10 fandoms / 10 characters / 10 tags
Tagged by the lovely, wonderful @virgo-dream, and so sorry for taking so long to answer this. Really, really sorry, dear.
I'm not going to tag anyone because I think everyone already did this so, for those who hadn't, this is your sign to do it (and tag me to see it).
1. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Start Trek)
My personality was based solely in this man for a long, long time. The sass, the "I don't care" caring type, his relationship with Kirk e Spock, the eyebrow lift. I love this man very dearly to this days and I'll never, ever stop saying so. I wanted to be a doctor for him, can you imagine?
2. Peter Pevensie (The Chronicles of Narnia)
Something something older siblings doing what they can for their younger siblings. He is here not only because he was hot as fuck in these movies, but because he was a good brother or, at least, tried to be. I sympathised a lot with him and his way of being for a lot of reasons but mostly because I was always the one to care for my friends and sibling when we were young.
3. Hob Gadling (The Sandman)
I found Hob Gadling recently and while in a dark period of my life. It would be a lie to say that this stubborn, possibly-crazy and completely charming man didn't charm me the instant I saw him (And I'm not saying only bcuz of Ferdie, okay?). His endless hope in humanity, in the future, in the little things made me happy for being alive again, you know?? Of sitting back and just enjoying the simple fact that I'm breathing. That I can listen to music when I wish to. That my family is one call away from me. That I can go to college. That I have food in the fridge. It may not be much for many or something so common that people overlook it, but I'm here, I'm alive and I can see the world changing again and again and I just guess Hob made me realise that, you know? So yes, Hob goes in this list.
4. Jiang Cheng/Jiang Wanying (MDZS)
Angry Jiujiu who cared too much, got hurt again and again for that, lost literally EVERYONE but kept going. Did he do wrongs? Yes, a lot. Does he need to go therapy? Yes, a lot. Do I love him still? Yes, a lot. It's just that, whenever I see this man, the only thing I can think about is how precious he is, how much he cared for his whole family despite always being compared to others, always being called angry and undesirable by society (That hit a little bit too close to home, but okay) but still helping it, still out there doing his part. Everytime I think of him, I gain strength to go through whatever it is that I'm going through because "If Jiujiu could do it, I can too".
5. Shang Qinghua (SVSS)
Shang Qinghua is just a little guy, a crazy little guy who writes porn for a living and gets dragged in his own world without wanting to. He is very unassuming, very overlooked, but he is fucking crazy and he will kill a lot of people if they as much as look at his King wrong. This man literally wrote himself the man of his dreams and THEN he got him. THEY GOT TOGETHER. If that isn't every writer's dream I don't know what that is. But, mostly important, I support Shang Qinghua's right, but his wrongs are much more interesting.
6. Kiki (Kiki's Delivery Service)
I love that little witch, okay? She is a little sweetheart with so much love, hope and wonder for the world!! She works so hard!! She is so brave!! I love her, okay?? And her movie is beautiful too!! The strength of learning how to rest, how to let things flow is amazing. It would be a lie if I said I don't see myself a lot in her, you know? Specially regardings on the resting side lol. That one is not easy.
7. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Top Gun)
He is crazy. He is unhinged. He is reckless. He is self-sacrificing. He loves with his whole heart (which means he grieves with his whole heart as well). When I first watched the movie, years ago, I promised myself that I would be like him (And Goose) as much as I could. That I would laugh freely, that I would be bold, that I would be as strong as that crazy little man who doesn't know when to stop and reaches for what he wants without fear.
8. Kaldur'ahm (Young Justice)
Do I need to say more? Do I? This mas was literally perfect. Good person, respectful, good leader, cared about his people, was hot as fuck. He was fucking amazing and would do anything to assure that his team would get out of their mission alive and as well as they could be, even if it meant sacrificing himself.
9. Mulan (Mulan)
Badass queen who made me who I am today. This woman wasn't afraid of anything. She was a badass who fought for what was right, fuck what people thought of her or of the way she was dressing. She would do what was right, no matter what. I love her for that (And Shang as well, I love Shang a lot. The couple that made me realise I was bisexual years later). Simply amazing.
10. Reyna Avila Ramirez Arellano (HOO)
A queen. Never did nothing wrong, always has to put up with everyone's bullshit. Adopts a lot of little siblings, an amazing person. I love her and I had a MASSIVE crush on her when I was younger.
Honourable mentions (because they deserve it)
11. Porco Rosso (Porco Rosso)
I love that idiot, okay? He pretends not to care but he cares so much, he loves so much and he just wants to help. He is tired of the capitalism and everything, he just wants peace and to be left alone with his own things and plane. I love him a lot.
12. Merida (Merida)
I always saw her relationship with her mother a bit like mine with my mom. Merida just wants to be free, to do what she wishes to, be seen by what she is. She loves her little siblings, her mother and her father and even though she has no patience, she is never unkind to anyone. She is simply amazing.
13. Adam (Frankstein)
He was a monster (literally) but he was more human than many people out there. There was so much wonder in his being, he loved so much, cared so much and he just wanted to be cared and loved in return, but even his creator turned him down, even his creator recoiled from him and that made him suffer so much.

omg mdzs!!!!!! congrats to see you getting into that!! do you have a fav character?
God the better question is WHO DONT I LIKE????
obviously obsessed with Wei Wuxian the prettiest little shit ever. He is nicknamed Bestie. I have a lot of feelings about him but mostly I think he is shojo manga heroine levels of wonderful and I love him for that.
Then we got Lan Wangji who has some of the BEST sass. I loved him in the drama because his acting was so good despite so few lines, but omg in the book is is AMAZING. The scene where they play tag bdsm style??? Obsessed he is baby. Also the novel makes me think he's ASD coded which makes me very happy yes.
His nickname is Boyfriend because of course. He is also shojo manga levels of heroine and hero and he rocks it. I will gift him many bunnies and ribbons to tie up wwx with sjsjfjjs.
Tumblr media
I could watch them watch each other for hours ajdjjdjsjjd I'm usually good at not shipping real life people but god....please give me strength their bts videos are just sjfjkakfkks.
Then we get the other characters who all have important nicknames as well. Wen Ning is Puppy Bestie because he is a puppy. Im honestly in shock that his actor is actually one of the oldest cast members because um what????? This baby be 30+?????
Tumblr media
I loved him and his sister so much and was so upset that her death was just like off screen????? Excuse me????? For my queen?????
Tumblr media
She is Queen Bestie of course. I worship the ground she walks and honestly I need fix it fics. Also her friendship with wwx was so good????? Like I just wanted them to bffs why did they do her dirty whyyyyy.
Jiang Cheng is Angry Bestie. I don't need to explain myself. Boy needs therapy. I will not be the one offering it to him though he too much for me.
Tumblr media
Or just give him bunnies I guess. I wish we spent more time on him and wwx reconciling but thats what fics will be for!
The youth kiddos are baby besties. A-Yuan gets an extra high pitched squeal added to his name because he is extra baby
Tumblr media
I can't decide if they are my favorite but I'm so excited for all the fics about them being a family SO EXCITEDHDJFJKS (send recs if you got any btw)
Took me a while to warm up but Jin Ling was great and his scenes with wwx was just so much fun to watch. Also the actor is like the same age as lwj's and I'm like????? The skill to act that much like a whiney teenager. Amazing.
Tumblr media
(Please send me fics where his parents are alive I need them I need them like air)
(Also side note: making the fearsome historied terrifying Yiling Patriarch afraid of doggies???? Genius!!!!)
Jiang Yanli made me sob so many times cause I spoiled myself early to not get attached to the characters who die but then of course I was an idiot and got attached anyways. She is Soup Bestie or Sister Bestie. Depends on the day.
Tumblr media
The best part of their dynamic was me realizing I have chaotic middle child energy like wwx. And she's such a good big sister like she made me want to call my own and tell them I love them and thanks for making that god awful kraft Mac and cheese with soy sauce and Broccoli and did I mention I cried a lot? Like so much (please send fix it fics kthnx)
Lan Xichen is Brother Bestie but honestly he should really be the Number 1 Wangxian Shipper and Wingman.
Tumblr media
Boy knew his lil brother was pining over a dead evil guy for decades and supported him. We stan.
I just realized I didn't give Nie Huisang a nickname oops but also i saw somewhere that his idea of faking incompetence so other people will get shit done is genius. I love him, I want to be him. Hence forth he shall be known as Girlboss Bestie.
Tumblr media
^me every goddamn day of my adult life.
I kinda hate myself for this but I also have a soft spot for Xue Yang. He's such a petty little piece of shit but also his crazy and evil vibes were just so good. I think I wouldn't have felt the same way if I read the novel version first instead if the drama, but god did I love the way this actor brought him to life. He is called Psychotic Bestie and he wears that title with pride.
Tumblr media
This scene did so many things to me it must have been bait but yes twas I, the baited.
Would personally like to sue mxtx for the emotional abuse that was the Yi City arc thank you. Blissfully ignoring canon to say that the moment Song Lan left that city A-Qing and Xiao Xingchen came back to life from the power of gay vibes and found family alone thank you very much.
I can't fit anymore gifs but the short answer is I love everyone I'm so deep deeeeeep deep in this and I think I'll be in here for a while

