Pokemon Card of the Day #2889: Mr. Mime-GX (Celestial Storm)

Mr. Mime-GX was an update to one of the Mr. Mime ex in FireRed & LeafGreen. The gimmick here was that Mr. Mime-GX was immune to damage from attacks that did even amounts of damage multiplied by 10 (at 260 or lower, at least; not an issue in almost any game in this era but worth noting for anyone playing Expanded). The other side? A 2 Prize Pokemon that didn't have a lot of bulk, and was therefore extremely vulnerable to anything that could hit odd numbers (multiplied by 10, as you might expect). This was not something you could rely on to build around. You could potentially use this as a tech in a deck if you had a problem with certain opponents, which would be the aim when trying to find a use for the Pokemon.

150 HP was quite poor for a Basic Pokemon-GX. You were in easy Pikachu & Zekrom-GX range, and even Zoroark-GX was able to get there with a full Bench and a Choice Band. The lack of Weakness and Resistance was to prevent manipulating of damage, as a Weakness would just make everything an even number from a type by default and would work like an immunity in a lot of cases. The Retreat Cost was 2, though it was pretty rare that Mr. Mime-GX would both want to retreat and would survive an attack in the turn waiting to do so.

Magic Evens was the Ability that gave Mr. Mime-GX some hope. If damage done to Mr. Mime-GX was of any multiple of 20 (20, 40, 60... up to 260, where it cut off), that damage was prevented. In theory, this would block half of major attackers. This was not the case against any deck running Choice Band, which was both available and widely used in both the BKT-On and SUM-On formats. The 30 extra damage let the opponent basically choose whether to hit on an even or odd damage number, leaving Mr. Mime-GX only usable in the UPR-On format, where you could try to use it as a wall against certain opponents in control decks.

Breakdown put a damage counter on the opponent's Active Pokemon for each card in their hand for the cost of a Psychic and a Colorless Energy. This wouldn't always be a lot but could be useful to chip away at the opponent if they couldn't do much.

Life Trick GX healed all damage from Mr. Mime-GX for a Colorless Energy. The low HP really lowered the chances to use this, and the GX attack was sometimes wanted elsewhere (usually Articuno-GX in these sorts of decks).

Mr. Mime-GX was pretty rare to see. It was a UPR-On format only sort of card. It was run over by Pikachu & Zekrom-GX and most, but not all, Mewtwo & Mew-GX decks, and Eternatus VMAX and Blacephalon usually handled it rather well. It was, surprisingly, a pretty cool way to deal with Zacian V after Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX used its GX attack, as all the main damage sources of the deck suddenly went from odd to even numbers. That was really the niche here, and if you wanted a way to wall that, hiding Mr. Mime-GX until that GX attack had been used was a pretty good idea. It saw one top finish in a stall deck, getting a single copy in the 2nd place deck on Pokemon Online's championship in the pandemic of 2020. Yes, it was Sander Wojcik again. Outside of that, it was best worth skipping on.

My friend asked me why I have three versions of the same Pokemon game (Pearl, Platinum, and Brilliant Diamond), so i went on an unhinged ADHD rant. Realized I could post it here, so I edited it into a coherent paragraph. Let me know if I got anything wrong! I'm not an expert at all just a pokemon fan. TL;DR availible at the end. Explanation below the cut:

Ok so pokemon games! They usually come out in pairs, excluding gen 1 and probably some others. Like how Diamond and Pearl are both basically the same game and released at the same time. Two or three years later (usually before the next gen releases), they release a "sequel," for lack of a better term. Often it's one game. For example, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl became Pokemon Platinum. Sometimes they're direct sequels though, like Sun and Moon turning into Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon or Black and White turning into Black 2 and White 2.

Gamefreak also remakes their old Pokemon games. They remade Red and Green into FireRed and LeafGreen. Ruby and Sapphire got the same treatment, becoming Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. They usually come with graphics improvements among other tweaks, and are released on newer console than the originals; Red and Green were for the Gameboy, FireRed and LeafGreen were for the Gameboy Advance. The remakes for those two came out about eight years later. Diamond and Pearl were made for the DS, but Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (their remakes) were for the Switch. Those remakes came out about 15 years later than the original games, releasing in 2022.

The biggest difference between pokemon game pairs is usually the main legendary pokemon. Ex. in Pearl, the Team Galactic captured Palkia. In Diamond, they capture Dialga. That means Palkia is only able to be caught in Pokemon Pearl and Dialga is only in Diamond. There's lesser differences in catchable pokemon between the game pairs too. In the Grand Underground while playing the Pearl version, you can find Armor Fossils while digging. They can be restored in the Oreburgh Museum to get the pokemon Shieldon. In Diamond, you instead find Skull Fossils that can be restored into Cranidos. There are also other pokemon that can be caught in Pearl and not Diamond, and vice versa. Besides Dialga/Palkia/Giritina though, you can see every single Sinnoh pokemon in all versions of the gen4 games and unlock the national pokedex. I think there's also Kanto pokemon that can only be found in one version or the other of the game when you unlock the international pokedex? Not totally sure on that one.

Platinum, Pearl and Diamond's "sequel," changes the end of the story altogether, with the distortion world and all (haven't made it to that point in the game yet 😅). Giritina is the main legendary pokemon in it that the villain captures. You can also obtain Palkia and Dialga after defeating the Elite Four. Despite calling it a sequel, Pokemon Platinum isn't all that different from the other two Sinnoh region games besides the distortion world. A few of the gyms are different, the post-game Battle Park becomes the Battle Frontier, some of the graphics are better (?), there's two new islands (Full Moon and New Moon Island) where Cressilia and Darkrai can be found, and the progression of the gyms is a bit different. It may seem like a lot, but in the grand scheme of things it's the same game as the other two.

