Jack felt sick to his stomach. He was so nervous, every so often he’d pinch himself to make sure he really was in his dressing room getting ready to film his very own Tiny Desk concert. He had about an hour to get ready and perform. His phone went off and quickly checked who it was.
It was Miriam letting him know she pulled up to the studio. Jack had the genius idea to invite her to the filming. They’ve been talking the last two weeks, but they haven’t seen each other since he came over to drop off her jacket. She went to Paris for couture week but then she came back to  LA before heading off to London so he decided to ask her to hang out.
“I’ll be right back.” He told Urban.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Miriam’s outside.” Jack replied.
Urban made a face. He couldn’t quite place it but there was something about Miriam that he didn’t vibe with, but it’s been a while since his best friend showed any interest so he kept his mouth shut. He just knew not to trust nepo babies like Miriam.
Jack noticed the face his best friend made, but didn’t push it. He grabbed his phone and went outside. He spotted Miriam getting out of a G-Wagon uber with a hot starbucks cup and a small pastry bag. He took her in. She wore an ombre puffer jacket that went from pink to orange with white circles throughout the jacket. Under she had a white top paired with jeans and some black old school Vans.
“Hey!” she grinned.
Miriam reached for a hug but Jack curved her. She mentally smacked her head and played with the brown sleeve on her cup.
“How was Paris?” he asked as they walked to the studio. He’d seen some pictures of her sitting front row at fashion shows and some tiktoks of her with designers styling some models for fashion shows.
“Exhausting and smelly.” She shrugged, still embarrassed that he didn’t hug her. She passed him her drink and pastry bag. “Wait, can you hold this? I have to send my parents my location since I Ubered here.”
“Yeah,” he nodded. He was curious and peeked in the pastry bag. Inside were a few honey packets and a stir stick. He lifted the cup to see what she ordered, but he couldn’t see it because the sleeve covered the tag so he asked, “What did you get?”
“A steamed lemonade.” Miriam said, not looking up from her phone. Her friends were teasing her on their group chat because she told him she couldn't hang out because she made a prior commitment to Jack.
“A what?” he asked.
“A steamed lemonade. My throat was feeling a bit scratchy from traveling so I got a lemonade with a bunch of honey packets to add. I need to coat my throat with something thick and smooth.” she explained rubbing her throat.
“I could’ve coated your throat for free, no need to spend, what? $6?” he told her.
“It was three dollars. But I’ll take your services next time.” she said.
“I mean technically you’d be the one doing the service…”
“What do you mean–OH!” she giggled, covering her mouth when she realized what he meant. “At least I won’t hurt you when I go deep.”
It took Jack a second for him to understand that she was referring to What’s Poppin’ where he talks about how it hurts when someone deepthroats him. Before he could say another remark, they were in his dressing room.
“Miriam, everyone. Everyone, Miriam.” Jack said, introducing her to the group.
“Hi,” she waved nervously.
She went to a corner and sat down to prepare her drink while Jack went to his stylist to look over the potential outfits. Miriam grabbed her mini iPad that she mainly used for reading and began going over her script for Batman. She was feeling a lot of pressure. She had to be above and beyond in the movie because she knew how nitpicky comic book people got. She was already on thin ice because she wasn’t white and the comic book character was pale with red hair. Neither which Miriam had. She was also nervous because it was her second time acting.
With ‘In the Heights’ it was easier for her because she’s been in tons of musicals, but with Batman it was completely different. There were more action scenes with stunts and special effects. She was filming a scene where a huge SUV crashes into a church and she gets hurled into a crowd to avoid getting hit. Though an upside was that she was going to kiss Robert Pattinson.
“Thoughts?” Jack asked, walking over to her in an all bright almost neon green silk shirt and shorts set. Miriam locked her iPad and made a face when she saw him. “You know what, I just got all of them with that face you made.”
“I’m sorry. The color,” she moved her hand in circle motion, “is just not part of the color palette of the background you showed me.”
“Noted.” he chuckled.
Miriam noticed the face his stylist made and she felt bad. She was being disrespectful by overstepping and judging her work when Jack’s stylist didn’t ask her directly. “Or wear what you’re comfortable with. It’s not my place to comment.” she quickly added.
“We have more options, Jack.” his stylist called him over.
She dramatically slid the hangers on the clothing rack. Jack playfully rolled his eyes and sauntered over to her. He took another garment bag and went to change. He came back out in a beige leather pants and jacket set with a white knit polo under. In Miriam’s opinion he looked a hundred times better than the first look and it fit the set design.
Jack put on his Kentucky state chain and his PG ring. He checked himself out in the mirror doing cheesy poses and faces. He bit his lip and rubbed his beard, making Miriam laugh. She leaned against the vanity and admired how he looked. He was very handsome. It added to his charm and humor.
He reminded her of a guy she hooked up with when she was nineteen. They met at Outside Lands at an after party and he was going around networking and promoting an upcoming album. He went up to Mmiriam and her friends, Malia and Claudia, and he flirted with Miriam the whole time. He made her laugh a few times and next thing she knew she was dry humping him in the back of an uber en route to his hotel. To this day she wished she got the guy’s number or something because he was one of the best she had in a while and one of the only guys to get her off through missionary.
“What are you thinking about?” Jack asked her, pulling her from her thoughts.
“Oh, I forgot.” she giggled.
“You like this?” he gestured to his outfit.
“Yeah,” she nodded.
“For real?” he asked, grinning.
“Yesss!” she giggled.
“Are you certain?” he asked her once more as he stepped in between her legs.
Miriam felt her cheeks warm up the more she giggled. She covered her face with her hands. She didn’t know why she was laughing. Jack didn’t say anything remotely funny.
“Jack, they’re ready for you.” one of his managers said.
“Okay, thanks.” he nodded. He turned back to Miriam and grinned. “Show time.”
Jack tentatively placed his arm around Miriam as they walked to set. He guided her to her seat next to his friends. The director came by and gave Jack a rundown of how his performance was gonna go. It was mainly just going over that he had everything ready since he’d been rehearsing for the last few days. He was performing with a live band and a few backup singers.
He was about to go up to the band but he turned back. “Can you hold this?” He asked Miriam. He removed his chain and placed it on her. “I changed my mind about wearing it.”
“Do you think my delicate clavicle can hold it?” she asked, referring to a previous facetime where he teased her about a chunky necklace she wore to a fashion show.
“If not, at least it’ll anchor you in place so you won’t run off with it.” He joked.
“As if I’d want to be caught wearing silver.”
“Excuse you, this is white gold.” he said defensively, running his finger under the chain dangerously close to Miriam’s nipple.
“Is your ring also white gold?” she asked, holding his hand to inspect his ring.
“Your hand is warm.” He commented, ignoring what she asked him.
She sandwiched his hands with hers. They were huge compared to hers, but surprisingly soft and smooth. His nails were perfectly manicured too, putting her chipped gel nails to shame.
“Jack, it’s time.” someone called from behind.
“Damn, and just as my hands started to get warm.” he pouted.
“Break a leg.” Miriam called as he went to get mic'd up.
He looked over his shoulder and pretended that his leg gave out. He dragged his leg earning an eye roll from his best friend.
Miriam watched Jack. He went around introducing himself and greeting everyone. And it was genuine. Not that ‘yeah I’m fucking famous and you should be honored to be i the same room as me’ kind of way that many people have done around her. She smiled to herself and settled in her seat.
She was excited to see him perform. When they started talking, she went out of her way to get into his music. He was even kind enough to go through all his discography with her and explained the differences between mixtapes and full on albums.
Every so often Jack would make eye contact with her as he performed. It was like she was getting her own private show. Not that she minded at all, she was all about eye contact. His voice was so velvety and smooth and she couldn't help but get lost in the music.
*
After Jack’s performance, they went back to the rental he was staying at and watched a few movies. There wasn’t anything to make a proper meal with so they went out to get food. They couldn’t decide on anything so they settled for tacos.
Miriam reached back Jack’s hand as she led them to a table in the back of the restaurant. When they reached their table, Jack pulled out her chair.
“Oh thanks,” she smiled. She grabbed her phone from pocket. “Let me pull up the menu for you.”
“I’m just getting some ay-sad-a tacos.” He told her.
“You’re getting what?” she giggled.
“Ay-sad-a tacos.” he repeated himself.
“What’s DJ Khaled’s son’s name?”
“Asahd.” He answered her.
“Okay now add an ‘uh’ at the end.” Miriam instructed.
“Asahd-uh?” Jack said hesitantly.
“Perfect.” she clapped.
Miriam eventually went to order for them. It was getting packed and if they both got up to order, they would lose their table. She reached for her house keys inside a secret pocket and used them to open their drinks. She got a Squirt and Jack asked for a Topochico.
“How many things do you have in your coat?” Jack asked curiously as he squeezed some lime in his drink.
“Actually, I’m not sure. Let’s see.”
She removed it and placed it on her lap. She pulled out her phone, a small card holder in one pocket. In another she pulled out her pomegranate chapstick and a small tin of altoids. In the secret pocket she pulled out her keys, some cash, and a sleeve of condoms.
“You got plans for later?” He asked jokingly, trying his best to mask his jealousy.
It shouldn’t bother him at the possibility that she could be seeing someone, but it did. They’ve been talking for a while and he was trying his best to be respectful and not do anything to cross any boundaries.
“God no.” she snatched the sleeve back, shoving it deep in her jacket. “I haven’t had sex in months. I must’ve hid them there when I moved back home.”
