While we're still on the subject on Timothy shifting focus to LS, I kinda remember seeing people complaining/mentioning that OG fans have been asking for a baseball episode but LS got them first instead. Not to mention LS's gay wedding proposal using a few notable elements of Buddie's legal guardian reveal. Not to mention LS having Bi rep first when people have been asking for Bi!Buck or Bi!Eddie, regardless of the can of worms I just opened.

I really don't want to be that person with "the grass is greener on the other side" mindset and I'm afraid you answering this will start a discourse on your back, but doesn't it feel like Timothy takes either what works on OG or what OG fans want and applies them on LS instead to boost the latter while keeping OG... what it is?

(I'm not worried about the discourse. People get mad very easily when they misinterpret the meaning behind a post and don't ask for clarification.)

Yes to the baseball episode! The Eddie fans in particular have been pushing for it due to Ryan's love of the game/his role in Everybody Wants Some!!, but LS got it because...idk. It looked "cuter" for Carlos to root against his own people for TK? It was an opportunity to revisit Owen's anger issues? The proposal scene...boy. What makes it extra hard to digest is that Tim worked with Bob Goodman (as in, his name is in the credits) the same way he admittedly worked with Kristen to create the hospital scene. It's pretty easy to see, in my opinion, how Tim took something from a year ago and went "What would that scene have sounded like if they were actually together?" and applied it to the canon gay couple. If Buddie were canon when that convo took place, it wouldn't have *just* been about Christopher. It would have been about Eddie not wanting to waste another moment without Buck now that he came close for a second time (just like the Tarlos proposal happened after TK & Owen talked about living in the moment because "that's all any of us have").

The sudden bi rep...you gotta laugh, almost. OG fandom is so caught up in its own feelings that not having a canonically bi Buck or Eddie meant Tim was allergic to bisexuality. Except...no, He's not. He just didn't want to make either of THOSE characters bi. He (yet again) took something from OG and found a way to make it juuuust a bit different. OG has lesbians. LS has bi and trans rep. "A little something for everyone", as they say. There's also the way that a concerted effort is made to keep Grace and Judd connected despite their schedules, whereas OG fandom has to make excuses like "It makes sense that Madney can go more than one episode without interaction when they work different hours." Judd...literally drove to the dispatch center to check on his pregnant wife. Grace...talks to her husband while he's trying to perform a rescue. Even Sierra previously said that she believed Tim knew better than to have Judd MIA for Charlie's birth 'cause he'd get grief from the fans, but OG fan base's opinion was irrelevant when deciding to write Chimney out with no explanation? That's how it is now? Following the 911verse has basically become a game of "If you don't like the way OG did something, just wait to see it end up on LS." Maybe being too predictable is a bad thing in this case considering LS can't keep up ratings-wise. But don't fret! The Big Gay Wedding that fans actually get to enjoy will help. 🤪 (In all seriousness, I do hope the numbers are good that week, but the effort given to Tarlos vs. the long established lesbian couple in 5x18...what exactly was I supposed to be praising Kristen for? Not making the blink-and-you-miss-it ceremony about a couple of hets?)

You and Eddie don’t fight that often to be honest - but when you do, it’s bad

It’s easy for you both to get het up and lost in the heat of the argument. I just want to make it clear that the argument is never physical, he’s never laid a hand on you, Eddie wouldn’t do that and you’re never scared he will, but you both tend to say things and snap if you’re arguing

Usually it’s resolved less than half an hour later, you both hate being mad at each other, especially Eddie, and once you’ve both cooled down a little then you’re able to talk like grown ups

Until this one argument

Maybe you made a remark out of concern about him getting caught or hurt for his Riddler work and the argument spiralled from there, maybe you didn’t mean for it to come across rude or disrespectful, maybe he didn’t mean to be so snarky… point is, the two of you end up in a big verbal fight

Except it keeps getting worse and worse, you’re frustrated that he doesn’t see why you’re so worried, and he’s frustrated because you of all people know his work is important, why are you suddenly making a huge deal out of nothing???

Without thinking, you scream that he’s “pathetic, a fucking pathetic nobody freak” - and immediately you know you’ve crossed the line

The way his face falls when you say that, the way the fight leaves him as he slumps, his eyes hurt by your betraying words… immediately all the fight leaves you too

“Eddie, I didn’t mean-”

He walks out of the room and leaves the apartment without a word

You know you’ve fucked up - big time. You know that Eddie has been tormented all of his life by people who’ve said the exact same things as you just did, that what you’ve said has hurt him more than a punch or slap would have - and you feel so awful, so angry at yourself, for hurting him

Eddie comes back an hour later, he wouldn’t leave you for very long even if you hurt him, though he’s convinced himself that you’ve probably packed your stuff and left, that you want nothing to do with him - so he’s admittedly surprised when he enters the bedroom and sees you waiting for him anxiously

“Eddie, I’m so sorry,” you whisper, close to tears. “I didn’t mean it, I swear…”

He sits uncertainly on the side of the bed, but you can tell that he doesn’t believe you, his shoulders are still slumped with defeat, and he’s refusing to meet your eyes - he can’t. He’s scared that if he looks at you, he’ll see hatred for him in your eyes, that you despise him

You try again, apologizing and putting a hand on his arm - and that’s when you see him break

He hates himself for crying in front of you but he can’t help it - he wants to believe you so bad, wants to believe that you didn’t mean it, but he just thinks that of course you hate him, of course you think he’s pathetic, why would you, the most incredible person he’s known, be any different? Why would you like him? It’s brought up a lot of insecurities

“I didn’t mean it,” you keep saying, wrapping your arms around him, and he can’t stop himself from crying into your shirt. “I didn’t, Eddie - you’re the most brilliant person I know.”

It takes a lot of comfort/reassurance to convince him that you truly didn’t mean it, that it couldn’t be any further from the truth: you tell him you’re so proud of him for the work he’s doing to improve Gotham once and for all, that you’ve never met anyone as intelligent and clever as him, that you love him so much

Eventually he starts to believe you, starts to believe that you didn’t mean it - but it’ll take a while for him to forget the memory of you saying that to him, forget how it felt when you called him what you did 😔 he accepts that you didn’t mean it, but he’s so self deprecating that you saying those things hammered it all home and brought back bad memories

No matter how heated things get in an argument after this, you don’t cross that line ever again - you care about him too much to want to hurt him, even if you’re fighting

ARC Review: Infamous by Lex Croucher

3/5. Releases 3/21/2023.

