~*~
4. Hi! I'm looking for a fic where during the Lotus Pier seige there is an array or something set up that protects it and results in a baby for WWX and LWJ that is about the same age as A-Yuan - they already know (can't remember how). As a result of that array, the baby, A-Yuan, and people involved can shift into animals. Thank you! @hpikachu2003

5. looking for a fic that I thought I'd saved and hope i didn't dream it up... in this fic, I think wwx and lwj aren't tgt, but slept tgt? wwx finds out he is expecting, and instead of letting lwj know, he goes to the wens for refuge (I believe granny wen is mentioned in the description!) 6. Hi i am searching for a particular fic but it seems to have disappeared on me so the storyline was that LWJ and WWX were married but WWX wasn't happy in the marriage and LWJ comes to know this by hearing it from some where that WWX said so when he had gone to a flower house/brothel and then LWJ calls upon WQ to confirm if what he heard was true which she does and so he makes a decision to go leave planning to head to Yilling or CR and when he was travelling he encounters XXC and SL but doesn't reveal his identity of being WWX's husband just says that he is a disciple of the Lan and the 3 of them work on this night hunt where out of 3 wishes one would be fulfilled, is a curse related to i think some sisters also JWY was the emperor and WWX's post was either a general crown prince or a marquis and after WWX comes to know about LWJ leaving asks LWJ's maids who go with LWJ whenever he visits CR if they know where has he gone— with him also going to CR in search for LWJ (unsure) and JWY in a scene tells WWX some thing along the lines of that it wasn't probably also LWJ's choice, was being pressured into the marriage or so. most likely was muti-chaptered don't remember much of it and was on ao3. Thank you. @1p1rose1

7. Hi! I'm looking for a CQL!verse fic in which people can choose to tie a red string between them when they get married (sort of a soulmate au, but not really). When wei wuxian falls off the cliff to his death, lwj ties a string between them. when wwx comes back, the string is how lwj recognizes him. when the canon plot is over, lwj thinks he has to cut the string between them. i think this fic might have been deleted, though, but any help you can give would be welcome. thanks
FOUND! 💖 a trail of blood to find your way back home by blackelement7 (T, 19k, wangxian, JC & WWX, what if a soulmate string au, but without the soulmates aspect of it, a reflection on the nature of marriage, WWX is full of regrets, so is LWJ, Mutual Pining, Miscommunication, JC & WWX Reconciliation, JC is trying his best but words are hard and his brother is stupid, Siblings, Canonical Character Death, but it's just WWX, accidental 3zun feels, WWX as the most unreliable of narrators)

8. hi! thx so much for your work in the fandom. i'm looking for a fic where wwx is a sect leader and towards the end of the fic (I think) he's at a cultivation conference where someone tries to set fire to his rooms and he and lwj go into a qiankun box. i think at the very end wwx summons a phoenix born from the flames of his burned rooms. thx so much!

9. hello, thanks for your work!
i was trying to search for this fic where wwx from post-canon travels back in time and is in around the yllz time, he keeps doting on lwj and yllz (past wwx) gets a bit jealous but doesn't know what to name it. he refuses to believe that he married lwj in the future and the future wwx gets mad at him and tells him not to hurt lwj. can't seem to find it anywhere.

10. Hi buddy, I have one request. If you have came across a wangxian fic where Wei Wuxian is reincarnated and came to Gusu with Lan Wanji ( I think LWJ is the chief cultivator here) and realised that LWJ was getting marriage proposals from around the (cultivation) World a lot. And he propose to conduct a competition to find the most suitable candidate from the available lot while being secretly heartbroken that he could not have LWJ. I'm not sure if it's ABO or not. A-yuan also has an important role in this fic. Plz help..... @grrumpywoof
FOUND? a morbid longing by sunandseas (E, 24k, WIP, WangXian, Mutual Pining Misunderstandings, Porn with Feelings, Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, Omega LWJ, Alpha WWX, Bottom LWJ, Possessive WWX, BAMF WWX, Protective WWX, Hurt LWJ, Dark WWX)
is that the one where the suitors have to steal a token from lwj, and lwj gives it to wwx, but wwx thinks it was just the gusu jade access pass and was really sad about someone winning the token?? 🤔 (based on the comic about the witch's cat?)

11. Hii, I'm looking for a fic. It was about wwx wished that he does not exist in the life of people he love, because of what happens with jiang yanli, jin ling, jiang cheng and everyone he loves. 14. Hello ! First of all, THANK YOU for your hard work on this blog and WangxianFicRecs, I really enjoy my time on both ! :) This is a first for me so I hope I'm asking properly (otherwise, please, excuse me^^'). I'm looking for a fic I think was on a list in FicRecs last month but I can't seem to find it back... I just skimmed through it at the time and thought that it was great and that I would come back to it later... except I forgot to bookmark it and had not luck searching my AO3 history so far :'(. It was a Wangxian AO3 fic and the only thing I remember clearly is a sentence where Wei Ying thinks about the way Lan Zhan smells and says that he decides LZ's scent smells like love.
Aaaaand I'm sorry because I know this isn't much, but if by any chance someone happened to know which fic it is and I could stop racking my brain, I would be super grateful for that ! :)
I wish you all a wonderful day/night !
I was #14 in the April 2nd FicFinder. I finally went through all of February posts and found again the fic I was looking for! It was in fact in your Crossdressing comp and it wasn't about LZ smelling like love but LZ's kiss tasting like love 😅.
Anyway, here's the fic : only the dead (have seen the end of war) by comforting_monachopsis.
Sorry to have bothered you and thanks again ! ❤️

If I'm not mistaken, Qin su and Lan Xichen is best friend and Xichen really sad and disappointed at himself for not realising his best friend is long dead. There are also part where wwx try to sunburn Qin su face so it become unrecognisable.
B) a fic where Lan Qiren is mistakenly drink wine in his teapot and he is doting to Wei Wuxian and told about marriage arrangement that has been sign by Cangse Sanren and Lan Wangji when they are a little kid.

17. Hi! How are y'all doing? for the next fic finder, I'm looking for a modern au, no magic, where fem!wwx goes to live with lwj after she turns 18 and her main goal is to get together with lwj so she's very shameless to the point that lwj has to tell her that he'll have to set rules if she continues like that, and asks if she's aware that he's a man

Child LWJ refuses to leave the nearby inn because he's waiting for his uncle and brother, who do not come. WWX waits with him and says he was a student of LQR, but LWJ doesn't believe him because his uncle did not teach when LWJ was young. Eventually WWX convinces LWJ to go to the burial mounds with him, and he writes a letter to LXC but he isn't sure if LWJ will recognize his brother as an adult.
Thanks in advance!
FOUND? I think this fic is the deleted "Staying close to you" by Venon. I couldn't find it on the wayback machine but I have a copy.

