Here's a fun idea you said that if he wanted to branch could make his own tribe. well what if he did, where do you think the tribe would live? I'm thinking something like the lash caves from minecraft because underground, and what if that was hundreds of years ago? What do you think folk trolls would evolve to look like? Sorry for late answer, I had a late shift at work, and that didn't leave me with much energy to do anything but have midnight dinner and then sleep XD
The thing about Branch, and his Folk String- yes, he could form his own Tribe and his own genre of music, but I am unsure if he would. Not at least while he travels, and while the events of the first and second movie are taking place.
First it comes down to the fact that he has no idea that the Strings exists and what they even are- and that knowledge would probably change somewhere around when World Tour happens. Even as he travels through the other territories, the topic of Strings just... doesn't come up, so he has no idea what power he holds in his hands (paws XD).
He also just still feels very connected to his own Tribe, no matter how badly they treated him. Especially after he realizes that Poppy actually missed him and was devastated to see him gone. (And sorry to say but my Branch will always be a bit of a simp for her, he is a lost cause in that)
BUT, all that said, entertaining the possibility of him forming his own Tribe...
Him straying underground once more would be very in character- especially as apparently Rock Trolls are subterranean people, in that most of their dwellings are underground and I do headcanon Branch as having a rock troll blood. So he would have never felt comfortable high in the trees like a full blood Pop Troll, but he also wouldnt want to be without any access to sunlight or plantlife.
The Lush Caves are a good idea certainly- and I raise you the possibility of their dwelling be more like the Hidden World from HTTYD XD
Not to the full fantastical extent as in the movies- but with the definition on whimsy and calm, some bioluminescence and giant crystals would be a great conversation piece XD
Chief being the title of the leader also fits- that, or more specifically Chieftain. Branch definitelly doesnt think of himself as coming from line of kings and queens (He is wrong about that in my headcanon buuut that's for another post XD), and so he would never think to use those titles. I think the position would be hereditary- but definitelly not going to the 'firstborn of the firstborn', but based on suitability. Culturaly, I think that would also be most familiar to any troll who who migrates from the large Tribes, where the leadership is definitelly a hereditary position (I think even Country Trolls, despite the Fandom calling Delta Dawn a mayor, do regard her as their queen).
Now for the fun part, the physical changes XD
Honestly that by itself requires a whole another post, since this need to encompass all of the Trolls tribe by tribe, but let me sum it up based on the Major Genres:
Pop: - Colourful little menaces as we know them from the movies XD - Largely arboreal- that means long tails that compensates for balance, and paws with retractable claws used for gripping onto tree bark - All trolls- apart from Classical and Techno- are in possession of fur, or (as one AO3 fanfic writer called it) in possession of 'flocking' XD - Pop Trolls grow thicker pelt in winter and shed it with the coming summer- but in general, it still grows rather fast for some so those trolls took to shaving it down to keep it need (Poppy is one such with unlucky ancient genes when it comes to that) - Before they evolved to use their Hair to the exten they do now, they largely counted on their own agility and ability to jump from branch to branch, and chipped away burrows into the trees - so powerful leg and arm muscles, and comparativelly amazing strenght for beings so small -They definitelly used to be taller than any non-funk trolls, slightly shorter than Biggie, but with the Pop String creation, their hair abilities and the selective survival of the smallest (after all, smaller trolls hid from Bergens' better), they've been getting on average shorter - They do have small hint of fangs, but are largely leaning towards non-meaty diet, though still very much omnivorous
Country: - Centaur-ish; I know movie depicted them with horse bodies, but I headcanon them more in the way unicorns are in old medieval illustrations, ie Artiodactyls - Long tail hair, almost as luscious as their own hair - Pointier ears, clear fangs on top of their large front teeth (since meat seems to be large part of their diet), but not really paws and claws; I would say they are the most carnivorous of all the trolls, raising livestock both for milk but specifically for meat - (diving into the territory of evolution, if they were hunters of prey, they probably chased them and kicked them to death XD) - All in all, not that different from how movie showed them
Classical: - More fairy-like/Hummingbird-like than in the movies - Definitelly still smaller and glittery, but with the idea their skin is not actually glitter like with Glitter Trolls, but either some kind of scale like feathers, or more durable version of the scales like butterflies have on their wings -Two pairs of wings instead of one, and definitelly beating faster to keep them up in the air - No tail- a rarity out of all the Trolls- and their hair is more like bird feathers/crest, in that it can puff up or lay flatter depending on situation - Most likely nectarivous and herbivorous? Making something like 'honey' from their farming efforts XD - The gemstone in their belly is an accessory and not something they all grow naturally- meant to show the troll is grown and ready to join the Orchestra XD
Techno: - Not much to change there- I just imagine their neon and digital looks came much later after decades/centuries being influenced by their string, they used look a little bit down to earth before that - Omnivorous, with crustaceans and molluscs making up for the majority of their animal protein- and probably necessary source of compound their bodies need to be bioluminescent
Rock: - Being looks wise the most similar to Pop Trolls, there was probably some speculation they both came from the very first same ancestor- before the Strings were created - Their flocking/fur is thinner and sleeker, and they don't grow a thick undercoat in winter, but similar to Pop trolls they have paws with claws- only theirs are not retractable - Their tail is also shorter and not as luscious in fur, used more for display than for balancing - Pointier ears for sure, more visible fangs; as mentioned, I think they are supposed to be subterranean? So most of their dwellings is underground- probably to avoid the volcanic ash on top- but I imagine living so close to the sea, they are largely focused on fishing (their angler ships suggests that they have no issue going underwater), probably hunting whatever critter lives in the cavern bellow, and maybe they are using the advantage of volcanic soil to grow some hardier crops? - Living underground with no direct sunlight for days probably gave them killer nightvision while their colours dulled to make hiding in the caves easier
That said, Branch is half and half. Despite his ear deformity, I would imagine they would always be a little pointier than on any other Pop Troll, and he cannot retract his claws (and thus took to filing them down to keep them blunt for safety sake- still sharp enough to help him climb, not sharp enough to hurt) Even if he grew up with his true colours, I'd imagine they would dull as he grew older, going vibrant only if he indulged in the poppiest of songs (or if he performed on stage) He has the tail and the luscious tail-hair of a Pop troll, but his flocking never grows a thick undercoat so he is almost always chilled to the bone in winter, forced to wear padded clothing to keep warm
With the Folk String coming from him, and representing him.... I imagine some of these things would change He'd grow hardier- more temperature tolerant at least- and similar to Rock Trolls, his night vision would grow better. Would any potential Folk Trolls change the same? Maybe? Perhaps more bioluminesce similar to that of Techno Trolls, while their general basic colouring grows more grounded- more into muted pastels and leaning towards greens/aquamarine tones
Culture is hard to pinpoint, as it would be evolving from various established cultures of all the other Major and Minor tribes; who knows what hodge podge it would end up as XD
My mind is full of various headcanons pft- ones that are blanket for all my AUs and ones that are just part of that one specific one- so be on lookout for more regarding that

When it is the opposite.
You are still his secretary by name but, you did anything but that. My Favorite Good Omens Moment:
An Essay on Why It Is Cool and Rad (Part 1)
There's this moment in Good Omens that makes me cackle every time I see it and leaves me full of warmth, so here's an essay on its context and meaning, because explication and analysis are how I show love. I will try to keep my thoughts as tight as possible, but they do have a tendency to spiral outwards, and I am very stoned. Come, sistren, and get nerdy with me.
My favorite moment in the series so far occurs in 1601. To approach it we will first need an assload of context. There's a TL;DR in bold at the end of the Context if you don't fancy reading the whole assload. Key arguments are in italics and bold throughout.
David Tennant gives Crowley a very consistent facial expression every time Aziraphale says something so outlandish Crowley can't quite believe he's hearing it. It's this one:

Chronologically, we see the Eyebrows of Disbelief twice before my fave moment in 1601: once (above left) in that scene on the Garden Wall that familiarizes the audience with Crowley's face before adding the dark glasses, when Aziraphale admits he's given away his sword; once when Aziraphale tells Bildad the Shuhite that he, Aziraphale, has Fallen because he lied to the angels to save Job's children.
The Eyebows of Disbelief always signal surprise and amusement with something Aziraphale has said or done. This amusement is sometimes at Aziraphale's expense and sometimes not.
In the gifs above, Crowley is laughing because what Aziraphale has just admitted to doing is fantastic and unexpected and frankly pretty gd punk rock. He's not laughing at Aziraphale, he's laughing because he is delighted with him. The only record we have thus far of Crowley laughing at Aziraphale is this one:

