Jane and Dr. Fai agreed to meet for lunch before their Disney movie not-a-date. Jane arrived at the restaurant first, early as always. Luckily, she didn’t have to sit alone with her thoughts for too long before Dr. Fai walked through the door. It took Jane a second to even recognize her without her white lab coat. She was wearing a floral sundress, red lipstick, and had curled her hair.

Jane could hear Tan’s teasing voice in her head. “She’s dressed for a daaaate.”

Suddenly Jane felt self-conscious. Was she underdressed? She glanced down at her outfit. No, this was her nicest pair of jeans. Plus, she was wearing heels. And her blouse was made of lace.

Wait a second.

Was she dressed for a date?

There was no time to ponder this, however, because Dr. Fai had made her way over to the table. Jane shot to her feet, banging her knee on the table leg in the process.

Pain shot through her leg.

What the fuck?

Why did she stand? That was definitely date behavior.

Jane attempted to turn her grimace of pain into a smile. “Hi, Dr. Fai. It’s great to see you again.”

“Please, just call me Fai. Is your knee okay? That looked like it hurt.”

“Didn’t hurt at all!” Jane lied, sitting back down. She picked up her menu, desperate to change the subject. “Have you been here before?”

“Been meaning to but haven’t had the chance yet. They keep me pretty busy over at the hospital. What about you?”

“I came here with Tan about a month ago, right after it opened.”

“Tan…that’s the guy you were with the other day at the hospital, right? Is he…” Fai seemed to hesitate. “Is he your boyfriend?”

“No, no, definitely not,” Jane said with a laugh. “He’s just a friend. I don’t have a boyfriend. I’m single.”

The word “single” felt strange on her lips. But now was definitely not the time to think about Pued.

“Gotcha,” Fai said.

Jane pretended she didn’t notice the relief in her eyes. “What about you? Do you have a boyfriend?”

Now it was Fai’s turn to laugh. “No, no boyfriend.”

It was impossible not to notice the emphasis she put on boy.

“A girlfriend?” Jane asked, a part of her desperately praying Fai would say yes. If she said yes, then that would prove Tan’s date theory wrong once and for all.

“Unfortunately, no,” Fai replied, her eyes locking with Jane’s. “No girlfriend.”

Fai had a very intense gaze, almost too intense. Jane was finding it extremely difficult to look away from her. She needed to stop staring and say something. Anything. But nothing was coming to her. Her mind had gone strangely blank. What even were words?

Fai really was so pretty. Her hair looked so nice like this.

Hey! Those were words. That was something she could say. Compliments were always good, right? But wait, wouldn’t that sound like she was flirting, if she complimented Fai’s appearance immediately after Fai had told her she didn’t have a girlfriend? Yes, it would definitely sound like flirting. She needed to think of something else to say…

“You two ready to order?” came the voice of the server, sounding oddly far away.

Jane gave a jolt, startled. She’d forgotten where they even were. Judging from the slightly dazed expression on Fai’s face, she had to.

The server took their orders and left. Jane and Fai were left once again sitting in silence, but this time neither of them was looking at the other. Jane fiddled with the clasp of her necklace. Fai folded up her straw wrapper.

Well.

This was awkward.

SAY SOMETHING! Jane’s brain screamed.

Why was she suddenly so horrible at making small talk? When had she become such a disaster? How much longer were they going to have to sit here in this painful silence? She glanced down at her phone. What time did the Disney marathon start again?

The Disney marathon! Of course!

“Do you know which films they’re showing?” Jane asked, relieved that her brain had finally remembered how to make conversation.

Fai glanced up, relief in her eyes, no doubt just as happy as Jane was that the silence had been broken. Yeah, I do!” she said. “It’s Snow White, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. I think there might be one or two others. Can’t remember what they are.

“Oooh, I hope it’s Aladdin. Or Mulan. Or Sleeping Beauty.” Jane laughed. “Who am I kidding? I love them all.” She took a sip of her water. “The Little Mermaid is my favorite though. What about you?”

“It’s The Little Mermaid for me as well,” Fai said. “I literally wore out my VHS tape of it when I was a kid from watching it so many times.”

“Oh my god, same,” Jane said. “And I had such a crush on Prince Eric.”

“I had crush on Ariel. Before I was even old enough to know that girls could have crushes on girls. I’d watch the movie on repeat just to look at her.”

Jane tried to decide how to reply to this. She didn’t want Fai to think she had any problem with her sexual orientation, but she also didn’t want to lead her on, to make her think that there was anything going on here besides a blossoming friendship.

“So you’re into redheads?” she teased.

Casual and friendly. Nailed it.

Tan’s voice once again filled her head. “You know your tone sounded super flirty, right?”

Imaginary Tan really needed to keep his opinions to himself.

Fai smiled. “I’m not really picky when it comes to hair colors. A pretty girl is a pretty girl, you know?”

That intense gaze was back…

It was time to change the subject.

“Bunn loaned me The Little Mermaid book back when we were kids and it broke my heart,” she said. “I was not expecting it to end so tragically.”

Fai looked at her blankly. “The book doesn’t have a happy ending?”

“You haven’t read it? Oh my god, I’m going to have steal Bunn’s copy back from him and loan it to you. You can’t claim to be a fan of The Little Mermaid if you haven’t read the book, Fai.”

“I’ll read anything you want me to, Jane,” Fai murmured.

Jane’s heart skipped a beat.

Shit.

Hunger Games Characters I picture in Disney Characters.

Katniss I Put her with Merida ( Brave) Belle ( BATB) Meg ( Hurcules) Elsa (Frozen).

Why Merida. Well shes good with the bow and arrow ( I actually haven’t seen Brave fully so I don’t know much about her).

Belle. Both are strong willed women Willing to do anything for family. Both have no choice but to stay where they are “captured” both are like if I have a will to live through this I’m not gonna go down without a fight. Both have 2 men after their hearts, Both know how to survive on their own if needed. She learned to fall in love with a beast.

Meg. This is more the love side for Katniss. The Song I wont say I’m in love is basically Katniss’s theme song. Like she wont admit it she loves Peeta but girl we all know..

Elsa. In a way Katniss did shut out Prim to protect her. She didn’t want to hurt her sister strong willed to protect her sister at all cost. Plus I know Cinna is to credit for this but her mockingjay outfit *Chefs kiss* plus they wear their hair the same.

Peeta. Hercules Kristoff ( Frozen) Kovu ( Lion King 2) The Beast (BATB)

Hercules he’s strong. But he literally gave up everything for love. Which is so Peeta.

Kristoff. Okay this one both have such a charm that attracts everyone. Tho both have obessions and flaws So they are a bit of fixer uppers. But both are somewhat accpecting to the fact I will wait until you make your choice. Both have kind and sweet hearts. Both are kultzy but pull it off like a champ. ( And Katniss didn’t fall in love with a man she just met. They knew each other since the age of 5) But Never truely met until the games.

Kovu. Hes the sexiest damn thing. In Disney characters I freaking swear He has a way with his words. Charming. Loyal tho. He is willing to go against his families ( whos kinda a bunch of ya know bad guys) for Love and whats right. So Peeta.

The Beast. This is Peeta in Hijacked Form ( Some parts). Besides the totally Hitting on Belle part. We all know deep down the love he had for Katniss never left. He never stopped loving her. Not based on how good she looked but who she is. Plus A Kiss broke the spell. Also he had a bit of charm in his hijacking but so much anger and Katniss was the only one who could truely break him outta it. Also I was hoping that He would of said so you came to look at the beast have you.

Finnick King Triton ( Little Mermaid) Maui ( Moana) Flynn Rider ( Tangled) Aladdin.

Kin g Triton. Well for that Trident comes in handy. ( The king is kinda a jerk why are most fathers in disney movies total jerks I’ll never know) But I hope that Finnicks son at least knows what a fork is compaired to a freaking trident ( and doesn’t use it as a hair brush) man that was stupid. Both are basically the big shot of where they live. Both love water live near or in water... ( What they hell do they eat under the sea ?)

Maui. Okay Finnick is a bit of a show off a little. Not his fault hes so damn good looking. Both have that sarcasm that makes you laugh but your like oh my god please stop. Both have there if Finnick had a song It would be your welcome. But still so much we never know about them both.

Flynn Rider. Okay well both just have the certain personality that is strangely Alike. Both know how to fight if needed. Both are like well the ladies are okay but not intrested until they find the one.. Both have their charm. ( Plus I love Flynn rider).

Aladdin. We know that Finnick has a huge part of him he never opened up. Before when he spilled what the real price to winning is. That was not everything. There is a part that Beetee said If you knew Finnick it’s amazing he’s still with us at all. So hes been though it.

Johanna Bo Peep ( Toy Story 4) Mulan and Mulans Grand mother ( Mulan) Tiana (Princess and the Frog)

Bo Peep. From the first toy story to the 4th one Bo peep has changed a lot. ( Kinda like Johanna from after her games to who we met in Catching fire) Tho a lot of them is still there that hasn’t changed. But their will to fight. and that they dont take BS as an answer. That they both may look weak but inside them so much more then that. ( I was shocked to see Bo Peep kinda like Johanna in toy story 4). Not scared of a little fight and blood. Frankly I’d be worried that they both would try to kill someone in their sleep.

Mulan. I love in movies where the weakest person goes to the strongest like that. Totally Johanna. And they are the girl worth fighting for I see more of her in Johanna then Katniss because Johanna went from faking being weak to deadly like that. Where as katniss she didn’t hide it at all really. Plus if this wasn’t a disney movie i would of love to say what Mulan would of said when they found out shes a girl really. But both are bad ass females. Who really had no choice to go into this ( Mulan had to save her father Johanna got picked to be in the games)

Mulans Grandmother ( I didn’t realize I did this) But I Johanna’s humor she says what she wants and no damage. They don’t ruin the moment they make the moment 100 times better.