☔ for the ask game? (idea you're not sure you'll write, if the emoji doesn't come through)
☔Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?
I kind of dropped out of the MDZS fandom like a rock after finishing my novel-length longfic, and the fic I most regret leaving unwritten is a bullet-point au in which Jiang Fengmian just cannot find his friends' lost son, he gives up, so Wei Wuxian grows up entirely on the streets, scrounging his way to enough cultivation education to invent demonic cultivation (because that's still the kind of person he is), and JFM assuages his conscience a little by inviting a different random clever basically-an-urchin - Meng Yao - into Jiang Sect.
Highlights include:
Meng Yao: wow the obvious fault lines in this family make everyone so easy to manipulate- wait, am I being offered real affection and trust? That's...fine.
Meng Yao trying desperately to hide his background, but he goes to visit his mother when she's ill. Jiang Cheng follows him, because Meng Yao is his best (only) friend, and Jiang Yanli follows Jiang Cheng to make sure he doesn't get in trouble, and then (JYL steps on JC's foot to stop him from saying the first thing that comes to mind) they both react with compassion and sympathy rather than scorn to Meng Shi and her profession. Meng Yao experiences several more Real Emotions.
Teen rogue cultivator Wei Wuxian just kinda. invites himself. to Lan Summer School, on the strength of Cangse Sanren's name. JFM is delighted when he hears, encourages JC to befriend him (Meng Yao: [jealous cat hisses]) and would have invited him home at the end of the summer...if WWX didn't get himself expelled halfway through for punching Jin Zixuan's smug face.
He also crashes Terrible Wen Summer Camp. Gets stuck in a cave with Lan Wangji, etc.
Wei Wuxian has kinda been a Batman-esque vigilante in Yiling (moody, dramatic, clad in black, fights ghosts and also bad guys). When the Wens move in, he shifts to being a more actively anti-authoritarian Batman-esque vigilante. Wen Qing is annoyed. Wen Ning is enamored.
The Wens attack Lotus Pier, because they were always going to attack Lotus Pier next. Jiang Cheng does get his golden core torn out. Wen Ning rescues him, because Wen Ning is always a hero even if Wei Wuxian isn't immediately present. Meng Yao decides it's time to do what he does best...so he promised Jiang Cheng that he'll be back, then goes to the Nightless City and says, "oh golly gee, I, second disciple of Jiang Sect, am so defeated and humbled by the mighty Wen! Can I please join, oh magnificent masters?"
Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian has rescued Lan Xichen (this is gonna get him so many bonus points with his sexy law-abiding nemesis LWJ) , and then gotten himself thrown into the Burial Mounds for snarking at Wen Chao...which is a lot like throwing Brer Rabbit into the briar patch
Sunshot Campaign! With no golden core, JC can't really rebuild Jiang Sect, but he gets reliable intel from a man on the inside and he humbles himself enough to ask Wei Wuxian for tutelage in talismans, and of course you'd literally need to tie him up to keep him from going out and kicking ass.
Wei Wuxian is peak Yiling Patriarch because it's the right thing to do. (LWJ: Come back to Gusu with me (so I can aggressive cleanse your spirit, then maybe dick you down so hard that neither of us can movie for a week))
AFTER THE WAR: Jin Guangshan dramatically recognizes war hero/Wen Ruohan-slayer Meng Yao as Jin Guangyao, his son and new sect member... and Meng Yao, having grown up with the absolute Ride Or Die nature of Jiang Sect, and with more intimate knowledge (via JYL's engagement and YZY's friendship with Madame Jin) of how much JGS sucks, says, "Thanks but no thanks, I will be staying with my sworn brother and sect leader Jiang Wanyin to rebuild Jiang Sect."
It's just about his ambitions, okay! He'll FUNCTIONALLY be Sect Leader; Jiang Cheng literally doesn't have a golden core! (Though he's still absolutely first-rate in swordwork and his talismans are fucking superb. The thing about Jiang Cheng is that he will rise to the occasion, always.) Also, that 'sworn brother' thing was not agreed upon in advance; Meng Yao totally publicly backed him into that corner - in which he didn't mind being. Jiang Cheng is pretty damn sure he's getting the better of this deal, and he's kinda right.
Between JC's prestigious name and insane levels of personal dedication, MY's people skills and equally insane (but slightly more calculated) levels of personal dedication, and JYL securing a very favorable loan from Madame Jin, they hella get Jiang Sect back on its feet.
Meanwhile, WWX has again refused to go with LWJ to learn "proper" cultivation or anything else...and JGS is seeking power, and abusing Wen prisoners of war...
Wen Qing comes to Lotus Pier, finds Meng Yao, and says, "Please help save my brother. We helped save yours. You owe us this much." Meng Yao, being Meng Yao, thinks, I do rather owe here, but this is politically delicate... Who can I foist this off on whom I don't mind seeing torn apart by every righteous sect... and forwards her to Wei Wuxian.
Who does his righteous Wei Wuxian thing
There's a big dramatic meeting of sect leaders & etc about this, in which JGS beats his war drums, etc. etc. Meng Yao feels slightly bad but not, like, that bad. Wei Wuxian tried to steal his brother when they were teenagers, and again while MY was away during the Sunshot Campaign, so he probably deserves to die.
Afterwards, JYL with her unerring Older Sister senses pulls MY (and JC) aside and hisses, "A-Yao, what did you do?"
Do they end up saving the day? Is Wei Wuxian just destined to doom himself with his particular combination of pride, self-neglect, and blithe refusal to play by everyone else's rules? I never actually decided!

Fit for Purpose Deleted Scenes VII: Grab Bag
The final batch of deleted scenes from Fit for Purpose are scenes that didn't fit any of the previous themes, featuring Jin Guangshan, Xue Yang, and WWX's feelings about being resurrected. Other deleted scenes posts are linked in the masterpost. I hope you enjoy!
This next scene is more of a sketch than a draft. Warning for Jin Guangshan being Jin Guangshan and Madam Yu being Madam Yu.
Jin Guangshan comes to visit.
He tries to talk to WWX alone.
WWX likes sex; likes making people feel good. Even guests, who he usually doesn’t know well. But he doesn’t like Jin Guangshan.
Still, he knows he should say yes – it would be good for Yunmeng Jiang, it would make for better relations with Lanling Jin, and it would especially be good for Jiejie, since she’ll marry into Lanling Jin someday—
Yu-furen interjects. “What do you want to discuss with our Wei Ying, Jin-zongzhu?” she asks, eyes like steel. “I insist on being part of the discussion, so I may share Jin-zongzhu’s insights with Jin-furen. I know she would be interested.”
Jin Guangshan backs off.
“Don’t be so shameless next time,” she tells Wei Ying.
Wei Ying says “yes,” says “sorry, Yu-furen.” He doesn’t know how to say, “I wasn’t.” Doesn’t know how to say, “All I did was be what I am.”
Then we have a little bit from the first encounter with Xue Yang. Again, mostly me getting high on my own worldbuilding—but for real, I didn’t want to make it seem like the mating-related stuff is the only thing that distinguishes betas from alphas and omegas.
“I still don’t get it,” A-Cheng fumes, after Xue Yang is defeated by Xiao Xingchen—Xiao Xingchen! Wei Wuxian’s heart is aflutter—with a little help from Wei Wuxian. “We didn’t smell a thing—”
“Xue Yang is a beta,” Xiao Xingchen says simply. “Stealth is his gift.”
A-Cheng narrows his eyes at Wei Wuxian. “Then why are you always as loud as a herd of water buffalo?” he grumbles under his breath.
“His amorality and viciousness, though, are purely his own,” Xiao Xingchen continues.
Then there was the phase where I felt like I needed to get into detail about WWX’s take on his second life. This was one of those scenes where it was useful for me to write it just to figure out for myself how this version of WWX felt about being resurrected, even though I didn’t use it.
When Wei Wuxian was brought back to life, traded for Mo Xuanyu, he hadn’t seen the point. His entire first life had been a failure – what was he supposed to do with a second one?
But then, there had been Wen Ning: not burned and scattered as he thought, still capable of being saved. There had been Jin Rulan – not a tiny infant who could be protected with charms and spells, but a snotty, insecure teenager who needed something more complicated: a teacher and a mentor, someone who would let him take risks but not let him take himself too seriously. There had been Lan Zhan: not his enemy after all, but his ally and friend, still true to him and to their vow to uphold justice. There had been A-Cheng, even, who learned the most terrible secret left between them and had brought him Chenqing in the end anyway.
And most of all, there was A-Yuan. The Wens’ A-Yuan, Lan Zhan’s Sizhui – grown up so well. Smart and sweet and kind and brave and humble – full of every virtue that the people who raised him had possessed, and yet entirely his own person.
So many people had died at Wei Wuxian’s hands, or by his faults and failings. And yet—A-Yuan had lived. Because of him. For all the things he did wrong, he did this one thing right.
Finally, here’s a second take on WWX’s feelings about being resurrected. I took multiple swings at this because it seemed weird to me, for a while, that I would have all these flashbacks and not have a flashback that deals with basically the most consequential event of the last 15 episodes… but then I figured out that I could do one ex post (with NHS), which would be way faster, and I also nod at these resurrection feelings in the flashback with LWJ on the bridge in the moonlight. So I think we got there in the end, without having to spend a whole flashback with WWX summing up his life so far.
Jiejie is dead. So are Wen Ning and Wen Qing and A-Yuan. Lan Zhan hates him. Jiang Cheng tried to kill him, and Wei Wuxian couldn’t even give him that. Jiejie’s son is an orphan, at Wei Wuxian’s hands—and the first time Wei Wuxian meets him, he taunts him for it, steals his dead father’s sword, and leaves him facedown in the dirt.
He’s a failure of a beta – everyone knows that. But that’s no excuse not to at least try. And his responsibility here is pretty clear.
YU-FUREN QUOTE
So he decides, staring down into the river water, to devote his second life to protecting Jiejie’s son. Sure, there’s a slight snag in that Jin Ling doesn’t know who he is and would probably try to kill him if he found out. And a slightly larger snag in that Jin Ling seems to be hanging around Jiang Cheng a lot, who almost certainly does know who he is and will definitely try to kill him.
Still, he has to do something with this redundant life of his. And if he ends up dying at Jiang Cheng’s hands or for Jiejie’s son, well… second time’s the charm, right?
Only it doesn’t work like that. Wen Ning turns out to be alive; Zidian fails to kill Wei Wuxian; and when he passes out, he wakes up in Cloud Recesses. In, as far as he can tell, Lan Zhan’s bed.
I spent a lot of time trying to get here, sixteen years ago, he thinks, still a little delirious.
And Lan Zhan looks up at him, eyes soft and hair unbound, and Wei Wuxian thinks… that maybe he was wrong. About a lot of things.
Maybe this is what a second chance looks like.
I hope you have enjoyed these deleted scenes! I probably spent just as much time figuring out how not to write this story as I did figuring out how I should write it 🤣 but I’m happy with the end result, and that’s what matters.

