No, you don’t understand. Four Brothers said Evelyn took it upon herself to help foster children acclimate to the system and put them in homes for life, and when she met four boys who didn’t want to be with other families or stay on the straight and narrow she said fine, you’re my sons now, you get to take my name and live in my home and I’ll love you at your worst.

Noticing & Being Noticed
@sheiismother (evelyn) asked: "How did you find me?" (thank you!)
They aren't exactly the first words Esme is expecting to hear, especially when she's been teetering on the edge of a breakdown since the moment she left her family. Esme's arm falls to her side, knuckles having just lightly knocked against the door.
There is an eventual exhale, one that reminds Esme that Evelyn is quite literally the last option available to them— to Bella.
"I saw you online... my family and I, we're in a... unique situation. I could have sent a message or an email, I could have even phoned, but the urgency and importance of it all had be come in person, I truly don't mean to intrude."
She fiddles nervously with the buttons on her coat, anxiety stuck in her throat similarly to how it burns when thirsty.
"Will you help me?"

Please Don't Go
Jack Mercer x Reader
Summary: you had known Jack for years, and even gotten into a relationship. When the two of you join his brothers for their mother's funeral, you weren't expecting this outcome.
WARNING(S): Four Brothers spoilers, major character death, angst, swearing.
It had happened so fast.
While Angel and Bobby were busy interrogating Jeremiah, a knock was heard at the front door.
Curious, you had followed Jack to see who had knocked, as it was unusual for the Mercer household.
The two of you were met with a masked man, insulting Evelyn and throwing a snowball at Jack's face before beginning to walk away.
You should have stopped him. Should've grabbed his arm and told him it wasn't worth it. Lead him back to the couch to just forget about it.
Instead, you watched as he ran out towards the masked guy, anger raging through him not only because of the insult of his mom, but the snowball as well.
As you saw the man begin to pull out a gun, you found yourself running, by no volition of your own.
You heard someone calling yours and Jack's names, it was most likely Bobby. But you didn't care enough to think about it.
As you got closer, a gunshot rang out. And then another. And then multiple more.
You didn't know if you were one of the ones who got shot, and hell, maybe you were. But your focus was on your boyfriend, bleeding out and laying in the snow, calling out to you and Bobby with a rack of sobs.
You stumbled towards him, facing your back towards the shooters as if that would help Jack stay alive, though you knew better.
Your ears began to ring, the gunshots blurred with the yells, your heart thumping hard in your chest.
Your hands found themselves trying to cover his wounds as he grabbed onto you for dear life. He was scared, and not just for himself anymore.
You were actively putting yourself in danger. He was trying to get you to lay low or to find a spot in which they wouldn't be able to hit you, but that distant look in your eyes told him you weren't listening.
Almost unconsciously, you began to mumble comforting words to him. Whether it was really for yourself, him, or both of you, you didn't know.
One shot.
Two shots.
And suddenly, none.
Bobby, Angel, and Jeremiah made their way to the two of you, Bobby holding onto Jack who was now laying in your lap.
You couldn't tell what the boys were saying, but the yells were obvious. They were trying to have someone call 911.
"Please don't go." You found yourself begging, eyes downcast and cloudy as you looked down at Jack, one of your hands going through his hair in a comforting manner like you always had.
His eyes greeted yours, a smile on his face as blood poured from his throat.
"Shit, she's hit too!" Angel shouted as he noticed that the pooling blood wasn't just from Jack.
You didn't care, all that mattered to you was keeping the boy in your arms alive. But it was too late, he was gone. His skin cold against your own as your hand kept caressing his hair in that gentle, comforting way.
Darkness began to consume your sight, the adrenaline beginning to wear off as the gunshot wounds took over.
Bobby was holding your face in his hands as you felt yourself get weaker, "now don't you die on me too, ya hear?!" He cried, he was desperate. He had already lost his mom, and now his brother. He couldn't lose you too.
"Sorry, Bobby." You grinned with what little strength you had left, just to sass the man in front of you before death took a hold of you.
"No, don't you do that shit to me. Don't you do that shit!-"
That was the last thing you heard before you collapsed.
----------------------------------------------------------
Angst almost immediately for a new character? Who AM I? haha, anyway. Finally got some motivation to write, unsure if it'll stick though. Love yall <3
@frostymooxnlight cuz you asked to be tagged, lovely!

