Credit to @gloriousbritain : This the magnificent Saltburn Cliff Lift. It was built in 1884 to stop people clambering down the steep cliff to get to the pier and is one of the world's oldest water-balanced funiculars. Before the cliff lift there was a rudimentary vertical hoist system in place but once this beauty arrived tourism in the area boomed. The original wooden carts have been replaced with aluminium carriages but otherwise the cliff lift are as built all those years ago!