WWX's emotional attachment to Emperor's Smile
Tumblr media
The little scene where WWX discovers LWJ has a secret stash of alcohol in the Jingshi is just brilliant. It's just after a beautifully poignant moment where WWX is reminiscing of the sandalwood scent that he associates with LWJ. I loved this scene so much, I wrote a post on it some time ago! It's quite comical how WWX's feelings for LWJ start to become apparent to the reader and before they can be explored any further... he's distracted by booze! But if you scratch the surface of this scene, it is just as significant as the scent of sandalwood.
After he returned from Gusu to Yunmeng, Wei WuXian never had the chance to drink the “Emperor’s Smile” made exclusively by Gusu’s experts ever again. He had thought about this for his entire life, always telling himself to come back to taste it if he ever received the opportunity. But the opportunity never came.
Chapter 11 - ExR translations
A simple little paragraph, but to me I think it means so much more. Granted, WWX likes his liquor and he might not have had much of a chance to visit Gusu again in his first life - but I think on a re-read, this becomes much deeper. Personally, his slight fixation with Emperor's Smile is more meaningful than just drinking an exclusively brewed alcohol - it's because it reminds him of LWJ. He first met him when he was smuggling some back into the Cloud Recesses, when they were both just around 15 years old. It's sentimental to him.
WWX states he thought about this his entire life - which is quite a statement to make about a particular brand of alcohol. Unless, what he secretly thought of, was going back to Gusu and meeting LWJ, using the liquor as an excuse. He often reframes his thoughts and makes excuses for feelings his not ready to face - so this isn't something new.
It's not much of a jump to assume that Emperor's Smile reminds WWX of LWJ. WWX's thoughts often wander back to LWJ, especially when something reminds him of the latter - so why should this be any different. In fact, it's a very natural thought process. WWX was caught smuggling alcohol back not once, but twice, by LWJ during the time they studied together.
It reminds him of happier times. Back where it all started. Back when everything was much calmer and they didn't have to worry about awful things such as wars and losing loved ones. It's obvious that WWX's time at the Cloud Recesses was something that he cherished, because he remembers them so fondly, even years later.
WWX even pines for those days and reminisces about them quite often in his first life. Most notably, his reminiscing is nearly always centred around LWJ, whenever he is thinking about that particular time in his life. So it wouldn't be strange for Emperor's Smile to conjure up all of these precious memories and feelings as well.
If you think about it...
If WWX hadn't attempted to smuggle the alcohol back, he'd not have met LWJ that faithful night. WWX wouldn't have seen the unparalleled beauty of LWJ standing in front of him, or been in awe of his handsome face. They wouldn't have fought on the rooftop, or gotten the chance to be impressed with each others sword and fighting skills. WWX wouldn't have seen LWJ lose his composure and get angry - which he later admits he absolutely loves seeing and even gets a sexual kick out of it!
Yes, he might have met LWJ later while staying at the CR - but if WWX hadn't attempted to smuggle the liquor and gotten himself in trouble, LQR might not have had a reason to enlist LWJ in his class to keep an eye on WWX. Really, their first meeting was a perfect storm that ignited the undeniable chemistry they both felt for one another. They were drawn towards each other from that moment on. So of course it will evoke an emotional response from WWX, subconsciously or otherwise. Further to that, we actually see LWJ showing he has a similar emotional response to this particular brand of alcohol, for similar reasons as well.
The last two sentences of the above scene seem to have a particularly melancholy hint to them. Because, WWX never got the opportunity (or invite he might have secretly been holding out for from LWJ!) to visit Gusu or his favourite Lan family member. It's quite obvious it's something he truly regrets. It's a missed opportunity. A missed opportunity for so much more than just a drink of nice liquor.
At least in the end, WWX can now have as much Emperor's Smile as he wants - as his doting husband spoils him rotten and pampers him until his heart is content. Simply because LWJ knows his Wei Ying deserves it all.

hmm top five jc and wwx scenes? ten if you want but if that's too many, pretend I just said five
OOOOOOOHH I will do ten because I am insane. these aren't in any particular order because how could I rank them
wei wuxians last words being jiang chengs name. I can never and will never be normal about this
when they get back from their yin iron hunting adventure and are kneeling in the throne room waiting for jiang fengmian to come and scold them and wei wuxian is scratching jiang chengs shoulder sooo tenderly and they have their "what did I do in a past life to be cursed with a brother like you?" "in our next lives, let's be brothers again" exchange. something so tender about in the moment something so devastating in retrospect
when jiang cheng kneels in front of his mother and Tells her to stop hitting wei wuxian with zidian... a heartbreaking selfless act of love to disrespect his mother and put himself in harms way but also an interesting look into how and when jiang cheng decides that things are wei wuxians fault
in xuanwu cave then jiang cheng has to be Dragged Out Screaming in order to leave wei wuxian behind. makes me feel some type of way
I'm cheating here by combining several different moments from the same sequence into one list item but well I get to make the rules. but anyway when jiang cheng wakes up after his core is taken and wei wuxian sees him looking at the scars on his chest and is like don't worry I'll find a way to erase them. and then jiang cheng hits him and he's like if that's what makes you feel better you can hit me again. just the way that wei wuxian would do Anything to make jiang cheng feel better anything to see him smile. and then later when wei wuxian decides that he really Would do anything to take jiang chengs pain away and he's making him eat all his food, piling more into his bowl, before telling him anything about how they'll "get his core back" and jiang cheng in his frenzy and his trust eats his food with his chopsticks upside down. imagine I've said all of this in one breath shaking like a chihuahua
THE HUG ough I always forget how emotional it makes me until I see it again... "I was worried about you these three months" 🤧
the little flashback where baby yunmeng bros are holding hands and playing with each other.... absolute insanity
AAAAAHHGHHHBFDD when jiang cheng comes to the burial mounds. and wei wuxian tries to take his hand to lead him around but jiang cheng will not follow. and there are little moments that are Almost normal because affection comes so naturally but also because you can tell that wei wuxian is trying So Hard to make it seem like everything is okay, like it's all still the same. wei wuxian saying that yiling and yunmeng are close and he can visit whenever he likes, and jiang cheng telling him to stop being foolish. "no precedent? I'll be the precedent!" "wei wuxian, do you have to make me spell it out? if you keep protecting them, I won't be able to protect you". their whole conversation in the cave - jiang cheng full of concern, not even angry, trying to get wei wuxian to make the safe and easy choice, the one that will keep them together, wei wuxian, who Always carries the burden, trying his hardest to protect jiang cheng and their sect while still doing what he knows is right but never letting jiang cheng see even a drop of his pain and his heartbreak. "you are asking for the moon again". how they're both sort of just in disbelief of the other person as they agree to the fight
waaahg when they're goofing around about the soup with jiang yanli at lotus pier after jiang cheng eavesdrops on their conversation... soooo siblings and the last little bit of light and innocence before it all falls apart 👍
and last but most certainly not least goes to the entirety of their interaction in guanyin temple. jiang chengs childish rage, the way wei wuxian just sits there and takes it, "why didn't you tell me!" "because I didn't want to see you like this", wei wuxian wiping away jiang chengs tears, the way that throughout their entire conversation until that point you can see wei wuxian almost reach out to touch jiang cheng several times before clenching his fingers again, the fact that even tho they reveal secrets and give apologies and explanations it is Not all said and done, their relationship, realistically, is not fixed with a single conversation, there is still work to do but you know that it will be done
honorable mention to "take care" followed by The Flashback... technically the scene is About yunmeng bros but they aren't actually interacting so I didn't include it in the main list. something about the seed of their reconciliation being planted by jiang cheng committing the truly selfless act of letting wei wuxian go. the way that it would have been so easy and so in character for jiang cheng to reveal the monumental secret of his own sacrifice, to hold it against wei wuxian, just one more thing he believes he is owed, but in a moment of growth all jiang cheng wants is for wei wuxian to be well. okay.