Crowley laughs when Aziraphale informs him--him, a demon who has personally been through the process of Falling--that Aziraphale is Fallen and must be a demon now. As though of the two of them Aziraphale is the expert on how and under what circumstances this occurs.
And yet when Crowley sees Aziraphale's distress--not his fear of being taken to Hell, but his heartbreak and lostness over the fact that his conscience has diverged from God's stated will--Crowley stops laughing, and instead he acts very kindly towards Aziraphale. He validates the gravity of what Aziraphale has done and assures him he won't turn him in. He sits with him so Aziraphale isn't totally alone (like Crowley probably was) as he goes through the loneliest moments of his existence to that point and picks himself up newly weighted with the secret he must now bear.
And after this scene (in canon as it stands thus far), we don't see Crowley laugh at anything Aziraphale says or does again.
And he really has to work for it sometimes. We talk a lot about the things Michael Sheen is able to convey with his face in Good Omens, and absolutely rightly so; David Tennant earns a chunk of his paycheck in this regard as well. If you haven't given yourself the treat yet, rewatch the scene in Will Goldstone's magic shop in 1941 and focus on Crowley's reactions:

Tennant takes great care to show, with precision, that Crowley is expending effort not to react to Aziraphale's nervous chaos Muppetry and lack of self-awareness. Crowley is self- and socially and contextually aware enough that he knows (better than Aziraphale, at least, which is not a high bar to clear) what's cringe, what's funny, what's ridiculous, how to behave. But whenever Aziraphale crosses a boundary of normalcy, or even sanity, and there is opportunity to laugh at him, Crowley very carefully doesn't react. He doesn't interrupt him, he doesn't try to correct him, he doesn't make fun of him, he doesn't even smirk; he just watches him, as stone-faced as he can manage, no matter how bizarre Aziraphale becomes.
We should be reading this lack of reaction to Aziraphale's social and rational transgressions as powerful positive action. Go watch the Doctor Who episode "Human Nature," or literally any episode of The Inbetweeners, or read or watch Regeneration, and reflect on what it shows you about English masculinity; then consider again the depth of significance in how English- and male-coded character Crowley treats English- and male-coded character Aziraphale in an England created by an English and male-codedpresenting author based off a book written by himself and another male-presenting author. Within its context of English masculinity, Crowley's lack of reaction is not a neutral stance; it is a very fucking loud show of support.
This is not even an inference; it's stated outright in the show. Crowley himself puts it into words 422 years after my favorite moment:

You know how Crowley calls Aziraphale "angel" because the factuality of the descriptor offers him plausible deniability to any Heavenly or Infernal agents who might be listening? Remember how Crowley is a great equivocator? Crowley is equivocating here, too: he's using the cover of what Maggie and Nina will take as a disparaging joke at Aziraphale's expense in order to make a perfectly sincere statement. This is his genuine perception of one of the relationship dynamics he has with Aziraphale and how he feels about that dynamic. Crowley thinks he himself is quite witty (an accurate assessment), Crowley thinks Aziraphale isn't sufficiently self- or contextually aware to hide how strange he is and therefore frequently says and does mad things (also an accurate assessment), and Crowley is Into. That. Shit.
Okay. Now let's look at 1601.
Chronologically it's been almost 1,000 years since we last saw Aziraphale and Crowley. In 537, Aziraphale isn't willing even to consider a labor-saving working arrangement with Crowley of fucking off home out of the damp of Arthurian Wessex; but by 1601, he's worked (and met, and Arranged) with Crowley "dozens of times now," Crowley says, and Azirapahle does not correct him.
In that millienium, Aziraphale has grown to care deeply about Crowley:

Seriously, go back and watch Aziraphale here as Crowley approaches and starts speaking to him: he doesn't start smiling until he recognizes that the person speaking to him is Crowley (but he only smiles at Crowley while Crowley's not looking at him).
And Crowley is definitely become smitten with Aziraphale:

Our man(-shaped entity) is so allergic to work he sets up a meeting to weasel, cajole, or (as it happens) cheat a coin toss to get Aziraphale to do an easy temptation for him in Edinburgh, and then in the same conversation agrees to miracle a play into success because Aziraphale gives him a single hopeful look. Crowley's got it bad.
TL;DR: The Eyebrows of Disbelief happen when Crowley is surprised and amused by something Aziraphale has said or done. Sometimes that amusement is delight with Aziraphale; sometimes it is at Aziraphale's expense. Crowley is aware of this distinction, and when his amusement is at Aziraphale's expense, he suppresses it, even when it takes some effort on his own part, and remains stocially composed. This is equivocation on his part: to Celestial/Infernal operatives lacking knowledge of the intricacies of human behavior, this non-reaction would seem like neutrality; to Aziraphale, who shares with Crowley and the audience the contextual knowledge of English masculinity's utter viciousness, this non-reaction is a profound show of support; and in the safety of support from Crowley, Aziraphale lets his weirdness blossom.
As another meta points out [link if I find it again], we also see in Aziraphale's wordless request about Hamlet and Crowley's immediate understanding of it that by 1601 Aziraphale and Crowley have developed an unspoken, coded method of communication with each other.
Now that we have all of that in mind, here's my favorite moment in Good Omens:

Ixi of Fuck Yeah Good Omens has even kindly archived a closeup of the aftermath, for Crowley, of "Buck up!" In gif 4, above, you can see that the tiny smile is an involuntary reaction that happens as Crowley's eyes widen: for a fraction of a second, he's caught off-guard. In the closeup it's easier to see that he suppresses the smile and gives a tiny shake of his head, Eyebrows of Disbelief heading for his hairline.
There are a number of things Crowley's reaction could mean and what messages it could communicate (we'll get to that in a sec), but regardless, his reaction is, unquestionably, one of surprise and suppressed amusement. This is an aspect of Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship and characters that I like very much, viz., that one of the reasons Crowley likes Aziraphale (though Aziraphale is judgy and occasionally, unintentionally, horrifyingly cruel) is that in addition to being one of the kindest and most courageous beings in existence, Aziraphale is mad as a bag of frogs. Crowley does not know what is going to come out of Aziraphale's lovely mouth next, but Crowley does know there's a good chance he will struggle to believe he's hearing it, and Crowley likes that.
That's what makes this my favorite moment. What makes this moment so cool and rad, though, is its ineffability. We know from the Eyebrows of Disbelief that Crowley is surprised and amused, but any of several things could be read in that almost imperceptible headshake. Like:
What are you doing? or
Why are you like this? or
How can you be aware that you say these things out loud and yet still say them out loud? or
How has my existence come to this? this moment of listening to such insanity?
each of which is a fair and just feeling to have/message to communicate to a man(-shaped entity) who is yelling "Buck up!" at Hamlet.
But that's only if we read Crowley's amusement as being at Aziraphale's expense. And I don't think we should. Because watch Aziraphale here:

He's doing it on purpose. He is shouting a hilariously inappropriate, 100% authentic Aziraphale-brand thing over arguably the gloomiest passage of Shakespeare's famously gloomy play--right after Crowley complains about its gloominess--and he is watching Crowley as he does it. Look at his smile! He knows he's being Deeply Uncool, and he is doing it literally right into Crowley's face.
Remember that we just talked about how by this point in the chronology Crowley and Aziraphale have learned to communicate with each other nonverbally through facial expression? So what does it mean when Aziraphale responds to Crowley's grumbling about Hamlet's gloominess by smiling his minxious Mona Lisa Aziraphale smile, looking right into Crowley's face, and yelling at Hamlet to buck up? Aziraphale, in a carefully coded, carefully Aziraphale way, is joking with Crowley. His silliness in this moment is for Crowley.
So with aaaaaaallllll of this essay in mind, what does it mean that Crowley's reaction to "Come on, Hamlet! Buck up!" is widening eyes, an involuntary twitch of his mouth toward a smile, and then, his eyebrows still showing surprise and amusement, a tiny shake of his head?

I do propose, y'all, on the basis of this web of evidence I submit for consideration, that what we are seeing here in my favorite moment of Good Omens is the ineffable equivalent of Aziraphale and Crowley sharing a laugh.
Crowley's amusement here isn't at Aziraphale, because Aziraphale is eliciting that amusement consciously and deliberately. Aziraphale, in good spirits and happy to see Crowley, uses his Aziraphaleness to offers Crowley not only an opportunity for amusement, but the opportunity to be in agreement with him about what in this situation is funny. They're on the same side of this joke.
And his humor lands just as he wants it to: Crowley, just for a moment, is caught off-guard, and tickled--
But remember, Crowley is worried in this scene about being surveilled ("I thought you said we'd be inconspicuous here"), and he worries about audio surveillance a lot ("Walls have ears"; "Don't say that. If my lot hear [etc.]," etc.), so he's very limited in what reactions he can show or voice. Aziraphale knows Crowley must be perceived by anyone watching or listening to disapprove of his, Aziraphale's, behavior (just as he must be perceived to disapprove vociferously of Crowley's). Both of them know this.