“I don’t judge. Personally I'm an ultra thin kind of guy.” He told her.
“I’ll make a note for next time.” she rolled her eyes.
Their food came shortly. Miriam ordered a carne asada quesadilla with a side of consome. She wasn’t a fan of the birria but the consome was divine. For Jack she ordered him five tacos de carne asada. Spent the entire time laughing and talking among themself as they ate.
When they finished, Jack drove Miriam home. It was almost eleven at night and beforehand she had told him that she had to be up early to prepare for her flight back to London.
Jack parked in front of the gate of her house. He got out and helped her out of the car. That was when he noticed her rubbing her neck.
“Damn, was the chain too heavy for you?” Jack asked her.
“Probably.” she winced, rubbing her shoulder.
“Here,” He held her hips and spun her so that she was giving him her back. He gently massaged her shoulders and neck. “Better?”
“Yeah.” She quietly moaned.
“You really do have a delicate neck.” He teased her.
“I’m gonna make Beto start working out my neck and not my ass.” she said, turning to face him to see his reaction. She’d caught him checking her ass out a few times. She knew it was one of her greatest assets.
“I’ll buy you a light weight chain so your ass doesn’t get sacrificed.” He smirked.
Miriam rolled her eyes and decided to change the topic. “I had fun today.”
“Yeah?” He asked, caught off guard.
“Honest.” She nodded. “It was cool to see you in your element. You’re meant to perform. Not many people have that kind of natural stage presence that you have. So thanks for sharing that piece of you.”
“That’s probably one of the nicest things someone has ever told me about me and my artistry. You don’t know how much your words mean to me.”
“Don’t compliment me, I just complimented you.” she pressed her head on his chest, bashfully.
Miriam looked up at Jack’s bright blue eyes. Jack dropped down his eyes to her lips. Then they wandered back to her eyes. Without thinking twice, Jack cupped her cheek and leaned in to kiss her. But they were cut off by the door by the gate opening, making them pull away. Mateo stepped out of the gate with his arms crossed.
“Miriam, que son estas horas de llegar.” He asked.
“Apa,” she nodded her head to go back inside.
“Hi, Mr. Dominguez,” Jack smiled, stretching his hand out to him. “I’m Jack, we met at the Chelsea game a few weeks ago.”
“Yeah,” he nodded, shaking his hand. He looked at Miriam. “We leave early tomorrow.”
“I know papi.”
“Good night, Jack.” Mateo told him without waiting for a response.
“I’m sorry about that.” Miriam hugged herself. “I should get going. If you’re in LA we should meet up when I get back.”
“Yeah, if not I’ll fly out and see you.” Jack suggested.
“You’d fly out to see lil old me.” she grinned.
“I’ll takin' trips from here to Rome.” He said.
“Not you quoting Fergie.” she rolled her eyes, getting the ‘Glamorous’ reference.
“Fergie or not, I’m deadass. I’ll meet you wherever you go.” He said earnestly.
“Bye, Jack.” She smiled softly.
Miriam walked to the gate. With a final glance she tucked her curls back and smiled at Jack then entered her home.
Jack walked back to the car. He checked his phone and smiled at his new lockscreen. It was of him and Miiram after he performed. It was a mirror selfie of them. He did his signature 'L' with his hand while the other was casually over Miriam’s chest. She had a bright smile while she took the picture. Jack didn’t know it yet but Miriam was going to leave an imprint on him and his music.

Today's setlist was literally the same as the first day of Kyoto, to complete my bad luck of today, because I had to go and mention my preference. However, it ended on a much better note than the 16th because it wasn't a special day, and there were so many announcements after the show. And overall, of course it was amazing nevertheless and I knew what to expect but it went a bit beyond that.
I'll focus mostly on the highlights, or differences from the past performances of this week.
I think that everyone was back to wearing their MOAN outfits like on the first day (which also hinted that the setlist might be the same), except Kyo. He wore a two-piece similar to day 2 which showed a large portion of his abdomen above his hips, but the two pieces were completely different. The top had puffy sleeves and frills on the shoulders, which prevented his massive pearl necklace accessory from slipping when he moved, like it had on the 17th eventually. The bottom piece was a simple long skirt, no folds. All black, of course. There were short portions of frills near the hips on the skirt. This time, with my seat much closer to the stage, I could see the beautiful faded pink outline of his jaw and the side of his face, with his face maybe whitened a bit.
Since I'd seen online that Zepp DiverCity Tokyo had a rather flat floor, I didn't want to risk being unable to see even more, so I purchased a ticket being resold. It turns out that line A was inexistent, so the first line in front was B. Honestly, while it was awesome to see things up closer, especially Kyo's facial expressions this time, I do appreciate having seen sukekiyo from afar, because their shows have so much theatrics thanks to the projections. I literally barely saw them at all from where I sat today.
The show started with awful audio for Margaret, bur it improved after a while. Kyo for some reason kind of forgot "Iro wa ochi namida ni" and maybe the one that followed too. He tried to act natural and pick back up when he could. It was odd because the other members also made mistakes and yet this was the show being filmed. I think it was during Candis that one of the repeated keyboard notes was played one time too many, and there was another song in which it was UtA who did something wacky with his pedals which sounded super off.
For Gloss, I can't remember any highlights. Very emotional "Kokoro wo shibaritsukete" moments though.
Aishita Shinzou, I think that was the song during which Kyo drops to the floor and snakes his way back up slowly, and that he later teased a leg by raising his skirt. A lot of dancing! And it was definitely at the part about "tensed flesh" that Kyo touched the area between his legs seductively.
Candis, definitely from my view way to the right of the stage but also on the first floor, it was super not obvious that the projection made the stage look like the PV location. Anyway, super fun with the penlight! I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed as if Kyo sometimes could raise his hand higher during the "Iya Iya Iya", but that he kind of restricted how high he did it because we also couldn't raise our penlights to block anything outside of our own little space.
From the side by the way, and because Kyo kept raising his arms and arching his back in some songs, it was rather hot to see his tattooed skin move in the space between his pieces of clothing!
Oh and the way Kyo rotates on the spot at the end of most songs to sip water or just turn his back to us, arms straight to his sides, really looks so cool and kind of like a doll.
Valentina was great, of course! Even though Kyo seemed to point the kiss without a word everywhere except toward my section. I forgot to mention it before, but there is a time when he doesn't sing "Do you need me?"x2, I think when the song mellows down before pumping back up. I don't know if it's just for these Shikkoku no Gi shows, but he looks at us and places his index finger to his mouth, as if to make sure that we stay quiet, or maybe it's more in-character because the "Don't answer" comes after those lyrics in other parts of the song. So it's as if the character doesn't even ask if the other person needs them because they don't want to know, in fact. But then he does sing it in the louder part that comes next hahah.
I can't remember anything specific for MOAN.
Oh but yo, I think it was in Aishita Shinzou and another one of those pop songs, Kyo swung his hips sideways so much, it was nothing new to him.
Kuchi ni ringo had the "sono makka na iro janai" screeched again. Being under the blue sea of light this time, the vision is actually unobstructed but the effect can't be appreciated as much. In the song, during the Lan lan lan part, Kyo swung his arm around in a kind of stabbing manner, but I guess he was hammering a nail like he then sings. At the end of the song, his joined fingertips forming a womb actually spent more time moving downward past his hips, and he seemed to offer it outward much less. He even made it move more toward his chest, maybe over his heart? He got tangled up in one of the pearl necklaces and like a pro, he just adjusted his rotation for the next "Aaah Shikyuu ga hoshii".
aftermath really displays Kyo's high-pitched notes in all their glory.
After that, Kyo again sat down to be pampered, a zoom projected on screen simultaneously. It seemed to be much, much shorter tonight though, and the chair was different, a normal height and styled more like the one that was on stage in the tour where Kyo had the fluffy white petticoat. The session that followed had a mix of emotions, and Kyo generally felt more free to end some songs with a reverberating grunt, sigh, etc.
Houmonsha X picked up on that generally whiny/frustrated improvised session and it felt like Kyo really had quite the range of facial expressions. He also makes most of the same gestures as in the PV, which is broadcast above him on the screen. His dancing was more robotic, and I don't know if he danced as if it to avoid stepping on the lights this time around. From the first floor, you totally can't see that detail.
Rongai na ikimono toshite was superb. Intense, aggressive. I think it was in this song that there was a lot of Kyo gesturing to hit the back of his hands against one another. I don't know what it was supposed to refer to. His rings were supposed to hit?
The reflective part of "Aishita? Aishita...i" has a spiral composed of many lines swirling, it's perfect for the mood. Rongai na ikimono toshite was definitely one of the songs where Kyo continued to make guttural sounds at the end, where in the studio recording he's singing the first line in reverse.
Kawattekuremasen deshou ka? was great again, a bit less emotional than I personally feel about it, but still. A majority of the lyrics were added to the videos being displayed this time around! It felt like it added more personality to the song. Yet somehow, the part of "Naze watashi dake hontou no ai wo shiranai" is the one omitted from the screen, like more emphasis is put on the following verse. And when Kyo sings the title of the song, he comes up to the screen and essentially asks whether anyone here in the audience could consider changing places. At the end of the song, Kyo purposely places his hands over the pink lights on his mic stand to obscure his face and create a more dramatic ending.