Tiana. She was totally fine not finding love ( But its disney she did) I really like her will to not give up no matter how many changes are thrown at you. and tolerting her best friend but I freaking love Charlotte She is the one who knows what to say in a moment where no one else would understand basically the girl talk that Katniss hates but we all have it in us.

Prim Repunzel ( Tangled) Baymax ( Big Hero 6) Anna ( Frozen)

Lets Ignore the fact that I brought up 2 of these lovers before to other characters

Repunzel The healing part Prim has it is in her born with it. and she has a nack of many talents. And In a way is locked up in District 12 ( But Protected by her sister)

Baymax He is the cutest thing out there. Caring knowing when you need a hand ( Like katniss) a healer ( I might of went out to look for the healer of disney). Not much of a fighter ( But I swear if you did what Hiro did if you did that to prim oh my god the fight in her but the healing will always be apart of her)

Anna. Okay I basically but Anna here because she is Elsa’s sister. Simlar hair styles but.. Both are willing to do anything for each other. Prim had a knack to see if the fence was on to see if Katniss was gonna be late coming back from hunting. Both are gental who wont hurt a fly (Unless your almost husband is a total jerk)

Effie Charlotte ( Princess and the Frog) Dory (Finding Nemo ) Yzma ( The emperors New Groove)

Charlotte. Oh my god If this isn’t effie I have no clue what is. She does stuff to get a better district. But then Truely cares about her district 12 tributes 74th Games. She would almost do anything in her power to make them on time and for her victors.

Dory Okay Effie is a bit clueless in her own little world. Telling them about the pearls lol and whitty. Effie doesn’t have short term memory loss she has I’ve been living in the capitol and this is what I know.

Yzma This is the effie we dont wanna see Frankly I am happy we didn’t see this side of her. It’s the one who gets really pissed off I’m sure it would be something else tho to see.

Cinna. Fairy God mother (Cinderella) Genie ( Aladdin) Nick ( Zootopia)

Fairy God mother. Cinnas out fits are like bibbidi bobbidi boo I make an awesome outfit for you. Also He takes good care of Katniss.( Like sent from up above) On her side beyond his end. A bit of a rebel but over all a really good guy

Genie. Cinna is like the Genie without 3 wishes. But he is there and supports Katniss fully. And just helps her out when se needs it. and Is a friend in Katniss. Basically the one she trusts first and fully,

Nick Okay this is an odd one But he rebeled from his bad guy character to help Judy ( Police officer) with a crime. Cinna helped out katniss and pretty much a rebel to go beyond to help her. To show shes the symbol of this war... To show that she should go a head fight for it all its worth. Plus I got your back making your costumes not only good looking but you wont have to worry about death yet your costumes prevent that.

Haymitch. Mushu ( Mulan) Lumiere ( BATB) Crush (Finding Nemo)

Mushu He is that reality check that Katniss and Peeta needed but also will do almost anything to protect them ( Even lying for there own good) But also oh my lordy funny.

Lumiere. It’s his carefree side where Katniss shot an apple at the gamemakers and just like oh well. That happened... Plus not playing by the capitol rules and He is just like a good mentor to Katniss and Peeta hell the best. He really wants them to try to win this thing.

Crush. Okay that turtle was the most stoned turtle I’ve met. To this day. And as for Disney Characters this might not be the most drunk but It’s one i can Find.

Gale Robin Hood Hans ( Frozen) Gaston ( BATB)

Robin hood Umm he shoots I think he hunts thats about it

Hans Not only did he confuse Anna for a love But we see his true colours too. I mean they were not even friends first but still. Like so Gale.

Gaston. He’s a hunter after his girl Katniss ( But shes already taken) Really wanted her once she was gone also is strangly after Katniss and only katniss ( when shes around) when he has plenty of takers.

Maleficent I am deeply scared of her just saying and Coin as well

But she had little control over her Frankly Katniss never trusted her at all. But like Mother Gothal we all knew she was bad going in but Coin first time Reading I said I bet you will be bad lol.

Annie Hei hei (Moana) Jane ( Tarzan)

Hei Hei ( Sorry Annie ) But kinda crazy. Kinda out of it...

Jane I have no idea why but I see this crazy girl from 4 Jane. Just going a bit crazy at everything like Jane

Wiress Clogsworth ( BATB) Okay simple very smart but Kinda out there and has a thing for clocks

Mags (Grandma from Moana) A little crazy but alright. I mean better then alright down right awesome.

Beetee Wall’e I have actually never seen this movie but I am like hell robot Beetee.

Careers Bruce and the other sharks (Finding Nemo) Scary yet the biggest idiots on the planet. Sure they get the best of best as districts go but damn who doesn’t know how to climb a tree or knowlage to idk chop it down burn it down..

Caesar Flickerman Kuzco ( Emperors new groove) If this isn’t him I have no idea what is. Total Kuzco vibes the but also somewhat caring but most of the interviews is how he does. Its beauty and its grace its Caesers face. But He does try to help out to the best of his ability.

Boggs Mattias. Frozen 2 Basically he actually cares for Katniss doesn’t want to see harm done to her. A rebel against his leader. ( I think he would of honestly be proud of Katniss for Killing Coin). But Only hopes for the best.

Cato Prince Eric ( Little mermaid) No offence but holy crap hes an idiot lol ( Eric I mean). Cato is smart but clueless. If he beileved that 2 could win. ( I honestly have no idea why I chose him for Cato)

Katniss’s Mother ( Iduna) Frozen ( Anna and Elsas mother). Yeah Mrs Everdeen did leave her daughters to fend for themselfs but bits of her came back to life every day. and if she had a choice she would of died with her husband but she is the strongest damn person because she could of died if she wanted to but she stayed for her daughters sakes. I would like to think Iduna would of done the same if she had that chance.

Madge Moana. Okay I will admit stange but Madge is pretty bad ass like Moana tho she doesn’t leave she is very family is everything quiet. But not a sas for a village leaders daughter Moana isn’t bad at all. I could see her being the Madge we don’t get to see.

C7: Somehow I’ll Be Strong

Book: A Good Kid

It was a tradition in our friend group that once a month we would gather at Patton’s house to have a movie night. I’m sure that if it was up to Patton it would be at least every two weeks. But Patton’s Dad, Mr. Thomas, said that we could only do it once a month during the school year.

If it had been up to me we would do a movie marathon of some kind every month. But once again, Mr. Thomas said we could only watch one movie and that it couldn’t be longer than ninety minutes. The last rule was made after I tried to get everyone to watch ‘The Sound of Music’ which is two hours and fifty-five minutes.

The way our movie nights worked was that we rotated each month on who got to pick the movie. Last month it had been Logan’s turn which meant that we watched some boring space documentary. But this month it was my turn!

I walked up to the front door of the Sanders’ household with five different DVD cases in my hand. I know that we were only allowed to watch one film but I still like to get Patton and Logan’s opinion on which to watch.

Standing on the front porch I rang the bell. I could hear Patton’s joyful yell and the sound of running footsteps, I smiled as he threw open the door and flung his arms around me.

“Roman! You're here!” He yelled “I missed you.”

“You just saw me at school.” I laughed, hugging him back.

I chuckled lightly as I pulled away from the hug and Patton led me inside and to the kitchen where Logan was. “Hey Nerd,” I said.

Logan rolled his eyes, keeping them in the book he was reading.

“So I see that Roman’s here.” I looked over to see Patton’s dad standing in the entryway that led into the kitchen.

“Hello Mr. Thomas,” I said with a smile.

The man laughed “Roman, how many times do I have to tell you? It’s just Thomas.”

“Sure thing Mr. Thomas,” I replied with a cheeky grin.

Thomas playfully rolled his eyes at me and moved to the kitchen table where he opened his laptop. Most likely to get some work done, not like that’s any of my business. I started chatting with Patton before his foster brother came downstairs.

“Well, if it isn’t the Emo Nightmare!” I said with a smirk. Virgil looked over at me with a scoff of annoyance before moving to the fridge and pulling out a water bottle.

“So,” Patton said, returning to our conversation. “What are we watching tonight Roman?”

“I haven’t decided yet but I do know that it will be one of these movies,” I said pulling out the DVD cases I had brought.

Logan set his book aside and looked at the cases “why do you always choose Disney movies?”

“I don’t always choose Disney!” I protested “sometimes I chose a musical.” I heard Virgil snort and I turned to him “what? You have a problem with Disney?!”

“No,” He said. “I, too, am a Disney fan.”

“You?” I laughed.

“What? Why is that so hard to believe?”

“Disney movies are the embodiment of goodness and purity, something you would know nothing about!” I said, still laughing.

“Be nice kiddo” Patton scolded.

“Disney movies have such wonderful and empowering messages!” I said to Virgil.

Virgil gave me a dark smirk and leaned up against the kitchen counter, still holding his water bottle.“You must not be watching the same movies then.” He said, “because the movies I know have much more sinister undertones.”

He looked over at Logan and Patton “Come on, you must sense it. I'm just making sure you're alert to all of the messages in those films, whether they were intentional or not.”

“Actually, this is kind of intriguing,“ Logan said.

“What?” I cried.

“So you think every movie has a darker meaning or a misleading message?” Logan clarified.

“Oh yeah.”

“This is ridiculous!” I yelled “you besmirch the name of Disney. This time, you have gone too far!”

“Really?” Virgil raised an eyebrow, setting aside his water. “This is where you cross the line?”

“Well, how 'bout this?” Patton cut in “Logan and I will throw out some Disney movies and you two tell us what we’re supposed to learn from each movie.”

The two of us agreed and Patton got started. I’m sure I’ll win. There was no way that evil villain will be able to find anything wrong with such perfect movies.

“Okay, movie one. Cinderella.” Patton said.

“Ha! Easy.” I said, “believe in your dreams and one day, they will come true.”

“Sure, just literally wait around your entire life, subjecting yourself to the cruelty of your ungrateful, ignorant family members, until some magical fairy comes along to save you.” Virgil said sarcastically “don't take action yourself.”

“She had mice, too!” I protested.