--so Crowley suppresses the smile almost successfully, and shakes his head at Aziraphale, minutely, to say Stop. What you're doing is working, you're close to making me laugh, and if I show how much you have just delighted me, it will blow our cover of "just an Arrangement."
I offer three final data points in advancing my argument that what we see in my favorite Good Omens moment is Aziraphale successfully attempting to joke with Crowley and Crowley recognizing that overture from Aziraphale and being momentarily surprised into a reaction of genuine delight before pulling his face back under control and indicating to Aziraphale that he must stop:
Datum 1. Nothing going on with Crowley's face in this moment is accidental. We know for sure we're not seeing David Tennant react to Michael Sheen here not only because of literally every other point of Tennant's and Sheen's performances in the show, but because Tennant is wearing opaque contacts and sunglasses under film lighting and therefore cannot be reacting to anything more compelling than a level-10-lift blur because Tennant cannot see shit. Crowley's reaction is a deliberate and careful performance choice on Tennant's part, and it's underscored by director Douglas Mackinnon's choice to film Tennant in 1/2 profile to keep Crowley's eyes visible and face readable to the audience. This reaction is supposed to be there and supposed to be meaningful.
Datum 2. The husbands in 1601 is not the only moment in Good Omens when we may be seeing an angel and a demon communicate the message Stop doing that, it makes us look too familiar between themselves with a little headshake:

Datum 3: There is another moment in Good Omens when Aziraphale offers Crowley the opportunity to enjoy a joke with him. There, too, his humor lands just as he intends, so we can use this other moment as a comparison to our 1601 moment. I don't have gifs for it, but go back and watch it, S1E6 49:27-42. Snips below.
Aziraphale says something that surprises and amuses Crowley (he asked Hell for a rubber duck while he was sloshing around in the holy water)--

--but what Aziraphale says makes Crowley smile long before it makes him laugh.

In fact, his laugh, though a genuine cackle, is quite delayed, and he laughs only after Aziraphale starts laughing too.

In other words, Crowley's reaction to Aziraphale offering him amusement they're both on the same side of is exactly the same as his reaction to "Come on, Hamlet! Buck up!" right up until he laughs instead of shaking his head. Here, after Armageddidn't, Crowley doesn't have to suppress his reaction, so he can let the smile bloom; he doesn't have to control his response, so, although it takes him a few extra seconds, he lets the smile turn into a laugh.
But in 1601, it's not safe to laugh at Aziraphale's humor. It's not safe even to smile at him. A single piece of evidence or eye/earwitness testimony that he and Crowley have anything more friendly than the most passing and acrimonious of professional relationships could mean death to either or both of them, and depending on what Falling is like, maybe something worse than death for Aziraphale.

But Aziraphale is so funny, so effervescent for Crowley, at Crowley, that it catches Crowley just for a moment. Crowley's eyes widen and the corner of his mouth twitches toward a smile.
And that's dangerous. If Aziraphale keeps acting so charmingly mad, Crowley is going to laugh, and they can't afford that risk, so he shakes his head at Aziraphale. Stop, or I won't be able to keep a straight face around you.

And Aziraphale apparently receives that message, because he immediately eases off. Less than 60 seconds later we learn that he's deeply concerned for Crowley's safety--and that it's not so much that Aziraphale has Crowley wrapped around his little finger as it is that Crowley has wrapped himself around Aziraphale's little finger like a snake arranging itself on the tree branch it calls home.

In no small part the satire of Mash, particularly in the first half of the show, is tied up with gender performance.
The army represents traditional, stifling and violent masculinity. This is shown through everything from freudian jokes about guns (eg Frank and Margaret's flirtations in The Sniper or The Gun), to Margaret trying to cajole Hawkeye into performing a more traditional standard of masculinity while treating him like a soldier in Comrades in Arms Part 2, to many jokes and comments about (usually) Hawkeye not being a real man in contrast to army standards and various specific army personnel (eg Lyle in Springtime, Flagg in White Gold), to Frank and Margaret's worship of the masculinity of the army ("He's twice the man you'll ever be," re: Flagg and Hawkeye, Margaret's lust for MacArthur, Frank pursuing the sniper in The Sniper in an attempt to be a "real man" in Margaret's eyes, etc) to many jokes positioning the military as a sexually aggressive man pursuing Hawkeye ("Sure, the sun the moon the stars, your high school letterman jacket. Same deal I promised nurse Baker." "A receipt please, and promise you'll go out with other doctors," etc.)
In contrast, the main characters all fail to perform traditional gender in some way, from crossdressing to immaturity to indecisiveness to peacefulness to Margaret's masculinity and Frank's pathetic failure to live up to his own masculine ideals, to just about everything about Hawkeye. His cowardliness, his jokes about not being a real man, his jokes about taking the feminine role in sexual encounters with men and women, even multiple double entendres about his average at best penis size.
Trapper is the most traditionally masculine of the main cast. He still subverts masculinity in some subtle ways here and there, such as the occasional feminizing joke and mentions of not being in great shape, but overall he's the more butch counterpart to Hawkeye's fem. He plays the role of boxer while Hawkeye plays the role of diva in their respective manager/star roleplaying episodes. He's broader and buffer and plays football, often seen playing catch with someone while walking around the compound, while Hawkeye disdains sports and doesn't participate. He reads Field and Stream which Hawkeye derides in Alcoholics Unanimous while making a wry comment about shaving his armpits. A past lover nicknamed him Big John.
And there are many, many jokes about Hawkeye and Trapper being sexual partners. The recurring Uncle Trapper and Aunt Hawkeye gag, if my father sees this you'll have to marry me, for me? only if you put those on, your father and I will tell you what we did to have you, that's when I fell in love with him, etc etc etc. It's constant. In these jokes Hawkeye usually takes the feminine role, though not strictly every time ("Me and the missus," is one exception in As You Were, the dance in Yankee Doodle Doctor is another).
Trapper's masculinity is differentiated from traditional military masculinity in a few ways. Most obviously, Trapper abhors the military's violence. He never uses guns and mocks Frank's obsession with them, he's a healer rather than a soldier, and he's disgusted by the results of military violence on the men on his operating table.
He's also secure in himself. The military's brand of masculinity is strongly characterized by insecurity and overcompensation. Frank is the main representative of this military insecurity - a coward who insists he's brave (The Army Navy Game), a man who clings to a phallic gun to compensate for his sexual and gendered inadequacies (a main theme of The Sniper, perfectly mirrored when the army itself comes in with a vastly disproprotionately powerful automatic machine gun on a helicopter to shoot down one sixteen year old), a homophobe repressing his own attraction to men (As You Were, the original script of George), etc. We also see this in Flagg, who implicitly sublimates sexual urges into violence (seen when he suggestively caresses his gun while describing how he wants to torture a boy in Officer of the Day).
Trapper doesn't need to overcompensate. He's well-endowed physically, he's portrayed as a competent and considerate lover, he's a brave man who doesn't mind being seen as a coward, and he may or may not be attracted to men but either way he's not a homophobe (George) and he doesn't express his sexuality through violence. When Margaret proves herself stronger than him, his response is to be impressed rather than offended (Bombed). When he dances with Hawkeye for a gag, he doesn't mind letting Hawkeye lead.
He's also differentiated in terms of tradition, with the mliitary representing a more propagandic 50s traditionalism, and Trapper representing a 70s, countercultural freedom from tradition. We see this in the way Trapper has plenty of sex despite being married, while adultery is a court-martial offense in the military. It's notable that he's open and carefree about it, while Frank and Margaret are surreptitious and hypocritical in their affair. This lack of traditionalism is also shown in his disrespect for authority, often in direct contrast to Frank and Margaret's worship of it, and his allyship to George who the military would persecute for his sexuality.
So ultimately we can see that while Trapper and the military are both examples of masculine performance, Trapper's masculinity differs from the military's in being more flexible, less violent, less traditional, and more secure. The military's masculinity is far more toxic than Trapper's, particularly in the context of 70s counterculture media, which aligns womanizing with sexual liberation rather than a lack of respect for women, accurately or not.
This contributes to their respective dynamics with Hawkeye.
Hawkeye, we've established, is usually more feminine, and there are a myriad of jokes characterizing Trapper as his sexual partner, as well as the military as a sexual pursuer.
The jokes Hawkeye and Trapper make about their relationship tend towards cozy domesticity. They're Radar's "aunt and uncle," they directly roleplay marriage ("Martha, we're going to have to move, the people upstairs are impossible,") and less directly behave as though married (the bickering in Alcoholics Unanimous, the discussion about naming their pony in Life With Father). Occasionally they're treated as a healthy couple in contrast to Frank and Margaret's toxicity ("While I'm gone, promise you'll go out with other doctors," vs "Touch anyone else and I'll cut off your hands" in Aid Station).
In some instances the jokes lean towards predatory - "If you're trying to get me drunk, it'll work," or "Who is this man in bed with me?" "I followed you home from the movies," but they're always playful, always fond. If Hawkeye takes on a submissive or victimized role in these jokes, it's one he has fun with and discards just as easily in the context of the rest of his relationship with Trapper.
So, it's important to note that Hawkeye and Trapper support each other and look after each other in an equal, enthusiastic friendship. From Trapper ensuring Hawkeye gets to sleep in Doctor Pierce and Mr. Hyde, to Hawkeye supporting Trapper when he wants to adopt a child, to Trapper right at Hawkeye's side as they attempt to procure an incubator, they are there for each other every step of the way. If their relationship is a marriage in some ways, it's a healthy, strong, and non-traditional marriage, an equal and open partnership free of jealousy and insecurities.
Compare that to the military's relationship with Hawkeye. In jokes it's characterized as powerful and predatory, far from an equal partnership. Sometimes it approaches positive - in Carry on Hawkeye, much of the humour is derived from Hawkeye and Margaret's gendered role reversal as she assumes military command of the unit. Hawkeye playfully calls her sir, seductively lies on her desk like a secretary in a porn film, and most notably treats an immunization shot as sexual penetration in a prolonged gag about sexual role reversal. Hawkeye has fun playing a sexually submissive role to a representative of military authority in this episode, but it is a submissive role.
Several of the one-off jokes have a similar sensibility, such as the double entendre of "My bellybutton's been puckering and unpuckering all day," in response to a representative of MacArthur assuming their excitement over the general's arrival to the unit, or Hawkeye's "Okay, take me, I'm yours," to Colonel Flagg. They demonstrate a willingness to play the receptive role on Hawkeye's part, but they also, pointedly, disturb the object of the jokes.
When Hawkeye makes these jokes that sexualize military authority, he's attempting to be provocative as well as defiantly drawing disruptive attention to his own powerlessness as a drafted surgeon. The power dynamic between Hawkeye and the authority of the military only goes one way, and Hawkeye gets a kick out of pointing it out in ways that perturb the representatives of that authority, but it's a power dynamic that takes its toll on him.
Many of Mash's plotlines revolve around Hawkeye rebelling and attempting to seize some scrap of agency back from the military. Adam's Ribs, for example, in which he starts a mild riot over the food he's being fed and spends the episode attempting to procure barbecue ribs from Chicago (which Trapper procures for him), or Back Pay where he tries to charge the military for his forced labour. A particularly notable example is Some 38th Parallels, in which Hawkeye complains about being paid the equivalent of a nickel per operation, and his frustration manifests in impotency until he can perform a gesture of rebellion against the military.
One unfortunate consistency of these episodes is that the army ultimately retains its power. When Hawkeye achieves his goals, it's only in small ways that do little more than satisfy his own need to assert his sense of self. Often, Hawkeye doesn't achieve his goal at all, but is thwarted by the army, such as in For Want of a Boot. In every instance he remains powerless in comparison to the authority of the military.
So the context in which Hawkeye makes these sexualized jokes about the military literally fucking him is one of abject helplessness. In a sense, all he's capable of is pointing out what the military is doing and putting it in his own, audacious terms. He's not capable of preventing it. His jokes usually have an edge of bitterness to them in delivery, and when they don't, that tone is imparted anyway by the greater context.
With Trapper, Hawkeye can play-act a marriage or an assault, but in either case he's an enthusiastically consenting, equal partner. Trapper's performance of masculinity allows for Hawkeye to take any role from victim to wife to husband, and enables Trapper to respond in kind from a position of equality and respect. The military, in its insecure, domineering performance of masculinity, is a dictatorial authority, never allowing Hawkeye perform any role but a feminized, victimized one, and only ever giving him the choice of whether to perform with a wry smile or a sneer.
In short, Trapper is the cool, considerate service top to the military's insecure domineering boyfriend.