The biggest highlight of the night by a land slide is Yumemi doro! To set up the situation, at the end of Kawattekuremasen deshou ka?, Kyo's foot caught in either his mic stand or his mic cord, almost making the stand fall over. He noticed on time and prevented it. But that just seemed to give him an idea, because he almost pole-danced that mic stand in Yumemi doro. He then lifted his skirt again I think on both sides, but definitely on his left side high enough that we got to see the underpant (not actual underwear) section of the skirt, and he lifted that exposed leg twice to hug the mic stand.
There was one song in the lot where Kyo dropped to the floor, maybe that aforementioned time in Aishita Shinzou, and he licked his stand about near the height where someone's hips could be, but that's just a measurement for you all, I don't know if it was intended hah.
The other thing about Yumemi doro is that range of distorted vocals which was again even more enhanced and deranged in this live performance. Being closer, it was so cool to observe not only Kyo's facial expressions during those, but also the way he moves his jaw, his throat, etc. to produce that diversity.
Scarlet was more tame in comparison, but anything would be. The drums and bass really hit you full force the most in this song.
Tada, mada, watashi. was powerful as always. I was able to confirm that it's "Oyasumi" in hiragana that's displayed right before the restart of the song near the last portion.
Hakudaku and Uso, same as before.
Before Kokyuu... Kyo slowly came back up to the mic stand after emitting a sad sigh, eyes downcast.
Fortunately, we weren't left on that note. After Takumi, the last one to leave, bowed a couple of times on his way out, there were all the announcements that I posted, plus a best album to be released too. Each time a specific announcement ended, the message on screen said: "Otanoshimini..." (Look forward to it...) until the last one, which sounded more authoritary: "Look forward to it!"
I got my little share of Frameout kara no because it was the song used during the announcement for the tour in August, I guess.
Overall, I'm so glad that this show got filmed. It's weird not seeing cameramen moving around like during Dir en grey shows: what I saw was one small camera on a stand at the very edges of the stage, one small on a very short stand right in front of Kyo on stage, pointing up at him, and a camera mounted on a tall arm that kept moving around, from the side of the stage besides Mika. There must have been other cameras in the back of the venue too.
And Takao Ogata was right there when Kyo hugged the mic stand with his legs and showed off his left leg up on it. We better see those pictures at some point!!

Dokomi 2023, post-report
Post-greetings from Dusseldorf Germany: I had a great time at the event, it was such a lovely place. Everyone was very kind, polite, and helpful with the language difference. I had a great neighbour (Margaret), and was able to meet a number of fans and friends in the EU. I hope everyone who attended also had a good time.
(Extra big thanks to the staff and volunteers who took care of us all weekend---special shoutouts especially to Arian and Thomas who went above and beyond. We couldn't have made it without you.)
Both my assistant and I are back home now, so I thought I'd take some time to do a write-up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it's not my first featured rodeo, it's not often I get invited to an event so massive in scale. Seeing my own illustration highlighted in various places is always heartwarming.
I was told Dokomi doubled-up in numbers from the previous year (85k--->150k attendance). Despite the daunting numbers, it didn't particularly feel clustered because the all the other halls are openly spaced nearby, and you could freely walk between them. The ceilings are also very tall and well-lit by both top lighting and natural sunlight.
I really liked the fact that the event is badge-less and that there aren't too many check-points (security was very polite regardless). I managed to make some time to wander around freely and felt very relaxed in the space. Although I heard there were a small number of reports, I think that comes naturally with any small or big event. It's always good to be mindful of yourself and your neighbours. Overall, it's still a relatively safe and casual congregation.
In particular I was impressed with the many services offered to artists (such as food catering, equipment, etc), as well as the staff response rate and attentiveness. It might be difficult to return any time soon, but I'll always remember the positive experience I had at Dokomi.
It has been a hectic week, but I'm glad I was able to attend nontheless, and I'm grateful for all the feedback. Thank you kindly for visiting my booth if you got the chance to.
For the event, I had a giant vinyl print of Pikkorin made, which seemed to have been eye-catching. It did quite well with the crowd, which made me happy.
Tumblr media
There were also a number of attendees that expressed interest in my originals. Artists getting love for their original works is always a big mood boost.
Tumblr media
(attached: a sketch of Pikkorin, for a commission request)
Overall, it was a different crowd at Dokomi from what I'm used to, both in vibes and in preferences. For those that have attended North American conventions exclusively, it's just comparatively way more chill here.
But what surprised me most was the overwhelming love for Kaitou Jeanne and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Both of which, seemed to be a big part of many visitor's childhoods. I heard it was in part because of dubbing.
Tumblr media
(Of course, I too, purchased a wonderful Yu-Gi-Oh print from another artist because it was so beautiful.)
Tumblr media
(image: a sketch of Atem, drawn on shikishi) (Other at-con sketches will be slowly posted to my instagram)
Tumblr media
(My only other purchase was this adorable bag by The BunBun shop, which was too cute to ignore.)
In terms of location, the convention center and the place I was staying is near or around Little Tokyo. I was surprised there was such a thing in Dusseldorf, but it seems like Asian food and mild curry is quite popular here. Actually, the majority of the week I was eating Japanese food so I didn't quite feel like I was in Germany yet.
My hotel had this adorable side case full of figures though. I especially adore and appreciate the Jibanyan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the con ended, my assistant and I did actually manage to go walk around here and there. We meandered around King's Avenue. It was a bit cloudy all week, which felt nice and cooling.
We walked all over to all sorts of cafes, bakeries, and meat shops.
Tumblr media
Lunch was tasty...German potatoes, cheese, and sausages are an entirely different experience. The potatoes were so good, I couldn't help but wonder if it's simply a different strain/variety, or just darn good cooking (or both).
We also got this slow roast pork with mash and beets one night, that was juicy and tender on the inside, but crispy on the outside, and I can't help but miss it already. Also, tax-inclusive pricing is 10/10.
It's regrettable I could not stay longer but alas, work awaits.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Final thoughts:
Although it may be difficult for international artists to attend Dokomi given the cost and distance, I think the experience was still very fun and worthwhile. The food alone was worth it.
If you get the chance to, plan well and thoughtfully. I recommend it.
It was always a toss up on whether Kanan woke before Hera did each morning. There were plenty of mornings when he woke up alone because she had an early morning mission, or because she’d never come to bed in the first place because she was too busy working on something for Sato or Ahsoka or one of the thousands of other people she was determined to help.
It wasn’t that Kanan disliked her helping people. She wouldn’t be the woman he loved if she didn’t do that. But that didn’t mean she should neglect herself, like when he found her awake at all hours of the night and early morning, studying a datapad or trying to find a new place to locate supplies for the Rebellion.
This happened far too often for Kanan’s liking, but he was already working on becoming an expert at convincing her to get some sleep.
Other mornings, he woke up first, finding Hera still asleep next to him. Some of the time, he slipped out of bed and did his morning meditations, readying himself for the day ahead of him. Other times, he let himself watch Hera sleep for a little while, just enjoying the fact that he was by her side.
But his favorite mornings were the ones where they got up at the same time, before everyone else— Sabine and Ezra generally slept in unless instructed otherwise, and Zeb had mastered the ability of getting up at exactly the right moment so they had at least an hour before he appeared. It was a routine they’d perfected over the past eight years, and Kanan loved it.
They made their way to the kitchen together— Kanan’s hair bundled out of the way messily, still yawning as he shuffled towards the cupboards. Hera looked a little more awake, other than the dark circles under her eyes that Kanan never mentioned but always worried about.
She was the one that went to the caf maker and started it, filling it with the aromatic beans. No one made caf like Hera. Kanan had sworn up and down from the first time he’d tasted it that it was the best he’d ever drunk, and she would always laugh at him. But she kept making the caf, and he’d still take it over the fanciest brews from the moons of Rion and beyond.
While she worked on that, Kanan started on breakfast. What he made varied from day to day— most mornings it was something quick and easy, like oatmeal or frozen sausages or something they could make quickly. But there were times when he liked to go with something fancier, too. French toast, bacon and eggs when they could get them, waffles (Zeb and Ezra’s favorite), or the spicy sausage from Karlini that didn’t come pre-formed (Sabine’s favorite).
This was one of those days, and he started digging through the cooling unit to see what he could come up with.
“What’s on the menu today?” Hera asked from her position by the caf maker, her voice still a little raspy with the sleep. Kanan felt the corner of his mouth turn up into a small smile at the sound. Even now her voice was the most beautiful thing he’d ever heard.
“Good question.” Frowning at the contents of the cooling supply unit, Kanan said, “Well, we’ve got a couple eggs left— not enough for breakfast burritos or anything like that. But I’m pretty sure we have enough flour left, and we’ve got butter— is there baking powder in the cupboard above you?”
Pulling open the cupboard, Hera pulled out an orange tin. “There is.”
“Good,” Kanan said with a grin. “Waffles it is.”
Hera snorted with amusement as she passed him the tin and started to open the cupboards next to her. “Why doesn’t that surprise me?”
“Because you know how much everyone, including you, loves my waffles?” Kanan suggested, pulling the waffle iron out of its specially assigned alcove in front of him and plugging it in. As he began to assemble the ingredients, he heard Hera laugh, and couldn’t resist a smile in response.
It had been a little over seven years since he’d met Hera and joined her crew, six since that relationship became something far stronger than just crew mates, or even friends, and closer to five since a series of near death experiences including being jumped by a bounty hunter, the Ghost getting stolen (along with Zeb and Chopper), and getting stranded on a tropical planet had led to their relationship becoming something permanent.