“Not to mention, men can't memorize the face of a woman they've been dancing around with for hours, they have to rely on the shoe.” The darker teen added, “ergo... men are idiots.”

“He was a very busy prince! He had a lot on his mind!”

“Let's just move to another.” Patton said, “um, Snow White!”

“Okay, so this time the message is to not do what the princess did.” I said, “don't accept random fruit from strangers.”

“Or, don't eat fruit...?” Patton said.

“No,” Thomas called from the kitchen table.

“No?”

“The bigger message is to just run away from your problems and become the housekeeper for seven men,” Virgil said.

“Sometimes the best solution is to get out of a bad situation!”

“Not to mention, a prince comes out of nowhere and plants a kiss on a seemingly sleeping girl?” He adds “I guess consent isn't really that important.”

“I never did understand that,” Logan said to himself.

“He thought she was dead! It was a farewell kiss!” I yelled, “what's with all the prince hate?”

“I wonder,” Virgil said in a sarcastic tone that I’ve grown to hate.

“Well, how about something a little bit more recent: Frozen,” Patton suggested.

“A sister's love triumphs overall!” I said.

“And don't trust random princes. I can get behind that” Virgil added.

“I swear…”

“Also, when Elsa passes away, Olaf's gonna die too, 'cause the magic will be gone. So just prolong the inevitable?” Immediately Patton and I cried out about how dark that was. Virgil just shrugged saying that he’d warned us.

“How about we lighten it up with Peter Pan?” Patton suggested.

“Don't let your childhood spirit ever die” I said.

“Also, it's totally fine to believe a random stranger when they tell you to jump out the window after they've broken into your house.” Virgil said “but I would guess that's how your whole being would die.”

I groaned “urgh…”

“Okay, how about Aladdin? My favorite!” Thomas said, moving to lean up against the table. Watching us with interest.

“The value of a person is not determined by wealth.” I told them “a diamond in the rough can be found anywhere, even someone who may be considered a street rat.”

“And they can get what they want by lying and deceiving their way right into the castle and getting the princess.” Virgil smirked.

“Oh, come on!” I cried “he came clean in the end! He even freed the Genie!”

“Yeah, he did.” Virgil agreed “but not before his way lying and deceiving right into the castle and getting the princess.”

“How about Fox and the Hound?” Patton asked.

“True friendship overcomes any boundaries set by society.” I said, folding my arms and glaring at Virgil.

“But then that friendship will be immediately be terminated by that society, and the two must learn their place in the world.” He added.

“Beauty and the Beast” Logan suggested.

“Okay, I know what you're gonna say, you're gonna say--”

“Stockholm Syndrome.” Virgil and I said in unison.

“But,” I said “it is more than just a prisoner falling in love with her kidnapper! It is about a love that transcends outward appearance. Even a beastly, hairy, animal-- you're right, that doesn't sound much better.” Hums of agreement floated around the room “But come on, can you really look down so harshly on these movies?”

“I still like them,” Virgil said “there's just some darker messages that we don't first see.”

“Bambi?” I asked.

“Man is dangerous.”

“Pocahontas!”

“White man is dangerous.”

“Sleeping Beauty!”

“Well, now we're back to the lack of consent with sleeping women.” He responded with a smirk.

“It was to lift a curse!” I yelled.

“The Little Mermaid?” Thomas asked.

“Don't just sign a contract without having your mer-lawyer look over all the fine print and stipulations. That one's just common sense.” Virgil said.

“Or learn to write, or use sign language.” Logan added “there's more than one way to tell the prince you're the girl that saved him.” I couldn’t help but silently agree with both Virgil and Logan.

“Well then, how about we just concede that Disney movies have a lot of different, interesting messages within them” Patton said.

“Duh, that's what I've been saying.” Virgil said “I never said Princey was wrong.”

I was surprised “you didn't?”

“No.”

“Well,” I said slowly “then I suppose I shall concede a few points to you.”

“Great.” Virgil began to leave the kitchen, water bottle in hand, when I called out to him.

“Wait,” he stopped and slowly turned around “there’s one movie you forgot” I said.

“Which one?”

“Tangled.”

Virgil stiffened “there are those in your life who are supposed love and care for you but sometimes all they do is hurt you.” He answered quietly.

Everyone in the room went silent. Virgil ducked his head and flipped up his hood, hiding his face from view. And he quickly disappeared down the hall.

Stores are not legally allowed to discriminate or disrupt commerce which comes from even the customers who refuses to wear masks. Stores can say it's private property. However, because the stores are open to the public, thanks to the 4th amendment, thanks to other things as well, prohibiting customers is discrimination among other things as well. The maskless buyer is not trespassing if he or she is not disrupting commerce. Moreover, when you prohibit customers from stores, then you are engaging in the disruption of commerce which may be illegal among other things as well partly because the customers are part of the free market exchange system which we call commerce. Stopping customers means you are disrupting commerce. That is illegal. You should go to jail for disrupting commerce. It may be many different things, not just that. Stores and states must be held accountable for violating laws. Stores are public. They cannot enforce masks. Churches however are legally considered to be private and can enforce masks.

Dumbo

Before I convinced Shadey I wanted to watch it before seeing the remake, I actually had not ever seen the original Dumbo and had only the vaguest idea what happens in it. Watching it for the first time now was kind of fascinating. Even aside from the jarring old-timey racist bits, there's something really distinctly old-fashioned about its style and storytelling - a crystal-clear sense that this is a movie from back when animation was still relatively new and mostly comedic shorts rather than serious narratives, and it would never play out the way it does if it were being made today.

For example, Casey Jr. the train is randomly animate, where no other objects are; this seems a fantastically weird choice today, when we generally expect that objects are not alive and don't talk unless it's a movie about objects being alive, but in Dumbo, they just sort of casually made this one steam engine sentient, just because they wanted to animate a lively steam engine. The animation has an exaggerated style where everything moves and squashes and stretches as much as possible, because look, we're making drawings and they can move! Animated storks - not representations, but the actual storks - fly over a map of the US complete with names written on it, as if this were literally what it looks like - it's weird and quirky and exactly like something that'd be in old animated shorts and exactly like something that wouldn't be in modern animated movies.

The actual story is structured really strangely. The movie is only 64 minutes long. It opens with a fairly long sequence, I think literally ten or fifteen minutes, about a stork delivering Dumbo to his mother and singing happy birthday to him. None of this is in any way relevant to the rest of the film, beyond the fact that Dumbo was born; it's just a cute sequence that they thought of. After this, Dumbo is mocked and made fun of, his mother is locked up for trying to defend him, and Timothy the mouse befriends Dumbo and inspires the ringmaster to make him the centerpiece of a new act, which is only all the more humiliating and miserable. Dumbo is briefly comforted by his imprisoned mother before unknowingly drinking some alcohol-laced water, hallucinating the highly disturbing "Pink Elephants on Parade" song, and then waking up in a tree. By the time we actually see Dumbo fly, with the help of a supposedly magic feather, there are only a couple of minutes left of the runtime. Immediately they go back to the circus, Dumbo tries to fly during his act only to drop the feather, Timothy tells him in mid-air that the feather wasn't actually magic, Dumbo successfully flies without it, and then it's closing credits montage time. The montage shows that Dumbo and his mother stay with the circus, despite how abusive they consistently were to them, only he's famous and privileged now so it's fine, I guess.

Whatever you think of the original film, I immediately pinpointed several things I expected would definitely be different in a modern retelling. In any conventional modern movie, Dumbo would learn to fly much earlier; he'd spend some significant time believing that he could only fly because of the feather, the revelation that the power to fly was inside him all along would be during the climax, and surely after that we'd actually see Dumbo using his feather-free flying ability in some heroic way - to save his mom, say. And he'd definitely not be made to stay at the circus at the end, unless we got to see some concrete evidence that the circus had changed: the circus people in the original were one-dimensional assholes, and by any system of morality that doesn't just sort of automatically assume that animals exist for human entertainment, he should have ditched them.

Tim Burton's live-action remake made all the changes I'd been expecting - but also a whole lot more that just kind of baffled me. The original Dumbo is clearly mostly a story about bullying and ostracism, in that fairly conventional form where it turns out the feature everyone bullied Dumbo for actually gives him a special enviable talent - and mostly, Dumbo is ostracized by the other elephants. The story is mostly about the interactions between the animals, who comprise most of the speaking cast, though Dumbo himself doesn't speak. In the remake, though, for some baffling reason they decided to make the animals nonverbal in general. Instead, a host of human characters are added - the circus performers are meant to be sympathetic, one of them is a tragic army man whose wife died with two children who serve as the main protagonists, there's an amusement park owner villain, a rich banker... Meanwhile, Timothy Q. Mouse, the deuteragonist of the original, is relegated to a tiny cameo as a regular mouse in a cage. There are no other elephants (or I don't think so? If there are, they are nonentities). Dumbo is ostracized and mistreated only by humans - but that just doesn't quite have the same meaning as him being rejected by his own kind.

Instead, a loose adaptation of the original film (save the revelation that he doesn't need the feather) takes place within the first half of the movie, and the second half is an entirely new plot about the circus being overtaken by an evil corporation that wants to make Dumbo do shows at their giant theme park. At the end, the kids and the circus people help Dumbo and his mother escape to India, the entire theme park burns down, and the circus becomes independent again and stops mistreating animals. The overall theme isn't really about bullying at all; it's more about the idea of the weirdos and misfits coming together and supporting each other against the cruel, conventional mainstream. That's a fine theme in itself, but it's very much not the theme of the original Dumbo.