Hinata starts having fun in Brazil. Before, he was used to being the small kid everyone thought was kinda cute but never a guy girls would be drooling over, fighting to go on a date with. It probably came down to his size, his biggest insecurity throughout all those years. Even later, when he overcame it in volleyball he never truly overcame the impression other people had of him and the way they constantly underestimated him and thought he was younger than he truly was. In the later months of high school, when puberty started being a bit kinder on his body and made his shoulders broader, his arms thicker with muscle, he still looked like a kid. Even when girls gave him chocolates for valentine's day or confessed to having a crush on him, he could tell what they were thinking. That he was cute.
He tried not to let it bother him but deep down, it always did. So when he came to Brazil and started becoming even taller, broader and stronger, he experienced something for the first time. Never before had he had girls looking up at him, batting their eyelashes like those sexy women in the movies did. Now, they bite their lips, touch him in subtle ways that still express their desire for him. No one had ever behaved like that around him. Like they want him to touch them, to ruin them. They aren't looking for him to be nice to them, they are looking for him to be a little rough with them and he was more than happy to do just that. 
He is still nice, of course. He likes treating a girl nicely, smiling at her, giving her compliments, offering advice when needed. It's just that he also liked getting a little rough every now and then. He enjoyes the new power his now grown up body gives him.
And now that he met you, he enjoyes it maybe a bit more than he should. You met at the beach where he was - as usual - playing volleyball. Hinata caught you glancing at him, admiring the way his tan skin glowed in the sun. You were trying not to stare but still, he could tell. 
"Do you want me to show you a move or two?" He aks you after he casually walked over to you. 
The sun is bright in your eyes and you have to squint to look up at him from where you are sitting in the sand. When you came to the beach you were really only planning to relax a little and enjoy the warm weather but this - spending time with one of the most handsome men at the beach - sounds a lot better than your original plan. Even if it does involve exercising in the blistering heat. 
But to your surprise he leads you down to a more secluded part of the beach. A few trees throw a little bit of shade, a few tall rocks set you apart from the rest of the beach, so high that no one can even see you. The once so loud voices seem dull and far away now. 
"It's a bit easier learning new things when you don't have a bunch of people staring at you, isn't it?" Hinata smiles at you so brightly that you don't even think of questioning his motives. I mean, why else would he have brought you here? 
The moves he shows you are easy enough and truly is a great teacher. Every little detail is observed by him and he never misses a mistake but still he is kind when explaining them to you. He passes the ball to you and tells you how to properly receive the ball. You're not exceptionally bad at it, but it isn't easy either. The ball never seems to fly the way you want it to. 
"Here, let me show you," he jogs over to you and shows you how to place your arms correctly. 
He's standing behind you, maybe a little closer than he should but it doesn't matter, right? Otherwise he would be able to move your hands in the right position, you tell yourself. It doesn't matter that you can feel his warm breath on your neck and your cheek, that his touch erects goosebumps on your skin despite the heat. It doesn't matter that when he retracts his hands he lets them brush against your shoulders and then, when he shows you how to properly squat down while receiving, against the sides of your breasts. You must be imagining it. He probably barely even brushed against you and you're just overthinking it. Aren't you? 
But you don't have time to truly think about it. All you can focus on right now is not whimpering when he places his hands on your hips and pushes you down, lightly and yet strong enough to make it clear that there is no other way for your body to move but the way that he wants it to. Not that you want to do anything but. 
"See," suddenly his voice seems to be a lot rougher, deeper, yet quieter, "if you squat down like that, you'll have a much better angle on the ball when it comes down." 
His body is closer now than ever. His chest is pressing up against your back, you could swear you could feel his hips brushing against your ass. 
All you can do is nod, biting your lip to suppress another whimper that wanted to escape you. Hopefully he wouldn't be able to see the blood rushing into your cheeks. You can already feel the adrenaline rushing through you, your quickened heartbeat was pumping your blood everywhere, to your face, your sweaty hands.. your crotch, your breasts.. maybe you should have worn another bikini, not the thin one you are wearing right now. David: the minute he’s told (or realizes) Angel is chronically ill he internally panics and frets about them and how they treat themselves and how he treats them. He knows Angel has been living with this for a long time knowingly or not, their usual laidback attitude and usual lack of thought towards how they take care of themselves makes him concerned. He’ll focus more on making sure Angel is accommodated for in the home and they can be as comfortable as possible in their house.
David makes sure Angel is also treated well in day to day life. They come home complaining of how they’re getting treated or how they have to go into the doctor and how shit the doctor was to them when they told the doctor their problems he’ll come in next time as scary dog privilege and back up bullshit detector since unfortunately they’ll listen to him better than Angel. David is also on top of any medications and the conditions and location of possible mobility aids. Angel will never run out of medication or misplace any aids they need. If any of their medications have bad side effects or reactions with Angel David’s written it down in detail along with when they started it. Anything needs maintenance or needs to be replaced? There’s already an appointment set before Angel can forget or procrastinate about setting one.
Asher: Asher doesn’t worry like David, Babe is responsible and has their shit together out of the two and they probably have a steady routine; and despite his goofball, carefree personality he’s extra attentive to Babe once he’s told and help them see the positive side of things. Yeah he might try to get out of things but he’ll become their personal runner for anything, he’ll even ask David to try and teach him how to cook again so then Babe doesn’t have to make meals when they’re not up to it or has to power through making meals because Asher can’t really be trusted in the kitchen. He’ll also move anything around to make things manageable for Babe, he’ll also carry them and any mobility aids around if need be any time they ask.
Asher isn’t as intimidating as David off of looks alone, he lacks David’s murderer face, but he is very much a people person and I think he’s able to guilt trip people very well. Someone talks down to Babe or touches their things he makes the person feel so bad the person can’t help but apologize and depending on the situation avoid the two. He’s also naturally Babe’s biggest hype man, things are getting hard for Babe and he can’t do anything? He’s there encourage them and then comfort them after. Physio? Asher’s right beside them being literal support and not backing out no matter how hard they hold onto him or how much of their weight Babe puts on him. Asher is also great with positive reinforcement, if Babe struggles to take or remember to take pills he has a timer and little treats to make it all worth it and bearable few minutes.
Milo: Sweetheart is pretty self sufficient and tries to work through hell and high water so when they crash, they crash hard. When Milo realizes they have a chronic illness he makes it his mission to alleviate their stress and pain. He knows sweetheart is a workaholic and they are set well in their ways no matter how unhealthy it is. He has pain killers, massages and a good show/movie on hand. Even if Sweetheart tries to keep going despite everything Milo will pull out the big guns: ✨Aggro✨. He’ll plop the cat on their lap and sweetheart can help but stay put for as long as possible no matter how frustrating it is to be kept from their work. Milo also makes sure that in sweetheart’s work frenzy they eat well so they don’t feel even worse. He has ice packs, heating pads, pain killers and if worst comes to worst his mother to help manage sweetheart’s conditions.
Milo also makes sure he that they keep any mobility aids in arms reach for them. It’s not that sweetheart doesn’t acknowledge that they need them, it’s just that it’s another thing they have to bring with them that they also can’t cloak the aid so they try to go for as long as possible without it. He’ll start to nag if they’re at home and refuse to use it. Milo will also get sweetheart excellent comfy formal wear for work so they don’t have to wear anything uncomfortable or if they have braces they can wear them comfortably under their clothes and are able to look fashionable. I feel like sweetheart carries enough respect naturally with their job and just the attitude they have on their own they don’t need Milo’s help when it comes to disrespectful people and doctors in the empowered world but both would bounce off each other excellently and damn near kill someone with their words alone.
Sam: in short he is stressed. When Sam finds out Darlin has a chronic illness they shrug it off as ‘not that bad’ and that ‘everyone’s bodies do this.’ that if Sam weren’t a vampire and immortal he’d have had so many years taken off his life by the stress of this revelation alone he’d probably be on his deathbed. In the early stages of their relationship Darlin has nothing but a sketchy ziploc bag of Tylenol/Advil and a brace and/or cane from like Walmart. He goes all in looking for their medical history to confirm what they have if it’s there and if they should be on medication and then takes them in to the doctors for various tests whether they think it’s serious or not. Sam is there no questions to make sure Darlin goes to their appointments and he makes sure Darlin gets answers and proper treatments, he is unbelievably persistent and determined to get their health back on track. He is the ultimate mother hen early on and focuses on getting Darlin into better habits while also keeping them safe from their own recklessness.
Sam later in the relationship is far less stressed since Darlin is considerably more stable. He keeps tabs on their medicine still and can’t help but monitor their condition just incase they try to hide it again as to try and not worry him. In the rare time that Darlin finally crashes Sam comes in with old man comfort as they sit on the couch under a blanket. He uses his lack of body heat as a human sized ice pack, putting his hands on the areas that ache the most and apply subtle pressure while murmuring affirmations of how they’re still strong and how he doesn’t see them as lesser or love them any less for times like this.
If darlin has a cane and Sam picks it up Fred and bright eyes joke that it’s his now and to not rush his weary old man body and a whole bunch of grandpa jokes.

