaned forward and brushed Roman’s hair away from his forehead.  He didn’t say anything.
“Are you gonna send me back?” Roman asked, dread welling up at the prospect.
“I—” Remus said weakly, looking torn.  Roman pushed his head further into the soft thing and started crying harder.
“Roman,” Remus said.  “Hey, Roman, look at me.”
Roman tried.
“You’re not going to lose me, okay?” Remus said weakly.  “I— I hate them, and I hate what they’re doing to you, and I hate that you want to go back to them, but you’re not going to lose me because of it.  I’m going to be right here, okay?  Whatever you need, I’m always going to be right here.”
Roman took a gasping breath and tried to move his arm, but he just did not have it in him.  “Re,” he said weakly.  “Please don’t send me back.”
Remus went still.  “What?”
“I don’t— I don’t want to do any more things, Remus,” Roman cried.  “I want to be with you, and I want to sleep, and I want to find out if I imagined Patton and Logan or not.  I don’ wanna— I don’ wanna go back.  Please don’t make me, please, I don’t…” Roman definitely would have kept begging if he had the strength, but he didn’t, and in fact the world was kind of fazing out above him again.
Remus leaned forward to say something in response, but Roman’s eyes slipped shut again before he could hear.

“You’re not alone.”
Tumblr media
It was one of the few evenings where everything was nearly perfect. Evelon sat close to the fire. The hearth was her favorite of drinking spots and there she nestled for the majority of the evening. She watched the other patrons in silence and drifted through the intoxicating buzz she gradually acquired as the night waned. Her stomach was full, the fire was warm, and her buzz was strong. A cigarette, she decided as she licked the vacant canine which the vice typically sat upon, would be the only thing to make the night perfect. But just as she was about to get up to retrieve the tobacco and paper from her pack a familiar figure separated from the lodge's lingering patrons and took her seat beside the Huntress.
Eve flashed Lexi a signature smirk, raising her emptied stein in greeting.
Lexi offered a disquiet smile over the brim of her half-emptied glass before taking a swig. A breath of content followed before she returned her gaze to the Hound Master. "Hope you don't mind the company," she said, "You look a bit lonely over here."
"Always alone," she corrected as reached for her pack set beside her chair, "But never lonely."
An uncomfortable silence unfolded between the two. In that quiet moment, Evelon procured a tin of tobacco and a slip of paper. She tapped out a pinch of herbs, tucked them in paper's fold, and proceeded to carefully roll a fresh cigarette along the arm of the chair. As she licked the vice sealed, she stole a glance at the engineer.
Lexi stared back with set brows, clearly not amused. "You’re not alone,” she frankly stated.
The sentiment struck cold despite the warmth placed behind it. It stole the words from Evelon's lips and left the her lingering on a confused precipice; she'd always been alone. An invisible wall laid between herself and everyone else- an impenetrable wall carved from so much hurt and suffering, sealed with a mortar crafted from the solitary truth that she was no longer human. She'd grown accustomed to the wall and watched loved ones from the other side, always hesitant to cross the border and therefore always alone. In so many ways alone was safer. Alone meant no more pain. Alone meant she'd never again have to feel lonely.
But how could she explain all that to Lexi, or to anyone for that matter? The answer was she couldn't and so she didn't.
Instead, Evelon shook off the melancholy and summoned a winning smile. "I know that," she said, tucking the cigarette between her lips, " S' only bein' witty."
"Anyhow," she added, rising to her feet, "M' gonna have m'self a smoke."

Realizations and Readiness
Summary: Logan and Patton come to a realization about their home.  Presumed Dead Creativitwins AU.
Logan had never fully believed that his home had his best interests in mind.  Or more accurately, there had always been a tiny voice in the back of his head whispering that something was wrong.  That voice was not safe to listen to, and Logan did his best to ignore it whenever he could, but that did not mean it wasn’t there.
Things had changed recently, however.  They had support from people who had quite a bit of influence in Evelon.  And Evelon was losing, but… a large part of Logan was beginning to suspect that if they left, they might have inside knowledge that could tip the scales.
That did not mean that the idea didn’t fill him with dread.  Logan had always relied on cold hard facts to ground himself when things were feeling fuzzy, things that he could prove to himself as true with little effort.
Fact: the sky is blue.
Fact: today is Thursday.
Fact: Patton and Roman loved him very much.
Fact: trying to leave Vitalen was in all likelihood a suicide mission.
What scared Logan with this instance, however, was that his cold hard facts were not stopping him from wanting to leave.  There were parts about Vitalen he’d always despised.  They didn’t let him learn anything new, or say that he wanted to learn anything new.  Any time someone told him something he hadn’t known his first instinct was defensiveness and distrust, and he knew it wasn’t supposed to work like that.  They made him question himself and his judgment, and resort to using obvious facts like the fact that the sky was blue to calm himself down.  They made it so hard to think sometimes.  And Logan wanted to think, he wanted to learn, he wanted to question.