As an adaptation, therefore, it's a strange one. It isn't telling the same core story - some of the same events are involved, but it's just not at all about the same thing as the original. As its own independent film... well, it's still a pretty strange and confused one, rooted in cliché, and full of things that are just obvious frustrating nonsense. The circus gets a full tent of people excited to see a regular old baby elephant, and they think Dumbo's adorable; then they see his adorably huge ears and... not only does the entire tent of people start loudly mocking him, they start chanting "Dumbo, Dumbo, fake, fake, fake!" What on God's green Earth. For one thing, Dumbo's ears obviously only make him cuter, who are you people. For another, why would you loudly jeer at a fucking baby elephant, what is wrong with you. But perhaps most audaciously... even if Dumbo's ears weren't real (and why would you think they're fake, when the circus had initially made every effort to cover them up), he is still a goddamned baby elephant, exactly what they came here to see! What are you complaining about! In the original Dumbo, the people are pretty simplistic and cartoony in behaviour, but he got laughed at when he tripped over his ears into a puddle, and then there were a few asshole teenagers making fun of the ears - not this entire audience of bizarre aliens in human suits just all getting together to bully a baby animal.

It's all like this - just the weirdest writing choices. The feather doesn't work psychologically on Dumbo by convincing him that he can fly because he's been told it's magic. (Dumbo himself doesn't really have much of a personality or drive the story.) Initially he flies for the first time because he accidentally sucks the feather into his trunk and this makes him sneeze, which sends him flying off the ground. Then as the movie proceeds he stops actually sneezing and starts just taking off on his own after sucking the feather into his trunk. At this point there is zero reason for anyone to think the feather has anything to do with this, but even the girl who's obsessed with science and experimentation doesn't think to question this until the end. Meanwhile, after learning that a baby elephant can fly on its ears, the amusement park owner somehow decides he wants Dumbo's act to involve a fully-grown woman riding on his back, and expects this to just work, and then absolutely nobody questions whether maybe Dumbo can fly his own weight but not the additional weight of an adult human. (He is a baby! He's small! Nobody would expect an animal of his size to carry an adult on the ground!) The woman, who's supposed to be sympathetic, literally gets on his back and expects him to take off before these people have even seen him fly on his own at all! Why is nobody asking the reasonable questions here, not even the, again, girl whose sole character trait is her desire to be a scientist? It was just bizarre and enraging, and only made it harder to see any of these people as actual human beings. Instead of "Pink Elephants on Parade" being a nightmare dream sequence, it's just a while of Dumbo staring up at a circus act involving elaborate soap bubbles that kinda sorta look like elephants changing shape; it doesn't mean anything or say anything for the story, it's just a "Hey, technically we've got this song from the original movie in here, sort of!" For anyone who hadn't seen the original, this bit would just be baffling; for anyone who had, it's a pathetic imitation removed from the entire context of it.

So all in all, the live-action Dumbo was a strange, strange film. The original Dumbo genuinely could have used a remake - but instead of focusing on improving the ways in which that story faltered, the remake just tried to do its own unrelated thing, and that thing was just pretty weird. The message is cute in itself, but this story did not need to be about Dumbo, and Dumbo did not need to be turned into this.

Have I ever gone on the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man ride at Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park in Florida?

That thing that I have a 2001 photo of near my bed and have had it there since 2001?

Er...only like 8 times!

Sit down and let me spin you a tale.

Long before there was a Spider-Man movie, long before I knew there was GOING to be one, I found out about the ride at like age 9-10.

It then became my life’s dream to go on that ride. And I do mean dream because I lived in England and my family at the time were living with my grandparents home as we slowly built our new house, a feat that took 2 years so we didn’t have the cash to spare on a big holiday like that.

One of the most crushing childhood memories I have is when there were vague discussions of a holiday to Florida with our closest family friends. But that fell through and I had to live with almost getting to go on that ride. I eagerly scoured our family friends’ holiday photos for a mere glimpse of the Spider-Man ride but nothing!

Remember this was the late 1990s/early 2000s, there was no Youtube and your internet connection was a joke, even if I knew how to use it.

But by the Summer of 2001 we’d finished our new home and moved out. And we finally decided to go to Florida with our family friends...and two other groups of family friends for a two-week mega vacation hitting all the Disney and Universal parks and other tourist attractions (which for us included a bona fide American ‘mall’).

I enjoyed Disney’s MGM studios and Animal Kingdom, but I was waiting for the day we’d hit up Islands of Adventure.

And then the day finally came and I was sure something was going to go wrong and get in my way.

First it was the lines to get into the park.

Then it was being confronted by some admittedly well meaning actors portraying Boris and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle, trying to engage me in conversation when I just. Wanted. To. Get. To. Spider-Man!

And when I finally arrived at SUPER HERO ISLAND it seemed insane. For some reason in my child’s mind the idea of a theme park where every corner you looked and built into the street itself you’d see Disney characters, made sense.

But to see that for my heroes, the Marvel characters just didn’t seem real. Remember this was 2001, the Marvel Universe wasn’t as well known to the public (especially not in England). So whilst I had of course learned about it from all the 90s Marvel cartoons, no one else I knew could instantly recognize like Doctor Doom.

But here I was seeing Jim Lee inspired art of him, Storm, the Hulk and a gigantic Bagley image of Spider-Man in front of THE Daily Bugle!

But alas...the Spider-Man line was immense.

So we got a fast pass and arranged it to come back later and in the meantime I got to be traumatized by the Jurassic Park water drop ride. I was in the front seat age 10 with a T-rex approaching me and then...the ride stopped. Technical difficulties. In fact MOST rides that summer were having technical difficulties.

So we were stuck a T-rex looming over us. Unnoticed by me everyone else on the ride seemed to take a grip and bow their heads. I didn’t get why until it was too late and my eyes sharply turned from the T-rex to the like 60 foot high sheer drop as the ride came down with a splash.

Far less traumatic was getting a photo and autographs with the various superheroes and villains who showed up at Marvel’s Super Hero Island. Of course I got to meet the real Spider-Man...and my mother asked how Mary jane was.

His reply:

Anyway, finally, finally, finally we got in the fast pass line for the ride. Which still wasn’t THAT fast but still we weren’t baking alive in the summer heat. And as a bonus I got to take in the surroundings of the Daily Bugle and the 1994 inspired animated shorts made for the ride explaining the whole story behind it (including my first ever look at Scream, a brand new symbiote I’d never even known about!).

Then we got to the ride. It was thrilling, the best feeling of my life. I was on an adventure with my hero Spider-Man! And we were all falling through the roof tops, spinning around and then...

We are sorry to inform you we are experiencing technical difficlties

The ride just stopped DEAD.

In hindsight I suppose it was all too appropriate.

I wanted to experience what it was like to be Spider-Man and now I was going through some typical Parker luck!

A few minutes elapsed before we all yelled because a literal burst of flame exploded nearby us, the ride had started again.

It finished up and I don’t think I’d ever been happier in my life.

But I was about to be because due to the technical difficulties...we got to go again without lining up!

Whilst my family, friends and family friends in attendance enjoyed the ride well enough (except for my friend’s Dad, he’s always had chronic back pains) they all knew this day, this moment, was for me!

And it wasn’t quite over yet.

As we walked down the corridor towards the gift shop we saw...the Green Goblin!

It was a lifesized statue standing just besides the doorway to the gift shop, presumably set up so people could get photos with him.

Well, he was my favourite villain so I had to. I stood beside the statue and posed when...he came to life!

It was one of the actors who’d accompanied the heroes on their periodic arrivals to the Super Hero Island for photos and autographs.

Somehow this was less traumatic than the Jurassic Park ride. I asked for his autograph and he obliged, plunking his pumpkin bomb bean bag onto my head to free up his hands.

Fucking awesome.

And this didn’t even cover the gift shop itself.

I’d never seen so much Spider-Man STUFF in the same place at the same time. I got myself a Green Goblin action figure from the now defunct (but fondly remembered by Marvel Toy historians) Spider-Man Classics line of toys and picked up my very, very first trade paperback (before I even knew that’s what it was!)

Spider-Man’s greatest Villains

It was an eclectic collection of single issues (and one annual) spotlighting an individual villain. Doc Ock, Mysterio, Kingpin, Electro, Hobgoblin, Vulture and mah boys Carnage and Venom (drawn by McFarlane himself, in my first exposure to his work, it left a major impression!)

Being a child f the 1990s and specifically the 1994 cartoon (which was the most recent and influential adaptation at the time, merchandise for it abounding in the store) Venom and Carnage were among my absolute favourite...things in life basically.

I wasn’t alone because just about every Spider-Fan my age loved them too. Hence why getting toys based on them proved elusive for me. And Spider-Man’s bad ass super mega ultra cool black costume even moreso. I’d long resigned myself that getting that toy was just a pipe dream and I’d missed my window for it long ago...Less than 15 minutes after leaving the gift shop my Dad got me this:

There were at least two other stores around the area of the Spider-Man ride and one of them sold toys and other collectibles.

Not only did I fulfill another childhood dream of having a black costume Spider-Man, but the toy even came with a SYMBIOTE toy too! And it was super posable, unlike all my other toys, including my Spider-Man ones.

AND...it came with a reprint of ASM #252, the debut of the black costume itself by DeFalco and Frenz and starring Black Cat too. An all round awesome issue and one of the first classic Spider-Man stories I ever got to read.*

The other of the two nearby stores was what an older me would call a relatively modest LCS, as it wasn’t that big of a store and sold ONLY comics and trades.

But you have to understand, 10 year old me had NEVER been inside an LCS. The idea that so many comics could be in the same place and that a store JUST selling them could exist was akin to the Cave of Wonders from Aladdin, something that could only ever exist, not just in America (the land where Spider-Man and all those other characters I loved, were from) but specifically there on Super Hero Island.

The rest of the day was pretty fun.

My friend somehow coerced her mother and mine to go on the Incredible Hulk roller coaster which I believe at the time was the tallest roller coaster in America, with this savage twist in the middle of it and a net to catch keys and other falling items.

We went on the Popeye ride, one of those rubber dingy rides that is supposed to splash you a lot and...I do not know if I’ve ever felt more wet in my life.

All in all it was a good day and I vividly remember being in one of the restaurants on the boulevard leading up to the theme park (a Three Supremes themed place for some reason, with wax statues of the band nearby our table) just pouring over my new toys, my new comics and my experience.