For when you're vibing with... childhood friends to lovers (sans separation), "kissing for practice", good old-fashioned lesbianism, and maybe a bit of what we all probably want to happen with Eloise Bridgerton, but like.... it actually happens here.

Edith "Eddie" Miller has always had her best friend Rose Li to fall back on, and vice versa. They even rely on each other for kissing practice. How convenient! But when Rose announces her intentions to marry, Eddie is left bereft and alone--until the famous poet Nash Nicholson invites her to visit his estate. Like Nash, Eddie is a writer, and she figures that getting Rose out of her head is just what she needs to perfect her novel. But Rose isn't so easy to shake, and Nash's invitation might be a lot more complicated than it initially appeared.

What an interesting book! I think that for some people, it's going to be exactly what they need in a sapphic historical romance. For me, I'm not so sure--but I appreciate what it is, and I liked it as my first Lex Croucher read.

Quick Takes:

--When I tell you Eddie gives big "if Eloise Bridgerton was allowed to be the sapphic girl her TV version clearly wants to be" vibes--I mean it. She's not quite "not like other girls", but there are some borderline moments. I will admit that one thing that took away from the novel as a romance for me is that it is really a singular POV book. I prefer--with some notable exceptions!--my romances, especially non-contemporaries, to have a dual POV. It doesn't have to be equal, but I want to hear from both love interests. Here, Eddie was squarely the protagonist, and while we saw a lot of Rose, we never got into her head. This sucked, both because I honestly liked Rose more (Eddie is definitely meant to be Complex, but aside from that I just found Rose's complexity to be more compelling and unexpected) and because it just felt more like a story in which Rose was the side character versus an equal protagonist.

--But again, I really like Rose. I don't want to give away her aim in this novel, but it was a refreshingly forthright take on a sapphic historical romance. I went into this book really expecting Rose to be one thing, and she totally zigged where I was thinking she'd zag. I just wanted more for her.

--The villain is very transparently obvious, and though I'm not against a clear villain theory... This was so! Clear! That it did feel a bit more YA than adult. I actually had to double check the ages--but yes, the women are twenty-two, so this is squarely not YA.

--The entire setting of the gothic estate was great, and it led to a lot of moments where people stumbled in on secret meetings, clandestine kisses were had, and so on. It felt very Northanger Abbey, and in a lot of ways the entire novel very much seemed like a tribute to Austen, which I loved.

--The ending had some elements I loved (especially in regards to the romance) but one thing that did bug me a lot, and while I get why the choice was made... I don't know if I can get over it.

The Sex Stuff:

There is passionate kissing and light touching, but the book is very tame. Sex happens, but we don't "see" it. I found this rather disappointing, to be honest. I feel that a lot of sapphic historical romance is much lighter on the sex that het historical romance, and it's not my favorite thing.

Overall, I think that Infamous ran a bit young for me, and while it was quirkily pleasing, it didn't quite go as far as it could have gone. It's good, but it could've been great. I would, however, recommend it to YA readers who'd like to dip their toes into adult romance. It works really well as a bridge in that sense.

A concept: Buck Knows™️

The lingering glances, Eddie's reluctance with Ana. It's why he pushes, though he tries not to push too hard. He knows the shit Eddie's been through, is going through, his tried and tested "loads more people have it worse," and "I can't afford to break down," and "move forward, forward, forward, always." The trouble is with moving forward sometimes you don't look where you're going, and Buck—Buck's been there. So yeah, he knows. Just like he knows that sometimes all it takes to look down, to take stock of yourself, to really figure out where and who you want to be, is someone else showing you how.

He breaks up with Taylor. He tells the 118 the next night over dinner, and Chim whistles, says something like, "tough break, kid. Plenty more fish in the sea."

Hen's rolling her eyes. "Women aren't fish."

"Neither are men." Everyone's looking at Buck. He looks at everyone but Eddie. "Um, I'm bi?" And there's a moment of silence, then laughter and smiles all round, and "thanks for telling us," (Hen) and "oh so the firefighter calendar was more than just the ego stroke?" (Chim and, well, he's not wrong)

Only now does Buck look at Eddie, and smile. He gets one in return.

When their shift ends Buck takes his time and so does Eddie and then it's just the two of them. "That was, um, brave. At dinner," Eddie says. Buck shrugs.

"I guess. It mostly felt like a relief."

"You weren't... scared? How we would take it?" And Eddie is holding his hoodie between his hands, stilled in the act of getting changed.

"No." Buck shuts his locker. "Because you're my family. I knew they'd love me no matter what." He nudges Eddie's elbow with his own, spurs him into action, watching as he pulls the hoodie over his head. "I knew you would," he finishes softly when Eddie’s poked his head out and his hair's sleepy and dishevelled. He's looking at Buck like he never wants to look away.

But Buck can't take that step for him.

He has to want to do it himself.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Eddie." And he's smiling, the whole drive home.

Riddler, in general is het'nt. Nothing against het Riddler, het folks or het Headcanons and shipping. This ask made me snort coffee milk out my nose in Starbucks so I'm going to answer it in the joking spirit it was intended

BOTTOM OF THE PILE, CONFIRMED HET, IS GOTHAM RIDDLER. Which is very unfortunate BC he dresses like this and has murdered several women . net loss for the hets imho . I would give him a point back for style but that's not the game we're playing. 0/10(Side note, Cory Michael Smyth 10/10.)

Next up, probably het but we can't know for sure is Telltale riddler. I can't tell you why but he does have very straight vibes. When I ask women what Riddler they want to fuck, 99% of the time it's this one. 2/10

Next is Arkham riddler. Now. I cannon him as bi or bi/ace. However rocksteady are cowards so that's not happening. Arkham Riddler is straight(against my wishes and common sense), but literally no one in gotham believes him. 3.5/10

Hush Riddler. I canon this one is very in the closet. I have a hard time not seeing most riddlers as bi and tbh this one is no exception. Arkham Riddler is afraid of men, he prefers a feminine partner but Hush Riddler isn't fussed, as long as they give him all their attention 24/7. Man's a solid 5/10 on the hetnot scale

1. Fave au for buddie

My fav AU changes by the week, but a few favorites that will always pickle my cucumbers are: arranged marriage, royalty AU (especially if one is royal and one is not), ABO, shapeshifter, anything bodice-ripper style, and last but not least: although these aren't usually my preferred AUs this fandom delivers hardcore with some incredible works in the white house AU and singer au (Looking at you, whoever wrote that first one and @princessfbi you inspirational motherfuckers <3)