While Hera’s culture didn’t do wedding rings, the moon orbiting Rion where they’d made things official did, and Kanan hadn’t hesitated at the price. He’d been ready, ready to commit everything he had to this woman. And, by some miracle, she had been, too.
Neither of them still wore the rings— giving the Empire more leverage against either of them was the last thing they wanted to do, and that would make it too obvious— but Kanan still carried his with him everywhere. He knew Hera did the same.
As he started mixing up the batter for the waffles, he sensed rather than heard her behind him, and glanced over his shoulder to see her approaching with two mugs of caf. “Thanks,” he said, turning and accepting the mug gratefully.
“Any time, love.” Settling against the counter next to him, Hera watched as he took the first sip, closing his eyes to savor the taste.
Opening his eyes, he grinned at her. “Incredible as always, Captain Hera. If this Rebellion thing doesn’t work out, you could set up shop.”
Though she rolled her eyes, Kanan could see she was pleased. “You’d better hope this Rebellion thing works out.”
“Oh, I don’t know,” Kanan said, turning back to his work. Setting his caf mug to the side, he selected one of the few remaining eggs as he said, “I think it would be a pretty good job for us. You make the caf, I make the food.”
“And where does the Empire fit into this daydream of yours?” Hera quipped, and Kanan frowned.
Cracking the first egg, he said, “Forgot about them. Fine, we’ll do it after this whole Rebellion thing works out.” He cracked two more eggs, then started measuring out the milk as he continued. “Now, obviously, the kids can come with us. Zeb’s the busboy, Chopper and Ezra can be waiters, and Sabine’s my sous chef. Rex can even come if he wants— what?”
He caught Hera watching him, an odd expression on her face. “Nothing,” she said, glancing back down at her caf. “Just— it sounds nice, actually.”
“Of course it does,” Kanan told her. Pausing, he set aside the measuring cup and moved to stand in front of her. “Hey.”
She glanced up, and Kanan felt his heart flutter just a little when he met those green eyes of hers. It had been years, but words still failed him half the time. He thought they probably always would.
“Hey,” she said quietly, smiling at him. “What?”
“Once this is over, I’ll go anywhere you do,” he told her. “You know that, right? We’ll figure out what our future is together once we win this.”
“If we win this.” The words were quiet, and Kanan knew why. Hera was always the strong one, the one who had utter faith in the Rebellion. At least that was how she acted.
But everyone had doubts, even her. “When,” he told her firmly. “We’re gonna win this.” Leaning in, he kissed her gently, feeling her move away from the counter and towards him.
When he pulled away, he added, “And that’s a Kanan guarantee.”
As he moved back to work, he heard Hera laugh. “That’s not a thing.”
“It should be.”
“Hmm, I don’t know about that, dear.”
As Kanan poured the first dollop of batter into the waffle iron, he shot her a grin. “Then you’re just gonna have to trust me.”
The smile she sent back warmed him to the core. “You know I do.”
Kanan briefly contemplated stealing another kiss, but he could hear the sounds of doors opening and voices from deeper in the Ghost. The kids were up, which meant their limited private time was over for now.
But that was alright. He had the rest of his life to spend with Hera, and his family, and he intended to enjoy every minute of it.
1,2,3, and 19 for any OC? :3
Thanks for asking! I'm going to answer your question with my main D&D character Hai for this one.
What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?
Our party needed a tank, so I was thinking of creating a martial character with a strength based stat. You know which (fantasy) race shows up as one of the first options on D&D beyond? Half-orc.
So I chose a Half-Orc, I wanted to really go against the grain of what that fantasy race is associated with, and decided to choose a character with a noble background.
So yeah, that was the beginning into her backstory, and for most of my characters it will probably be backstory!
2. Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?
Yes I did! @silly-goofy-mood was creating a character concept more or less at the same time as I was, and we wanted our characters to have some sort of connection prior to campaign. We eventually decided on being exes.
Otherwise, i think I knew that I wanted Hai to have a deity so I was also aware of one god, the God of the Unknown, which was my DM's creation @theccrowsnest!
All other characters and OCs were mostly just figures from the past that only now am I really beginning to flesh out. This consists of a human mother, a human stepfather, an orc father, an orc grandma, and a younger sibling, all which were concepts that I created around Hai.
I don't know if you noticed, but there's already two dads in the equation, three because the God of the Unknown is basically a dad, four if you count the first mate who I'll touch up on later.
3. How did you choose their name?
I wanted some spice in this fantasy campaign so I went to my heritage, but also be aware that my Chinese is pretty mid.
Hailang = 海浪 (hǎi làng)
Ocean waves. Yep. I named a character ocean waves. But! Consider that it is a pirate campaign so I needed to get even more sea themed stuff.
By the way if you're thinking of naming your character this, don't. Every time someone says "Hi" I don't know if they're talking about my character or greeting me because I'm not with a group of people who know about Mandarin Chinese tones nor do I expect them to. This was shortened to "Hai" because it was a cute nickname in my mind, until of course, reality caught up to me about the "Hi" as a greeting vs "Hai" as a name thing.
Only after I named her did I realize the conflict between the big famous Japanese wave that might be conflated with her name. I did not mean that. Whoops. And also, the Japanese word for indicating “Yes” so. Whoops x2.
Also after I named her, I realized that there's 骇浪 (Trad. 駭浪 Pinyin: hài làng) or “swelling/stormy seas" according to my translator app (can you tell, I'm not that proficient in the language). Well. My character has the personality of someone who's pretty calm so we'll see what happens. Will she start becoming more akin to those stormy seas or stay the way she is? I'm asking because I don't know either.
Saangbiar = “上边儿” trad: “上邊兒” (sǎng - An incorrect interpretation of the Wu dialect, biār - erhua Northern/Beijing Dialect)
Yeah. If I stuck to an actual Wu Chinese dialect, her last name would be "Zabiar," as zɑ̃ would be the correct tone for 上, so that's my bad.
Originally, I was going to have Hai's last name be from the north, as it means "above," but uh then my DM's map came out and I realized the location from where that last name came from would be the south.
Fair, because I also tried to use the Wu dialect, which is a much more south-eastern dialect of Chinese, in her name. Did I want to change her entire name of "above" to "below" just to fit the standards of a fantasy land? No, not really. Plus, I was getting kind of attached to it already, with the funky non-pinyin type spelling Frankenstein of two Chinese dialects that are part of my heritage (tho I messed up one I apologize to everyone on that side of the fam).
And that is how I got her name.
19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?
Ooo, great question. Fun fact, Hai's favorite fruit is oranges because the island that all the orcs are from produces those. She's got memories of sharing the pieces between her and her grandma (orc dad's side, 奶奶, iykyk).
She also shares these with the First Mate of the ship, @wall-e-gorl's character. Pirates you know, gotta keep up the citrus fruits lest the scurvy gets you, matey.
Edit: also oh my gosh I need to find the art they did of the oranges stattt
WIP
Digging through my folders found me this, a WIP I'd started for Cake's birtday before spiralling off into other ones. I had vague notions for it, and although I don't have plans to continue anytime soon it deserves to have a spot in my archives just in case I lose it again
----------------------------
‘Sorry, were you-?’
‘No no, go ahead.’
‘Thank you.’
‘Oh no, I shouldn’t have been there anyway. Just waiting for someone.’
‘Ah.’ Gabriel slides up to the coffee machine and sticks out his hand to the man he just moved, ‘Gabriel. Hello, by the way.’
‘Arthur.’
Arthur’s hands are rough. His handshake is firm, a solid squeeze of Gabriel’s fingers and a single jerk down that feels familiar in its assuredness. He knew someone who shook like that before, he thinks. Someone long, long ago.
‘Lovely to meet you.’
‘Likewise.’
----------------------------
‘So, how did it go?’
‘I’m sorry?’
‘Your interview.’
‘Ah, that.’ Gabriel smiles and leans against the counter, ‘I’m surprised you remembered.’
Arthur shrugs dismissively but looks pleased, ‘Labouring, wasn’t it?’
‘Building, specifically.’ Gabriel looks out of the communal dining hall’s windows to the grassy flatlands beyond. Perfect location, perfect weather- there was a whole estate planned. Two men jog in the distance around the marked-out area, one thin one thick and both almost white blonde, and Gabriel watches the steady pump pump pump of their arms, ‘I wanted to try for site manager but I went for regular construction in the end.’
Arthur hesitates, ‘And?’
‘I got it. Start tomorrow.’
‘Congrats.’ Arthur does not do public displays of emotion. Gabriel has known him long enough to know this, and easily catches Arthur’s arm twitch as if to reach for him. It is over in a second and it stays safely where it is, crossed over his chest. ‘I said you had no reason to be nervous. They always need people.’
Gabriel laughs, ‘Yeah, I know.’
‘And you’re really good.’
‘Thanks, Art.’
‘What are you thanking me for? It’s true. Should have gone for the manager like I told you to.’
Gabriel snorts and looks down into his mug. Coffee still tastes the same, still wrong. ‘I don’t mind. All I really wanted has already happened.’
----------------------------
‘When did you decide to come to Earth?’ Gabriel’s hands are in the grass, knuckles curled down to the soil. It is hard and cool, the earth shaded by the tall, thick tree at his back, ‘Was it long?’
On his ladder, Arthur lets out a breath and looks up at the sky. ‘I don’t know. It feels like forever.’