Best day of my life up until then!

Hell the ‘after party’ when we finally got back to England was awesome too. My beloved grandmother had bought me the latest issue of Astonishing Spider-Man that I wasn’t able to pick up whilst I was away. Who was the villain of the story?

Carnage!...Also Silver Surfer was there and he was pretty cool too.

It wasn’t the last time I went on the ride though.

My family and family friends made it an annual tradition between about 2002-2008 to spend the Christmas holidays in America and every year up until 2006 we spent some time in Orlando, meaning I got to check out the Spider-Man ride at least once every year and pick up a new trade and a bona fide original American comic book (not a reprint!) off the stands.**

So to answer your question definitively, yes I have indeed gone on the Spider-Man ride at Universal. I’ve done so many times and the ride and location are incredibly special to me.

*When I say classic I mean anything from before like 1995 because the stories I’d been reading in my UK reprint magazine, Astonishing Spider-Man, were all from 1995-1998, except for when they specifically spotlighted an older comic and referred to it as a classic. To me a classic was anything with ‘older art’.

**This experience led to me getting one of my favourite stories ever, Revenge of the Green Goblin, the second JMS trade with the 9/11 issue and Aunt May and Peter’s conversation, and also Kraven’s Last Hunt and Spider-Man Torment.

I fondly remember reading KLH whilst walking between rides and shows in Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, I even remember I was reading part 2 or 3 at like a Wild West show at the latter after dark and somehow this added to the atmosphere of the story.

Torment was a different experience. I’d seen the cover, I knew and loved McFarlane’s art and the story turned out to be a sequel to KLH to my delight. But I had a really bad stomach bug during that particular vacation and Torment helped me get through it. Half because it was a Spider-Man story I loved reading and half because the pain of my bug led me to relate to Peter’s pain in that story.

Tale as old as time: ESO Network chats with Disney animator Tom Bancroft

Beauty and the Beast. The Lion King. Aladdin. Mulan.

These iconic animated films are part of the story of the famous “Disney Renaissance,” which propelled the studio back to commercial success and critical acclaim in the ’80s and ’90s.

Tom Bancroft played a role in that story too — the artist has 30 years of experience in the animation industry, much of which was spent with Walt Disney Feature Animation. He was an animator on four animated shorts and eight feature films (the films named above are part of that list). He has also worked with Big Idea Productions, creators of the popular Veggie Tales animated series.

During Dragon Con 2018, ESO Network reporters Mary Ogle and Ashley Pauls chatted with Bancroft about his love for art, his favorite Disney project, and the industry shift from hand-drawn to computer animation. ESO: Tell us a little bit about your career and how you got started. What was that initial spark? What motivated you to get involved in this and pursue your art as a career?

I think I grew up in a golden age of comic strips. So this is a little tangent-y, but it was not the golden age of animation, unfortunately. When I grew up, mostly in the ’70s, I had a twin brother and we would draw together and what we would draw was comic strips. “Peanuts” was really big with Charles Schulz, and then soon came “Bloom County” and then soon after that “Calvin and Hobbes.” And of course the peak of Mad magazine.

It was all that sort of illustration and comic strips that really fascinated us. But then we had sort of a sub love of live action film, but especially Ray Harryhausen movies, which is stop motion. And we didn’t put it all together to go, “well, we like to draw, we like stop motion — animation seems like a good fit.” It still took a while till just after high school that we really realized [that].

Simultaneous to all that, we were watching Saturday morning cartoons all the time. But the love for Saturday morning cartoons wasn’t really artistic, I would say; it wasn’t like we were drawing “Scooby-Doo” or the “Super Friends.” We also liked comic books too. But kind of both of us looked at that as the impossible dream, because anatomy and things like that — it looked too hard.

But like I said, on the animation side of things, it was kind of a dead time. Those Saturday morning cartoons were pretty popular, but really, it was all about getting it out cheap, right? You look at “Super Friends,” and limited animation and Hanna-Barbera stuff. It was kind of a bad time to want to be an animator, I would say say. Even though there’s a lot of nostalgia for “He-Man” and things like that, it’s just not really well animated. (laughter) I think we can admit that.

[Then] Disney films started to get a little bit better and better. They were on the cusp of having a resurgence. “The Great Mouse Detective” had come out; that’s a fun, cartoon-y, well-animated film. And it was films like that, that really kind of made us go, “Oh, wait a second, you know, this might be the path. It combines a lot of our loves.”

And so we just kind of fell into animation, really. Did a little stop motion animated film for our church youth group, got together a couple friends that also wanted to try animation. And we just sort of taught ourselves. This is before the internet, so we’d go to the library and try and find books on even exposure because we’re literally using a Super 8 camera and shooting these clay animated figures one frame at a time. And so we just needed to learn, but that was close to Ray Harryhausen, so it was within our wheelhouse. We were researching him quite a bit.

Then that love translated to “well, we already like to draw, why don’t we try drawn animation?” And then we found out about CalArts (California Institute of the Arts). We already were living in California, and CalArts is like the animation school in the U.S. It still is, but at the time it was one of the only ones and it was founded by Walt Disney. So we tried for it and got it in, miraculously. And after a year and a half, got an internship at Disney. And that’s what started our career.

Have you done mostly traditional animation? Or have you also delved into computer animation?

Later on in my career, pretty much toward the end of my Disney days, I ended up following my heart in 2000 and joining Big Idea Productions, and they do Veggie Tales. While I was there, I learned CG animation and learned how to do Bob and Larry in the computer. And fortunately, it was simpler; they didn’t have arms and legs.

But it was still tough. I mean, it was a huge learning curve. I’ve always heard, “Oh yeah, computers are just, you know, just a tool.” But it’s a radically different way to animate for someone like me, who had really finally figured out how to do 2D animation after about 10 years at Disney. It felt like I was starting all over again, and it was a tough year.

And I can’t say I loved it; I missed drawing. And so I immediately switched over, even while I was at Big Idea. After animating a little bit, I switched over to storyboarding and then ultimately directed and created the 2D “Larryboy Adventures” show. That was much more a better fit for me.

I left and came back to Disney and did “Brother Bear” traditional animation, and worked on Rutt and Tuke, the two moose characters. And then after that, I started my own company. And so I’ve been pretty much independent for what I call the second phase of my career. And a lot of that has been character design and children’s book illustration, some directing, some 2D animation still too, but a variety of different things. Comic books, even.

You’ve gotten to see both sides, with the hand-drawn animation and the computer. How is the creative process different and what are some of the advantages and disadvantages you feel are in each form?

It’s funny, because a lot of people think that the switch and kind of the death of 2D animation in feature films — here in the U.S., especially — is because CG animation is cheaper. It’s not; it’s the same or more, really, and you almost need as many people too. It’s not like we even save a lot of money in CG animation on how many people you hire, and you certainly have higher equipment costs than ever before. And it’s not even necessarily faster.

The biggest difference between 2D and CG is that there’s a lot more upfront work in CG, and then 2D has more time at the end. Because in CG once they model the characters and get all that figured out, the animation process goes a lot quicker than in 2D, because now they have the model, it’s not going to change. It’s not like it’s going to get revised. And some of that happens, obviously, but they kind of stick to it. And then also, at certain point, once they put the lights in, there’s a lot more automated, what I would call “the ink and paint phase” in 2D. There’s the rendering process that goes a lot quicker, because once they model it, they know the colors and they’re already set.

We can get going a lot quicker [with 2D]; we can get into the animation phase, we can design the characters and all that and jump into animation a little sooner. But then the back end is a lot of cleanup and color background painting. All that is on the back end, and it can take a lot more time.

What was your favorite Disney film to work on, if you can narrow it down?

Oh, it’s pretty easy. It was “Mulan.”

I got to design and develop Mushu the dragon. And so because I was the supervising animator for Mushu on that film, I really got onto the film very early and put a lot of heart and soul into that film, more so than what I was able to on other films.

I did young Simba; I’m very proud of animating young Simba on “The Lion King,” but I worked under Mark Henn who was the supervisor of that. And he had designed Simba and was issuing me scenes and stuff. So I didn’t get to have as much of a say, I guess you could say, in defining his character, just in the scenes that I had, not like the whole character.

How do you approach putting personality into your characters? What things do you use to show a visual representation of that personality?

Some of that is in the character design. There’s certain things like when I was designing Mushu, we knew right off the bat that he was going to be a thin, snake-like dragon because I found out really quickly in my research, in Asian dragons, they’re usually based on snakes and things like that. The dragon in [“Sleeping Beauty”] is a European dragon, and they’re more like a crocodile or something like that. They’re very thick and massive. But the Asian ones usually are skimming across the water or they’re fire dragons. They also are elemental, and Mushu is a fire dragon, which we never mentioned in the movie. But it was part of his design.

I have flame-like shapes on him, and they oftentimes have fish scales. And he’s got a little mustache, kind of a fuzzy upper lip, which is based on a camel. They’re made up of different pieces: his cow ears and horns like an elk or something, although I shrunk them. He’s got kind of a pig’s nose; they’re usually made up of a lot of different animals. And so all of that research went into the design, even a very simplified form. If you look at Mushu, you don’t really guess those things as much. But every single thing on him is there for a reason, even his claws that are like an eagle’s claws. They’re just very simplified and stylized.

Before he left his room, Virgil stopped to double and triple check everything. “Okay, the bed is made. Pillows are in the right spot. Okay, the curtains are how they should be.” He continued for a good five minutes until he was done. “Okay. Everything seems to be correct. Wait. Did I check it right?” He checked for another five minutes. “Okay, Virgil. You checked everything. Now just go downstairs.” He closed the door when “Wait. What about the bed?” He quickly opened the door to check yet again. “Everything is perfect, Virgil. Just go downstairs.” He walked down the stairs counting in his head. “One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four.” This continued until he made it to the end of the stairs. It was perfect. There were twelve steps, a multiple of four. He always felt lucky about that as he did everything in fours. But these thoughts were abruptly interrupted.