(Part I) (Part II) (Part III) ---
Wen Ning spends ten minutes, or maybe ninety years, trying to make them all tea because difficult conversations (with feelings) always go better with tea, but he can't concentrate on anything other than the way it felt when Lan Zhan's fingers slid away from his head, the ultimate devastation on Wei Ying's face. First he forgets to turn the kettle on. Then he forgets to notice when the little electric button has clicked. Then he forgets to check if there's a tea Wei Ying will actually drink and then he realizes that he never put water in the kettle in the first place, and by then he's on the verge of tears. Curled in on himself in defeat, he sits down across from Wei Ying at the table. It puts him beside Lan Zhan, and Wen Ning instantly knows he's made the wrong choice-- now they look like a united front, against Wei Ying, when in reality they're--
But wasn't that what happened? Wen Ning has ruined his best friends' epic romance. He is the worst person in the entire world. That's probably not true, his therapist's voice says, in his head. Shut up, Wen Ning tells her. I deserve to feel awful about this.
Positive thought requires practice, pipes in Ten Habits Of Sustainable Self-Care. Shut UP! There's pressure on his wrist. Warm: Lan Zhan's fingers. Wen Ning opens his eyes and realizes he's got his fists pressed to his forehead, hunched over. He forces himself to drop them to his lap. There's probably red marks from his knuckles on his face. Lan Zhan is going to be so embarrassed he ever kissed him. What a thing to think, now. He's the worst.
He stares at Wei Ying's hands, fidgeting with each other and the woven string bracelet he wears, so he doesn't have to look either one of them in the eye. Lan Zhan's phone makes an appearance on the table. There's a corner of the phone case, over the power button, that's come up; Lan Zhan thumbs over it, and over it, and clicks at the app on the screen. "Wei Ying," he says, through the auto-toned female voice. The screech of the metal legs of Wei Ying's chair against the tile punches a hole in the heavy mood, leaving it to sink like yeasted bread-dough around their feet. "No," Wei Ying says. He stuffs his hands in his pockets. Through the pattern of cartoon sweetshop candies Wen Ning can see them bunched into fists. "I can't do this. I'm too-- I'm-- not right now. I'm going to go on a run, and then-- we can."
If shame were a river, Wen Ning would drown. (Lan Zhan had been wearing strawberry lip gloss. He can still taste it, artificial, sticking whenever parts his mouth.) The door slamming on Wei Ying's heels seems to take all the stuff in Wen Ning's body with it, scooping him hollow, just skin and a little bit of conscience to hate himself with. Lan Zhan sighs, perpetually-squared shoulders shorn into round misery. When he crosses back over to the couch Wen Ning follows him; as he'd thought he might, Lan Zhan tugs on the edge of Wen Ning's sleeve, and Wen Ning crawls gratefully into his lap.
It makes Wen Ning think about the first time Lan Zhan did this for him, back as freshmen in undergrad. They had been friends, by then, for months-- proper friends, not just Wen Ning trying to squash down all his jealousy and resentment that now Wei Ying wanted everything they did to include Lan Zhan, as well-- but they hadn't hugged; Lan Zhan didn't, and unlike some people Wen Ning wasn't going to drape himself all over someone without permission.
He doesn't remember what brought him knocking on the door to Wei Ying and Lan Zhan's dorm room, trailing his coat and backpack like a sorry lost duckling. Something about assignments and a burgeoning migraine and feeling like a war-monument-sized failure. The hitching little sob he gave when he saw Wei Ying was out must have communicated how desperately close to crumbling he was, because Lan Zhan put down his textbook and climbed up onto his lofted bed, patting the blanket beside him.
Wen Ning had been just achy and homesick enough not to question it. Lan Zhan had held him and rubbed his back and let Wen Ning stare blankly at the peeling-up corners of Wei Ying's posters until Wen Ning had felt like a person again and not a lump of phlegm in the throat of wider academia. Then he had fetched Wen Ning a glass of water and waited patiently while he drank it, all without saying a word. It had been the nicest Wen Ning had felt in a long time.
Now he tips his cheek against the softness of Lan Zhan's shirt (Lan Zhan's clothes are always softer than anything Wen Ning owns, even when he uses fabric softener). He feels Lan Zhan's chin settle on the top of his head, right over where every one of his baby pictures shows a cowlick. Lan Zhan smells like his body wash (coordinated with the rest of his toiletries, to both Wen Ning and Wei Ying’s amusement), a good clean soapy smell. Breathing it in makes Wen Ning feel calmer, no matter how often: it’s imprinted somewhere behind his ribs as a safe thing, a harbor for his soul.
The TV is still showing the frame they paused the movie on, the main character opening his mouth in comic blurry emotion. Wen Ning can relate, to that. Without Wei Ying, it's like his entire world stops, too. They both jump when Wei Ying comes back, the sound of his feet and harsh post-run panting cutting through the waiting hush that's fallen over the apartment. He is sweaty, flushed, picking his hair up off the back of his neck. Wen Ning hurts from wanting him, but more from wanting him to be okay. At least he looks less unraveled. He usually does, after he's worked out some of his endless frantic energy. "Okay," he says. Quieter than normal. “You were going to tell me things?”