Alternate Instincts Ch.20
Tumblr media
Stephanie sighed again in boredom, kicking her legs as she sat on the examination table in the sterile white room that resembled every other examination room she's been in. They didn't let all five of them to be in the room with her so only Geralt was leaning against the wall, arms folding over his chest. He worked for the Council, the others didn't, so she supposed they trusted him to not do anything shady. Although she did catch a couple surprised, even fearful, looks in August's direction as they had walked inside the nondescript high rise downtown. Something she would ask him about later, if she remembered.
“We request your presence,” She said, mimicking Solo's voice and making Geralt perk a small smile, “But we're going to have your strip down to your smalls, put on a paper thin gown, and sit in a cold room for fucking forever.”
“Don't know what they expect to find.” Geralt said.
“I'm going to pop negative on a test. Every time I go for a check-up since you guys went public, they've tested me for lycanthropy along with other routine things and it came back negative every time.” She said, “And it's a feeling you guys have, not exactly something you can find a scan. Unless they hooked diodes to your head or something and had you gaze longingly into my eyes again.” He snorted at that.
“They're probably listening.” He said, “Don't give them ideas.”
“Come here.” She said, opening her arms and he arched a brow at her, pushing away from the wall. “I'm cold and you're a space heater. Get over here and cuddle me.” He snorted again, walking over to her and standing in front of her on the exam table, wrapping her in his arms and holding her against his chest.
“You are cold.” He remarked and she hummed happily as she sank into him.
“Warm.” She said wistfully and he smiled, pressing his lips to her hair as his hands moved over her back. “I'm worried.”
“About this?”
“No.” She said, shaking her head, “We haven't heard or seen anything of Jordan in a while and I—I want to believe that he's gone, that he gave up, but I don't...”
“I've felt him.” Geralt said, “Well, I've felt a Feral when I walk the territory at night. He hasn't tried anything and I haven't seen him, but he's there.”
“I don't like that.” She said, “That he's hiding out in the woods like some bogeyman, waiting for an opportunity.”
“He's never going to hurt you,” Geralt said, his arms tightening just a little bit. “Ever again.”
“Are you alone when you walk around at night?” She asked and he nodded against her hair. “Well, that's going to stop. Take one of the others with you. Buddy system, Mister.”
“I don't—”
“Geralt, for my peace of mind,” She said, “Take one of the others with you.”
“You're not going to ask me to stop altogether?”
“Would you if I did?”
“No.”
“So I'm not going to ask.” Stephanie said, “It may be Sy's territory on paper, but it's all of yours in truth. Also, please don't tell me you unzip on trees while you're doing your walk around.” He was quiet. “Oh sweet Jesus.”
“I don't always patrol on two legs.” He said in his defense and she thumped her forehead against his chest a few times in exasperation. The door to the room cracked open and he pulled away so they could look over at it.
“Is it safe to come in?” Asked the gentle female voice.
“Come on in.” Stephanie said and the door opened wider, the woman wearing a white physicians coat over mint green scrubs walking into the room.
“They told me your Mate was in here with you, and the last time I didn't ask when Mates were together, I walked in on them in flagrante delicto. Better safe than sorry.” She explained briefly, “Ms. Daniels, I'm Dr. Evelyn Mercer with the Pack Council, and this must be Geralt Rivian?” He nodded, “How are you both today?”
“Kinda wondering what you all expect to find, actually.” Stephanie said.
“Same, actually.” She admitted, “I've looked over your medical records and I contacted your GP to get current records and there are no biological signs of lycanthropy, but now that I'm in the same room as you, I can understand why they wanted me to check.”
“I don't feel entirely human, apparently.” She said with a shrug.
“We can't feel humans, exactly, they don't feel like anything in the same way that another person would feel like to you. It's more you don't feel entirely like a wolf. It's there, albeit faintly.”
“Sy said I have the “idea” of a wolf inside me.” Stephanie said and the doctor shrugged.
“Sounds about right.” She said, “Have you noticed any differences in the way other wolves acted around you after your accident versus before?”
“You guys weren't out when I had my accident so I wouldn't know who was a wolf and who wasn't.” She said, “But now that you mention it...”
“Steph?” Geralt asked.
“There was a jock asshole who used to make my life a living hell in high school, my entire friend group actually, a real walking cliche. We were kind of the social outcasts, didn't really fit in with the other groups, even though I was on the school rugby team. One day, a couple weeks after I got back, he was picking on the freshman in our group, being a raging douchebag, pushing him around. I got in his face and told him to back off. He looked like he was going to start in on me too, wouldn't have been the first time, but he suddenly backed down and apologized. He avoided us after that, wouldn't even look at us, or me.” Stephanie said.
“Dollars to doughnuts he was a wolf.” The doctor said, “He felt your “idea” of a wolf and it outranked his.”
“We have a theory that she'd be a female Alpha.” Geralt said.
“Multiple Mates, makes sense.”
“She claimed our Beta as her own.” Geralt said.
“She was able to do that?” Evelyn asked, her brows jumping in surprise.
“That's what Mike, the Beta, told me.” Stephanie said.
“Do you mind if I talk to him?” Evelyn asked and Stephanie shrugged.
“Fine by me.”