“Hey, kiddo! How are you?” Patton’s happy demeanor irritated him sometimes. But at least it was consistent. That calmed him a bit.

“Hey, Pat. I’m the same as always.”

“What? A huge edge lord?”

“Hello to you too, Roman.” Virgil gave the two-finger salute.

“Ah, Virgil. Exactly who we were waiting for.”

Virgil made a worried look. “You were waiting for me?”

“Don’t worry kiddo. It’s nothing bad.”

“Yes. We just wanted to discuss chores.”

“Chores? But we don’t have any.”

“That’s precisely the point. Patton does way more work than he shou- “

“It’s fine really,” Patton quickly intercepted.

“It’s not okay our soft puffball! You do everything and we barely do anything.”

“Yes. Because of this, we are assigning chores. Which chores would you like?”

Virge felt bad for Patton. The others were right, he took on a much bigger amount of work to keep everyone happy. It was nice, but he needed a break. But he didn’t want the others, namely Roman, to know that he cared. He would never hear the end of it. “Well, I would like none, but since I have no choice…” He walked over to the board Logan had set up listing all the chores. “The only available ones are cleaning the bathroom and the kitchen! Why’d you ask me to choose when all the others were already taken?”

“Um, well, it’s only two. The rest of us have quite a bit more,” Logan tried to argue.

“But they take the most time!”

“Well, then you’ll be even with us!” Roman compromised.

“Ugh, fine. I don’t have any choice.”

“Yeah! Thanks, kiddo.” Patton got up and hugged Virgil, well more like grasped his arms around him. Virgil stayed stiff like a limp noodle. “Don’t worry Virge. I only cleaned both of them on Saturday.”

“Hey, padre. It’s Saturday.”

Virgil groaned. “Well, if any of you need to take a piss or shit, do it now. You are not ruining my amazing cleaning job.”

Roman looked at the others before he bolted up the stairs to the bathroom. Virgil rolled his eyes. “I’ll get started in the kitchen.”

Patton helped direct him through all the cleaning supplies and what to do. Virgil internally thanked him as he got to work. Logan was vacuuming downstairs, Roman was cleaning all the windows and glass, and Patton was cleaning the tables. Virgil was cleaning the counter. He found it oddly relaxing. He liked when things were clean, but this new chore gave him more control. But what he liked most was how clean his hands became. Before he knew it, the kitchen, and his hands were spotless. Every little spot was wiped clean, every speck of dust gone.

“Hey kiddo, sorry to bother you. Just getting some wat-whoa.” Patton could not believe his eyes.

“Patton? What is it?” Logan asked from the living room. As he came in, he just sat there bugged eyed.

“Ugh. Why am I the only one cleaning?” Roman came into the kitchen as well.

“Get out guys. It’s getting dirtier.”

“I don’t think that’s even possible any more emo nightmare. You’ve seemed to have gotten rid of all the dirt in the world judging on how clean this kitchen is.”

“The kitchen is clean, but you guys aren’t! Now go finish your chores while I clean up this mess.” He ushered them out and started to clean where they were standing.

Patton whispered to the others, “There’s nothing there.”

“Who knew Virge was such a germaphobe?” Roman joked.

After Virgil finished cleaning the kitchen, it was time for the bathroom. Yes, it was a shitty job (sorry for the pun), but he oddly enjoyed this one too. Making it as clean as he wanted gave him more control and helped him relax. But the best part was how clean his hands had become. Because of all the chemicals, he had to continuously wash his hands. They were so soft and again, clean. His anxiety was probably the lowest it had ever been in years.

When Virgil was done, he came downstairs noticeably relaxed. The other three noticed and stared in confusion.

“Who are you and what have you done with Virgil?”

“Very mature princy.” He rolled his eyes.

Patton shook his head to stop him from staring any longer. “Hey. We just finished our chores. Wanna watch some movies?”

“Oh, sure. As long as it’s not Disney.”

“Hey! Disney is art!”

“Whatever.”

They watched Disney. By the third movie, Logan was annoyed. He’s seen all these movies over ten times. He looked over to see what the others were doing, trying to see if they were still enthralled in the films. Of course, Roman and Patton were, but Virgil seemed to be on edge. Yes, he always was, as he was the literal embodiment of Thomas’ anxiety, but this was different. His leg was shaking and he kept looking up at the stairs. Logan leaned in and lightly touched Virgil’s arm, causing him to flinch. “You can go upstairs if you need to,” he whispered in his ear. “Don’t feel obligated to stay down here.” Virgil nodded and quietly padded upstairs. Luckily the other two didn’t notice as they were caught up in Aladdin’s antics.

Virgil felt dirty, really dirty. His hands had touched everything. The couch, the table, etc. He needed to get clean. Thankfully Logan noticed and mistook it for normal anxiety. Virgil made his way up the stairs and paused at the top. He knows he should just go in his room, but the bathroom seemed to be calling to him. “Nope. Just go to your room.” But as he got there, it was too much for him. It made him ten times more anxious in a matter of seconds. He made a beeline for the bathroom, panting as he closed the door. He stared at the sink ahead of him and walked over to it. Then he started to wash his hands. He washed them about four times before he stopped himself. “No. You’ve washed your hands enough. You’re fine. You’re clean.” He went to leave but stopped at the door. He put his sleeve over his hand then touched the doorknob to open it.

The next week was a strange one for Virgil. This new feeling that he needed to wash his hands continuously came up. While they were eating, watching movies, even while doing nothing. He noticed his hands got really dry and cracked. He used lotion to help it. Saturday came and he spent hours cleaning and hand washing. He had to stop. He tried to distract himself with anything. Music, movies, he even hung out with the other three. He admitted that it did help somewhat, but not entirely. The urge was still there. “It’s new. It’ll go away soon. Just wait it out.” But it didn’t go away. It was here to stay. The next Saturday came and he had to clean.

“Hey, kiddo I- oh. You’re not using gloves?”

Virgil ceased his cleaning. “I-I didn’t know we had gloves.”

“Oh, we do.” He rummaged through the cupboard and tossed them to Virgil.

“Thanks.” “Maybe these will help stop the urge.”

“Of course. Anyway, I came up to ask if you were alright. You’ve been actually hanging out with us.”

“Well isn’t that a good thing?”

“Well-yeah. I just thought something seemed off, but now it sounds silly. Sorry to bother you.”

“It’s not a problem dad. Thanks for worrying about me.”

Patton smiled big. “You’re very welcome.” With that, he left.

Virgil slipped the gloves on and continued to clean. He hoped they would work. He needed then to- “Ugh! These don’t work!” Virgil took the gloves off and threw them down. He stared at the sink. “No. nonononono. I can’t. I can’t. I- “He turned the water on and started to wash his hands.

Each week afterward mirrored this. It was a never-ending cycle of denial, fighting, perseverance, failure, and struggle. He didn’t know what to do. It was too out of hand. He had spent the day trying to distract himself. He played games with the others, they watched movies, he listened to music, he did just about anything he could think of to not give in to these compulsions.

“Are you alright Virgil?” Logan asked. He noticed Virgil acting weird this past couple of weeks. And this moment didn’t seem to be any different. His leg was shaking wildly and he couldn’t focus, well a lot less than usual.

Virgil had to act normal. “Yeah, pocket protector. I’m fine.”

“Virge, lately you’ve seemed…off,” Roman chimed in.

“Kiddo, are you sure everything’s okay?” Patton asked with that concerned dad voice.

Virgil fidgeted with his hands, feeling the dry, cracked skin. “Yes, I’m fine.” He looked at the clock on the wall behind Logan’s head. “It’s just late. I’m tired. I’m going to bed.” He got up from his chair.

“Oh. Well, goodnight kiddo.” Virgil just gave the two-finger salute and made his way to his bedroom.

Once inside, he started to hyperventilate. The thoughts wouldn’t go away. He started to hit his head, hoping the thoughts would just fly out. “Please. Go away. Please.” He couldn’t handle it. He made his way to the bathroom and washed his hands five times, ten times, twenty times. He couldn’t stop. It was all too much. “One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four.” Everything was in fours. “Ugh! It needs to be even. It needs to be balanced!” All his compulsions were caving in on him all at once. The only release was the constant hand washing. He lost track of time and how many times he had washed his hands. By the time his anxiety attack ended, he noticed his hands were covered in spots of blood.

His hands were so dry and cracked that they started to bleed. “Shit.” He went to his room and put lotion on the backs of his hands. It stung like a bitch, but they started to heal. He laid down on his bed and tried to go to sleep, but that was extremely difficult. “Just go to sleep. It’s late anyway. You’ll be okay. Just go to sleep.” It took two hours to finally fall out. His mind wouldn’t shut up and his guilt and anger wouldn’t let up.

Virgil woke up with more thoughts. “Oh my God. Just stop already. I hate this.” He got up, got dressed, fixed his room exactly how he always did and checked it multiple times. He sighed. “Everything’s correct. Everything’s perfect.” Yes, everything in his room was perfect, but his mind and life was a mess. As he walked out the corner of his eye caught the bathroom door. “Nononono, not again. Just go downstairs.” But he found his feet already taking him to there. Before he could say or do anything to stop it, his hands were in the sink. He washed them about five times (then three more to make it eight, a multiple of four). “Shit.” They were bleeding again. He went to his bedroom and reached for the lotion. But realized he used the last of it the night before. “Shitshitshitshitshitshitshit!” He contemplated what to do before hearing voices downstairs. He didn’t want to go along with it, but he knew what he needed to do. He breathed in and out, then made his way downstairs.

“Hey, Virgil! How are you?”

“I’m good Pat. Anyways, any one of you have lotion?”

“Um, Virgil are you sure you are okay? Your anxiety seems to be heightened.” Logan was worried now. He noticed something going on for weeks.

“Yes, caption obvious. Does anyone have lotion?”

“Why Virge? Using it for some…personal reasons?” Roman taunted.

“Oh, shut the fuck up! God, you’re so disgusting sometimes.”