I have a lot of feelings about the twin heros reconciliation, you see, i love them and i want them to be happy, but, here comes the but, i also just want to see jiang cheng be his grumpy self, let the man be angry, he may not be the best person but i think he deserves to be angry, everyone always talks about he like he was the whole reason that things went down hill, but put yourself in his place, i would be mad, like, real mad, and i would have also probs felt guilty, he doesn't NEED to stop being mad at wei wuxian, they dont need the reconciliation bc they went down diferent paths and i dont think that in canon a reconciliation would have been the healthiest thing to happend for both of them, does that stops me from wanting them to be close again, no, i actually quite really like the fics out there, its just my humble opinion

MDZS/CQL Ask Game
I saw this The Untamed (Chen Qing Ling) / Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) questionnaire here, and as I have Thoughts(TM) I figured I might as well write them all down!
1: Favourite Character: Wei Wuxian no duh of course, but I also highkey love Nie Huaisang you clever little mofo.
Tumblr media
2: What would _______ be in a _______ AU? Jin Guangshan would be STERILE in a happier AU. Or at the very least a decent frikkin father, good grief. Keep it in your dang pants.
3: Happiest Moment: Everything before the effing Fire Nation attacked, basically.
4: Best Symbolism: I love how The Untamed (Chen Qing Ling) is also the name of WWX’s ghost flute, Chenqing. There’s a whole analysis of the different meaning here, and I was reeling.
5: Biggest WTF moment: Every time WWX couldn’t tell LWJ was 100% in love with him, the effing dinbgbat.
6: Favourite Ship: Come on now, stop playing. Novel, tv show, donghua, manhua--we all know why we’re here.
Tumblr media
7: Which Adaptations Have You Consumed: All of them. except the audiobooks.
8: Most Confusing Part In The Story: I wasn’t confused, just frustrated, like, Omfg why are these people so stupid and quick to act like total SCUM and spread rumors!? Then I realized: miserable bored rich people, of course.
9: A Fanon You Dislike: That Jiang Cheng will ever get married. XD That boy is way too traumatized; he needs therapy, and to focus on repairing his relationship with Jin Ling (who never deserved to treated that way, omg he was a baby!), not a romantic interest. He couldn’t get with Wen Qing on his best day.
Tumblr media
10: Favourite Fanfic Set-Up: I like fix-it fics, so any setup that has someone actually stepping in to HELP WWX is my favorite setup.
11: Tags You Mostly Filter On Ao3 For: We’ll be here all day.
12: Saddest Moment: Everything after the Fire Nation attacked. NGL, the anime made me cry a lot more than the tv show though, especially when Yunmeng Jiang fell.
13: Fanciest Character Design: Holy crap this is hard; they’re all fancy! Props to the costume department! The Jin are pretty fancy, but so are the Jiang. The Nie are no slouches either. And the Lan are soooo elegant. (The plainest might actually be the Wen, lol.) Bah, lemme just go with the obvious pick, the Twin Jades of Lan! <3
Tumblr media
14: Weakest Character: Jiang Cheng. It’s not his fault, and he’s actually a lot stronger than anyone ever gave him credit for. But as much as I can partially empathize with him and all his losses, I hate how he took out all his resentment on Jin Ling. There was no reason to treat your dead sister’s only child like that. That boy was crying his eyes out, and JC was just his usual constipated self. Eff how ungrateful & awful he was to the Wens & WWX & everyone else--you just don’t treat children that way, that’s where I draw the line. He failed Jin Ling.
15: Any Ship You Like Besides WangXian: Xiao Xingchen & Song Lan, my poor darlings. The parallels. THE PARALLELS I TELL YOU.
16: Favourite Habit: Nie Huaisang’s nervous tick about not knowing anything. At first I thought it was cuz he genuinely didn’t want to be bothered, but by the end I was like OHHHHHH.
17: Purer Cinnamon Role Than Wen Ning: There is no such thing, lies and slander!
18: Something You Want To Change In The Story: Everything. No but seriously, I just wish Jiang Cheng had stood up for Wei Wuxian; JGY was absolutely right on that account. Yes, as much as I wish WWX had gone to Gusu with LWJ, at the end of the day it wasn’t LWJ’s responsibility to look out for WWX, or to help while WWX & the Wens were effing starving to death in the Burial Mounds. No, WWX didn’t tell him everything (about the golden core), but he KNEW the Wens were innocent, and that WWX was right to step in, and he did NOTHING; too wrapped up in his own resentment to tell his arsehole from his mouth. I can’t with Jiang Cheng.
19: Cinnamon Role Meme (4 Characters): Just to reiterate #17:
Tumblr media
20: Favourite Villain: Jin Guangyao. I hate liking him so much, but that poor dude really needed a hug. So did Xue Yang, but omg.
21: A Fanon You Like: Plenty. We’ll be here all day.
22: Most Annoying Person: Every time Clan Leader Yao spoke I felt my intestines clench.
23: The Thing You Liked Most In The Series: IMO the characters are the very best part of the entire MDZS universe. Even the villains and scum (Yao and Su I’m looking at YOU) are “strong,” even if in their awfulness. And the ones who seem “weak“ cuz they’re always having emotional breakdowns are actually incredibly strong in the scheme of things, even the ones I don’t personally like (Jiang Cheng, hooo boy, you need help).
24: ______ has a ______ kink: The Gusu Lan have a “My Significant Other May Very Well Be A Serial Killer And I’m Turned On By It” Kink.
25: Least Favourite Character: Did I mention that Jin Guangshan should’ve just been a decent father????
26: Who is Jinling’s favourite uncle (ranking): O_O Is...?  Is this...?? Is this a trick question??? XD
Wei Wuxian (post canon), Jin Guangyao, Jiang Cheng, Lan Xichen, Nie Huaisang, Lan Wangji, Nie Mingjue, Mo Xuanyu.
27: Character Design That Is Just “Meh”: Who’s this guy again?
Tumblr media
28: Most Underrated Character: Ouyang Zizhen; not underrated, just underrepresented, IMO, compared to the other juniors.
29: Lan Cuisine Or Lotus Root Soup? Neither; the Lans are vegetarians and I hate veggies, but the Jiang like spices, and I had sichuan ONCE and vowed never again.
30: A Ship You Like But People Have A Lot Of Opinions About: I ship Lan Xichen with Wen Qing, and that’s not a popular ship for various reasons.
31: What Sect Would You Like To Be A Member Of? I did all 4 of the quizzes listed here, and got Jiang, Jin, Lan, and Jiang. So I guess I’m Jiang; Big Brat Energy Gang! I was hoping I’d be Nie though. XD
32: Lan Sect Rule That Would Be The Hardest To Obey: All 4000+ of them.
33: How Do You Feel About Lan Qiren. Retire already.
34: Favourite Arc: Coffin Town. That cursed school trip was so effed up. I can’t wait for Season 3 of the donghua!
Tumblr media
35: Who Is The Biggest Disaster: Jiang Cheng. Xue Yang. Jin Guangyao. Take your pick.
36: Character You Would Have Liked To Have More Background/Screen-Time: Lan Xichen. He got plenty, but I’d love even more, like an entire prequel before Nie Mingjue died, of then just being cultivating bamfs.
37: Favourite Adaptation: The donghua/anime. That was the first one I got into, for the best visual representation of what all the cultivation techniques would look like (IMO the tv show had too much wire-fu, and not nearly enough magic). Then I read the novel when it became clear that all the BL elements had been removed. Then I watched the tv show, and to recover from THE FEELS I read the manhua/manga and watched the chibi donghua/anime.
38: Strongest Character: Lan Wangji. Because how. HOW? That poor man SUFFERED IN SILENCE FOR SIXTEEN YEARS. At least Nie Huaisang kept himself busy scheming. But LWJ saw the love of his life fall to the dark side of the Force and commit suicide; was whipped nearly to death by his own clan (and still kept talking smack!); was hospitalized/arrested for 3 years; raised WWX’s son without breathing a word to anyone about Lan Sizhui actually being a Wen (Lan Xichen knew); had to listen to WWX’s memory be demonized by everyone around him; and played Inquiry every night searching ceaselessly for WWX’s soul. A KING.
Tumblr media
39: The Thing You Liked Most About The Novel: That WangXian actually get their happily ever after together. The other adaptations are all ducking & dodging censorship, while the novel’s out there sloppy drunk with one boob out like heeeeeey~~~!
40: Who’s Voice Is Your Favourite? WWX in the donghua. I love how childish & playful he sounds, and how it all changes once he’s the Yiling Patriarch, then he doubles down on the cuteness as MoX.
41: Potatoes Or Turnips? Potatoes. Nothing beats French Fries.
42: Favourite Female Character: Wen Qing. Even though my favorite female scene was Madame Yu going to WORK on that Wen heifer--IMO the donghua did it better, but the tv show did a good job, too!
43: What Style Of Cultivation Would Suit You: I suck at physical combat; I would literally be Nie Huaisang; I’m not cultivating anything but raw effing karma.
44: Who Would You Like To Be Your S/O: I love LWJ, and he’s the best character in the whole story IMO and WangXian is life, don’t get me wrong, but Lan Xichen is bae. He’s just way more laid back, personable, and open about things. (And a total hottie.)
Tumblr media
45: Your Instrument Of Choice In A Fight? Poison, corpse powder, subterfuge, deceit, lies, lackeys--I’m basically Xue Yang.
46: Favourite Fanfic / A Fanfic You Want To Recommend: I really enjoyed A Stone to Break your Soul, A Song to Save It, by Rikke (180k). It’s a fix-it fic ofc, where JC arranges WangXian’s marriage after the Burial Mounds, which is as it should’ve been. Headcanon divergence accepted.
47: Character You Want To Adopt: WWX. My heart goes out to Madame Yu, cuz she thought she was in a loveless arranged marriage and was stuck raising her husband’s lovechild (laughs in #46). But she did absolutely no one in her family any effing favors. So much grief could’ve been avoided if JFM & Yu had left the kids out of their issues. Wicked stepmother of the frikkin century.
48: Who Tries To Befriend Lan Yuan First When He Grows Up In Cloud Recesses? Lan Xichen, I’m telling you, the man is an actual angel.
49: Is Nie Huaisang More Of A Goody Or A Baddy? He’s a total BAMF; good at being bad at being good! :3
Tumblr media
50: Favourite Song / Part Of The OST: I really like version of WangXian from the Audio Drama ED.
youtube
51: Tea Or Emperor’s Smile? Water.
52: Favourite MDZS Related Blog: Everyone I reblog here and at my inspo blog.
53: Coolest Concept: Necromancy/resentful energy cultivation. WWX was ahead of his time, lol.
54: Favourite Place: Cloud Recesses. Even though I’d hate to live there with all those rules.
55: A Story-Arc That Haunts You: Coffin Town.
56: Who Would You Take On A Night Hunt? WWX; he’s a chaotic genius.
57: Scariest Monster/Spirit etc. The tv show wasn’t scary at all, but my favorite special effect was when Wang Lingjiao came back to haunt Wen Chao.
Tumblr media
58: What Would You Place In Your Secret Chamber Behind The Mirror? Another magic mirror that leads someplace more secure?
59: Character That Surprised You The Most: Nie Huaisang; I never saw that coming.
60: Favourite Character Development: Jin Ling. Poor baby just needed love!
61: Best Weapon: WWX’s mind. He’s a genius, an artist, the best friend & brother anyone could ever hope for, and always tries his hardest to make the impossible possible.
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading!