Hello yes, for the WIP questions, I am intrigued by Wei Wuxian getting arrested?
Okay so! There's this angsty teen movie that I used to love when I was an angsty teen (and recently rewatched for the nostalgia factor) called 'According To Greta'. It stars Hilary Duff as Greta, an edgy, suicidal, problem child teenager sent to live with her grandparents for the summer in New Jersey, and no one is really happy about the arrangement. She starts seeing this boy named Julie who's a linecook at a restaurant in town, and when she finds out he was arrested and sent to juvie as a teenager for joyriding she decides to invite him over and use him to shock her grandparents' conservative sensibilities. He's a nice guy and the grandparents end up liking him which Greta is pissed about, and Julie's pissed because he doesn't appreciate being used like that and tells her so. Of course they make up and go on their merry little summer romance way -- to the point where Greta invites Julie up to her room one night to try to sleep with him, but the grandparents' nosy neighbor sees him climbing the trellis and calls the cops to come arrest him, and the grandparents believe for a brief minute or two that he's gone back to his criminal ways to rob their house (which is cleared up without him actually getting arrested).
But! all of this to say - I just had it in my head that it might be a fun little angsty scene to have a WWX who's been kicked out of the Jiang house come to LWJ for a place to sleep for the night. WWX is having a shitty night and has no idea what he's going to do next, LWJ (who doesn't know what's going on with the Jiangs) is wondering if this is finally the night all his secret teen romance dreams come true, and then the cops show up to arrest WWX because someone in the Lans' prissy uptight neighborhood saw him climbing up the trellis to LWJ's room and decided to call 911 about a suspected burglary. That's about as far as I got and I don't know if I'll continue it or not, but here's most of it!
--//--
“Lan Zhan,” he whispers, tapping carefully on his window. It’s thick and double paned but he’s just barely tapping it with one knuckle, half afraid and half hoping that Lan Zhan sleeps lightly.
He knocks for a good while, maybe ten minutes he thinks, before a bleary-eyed Lan Zhan glares at him through the glass, his scowl almost hidden by the reflection of the full moon. Wuxian hunches his shoulders a bit and tries to look apologetic as he waves, a weak, half-hearted thing that at least convinces Lan Zhan to open the window.
“Wei Ying?” he breathes and Wuxian thinks he could cry, if he let himself. Lan Zhan always says his name so gently, so long as Wuxian hasn’t pissed him off lately. “Why- what are you doing?”
“Can’t a boy visit another boy in the middle of the night without it being weird?” he asks with none of his usual breeziness. Even Wuxian is well aware that it’s terrible reasoning and Lan Zhan would have every reason to shut the window again and leave him outside; not that that would be so bad either, it’s a mild summer night and the widow’s walk is a perfectly quiet and private place to sleep if he must do it outside.
“…Mn. The screen-“ Lan Zhan finally murmurs and Wuxian blinks uncomprehendingly for a long moment. It takes Lan Zhan lifting the window up as high as it will go and pressing his hand meaningfully against the big screen still blocking the opening before Wuxian laughs, self-deprecating, and hurries to help Lan Zhan with all the fiddly little pieces of metal holding it in place. When they’re all loosened Lan Zhan pops it out, both of them freezing the moment after to make sure the noise didn’t carry far enough to wake Lan Qiren.
Wuxian clambers into Lan Zhan’s bedroom and spares a moment to be glad that the other boy hadn’t bothered to turn on his lamp. Still, caution is a virtue and so Wuxian makes a little show out of examining the room for the softest patch of the floor to sleep on, goading and pushing until Lan Zhan says, stiff as a board, “We may share.”
Sharing is so fucking good, too. Sharing means Lan Zhan’s warm back pressed against his, and the whisper quiet of his regular breathing, and the knowledge that nothing that can hurt him will find him here.
But then, of course: he should’ve known better than to trust his luck.
It feels like no sooner has he closed his eyes to bask in Lan Zhan’s proximity on his way to sleeping than he’s startled awake again by a sudden whooping, cutting on and off strangely in a way he recognizes instinctively before he even opens his eyes to see red and blue flashing through Lan Zhan’s bedroom in dizzying snapshots.
“Shit -“ he hisses, launching himself out of bed “- fuck!!” A quick glance out the window shows not one but two squad cars, and Wuxian backs away from the nonexistent protection the glass offers quickly enough that he bumps into Lan Zhan behind him.
“Wei Ying?”
“Fuck, I have to go, sorry Lan Zhan I just-“ Wuxian makes it to the bedroom door before he remembers Lan Qiren’s presence somewhere on the other side of it.
“Wei Ying!”
“Sorry, Lan Zhan, I’m sorry-“ he stammers as he brushes past him and shoves the window up its track again. He stumbles out onto the widow’s walk, foot catching on the sill before he rights himself. He’s barely thinking beyond a panicked need to run as he swings over the railing and finds purchase in the same trellis he’d climbed up, hidden somewhat in the shadows between the Lan house, their privacy fence, and the house next door. He descends as quickly as he can, heart rabbiting in his chest and his sweat-slick hands slipping on the smooth bark and leaves of the climbing vine.
He’s roughly three feet away from solid ground and the ability to run for his life when rough hands yank him down and throw him towards the road; there’s no recovering his balance on this one and he goes down hard with a grunt, the pavement scraping up both hands and the arm he’d landed on. He scrabbles to his feet, shoes scuffing on the pavement, but finds himself abruptly caught in a chokehold, his feet flailing wildly as he tries to throw the fucking bastard choking off his air off-balance enough to get free.
“Wei Ying!!”
“WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!” Lan Qiren’s bellow is by far the loudest thing to happen yet save the chirping of the sirens, and Wuxian is at least pleased to see two of the officers standing by to grab him flinch away from the absolute fury of a be-slippered Lan Qiren coming down the front stairs, furiously belting a robe over his pajamas. “You!”
“We got a call about an intruder, sir, and we just caught him sneaking back out,” the officer holding him grunts; Wuxian kicks his feet again and tries to ignore the edges of his vision starting to fuzz out.
“Shufu, please-“ oh Lan Zhan’s here now, Wuxian realizes. He must be hallucinating from the lack of oxygen or something, because Lan Zhan looks more distressed than Wuxian has ever seen him.