  Now in the reading, your future spouse relationship with their dad is bad. Although their father does regret  his past actions and wants to apologize, but  he causes a lot of issues in both his child and mother of his child life. For some this will involve trying to use their child to pay off their debt. Your future spouse is close to  a few people on their dad's side but not really. He absolutely did have a rebellious phase and Optimus laughs and laments it.

Being at war does not change the fact that sparklings grow up. Bumblebee was raised during war, all he knew was wartime code and contract. Despite that, wartime habit did not stop the inevitable for all young mecha beginning to edge into adulthood. Bumblebee couldn't remain a sparkling forever, and eventually, he reached his rebellious phase.
Bumblebee began to have a bit of an attitude. Being at war made it so that his attitude wasn't anything too terrible, but he took to treating those above him in rank more flippantly. No one particularly minded considering Autobot high command all but raised him, but it was odd nonetheless. Bee marching in and using base glyphs to refer to individuals was new, and it did leave Ultra Magnus disappointed beyond words, but it was nothing to be concerned about. Optimus found it more than a little amusing to be called "Sire" outright. Bumblebee stopped doing that once he was old enough to comprehend that they were at war. So he genuinely found it to be a nice callback to better days even if the others in the room weren't the most fond of being called "Uncle", "Grandpa", or most notoriously, "Old cogger".
Then Bumblebee moved onto talking back. It took most of high command by surprise considering Bee had always been very obedient and soft spoken when he was young. However when Optimus came back from the battlefield and went to visit his ward, Bumblebee was lounging around and more bitter than not when asked to go on watch. The first time he snapped back at Optimus, the Prime was shocked enough that all he did was kneel down and ask what was wrong. Not even Bumblebee really knew. Ratchet however didn't take any slag. The moment Bumblebee called him an old bag of bolts, Bee found himself with cleanup duty for the next stellar cycle. Prowl similarly did not put up with being called "Robo-cop" and promptly landed Bee a position mopping the hall for a few deca-cycles.
The rebelliousness only amped up when Bumblebee went out with a few other younger bots on patrol and came back with engravings all over him, absolutely none of which were appropriate for the army. Evidently he went into neutral territory with his group and decided it would be a great idea to get engravings done for fun. The other younglings weren't much better off looking. Bumblebee and his companions were greeted by a power washer and very disappointed looked from most of high command. To his credit, Bumblebee did not attempt getting engravings from strangers again. His blacking was marked in smudged colors and plating deep grooves that took almost a vorn to fully fade. Ironhide mocked him for his decision on the daily. Sometimes mockery is just the best way to get a point across.
There was a singular time when Bumblebee decided to act like an adult and steal some high grade to try. He'd seen the elder bots indulging occasionally and wanted to know what all the fuss was about. It didn't help that at the time, Bumblebee was still bitter over the whole engraving incident. As such, he felt only a marginal degree of guilt when he took a bottle from Ratchet's personal stash and smuggled it away to his hab. But of course, not having ever been involved with high grade before, Bumblebee didn't know when to stop. He was found sloshed beyond words the next cycle, and no one could even be mad at him. Ratchet laughed until he fell over and Optimus did his best to not let his strangled laughter reach his ward as he moved to drag Bumblebee out. Bee was not at all happy to be put on messenger duty while drunk. But it was his punishment and all of high command laughed themselves half to death watching him stumble along with piles of datapads. Bee was angry about the whole thing for a while, but he got over it fairly quickly once a few stories of the other's first attempts at drinking were shared with him.
Bumblebee was not as rebellious as anyone expected, and so a rather large number of the mecha involved with Autobot high command were waiting for the other shoe to drop. When it did, they were both prepared and panicked. Bumblebee, in his infinite wisdom, thought it would be a great idea to try and backtalk. He had a rather bitter argument with Optimus over being asked to do his job as a soldier. The argument resulted in Optimus actually getting mad at him for the first time and giving him a punishment that Bumblebee didn't expect to hurt so much.
"Bumblebee, I have asked you to go do your patrol three times now. I will not be asking again."
"I didn't ask to be brought into the army! Why should I have to go out and fight?!"
"Because you are an Autobot. You consume fuel that is provided, you recharge in a berth that is secured by us, and your education has been given by fellow Autobots. It is not much to ask for you to stand guard for a few groons."
"That's a bunch of slag! I could have raised myself! I never NEEDED YOU!"
"Bumblebee-"
"If you had just left me where you found me, I would have joined the neutrals and never been part of this stupid war that YOU WON'T END ALREADY BECAUSE OF YOUR RIDICULOUS EMPATHY TOWARD MEGATRON!"
"Enough. You are done."
"Wait, I didn't mean that-"
"What is done is done. If you do not believe you need a Caretaker, then so be it. For the next stellar cycle, you are not my ward. I am your superior officer and you will treat me as such."
"Sire, I'm sorry-"
"You will refer to me as your Commander starting now. I expect you to follow orders soldier."
Optimus left with a sour expression that none in high command had seen him bear since he became Prime. Bumblebee for his part went to Ratchet and cried. The medic was consoling in his own gruff way, but all of high command could do nothing as Optimus kept his distance, trying to make his point. The punishment ended early when Ratchet and Jazz cornered Optimus and gestured over to his crying ward and pointed out that his punishment was a bit extreme and reeked of functionalism.
Things were a little tense afterwards, but everything worked out in the end. Bumblebee got over his rebellious phase once the war amped up and he lost his voice. Part of high command missed his little quips after the loss of his voice, but in the end, it was likely for the best that his desire to act out of line came to a close suddenly. In the army there is no room for disobedience.

it had all started with a snarky little comment from mike about how you just couldn’t keep your hands off him. to which you fired back about how he shouldn’t even be talking about that.
i mean does he not remember literally shoving you into the bathroom at chrissy cunninghams party because he couldn’t wait to walk a mile home??
and of course, being the competitive fuckers you both are, this sparked a little game. who ever breaks first, has to do whatever the winner says. this included no kissing, no grabbing, and absolutely no whispers of anything sexual related.