I know that basically all Mdzs characters need therapy, but they also need some normal freakin' friends pls? I enjoy how sympathetic & diverse all the characters are, and all have positives & negatives, but like..?? Please, can we get at least 3 normal characters for each Mdzs character (Jc,Lz,Nhs,Jzx,etc). They need friends to complain to without complicated sect history and politics. And hobbies besides magic. Someone to just say, "Yeah this sucks, but hey, I like you as a person friendo."
It’s stressful story on a character level, genuinely. Almost every single named character is born one degree of separation from everyone else with 500 years of accrued generational trauma to overcome/add to/take out on each other. Literally no one present can go, “Wow, that sounds awful, bro, do you want to go for a walk?” without following up with, “Or that’s what I would say...if you hadn’t killed my brother!/if it wouldn’t be fraught with dark implications because my father was your father’s servant/if it wouldn’t give people the impression that I’m begging for a clan alliance thus dooming everyone who works for me to ruin/etc.” It’s like a family reunion story but everyone has a swords on them 24 hours a day. It’s so fun... But I’m... Stremsfd.
Presumably people exist in this setting who won’t clash explosively with every other personality present in some way. Presumably a minority of them are even exempt from the Mayfly/December cultivator problem. But the main cast encounters such people exclusively when they’re victims of supernatural or supernatural-adjacent violence or when they’re some sort of vendor! It’s impressive but holy shit dude! There’s only one exception and Jingyi can’t be everywhere at once. ... ... ... ... Sizhui is calm because his best friend doesn't have a tragic backstory send Tweet.

Crossover things I
-There are two characters that switch places. One is very easily found, the other one even forgets for a moment that they are not from the right dimension, too good in playing along.
-The MDZS characters speak normal Chinese in the books; thus they do that too in the World of AC, even though they come from an alternative version of ancient China. (Karma mocks that part, and is scolded by Asano sr. for this.)
-There is a cheat code that lets one overcome the language barrior without any problems. Kayano and Meng Yao found out about that immediately. Jiang Cheng after a week of trying his best to learn Japanese - Gakushú not at all. But he speaks Chinese anyway, so the idea to search for such a code never crossed his mind in the first place. (Karma has already been studying Chinese as well for quite some time - because his rival could, was there a better motivation than that? - so he is more or less able to understand what Jiang Cheng mutters under his breath half of the time.)
-Because of the way the other two behave around him, Gakushú thinks he is the oldest sibling for a while and tries his best to act accordingly. (He is an only-child though, so he tries and fails to mimic Isogai. Wei Wuxian and Yanli are too shocked to correct him for a while.)
-Asano sr. playing fatherly-figure to Jiang Cheng.(And Meng Yao too, in a way. He tries to parent Karma too, but he is more stubborn and only mocks every try.)
-Jiang Cheng getting therapy and suddenly being an only child. (It helps.)
-Kayano having one mental breakdown after the other in the kitchen (or a place like the kitchen) while Xue Yang eats his pudding and listens to the madness in silence. (The pudding is good.)
-Flying is the best and the golden core can be abused to ignore the need to eat and to sleep. Self destructive Japan-Duo is in love with the concept.
-Older sister/older siblings must be protected + Kayano gets a fan. (She likes it.)