A (probably rambling) Lan Qiren Appreciation Post
Ok, let me start by saying I'm fully aware that he isn't a "perfect" person. He is a human and comes with human flaws, however, I often find that he gets reduced to nothing but rules and anger, which in my opinion isn't fair. Many seem to forget all the things he has gone through and accomplished, seeing only a strict man obsessed with rules and filled with anger, a hindrance for his nephew and his husband. It's true that he is strict and does like the rules, just as he often appears angry too, but that's not all he is.
(Chapters the "facts" come from are ch. 64, 68, 79, 111 and 117.)
Anyway, let's start from the beginning. We all know Lan Qiren is the younger brother of Qingheng-jun (QHJ), the previous Lan sect leader. It's fair to assume that QHJ was trained and moulded to become a sect leader from childhood, becoming a renowned cultivator with an impressive reputation from an early age, so I bet everyone assumed he'd be a great sect leader, one who would fulfil his duty well. Then, at twenty, he suddenly announces his marriage and goes into seclusion, pretty much throwing all the responsibilities of a sect leader on his younger brother, Lan Qiren, overnight. At this time, LQR is at the oldest nineteen (though I hc him as 18), but since we don't know the actual age gap between QHJ and LQR, we can't know for sure how old he is. However, he is a teen that suddenly finds himself being a sect leader in everything but name. Not only that, he pretty much lost his brother too, since QHJ went into seclusion and unless he visited him there (if it was even allowed), he wouldn't see him.
Like this isn't enough, he becomes an uncle twice within a few years (here too, we don't know the exact age gap between LXC and LWJ, as well as how long after the marriage LXC was born). Although the babies are raised by others at first, they are handed over to LQR "once old enough to be taught and raised", so LQR was their de facto parental figure. And suddenly LQR has a sect to run and two sect heirs to raise and he himself is most likely still under 25. He also wasn't trained for this the same way QHJ was, but the Gusu Lan Sect still flourishes. Yes, it was most likely already doing well before him, but he continued that and also ended up becoming a renowned teacher. On top of that he raised two boys into becoming two of the cultivation world's most renowned members, and let's be honest, both LXC and LWJ are good people. If LQR was such a horrible parental figure, then I doubt both of them would've turned out as well as they do. I'm not saying he's doing everything perfectly (no parents or parental figures ever do), but he did well.
Yes, he was strict with them and the reason was how their mother's crime had caused QHJ to throw away his life (as well as abandoning his duty) and LQR feared his nephews might do the same thing unless he was strict with them. In other words, he didn't want them to do something impulsive that would then ruin their chance of happiness (and maybe because it might also lead them to lose the ability to be with their family, like for QHJ). It might not be the best way to show care, but for a Lan who saw his accomplished brother throw away everything for a woman that didn't return his love, it makes sense. He also wouldn't be the only uncle who shows affection through irritation and scolding, would he? (Yes, Jiang Wanyin, I'm looking at you.)
Another thing that's good to keep in mind is that we often get to see LQR from WWX's point of view, unless someone is speaking about LQR, and WWX is chaos, so obviously anything strict will appear stricter. I don't say that's necessarily the truth, but it might be good to keep in mind.
Let's continue to a less than happy part, LWJ hiding WWX. Firstly, it was LXC who fetched LQR and the elders out of worry, but LQR too was worried, albeit showing it as frustration. I don't think corporal punishment is okay, however in this world, it is and LWJ did severely injure 33 elders of his clan, in the view of that, the punishment does make sense. It also makes sense that LQR is the one sentencing the punishment, since it's only him or LXC who can do it and I believe that LQR doesn't want LXC to have to punish his own brother. I do not see this as LQR not caring about his nephew, as I know many do. I fully believe that whipping LWJ did emotionally hurt LQR, but rules are rules.
Time for WWX's return. As we all know, LQR falls into a coma after trying to play Evocation for NMJ's arm and LXC later states to WWX after they return from the Cultivation Conference that LQR has just woken up. I read somewhere that it was about a month between Evocation and the Cultivation Conference, meaning that LQR has been in a coma for 3-4 weeks. No matter your golden core, that got to take a toll on you, which seems to be true as he is the one leading the Lans during the second siege of the Burial Mounds and he "stood before the crowd, looking considerably more aged. There were even streaks of white in his hair." Yes, this might be due to the stress of finding out that one of his nephews is with the returned WWX and the other nephew is gone (in the claws of JGY), plus the fact that Lan Juniors have been kidnapped. However, if this were the case, he would've aged a lot during the Sunshot Campaign and the First Siege of the Burial Mounds. I firmly believe it's the resentful energy that put him into a coma that took its toll on him. Anyway, no matter why, here he is, maybe a week or so after waking up after a nearly month long coma, leading a group of Lan cultivators. And no, it's not just to fetch LWJ, because he shows care for those under his command:
"Lan Qiren hadn’t wanted to go in, at first. He would rather have remained outside and fought until the bitter end. However, he was not waging this battle alone—there were many Lan and Jin Clan cultivators under his command, and they were not the main force in the fight. He did not want to treat the lives of those disciples with such disregard. If there was a thread of hope for survival, he was compelled to seize it."
As stated later, LQR is not a reckless man. He will do what the rules say is right and what will benefit the most people, even if he disagrees on a personal level (in this case wanting to fight, but knowing others might die if he does, since they would remain as well). He is also not so proud and petty that he won't let WWX speak his mind, instead he remains silent and listens. Many others would not.
He then again, despite probably not being in full strength since the coma and definitely not from all the fighting he's already done and without spiritual power, charges in with killing force to protect people when Su She breaks the barrier into the cave and the fierce corpses attack a again. Though this clearly comes with a prise as he afterwards coughs up a lot of blood and needs to mediate to regulate his breathing (and since LWJ is willing to give him spiritual energy, I have a feeling it's a tad worse than he wants to tell, but since his core is still sealed off, LWJ giving him qi would not help anyway, as LQR states himself).
Now to the aftermath of Guanyin Temple. He asks LXC what's the matter with him and LXC says he doesn't want to talk about it. LQR could press him, he probably could force him to tell him, but he doesn't. Yes he is angry, but the novel also declares that "both were now sources of worry" and it is after also saying that "neither of these two previously flawless pupils would heed him anymore", but I don't think it's just about smudged reputation or control that has him worried. I do believe he is genuinely worried that LXC and LWJ have thrown away their lives. The way he speaks and the way he's irritated with the situation shows signs of someone who acts with anger when stressed (similar to JC). I'm not saying this is the best way to react, but it is a part of our fight or flight reaction. We also can't forget that he did see his brother throw away his life due to an impulse decision and breaking the rules, a life that seems to have been generally happy before that.
And to end it all, after the family banquet:
"Wei Wuxian stroked his chin. If that was the case, they couldn’t blame Lan Qiren for punishing them like this. The man loathed wickedness in all forms. In fact, to be copying texts while doing handstands…they were getting off pretty light."
This is the juniors getting punished for going night-hunting with Wen Ning and if WWX thinks they're getting off pretty lightly, then they most likely are. To me this shows that although LQR adds rules and follows them, he does know there is a degree to them. He knows Wen Ning wouldn't hurt the juniors and that he isn't really evil or bad, but the rules state they shouldn't spend time with him, so he has to punish them, so he does so in a way that clearly is a punishment, but also not as harsh as it technically should be.
This became a long post. All in all, Lan Qiren is more than anger and strictness. He does not lack compassion, he does care about his nephews and I think people forget everything he has gone through and accomplished and that he deserves some more love and recognition (and not to only being the butt of the joke).

Okay but the royal au where WWX gives birth in prison. By sheer shit luck, or the stress of the pregnancy, or a mistake/'mistake' during delivery, A-Yuan is stillborn - but with golden eyes, with the Lan mouth; it couldn't be more obvious whose child he is.
WWX has just barely been hanging on this whole time and upon hearing that his A-Yuan, his baby is dead, he just goes catatonic. He won't respond to anyone, to anything, won't move - just stares blankly into space.
LWJ gets the news that his disgraced consort has given birth - to a stillborn son, A-Yuan, with the Lan golden eyes and the Lan mouth, and while physically well, WWX hasn't said a word or moved since he was told that his son - their son - was dead.
Immediately he rushes down. Part of him hopes that WWX will respond to him, but most of him knows better. And sure enough, WWX just stares through him. He's been cleaned and is recovering physically - but fine, LWJ can work with that. Their son is dead, but WWX is still alive. He's just in shock. It'll pass, and LWJ can make amends, and they can try again.
A-Yuan is buried with all the honours of a crown prince, laid in his grave by the Emperor's own hands, incense and paper offerings burned for him so that he might be cared for in the afterlife. In all this time, the only times LWJ has touched his son was when he was in the swaddling that became his funeral shroud, or in his coffin.
LWJ has WWX moved to the Empress' chambers and cared for, and after a few days have passed with no change, sends for JYL and JWY in hopes he'll respond to their voices.
It's a very near thing, but JWY does not, in fact, gut the Emperor for having the gall to mistreat his brother into this state and then summon JWY to try to help him make amends. JYL is contemplating assassination, but focuses her efforts on the immediate crisis, the job that is productive:
That it has been weeks since WWX gave birth, and in all that time, he has not moved, spoken, or responded to anything or anyone around him. But he might respond to his foster didi, to his foster jiejie who he loved so much.
At first they try to call him out of his catatonia, holding his hands and talking to him. Won't he greet his siblings? His jiejie is here, she's come all this way to visit her Xianxian. And A-Cheng is here too, he's missed him, Lotus Pier just isn't the same without his endless troublemaking.
(If, privately, individually, Jiang Cheng and LWJ each offer to get WWX away from LWJ, spirit him away or divorce him and make it so that WWX never has to see LWJ again, that's fine, that's their own business)
It switches to pleading, Xianxian, you're scaring me.
Wei Wuxian, you're making jiejie cry, damn you, say something, do something, even blink, or I'll -
Wei Ying, please. Even if it's just to say get lost, say something. It's alright if you hate me, as long as you respond. You don't have to see me ever again, you just have to say it.
The Emperor refuses to take another consort until WWX wakes and tells him to himself.
(how this ends is a big ?????. WWX might conveniently die during the night, clearing the way for a new consort, or mysteriously disappear around the same time a room in Lotus Pier becomes closed to all but the Jiangs and a couple of servants. Or WWX might wake up and refuse to speak to LWJ ever again - he becomes the first case of an imperial divorce where the consort made it out still honoured.)
(And yes, the pleading part was meant to be JYL, JWY, and LWJ respectively. Only JYL still calls him Xianxian, and JWY can't bring himself to threaten to break WWX's legs.)
Oof.
I'm just picturing WWX having a massive break down after weeks or months of nothing. Maybe they take him to the babies grave and he starts screaming and wailing and cursing at all of them.