2. Fave fanfic trope for them

As far as tropes, ANYTHING AT ALL that is buddipher/ Buckley-Diaz family related makes me melt like butter in the summer sun, just a big ol' puddle, reaching shaky hands for the reblog button. Also anything hurt/comfort, whump, and fluff is really doing it for me. I'm also not averse to some kink (MAKE THAT A LOT OF KINK HOLY SHIT DID I FALL DOWN THAT RABBIT HOLE AS SOON AS I DISCOVERED IT ), any fic of Everyone Sees It But Them, and I think some salty folk might come after me for this but I prefer (continued under the cut to save your dash)

As I was saying, I prefer Top!Eddie and Bottom!Buck fics, it's just nice to see the physically bigger guy get taken care of every once in a while, since that's far more rare, that's my take. This isn't exclusive, mind you, but I read it in their interactions as their main dynamic. I also see it in the way they've so far interacted with their various het!partners: Eddie loves to take control and Buck loves when his partner takes control. (And those who are screaming that this is a heteronormative way of looking at buddie are simply incorrect--in every relationship, no matter the gender of the partners or how many partners, the partners choose the dynamic that works for them, always subject to change of course, and if the partners choose to switch back and forth all day every day or have a more fluid dynamic that is valid. And if they choose for one partner to be "more dominant" (in whatever form that takes) and one partner to be "more submissive" (in whatever form that takes) that is valid too. Accept no shame, take no prisoners <3)

Side note re: my fav tropes, you can spot my favs in my reblog habits: all fanart and most other fanworks get likes (I like a robust fandom with lots of loving support and open discussion, even if it isn't all my cup of tea) unless I SERIOUSLY disagree or dislike but shit that matches my tropes, butters my bread and ketchups my burgers, gets reblogs sometimes multiple reblogs--I believe in making the change I want to see in the world, and this is the tiny way I work to make it happen.

(I do make an exception though for artists (of all kinds of art--drawn, written, HCs, incorrect quotes, literally anything) who I think are sliding under the radar. Even If their works aren't 100% in my ball park I'll give a reblog so that they can be noticed by the fans who want exactly what they have to offer and otherwise might not find them)

Hmmmmm personal headcanons..... Bobby is Buck's adoptive dad, I have believed that ever since he committed to raising Buck all the way in episode one, showing some of that discipline and not letting him get away with bullshit, but I was sold hook line and sinker when he was helping Buck get ready for his date, helping him with his bowtie that was POETIC CINEMA and I really hope they give us that moment again when Buck is getting ready to marry Eddie #ISaidWhatISaid

What else... nothing much else comes up at the moment, but ask again when the brain is less offline (or more online, whichever) and I ought to be able to scratch up more <3

4. If you could decided the next 'big event' what would you do, what kind of plots would you wanna see in it?

This one is SO HARD!! Like Tim said (yes, I also can't believe I am quoting the man, he is the devil but also he knows how to run a damn good show, smh) the amount of ideas for big events in LA is running low, HOWEVER having said that, I would love if there was an episode where the 118 was visiting Hawaii or something and had to deal with a live volcano or down in Florida dealing with a hurricane--the coping mechanisms would be two-fold: dealing with the disaster at hand as well as dealing with being in unfamiliar territory and I'd love to see them make it work and save lives, etc.

i like taylor as a character but i’m honestly so over her as a love interest.  partly because of buck, but also partly because of just... her?  her personality?  her everything?

with buck it’s like.... i haven’t really watched enough of season 1 and my memory is shit anyway but i can’t remember any times besides taylor when buck was straight up rejected.  (oh except veronica, but that was less rejection and more like mutual abhorrence)  like yeah abby left and ali broke up with him, but those were both after relationships, you know?  we’ve never really seen him, like... not get what he was looking for when it came to women.  he got sex when he asked for it, and he got relationships when he tried and put in the effort.  EXCEPT when it it came to taylor. 

which is like... i just think it’s kind of weird and a little annoying that the direction the script took was “yeah you got rejected but she’ll come around, don’t worry.”  like the writers are TRYING to have taylor have a buck 1.0 -> 2.0 arc (i mean they even called her buckette back when she was introduced??) but it’s honestly not working for me and i feel like it has to do with integrity, kind of.  like in order to get taylor and buck together, they were kind of forced to soften her, or at least make her SEEM softer, and it’s just... yeah, not working.

because honestly, when you get down to it, taylor is a cutting edge.  and buck is a bleeding heart.  and forcing them together was kind of... never really a good idea.  and i feel like she KNEW this.  she DID.  but the kiss came out of nowhere and the two of them got pushed together in a rushed bid for... idk, views??  do het kisses get views?  unclear, honestly.  i just really feel like if they kept going with the natural progression of their friendship we could have had a LOT of fun.  like could you imagine the power her character could have if she was just buck’s a-little-too-intense-about-her-job reporter friend who just pops in once in a while to spice up a storyline or unwind with buck?  they get wine drunk in his apartment and have a whirlwind complaining sesh and he tries to come on to her exactly once and she just shuts it down in a way that reminds him that the rejection really truly isn’t about him and that’s a GOOD thing, because he’s so kind at heart and she knows she’s not, she knows she’s ruthless when it comes to finding the truth, and she liked the sex but she honestly just doesn’t want a relationship like that just yet.  like... the mutual understanding of “she needs someone who can remind her that the world can be good and soft” and “he needs someone who can cut through the bullshit” but they don’t need these things ALL the time, just special occasions, you know?

also not to be a lone star weirdo on main BUT one of the things i loved about season 1 lone star (that they got rid of in s2 and i honestly believe had a greater impact on why s2 didn’t meet my expectations than a lot of other small details ANYWAY MOVING ON) was carlos and michelle’s friendship.  it was a nice way to bridge some of the gaps, and also to give carlos and michelle both a little bit of peace and support, away from the chaos of everything else.  and yes, we get this with buck and eddie drinking beer in the kitchen or whatever, but there’s something about that flavor of “i have a friend who ISN’T involved in every single thing i’m involved in” that makes it very refreshing. 

it would be SO NICE to get taylor’s honest opinions on workplace drama or whatever, to see her dissect it all in that way she has, but to have nothing of import really riding on that opinion.  like... right now buck doesn’t seem to trust her at all, but imagine if he did?  like imagine them sitting on buck’s couch slightly tipsy and he’s like man i want to tell you something but you gotta promise you won’t use it and so they create a wine-drinking-friend pact where he could tell her absolutely ANYTHING and she would have to keep it to herself because that’s what friends do, right?  and so he tells her about chim and maddie and all of it.  and she straight up tells him that keeping secrets fucking SUCKS and reminds him that maddie and his parents kept a secret from him for like thirty years (actually wait where was taylor during the buck begins arc???  i can’t remember??) and that maybe he should just rip the bandaid off and tell the truth.  like... her line about finding truth or whatever later in s5 would have honestly been more impactful in an instance like this i feel, with buck trying to be a good brother and a good friend by keeping this secret and she gets so passionate and stands up against it, and maybe buck takes her advice or maybe he doesn’t but at least he’s not in a goddamn echo chamber in his own head, right? 