Just not about whether or not he could trust his own memory.
He was quiet for the drive back from Patty’s house.  She was a wonderful woman.  He was glad Roman had once known her, that he got to again.
That didn’t mean that it wasn’t dangerous, what they’d done.  What they were doing.  One misstep and they’d be found out.  They would be screamed at and beaten and then isolated and talked in circles until they agreed that they’d never been screamed at or beaten.
Logan reached for Roman’s hand and started tapping out this week’s lunch menu on the back of it.
Roman squeezed back, giving him a slightly concerned look.  Logan was not often the one who needed to calm himself down.  He was their family’s rock for a reason.
They reached their checkpoint with plenty of time left.  Roman gave Remus a squeezing hug and a thanks, and they made a quick plan to see each other again a week from now.  Then Roman headed out and towards their home, and Logan turned hesitantly to face Remus.
“Okay,” Remus said, giving him a curious look.  “What’s going on?”
Logan opened his mouth.
“Logan!” Roman called from a little ways off.  “You coming?”
Fact: Roman was not ready for this realization.
Logan could tell.
“Another time,” he said to Remus, shifting towards the door.
Remus’ gaze turned slightly concerned.  “Okay,” he said.  “Do you want to… meet sometime?”
Logan bit his lip.  “I am off next Monday.  Roman is not.”
Remus narrowed his eyes.  “Alright,” he said hesitantly.  “I’ll meet you here.”
Logan nodded, and stepped out of the car.
“Logan,” Remus said, and Logan turned around.  “Don’t take this personally, but I’m going to warn you that if you hurt my brother—”
“Never,” Logan said, putting as much conviction in his voice as he could manage.  It seemed to convince Remus, thankfully, because he relaxed and nodded.
“Okay.  See you then,” he said.
Logan nodded back and climbed out, shutting the car door after him and heading off towards Roman, who was tapping his foot impatiently.
Patton had been looking at him all day like he wanted to talk about something.  It was a different look from his “We need to talk” look, meaning Logan hadn’t done anything to make Patton upset or angry.  (It was not a common occurrence, but it was very unpleasant.)
He tried to send Patton back a “I’ll tell you when,” look, but Patton was not as adept at receiving facial communication than giving it, and he wasn’t quite sure it got across.
At dinner, he made sure he sat down next to Patton so he could reach for his hand and talk discreetly.
Is something wrong? he tapped out on the back of Patton’s hand.
I need to talk to you, Patton tapped back.  Can we stay up late tonight?
Of course.  Is everything alright?
Patton hesitated for a moment.  I don’t know.
Logan knew better than to look at Patton, but he squeezed his hand reassuringly and left his hand there, even though the two of them weren’t talking anymore.
As they’d gotten older, they’d slowly gotten more free time after dinner but before lights out, so the three of them ended up heading to their favorite building and finding their way up to the roof.  Roman spent time telling Patton about how things had gone with Patty, and Logan tried not to feel guilty for keeping something from Roman.
He hadn’t meant to, not really, it was just that all of these thoughts couldn’t have come at a worse time and telling Roman what he was thinking could cause quite a few problems.  Patton he wasn’t sure about, but Roman…
Logan glanced over at him.  That didn’t mean that he felt comfortable keeping something from him.  They might have established when they were young that there was a difference between not being ready to share something and lying, but the difference was that Logan was ready to share it.  Roman just wasn’t ready to hear it.  And that situation did not feel good.
“Lo?” Roman called, causing Logan to glance up, pulled out of his thoughts.  “You good?  You seem kinda spacey.”
“Apologies,” Logan said.  “Just lost in thought.”
Roman nodded, and Logan redirected his attention to the conversation they were having.  He could figure out his thoughts later.
It wasn’t long after that when they went home, in order to make it before lights out.  They made their way back to the barracks, and Logan spent some time reading as Patton and Roman talked.  Finally, lights were dimmed, meaning they had five minutes, and Logan put his book away and climbed in bed.
He waited until the lights went out before shifting his attention to Roman and Patton, and even then he waited until Roman started snoring to reach out his hand in the dark towards Patton’s bed.
Patton’s hand was waiting in the space between them, and Logan squeezed it once to let him know he was listening.
But Patton didn’t squeeze back.
Logan squeezed his hand again, curiously, but instead of saying something, Patton’s hand started to shake.
Patton? Logan asked.
Logan, I’m scared, Patton finally squeezed.