okay modern-day au with the MDZS characters, but make it a ghost-hunter au because it's been rattling around in my head for a while.
the unlikely four-man squad starting: wwx, jc, nhs, and lwj.
wei wuxian -
the unofficial leader of the group made it after a night of drinking and eating snacks with jc & nhs where he brought it up and they all went "sure why not".
wwx is the dude who always has something funny to say and jc is always ready to throw a response that others will quote or make fan art of.
makes a lot of equipment since he likes making things, and tinkering with whatever they do own to make it even better.
even better meaning it'll annoy the living hell out of jc.
is a bit of a spirit magnet. this is both good, and dangerous due to nhs's sensitivity to spirits.
he picks the places that the group will go to and is always ready to drop extra history of the place at the worst time.
aka the things, a ghost or demon might have done to a living person.
wwx : SO! it was in this very room that this one dude died [very horrible death]. jc is very much on the side of team, "stop talking before you freak out nhs anymore than he already is."
may or may not have talked lwj into joining their group. he may or may not also tease lwj any chance he gets.
jiang cheng -
jc is the voice of reason on the team. for every three ideas wwx has, jc has four ready in response of why, no, and absolutely not.
in charge of finding places to stay, and finding local shops in the area to interview folks.
probably hates the sound of the spirit box.
jc very much seemed the one whose not so easily startled when something happens, and usually has a logical explanation to keep himself and others calm.
jc can repel spirits to a small degree, the zone is about a 5mm radius around his person and those near him are safe and unaffected by the spirits. he isn't aware of this skill.
the designated driver of the group. can read a map, but uses the GPS that was gifted to him.
He's also the one who comments on the layout of everywhere they visit because if nobody is going to mention how POORLY thought out these old haunted buildings are. he will bring it up.
"these blueprints fucking suck. i would come back to haunt this place and the son of a bitch who made it if i died here." - jc
nie huaisang -
nhs joined the group because what's more fun than doing something with your friends after doing things you do not want to do.
poor nhs.
nhs is very much the sort of guy in the group who is like "i know a guy, who knows a guy and that guy knows something really interesting about this place."
wwx and jc never ask how nhs knows people or the more cryptic things about the building because nhs's only response was "the ghosts told me" in the most serious voice and they've been too scared to bring the question up again.
how and what nhs knows can be for nhs to know only.
wishes that he wasn't the one left alone in an area all by himself without the lights on, a mag light, a radio, and a spirit box.
spirits like the little guy, but nhs does not care much for them.
the one who's the most sensitive to spirits. but lwj is helping him with training to better resist the push & pull from spirits.
lwj and nhs are an unlikely duo when working together and outside of ghost hunting. the two know one another prior to ghost hunting due to their families, but never really interacted much more than was needed of them.
lan wangji -
the fourth member of the group! a surprising addition to the ones who know him and a fan favorite.
lwj is good with the equipment that they use and watching cameras when at base camp.
his family has knowledge of spirits, how to handle them, bring them peace, and help them crossover.
lwj makes sure that the group is well-protected and safe if the location is truly dangerous to them. wwx is always happy to show off whatever little charm (sometimes a little rabbit is often doodled on the charms!!) or a talisman lwj has made for the group.
he helps to round the group out, and fans enjoy how monotone he sounds and how unaffected he seems by the supernatural occurrences happening.
lwj is often paired with wwx when the group splits up into pairs. fans seem to enjoy their interactions, especially seeing how close the two of them become since lwj is very much still lwj.
lwj finds himself impressed with the group as a whole, everyone works well with one another, and their personalities mesh well.
when on break from ghost hunting wwx gifts lwj two rabbits, he will often post pictures of them online or send pictures of them into the ghost hunting group chat. the rabbits are spoiled rotten, most of it is lwj, but jc is also the next biggest spoiler of the rabbits with wwx and nhs being tied.

[platonic #chengyao modern, family]
where aroace!JC decide to take care of jl when the couple and his parents die tragically in an accident. jgs seem rather satisfied in a way, he's getting too old to take care of an infant (a nanny would probably have done it), while mdm jin seems a bit unsure. "Will you be able to support jl?", "Are you eventually going to get married?", "You know, it would be good for jl (and you) not to bring him up alone", "You cannot stay alone forever, I can help you if you need it".
But eventually, she does accept to let jc keep jl with him. Conditions are rather simple: being able to see their grandchild at least once a month and making sure jl isn't missing anything important to his growth.
jc is also given money each month, but he feels a bit awkward using it for himself, so he uses it for everything related to jl needs (and puts some on the side so he can enter a good school without him needing to ask for the money).
but raising jl alone /is/ hard, especially with college, the still rather recent death of his family and while also missing wwx who had disappeared months ago without leaving many traces behind other than an apology for leaving. He's still worried his brother got into some serious problems.
jc is seriously weighing the pros and cons of leaving college to work full time when he receives the visit of someone. The red dot between his brows gives him a good idea of which family he is from (it's the same one he makes sure jl is also wearing) but his memory fails him to really remember who he is (his near-constant anxiety has been messing with his memory too). "Jin Guangyao" smiles the man, waiting patiently as jc's eyes roam his face, clearly searching in his memory.
Then it finally lands. jzx half-brother! He also vaguely remembers jgy being at the nie brother's house at the same time as he was to meet with nhs (he wonders slightly how nhs is doing, they haven't talked in a while). he quickly let the man in, offering him something to drink ("Hope the tea is to your taste" he says, knowing the jin's often prefer expensive teas rather than the cheap ones he can afford).
He's a bit anxious, sitting on his side of the table with jl in his arm, drinking his milk. Why did jgy suddenly want to meet at /his/ cheap apartment (most not be the greatest look on him, he /could/ afford better with the money the jin send him).
jgy is quick to somewhat reassure him, he simply wanted to meet his nephew too (jc wondered why he couldn't have done so when he was visiting jgs and mdm jin, but don't ask) they chat a bit, jgy trying to learn a bit about how jl is doing and how jc is managing everything. they talk until close to dinner, jc asking if he wants to stay for dinner (more out of courtesy than because he can afford to feed another grown man). With a smile, jgy (thankfully) declined, saying he doesn't want to bother him.
This visit leaves jc anxious. sure he had managed to convince jgs and mdm jin to let him take care of jl, but what if jgy now wanted to take jl in. sure, according to jgy own words, he was not as close to jzx and jc was with jyl, but he still had a good relationship with him and wanted to also be part of his brother's son life.
the thought fills jc with fear. jl is his /one and only/ family left, he doesn't know if he would be able to continue without this little ray of sunshine around. jc is not stupid, he's pretty sure jgy has more than enough money to take care of himself and a growing child. jc needs to rely on the money given to him to pay for what jl needs without starving himself to do so.
after that, jgy always messages him before coming, wanting to make sure he doesn't bother them. the man is always nice and patient with him, even though his nearly constant smiling face makes jc uncomfortable and anxious at times (sometimes it just looks a bit... off).
but everything seems alright, nothing shows him that jgy actually wants to take jl away from him. He never comments on the fact that jl always has the rather nice and good stuff, while jc is still wearing clothes he already had for years and eating cheap food.
though, he does show care for more than jl. "You look tired today, did you study all night? I can look over jl while you sleep a bit" (he did study all night and then worked all day), "Did you eat properly? You seem a bit thinner" (his hours were cut and he had to reduce grocery for himself), "Finals are coming right? Do you need some help to study? I know how hard it can get" (finals are coming too quickly).
It takes time, but eventually, jc gets used to jgy being over and helping around a bit. He gets to learn a bit more about jgy (He was raised poor, hence why he seems to know so well what jc is going through and doesn't judge and help around instead).
two years go by rather quickly like this, leading to jc graduating and looking for a stable job (maybe he'll finally be able to have a stable salary and a better place, he already move to somewhere more decent, but it's still not the best).
by that time, jgy is already part of the routine he has, but also the top person on the list of people to contact if he ever needs help. He's also the only jin he actually feels comfortable being more himself around, since he already understood jgy wasn't there to find fault.
"mdm jin wonders if you have had someone in your heart recently" points out jgy one time as they have dinner at his place, jl sleeping near them.
The question immediately makes jc tense, which makes jgy smile fall a bit (jc pointed out he doesn't always need to force a smile on his face when he's with him).
jgy quickly wonder if he asked something too personal, as he tried asking simply because the rare times he does meet with mdm jin, she would ask about it ("You seem close to jc, aren't you? Did he finally started dating?")
He had wondered a bit too, since he had never seen jc with anyone else before. But there was also never a trace of anyone else at the young man's house, apart from his own frequent visit. With how much jc was working and studying, it felt like he never would have had the time for dating.
"You don't need to-"
"Will she take away a-ling if I don't find someone?" asked jc, sounding a weird mix of tired, scared and anxious. The man looked as though needing to date someone would be an annoying task, rather than something pleasant.
"No?" he says, more as a question since he wonders where jc took this, "I think she just worries that you cut yourself from meeting people so you can take care of a-ling" he replies.
jc doesn't seem convinced. mdm jin had many times brought back the subject, and it had also included how it would probably be better if jl had two parents.
"And what if I don't want to date? What if I /never/ wanted to date?" jc asks, sounding a bit angrier at that, because it was not the first time someone was trying to force something on him. Was it really /that/ weird that he had never wanted to date anyone? That he had never fallen in love before? Many were raised with only one parent without a problem, was it so bad for him to do it like this too?
jgy seemed a bit taken aback, as he had not expected this reaction from jc. the younger man quickly realised he had vented his anger on the wrong person, he could see jgy wasn't meaning anything bad.+
"S-sorry, I didn't mean to vent on you, I am just... tired of being asked all the time" he quickly apologised, looking at his tea instead of jgy.
jgy soft smile quickly came back, trying to sound reassuring "It is alright not to want to date, I personally just wanted to make sure you weren't privating yourself if you wanted one".
He was rather happy when he saw tension leaving his shoulders, his face a bit more relaxed too. a more comfortable silence settled down, the both of them slowly sipping the tea. yet, jgy couldn't stop thinking about the way he had said it.
"You never wanted to date?" he asked. he didn't push when jc didn't immediately answer, before shaking his head. "No... is it that weird? I just... never felt like that for anyone" he finally confessed.
jgy was the second person he ever told. He sure hoped he would be as understanding as wwx (though maybe not as confused as the teen had been, it had been quite the night, trying to explain his lack of attraction, but in the end, wwx understood and accepted it).
"Not weird, I think one of my friends is similar to you" admitted jgy, clearly thinking about it. "he did try dating, but he said he doesn't feel anything for his partner so he broke up and never did it again".
jc was a bit curious about who it was, wondering if talking to him would make him encounter someone who /understands/ him really. "Do you want to date?" jc ended up asking after a while. He had also noticed the lack of anyone else living here (other than the occasional visit from his best friends he seemed to have).
"I think I've had enough the last time, I'll probably wait a bit before doing it again, didn't end very well, to be honest".
The rest of the night went with jc talking about how he feels about all this, while jgy ended up telling some story of his rather not-so-good dating life. They came out of this night a bit closer, knowing that the other wouldn't judge on anything, even this.
As time went by they only grew closer. Even if jc didn't have a wife, jl ended up growing up with two parental figures around him, as jgy was often around.
at some point, jc ended up simply moving in with jgy, as it was easier than always doing the travelling between their houses. It was also easier to take care of jl, as they wouldn't need to drop him all the time. Everything and everyone was in the same house now, much easier.
mdm jin did seem a bit curious, but seeing how both men were seriously taking care of jl without a problem she never commented on it (she still believed maybe one day they would marry someone). at some point (when jl was entering his late childhood), jc did wonder if jgy wanted to date "I wouldn't want to be in the way".
but jgy had admitted this was enough for him. He had something he could call a family (even if a bit unusual) and didn't feel the need for romance. (though he did promise to tell him if he ever felt the want to).
jc was indeed happy himself like this. It was really nice to have someone else he could call family in a way.
===
(I had a sudden want for platonic chengyao taking care of jl, but also aroace!JC finding someone who accepts and understands him)