ChengQing (lmao never realized that was their fucking ship name)
so pros of (Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing):
one of the few possible het ships available to mdzs fans like there are all of five named female characters and this is the only one not in an established het pairing. and like sure ive seen yanli w/ someone else a couple times but you CANT put her with JIANG CHENG and i cant say ive ever seen mianmian in a serious relationship in fics with anyone besides either her canon hubby or a chick (usually yanli, wen qing herself, or even sometimes both lmao).
it’s basically written itself in cql!! he has a very obv and clear crush on her, even gives her a comb and offers to help her! she seems interested but the way the storyline went it was simply not meant to be :’(
you get to pair off jiang cheng!! ngl once u finish mdzs its kinda sad for everyone not wangxian (in their generation/above) cuz theyre the only one that get a happy ending. Everyone else is forever alone / depressed / bitter or a combination thereof. so it’s nice to see jiang cheng getting a happy ending!
he... gets... kids...? like ngl as a childless person that is happy to stay that way thats not exactly a pro in my eyes but you might look at his relationship w/ jin ling and say “he’s a great father! he deserves to be a father!” which okay good news! wen qing can bear children!
Now. Cons.
for one thing the fact that you have a lack of options doesnt exactly mean every possible het pairing can have good chemistry even if you change circumstances enough. there comes to a point where certain pairings can only be really viable if one or both of them are ooc.
lets be honest im willing to bet that AT LEAST 80% of the reason cql introduced this ship was because they were not allowed to make the wangxian pair explicitly Together (and i dont even mean anything specifically sexual), and they needed SOME SORT of romance to feature in the story. xuanli doesnt count because theyre an established background ship,  the jiang parents dont count as romance, we aint talkin about the villain relationships, and lbr, mianmian already had a lot more signif in cql than mdzs. so it makes sense that they took the arguably most important male chara besides wangxian and made him have a crush on the most important female character that wasnt his SISTER.
what im trying to say is that cql pulled that pairing out of a hat. if you look at canon at ALL i highly doubt there would ever have been feelings, just as there never were. we dont quite know the age dif but we know that wen qing was the older sister and wen ning might have been a bit younger? than the boys? cannot quite remember but we dont know if she was only a year or two older or if it was like. mingjue and huaisang. we dont know! and i canNOT see jiang cheng going for an older chick. also their personalities would clash So Much. she has older sis vibes and not the gentle kind like yanli. she snaps at wen ning’s mumbling and stuff a good couple times- you think she’d tolerate jiang cheng’s emotional immaturity? hah.
this also kinda segues into my main point of: as depressing as it is that jiang cheng is forever alone unless you pair him off... he would honestly put whoever you pair him off with through hell. he’s not nice. so many jiang cheng stans like to argue that he’s a traumatized kid that was raised to channel his emotions through anger (and raises bitterness under his skin like an ugly puppy) but inside he has a heart of gold, and they’re... not exactly wrong! i mean- literally every younger chara is traumatized in some way. but... that doesn’t really... excuse the shit he’s pulled? as much as jiang cheng stans like to forget: jin guangyao was RIGHT when he said that jiang cheng’s insecurities got wei ying killed. his CLOSEST ALLY.
tying back to wen qing we have their actual CANON interactions (or lack thereof). wen qing didn’t exactly protect wei ying and jiang cheng out of the goodness of her heart when lotus pier fell: she was protecting wen ning (her BROTHER) from the repercussions of his own actions by saving wei ying (and Jiang Cheng ig idk he was just there bUT YOUNG MASTER WEI-)
not QUITE sure why she agreed to doing the golden core transfer (maybe scientific curiousity? i mean she had an unproven medical theory and here was a volunteer) but it def wasnt For Jiang Cheng.
and then the next time she saw him? do you guys remember the next time she saw him? it’ was when jiang cheng came up to the burial mounds to kill wen ning’s corpse and tell wei ying to turn over the wens.
KEEP IN MIND that jiang cheng KNOWS wen ning and qing SAVED HIS FUCKING ASS after lotus pier (not How but he KNOWS THIS) and yet he still tells wei ying to hand them over.
he makes wei ying choose between what amounts to the cultivation world and his morals.
that does not a good healthy relationship make. also again their personalities would clash like so bad. i love wen qing way more but you have to admit her personality is super similar to madame yu’s. and we already agreed that jiang cheng was traumatized as a kid. im not saying fengmian didnt have a hand in it but you gotta admit a good amount was madam yu and her insecurites and accusations she piled on her son. and you wanna pair him up romantically with someone who won’t take his shit and smile? will call him out? HAH.
im not saying this because i think jiang cheng should be with a softer personalitied (guy) like lan xichen or wen ning or huaisang because god knows those pairings have their own issues. im just saying that in canon-verse all i can ship whole-heartedly is jiang cheng / therapy, but since there is not therapy in canon-verse, or even if there WAS then there’s no way he’d admit to needing it, then yeah he can stay single for all his bitter life. better that than making jiang parent relationship 2.0 like fuck.
(this of course means that in modern aus where he DOES get therapy i am Open)
also real quick but jiang cheng was NOT a good parent to jin ling and i will not take constructive criticism like sure he was better than the jiang parents and the lan parents but that is SUCH a low fuckin bar and it’s a fact that in chapter 9 jin ling literally thinks “if I can’t slice off her head with this blow, I will die here- death it is then!!” (taken gratefully from the exiled rebels scanlation) and that is NOT a healthy-minded child.
the only healthy minded children is like. jingyi. and probably sizhui. although i am not here for the way the lan sect raise children but sometimes you have to take what you can get.
also i want you to look me in the eye and tell me that wen qing could and would do anything besides throw down with someone that so much as looked at her brother wrong
because jiang cheng apparently decided to lay the blame for jin zixuan’s death at wen ning’s feet (which is incredibly ironic considering he blames wei ying for yanli’s death??? like i feel like he could stand to use his brain cells a bit more??) and repeatedly tried to kill him.