That’s alright, Logan responded, even if he didn’t know what Patton was scared about.
I, Patton said, and then nothing else.  Would you get me in trouble?
Of course not, Logan said instantly, beginning to suspect he knew what Patton was thinking about.  Patton, you are family.  You and Roman come before anything else.  He squeezed Patton’s hand more firmly on the “anything” in an attempt to emphasize it.
Patton was still quiet for another minute.
I’m starting to think, Patton said finally, that Vitalen isn’t… he hesitated again.  Good.
I am too, Logan said instantly, and he felt a large amount of tension leave Patton’s hand.
Really?
Yes, Logan said.  I do not think it is a good thing that we find it so hard to be sure of ourselves.  Or that we’re scared of getting hurt.  Or punished, or isolated.  We should…
Logan’s hand was shaking too, in a way he had not expected.  But he wasn’t going to stop now.
We should have more freedoms than we do, he went with, though he suspected there was a lot more to it than that.
Patton’s hand was shaking again too, and he didn’t say anything for another long stretch of time.
Patton?
Oh, Patton said, which is when Logan realized he was further behind him on this realization than he’d thought.
Oh no, I’m sorry, Logan said immediately.  I didn’t mean to—
It’s okay, Patton said.  I think I was just— it’s okay.
I’m sorry, Logan said again anyway.  I did not want to upset you Patton, I’m sorry.
Do you really think this place is that bad? Patton asked.
I… I do, Logan admitted.  I think the people in charge do not care about the people below them.
But then what… what do we do? Patton asked, and his hand was starting to shake again.  I’m scared.
I am too, Logan said, because it would help Patton and it was also pointless to deny it.  But I also have a plan.  I think.  Or the beginnings of one.
What is it?
You’re off on Monday, correct?
“Why does this feel so much scarier than all of the other times we’ve done this?” Patton asked.
“Because it feels more dangerous,” Logan said quietly.  Patton let out a shaky breath and nodded.
They’d planned to meet Remus in the same alley as usual, but Logan was beginning to feel that was not a smart idea.  That maybe they should have tried to choose a different alley, or maybe they should be trying to move the alleyways they met in more regularly.  They were more likely to be caught if they went to the same place.
But at this point the place was decided, and they couldn’t change it now.
Thankfully, Remus was already waiting when they got there, because Logan wasn’t sure how long his nerves would have held out if they had to wait.
“You brought Patton,” Remus said in surprise.
“I did,” Logan said.  “We have something we wanted to talk to you about.”
“Okay,” Remus said, looking a little suspicious.  “Without Roman?”
Patton winced.  They’d both been feeling pretty guilty about that part, but it was dangerous to tell Roman at a point where he wasn’t ready to hear it.
“Roman,” Logan said hesitantly.  “Roman disagrees with us on this issue.”
Remus narrowed his eyes further.  “What issue?”
“Whether or not we should leave,” Patton said quietly.
Remus’ eyes widened all the way open again.  “You want to leave?”
“We aren’t safe with everything we’ve been doing,” Logan said.  “And… I do not particularly like life in Vitalen.  I wanted to ask you if you had a place we could go, should we choose to.”
“You’d stay with us,” Remus said immediately, as if that was obvious.  “But what do you mean ‘should you choose to?’”
“Well, we’re not leaving without Roman,” Logan said.  He’d assumed that was obvious.  “We have to wait for him.”
Patton nodded.  “We’re not leaving him behind,” he said.  “We’re a family.”
Remus raised his eyebrows slightly, and Logan got the feeling they’d gained a little of his respect with that decision.
“We’d have a place for you with us,” Remus said with a nod.  “As soon as you’re all ready to leave.  We have plenty of space for it.”
Logan nodded.  He looked around for a second before saying his next statement.  When he confirmed no one was there, he continued.  “I think,” he said.  “If you wanted our help or our knowledge, we would be able to provide you with quite a bit.”
“You don’t have to,” Remus said, instantly, like it wasn’t even a question.
Logan blinked.  “But it would be a tremendous help if you were to know how Vitalen operates.  It might tip the scales of the war.”
“People come first, Lo,” Remus said, narrowing his eyes firmly.  “We’re not pushing you guys, not ever.”
“And if you lose?”
Remus let out a shaky breath.  “Then we lose being who we are,” he said.
Logan didn’t know quite what to say to that.
Finally, Patton stepped forward.  “We appreciate this,” he said.  “We’re going to keep you updated on Roman.”
“Please do,” Remus said quietly, and Logan realized for the first time just how scared Remus was for his brother.
Logan wasn’t going to blame him.  Assurance or not, he was scared too.  Because, well…
Fact: All of this was scary.
Logan bit his lip.
Fact: That was okay.