 They are in his gardens, the ones he keeps just for fun. Outside of the crop fields and orchards which take up most of his time, as wide and long as they could go and lined with glittering greenhouses, Arthur is to be found here: small scrabbled patches of the beautifully useless. Green islands along the edges, filled with flowers that would poison, bushes that would not bear fruit. Things that were grown for the sake of it alone, plants which had no purpose other than to please. Done in his own time the colony leaders could not argue with him doing so.
Gabriel had a feeling that even if they did, Arthur wouldn’t listen.
‘We learnt about Earth at school.’ Arthur adds, returning to his work. He stretches his arms into the heart of the branches and continues to prune, ‘My planet isn’t all that far away in the grand scheme of the Diaspora. But I didn’t want to go truly until I was fifteen.’
‘What happened then?’
Arthur looks embarrassed. He touches the outdated e-tab he always keeps by his side, hung in a sling at his waist. ‘My home city sphere was quite large, enough so for a botanical garden. It was my first time seeing anything like this outside of a tab.’
‘Must have been nice.’
‘It was unlike anything I’d ever seen.’
Gabriel understands. Everyone on the colony does.
He shuts his eyes and breaths in deep and slow. The clouds and the leaves above create a sea of moving shadows across the inside of his eyelids, quick flashes of red like small fish. As the warm wind ruffles his hair, the start of his first ever real summer, Gabriel presses his back against the tree and lets his imagination go.
There's a lot of annoyance and negativitu going around the community and towards the game and dev choices (some of it deserved, some of it not) so how about something positive? The introduction of the grapple grenade is the BEST thing they've ever done, IMO. I can't count how many times having it has saved me from getting blasted off the map or into a wall at terminal velocity, and it really helps make up for some of my bad depth perception if I can course-correct midair using it. It's useful in PvE combat, too, of course, but I refuse to play any other class now because the sheer utility of it as a movement aid is so amazing, I love it so much its my absolute favorite thing. They really went well above and beyond with how it functions!
Agreed! It's such a nice addition to the game and super fun to use. Strand in general has been an absolute blast to me, incredibly well made subclass. I love Strand and especially Strand on Neomuna with the extra options to swing around. Neomuna is such a pretty location and I love just wandering around through it.
I also love all of the quality of life changes and streamlining of systems like everything with mods. Also personally one of my favourite changes to the game was removing the pinnacle grind. Great choice and they're continuing with it next season too so I'm super happy that I won't have to grind pinnacles every week on all characters if I want to enjoy playing stuff I want, when I want.
Looking forward to the changes to the cosmetics stuff with the option to favourite shaders and emotes. I'm genuinely so excited for this simple change and so many others that they've done and that they're going to introduce in the future. Feel free to share what else everyone enjoys!
The Curse of Oenone (Leo Valdez xFem!Oc)
A/N: We're having loads of fun this week -Danny Words: 2,148 Series' Masterlist Previous Chapter // Next Chapter Listen to: 'Champion' -by Fall Out Boy
Tumblr media
XXII: The Nonsense Has Escalated
She refuses to be who Helen was, the cause of countless demises while hiding behind fortified barriers. That's not who Ara Jackson is. She's the solution, not the problem.
Ara's looking at Piper's dagger for directions, and it shows her the outside of what seems to be an old workshop. The blade obliges to her requests easily, almost like it recognizes its original owner. It takes her no time to find a motorcycle and she takes it. If the owner's lucky, she won't even damage it beyond repair.
Ara drives through the city following her compass, it guides her effortlessly because there is only one thing she wants right now and that's finding Nico. Eventually, she locates the old workshop. Ara walks up to the entrance and breaks in.
It takes her just a couple of minutes to get to the bottom, which of course is way bigger than it looks on the outside. Ara is overwhelmed by all the cages and machinery surrounding her.
"...this spectacle will be even better," one of the giant twins is saying. "The Romans always wanted bread and circuses—food and entertainment! As we destroy their city, I will offer them both. Behold, a sample!"
Percy talks, which sends a wave of relief through Ara's body. "Wonder bread?"
"Magnificent, isn't it? You can keep that loaf. I plan on distributing millions to the people of Rome as I obliterate them."
"Wonder bread is good," the other twin says. "Though the Romans should dance for it."
Ara comes out right behind the giants, and Percy's the first to spot her. There is a split second of recognition on his face before he looks back at the giants and resumes his conversation.
"Maybe you should bring our other friends here. You know, spectacular deaths... the more the merrier, right?"
Ara looks down at the giant's feet—if she can even call them that—and sees Nico lying there. She notices the terrible shape he's in, almost pure bones and skin, way too similar to the old mummy they used to keep in the Big House's attic. Seeing him like this brings her no satisfaction.
They won't kill these guys without a god present, but at least she can get Nico out, and that would take away the leverage the giants have on them, and they might have a chance to run. Ara holds Almighty, still as a compass, and waits.
"Hmm... No. It's really too late to change the choreography. But never fear. The circuses will be marvelous! Ah... not the modern sort of circus, mind you. That would require clowns, and I hate clowns."
"Everyone hates clowns," his brother points out. "Even other clowns hate clowns."
"Exactly. But we have much better entertainment planned! The three of you will die in agony, up above, where all the gods and mortals can watch. But that's just the opening ceremony! In the old days, games went on for days or weeks. Our spectacle—the destruction of Rome—will go on for one full month until Gaea awakens."
"Wait," Jason intervenes. "One month, and Gaea wakes up?"
"Yes, yes. Something about August First being the best date to destroy all humanity. Not important! In her infinite wisdom, the Earth Mother has agreed that Rome can be destroyed first, slowly and spectacularly. It's only fitting!"
"So... You're Gaea's warm-up act," Percy continues.
"This is no warm-up, demigod! We'll release wild animals and monsters into the streets. Our special effects department will produce fires and earthquakes. Sinkholes and volcanoes will appear randomly out of nowhere! Ghosts will run rampant."
"The ghost thing won't work—Our focus groups say it won't pull ratings."
"Doubters! This hypogeum can make anything work!"
One of the twins moves to a control board providing Ara with a blind spot. She sneaks in closer, making sure the other twin isn't looking. Piper and Jason see her then, so they do their best to keep the giants's focus on them. Ara seizes Nico's jacket and almost whimpers at how easily she can drag him back, he's too malnourished.
Percy's relief is written all over his face and he turns to the others. "I'm getting tired of this guy's shirt."
"Combat time?" Piper seizes her cornucopia.
"I hate Wonder bread," Jason grumbles.
Ara tries to make Nico come back to his senses. "C'mon Ghost King..." she rummages through her bag and pulls out her bottle of nectar. She tilts the boy's face up and feeds him. "Now's not the time to take your title seriously!"
Nico's eyes open though it takes them a moment to focus. Once he sees it's her, his expression turns into a scowl. "You."
"Happy to see you too," she whispers. "Can you stand?"
Nico tries to get up and slips, so Ara places his arm around her shoulders and carries him to safety. "You'll hide until it's safe to go, got it?"
Nico's reply is a weak grumble, he must be extremely weak if he's not trying to fight her orders. Ara's about to leave when she hears growling, she looks back and finds two leopards slowly approaching.
She shields Nico's body with her own. "Piper, we could use some help here!"
The girl looks back and sees the felines. "Going!"
Her sister runs in their direction and points the cornucopia to the opposite side, a large piece of warm roasted meat flies off and distracts the leopards successfully.
"I miss Seymour," Ara sighs.
"Go help Jason and Percy, I'll watch after Nico."
"Take this," Ara gives her Katroptis back. "Works just as good as that horn you carry."
Piper takes the weapon and keeps feeding Nico small pieces of ambrosia so he can get back on his feet. Ara joins the fight. "Sorry I'm late, Hedge and I were having a great time talking shit about you."
Jason snorts. "Sorry to spoil the fun."
"Don't worry about it," she turns Almighty into a sword. "This will be fun too."
"Hydra! Hydra!" Percy shouts, running towards them.
"Where did that come from?" Ara yelps.
"I set it free!"
"WHAT?"
"The fireworks!"
Ara knows what he's trying to tell her and together they reach the device.
"Can you—"
"Yes, just make sure it comes to us!" She interrupts him.
Percy gets the Hydra to approach and Ara blows it up with the fireworks, it causes such a mess that they end up blowing up more than expected. They bury one of the twins under rubble.
Ara winces. "That's exactly why I'm not allowed to use explosives..."
Percy frowns. "You design bombs."
"That's different."
"Guys, the controls!" Jason shouts.
"Go, I got your back!" Percy tells her.
Ara runs over and looks at the buttons and levers, but they're not labeled in a way she can understand, she elbows Percy. "Takes too long, just break it!"
Percy cuts the whole thing in half, and a shower of sparks comes out of it. The twin still standing reaches them and Ara stands in front of Percy, turning her sword into a shield and stopping the giant's spear from impaling them.
Jason rushes over after checking up on Piper and Nico. The three of them stand together, but there's not much they can do. The other giant crawls out from under the debris and picks up his weapon, Ara turns Almighty back into a sword.
"What now?"
"We won't give up," Jason states out loud so the giants hear. "We'll cut you into pieces like Jupiter did to Saturn."
"That's right," Percy adds heatedly. "You're both dead. I don't care if we have a god on our side or not."