top 5 favorite mdzs relationships? romantic/platonic/familial/whatever, just any Dynamic
1. YUNMENG BROTHERS
i will never stop crying about them. i will never stop having every feeling about them. i desperately need them to be okay and the fact that that is probably impossible is so painful and perfect and good
2. wangxian
listen..... i never claimed not to be a basic bitch. they invented love, it's fine
3. lan xichen and jin guangyao
i mean i DO think the only explanation for anything that happens is that they're in love and/or sleeping together, but obviously it's not just the potential ship. after i watched the last episode of the show, i literally just sat in silence on the zoom call with the friend i was watching with, broken only by me intermittently saying "....what...... happened......???"
setting side the much-joked-about fact that the last episode of the show becomes couples' therapy for two secondary-at-best characters (which is incredible), the whole final sequence with the stabbing and "die with me" and pushing him away is just... mindblowing. what a horrible, painful, compelling MESS. i love it so much.
3 1/2. 3zun
speaking of compelling messes!! i also literally screamed when it cut to the moment of them getting married swearing brotherhood
4. song lan and xiao xingchen
i can't talk or think about it too much because i get too sad :(
5. jin ling's uncles
this is cheating a little, but. jin ling's relationships to jiang cheng and jgy encapsulate two of my favorite things about MDZS/CQL overall. i've said before that one of my favorite lines in probably the entire book is jin ling's internal monologue after guanyin temple where he gets yelled at for crying over jgy and thinks, in dismay, whether maybe he's just not the kind of person who's capable of truly hating anyone. it's so sad and lovely and simultaneously hopeful (the younger generation are good people and might even come to know it!!) and devastating (he's been raised into a culture that hasn't taught him to know that THAT IS A GOOD THING). i get why the show didn't/couldn't do it, but jgy's love for his nephew and jin ling's love for an uncle who was genuinely always kind to him is like..... so important for two guys who never got much love in their lives.
jin ling's relationship to jiang cheng is a) hilarious, b) a vessel for just so much sadness and pain and the years spent trying to clumsily cobble a life back together after the fall of lotus pier and the death of the yiling patriarch etc., and c) exemplary of the attention to characte detail that makes the story so, so good. jin ling naming his dogs the same kind of dumb things that jiang cheng used to is such a tiny, kind of pointless touch, but it's such a realistic and human touch and reflects the way both the book and the show really pay attention to the little ways the characters truly impact each other, not just when it's relevant to the plot. also (as i've also said before) jin ling's "i've never been hit before!!!!" when we hear jiang cheng constantly threatening to hit him is the best one-line character development i've ever heard. that's it. that's them in a nutshell: jiang cheng is all bark and literally no bite (for the people he loves) and jin ling knows it and understands his love for what it is, which is why he isn't afraid of jiang cheng at all.

A bit random but if you could send ONE character in mdzs (main or secondary) to therapy, who would that be? (I'm saying only one because tbh I would send every character in mdzs to the therapist)
Don’t make me choose, they all need therapy so badly. But uh, if I had to pick just one... JGY, maybe? Maybe he’d be a little less murder-y if he got some actual support.

Ah, but what scenes in particular did you enjoy? The wangxian ones in general? Or were there any particular ones that stuck with you?
-the axe cultivator
Oh, ac, I missed some of your question last time didn't I? So sorry. My head is kinda in the clouds these days
There are so many scenes that stuck with me, so I'll make a bullet list and probably still miss some ^^
It's such a small thing but in ep 1 the transition from the tale of how wei wuxian was killed transitions to the tea house via a shit from within sizhui's trea cup as he's pouring tea "onto the camera". It's nothing special but remember loving that shot so much the first time I watched that it was one of the things that kept me watching
Wangxian-wise in the first two episodes, I'd be remiss not to mention that handgrip when wei wuxian plays wangxian to calm wen ning down. Because it goes on ... and on ... and on. When I watched it for the first time I was like "ooohhhh so it's gonna be this kind of gay". You know the endless-longing-stares kind. And now when I rewatch it's just devastating. The last time they saw each other before this scene, they also held onto each others wrists but wei wuxian let go and fell to his death. And here lan zhan is, holding on for minutes and only let's go once jiang cheng threatens wei wuxian. Just ... 💔
i started shipping xiyao from their very furst sxebe together. Those two actors (i try to remeber their names but i always forget them again. My memory is shit when it comes to names :/) really just did want some of that sweet sweet homoerotic tension. Also, their first interaction stand out to me as the moment i really started to like lan xichen. In a setting that was shown early on to be highly hierarchical, he exhibited in the very forst scenes that he is willing to disregard someone's standing and look at their character and abilities instead. I just really love xichen ❤
Okay, i can't name one scene per episode, so let’s sum them up a little
I adore this progression during the cloud recesses and the yin iron arc from a flirtratious rivalry to genuine deep freindship and love. There are so many little moments that stand out because of the subtle acting joices made my wang yibo and xiao zhan, as well as the script, The lantern scene, when Wei Wuxian doesn’t betray the yin iron secret to huaisang and lan wangji goes “hu, so your bullshitting has reasons”, when they are in the market and lan zhan actually communicates that he doesn’t like crowds and wei wuxian pulls him closer but not into the crowd and so many others. When you watch closely, you see them realising little details about each other and I’m honestly so impressed with how amazingly the process of their falling in love was portrayed
fast forward a bit: obviously, the freaking montage quasi-fan vid in the middle of the cave scene set to their freaking love song. I remeber when I first watched this scene I actually, literally screamed. I could not believe it because their was no fucking way that this could be read as anything but romantic and I was not used to that much blatant queer romance!
A little less happy (okay a lot). The entire destruction of the jiang clan with a special mention to the scene when Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian just saw the bodies and run into fields where they fight and Jiang Cheng chokes Wei Wuxian and then they just fall back in exhaustion and sleep right there under the open sky. Everything about that scene was brilliantly done and also soul-crushing. The loss of innosence in that moment devastated me. It was so obvious that in the moment of deepest despair, all of these children’s traumas and deep-seated fears reared their ugly heads. So Jiang Cheng directs all his grief at the easiest target for his anger and Wei Wuxian just takes it because that is what he thinks is his job. And the real tragedy? This dynamic will not be broken until Wei Wuxian’s literal death. These children need therapy so goddamn badly and all they get is more trauma on top of their excisting trauma.
“The single log bridge” scene. I. Am. A. Sucker for the found family trope, especially for characters who cronically think they have to do everything on their own. So there Wei Wuxian is saying he will walk his dark path alone, but instead he finds lit lanterns and a humble feast prepared for him by people who love him. That juxtaposition kils. me. every. time. YOU ARE LOVED WEI WUXIAN! FOR YOURSELF!
(Shout out to the second time his word are refuted, this time by lan wangji and *gasp* verbally. Because there is NO better love declaration than that scene in front of basically every leader of cultivation world who politely wait for their turn to attack them)
Luo Qingyang removing herself from the narrative. I literally cry every time.
Talking about women: jiang yanli defending wei wuxian and calling him her brother. That moment is the "three things all wise men fear" quite incarnat, only it's the anger of a gentle woman
“Let me go” So ... I have SUCH a thing for couple who grapple with questions of when it is time to let go and when it is time to hold on. So Wangxian hits all my buttons. I will go further into this in my last bullet point (about the very last scene)
Oh god, this list is gonna get so long and i’m still going to forget things
In the present timeline:
Again, to sum it up, all the gentle wangxian moment where they look at each other and their entire face grows soft. Every almost-smile lan wangji sends wei wuxian, every "oh. He really loves me huh?"-look from wei wuxian. Especially in the Jingshi just after lan Xichen's loredrop. These two intensly guarded people (yes, wei wuxian is guarded,he just hides behind smiles) are so open with each other. I only have to see a guf of lan wangji with his heir down and I go feral!
Talking about that episode, the lan family backstory as a scene does things to me. And I remember watching that the first time and so much of lan wangji's behaviour suddenly making sense. Especially little lan zhan kneeling in front of his mother’s house and that being how he showed his grief really drove home just how this man exhibits emotion. I'm pretty sure that that was the moment he really became my favourite character.
Same episode and a start juxtaposition to the domestic scene between wangxian before: the talk between lan xichen and Jin Guangyao just afterwards. You could probably write an essay of meta about the parallels and differences between those two scenes and I think that's deliberate because they're back to back. The lan brother's share tea with the person closest to their hearts. One is finally able to open himself fully, the other closes up more than he ever has before with this person. The framing in that scene alone drives that message home, never mind its content. It's heart-wrenching and so well done!
Talking about xiyao: jin guangyao's death for similar reasons. Just ... arrrgh
I'm sure I've missed a ton but thus is already so long so I'll close with my favourite overall: the last scene. The parting and subsequent reunion on the mountaintop. I've stated before why this means so much to me. It is such a reassuring message to me: to have two intensely different people learn to understand and love each other exactly as they are. Being who they are, the occasionally walk different paths. But they don't limit each other. They learn to improve each other by just being there when they are and therefore know and trust that their love will return.
This was mostly cql because you asked for "scenes", but have some honorary novel mentions:
Lan Wangji: "The face says nothing. Listen to the heart-beat." 😭😭😭
The moment when wei wuxian collapses after the second siege and lan sizhui expresses surprise over this, lan wangji says something like "We are all human." I love that moment for many reasons. 1) it's one of the rare direct insights into lan wangji's thoughts. No matter how brief he is here, you don't say something like that just because. 2) and it's significant that he is the one saying it because he, too, is placed on a pedestal. In fact, I think a lot about mdzs boils down to the conflict between the inner self and outer perception and how that dichotomy can be both a deliberate shield (lan zhan being the perfect example) and a curse
I hope you and your axe are having a wonderful day 🥰