and honestly, this is my final point here but i would LOVE to see the dynamic of buck approaching something from his own perspective, and then getting whiplash from taylor’s COMPLETELY DIFFERENT perspective... and then there’s eddie, who follows up after taylor leaves, this man who knows buck SO well and SO completely that he can help him reach the middle ground between how buck first reacted and how taylor would have done it that would honestly have been the best direction to go from the start, like--

Lol I know nothing about that firefighter show except seeing gifs on your blog and I legit thought that one of those two guys died last week, it was so shocking... I don't know where I'm going with this I guess I wanted to confirm that he's alive? and are there like, legit legit prospects for them to be together?

Eddie is alive!!! After he woke up, he immediately asked for Buck and then they facetimed Eddie's son together (yeah I know). Also Eddie then revealed to Buck that last year he had changed his will to make Buck legal guardian of Christopher if anything ever happens to Eddie (yeah I KNOW). Prospects on them being together........hard to say. They both have girlfriends. Buck JUST got with his during that same episode (bc you know...they have to balance out the gayness with some het action). But Eddie has been shown to be having doubts about his gf when he was told to follow HIS heart, not his son's (YEAH I KNOW). Their relationship with each other completely eclipses any gfs they've had. I still think it could happen bc if you watch their scenes together, the way Buck reacts when Eddie is shot, the way Eddie looks at him, the way they're very clearly paralleled with Bobby and Athena (a married couple) in the episode...I just...my god. If this is queerbaiting, it's is like....egregious johnlock level of queerbaiting (will always be bitter about that hihi).

I made a post somewhere about it but basically I was pissed at the choices they made in the finale of what to include or not include.

They said they filmed enough for two episodes and it showed in the editing. They included unnecessary stuff like Albert passing his test (could've made that a whole thing in season five) and bypassing Eddie's trauma and recovery by showing him healed, and wasted precious minutes shoving Buck and Taylor together when she'd made it clear multiple times in previous episodes she just wanted to be friends. I was really excited for their platonic friendship, both for them individually as characters but also because I want more man/woman friendships (Chim and Hen, yes, but Hen is a lesbian, I mean we need to show more people who COULD be attracted to each other in regards to sexuality but AREN'T because if I hear the "you can't be friends with people of genders you're attracted to" one more time, or deal with one more man acting like he has to sleep with all of his women friends at least once, I'm going to set this entire country on fire and toast marshmallows while you all burn to death on my pyre). I also was shocked they didn't have Eddie breakup with Ana after they had the buildup for it in the previous episode. They shot Eddie and then had him barely in the episode. It was all about Buck. And I loved what they had with Buck and the aftermath and Christopher! The guardianship, I swoon! But to do that and THEN have Eddie apparently home and okay, and then show him recovered and okay in Albert's test... like wow thought Eddie was a main character, Tim. Thought he was important to the cast, Tim. But no let's make his traumatic event all about the precious uwu white boy fave, shall we Tim? MEET ME IN THE FUCKING PARKING LOT, TIM.

Anyway. As I've also stated other places, I'm in a bad living situation and have been for the past year, during a pandemic, so my mental health has been in the toilet (forget the toilet it's been in the sewers) so that contributed to my extremely bad reaction to the finale. I can't really handle a lot right now. So as I've said - maybe things will change for me and I will be willing to watch the next season.

But to be honest? And I know this sounds awful. But if Buck and Eddie don't become a couple I have no interest in the show. I know others have different opinions and they are valid! I don't usually watch a show just for the ship, but Buddie is what got me into this show and if they aren't endgame then I don't have a reason to watch it. I love the other characters but dramas like this are Not My Thing and it's just not enough to make me stay. I know I sound like a Twitter stan throwing a fit, and I don't mean to sound that way. But I truly, as a writer, do not see any satisfying path for Buck or Eddie except to be together as a romantic couple, and anything else would do their journeys and relationship a disservice. So when the finale didn't even show Eddie breaking up with Ana and shoved Buck with Taylor, it kind of dashed my hopes (hopes I have not held in YEARS regarding queer ships) and made me not want to keep watching.

So there you are. My reasons for not wanting to watch. Bad finale choices, stupid het romances, I want canon slowburn queer ships.

Now that it’s the first time they’re both single since S3, do you think they’ll keep it this way in S6? Or they’ll try to keep at least one of them occupied with a het relationship AGAIN? I’m not talking about specifics like L*ucy or anyone, I’m more intrigued to know where they would take Eddie’s love life next season. Would they bring in a LI to try again now that he’s doing better mental health wise?

I don't see Eddie getting a new LI anytime soon because if Ana checked off all the boxes (except for that ableist attitude they wanted us to forget about) and he still found a reason to break up with her, the next woman would likely get the TayKay treatment where we can SEE that she's not the answer, either (instead of relying on "hints" from the text). It wouldn't be a matter of "if" they break up, but when. And, more simply, I don't think the show would bother to reintroduce another woman to Christopher only to take her away, too. I actually think that Buddie will start out in the same place re: learning to exist without feeling like they need a woman to "fix everything". Eddie convinced himself that Christopher was struggling without a mother figure in his life, but in reality, Christopher just didn't want to lose the adults he already had. A happier Eddie is going to bring out the happiness in Christopher (because when his dad is sad, he is sad) and Eddie will come to realize that's all his son ever needed.

Dylan is a Mary Sue

*look I know that the symbiote has a name and Venom is both it and Eddie. So I hope you don’t get annoyed when I refer to the symbiote as Venom because writing symbiote 100 times gets annoying and I hope you get what I mean when I call it that.

I’ve been trying to write this like nine times because I don’t want to bash this character. When I wrote the post about how I didn’t want Dylan Brock near Miles, I intentionally left out the reason why because I like the character. I hate the purpose and narrative mind behind him. And plus I don’t want to seem like I bash white cis het male characters when the characters I do trash on are bad because writers tend to make them intentionally bratty. I don’t like Spider-kid, Damian Wayne when written without consequence(he is white passing), Jason Todd,or Alpha. Like giving a character a shitty attitude doesn’t make him endearing especially on a male, I’m sorry. Characters like Tim Drake, Alex Power, and Dick Grayson work because there is something genuine in them that they want to be the good of the world.