Fanfic Idea! (Lucemond, modern AU, where Arrax is a kid, Lucerys is his babysitter, Vhagar is an old veteran, and Aemond is a geriatric nurse)
Lucerys was told that he and Arrax were suppose to and visit Vhagar, Arrax's great grand aunt, the last of her siblings, in a nursing home. Apparently, there were signs of her getting weaker (or at least, weaker than she already was) and they'd like Arrax to at least spend time with her before she inevitably goes. Arrax's mother, Syrax, and his stepfather, Caraxes, were supposed to go with him, but an emergency call had them rushing to get out the door. Still, it would be nice for Vhagar to see their younger child.
And Lucerys, intrigued to meet someone who was at least a hundred years old, agreed. When they saw her in the nursing room, Lucerys froze. Vhagar was, in fact, old, but he expected a one hundred year old woman to be laying on the bed with IV drops, barely able to get out of bed. Hee expected her to be on life support with the way Syrax described her. He didn't expect to open the door to her doing lunges with weights. Aside from that, he noticed she was heavily scarred, from her face to her hands to even her feet. He even noticed she was missing a two fingers on her left hand.
She glanced at the door, seemingly uninterested, until she looked down to Arrax barreling towards her. Lucerys noticed her eyes lighting up, carefully dropping the weights in her kneeling position, and opening her arms so Arrax could quickly run to her arms.
She spoke in High Valyrian, her voice thick, powerful for someone her age. Lucerys watched as Arrax spoke, mixing High Valyrian words mixed with common, happily babbling away as he showed her his new stuffed toy, a pearlescent dragon with red spikes.
After he deemed it ok, Lucerys walked towards them. Once Vhagar glanced at him, he immediately greeted her in High Valyrian, surprising her. Not many people know the old language, the Doom, the string of erupted volcanoes, completely wiped Old Valyria off the map long ago, only few survived to ever know the language. They taught their younger generation everything they knew, trying to keep their culture alive through them, even intermarrying to keep their bloodlines pure, to never allow it to be erased. Vhagar was most likely a young girl when it happened, a live witness to the events that unfold, and Lucerys, the History geek that he was, was very interested to talk to her.
Just by his name, she could already tell he was of Velaryon descent. She was old friends with Velaryons, they often came to visit her for a while. She asked who is mother was. He quickly answered that she was a Targaryen. Vhagar huffed, saying he didn't expect the line of white haired brats to produce a Dornish looking boy. It stung a bit, questions of bastardy had always been a sore spot for him, but he shook it off when he saw that he moved on from it, too busy petting Arrax's hair while he babbled on about his school and his new friends. Lucerys placed the basket of treats on her bedside table, an Old Valyrian treat that Vhagar noticed, her eyes softening.
After a few minutes or so, Arrax was sleeping on Vhagar's bed, too tired from the ride and running around earlier on. Lucerys took that as a chance to talk to Vhagar. She was quite an interesting woman, and her life was very intriguing.
She confirmed that she was there, when the volcanoes erupted. She was only four, and it was so long ago, her memories were a bit hazy, but she still told him what she could remember. It was a young woman named Daenys, a Targaryen, who warned everyone of what was to come. Many people didn't believe her, saying that the volcanoes wouldn't erupt, not in such a catastrophic way she was predicting. At that time, Vahagar's family was a loyal friend to the Targaryens, and when they told them the volcanoes will kill them all, they were the first to believe.
Vaghar remembers being on the ship, miles away from Valyria, but the ship still shook from the eruptions. Her home was burning, but at least she and a few others were alive.
She doesn't remember much about their move, but they stayed with the Targaryens, and she made friends with their children. She was close to Visenya, closer to her than any of the others. They were both headstrong, fierce and loyal, ready to protect their own.
They had to be, in order to face the discrimination they endured. They had to flee quickly, and they weren't able to get as much money as they should have, leaving the once proud families forced to work. The Andals were not welcoming in the least, their customs and religions so unlike what they're used to. Some of the Targaryens were forced to change religions to continue to be able to work, and a war was brewing between the people of Westeros and Dorne. There were already offers of money and glory for soldiers, and they cared not much for the glory.
In Old Valyria, it was normal for the girls to fight alongside the men, but it was different in Westeros. She, Visenya, Rhaenys and Meraxes had to prove they could fight just as well so they could earn the money promised.
It was at that war that she lost one of her fingers, she gestured to her index. The Dornish killed Rhaenys, and she and the others went ballistic. She was not careful enough, and, well, she was lucky it was just her finger and not her entire arm. She petted Lucerys' hair, deep in thought. Lucerys was a bit scared she would start having flashbacks and start choking him, but she said that she was wrong about her earlier statement. He looked less Dornish and more like Aegon's brother, Orys, who carried the name Baratheon. He appreciated that.
Lucerys soaked all the information in. She spoke of his ancestors, knowing them personally. She told them of their lives, their little secrets. Did he know that Maegor loved Aenys, perhaps? Oh, his jealous rage when Aenys married someone else was so much like the tantrums he had when he was younger.
That was how they spent their afternoon, telling stories, mostly her recounting her life to him, and he told stories of his own, how their family rose to the top once more, how Vhagar's family was still close lines to hers. Then he asked, a bit delicately, why he never met her, despite their family being friends for years.
She looked sad all of a sudden, the usual energy she had earlier was gone. She looked like she was thinking if she should say something, but the door opened, and Lucerys froze.
His uncle also froze, his eye staring at him as if he wasn't supposed to be there. Aemond then glanced at Vhagar and took a deep breath, ignoring Lucerys and focusing on Vhagar. Lucerys went quiet, looking anywhere else but at them, focusing on Arrax instead, who surprisingly was still asleep. Oh, he is not sleeping tonight.
Aemond took her bp, gave her her dinner, and her medicine, and told her that her visitation time will end soon, before leaving the room.
Vhagar snorted when she noticed Lucerys was still looking at the door, making Lucerys blush at being caught.
She told him not to worry about it, that Aemond was just acting grumpy because he usually talks with Vhagar at this certain time of the evening, asking questions of his own. Lucerys wanted to ask what they usually talked about, but kept silent instead. He told her that him being cold to Lucerys was less likely about that and more likely because he cut out his eye years ago, intriguing Vhagar. He told her how he didn't even remember what the argument was about, that all he remembered was Aemond picking up a huge rock and aiming it at Jace, his older brother, and he acted out in pure instinct. He didn't expect Vhagar to laugh.
"So you're the little brat that brat was talking about." She cackled, leaving Lucerys confused.
She patter him on the shoulder, and told him not to worry about Aemond. She also told him that it was getting a bit late, and that Arrax should be getting home now. She hinted not to secretly that he'd like them to visit again some time.
He thinks he will.

The protagonist is the mastermind in this one, so the reader gets to see every detail of what goes on in her sick mind. She is not a good person. She's tough, smart, and independent. Those are bad traits for a noble woman who is supposed to quietly marry. How can such a woman survive without kissing a** forever? She's willing to shed blood to find a way to inherit her house and become great. Decide for yourself if you like her or not.
Verta Alberhart is the main character. Make no mistake. Don't expect her to be outshone or outfoxed. Her losses are minor, and she always gains power in the end. She stole the body she inhabits, out of spite. She wants beauty, and power, and men. In any other story she would be the villain, but the men she defeats are far worse than her.

Verta Alberhart WAS a depressed, suicidal girl with an abusive fiance. Her beauty means nothing to him. He likes having multiple women at his beck and call, and he finds her innocence annoying. He has bothersome fetishes as well. Verta is gorgeous, so her fiance wants to watch his right hand man kiss and fondle her. She's not into it, but he doesn’t want a boring wife.
Her life has been hell for years.