Guess What! Every Song From ‘The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind’ By Ben Folds Five Is Secretly About MDZS!
Erase Me
as all breakup songs, this is very clearly about wwx and jc’s falling out. lots of anger and resentment and oh no they’re really not complete without each other!
What was our home Paper not stone A lean-to at most And when you pulled your half away Gravity won
Michael Praytor, Five Years Later
this baby’s about all the people wwx runs into a bunch of times throughout his life! some of whom he forgets exist (su she, jin zixun), and some of whom he simply did not think would reappear in his life. then he gets yeeted into mxy’s body, almost immediately runs into lwj, and:
It was the opposite of 'Fire and Rain' You know the song I never thought I'd see this guy again But I was wrong
Sky High
one of many wangxian songs you’ll find on this album. this one’s particularly bittersweet. vibes of their falling out before the guanyin temple scene?
Last night at the bar, I was wrong, I was only hurting And you were acting too polite When we held onto the pain, through the storms and the rain Like a crumpled, empty, discarded Newports box
and WORSE: vibes of their parting at the end of cql. :(
The brightness of air Out walking somewhere, and when they ask you Just tell em that you knew me back when, under the blue sky
The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind
this is a blatant lwj character song. a character who thinks themself Above all the Teen Drama going on around them and tries to focus on Learning? who is quiet on the outside but on the inside their thoughts are running wild? that’s hanguang-jun babyyyy!
But Sara, well, she just can't bear The stupidity, the boredom, the grind She stays at school so that she can hear The sound of the life of the mind
And it's noisy up there
On Being Frank
ben folds really thought he could fool me into not realizing this was a wangxian song by explicitly writing this song about frank sinatra’s tour manager. but he went and wrote a song about dealing with the death of a person you shaped your entire life around.
don’t worry mr folds. i saw your wangxian vibes.
But home for me was always someone else, you know That shadows always fall when the sun goes down
Draw A Crowd
this song has wwx vibes in a way i can’t fully articulate. maybe because it’s a seemingly jokey song but it’s really about being miserable and disconnected with the life that you worked really hard to achieve. gives me vibes of sunshot-era wwx trying to convince his family he’s the Same Old Wei Ying but really he’s dead inside.
I ordered something, it took a while This morning something was on my doorstep What's this I'm holding? Time capsule order 'Cause I'm a brand new man, and I don't think I want it I don't think I want it A row of flags hangin' behind me A garden of mics and questions, and photo-flashes blind me And I'm so high, I can't recall my statements I only know I made 'em because my face vibrated
Do It Anyway
ah yes, the most fanmixable ben folds five song of all time. this song rocks. the bassline absolutely fucks. the music video has fraggles in it. and it’s a wangxian song.....
There will be times you might leap before you look There'll be times you'll like the cover and that's precisely why you'll love the book Do it anyway
No, seriously guys, it’s a wangxian song!
Tell me what you said you'd never do Tell me what you said you'd never say Read me off that list of things 'cause I used to not like you But now I think you're OK
NO FOR REAL! WANGXIAN!
Call it surrender but you know that that's a joke And the punchline is you were never actually in control But still, surrender anyway
AND a solid wwx character song!
Despite your grand attempts the chips are set to fall And all the stories you might weave cannot negotiate them all Do it anyway
....and that’s me being restrained and not just posting all the lyrics. seriously, guys, what was ben thinking? he was thinking wangxian is what he was thinking.
Hold That Thought
as always i am gonna ignore the first verse of this song. HOWEVER. more wangxian but from lwj’s perspective this time.
I was shown the thirty-six Ways I'm not available On a simple, easy chart
Later on that evening On the beach in Santa Monica It was a very risky start
Suppose the stupid chart is right In a year will you still feel the same way? Ah, well, you hold that thought And I'll hold that thought, too
Away When You Were Here
well lads. we’ve reached the strongest jiang “daddy issues” cheng character song in existence. congratulations, ben. you wrote a narrator who is mourning their father’s death while simultaneously mourning the relationship they never had with their father even when he was alive.
Sometimes a phrase or a manner that's you Comes through me, it goes in a flash It's a frame, it's a blink like life Oh and how much now should we pay for the past Cause you could age with grace if I freed you in my mind
But I loved you then And I love you now All the things I wished I'd asked When I'm lost in clouds I remember how I was robbed and I was blessed And you were away even when you were here
every day of my life i think about the line “how much now should we pay for the past?” in a jiang cheng context and that is like 95% of the reason i need therapy.
Thank You For Breaking My Heart
this is a pretty straightforward angsty wangxian song. it hits hard in a “lwj after the cave scene in mdzs right before wwx dies” way, and in a “lwj asking wwx to come to cloud recesses” way.
Thank you for breaking my heart Now I know that it's in there I left it wide open and asked you to stay But you know better
OH NOW I’M SAD. DON’T WORRY BABY. YOU’LL GET HIM EVENTUALLY.
ben, you ended this album on such a depressing note. but it’s a great album!

My Two Cents on the Ending of The Untamed/陈情令
Tumblr media
From chapter 111 of MDZS (novel translation by Exiled Rebels Scanlations):
“It was what he hoped all this time. Each to their own path. But now that the day really came, watching Wen Ning and Lan SiZhui’s figures walk slowly, slowly away until they finally disappeared, he felt somewhat dejected.
Lan WangJi was now the only one who stood by his side. Luckily, Lan WangJi was also the only one he wished to have by his side.”
(spoilers for novel, episode 50 and ending of Guardian, Eternal Love, I Will Never Let You Go, and Story of Minglan)
If I’m going to be honest, part of me wishes the show had ended with that scene above. That would have been, imho, a PERFECT ending because it would have been an obvious one. We wouldn’t have to think any further about if they actually did reunite at the end, if that white glimmer in Wei Wuxian’s eyes is indeed the figure of Lan Wangji, etc etc.
Now before I say anything further, for the record, I am freaking GRATEFUL we got the ending we got…especially the original Tencent version. Even though the WeTV version is a little more questionable, fact remains things could have been so much worse. I mean, God, imagine if we were left with THIS as the last image we ever see of The Untamed.