Patton placed a hand on his shoulder. “Now calm down slugger.”

Virgil shoved his hand off. “Does anyone have any lotion?” he repeated.

“Virgil, why do you need lotion? Are you having some issues with dry skin?”

He looked down. “You could say that.”

“You must be having a really bad dry skin problem. You are acting like you need lotion to live.”

“Ugh! Princy, can’t you just shut up for once in your damn life?!” He started to scratch his now itchy hand. “And will somebody lend me some damn lotion?!”

Logan looked down at Virgil’s hands and noticed the scratching. “Virgil, let me see your hands.”

Virgil’s head snapped up and his eyes met Logan’s. “Shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit.” “What?”

“I’ve determined that the reason you have a need for lotion is dry hands. They are itchy, causing you to scratch.”

Virgil looked at his hands and stopped scratching. He shoved his hands in his pockets. “Great. You’ve figured it out. I have dry hands. Whatever. Just give me some damn lotion.”

“Are you sure you’re okay kiddo?”

“Yeah, Jack-smelling-ton. You doing okay?”

“Oh my God! I’m fine!”

“Falsehood. I’ve noticed something off for weeks now. There’s something going on that you’re not telling us.” Logan gave him a stern look. “I’m going to ask you again: Virgil, please show me your hands.”

“I-I can’t.” Virgil tried to be stern and stand his ground, but it just came out shaky.

Logan gave the others a glance; they seemed to be on the same page. Roman and Patton grabbed Virgil’s arms and pulled his hands out of his pockets.

“What the hell!”

Logan reached forward and pulled the long jacket sleeves up and grabbed his hands in his own. His face fell. “Virgil…”

“Kiddo, why are your hands so…dry?”

“Forget how dry they are padre, look at how bloody they are!”

Virgil pulled his hands out of Logan’s grip and started ringing his hands together.

“Virgil, why are your hands so bloody?” Logan had an idea of what was going on but needed to know for sure. He wished it wasn’t true. He didn’t want it to be true. It couldn’t be tr-

“I have OCD!” He yelled. “It’s like a band-aid. You just gotta rip it off.” He closed his eyes, not wanting to see their expressions. But he knew it was inevitable. He breathed in and out then opened his eyes. Roman was shocked, Patton had a hand covering his mouth, and Logan looked dejected. Like he knew all along. “Look, I’m fine. I just need some lotion. I ran out.”

Logan spoke up again. “Virgil, this is not okay. Your hands shouldn’t be bleeding. You need help.”

“Well, I can’t actually get help now can I, pocket protector? I’m apart of Thomas.”

“Thomas! How’s this affecting him?!” Roman practically screamed.

“I’ve noticed similar behavior that I’ve seen in Virgil in Thomas as well.”

“Yes, we know. I’m horrible. I’m a fucking screw up. Can you just get me some lotion? My hands are stinging.”

Logan looked at Patton. “Go see how Thomas is doing.” When Patton disappeared, he turned back to Virgil. “You are not a screw-up. You are not horrible. This is something you are dealing with. Something we will help you through.”

“Please Logan. Just…just let me be.”

“Virge, as your friends, we cannot just let it go,” Roman said. “We will help you kill this demon of yours.”

“OCD is usually lifelong. It’s not like a fucking cold that you can get rid of,” Vigil said with disdain and irritation.

Before Roman could respond, Logan spoke. “Virgil, I understand that. It’s something you’ll be fighting for a long time. But that doesn’t mean it won’t or can’t get better. We can help you to not wash your hands so often. Help you learn to control and decrease the constant thoughts.”

“But- “Virgil didn’t know how to continue. He didn’t want them to be upset even more.

“But what Virgil?” Logan was trying to stay calm while being stern. He wanted Virgil to corporate and agree to get better, but didn’t want to make him more anxious.

“What if when we deal with one compulsion it heightens the others?”

“The others?”

Virgil sighed. “I’ve had OCD for a few years now. Hand washing is just a new compulsion. It’s most intense for me when it first starts, which is why my hands are so bad. This isn’t the first time this has happened.”

“What are you other compulsions?” Roman asked. Though he constantly taunted the anxious trait, he did care for him.

Virgil sighed. “the two main ones are doing everything in fours and making everything even or balanced.”

“I-I didn’t realize- “

“That’s because I hid it so well teach. But this one- “He looked down at his hands. “Has more of a physical aspect to it. It’s hard to keep hidden.” He paused. “It’s hard to keep it hidden when it’s causing anxiety attacks,” He mumbled to himself.

“Wait. Did it cause anxiety attacks? I knew you had one last night as Thomas had one as well. But I didn’t know it was because of this.”

“Yeah. All my obsessions and compulsions kind of converged in on me all at once. It was not a fun experience.”

Logan took Virgil’s ringing hands in his. “Hey. We will help you through it all. The obsessions, compulsions, anxiety attacks, anger, anxiety, everything.”