"Well, that's a shame. I'd hate to think I made a special trip for nothing." There, descending on a small platform, is Baccus. Mr D's Roman version. "Really, Ephialtes, killing demigods is one thing. But using leopards for your spectacle? That's over the line."
"This—this is impossible. D-D—"
"It's Bacchus, actually, my old friend. And of course it's possible. Someone told me there was a party going on."
"You—you gods are doomed! Be gone, in the name of Gaea!"
"Hmm..." The god walks forward staring at everything with disdain. "Tacky. Cheap. Boring. And this... Tacky, cheap, and boring. Honestly, Ephialtes. You have no sense of style."
"STYLE? I have mountains of style. I define style. I—I—"
"My brother oozes style!"
"Thank you!"
"Have you two gotten shorter?" Baccus squints at the pair.
"Oh, that's low. I'm quite tall enough to destroy you, Bacchus! You gods, always hiding behind your mortal heroes, trusting the fate of Olympus to the likes of these."
"Lord Bacchus," Jason shifts his weight from one foot to the other. "Are we going to kill these giants or what?"
"Well, I certainly hope so. Please, carry on."
"Didn't you come here to help?" Percy asks.
"Oh, I appreciated the sacrifice at sea. A whole ship full of Diet Coke. Very nice. Although I would've preferred Diet Pepsi."
"And six million in gold and jewels," Percy grumbles.
"Yes, although with demigod parties of five or more the gratuity is included, so that wasn't necessary."
"What?"
"Never mind, At any rate, you got my attention. I'm here. Now I need to see if you're worthy of my help. Go ahead. Battle. If I'm impressed, I'll jump in for the grand finale."
"That's great," Ara's voice is full of sarcasm. "Please do tell us what kind of grand finale you wish to see."
"Ah, good question... Perhaps you need inspiration! The stage hasn't been properly set. You call this a spectacle, Ephialtes? Let me show you how it's done."
They get taken to the center stage of the Colosseum. Ara hadn't been paying attention as she drove around the city, but she does remember seeing this place near the workshop she'd snuck into.
The floor is fixed, and the bleachers too. There is a roof over them to make it comfortable for the people in attendance. There is a box right in the best spot where Baccus, Piper, and Nico are seated, ready to watch the show.
"Next time, Birdy, keep your mouth shut," Percy mutters.
"I'd take the advice if it came from anyone else, but since it's you, I can't take it seriously."
"This is a proper show!" Bacchus speaks from his box, sounding like he's got a microphone on him.
"You're just going to sit there?" Percy demands.
"The demigod is right!" Ephialtes screams. "Fight us yourself, coward! Um, without the demigods."
"Juno says she's assembled a worthy crew of demigods," Baccus smirks. "Show me. Entertain me, heroes of Olympus. Give me a reason to do more. Being a god has its privileges."
The girl locks her eyes with Percy and manages a mocking smile. "Well, if we survive this, I promise to listen more often."
Percy doesn't smile. "Yeah, right."
"Let's get this over with," Jason stands ready.
The giants grab mountains of plaster and toss them over. They jump into the same trench.
"I'll take Otis again!" Jason shouts. "Or do you want him this time?"
"Which one is Otis?" Ara asks keeping her head down.
"No, no—We attack together," Percy replies. "Otis first, because he's weaker. Take him out quickly and move to Ephialtes. Bronze and gold together—maybe that'll keep them from re-forming a little longer."
"Why not?" Jason manages his own very ironic grin. "But Ephialtes isn't going to stand there and wait while we kill his brother. Unless—"
"Good wind today," Percy points out. "And there're some water pipes running under the arena."
They look at Ara, she sighs and turns Almighty into a bow. "Yeah, fine. My weapon is gold and bronze anyway, I count for two of you."
Jason laughs and Percy grins, it's the first smile he's shown her this entire day, and it does cheer her up a little bit.
"On three?" Jason offers.
"Why wait?" Percy responds.
They run out driven by mad frustration. Percy makes the water pipes explode and Jason tosses Ephialtes backwards giving Ara enough time to get to him.
"Hey, Otis!" Percy screams. "The Nutcracker bites!"
Ara gets to where Ephialtes is and aims an arrow at him. "Hello, cutie! We haven't been properly introduced!"
"Ara Jackson!" He shrieks, struggling to get out from the pool of wet plaster and debris.
"Not the first time I've got giants screaming my name—always an ego booster," Ara shoots and the arrow lands on the giant's left eye. She turns Almighty back into a sword. "I'm such a shitty archer..."
"Argh!" Ephialtes tries to get up, but his snake foot seems to be stuck on something.
"I was pointing at your nostril," she continues while dodging his attacks. "I've learned most monsters have weird soft spots, so the crazier you aim for the more effective it is—like this!"
She cuts the foot that's stuck and Ephialtes shrieks with rage. Her skin glows teal and she opens her palm over the running water making it move faster, not allowing Ephialtes's foot to reform. The giant uses both hands and tries to smack her on the head with his spear. Ara ducks and rolls, she doesn't look at what Jason and Percy are doing, they'll let her know when it's time to retreat.
"You may have ruined my spectacle, but Gaea will still destroy your world!" Ephialtes screeches.
"If it happens, you won't be here to see it."
On queue, the large shadow of the Argo II makes itself present above their heads, and Ara lets out a chortle of relief.
So About Fazbear's Fright
Someone found a corpse in the Freddy Fazbear horror attraction
lets talk about it?
⚠️Content Warning for descriptions of blood, gore, death and mentions of child death/murder⚠️
I'm sure everyone who's seen the news recently knows what Fazbear's Fright is but just in case; Fazbear's Fright is a walkthrough horror attraction based on Freddy Fazbear's Pizza (think a haunted house but based off a cheap pizza arcade with animal robots)
Fazbear's Fright take it's inspiration from the 5 Missing Children of Feddy Fazbear's original location and the tragedy that took place in it's second location when an animatronic attacked a security guard and removed a piece of his brain.
(Wether or not this is appropriate or in good taste is for you to decide and not the point of this post)
Anyway
Fazbear's Fright opened last week to a mediocre reception. (for reasons listed above).
They have one (1) functioning animatronic
The SpringBonnie suit, a specialized suit that allows use as a wearable costume and an animatronic robot. These suits were discontinued soon after their introduction when the mechanisms holding the animatronic pieces back failed; severely injuring the suit's wearer. These suits are incredibly rare and it's insane that Fazbear Frights was able to get their hands on one of them as intact as it is.
I'm a massive fan of the Freddy Fazbear franchise. All tragic accidents and missing children aside, the characters are charming and the pizza is surprisingly not awful. I (of course) visited Fazbear's Fright the week it opened (click here to see my full, innocent, review of the place; it was surprisingly good ignoring the content of this post).
Anyway, SpringBonnie is by far the star attraction, you get to see it at the very end of the haunted maze and they really played this thing up; you get a full 360 view of it and while it doesn't move they've managed to make it feel like its watching you the whole way through the room. (they also pump some awful stench into the air so you can really tell that this thing has been sitting somewhere rotting for who knows how long)
The week after I visited, someone crossed that tape border they have circling the animatronic, and made a shocking discovery.
The SpringBonnie animatronic appeared to have human teeth hiding behind its animatronic smile.
Why would SpringBonnie have human teeth? No one was meant to see him this close, and, trust me, Fazbear's Fright doesn't have the budget to waste on details that will never be seen.
An investigation was launched after the photos were released and everyone went "hey! those are a little too realistic!"
So that's how they found a corpse inside the SpringBonnie animatronic.
But, the most interesting part, the part no one is talking about, is not what was in the suit, but who was inside the suit.
William Afton
Some of you may be too young to know who that is, allow me to introduce you
William Afton founded Fazbear Entertainment alongside co-founder Henry Emily. In the early days of the pizzeria, William and Henry would both wear the springlock suits; SpringBonnie and Fredbear respectively. It's a lesser known fact that William Afton was actually the victim of the springlock accident that saw the springlock suits that cause them to be discontinued (he survived but the few pictures of him showing bare arms show severe scarring that appears to extend beyond his sleeves and possibly to his chest)
Now, remember the missing children from earlier this post? What I failed to mention about them was they caught the guy behind the kidnappings.
It was William Afton
William Afton, wearing the SpringBonnie suit, took 5 children into the back room of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, an off camera location known only to the employees, and no one ever saw them again.
William was caught on the cameras outside of the break room, but he was never convicted because who could prove that it was William in the suit and not Henry or any other Fazbear Entertainment employee who had the training to handle the suits properly. Regardless no one believed William's innocence and he was forced to take a backseat in the company
Or so we thought anyway; William dropped off the face of the earth really, everyone assumed he'd gone into hiding to wait out the media storm that comes from being accused of kidnapping and possibly murdering 5 children from your own pizza restaurant.
Well.