i would love to hear more about mdzs bodyswap!
oh gosh i fully could not remember what this was till i opened it but ;A; it is actually one of the ones i most want to finish some day
the premise was essentially that wwx gets caught in an array (protecting one of the juniors? i think?) when they're out on a nighthunt specifically bc Jiang Cheng is visiting the CR (while LXC is still in seclusion) for Sect Leader Business™ and the array swaps mxy!wwx with 16 yo wwx, so 16 yr old wwx is chilling in the CR while everyone tries to keep The Horrors of His Future/past from him and then he bumps into JC anyway and it all falls apart. i think this was actually a yunmeng bro reconciliation fic but I am. not totally clear on how
“Lan Zhan snuck up on me here, too,” Wei Wuxian says after a little bit. “Do I—does your Wei-qianbei come out here?” “Sometimes,” Sizhui answers. “Or he’ll go to the rabbit meadow. Lately he’s liked the lotus pond he built with Hanguang-jun.” The noise that Wei Wuxian makes might be acknowledgment or just the cut-off sound of his own grief and frustration. It doesn’t seem fair, that the universe should drag him here to the future only to show him all the things he loses. Sizhui isn’t sure that what he has in this life means enough to make up for it; at this age, Wei-qianbei had never met a-Yuan. Did he even know he loved Hanguang-jun?
send me a wip name + i’ll share a bit

All the Things We’ll Leave Behind: ch 29, pt 4
Previously
~
“Well, Wangji ran off into the woods a few hours ago—chasing something—and jyl didn’t have shoes, so we couldn’t chase after him.”
“Uh huh…” wwx sighed, shaking his head slightly. Yup, this was how it was for young people, wasn’t it? He could remember similarly stupid stories from his own wild days—and a few from his more recent, calmer ones—although usually he had been the one fucking things up. Sometimes he’d been shit-faced drunk, more often he’d been completely sober and stupid, thinking himself invincible. Honestly… he still kinda thought of himself like that. Sure, he’d learned his lesson on a few fronts, but for the most part… Nah, he might be calmer, wiser, but he was still a little shit inside, just waiting for a chance to stir things up.
It really was unfortunate that his company was so damn popular, it left him much too little time to play. Perhaps now, with a mate waiting for him… He definitely had enough money to retire, or at least take a step back and let someone else—like the Luo girl—start to take over for him…
“And she didn’t have her phone—well, she did have it, her brother brought it to her—but she left it at the restaurant, so we had to go back, and then we ended up recruiting all these teens to help find Wangji.”
“How in the world did you convince teenagers to help you?” wwx asked, twisting on his chair as he drank his coffee. “Teenagers aren’t usually that cooperative—not the ones I know, anyways.” He smiled, thinking back to all the horrible things he’d done as a teen. They still told stories about him in Yunmeng. Some of the older folks still bolted when they saw him coming. Others pulled him over for a lecture about some decades old gripe, but even that was still amusing, even if he generally found himself volunteering to somehow make it up to them. He’d repaired a lot of random shit around town, although he’d never been able to figure out why exactly everyone was always asking him to fix shit? He also wasn’t sure how there were still so many people he had wronged and not made nice with? It always seemed like there were new people complaining to him, whenever he visited. It was actually a bit odd…
“They were treating it as a friendship run. They were actually creepily eager to help… but anyways, then jyl’s heat came—”
wwx grunted in acknowledgement, immediately regretting it when he inhaled his coffee and ended up spluttering liquid everywhere, including on his last clean shirt. Awesome.
“Fuck,” he hissed as jzxuan continued rambling about their night. He grabbed a napkin and dabbed at the spot, not that it did any good. Fuck. Wait. “Did you just say you spent the last few hours bringing rabbits into my house?” he didn’t quite scream into the phone.
“Yep.”
wwx blinked into space. His assistant had reappeared at the door and was giving him a look that told him he looked about as shocked as he felt. “How many?”
“I dunno,” jzxuan said. “At least three.”
“It took you several hours to bring three rabbits into my house?”
“No, it took us several hours to bring a few dozen bunnies into your house.”
“Then why did you say three?” wwx asked incredulously. What even?