Haunted Holidays
December 20: Coming Home <-AO3 link!
Emily looked glumly at the boxes before her-she used to love Christmas, once upon a time. Did up the whole house the day after Thanksgiving, started her baking soon after. It was always a joyous time.
She can recall her first Christmas with Mitch, the two of them dancing to Nat King Cole playing on the turntable with only the tree lights to guide them. The year that Luke was nearly four, his big hazel eyes peeking over the counter in amazement as she made butter, sugar, and flour transform into cookies. How she caught him trying to scale the closet in an attempt to find presents the year he was seven.
The joy on his face when she gifted him the guitar the next year.
That was when everything changed. Music became an obsession, consuming Luke’s every waking moment. He was good, there was no arguing that, but Emily missed him helping her bake, or untangling her yarn as she knitted him another beanie.
She missed her son, but she had no idea how much worse it would get.
It was the year he was seventeen-long limbed and voice deep. She had found his grades-all low to failing. When she confronted him, he admitted to having dropped out. Who needed school when he was going to be a famous rock star?
It had been a horrible fight, harsh words that stung her heart to hear, even more vitriol spilling from her lips as Luke packed a bag and left.
He hadn’t been back since. And he never would be, since that July the police came to tell her that he little boy was dead.
That had been twenty five years ago.
Since then, the joy of the season had vanished for Emily. It was hard to decorate the tree with ornaments Luke had made as a child. To hang her and Mitch’s stockings but leave Luke’s in the box. To put aside the pang of the unopened presents still sitting in his room, even though she ached to put them under the tree. Like he would waltz in the door after band practice to open them.
It hurt a little less this year though. That nice Julie girl had given them Luke’s song-an apology and lament for her and what had been broken between them. She had come back a few times, to bring them cookies most recently, and had left with a new scarf wound around her neck.
She struck Emily as the kind of girl that Luke would be into; pretty, musical, kind. Though Luke had told her before he left that he liked everyone, and didn’t see anything wrong with that.
Emily wished she had taken the time to validate him then. To let him know she didn’t care who he loved, or how many people he chose to be with, as long as he was safe and happy. But she would never get the chance.
“Okay hun?” Mitch asked, hugging her from behind.
She hummed. “It’s still hard.”
“We don’t have to-“
She shook her head. “I don’t want to skip Christmas, I just wish…”
“I know,” he whispered, kissing the side of her head. “Let’s get started okay?”
He had already put the outside lights up, though neither of them had bothered turning them on, despite Christmas being less than a week away. They slowly put up everything-the garland, the wreaths, the Nativity.
“Remember when Luke used to play with the shepherds alongside his Ninja Turtles?” Mitch reminisced. “Or the time he replaced the baby Jesus with a Lego figure?”
Emily chuckled, “Oh yes, we got so mad-though Karen Mercer told me Alex used to do the same thing.”
“Have you spoken to them lately?” Mitch asked.
Emily shook her head. “I sent them a card, but that’s all. I don’t expect to get one in return-you know what they were like.”
“And Evelyn?”
“Sent a card to the forwarding address she gave me, but it got returned to sender, so who knows where the Peters are now,” Emily replied, running her finger along the edge of a photo of the boys, all smiling and twinkling eyes.
Soon all that was left was the tree, and Mitch squeezed her hand-it had always been Luke’s favourite thing to trim it. Insisting he could put the star on the top of his dad helped. Then being able to do it himself, with pride. That last year he was alive he hadn’t bothered to help, off at one gig or practice or another.
They had replaced the tree since then, a nice pre-lit thing that was a little smaller than their older one, but that was fine with Emily. With only the two of them they didn’t need a big tree.
She was about to start trimming when a ring of the doorbell sounded through their home. “Carollers or charity?” Mitch bet with an arch of his eyebrows.
“That or the Farris lady wants a cup of sugar again,” Emily replied. “I’ll get it.”
Only when she opened the door, it wasn’t any of those. There, looking just like the day he left, was Luke.
“Hey Ma, Merry Christmas.” He was holding hands with Julie…and was that Reggie? “Can we come in?”