“Yeah, Virge. You can talk to us whenever you need to.”

~~~~Beginning~~~~

Virgil knew they were talking, but couldn’t hear. Before when they pulled his hands from his pockets, they touched his hands. But he was able to calm himself enough to have a decent conversation. But now there Logan was, holding his hands again. It was too dirty, too tainted. It was too much. All of the sudden he couldn’t breathe. “Please, not another anxiety attack. I just had one last night. Please.” But his lungs didn’t listen. He ripped his hands from Logan’s and started ringing them together again.

“Virgil? Are you okay? Can you hear me? Virgil?! Shit.” Logan knew what was happening. “He’s having an anxiety attack. Virgil, hey. Look at me. I’m right here.” He took Virgil’s hands in his again not thinking, but he ripped them away again. He constantly glanced upstairs. “Crap. He’s gonna bolt and go to wash his hands.” “Virgil, no. You cannot go wash your hands. You need to stay here with us, okay?”

Virgil could only focus on the bathroom. He needed to wash his hands. He glanced at the other two before he turned and tried to speed up the stairs. Roman grabbed him from behinds and pulled him back. “Let me go! Please! I need to wash my hands! Please!” He started to sob as his breathing became even more labored.

Roman set him down on the floor and sat behind him to hold him down.

“Virgil, look at me. I’m right here. Let’s do some breathing exercises. Come on. The one you taught us.”

Virgil couldn’t pay attention. He was being held from behind like a fucking criminal and his mind wouldn’t shut up. He started to hit his head. “Stop it. Stop it. Please.”

Roman grabbed hands and held them at his sides. Tight enough so Virgil could still move but couldn’t go at his head again. “Come on, Virge. Breathing exercises.”

Logan had now crouched to Virgil’s level. He grabbed one of Virgil’s hands and placed on his chest. “Come on. Breathe with me. In and out. In and out. That’s right, in and out.”

Virgil tried his best to copy, but it seemed impossible. “I-I can-can’t. I can’t br-breathe.”

Logan may have been Thomas’ logic and would never admit to having feelings, but he did. He felt heartbroken seeing Virgil like this. He wanted him to be okay. And he hated how he dealt with this for years but he couldn’t help.

Roman saw the sadness in Logan’s eyes and decided to help take over a bit. “Come on Virge. In and out. You can do it.”

This shook Logan out of his thoughts. “Yes. In and out. You will be okay. Everything will be okay.”

It continued for half an hour. When it ended, Virgil was relieved. Breathe. “I can- “Breathe “breathe now.”

Logan’s shoulders dropped. “Thank God.” “I’m glad Virgil.”

But it the pain wasn’t over. Yes, Virgil just sobbed at the beginning of the attack. But he had another sob that he just couldn’t hold back. Tears started to fill his eyes.

“It’s okay Virge,” Roman consoled behind him.

Virgil let out a choked sob, then another, and then another. Until they all became mixed together. He hated crying in front of anyone. It made him feel weak. But right now, he was. He was too tired, too weak to care. He rolled into a ball and leaned against the wall. “I hate this.”

“We know, Virgil, we know. It’s okay.”

Roman and Logan tried to help him. Roman rubbed circles on his back while Logan did the same to his shoulder. Once Virgil calmed down, they tried to encourage him. “Everything’s okay Virge.”

“Yes. Virgil, you will be okay. We helped you through this, and we will continue to help you through everything. We can talk to Thomas about it for you if you want.”

“Uh, yeah. That-that’d be nice.”

“Though Virgil, Thomas needs to go to therapy to help you both.”

Virgil became silent for a bit then responded. “I know. I’m sorry.”

“No, no, no. You do not need to feel guilty my emo nightmare.”

Virgil chuckled at that.

“Roman is correct. There’s nothing wrong with needing therapy.”

Virgil was worried. “But what if- “

“What if what?”

“What if he’s prescribed anti-anxiety medication?”

Roman and Logan’s face fell. “Oh, Virge…”

“Virgil, anti-anxiety medication would not harm you. The medication is to help the brain function better, more ‘normal.’ The brain affects you which affects Thomas. The medication would help Thomas’ brain function better which would help you to feel better, which would help Thomas.”

“I-I didn’t think about it like that.”

“Yeah. A lot of people don’t,” Roman filled in.

“I guess it would be okay, if it would help.”

Logan smiled. “I’m glad to hear that Virgil.” Virgil yawned. “Do you want to take a nap?” Virgil gave a small smile and nodded. “Okay, but you’re sleeping down here on the couch. We need to be able to keep track of you.”

“You make me sound like a fucking murderer,” Virgil joked.

“Your hands are in bad shape. We don’t want the rest of you to follow suit,” Roman warned.

He sighed. “I guess you’re right.” They got up with Virgil. They followed him as he walked to the couch and laid down. Roman laid a blanket on him. They sat there as he fell asleep fairly quickly. Suddenly they felt a familiar pull. They glanced at each other before sinking down.

“Guys, what is going on?”

“Thomas, we will give you the answers you want if you give us the ones you want first.”

“Okay…”

“Have you experienced any OCD like behaviors?”

Thomas was quiet at that.

“I guess that’s a yes,” said Roman.

Thomas ran his hand through his hair. “I know I should’ve told you. I-I’ve been like this for a few years now and lately, it’s gotten worse.”

“We know Thomas. Virgil’s been dealing with the same thing.”

Thomas looked down. “That’s what I was afraid of. Where is Virge anyways?”

“He is taking a nap after the panic attack I’m assuming you experienced as well.”

“Huh, yeah.”

“Thomas, Virgil has pretty bad OCD.”

“Yes, and now we know you have it as well. Thomas, you need to go to therapy for you and Virgil.”

“I- “Thomas didn’t know what to say. He never wanted to admit he had a problem, that he had OCD. He had denied it for years. But now he needed to be honest with himself. He has OCD. “Okay. I will.”

Patton put a hand on his shoulder. “I’m proud of you Thomas.”

“Thanks, Patton. Thank you for helping me through the panic attack.” He looked up at the other two. “And thank you for helping Virgil through it. I bet it was ten times worse than mine was.”

“Of course, Thomas. We just want you both to be okay.”

Thomas smiled at that.

Cried when someone died? when i was at nationals in 2014 a horse got so freaked out when they were putting roses (the prize for winning) on him that he reared up and flipped over himself with the rider still on him (somehow she managed not to get crushed) but the horse snapped his neck once he hit the ground and died instantly and it was so awful to see and i cried for at least an hour and im still scarred

Disney/Non-Disney Questions (Strictly Animated- you’re about to see how sad I am when it comes to animated films)

1. Scene you wish you could live out? Ooooh I love the idea of seeing Atlantica in person so probably the first scene of the Little Mermaid where all the mermaids are swimming into the castle.

2. Do you prefer CGI or Hand/Cell Animation? HAND/CELL ALL THE WAY!!! There is just... an endearing quality to the original hand/cell animation style of movies that I adore. It has a personality. Plus, the contrast of the painted background and the hand-drawn characters is so wonderfully nostalgic and captivating. Furthermore, hand/cell animations takes a tremendous amount of work in comparison to CGI which, whilst I understand why Disney does it CGI now because of it, it makes me feel like I’m watching something with more heart in it because of all the time, sweat and soul that went into it. I could honestly go on and on about hand/cell animation but I shall leave it there. Yes. Hand/Cell Animation will always be my preference.

3. Which fairytale would you like to see animated next? Hans Christian Anderson’s The Wild Swans immediately springs to mind.

4. Favourite voice actress? I’m terribly torn between Jodi Benson and Liz Callaway. I just... I can’t choose! I mean, Jodi Benson was singing/voice acting for both Thumbelina and Ariel (two of my favs). And then Liz Callaway singing/voice acting for Odette, and then singing for both Anastasia and Kiara. How do I choose?!?!?!

5. Favourite voice actor? Has to be John Cusack for me, Dimitri’s voice in Anastasia just melts me and I could listen to it all day. An extremely close second is Gary Imhoff who voiced Prince Cornelius but Dimitri’s voice just gets to me whenever I hear it.

6. Favourite first meeting scene? I want to say Ariel and Eric but it’s hard to say which one counts as their first official meeting... so, I’ll say Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, that whole scene is just pure gold.

7. Mention one Disney related thing that can always cheer you up, no matter how sad you are (scene, song, character, movie etc.): The song “Why Should I Worry” from Oliver and Company never fails to make me smile. Such a classic catchy song.

8. Mention one Non-Disney related thing that can always cheer you up, no matter how sad you are (scene, song, character, movie etc.): Batty from FernGully: The Last Rainforest is easily my answer for this one, every time he’s on screen, my depression fades away for a while.

9. Which scene/s always makes you cry? Oh man, I’m a big cry baby when it comes to movies so I have a few but I’ll name my main ones. Like the ones where I really ball like an idiot.

- Fox and the Hound: when Widow Tweed takes Tod into the woods.

- Thumbelina: a few scenes honestly- when Thumbelina wishes she were big and felt all alone in the world, when Thumbelina is told that Cornelius is dead and when Thumbelina and Cornelius finally find each other.

- Dumbo: when Dumbo finds his mother and cuddles her before he has to leave her again. That entire scene kills me.

- Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron: when Rains gets shot.

- TInkerbell and the Legend of the Neverbeast: when the fairies take Gruff into his cave to go into hibernation for a thousand years (I am not joking one bit when I say that I cried at this for half an hour solid).

- Anastasia: when the Empress and Anya realise that they are indeed family

- Lion King: you know the fucking scene...

10. Favourite Duet (romantic in particular)? It’s an absolute tie between Let Me Be Your Wings sung by Thumbelina and Prince Cornelius, and Far Longer Than Forever sung by Derek and Odette. Whilst there are many great Disney duets, none quite do it for me as much as these two. In my personal opinion, these two perfectly define what a duet should be. They all harmonise beautifully with the other, they use different pronouns sung together, they each have their own part as well as singing together, the lyrics are exquisite... I honestly am such a fan of these songs. If you’re curious, a second place option to this would be If I Never Knew You from Pocahontas (both the pop version and the original version that was cut from the first version of the movie).

11. A couple you wish had sung a duet together? Ariel and Eric. Whilst they did sing together very briefly in Little Mermaid 2, they never got an official duet. I mean, I know Eric didn’t sing at all in the first one but I don’t know... I would have loved to have them sing together.

12. An underrated duet? I mean, my favourite duets are honestly very underrated, but I’ve already mentioned them. So… I feel like Looking Through Your Eyes sung by Kayley and Garrett is extremely underrated as everyone thinks of The Prayer when they think of Quest for Camelot.

13. Name your top three Disney princes/male protagonists: Prince Eric, Flynn Rider aaaaaaand Kovu.

14. Name your top three Disney princesses/female protagonists: Snow White, Ariel and Pocahontas.

15. Name your top three Non-Disney male protagonists: Oh that is fucking easy for me- Prince Cornelius, Dimitri and Derek (Pips from FernGully almost made the cut).

16: Name your top three Non-Disney female protagonists: Anastasia, Thumbelina and Odette (I absolutely adore Crysta but I just couldn’t not include one of the other three… choosing three is so limiting).

17. Favourite sidekick/s? Bartok (Rasputin’s sidekick, I kill myself laughing at his lines), Baymax (Hiro’s sidekick) and Meeko (Pocahontas’ sidekick)

18. Favourite villain/s? Beetle (Thumbelina- he makes me laugh so much), Scar (Lion King), Zira (Lion King 2- she’s such an underrate villain, she is just so set on revenge) and Rasputin (Anastasia).

19. If you were to marry a female/male protagonist, who would you choose? Before, my answer would have been Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid, but now my answer would be undeniably Prince Cornelius. And here is why. When it comes to Thumbelina, nothing is more important. He literally endeavours the harshness of autumn and winter to find her when she’s been kidnapped, and he never stops for one second. The only way he was stopped was when he was forced into water by the wind and was frozen alive. And even, as soon as he’s been melted free, he immediately goes to find her and fight for her. Like, you have to admire that utter devotion and dedication. And when he is with Thumbelina, he takes care of her in every way possible. If you watch him during their duet Let Me Be Your Wings, you’ll see that he always makes sure to have a hold of her when they’re flying. Like when Thumbelina bends down to run her fingers through the water, he has his arm around her waist to hoist her. He lifts her onto the boat where the Toad lives. He catches her when she falls (yes I know that’s a meme where he sings that he’ll never let her fall and then she does but the whole point of that damn part is that, when she does fall, she falls with no fear because Cornelius catches her the next second). He’s so attentive with her and the way he loves her name is just so cute. Also, I really love how he made sure Thumbelina’s mother was looked after by Hero the dog. He is so kind, heroic, skilful and loving. But then he is also funny, cocky (in the nice way), sarcastic, a cutely clumsy sometimes, and has a slight rebellious streak that is so god damn attractive. I mean, he loves flying and literally misses royal events and princely duties to fly around the world. Plus, he literally flies on his bumblebee, Buzzbee, like a motorbike, if that ain’t a badass fairy, I don’t’ know what is. You definitely can’t say he’s boring at all. Okay, that’s covering his personality kinda. Going into physical traits, he is of course extremely handsome. I have always been a sucker for red hair (and now my best friend thinks he is the original reason why). Green eyes… I mean, come on. A damn heart-melting smile and smirk. His speaking voice is as wonderful as his singing, including a hypnotising soft-spoken voice when he gets close with Thumbelina. He’s great with a sword. He shows that he’s good at dancing. And if I got anything from that last five minutes, it’s that he looks like he’s a great kisser. Like the passion in that kiss (for an animation too) is something I’ve never forgotten. He’s not overly muscular but has muscles for sure, but it’s in a slender form. And… you know… he’s a fairy. A fairy prince! I realise I really got into this answer but I really do feel like Prince Cornelius gets overlooked and… ugh, I just love him.

20. A song you love from that isn’t sung by the characters? Baby Mine from Dumbo.

21. An underrated song? A Dream Worth Keeping by Sheana Easton from FernGully.

22. An underrated ballad? Where Do I Go From Here sung by Pocahontas in Pocahontas 2.

23. If you could be friends with a Disney character, who you would you choose? Mushu would be amazing, I’d forever be entertained.

24. Favourite friendship? Robin Hood and Little John.

25. Favourite villain song? In The Dark Of The Night sung by Rasputin in Anastasia. Other contenders are No More Mr Nice guy sung by Rothbart in The Swan Princess, My Lullaby sung by Zira in Lion King 2 and… of course… Be Prepared sung by Scar in Lion King.

30. What animated movies have taught you? To always believe in magic, to be kind even when no-one else is, and that there is nothing wrong with loving animated movies as an adult, animation is for everyone.

BONUS Q: 31. An animated movie that everyone needs to go and watch right now: Hunchback of Notre Dame, I’ll guarantee that you haven’t seen it in a long time and you are missing out one of Alan Menken’s greatest achievements in his musical career and beautiful story with a powerful message.