TL;DR: Pokemon games come out in pairs that are almost identical, but not quite. Certain pokemon are only availible in one version or the other. They also usually have one sequel game or a pair of sequel games. Generations 1-4 have all had remakes throughout the years, like Gold and Silver for the Gameboy Color becoming Heartgold and Soulsilver for the DS. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are the most recent remakes, coming out for the Switch even though the originals released for the DS.

Well now I can say I have played gens six and seven, but I haven't finished them yet so I'm just gonna post down what I like abt em so far hahah

Red/Blue/Yellow - honestly... I just liked that Pikachu can follow us on Yellow, wish they kept that feature all throughout each games, it only came back on HGSS, SwSh, BDSP, and ScVi. Also the fact I can get all three starters hahah

Starting from gen one

Crystal - Kris supremacy, the highlight of it really, also really dope we can visit another region post game

TCG for the GBC - it's fun, made me understand the card game a bit better back then hahah

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald - HOENN SUPREMACY ough this is home in game form fr, this and BW/BW2, but more on this really hahaha it's cool the contests are cool actually, love the starters, they're the first starter trio where I liked all of them, love the characters, I love my son Wally so much, May/Brendan too, Wallace the true Hoenn Champion in my heart (Emerald bias), the best roster of mons, I could go on really

FireRed/LeafGreen - I mean.. idk. It's an improved version of gen one I'll tell you that but yeah

Platinum - Torterra, Garchomp, Riolu, and the contests (yes I liked the contests here too, the contests here low-key better than in gen 3 ngl)

HeartGold - love the pkmn following feature for real, it's so cute, it's dope, wish they added that in gen five hcnxnx

PMD Red/Blue Rescue Team - Red Rescue Team was my intro to pmd, fucked me up so much I had to use the HP cheat lmfaoooo but it's fun tho hahaha

PMD Explorers of Sky - changed me as a person, really dope, the characters are cool, I just hated Chatot at the start lmfao, but dude this game is so fuckin dope pls cndmdn the way Hero and Partner are so soft and I love how they're still together even post game they mean so much to me your honour🥹

Red/Blue/Yellow - it's boring as hell. I don't like the fans of this one too, most just couldn't accept that people like the newer gens and they always shit on people if they don't like gen one

Crystal - other than not being able to get Mareep, nothing much, they do have a point w the level scaling tho

TCG for GBC - I mean tbf I understand why it's not mentioned much there's not much to it but it's still fun for killing time

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald - how back breaking it was finding Feebas I honestly gave up, also what the fuck was that Regis mission man💀

FireRed/LeafGreen - same w RBY

Platinum - it wasn't a fun experience for me, it's slow as shit, and I'm pretty fucking sure majority of the people who like this game only likes Cynthia. Fr, no hate on Cynthia, she's a dope character, but she's like the Charizard of the pkmn characs really, she gets everything and is everywhere, how abt giving a chance to other Champions

HeartGold - a bit slow, but not DPPt slow at least, also again w the level scaling

PMD Red/Blue Rescue Team - this would've been so so dope if it weren't for the fact that after the story, Hero and Partner became nothing but normal recruits. Like all that buildup of Hero wanting to stay for Partner, and suddenly they're just like normal recruits, it sucks

PMD Explorers of Sky - Aegis Cave

White - idk but for me it's hard to level up in this game, also the fact the E4 didn't do much on screen, like I wanna know what they did during Plasma's attack

Black 2 - it's,, well it's how the previous characters interacted really, I wish there was more of it, I wanted to see the Gym Leaders interact w each other during the games, pls I wanted to see Bianca and Iris meeting at Castelia bc I know they met up there again please I just know it

Conquest - I think it's a skill issue on my bit but the gameplay was just so confusing for this one, and no I don't mean the battle gameplay, that I got, more on the,, recruiting bit and using of items and everything else—

X - I can't say it's easy just yet bc I really haven't made much progress so hey, for now I'm gonna say at how fucking long it takes when you get an item like dude why does it take so fucking long💀 also the lack of Diantha scenes, she deserves more, honestly she deserves so much better

Ultra Sun - have not finished this so no solid judgement but for now Imma say it's how tedious it is levelling up your mons and idk if it's a skill issue on my bit but like,,, do they really give off such a small amount of exp?? Idk, granted, my pkmn was a bit over levelled hahah

Unite - the abysmal matchmaking, the fact that ftp players don't have a way to get gems even if it's through events or missions, the devs thinking gem locking pkmn was a grand fucking idea, the way they can't balance their mons some are just too squishy and some are still strong despite the nerfs, also have I mentioned the matchmaking? Dude fr standard is either full of bots or I get matched w players who don't even know the objectives even if I'm telling them where to gather chxmxn

TCG online/live - live was honestly so so shit and a lot of players agree like even the cards aren't balanced Jesus Christ also it's lag as shit you can't even do anything most of the time and suddenly you lose also fun fact this game almost broke my fucking phone I almost couldn't exit the game and I had to forcefully reset my phone to save it lmfao

Masters EX - I haven't played this much yet for a solid judgement too but damn is the download time for this is slow as shit and fucking crashed on my tab. Also the lack of Diantha lore, pls they should add more abt Diantha she deserves it

Cafe Remix - idk ig it's the fact I'm broke and can't afford stuff in this game bc almost everything needs real money to get, I really thought this was an offline game at first hahah