Jean Lawrence is a pig who sees women has objects to be used. Verta's father doesn't care about her pain. He just wants to ally with the Lawrence family...to do illegal trade. It's a messy situation, but Verta is too spineless. There's always a way out. Verta chose self harm because she could not see her own power.

Rita wants that power. Rita WAS the daughter of a Baron, but her mother was weak. She was seduced by a powerful Marquis named Proud Carter. Carter used their short affair to discredit her...and her daughter. Rita's legitimacy was questioned. She and her young mother were cast out by the Baron. Her mother chose death. Rita worked as a waitress, but her body grew weak. Her lungs collapsed and she is cursed to die young of natural causes.
Verta. Stupid, depressed Verta...visits Rita in the hospital out of pity. She complains about how she wants to die, even though she is the gorgeous daughter of a Count.

Rita steals the body and life Verta hates so much. Verta quickly dies of lung disease. The wizard that did the deed helps our Verta from behind. His face changes multiple times throughout the story, because he is a criminal who wants to return to his beloved homeland.
Ian, Verta's butler, is a rat under Jean. He "teaches" Verta how to be a good and coquettish wife for Jean. He has no feelings for her. He just wants to keep his position and money as a noble butler.
He dies.

This is the man Jean uses on Verta like a sex toy. He has an unrequited love for the pathetic lady, and yet he assaults her on command. Verta drugs him, which causes him to fly into a rage and kill Jean. Which frees her and punishes him for the wrongdoings he had endless excuses for. Verta begged for suicide, and yet this man just kept letting Jean treat her like trash. While glancing at her wistfully.

With Jean gone she starts to make allies. This is the prince, Brandt. He's an innocent man who is a little obsessed with defeating Proud Carter. The man who poisoned the beloved previous king. Brandt is weak to beauty, and Verta's sweet lies. He is hopefully not the final love interest. Verta is actually honest and not fake cute with her favorite man.

This is Blaine, Verta's highly devoted and dirty partner in crime. He is under her thumb and he loves it. He wants to marry her, but he's ok with being used. He slaughters her kidnappers. He becomes her lover, and he says he wants her to be his. He was jaded about women before, but he's pretty chivalrous. He just wanted a smart woman to romance, not a uneducated frilly burden. Verta's gorgeous face sweetens the deal. I think he qualifies as a very high quality yandere. Verta raises him into a loyal dog, and he's a talented manipulator...who uses his skills and his sword for her benefit.

Then we meet Rosalie Amber. In any other story she would be the protagonist. She's a caring and gentle beauty, with a cold face. Under that she's soft and pure. She works tirelessly at a women's shelter, and she thinks in black and white. Rosalie is what an ideal protagonist would be...so everybody makes fun of her. She is widely known as a naive fool.
She has a fiance who is well under her station, and he's clearly Carter's man. He barely shows interest in her, and he talks down to her in public. Rosalie's lonely charity case personality has made her bad at socializing and romance.
Verta kind of uses her, and she drastically improves her life. Verta seduces Nathan, her insecure but handsome fiance, on her stepmother's orders. Rosalie's stepmother believes she deserves better, so Verta offers to ruin him.
She does.

Yersha, the wizard, takes Nathan's body as payment for all of the favors Verta has received. They both leave their identities as Yersha and Rita behind. Yersha plans to leave the country in Nathan's body, and he plans to change his identity again. Body switching magic is rare, but not some kind of godly power. There's a ton of crime and intriguing stuff here. No sparkles.
Then Rosalie is free of her rat fiance. Verta gets a truly loyal friend, and an alliance with the stepmother (who is more useful than Rosalie)
Blaine is by far the best candidate for love interest, but Brandt is becoming more possessive too. The men Verta chooses to keep around also respect her strategic decisions. This is a very good story, but the evil does get hammy sometimes.

With April showers, Letters from Watson brings us the first installment of The Sign of the Four, a prospect that makes me quake. When I was a tot of eight years, reading the library's copy of The Boy's Sherlock Holmes with a creeping sense of guilt because I was not at that time (and have not been at any time before or since) a boy, I found The Sign of the Four... long. Very long. I was obviously too young for the concepts, even though I could make sense of the words. (That sums up a lot of my reading in that era.)
I'm also reeling from last week's "The Man with the Watches," an utter tragedy of "be gay, do crime."
What's striking me this time -- what with the introduction of Holmes' cocaine use and also the watch deduction that raises a wince and a shudder from anyone who remembers that BBC Sherlock happened -- is how Watson is being positioned (and I don't mean "positioned in the path of which bullet," though apparently he got hit by more than one while in India).
Cocaine
Watson is progressive! His objections to cocaine sound so mild to us in the twenty-first century, but in 1890, scientific opinion was just barely starting to turn away from seeing cocaine as a wonder drug. It was used for local anesthesia as well as for general pep. Queen Victoria drank Vin Mariani, a wine fortified with cocaine, and so did the Pope. Coca Cola contained cocaine until 1906. Sigmund Freud was a vocal proponent of cocaine for improving mood and performance, until he botched an operation in the early 1890s while high.
A couple hair-raising reads on this topic are Cocaine: The Victorian Wonder Drug and A Cure for (Anything) that Ails You: Cocaine in Victorian Medicine.
So Holmes' original audience would have seen him as an up-to-date scientist using a socially approved means of moderating his mood. His shooting up a 7% solution of cocaine is about equivalent to a 21st century person taking nutritional supplements that are meant to boost brain power.
After all the "say no to drugs" education in the American school system, that's so hard for me to get my brain around, but there we are. Holmes is doing something no more troubling than pouring a glass of whiskey and much more scientific.
Watson, therefore, can be read either as being right at the edge of shifting scientific opinion or as being a fussbudget.
Tinge it with romanticism
I'm firmly Team Watson when Holmes starts criticizing A Study in Scarlet:
He shook his head sadly. “I glanced over it,” said he. “Honestly, I cannot congratulate you upon it. Detection is, or ought to be, an exact science, and should be treated in the same cold and unemotional manner. You have attempted to tinge it with romanticism, which produces much the same effect as if you worked a love-story or an elopement into the fifth proposition of Euclid.”
The reader is being positioned here to view with contempt the exact features of the work that we probably enjoyed. Poor Watson!
Is it possible that some reviewers commented on the melodrama of the Lucy portions? Yes, and it'd be a valid point. Nonetheless, having experienced a good many math classes, I think the fifth proposition of Euclid might be improved by a rom--

Doyle, you magnificent bastard.
Flatland: A Romance in Many Dimensions was published in 1884. It wasn't a huge success, but it seems likely Doyle could have known it, and it did, in fact, mention a love story in a discussion of angles. Back when I read it in college (because if you "liked math," someone would inevitably give you a copy of Flatland), I missed the social satire but appreciated the geometry.
Watson is canonically an effective popular writer, and I refuse to denigrate him for that.
The Watch
First, Holmes substantially invents forensic science with his monographs on tobacco and on callouses.
Then we learn that Watson is a second son, which fits with his his training for a profession and choosing the army to help make his way.
Watson was not on great terms with his brother before his brother's death. Holmes doesn't explicitly deduce this, but it's there to be deduced. Holmes knew Watson's father was long dead, which could have come up in any number of casual ways. Holmes had no idea that Watson had a brother, so Watson:
Didn't mention the brother in any context, ever.
Didn't set up any framed daguerreotypes from his childhood nor any modern photos made with the collodion process. Having a posed family photo would have been so completely normal, as would being sent new photos by family members.
Never interrupted his routine to visit his brother while living with Holmes.
Did not attend his brother's funeral (unless it took place while Holmes was away) and did not wear a black armband for mourning in Holmes' presence. Neglecting mourning for a relative would have been a sign of serious estrangement.
Holmes is possessed of some level of tact in not expanding on this topic.
Watson is also nobody's fool: he knows there are ways to fool a mark with apparently miraculous knowledge.
The question in my mind is this: did Watson deliberately distract Holmes from asking what was the subject of the telegram?

All in the Family Part III: Feyre the Harbinger
Pre-reqs: Part I | Part II
No content warnings, just some minor Mor slander.
Welcome back to my series on ACOTAR and Family Systems Theory! Today’s topic is how systems react to change, generational patterns, and special considerations in family integration.
When we last left off, we discussed the IC family system that, while dysfunctional, maintained relative balance as long as everyone played their roles in the nuclear family emotional process (NEFP). As a refreshers, the NEFP is how anxiety moves through a family: 
Mor feels anxiety about Az's feelings for her, and she passes it off to the boys. Cassian steps in the middle of the conflict at Mor’s unconscious request and takes inappropriate responsibility for Azriel’s feelings of rejection and Mor’s anxiety. Thus Mor doesn’t have to deal with her emotions and Azriel suppresses his feelings once more. Everyone plays their part, and balance is restored until the cycle starts again. 
Now we’re going to talk about how Feyre is a harbinger of change for the IC’s dynamic. Let’s look at the IC pre-Feyre:

So let’s think about how Feyre enters the IC. She and Mor develop a friendship, and Cassian treats her with affection like he does Mor, though without all the touching. Azriel seems to like her well enough. Amren is Amren. And Rhysie boy is OBSESSED with her and will never side with anyone against her. Feyre has power over Mor, Azriel, and Cassian when she becomes High Lady, but she also has power because of her relationship with Rhys, the most powerful person in the family. What will this do to our system?