Anyways, Dylan is fun to me because he has this precocious roguishness that isn’t malevolent nor out of place. His abuse is actually abuse that isn’t made to serve as his training or whatever nor does it warps his views. And his fandom in Eddie/Venom actually makes sense because he is a kid that was abandoned by his mother and left with an emotionally and physically abusive man who would cut him down. A dark passenger like Venom appeals to him because Venom is like the codifier of misguided anger for misguided teens.

But there is a reason why he is written that way: he is a Mary-Sue. Now I don’t care about the gender preconceptions of Mary Sue vs Gary Stu nor do I try to prescribe to reclaiming Mary Sue in some vain attempt at liberal feminism. Mary Sue is bad writing unless everyone gets to play(Mary Sues work in video games). Mary Sue is something writers in most mediums that tell stories should avoid if they want said character to succeed or evoke if you want said character to be disliked. And Dylan Brock is an example that doesn’t work and is largely getting away with it because he is cute.

1. The Immaculate Conception of Dylan Brock

This is when I knew some Sue shit was unleashed on Venom fans. I don’t have to google it but I can guess that Cates has a Catholic background. Whether he is one or raised one, it is apparent in whatever meaningful writing depth he provides outside of meaningless action. And it works because Eddie Brock, being anti-Peter Parker, is Catholic. Hence the brooding and self-loathing and abusive paternity and motifs of redemption and suffering and shit. But this was not only fucked up, but a little too on the nose.

Dylan wasn’t conceived naturally. In fact, Anne Weying was raped by the symbiote and impregnated with Eddie’s DNA. So Dylan is actually the child of the Venom and Eddie Brock. “But Anne is his mother.” Look, Cates didn’t actually consider Anne so I won’t either. Outside of the fact that it doesn’t make sense chronologically since Peter was like in his early 20s when he had the Symbiote and is at most 29 now, Anne is just a vehicle for Cates’ to necessitate the purity of Dylan Brock. Dylan is the pure child of Venom, born from the womb of Eddie’s first girlfriend/fiancé/wife/whatever and the first human woman to wear a symbiote, I think. I mean she didn’t even have sex with Eddie and boom, mini Eddie Brock is wrapped in cloth and left at the meager doorstep at the sacred house of Eddie. Praise Venom, y’all.

Jokes aside, I don’t know how Venom fans just didn’t go, “Iight, Imma head out” after reading this page. Just shows the conviction of fandom.

But I digress. Now let me regale you just how improbable this is which again only serves to ordain Dylan is the truest son of Venom in all the ways possible and also highlight the very unfortunate implications of this fuckery. Symbiotes bond is how they reproduce. When they reproduce with their host, the end result up to this point has always been a symbiote. For Mass Effect fans, it’s the Asari thing except with goo. Before you ask, yes Symbiotes sexually satisfy their hosts unlike the majority of human men*cough*. Point is that Dylan should be biologically impossible but somehow he is a human symbiote hybrid. And the unfortunate implications of such of incident shouldn’t go unnoticed either. Venom and Eddie have several children and prior to this, all of them have been symbiote. Cletus and Red also have children too and again symbiote. In fact, all symbiote bonds produce symbiotes as far as male hosts are concerned...except for the brief bond of Ann Weying and Venom Symbiote. Gee I wonder why she got a different result? Well there are a few female hosts and surprising none of them have spawned a symbiote child. So logically it can be assumed that woman + symbiote = forced impregnation of symbiote. Well this shit got dark. The symbiotes just became the Jeffrey Epstein alien species. But since Cates swears up and down that is not what is happening, he is going for the God/Virgin Mary angle for some reason.

It’s almost like he is the descendent of the Symbiote God. If only there was such a thing.

Welllllll shit.

2. Dylan is incorruptible and all-powerful without knowing why or how

Okay, backstory time because I never properly explained Knull, another of Cates shoddy creations. Knull is the galactic god emperor of the Symbiotes who created the Symbiotes as a weapon to rule the galaxy. Aside of the fact that his existence retconned the previous backstories of the symbiote, he has the ability to domesticate the symbiotes and make them subservient to him.

Guess who else has this ability.

Dylan is symbiote Jesus, hallelujah. This explains the Church of Carnage/Knull/Grendel/who gives a shit. He is the true son of Abraham and Carnage is the false prophet of Venom. It’s what Christianity considers Islam to be or some shit and both Dylan and Sleeper are about to nail the 95 thesis on the door of Carnage in the form of the greatest mixtape you ever heard.

Look, I too am astounded of the sentences my mind comes up with when I so thoroughly hate a writing like I hate Donnie Cates’ Venom.

Dylan goes beyond being just a special snowflake that was forcefully and crudely implemented. He is the pre-ordained established opposite of the nature of corruption that Knull created the symbiotes for. To Knull, the symbiotes are his thralls. To Dylan, the symbiotes are his pets. To Knull, the symbiotes are a tool to become omnipresent. To Dylan, the symbiotes are individuals who need to be liberated if good. To Knull, there is no such thing as a good symbiote. To Dylan, there is and it’s Venom or sleeper or what have you. Dylan is the forgotten son and the New Testament for symbiote kind.

And he doesn’t know yet.

Okay, this is a common Mary Sue trait to absolve culpability of a Mary Sue character. It’s to say that they are not to blame for being special. It’s like the writing form of don’t hate me because I’m beautiful except somehow more obnoxious. Dylan’s obliviousness to this what is essentially an entire alien species religious revelation is like trivialized because their prophet is a 12 year old. It’s like waiting for a savior only to be told he is a carpenter.

Imma let that last one just marinate for a minute.

Look, Cates did a lot of rewriting and retconning just for his self-insert to become his favorite series and hero to be the second coming. He created this lore for Venom only for his avatar to be the prophet. The intentionality of his obliviousness to how important this is just glazed over the fact like it isn’t a big deal. Just like Cates glazed over the whole rape and forced impregnation thing because somehow that doesn’t warrant a follow up.

3. Dylan Brock is fanboy Cates

Okay before I begin, self-inserts aren’t bad nor are they inherently Mary-Sues. Kong from Ultimate Spider-Man is Bendis’ self-insert. Boomerang from Amazing Spider-Man was rewritten to be Spencer’s self-insert. JJJ is a self insert for Stan fucking Lee like...self-inserts are great. To the degree that they aren’t unnatural to the narrative or overbearing.