We found him.
       ares wasn’t crazy. he wasn’t a suspicious lover, he didn’t lack trust or spend his days worrying what his boyfriend was doing. not like that. it was one thing to track his every move and wonder who he was hanging out with — which he wasn’t! his thoughts were innocent, even if he was currently looking at his boyfriends location.
       which … yeah, he turned the location on himself. weeks ago. before he left. days before he left, considering he had to take the chance when he had it. he didn’t want to get caught! that would have been so embarrassing.
       which! ares would be turning it back off, and telling seunggi all about it once this was all said and done. it wasn’t a secret, it was just a necessary evil, or something. it had to be done so he didn’t have to ask too many questions. what’re you doing today? any events coming up? how’s work, baby? all perfectly normal questions, sure, but what if seunggi started asking why ares was asking? he was just paranoid over nothing, is all.
       but for now he needed it, okay? he needed to make sure the other man was in the city, but not home. it was … hard to set up, really. if anything ares was just putting a lot of faith into hope, here. simply hoping that it would line up and work out.
       the good thing? it wouldn’t matter if it didn’t work, you know? well — if seunggi didn’t come home at all then that would suck. but that wasn’t going to happen. ares was going to will it into existence. manifest it, if you will. and if it didn’t work out he’d just sleep in his own bed for a day or two, and leave his boyfriend a cute note before he left.
       but maybe … maybe ares was manhandling his faith a little, forcing it into place — he was doing his best to make this happen. they might only have a weekend before ares left again, after all, and he planned on making the most of every single second.
       which meant calling in help in the form of his sister, bless her. not only did she pick him up but she already had everything ares needed. nyx went above and beyond, even, considering she was helping him carry stuff in. though maybe she had ulterior motives, too, if the way she started looking around said anything — not that ares blamed her. the man he was dating was probably … a little shocking. or he’d think as much if it was new news. she didn’t seem shocked at all, even went as far as laughing. of course she knew! didn’t everyone?
       her words, not his.
       words that ares was huffing under his breath as he finally ushered her out of the apartment, some may call it shooing.
       and then? then ares was getting down to business, so to speak.
       music? on. tv? on. lights? down — or most of them, the kitchen was still bright as could be. it had to be, he was trying to melt chocolate and peel an orange. all of which came to an abrupt stop as the front door opened. he was looking up from where he was dipping one of those very orange slices into chocolate, his quiet humming getting caught in his throat as he saw him.
       “seunggi —”
       sure, ares was the odd thing out right now. he shouldn’t be here! he should be halfway across the world right now, doing his thing. but still, his eyes were widening a little in surprise.
       “i thought i had at least an hour —“ god, his fingers were chocolate coated and he didn’t even have time to play romantic music. he didn’t even get the flowers out of their bag! he didn’t even get the movie ready! he didn’t even —
       “ — surprise, baby.” despite the fact that ares felt like he just got caught with his pants around his ankles (he was fully dressed, thank you) he was still all smiles. how could he not be? na seunggi, live and in person. of course he was going to smile. it was like a surprise for him, as if the other man coming home unexpectedly was the same thing as ares being here, too. surprises all around!
The Lost City (2022)
Uhm,, I’m gonna be as fair to this movie as I can because I’m not into CORNY rom coms. I do like them but the ones that take themselves a little too seriously even though they’re just as much a romcom as any other. anywho, just saw this today and I’ll give it this. it was an entirely new trope. Like trying to impress someone isn’t new but in this movie channing tatum is literally going to rescue her out a jungle to prove himself to her. So there’s that.
I feel like this movie didn’t feel real. Like there were parts of it that were actually trying to follow a little bit of the romcom seriousness and it just didn’t stick. Because so much of it was silly. Also, Loretta (Sandra Bullock’s character) was just so unkind to Dash/Alan (Channing Tatum) that I have no idea how he maintained a crush on her. Like granted, Loretta is a widow and I think her husband of 5 years passed and she’d fully planned to spend the rest of her life with this man. It’d be one thing if she just wasn’t interested in anyone at all, but that does not seem to be the case. Alan follows her around like a golden retriever™️ guy and likes her since the very beginning of the movie. And he is a slight himbo but she’s constantly putting him down and not letting him get a word out before insinuating he doesn’t have the braincells to hold a conversation with her.
She’s a little too into her own intelligence and needs to give people a chance. Like she fully uses big words when they aren’t needed, not because they flow seamlessly into her talking. Like maybe some but it feels like a lot of them are just to inflate her own ego for knowing these words at all and that other people around her don’t. And I’ve always thought there’s no fun in making yourself inaccessible to speak to. The smartest people can articulate themselves with common vernacular and engage in fulfilling discussions with everyone. Like don’t be that way.
Also, Daniel Radcliffe was a very interesting villain choice. Yeah, just interesting. And I get he’s the villain but does he really have to be in a 3 piece suit at all times in a tropical climate? And I don’t like that we scratch the surface of talking about spanish colonialism but then just don’t. Very odd, like they’re teasing you with it. Will they or won’t they? lol. They dip their toe in the water about it and go “eh :) no, i don’t think we will”.
Loretta honestly never really redeems herself from being as mean as she is to Alan. And the hot take: Her publisher is the best character in the movie. She carried the movie, and went above and beyond. and the casting seemed like an AI generator came up with it and then also found a random location.
Rating: 4.5/10
(I love rom coms, just not this one. there were a few decent wise cracks though.)
Forgive me for asking, I don’t know if these questions have been answered before, but why did the Petrosapians exterminate the Galvan, and why did the Kees have Earth blockaded?
No need to apologize! These questions were answered during Changing of the Guard, but I'm always happy to talk shop. If you or anyone reading this would like anything else about the Kryptonverse clarified or expanded upon, my ask box is always open!
The main reason the Petrosapiens exterminated the Galvan race is that the Galvans experimented on and uplifted their species, making them much more powerful and durable than they originally were, at the expense of removing their ability to die. Simply put, most Petrosapiens went mad as they eventually realized that they'd be around forever, doomed to eternity as everyone else died around them. Of course, by destroying the Galvan, the Petrosapiens further doomed themselves, as no one else knew how to undo their immortality.
As for the Kree blockade, it's a bit more complicated, as there's several factors at play. The most important one is that the ancient Kree experimented on a variety of primitive species, humanity included, in order to create powerful slave warriors they could toss at their enemies without risking Kree lives. On Earth, this resulted in the creation of Inhumans, though their creations quickly broke free of their control and the project was scuttled. Much later on, as the galaxy reached some form of tenuous peace and civility, the Kree were forced to look back at some of the atrocities they committed, most of which remained state secrets; the creation of Inhumans was one such embarrassment, and the modern Kree sought to hide their past misdeeds by laying claim to the Sol system and setting up an Exclusion Zone around it (which basically just means it's off-limits to everyone but personnel strictly approved by the Kree Empire). This involved setting up a network of observation devices and station throughout the solar system, and as a last line of "defense", the blockade in orbit above Earth.
Beyond this, there is also Earth's unique circumstances, of interest to the Kree Empire; Earth is technically the property of the Great Diamond Authority, but even if the Kree never respected that claim, the fact remains that even partially completed and abandoned, the Gem Empire could potentially reclaim it and thus have a presence on the opposite side of their current battlelines against the Kree, forcing the Kree to fight on multiple fronts at once.
In a similar vein, Earth is stuck in the middle of the "southern" edges of Kree and Nova territory (there's no cardinal directions in space, but y'know, the agreed galactic "south" when the Milky Way is viewed from a top down perspective). While the Nova and Kree are technically at peace, no one really expects it to last very long, which could potentially lead Earth to become a valuable strategic location if hostilities start back up again.
Side note, Captain Marvel obviously wasn't too enthused about the establishment of the blockade, but SWORD convinced her that the Accuser in charge was sympathetic to humanity, and that having a heavily armed fleet protecting the planet was worth some performative subservience to the Kree Empire until they were able to defend themselves. She's not happy about it, and she's made it clear that she won't hold back against any other Kree targets warranting her intervention, but she's kept her word, same as Hala.
The Merry Whump of May - Medi Whump May – Day 24
@themerrywhumpofmay: “Bent out of shape.” - Dragged - Wrong place, wrong time.
@mediwhumpmay: “We've got you. You're safe.”
Unconsciousness, blood, broken bones, helplessness, desperation, vomiting
Follow-up: Days 21 - 23
Tonya had made it up the steep slope again. She wasn't as fine, as she had stated to be, when Sam asked. But to her advantage, she didn't lose consciousness and dropped like a log as he did. Still she had covered a great distance on her arms and knees desperately trying to hold onto something before she almost went after him over the cliffs.
Her butt hurt and by now her right leg was near to useless. Climbing up that cliff didn't help. The last few hundred yards she was desperately holding onto the radio, repeating her mantra for help and just dragged her leg with her. It was getting darker by the minute.
Finally that damn static was interrupted by a voice. Her breath hitched, a sob of relief out of her deepest core.
Not even 2 minutes and her relief turned into pure anger. She was exhausted but hearing that there wouldn't be any help till sunrise, let her emotions go haywire. She was so angry tears fell unhindered. Tonya had kept it together this whole time, had risen above herself in an unimaginable situation and now there was no one coming for them.
Her outburst faded into nothingness and she just started crying. Not this kind of cry out of pain or anger but a total mental breakdown. She was hardly getting any air in, in her uninterrupted pleas for help. Sam didn't had till morning.
The calm voice reassuring her, that a chopper would be there by first light, but disembarking in the dark of night in a narrow canyon was just near to impossible. He assured her, that exactly while they were speaking a team was tying their laces to get to her, but it was dark and dangerous for everyone. She absolutely needed to stay put. There was only space for one patient in that chopper, he joked. In any other situation, she might have even smiled to that.
He would be checking in on her in no time, but she needed to stay where she was, to be able to stay in contact and guide the team to Sam's location.
She had no intentions to stay up here while Sam was probably dying down there, all alone. But the last adrenaline rush from her outburst had finally and ultimately subsided. Just 5 minutes, then she could go on. Tonya was laying down by now, her head slowly dropped onto her arms. "Just 5 minutes." She whispered to herself.