3, 5, 6, 13, 23 from the video game asks! :)
Thanks for the ask!
video game questions
3. 1-3 games you’ve played in the past 12 months that you really enjoyed
the first Pillars of Eternity game (as evident by how much I've been posting about it) is still great and I 100% recommend it, it is darker fantasy than Dragon Age and there are a couple of Yikes Moments close to the beginning, but you WILL love at least one of your party members and the writing is pretty great. also a lot of its soundtrack was used in season 2 of Critical Role, and there is significant vibe/theme overlap, so if you enjoyed that season you'll probably like something about POE1 (also there are a lot of voices from the cr cast in the game itself. Matt Mercer notoriously voices two(2) of your best friends party members)
Dragon Age: Origins! The OG. The reason I'm even on this website. I had a pretty major reset when I realized that I accidentally locked myself out of Zevran's romance and now I have to do the Sacred Ashes quest again, but once I get through it things will get fun again. I've had a lot of fun writing Kyana meta based on this playthrough earlier this year, and I'm sure I'll have more things to say when I GET OUT OF THAT TEMPLE
I started playing The Sims 4 between writing sessions during NaNo. I made an off-brand Evelyn and another household based on two very old OCs, and I was really invested in them for a while (to the point of considering making fanart of the second household). I stopped playing at some point, but I think that, like Stardew Valley, this is going to be a fun thing to come back to every once in a while.
(the first answer was already very long so I'm putting the rest under the cut)
5. Game(s) coming out that you’re looking forward to
I played the demo for GLITCHED: The RPG a couple of years ago and it's been on my Steam wishlist even since. I don't actually know what's going on with the game (I think it was announced that it would come out in 2023 and then it didn't?), but I really hope that it will come out eventually because the demo is A Lot of my favorite things packed into one game. Like, honestly, even if the game won't be out for a while, I think that the demo itself is a really fun experience.
also, despite everything surrounding Dreadwolf, I'm definitely looking forward to it! though somewhat concerned about actually running the game because I Do Not Think my laptop will be able to handle it.
6. A series you’ve enjoyed since your early days of gaming and still enjoy to this day whether it still has games coming out or is one you return to
.........I mean, this is very much a Dragon Age blog. DA:O was one of my first RPGs (Skyrim was the other) and Here We Are all those years later
13. Quick, name the first song from a game that comes to mind
I haven't actually played it yet, but Challenging A Queen from Stray Gods. I'm definitely going to play it, though, because this is another game that looks like it was made personally For Me. and this song absolutely rules (my favorite version is the first one they played in this video)
23. A “Wow” moment of awe
...technically I didn't play this one either, but I watched a full playthrough of Wandersong on youtube, and the final song sequence I can't really talk about without spoiling everything was. very. Emotional(TM)
also for a more somber kind of awe, I really like the ambience in Emprise du Lion in DA:I and the White March DLC's entire deal in Pillars of Eternity. in both cases the environment made me just kind of pause for a second and take it all in (actually, adding to the song thing, the Abydon's Shell soundtrack from The White March is haunting)

Jack Mercer / Younger! Miller brother cross over | Jack x ofc | oneshot
Preview on tumblr | full one shot on A03 (only registered users at this time)
Words: 1,547
Warnings: family secrets, anger issues, an affair.
The guys are younger in this than the movie. The gif search is more of a dumpster fire than last year (esp Charlie it’s all charlie with crack ships 😭) so I gave up searching for the exact gifs I wanted. These are close enough. Gif credit to gif makers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Will and Benny POV
This could be bullshit.
They wouldn’t be surprised.
Within three months the Miller family as they knew it fell apart.
They were the family with the nice big house, military father, a room full of awards, everything had its place. Who would have known the man who freaked when his sons' misplaced things created the biggest mess of all.
Their father has always been a hard man, closed off, lacking affection. Thankfully the household wasn’t totally absent from it. Mom was reserved too, but softer. She’d give hugs and encouraging smiles. The most affectionate of all, the most open was their grandma.
It’s one of the many reasons the brothers got so close and depended on each other. Without that, things would have been a lot lonelier.
Their father worked a lot, often off on missions and spending lots of time away from home. The older they got, the more it seemed he didn’t want to be there. Maybe in reaction to that, their mother started to shut down too.
When it was time for Will to leave the house, he didn’t want to leave Benny behind, but it was time. Benny was still in High school then.
Their father was always a mystery, a man who barely showed emotions outside of his anger, a trait he unfortunately passed down to them both.
Because he was so closed off, Will figured he had some skeletons in his closet, he also wondered if his father was always this way or not.
Of all the secrets he could imagine, this wasn’t one of them. They have a younger brother. He’s closer to Benny in age than Will and grew up in Detroit.
It was hard to get the full story. And Will's mother fully shut down once it came out. She clearly didn’t know either.
From what Will could gather, their brother was with his birth mother until age 7 or 8. A woman his father had an affair with. The kid somehow ended up in foster care and was eventually cared for by a woman named Evelyn.
“Are you ready for this?”
Benny asked, he’s seated in the passenger seat and staring right at Will.
“I don’t know,” Will gripped the steering wheel tighter as he shook his head.