Dylan Brock’s previously stated precociousness comes from the idea that Donnie is writing the inner teenager that he was as a kid reading Maximum Carnage for the first time. And I get it, man, live your truth and all. Like yeah, force and subjugate other fans of this series to your childlike inquiries like how Symbiotes poop, I mean it’s not like their fandom is important or anything.

First Dylan is a fanboy of Venom just like he is. And while that makes sense meta-wise, in-narrative it doesn’t because...okay Venom fans are about to tear me apart for this but it’s like someone being a fan of Ted Bundy. His heroics usually came with a body count is all I’m saying and I doubt it would be praised but then again Wolverine has an in-universe fandom so what do I know. Back on topic, Dylan’s fandom and praise of Venom to get him out of the dark place that is his father’s abusive household.

And this is why it’s so hard to hate him because of all the fucked up shit Cates put in this book, Dylan feels like the one character that is genuine and pure in that innocent kind of way. No one hates Dylan and how could you? We all get it. And it helps that Dylan has a completely different voice than every other Cates has written from every other character. Like I can hear the excitement in his voice when he pesters his hero for questions and I’m reading his words. The idolization is pure when he meets Normie, the god son of Spider-Man, and it creates this dynamic of Spider-Man fans vs Venom fans. It’s fun in a way.

But it’s just that. When Cates writes Eddie, he is not only writing to retell Cates own personal past demons but also in the lens of how he viewed Eddie as this tortured soul who just got the wrong interview from a copycat that costs his job. The second banana of a greater and more prominent hero. Born to the wrong person. That none of what happened to Eddie was his fault or really his doing even when he was at his worst wearing Venom, it was Venom who tempted him.

Dylan is that pre-teen who sees the best in everything Venom is: The dark avenger of the abused and neglected. And I don’t want to speculate whether Cates fits the category or not because that ain’t my business, I can see why Dylan would be a compelling self-insert if it weren’t compounded on top of Cates’ forceful insertion into Venom and subsequently Spider-Man lore.

Like you remember Carly Cooper? Dylan is exactly like Carly Cooper. And this is why I like to think of Cates’ run as the equivalent of One More Day. Cates’ retconned a crucial element of Venom to make Dylan necessary to the core of Venom. He retconned the one thing that made Venom and subsequently Eddie go beyond just being a twisted revenge story.

The erasure of Mary Brock, Eddie’s sister and Eddie’s cancer. One is the motivation and the sole good Eddie has ever known. It’s his motivation to move past is mistakes. And Cates then turns the one bond in the series into something...horrific.

Okay, Dylan replaced his sister and Venom itself. His being becomes Eddie’s motivation to be a better person rather the struggle to see himself as more than his upbringing. It’s like reading Spider-Man and finding out Uncle Ben was on crack. Uncle Ben didn’t die. He faked his death. Yeah, that is what this was. So he could evade taxes or some shit. This is exonerated Eddie in the worst way and turned him into a manipulated pawn of Venom. Let’s completely retcon the marriage of MJ and PeterVenom and Eddie, Cates pitches to editorial.

Dylan becomes more than just some kid who idolizes Eddie. He becomes the sole motivation of Eddie himself now. Eddie’s past is now completely erased or made irrelevant to uplift Dylan’s importance to Eddie. It’s too a point that the Symbiote kids of Venom aren’t Eddie’s kids anymore. It’s like Eddie was in an interracial relationship and the one non-brown baby with blue eyes is his one true kid and others are mulatto chocolate eugenic mishaps or some shit that his ass don’t want to deal with anymore. I mean disowning Carnage I understand but come on?

Cates’ self insert changed the entire nature of the series. And for what purpose? To give Venom a legacy just as Peter has one. And that is the problem with Dylan.

Steve & Danny & the dog park: a partial examination

Okay, so I’ve been trying to write McDanno fic for 10.04 and I’ve been failing because there is SO MUCH going on that I keep starting over in an attempt to zero in on The Most Important part, and I can’t decide what that is, so now I’m going to write a rambly post about the dog park scene instead.

Let’s take this pretty much line by line:

D: “Women, they love dogs. Right?” Yes, Danny. Yes, they do. You know who else loves dogs? You do. (Which is a fun fact Steve knew full well when he, a guy who has always vocally preferred cats, suddenly adopted a dog, which might be old news by now but does suddenly feel very relevant again.)

D, cont.: “They come over and they pet Eddie -” It’s fun to me that he’s saying “they” here, like that’s not exactly what he does. Random example: remember the start of 8.06? Danny shows up at Steve’s house as Steve is coming out of the water with Eddie after his swim, and Danny is trying to lure Steve inside for the Please Take Better Care Of Your Own Health intervention, but Steve doesn’t know that, and Danny pets Eddie and Steve makes Eddie shake his wet fur while standing next to Danny and then he just grins and for like, another minute doesn’t even think to ask what Danny is doing there in his garden except petting the dog, which Steve seems to accept as a perfectly plausible reason for Danny to come over.

D, cont.: “- ‘cause he’s a handsome guy, and they have no choice but to talk to you cause you’re- [brief hesitation]” I scream at this bit every time because the “you’re also a handsome guy” is almost VISIBLY on the tip of Danny’s tongue. SERIOUSLY.

D, cont.: “- standing right there with the dog -” Ah yes! Covered up that almost compliment so well, Danny. Brava.

D, cont.: “- and then you just- try real hard not to be yourself and maybe get a date.” Can you hear Danny whisper at himself “quick, Danny, think of another insult to keep your het cred!” Because I can. This also just makes me laugh because “try real hard not to be yourself” is so weak as in insult in the face of how much Danny’s actions over the past decade betray that he really, really does like Steve. And, I mean, there’s always the point to be made that if “try real hard not to be yourself” is a requirement to get any of these women to like Steve, that maybe Steve should ditch this whole plan and find himself someone who does like him for himself instead, and that person might be someone, oh, I don’t know, who would go so far as to drag Steve almost kicking and screaming to a dog park because he’s that invested in Steve’s love life. But oh, where would Steve find such a person? Other than less than a foot to his right, of course.

S: “And what are you doing here? I mean why a- Shouldn’t you be focusing on your own dating life?” This is Steve pretty much ignoring Danny’s entire speech to redirect focus away from himself, with all the subtlety of a car crash. And it makes a lot of sense that he’d go for Danny’s dating life - Danny is making a big deal out of Steve’s, after all - but hey, if you wanted, you could definitely read this as Steve jumping to these questions out of defense, yes, but also because he’s disproportionately invested in actually hearing the answers and letting Danny think he’s only asking about this because he doesn’t want to talk about his own dating life is safe in a very sneaky way. It’s taking cover by blending in with the crowd out in the open.