The fact that Team 陈情令 took it one step further and gave us Lan Zhan’s “Wei Ying” followed by WWX’s glorious, teary-eyed smile is already a straight-up miracle. But, because I’m a lazy ass by nature, I wish I could have shut off my brain and just be spoon-fed a definitive ending that would have left me completely satiated, and that’s really the only reason why I wish they had ended the show at the scene where WWX and LWJ sad their goodbyes to Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui. Plus, there’s just something a little more satisfying about seeing our two leads together as a couple on screen one last time.  A teeny tiny bitter part of me knows that had WangXian been a m/f couple, we would’ve undoubtedly gotten that last shot of them together, much like we did for the main couple in shows like Eternal Love or I Will Never Let You Go or Story of Ming Lan or basically any other c-dramas with happy endings and a hetero couple at its core (which is like, what 99% of the c-dramas anyway? And sorry for spoiling those shows). But I know, censorship, I understand, so I should stop beating that dead horse and just be glad what we got. I mean, I’m still suffering from PTSD due to Guardian’s ending so trust me when I say I am entirely thankful.
After all, from a thematic point of view, it’s not like the ending doesn’t make sense; it actually does. The idea of both WWX and LWJ living clear of conscience has been reiterated time and again throughout the show, so the fact that LWJ would decide to abide by his duties instead of going off and having fun with WWX does indeed go along with the values established for him. In fact, one might say that during the 16 years of WWX’s absence, he was probably acting the most out of character since he seemed to have more or less shirked his duties as Gusulan Sect’s esteemed Hanguan-Jun. As Jiang Cheng mentioned in the second episode, LWJ has spent most of the past 16 years time just wandering the world, looking for someone, which of course we know who. Even Jin Guangyao mentioned that he never attended any of the big cultivation meetings. So for the past decade and a half Lan Zhan’s really been just living his own life, off on his own quest, and probably leaving all the major responsibilities of his sect to his brother and uncle. Now that WWX is back and the main villain is conquered, I can see how his guilt at abandoning his duties might have finally caught up with him and he realizes he might have some amends to make. After all, his uncle’s old and constantly spitting up blood, and his brother—dear poor Xichen who just makes my heart HURT when I think about him—is definitely in no condition to become Chief Cultivator. I thought about Jiang Cheng briefly, but he’s probably in the same unstable emotional state as Lan Xichen at this point. Hell, Lan XiChen, Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling should probably all sign up for some intense group therapy; can’t imagine how they could even function otherwise considering the emotional battering they just went through.
Anyway, getting back to the role of Chief Cultivator, in the novel, it was implied that Nie Huaisang was gunning for that position, but honestly, I actually thought that was a bit odd in the book because even though we know he’s the mastermind behind everything, it’s hard to imagine that he would want to step up to the plate and be in the limelight instead of staying in the shadows as he has been doing. I actually think the drama’s change to his ending made more sense.  Not to mention, since most of the cultivation world has known him as the know-nothing coward, if he were to suddenly do a 180 and become this strong, intelligent, assertive person, wouldn’t people be pretty suspicious of him as a person and be too wary to follow him? For better or worse, LWJ IS indeed the best candidate for that position at this specific moment in time. The scene at Lotus Pier where the other sects found out about Jin Guangyao’s heinous activities was illuminating in more ways than one since it also showed how wishy-washy and easily influenced the majority of the other sects were. Those guys are a bunch of dumbasses who need to be led, otherwise, if left to their own devices, the cultivation world would be in total chaos.
I also appreciated the fact that even though WWX looked downright heart-broken when he realized LWJ wasn’t going to explore the world with him (yet), it seems like he had actually stayed with Lan Zhan until he became Chief Cultivator, which probably didn’t happen overnight. I’m assuming this based on WWX’s wardrobe change from their scene with Sizhui and Wen Ning. I think it’s sweet that despite his disappointment, he still stayed with him for a bit.

The logic part of their parting holds water, but it’s the emotional part that I’m not entirely sold on. I mean, what the show is essentially trying to tell me is that a man who looks at Wei Ying like this:
Tumblr media
And this…
Tumblr media
And this….
Tumblr media
…would actually be ok with being separated from him? Again? Yeah. Right. Siubian.
Just the thought of Wei Ying having no one to protect him now from all the scary fluffy puppies of the world is probably enough to keep Lan Zhan up at nights. In terms of the bond between WWX and LWJ as it was established in the show—not even getting into how they are in the novel because then the notion of them separating would be downright ridiculous—it is pretty hard to accept that LWJ would be ok being away from Wei Ying. Even if the call of duty is loud, the siren song of WangXian has to eventually overpower everything else. The question is when, of course, and even though Wei Ying goes through yet another wardrobe change by the last scene, I can’t imagine that much time passed…I would like to think no more than just a year or two. At a certain point, LXC, being the generous, loving, understanding older brother that he always is, would probably realize how much LWJ misses WWX and offer to take over the Chief Cultivator role from him. But big bro does need time to emotionally recover so I think a year or two is a fair timespan. It’s not enough time for LXC to heal completely of course, God knows a decade probably would still not be enough for that, but a year or two probably would allow him to at least be able to pretend to be fine enough to function somewhat normally again. Ugh. Again, poor big bro.
Actually, if I think about it, one thing good about Wei Ying and Lan Zhan being separated for a short time is that this time around, WWX can be the one missing and pining after LWJ instead.  I can easily imagine him making detailed mental notes of every place he has visited and everything he’s done that is fun for when he finally reunites with Lan Zhan, he can take him through all of his journeys so that they can then experience together what he had to experience alone during their time apart.
I also like that when Wei Ying hears his name being called, he actually looks shocked…
Tumblr media
…which clearly indicates he never expected Lan Zhan to appear at all, which means they didn’t plan this reunion, that Lan Zhan just magically found Wei Ying again. That is seriously so romantic. I’m sure Lan Zhan kept tabs on Wei Ying’s whereabouts all the time, I refuse to believe that he wouldn’t at least do that, but still, that hilltop looked pretty out there in the wilderness so it’s truly beautiful that he still managed to pinpoint where Wei Ying was to surprise him. Or maybe the energy he shared with Wei Ying acts as a sort of GPS now so he can always easily find the other man no matter where he is? That’s romantic too.
So at the end of the day, I feel pretty satisfied and content. Since I fell in love with the show, I’ve literally been on pins and needles worrying about how the show will end, if Team CQL would somehow lose their minds and just screw everything up or be forced to screw everything up because of censorship. I can finally breathe easy now…well, somewhat…there’s still movies to worry about, but I’m just a worrywart by nature. With their splendid track record so far, I’m sure Team CQL will continue to deliver and make us happy in terms of WangXian.

“After we went to travel the world together everything was spread into the world as ‘rumors say’”.- from WWX’ character song 曲尽陈情 (“Songs end with Chen Qing”)
“With you by my side, I hope you’ve been well since the last time we’ve met”.  -from LWJ’s character song 不忘 (“Won’t Forget”).