Oooo this sounds fun! Thanks anon! I'll only use my fics that are posted on ao3 instead of some of my unposted WIPs and the numerous amount of oneshots on this tumblr...
A - A Bet's A Bet - Ao3/Tumblr : Demon Slayer fic. Tengen x Kyojuro x you - Modern!AU. A night at Laser Tag goes from potential disaster to something incredible.
S - Serendipity - Ao3/Tumblr : John Wick fic. First impressions tend to range between mundane and interesting. For John, it's always been on the side of interesting. Fortunately, the same can be said for Toni.
I - It's Always Darkest Before the (Second) Dawn - Ao3 : HP/Shadow & Bone Crossover. Locked away in the Little Palace, attempting to hide her magic from the probing curiosity of the General, Hermione searches for her way home. R - Roots Run Deep by Vulpecula_et_Anser on Ao3. Naruto fic. [...] Sakura realizes she can live up to her namesake in one of two ways: float through life as a pretty thing, riding whims like the breeze...or become someone mighty and immovable, protecting the weak from the storm. She makes her choice. (Ridea's Note: Sakura is badass and hilarious in this. Highly recommend)
E - Empty Halls to Echo - Ao3 / Tumblr : The Punisher!AU! Billy has to take the stairs. He finds something unexpected.
N - Noise Complaint - Ao3 / Tumblr : Jack Reacher Movies. Charlie at her door is never a good thing...but at least he's effective when it comes to dealing with the noise above her.

R - Rebuilding A Home by thatmagickjuju / @thatmagickjuju : Four Brothers fic. But after events begin to happen and an old flame starts to ignite, can she handle being back home? Secrets unravel, feelings emerge, and the truth is all that can be heard. (Ridea's note: I love this fic. Olivia fits so well and the tension in this is perfect.)
A - A Study in Intimacy - Ao3 : Divergent fic. Eric makes a different choice at his Choosing Ceremony. It changes everything. - An AU to The Art of Seclusion.
G - Gonna Smoke You Out - Ao3 / Tumblr. The Punisher fic: No good deed goes unpunished...
E - Echoes by YanderexBabydoll / @seijorhi - Tokyo Revengers fic. There’s a sadness that hangs thick and heavy in the air around you. Grief and pain etched into the very foundations of this house. But you’re broken, too – hollowed out with emotions still too raw to touch. Maybe that's why you were drawn to it. (Ridea's note: I've reread this fic at least 4 times. It's the best type of spooky.)
Also be sure to check out my tag #other people's stories and #fic rec on my tumblr for more recommendations and some fantastic writing by others!

open to: anybody!
context: Evelyn, heavily pregnant, runs into someone she knows whilst out and about
Tumblr media
Only a few short years ago, this was just a dream. Now it’s reality. A very heavy, often uncomfortable, sometimes painful, and extremely rewarding reality. With people asking when she’s due since before Christmas (rude! she’s a small person!), Evelyn gets a good laugh out of telling them ‘six days ago’. She definitely looks it. Truly. It’s like she swallowed a beachball! Most first-time moms go over, Evelyn knows, but she desperately wants to meet this little person she’s kept safe for the last ten months.
She feels great today. With a song in her heart, Evelyn waddles down the street. Last-minute errands aren’t going to just do themselves, after all. Thankfully, almost everything is at this one shopping center and whatever else isn’t too far. Once she’s at her third stop of the day, she does a double take. “Wait a second… hi! Hi!” She hadn’t seen them in a while. Maybe they didn’t recognize her? “Evelyn,” she reintroduces herself. “Evelyn Mercer. Evie.”