Restaurant AU
Need a Xicheng AU where JC becomes a food critic, cause after his jiejies death he is more or less unconsciously searching for the taste of her cooking around the world but it never tastes quite right.
Luckily for him, he does get to see -and taste -a lot cause his overt criticism may be harsh but his opinions are usually fair and well respected. Thus he climbs up the ladder quite fast and is soon a world star critic.
LXC is the owner of a well known restaurant, that serves seemingly bland but actually quite flavourful and rich dishes. And while he doesn’t like to brag, he knows his food is good and so far no food critic has come out with a frown on their face… until JC
Saying he is offended and at loss for words isn’t even half of it. Thus he invites JC back again and again in hopes to get his usually 5/5 stars.
JC on the other hand doesn’t understand what the big deal is??? Most chefs are on their knees sobbing, when he even takes the time to eat there, let alone gives them a rating over 2/5 stars? A rating of 4.5/5 stars is basically unheard of. So he constantly seems dismissive and annoyed by LXC.
LXC actually though starts getting frustrated and angry after a couple of time,at least for his temper. So much so that the other waiters etc. are getting concerned for LXC. They have never seen him like this.
But LXC is determined! He is gonna get that critic! Wait no! The last half star! He is gonna get the last half star!! Not the critic himself? Haha why would he- who would even say- that’s not at all what he wanted to say …hahah! A suck of toun- ah ah A slip of the tongue really! Haha yeaaaah.
Bonus: WWX is JC’s manager, who decides to tag along after the third time, cause surly his grumpy brother isn’t just gonna visit a restaurant, cause ‘they asked nicely’ and ‘for the food’ right? (That makes no sense WWX?!? Why else would someone visit a restaurant?!? Oh, just shut up.) Anyway, he ends up flirting with their waiter LWJ.
Side note this prompt would also work for fengqing! With MQ being the critic!

making it a separate post because i’d talk forever and it’s annoying to talk forever in the replies--
gnomeicecream replied to this post:
Makes me wonder if Lan Zhan isn't 'remember that time you thought my boyfriend was evil and nearly whipped me to death? I do' then deliberately not helping. He was left alone for what, three years after?
oh dear, now that's material for a loooooong conversation i'm not sure i'm qualified for, but like. i don't think lwj blames lxc for his punishment!
considering what the punishment is for, he kind of got off lightly; on top of that, lwj says in the banquet extra that "during the years i spent in seclusion, brother would always come visit me and talk to me sincerely", implying that now that the situation is reversed, he can't do the same. he has to feel at least a bit regretful/conflicted about that.
the thing that irks me is that... lxc is just a forever afterthought. this line i just quoted is from literally a three lines long post-coital conversation that happens and fizzes out quickly (wwx then doesn’t reply and they just go to sleep). another occasion lxc is mentioned in the extra is at the beginning of part 2, in which wgxn can’t try fucking while lwj’s doing handstands because “lwj has to visit his brother”. i know the book is about wgxn and the extras are even more so -- just a chance for the readers to bask in their adorable life together -- but from my pov (i don’t really care about wgxn’s adorable life together and i’m heartbroken about xiyao) it’s just... sad.
it’s been a while since i’ve read the chapters earlier than the one with the post-burial mounds lotus pier jgy haters conference, so i don’t remember all instances of the gusu twin jades interacting, but i can’t help but think that the whole jgy business kind of... changed it in a way that i’m not sure is salvageable. what i mean is that after lwj realized wwx is back, he sort of -- yeeted him on the very top of his priority list, and forgot everything and everyone else in the process, well, save for lsz because he’s wwx’s Kid Buddy From The Burial Mounds. he trusts and supports wwx completely, even if he has no real empirical reason for it -- wwx says jgy killed nmj, so jgy killed nmj, duh. the jades have their thing with silent communication, but i don’t remember lwj even showing that he’s in any way concerned with how lxc might feel about this.
in the guanyin temple as well -- i believe they do it out of concern for lxc, but i can’t help but feel bitter when wgxn tell lxc not to talk to jgy, not to believe him and so on, when they don’t want jgy to Tangle LXC In His Web Of Lies Again. i don’t know how to put it, but it’s like -- lxc isn’t a full person in this situation? they sort of assume he’s been tricked by jgy. they treat him almost like a child who doesn’t know better, when he says it himself that it’s not that he didn’t know jgy was up to No Good, he just trusted that he was doing it because he had no other choice. no thought is given to this revelation! jgy is bad, jgy is an excellent actor and a skilled manipulator, so it’s best to just not let him talk to lxc at all.
i think that at this point, lwj doesn’t understand lxc at all. i’m not sure whether he’s aware of this, so focused on wwx. probably not. but before he leaves, he doesn’t do anything to even show lxc... anything, really? i’ll be there for you, brother? i don’t understand, but i feel your pain? anything else, just anything! but there’s nothing. and by the time lxc is mentioned next time, it’s in the context of lwj not trying to help him because “it would be fruitless either way”. doesn’t that sound just fucking bleak.
because here, i feel, is the source of the problem, lxc’s crown of the most tragic elder sibling: his little brother doesn’t even know how to help him. there’s nothing he thinks he can do in this situation. does he even have anything to say about jgy, or his relationship with lxc? does he have anything to say about how his beloved helped bring him down? is he sorry about that, does he feel bad that lxc can’t or doesn’t want to face the world?
we just don’t know dot gif.
we do know, though, that at the end of the novel wangxian agree that they’ll tell lxc the truth -- the horrible truth that might make lxc, gasp! realize new things about his friend -- when he asks. which is honestly... well, i think you can guess how i feel about it.
it’s funny, though -- we talk a lot about the yunmeng bros’ reconciliation, is it possible or not, etc, etc, even though through jin ling all things are possible so jot it down. the fact that jl stubbornly points out that jc clearly wanted to say something to wwx -- this, i think, is a hint that they will eventually talk. or at least it would be in a world that i think would make sense; in a world where wwx has relationships other than lwj and the juniors. what should be debated more, i think, is the relationship between the lan brothers. the problem of lxc is often glossed over in fics; of course he leaves seclusion and attends wgxn’s wedding as their first and main shipper&supporter, and of course he finds peace, whatever the fuck it is. but does he really? i think lxc “finding peace” primarily should mean him figuring out what he wants as a person, individual, not “sect leader lan” or “lwj’s big brother”, but he, lan huan courtesy xichen. and i think that one of these things could be... understanding. and i don’t know if lwj can offer him that tbh

I've been reading through your mdzs meta (hope that's not too weird! I've loved your different takes on a lot of things!) And I was struck by the line "Jyl makes a choice (however coerced, but that can be another convo) to marry into the Jin" in post /690494124992937984. I never really got behind the ~romance~ of jyl/jzxn but I've only seen one other meta saying maybe they werent in love and tbh I find that idea fascinating for all that it implies
XuanLi is such an interesting couple in that we only learn about them through flashback and they’re mostly used by both the story and most of the people in the story to talk about the tragedy of their doomed lives rather than who they were as people. Now, I have no doubt they loved each other in the course of their very short marriage, as Jin Zixuan is said to confide in Jiang Yanli for everything, to the point of it leading to his death in the story. He is also willing to put aside his animosity towards Wei Wuxian to invite him to his son’s one-month celebration (or 100-day celebration? whichever one) because it would make his wife happy. Jiang Yanli also loves him, as she’s excited at the reinstating of her wedding when she comes to show off her wedding dress in that scene lacking self-awareness, and she genuinely mourns jzx’s death and cannot tell wwx in truth that she forgives him for his hand in killing her husband. However, how they got there? 🤷🏽‍♀️
Jk, I believe it’s in character for jyl to have given jzx another chance to prove himself to her after the debacle of the soup incident during the sunshot campaign that turned her off of him completely. Yet, mxtx does not write jyl softening towards jzx again. Instead, we get these scenes: 1) Madam Jin pressuring a reluctant jyl to spend alone time with jzx during the Phoenix Mountain hunt, who then chooses to leave the scene with wwx despite jzx confessing that actually, it was he who wanted to court her on his own, 2) Jiang Cheng, who before the ssc was moved to violence at any slight jzx visited upon his sister, suddenly deciding that jzx’s past (and current if we count him losing his temper at the hunt) actions towards jyl “don’t matter” because “she likes him, so what can we do 🤷🏻” conveniently as everyone is trying to curry favor from the Jin, and 3) jyl, herself, in every flashback after the soup incident but before the reinstatement of the engagement being shown to be reluctant to be in jzx’s presence or even discuss her feelings about him.
So while I don’t think their marriage was a loveless sham put together purely for politics, and while the couple actually do seem to hold genuine affection for each other in the short time they actually get to be a couple, the lead-up to their marriage after the war is posited as a political move on the part of others around them using their real past (for jyl) and present (for jzx) affections for each other to pretend as if the match was for the couple’s benefit and not for the others. If, theoretically, jyl had decided she didn’t want to marry jzx after all, I think those other characters still would have pressured her into it. On the other hand, if the story had been written that way, I don’t think wwx would have had the hangup of killing his shijie’s “beloved husband,” so we lose a plotpoint there.

whatever you do never think about the fact that all these years jiang cheng never got dogs back in lotus pier regardless of the fact that wwx was ‘dead’
and by all means never think about jc finally getting dogs after he somewhat has a reconciliation with wwx after everything goes down bc he realises wwx will never come back to stay at lotus pier with him so there’s no longer any reason for there not to be dogs, like idk my dudes just don’t think abt jc wanting his family so badly then realising he’ll never properly get them back so he just says fuck it and gets a puppy friend