S, cont.: “Like, your ex-wife?” This specification was probably an attempt by scriptwriters to subtly give the audience a reminder of events from last season/tell them about it in case they missed it, but in-universe it ends up as this hilarious addendum by Steve that seems completely unnecessary, but he gives it anyway, like he’s wondering whether his oh-so-subtle jabs were obvious enough yet and then mentally decides that he better point out exactly who he means. He stops just shy of googling a picture of Rachel to remind Danny who she is (which, historically, could very well be necessary when it comes to Danny remembering girlfriends). (Alternately, the fact that Steve explicitly states that he’s talking about Danny’s ex-wife could also be taken to mean that at this point, that’s not obvious. Steve’s been dating multiple women, and we haven’t really heard anything about Rachel at all since the s9 finale, in which Danny only said that they’d been on a holiday together, not that they were officially definitely totally back together (yet). You could, very easily, take “like, your ex-wife?” as A) Steve fishing for answers because he doesn’t have them and/or B) a sign that Danny+Rachel is still an open-ended question.)

D: “O- Okay.” Danny has this tiny, offended stutter here that’s very Danny of him and I love it. He’s also totally ignoring Steve’s attempts at fishing and not saying a word about Rachel, which could be taken as suspect. Either way, they both keep trying to change the subject and this is not so much a conversation as both of them taking turns to go “let’s talk about my thing now (which is actually your thing, because it’s your dating life, let’s talk about your dating life, not mine)” without really responding to the other person.

D, cont.: “I’m here for two reasons. One, because you are easily distracted -” Here, the camera is briefly on Steve who is paying full attention to Danny, not any of the hundreds of other things going on around them in the park, which makes Danny’s claim so beautifully ridiculous. Steve also hasn’t shown any signs of actually being distracted so far, only an extreme unwillingness to enter in this endeavor in the first place - and even then, he is going along with all of this, letting Danny drag him places to meet women (which could mean that he does want to date but has some mental barriers and Danny pushing him is mostly good, OR it could mean he just wants to hang out with Danny more than he wants to be left alone when it comes to dating).

D, cont.: “- and two, because, I wanna take credit when this thing goes down- right, and you get a date. I wanna take credit.” Okay, so, that sounds like a pretty weak excuse to me. He wants to take credit for Steve’s succesful dating life? Is that’s why he was calling and texting Steve during a date that he set Steve up on, which already comfortably ensures he’d have more than enough grounds to claim that credit? I know this is a very wide open door in fandom, but free suggestion, Danny: ask Steve out. You’ll be able to take full, 100% credit for Steve’s dating life, and you won’t have to call him during dates to check up on him because you’ll have a live feed right across the table, and you can pet Eddie as much as you like and insult Steve even more, if that’s what you want, and you won’t have to strain something nudging and winking at Steve whenever there’s a woman in your general vicinity while Steve strains something trying to act like this is totally not awkward for him.

After this, Steve grumble-mumbles a little, Danny starts instructing him to throw the ball, Danny does it himself, and Eddie ends up needing stitches. Somewhere in the middle there’s that amazing bit where Danny is talking up a woman walking her dog and Steve makes appreciative noises and when he finally opens his mouth, he says her dog is beautiful, which just, god, that’s such a mood.

I think this is about where I’m leaving it, but a few thoughts about Steve and Danny’s phone call a little while later, when Danny is at the office and Steve is outside the vet’s place: I really like that when Danny says the vet likes Steve, Steve says “she’s at work! she’s being professional!” because even though it’s probably mostly Steve making excuses so he won’t have to step out of his comfort zone, it’s also A VERY GOOD POINT. Generally, hitting on people while they’re at work and are somewhat obligated to be nice to you is not the best of ideas.

ALSO. Actually the last point this time: perhaps my favorite bit of this entire episode was when Steve, during above phone call, went, “Me, personally, I like to meet someone and, and organically come to those feelings between me and another person. You understand that?” Now, OKAY. Firstly, I just think that’s really sweet. Secondly, if we assume this is true for how Steve approaches all relationships, including friendships, I think the fact that he basically lays eyes on Danny once and just kidnaps him into staying is hilarious, because it means Danny pointed a gun at Steve one (1) time and for Steve that was it, boom, organic feelings succesfully developed in the span of perhaps thirty seconds, and oh my god does that say a lot about Steve as a person and his relationship with Danny.

And last but not least, thirdly, Steve says he likes to come to those feelings organically “between me and another person”, which isn’t that weird - women are people, so this is a perfectly acceptable way for a straight guy to talk - but I mean, to do some more open door kicking, hey, men are people too! The phrasing here is gender neutral and that doesn’t prove anything, but it’s one of those things that really conspicuously doesn’t exclude any possibilities, either. It’s headcanon heaven (as, honestly, is this whole subplot, imho), and I appreciate that very much.

Stan looked up from his satchel, hands raised in surprise from his clothes. “What?” he asked quickly, his hands automatically floating to Bill’s. “What, Bill?”

That was one thing Bill appreciated about Stan- he didn’t resort to nicknames. He rather disliked them, actually, and rarely ever called Bill anything other than his given name. No ‘sweetie’s, no 'babe’s, no nothing. Just Bill. Short and to the point, just how Stan liked things.

Not to say he wasn’t funny- Stan was hilarious when he wanted to be and made Bill laugh all the time.

Stan wasn’t prudish, either, or necessarily strict; he just disliked babysitting his friends. He didn’t really understand that other people weren’t as mature and straightforward as he was, and expected everyone to have the same standards and reasoning as he did. Goofing off made him titchy and, though Stan looked cute with his hands on his hips and his foot tapping as he parented the other Losers, Bill preferred his partners happy and so always made sure he knew what to do.

His cynicism didn’t come from a place of hate or contradiction- Stan simply had a straight and ordered and mind, and if something misplaced one of his volumes of reasons, he would rush to jam it back into place, and could usually make it fit back in, which was nice.

The only problem with that was, he’d miss the spots in other parts of his imaginary library of reason that would fit the volume much better in his desperation to keep his world in constant order.

Temporary moral chaos was not an option for Stan. If he couldn’t immediately explain something with logic and reasoning, he didn’t want to think about it. All of these things were one of many things Bill loved about Stan, his scientific, mathematical little boyfriend.

“Nuh-nothing,” Bill replied. “Don’t wuh-worry about ih-it.”

“What?” Stan pressed, hating to be kept in what he thought of as the dark as always. “What did you say?”