Reasons to Cup a Face
@sheiismother (evelyn) asked: [BELIEF]: in a moment where the receiver is lacking in self-confidence, the sender cups their face tenderly and professes their faith in the receiver's abilities. (thank you!)
It's one of those nights where the echoes of Charles lingers cruelly in her thoughts. She falls asleep only to wake up covered in a cold sweat, her bump becoming more and more prominent with every passing week.
She had thought by now that any memories of her husband would have begun to fade, but life was strange in that regard. The closer she got to her due date, the more the man cropped up in her dreams. The closer she got to her due date, the more her lies began to crumble. Evelyn was hardly deaf. If anything, she would have both heard and seen Esme struggling with her night terrors. It didn't help that this pregnancy had offered her very little in way of feeling okay. Sickness had plagued her since her first trimester, it didn't seem as if it was going to end any time soon.
In the haziness of anxiety and sleep deprivation, Esme doesn't see Evelyn in the door way, nor how she crosses the space to kneel before her.
The touch comes unexpectedly and Esme flinches, uttering Charles' name in her confusion.
"I can do better," she replies, not completely comprehending Evelyn's words. "I'll do better, please, Charles."

50 Years of Island Books: Elise Hooper
Tumblr media
A native New Englander, Elise Hooper spent several years writing for television and online news outlets before getting a MA and teaching high-school literature and history. Her debut novel The Other Alcott was a nominee for the 2017 Washington Book Award. Three more novels—Learning to See, Fast Girls, and Angels of the Pacific—followed, all centered on the lives of extraordinary but overlooked historical women. Elise now lives in Seattle with her husband and two teenage daughters. You can read a great interview she did with Kelleen back in 2020 for the release of Fast Girls here.
Miriam: I loved The Other Alcott and Fast Girls. We're big fans and happy to have you on the blog. Let's start with your first visit to Island Books. Where were you in your career then, and what stood out about the store?
Tumblr media
Elise: If I remember things correctly, I was on Mercer Island because my younger daughter had swim practice at the Mercerwood Shore Club. This must have been sometime in the winter of 2017 because it was already dark and rainy and my first book, The Other Alcott, had not yet been released. Usually when my daughter had these practices, I'd find a spot in the clubhouse and work on my second book, but I was feeling restless and had just heard about Island Books, so I decided to drop off the swim carpool kids and go on a little literary island adventure. Because, duh, why work when you can visit a bookstore?
When I walked in the bookstore, I found the staff gathered around an opened bottle of champagne and they were celebrating, although I can't remember what the occasion was. The amazing part was that they poured me a glass and we started chatting. Instantly I felt at home. Books, bubbles, and smiling, welcoming faces on a dark and rainy night? Clearly the store was my kind of place. That evening marked the beginning of a great relationship.

Miriam: Seriously, why work when you can visit a bookstore? I love that you jumped right into our party. One of the reasons I enjoy your books so much is they bring often-overlooked stories of female perseverance into the spotlight. Do you have a theory as to why those stories resonated so much with our Island Books customers?
Elise: People always seem to enjoy stories about ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things. I think it's because we all hope we're capable of extraordinary things--and for the record, I firmly believe we are! We like to be inspired and what's more inspiring than a good underdog story? Let's face it, most of us, especially women, can relate to being underestimated. All my books are about women who are underestimated, but who then strike back to defeat the odds stacked against them, and sometimes we all need a nudge to remember that we too are capable of greatness. Does this mean we all need to run out and become Olympians, award-winning photographers, or survive a world war to be great? Nope, not at all. Each of us needs to figure out what greatness means for us.
Miriam: That's insightful, and when I think about it, some of the bestselling titles over the years at Island Books have been underdog stories, like the The Boys in the Boat and The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo. The survival of an independent bookstore in the age of Amazon is also an underdog story, so it's no wonder we like to champion those books. Perhaps a 50th anniversary is the nudge we all need to remember that we, too, are capable of greatness.
To our Island Books customers, we're getting dangerously close to the big 5-0 anniversary, so it's almost time to wrap up this series. For my next-to-last installment, I dragged the Island Books staff into a conference room and played detective. If we went to work with them in the store for a month, what would we learn about bookstore life? What are their biggest challenges? If they had a million dollars to improve the book industry or promote literacy, how would they spend it? All this and more will be revealed next time we meet.
—Miriam