Mor, girl, you good?
I’ve added some new lines to represent the significant changes once Feyre enters the scene. The big gold blob between Feyre and Rhys is to represent their mating bond, which is canonically a stronger and more important relationship than all others. In this system, it’s the most significant relationship and the alliance that wields the most power. If Feyre and Rhys agree on something, it will be done.
The pink arrow between Feyre and Mor represents what to me is the compensating balance to the system. Mor develops a friendship with Feyre because that’s what keeps everything in harmony. She approaches Feyre with much more interested than we ever see toward Nesta or Elain, even when they're both in the arguably identical position of being romantically involved with her brothers.
And that, to me, is odd. Especially considering how Feyre first enters the system as opposed to her sisters.
Imagine this: your beloved family members returns home after having been held as a prisoner and the first thing he says when he sees you is how he fell in love with some girl. Excuse me???? Putting aside the fact that Rhys trapped his friends in Velaris against their will for the good of the city (arguably the same situation he was in UTM), wouldn’t you be a little put out? No hi hello I love you nice to see you, just she’s my fucking mate? I’m sorry sir but, who??!?!?!?!
Nevertheless, Rhys returns to his family saying he’s met the love of his life, and suddenly this person even before she’s present holds a great deal of power in the system. Rhys’ closest relationship is no longer Mor, it’s Feyre.
Remember that Mor is the most likely source of anxiety in the family. This displacement really unbalances her, I think, removing the moderating presence between her, Cassian and Azriel. So what do we see her do? Throw in hard for Feyre. IMMEDIATELY she tries to get Feyre alone to start establishing a relationship with her new symbolic mommybestie.
We also see her hanging out with the other two boys a lot, together or just Cassian alone. I have to wonder if that was the norm before, or what changed when Rhys was UTM. Now that Rhys is absorbed in Feyre, Mor is using that buffer in earnest. Without Rhys to balance them, she pingpongs between Cassian and Azriel through a lot of ACOMAF, enough so that Feyre, who just met them, notices it on several occasions. 
And this is not to downplay that Mor likes Feyre and they’re genuine friends. I’m more so saying that even if Mor disliked Feyre, it’s not likely she would’ve made that public. She needs her relationship with Rhys to be strong enough to justify her place because of the anxiety she brings to the system. The way to stay chill with Rhys is to stay chill with Feyre. We see that over and over and over.
Thankfully (?), Feyre is more than ready to integrate into the existing system. In fact, she reinforces Rhys’ power and acts as another moderator between everyone. She notices the weird Mor/Cas/Az triangle but has no outward reaction to it, doesn't even bring it up to Mor who is supposedly her friend, which in the sense of the system is accepting and condoning it to continue. She doesn’t question the family rules or interrupt the NEFP. Feyre generally wants everyone to get along all throughout the series. Do we ever see her disagree with anyone besides Rhys? Because I genuinely can’t remember her in an argument with anyone in her family besides him and her sisters.
So in summary:
Feyre temporarily unbalances the system by diverting a huge amount of Rhys’ attention and care.
The system rebalances though Feyre and Mor’s friendship and Feyre’s tacit endorsement of the IC’s rules, the power structure, and the NEFP regarding the buffer triangle.
Feyre's entry reveals the weak points in the system, like the buffer, as well as the HUGE dependence on Rhys as a moderator for everyone else. This sets the stage for the Archeron invasion to take the whole thing down.
Let’s talk a little about family rules before we wrap up.
All families have rules, some spoken and most unspoken. Rules can be things like we always have dinner together, throwing things when you’re mad is not allowed, children have to wear helmets when they ride bikes. They can also be things like don’t tell outsiders our business, do whatever dad says when he’s drunk, don’t show your feelings ever. The IC has some rules I want to highlight, one being: don’t bring home a love interest.
In all the 500 years, why are all these kids still single? We never hear of any long-term relationships of any significance until ACOSF. None of them have partners or lovers worth naming. What the hell? Is the mating bond that sacred, even though it's so rare, that you assume you'll fuck around until you hopefully find it? Personally, I don't believe people work that way. I think we crave companionship and love that we don't get from our families. There's between an 81-86% chance you will be married at some point in your life, and I know America isn't Prythian but it feels against the odds that ALL of them are unpartnered without some other explicit reason why.
The important thing to remember is that all rules have a source point, like those laws that say don’t drive with an alligator in your car or whatever. Someone did this thing once and it was bad, so don’t do it again. Often the source point goes back many many generations, but with the IC I think it’s what happened between Mor and Cassian when they were seventeen. Love in the friends group = bad. So let's never talk about it again, until these three fuckin' humans show up and goddamnit we have to.

Mainly my strange idea of what the songs in the Hazbin Hotel series represent. I don't know how much of this can be called a theory, but there were a few things that caught my attention. Apart from the wonderful performance of the songs, I feel they are very important to the storyline itself.
There are also some thoughts on Charlie <3
Episode 1 "Overture" - do songs have power?
During the story at the beginning of the episode, specifically the bit about Lucifer, I got the impression that Charlie greatly admires his father for being a dreamer and imaginative. Probably because they both share these qualities. Charlie is also a dreamer as evidenced by the very idea of running a hotel for sinners.
The very portrayal of Lilith and the pointing out that she motivated the demons with her voice and songs, making them grow stronger. I think the songs play a bigger part in the storyline than you might initially recognise.
The songs in the series are sung consciously, everyone around is also aware that someone is singing a song. It is not portrayed as in other TV series or musicals that someone's song is natural to those around them and invisible as, for example, in High School Musical, where the characters sang and it was part of their world. In Hazbin Hotel, when the characters sing, everyone around them knows it and may wonder why someone is singing at that particular moment. The characters sing because it is important in some way - you can see this with Charlie. The song 'Happy Day in Hell' gives her strength when she has to go to meet the angels. She is motivated and full of energy. And before the song she was quite worried about the meeting or even nervous. The same is true in other episodes when the characters sing. The songs allow them to open up to others in some way ('Loser,Baby'), to reveal their fears ('Poison'), to seek motivation ('Happy Day in Hell' or 'Whatever it takes'), to show their strength ('Stayed Gone'). The songs carry a message and are not just embellishment or variety to the episode.
Lilith also sang, and Hell grew. That's my theory on the songs in the series.
Something that puzzles is Lilith's disappearance itself. What could have prompted the queen of Hell who made the place flourish to leave? To abandon her beloved daughter and the sinners she cared for? Something serious. Maybe Lilith herself wanted to stop the extermination somehow and that's why she disappeared to somehow solve it. Another theory is that maybe she disappeared for 7 years because she is trapped somewhere? Maybe the angels, knowing that it was thanks to Lilith that Hell was growing stronger decided to capture her?
We also clearly see Charlie's problems with the persia she has put on herself. It seems to me that in the story itself at the beginning she portrays herself as a saviour on whom there is great responsibility. She feels that she has to do something great to match her mother, particularly as she is not with her now. It seems to me that Charlie greatly admires both his parents and puts them on a pedestal by which he tries to meet the impossible - the salvation of sinners.
Charlie tries very hard to be good. She doesn't offend anyone and chooses her words to praise people, but also to point out faults. She's not naive, but maybe she's trying too hard to be good? Something to the effect that she tries to be as good as possible, but in a way it holds her back? Somewhat related to this pressure she puts on herself to match her parents because she admires them so much. It's as if Charlie thinks that being good to others and passing on that goodness will fix everything, but it's as if she doesn't take action to stop the evil. It's as if she thinks that any use of her position as princess of Hell or her powers involves doing something evil. This was the conclusion I came to in the episode 'Masquerade' when Charlie saw how Angel was treated by Valentino. It was a moment where I thought Charlie would snap and use her power to actually improve Angel's situation, e.g. freeing him from Valentino's hands by taking away his contract, or forcing Valentino to treat Angel better. After all, Charlie is Lucifer's daughter? She probably has the power to do it herself, but Angel's objections were enough to make her stop. I think this shows that Charlie is afraid to stand her ground and fight back when she sees opposition from those she cares about even if she sees them getting hurt. It's just my opinion, but Charlie kind of chickened out at that point. It makes me wonder what needs to happen for Charlie to finally have the courage to stand firmly on her own.