#
It was pitch black night, when Sam's eyes opened the next time. Yet, he wasn't really sure he actually opened them. A few stars in the sky finally convinced him. He was so cold. Everything hurt.
He was not only cold, but shivering by now. Just realising the uncontrolled movements going through his extremities, letting little and big sources of pain inflame again and again. He was so exhausted. 'Where did his body got all this energy from to shiver like hell?' He would have liked to have some of this energy, so he didn't need to be just laying here, waiting for his end. The inside of his mouth tasted like sewer, thick, sickening syrup-like sewer. He could have died for a sip of water, but probably he would. Even lifting that bottle to his mouth was just too far from his imagination.
'If some animals would come to start nibbling on him, when he was beyond saving? Would his cadaver be dragged somewhere? Maybe into some hole to feet a pack of wolfs or a bunch of rodents?
Yeah, no, maybe he could think of more fun stuff to occupy his mind with on the brink of death.'
Sam just knew, he wouldn't make it. His demise in the middle of nowhere felt so damn real. He couldn't knot the string connecting the name Sam to himself, but he just knew, he hadn't had much time left.
His breathing was too shallow, his skin was too cold, his body was too broken and just too weak. There wasn't anything he could do to prevent the inevitable. It was just a matter of time.
After being the black sheep of the family, being the whipping boy to his stepfather, finding a new life after child service, he occasionally thought, he could manage everything. But this was an unforeseeable obstacle, he certainly wasn't prepared for. Just like so often, being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Story of his life, it seemed.
He was trying to accept his fate, but it was hard. He wasn't ready to give in, despite his body telling him too. It was so damn cold. But he was still breathing. That was the one brick to built on... 'Don't you dare die on me, Sammy!' An all so tiny smile hushed over his face.
Maybe some time the sun would come up. Than he had at least fought the night against all odds. He could hold on to that thought.
#
It wasn't one of many attempts to reach her by radio but the hand gently touching her shoulder that woke her.
Tonya felt like she had run a marathon, twice. Every cut and bruise burning, her right leg throbbing and she was cold.
3 lights moving like insects in the dark sky. The rescue team, they were here! She rose abruptly, full awake by now. "Tonya?"
The location was pinpointed, more help on the way, but they were fighting against windmills trying to convince her to shuffle back to the car about 2 miles with one of them.
A team of two already made their way down, keeping radio contact and occasiol intervisibility with their headlights. The remaining man patched up her leg, some cuts and a laceration on her head, she hadn't even noticed. A jacket 3 times too big helped against the cold.
Her leg was hurting, trying to slow her down, but a brief thought about the pain Sam must be in, kept her going. She kind of hoped, that he actually was still feeling pain, that he actually still was...
#
Yes, Sam was still feeling or more enduring. He was in and out of it through unbearable painful hours of darkness.
But then the sun really did come up after all. Wind, or maybe even a hurricane pushing through the ravine. Some life after all.
A spark of relief went through him. His breathes still so straining. His eyes just closed by the imaginal force watching him.
Sam managed a weak chuckle, when he realised that he was actually just losing his mind. He was never a religious person, never had been, even before that cruel fuck was regularly stating that Sam's punishment was just him being the executing hand for the wrath of God.
There was no reason to start having faith now. That would just be hypocrisy, right?
The sun was rising. At least his last view was a nice one. 'Was there anything he should be regretting or be angry or sad about? Wasn't that, what you're supposed to do, when you're dying?' He was just too weak to think about something like this right now, he decided.
And then, there it was. It wasn't the weather pushing the wind through the dried floodway, it was a damn chopper just passing.
And by all means, it surely must have been the strong wind from the rotors pushing out a single tear from the corner of his eye.
Only a heartbeat or maybe a blink passed. The next time he opened his glazy eyes a crack someone was above him, moving his mouth, but he didn't hear the soothing words anymore. "We've got you."
Updating my life!
It’s been a minute since I’ve wrote. A lot has happened in my life since I wrote the last post regarding my ventures, it’s been a crazy ride lemme tell you, but I wouldn’t have changed  anything about these past few years if I could. All and all it’s taught me who I need to become and not who I want to become.
God/ Spirit has stepped into my life in many many ways over the last few years to simply get my attention. It’s best to be described as boom, boom, boom and then bang lol. It’s basically been pretty much the tower in the tarot. Anything that hasn’t been built on a solid foundation has been wiped clean, it’s like a big flash of lightning comes down from the sky and cracks me open straight down the middle of my core being. This happened to allow for fresh starts to begin and ultimately major for major healing of my whole self.
Change is hard to grasp sometimes as it’s different for everyone, but the main reason these tower moments keep happening is because a lot of us tend run and seek shelter in all the wrong places, with all the wrong people, etc.. the more we run from the inevitable or God/ Spirit the more he steps in and slams the breaks on, the more he’ll continue to put blocks in place such as the boom, boom, boom, bang moments it’s quite scary actually considering how powerful he really is. He is way stronger than any of us so here’s a bit of advice from this girl - listen the first time and stop trying to dodge the bullet so to speak it’ll be much easier in the long run.
There’s been many changes that have occurred and if I had listened the first time maybe I wouldn’t have had to have gone through so much emotionally, mentally and physically, but sitting here really thinking about it I probably wouldn’t have changed it in anyway because it all shaped me into who I am today at this moment in time.
The challenges aren’t meant to destroy you, they are however meant to show you how strong you really are when push comes to shove, when the path is dark and frightening never give up, that’s where you’ll find your strength to preserve forward and find out just who God/ Spirit really is. He has the ability to pull anyone from the ashes, but we all have to give him permission to, he does not just do it - we have to help him do so in all ways.
As many of you know I chose to put my horse down the end of September 2022, it was time. He was 26. I spent fifteen wonderful years with Chance and he lent me his wings for so long, he carried me through the fire of hell many times. It was time to give him back his wings because I had discovered I’d grown my own over the years. He’s still carrying me even though it’s no longer in the physical form I can feel him spiritually everyday lifting me up - as a reminder to never give up. Our journey together will never really have an end.
In the morning of July 14, 2022 I had saddled him up for the last time, but I didn’t know that at the time. I went to mount and as soon as my butt hit the saddle I had the worst pain ever imaginable surge through my whole body, still to this day I don’t know how I managed to ever dismount and get back to the barn to make a call for help. It must’ve been God carrying me. Everything seemed to be getting better up until the middle of October of 2022, I was walking right up until the 31st which happened to be Halloween. A week or so later I was finding it very hard to walk, I was practically crawling. Mama took me to hospital two times and they didn’t do much at all, they gave me pills and sent me home. I was forced to get myself a wheelchair to make it easier to manoeuvre around this house. I was sent for a series of tests.The MRI results showed what was going on, I have a whole bunch of “little” things going on, but the biggest problem of all is a herniated disk which is beyond severe, it’s located right above my butt crack, it’s cutting off nerves in my back which is causing me to not be able to use my legs as I once did. It’s like they are rubber noodles. I am waiting to see a surgeon in the city, hopefully that will happen soon so I can get my feet fully underneath me once again. I am stuck taking many medications for the time being which makes me feel like s*** if I am being honest here lol.
The series of events that I’ve been through just in the last year had really made me question God in a lot of ways, but sitting here right now writing this for all of you who will read this in the future I am going to call it “divine intervention” in a multitude of ways. It’s as if I wasn’t listening, I wanted change and I asked for it, I even screamed to God daily saying, “something has to give!” I knew something had to give, but I didn’t expect to have to put my horse down or my cat Oliver “Fat Meow” down in such a short time. I knew there was more going on then meets the eye with both of them, my intuition told me so.
Towers come into our lives to bring change, sometimes everything crashes and burns to the ground, but that’s so we can all start over in whatever way is fitting for each and everyone of you. All of our situations are different. My eyes are more open than they’ve ever been before my perspectives have changed on a lot of things in a few short months. In a few short days it seems I have gone from feeling sorry for myself to embracing this obstacle and I’m seeing it in a new light. It has changed my way of life. I have gone from being independent to having to rely on others to help me. This has forced me to ask for help, this has really shown me in my circle of friends, family members, who’s really got my back when I am in the dark. I’ve seen the light and the dark, but I am choosing the light from now on and what no longer serves me is being let go of it is being removed, God’s stepped in so I am able to find that sense of peace and fulfilment that I deserve.
I hope that everyone at some point can see the good in the bad, it’s always there, sometimes it’s found in the darkness in which many of us are scared to walk through. At some point you’ll be forced to do so, you’ll be forced to have a real good look at yourself and you won’t be able to run away from what you’ve always ran from. God steps into our lives in many ways, God has the reins, he’s  steering the ship and going forward we’ll have no control what so ever. Accept that! Go with the flow you’ll be so glad that you did. It’s way easier trust me. You’ll find your light in the pitch black I promise you. I am not saying everything is going to be easy from here on out, but if you can just be patient, wait it out and do what God/ Spirit is asking you to do right now. You’ll discover vital information, this includes everything from coping mechanisms for overcoming anything that will be placed in front of you as an obstacle, etc..
There are rewards for those who never give up! You’ve got this! You’ll be okay! Remain strong my friends, keep fighting - find your strength that has been buried by the Devil for so long. It’ll be found in the rubble (the darkness).Darkness will not go where there’s light! Remember that!
Yours truly,