“N-Nothing!” Bill rolled his eyes at the back of Stan’s head. “Stan, suh-seriously. I j-j-just wanted to know w-why you wuh-were so i-ih-nvested in your buh-buh-b-”

“Bag,” Stan finished for him. “I was just thinking about all the tests we have coming up.” Bill chuckled a bit at that. Of course Stan was thinking about tests on spring break.

Bill plugged his fingers into Stan’s sides, making him yelp and push him off. “Luh-het it go. That’s noh-hot impuh-puh-portant right now.” He kissed the stop of Stan’s head, inhaling sharply to smell the expensive shampoo the black-haired boy used in his hair. It smelled a little like rosemary, a little like campfire from the trip Stan just got back from. Most importantly, it smelled like Stan. “Juh-just focus on the /muh-moment/, Stanley.”

Stan pushed him off again, sitting on his bed and crossing his legs in his usual way; one ankle on the other leg’s thigh, hands bracing against the lower calf of the leg that was up, back almost stick straight. Very precise. Very Stan.

“Whuh-where are your p-p-parents?”

“Out,” Stan said shortly.

Bill grinned, striding towards Stan before taking his hands, nudging Stan’s long legs so they were both on the ground and pushing him back so he was laying flush against the bed on his back. “Yuh-you know what huh-h-happens when parents ah-aren’t home, don’t you, Stanley?”

“I do,” Stan agreed, twisting his hands so he was holding Bill’s wrists and rolling them over on the bed so that he was now on top of Bill. “What happens is that we watch a movie in my living room on the new television you desperately wanted to see and then take showers and go to bed.”

“/Showers/?” Bill said, laughing and scooting the two up the bed so that they were in the middle of Stan’s large, full-size bed. “Yuh-you take showers at sluh-sleepovers?”

“Yeah,” Stan said meekly. “I mean, I don’t get invited to many, and the ones I do go to are with Richie who doesn’t care. Is… is that not normal?”

Bill shook his head, propping himself up on his elbows and pressing a kiss to Stan’s lips. “Nuh-no. It’s not. B-b-but you’re nuh-not normal either, Stan U-Uris.” He made a sappy face at Stan. “Yuh-you’re eh-exceptional, b-buh-baby.” Stan could tell he was being purposefully cheesy, but he frowned anyways at the over-the-top sweetness, and Bill added quickly, “we c-can do whatever yuh-y-you want, th-though. We can t-take showers if y-you need.”

Bill knew, of course, about Stan’s obsession with cleanliness- anyone who cared about Stan did. But he also knew how important Stan’s routines were to him. Everything must be done in a certain way a certain amount of times, or a world-shattering catastrophe would happen, or Stan’s mother would drop dead, or Bill would get sick, according to Stan himself. He felt a quiet desperation to have everything just right, and nothing mattered more than that. For most people, cleanliness was next to godliness.

For Stan Uris, cleanliness /was/ godliness.

“That’s what we’ll do after the movie, then.” Stan finished the conversation promptly, detaching from Bill and standing up, heading downstairs. Bill had grown accustomed to this part of Stan, even to appreciate it, but many people thought it rude, he knew. When Stan was finished talking about something, he never changed topics- he simply walked away or picked up a book. He wasn’t ignoring you when he did it. He was simply finished. 'I’m finished talking’, it seemed to say, 'and I’m going to go away now.’

Bill pursued Stan down the stairs, looping an arm around the smaller boy and leaning into him a little at the hip. “Whuh-hat movie is it?”

“Buffalo Bill,” he replied, a faint smile splitting his lips. “I thought it was fitting.”

Bill raised an eyebrow. “Yuh-you hate Weh-hesterns, Stanley.”

“I know.” Stan smiled. “But Ben gave it to me, and I might as well watch it with someone who /does/ like Westerns.”

Stan was right- Bill did like Western movies. He liked the accents and the costumes. He sometimes thought about his friends as Western stereotypes- Mike the lone ranger, fingers hanging off of his huge, shining belt buckle. Ben the smiling sheriff, with his friendly gut hanging over his pants in his gingham shirt, his cheeks and face well-dimpled from grinning at strangers. Richie the drunkard in the saloon. Beverly the cowgirl. Eddie would be the young woman tied up on the train tracks, he thought with a smile. He himself would be the handsome lead, as people constantly told him he was. He never could figure out what Stan was, though. He couldn’t place Stan’s personality in Western tropes. He wasn’t a villain, but he wasn’t a hero either. Strange.

Bill gave Stan a quick, smiley kiss on the lips, leading him to the couch and pushing him into the cushions of the couch. “Thuh-that’s v-very juh-juh-generous of you. Th-thanks, babe.” He tried the pet name out, liking the way it sounded on his tongue. “I'l guh-guh-get your blankets.” He waited for Stan’s okay, and bolted upstairs to grab a fleece or two. He came back with a few, piling them all on Stan so that only his small face peeked out and his feet poked from the bottom, his wiry curls sticking through the woven quilt.

“Gee, thanks, stud,” Stan said sarcastically. Bill froze, looking up from where he was arranging the blankets.

“Huh?”

Stan rolled his eyes lovingly. “I said, thanks for the-”

Bill shook his head. “Nuh-no, I kn-know… What d-d-did you call me?”

“I- It was just a joke…” The boy looked at him carefully. “Why?”

“No, nuh-no, s-say it again.” Bill smiled toothily. “Juh-hust for fun.”

“I called you a stud.”

“Mhm.”

The two looked at eachother, before Stan rolled his eyes and scooted over to put his head on Bill’s shoulder. “You’re really something else, Bill Denbrough,” he said quietly, watching as the opening credits began to play.

“Buh-hut am I a st-stuh-stud?” Bill asked mischeviously, a glint in his eye that Stan recognized all too well.

“Bill Denbrough, don’t you even dare tickle me,” Stan said frantically, scooting quickly away from his boyfriend.

“I’m going to tuh-t-tickle you,” Bill responded, his voice firm and light.

“No, you’re not.”

“Yes I am!” Bill pounced, grabbing Stan’s hips and pinning them down, tickling all over Stan’s chest and torso until he was gasping for breath between laughs and twisting his hips to get Bill off of him. “Yuh-yes I am, yes I-I am!”

“Stop, oh please,” Stan gasped, tossing to and fro in his attempt to free himself. “Get off, I can’t breathe, Bill!”

Bill finally relented, dragging Stan so that his shoulder was, once again, Stan’s pillow. Stan slumped over, letting his head drop into Bill’s lap so he was glare-smiling up at him.

“You’re not a stud anymore,” he accused. “You’re a bad boyfriend.”

Bill pretended to flex his arm, trying to look ridiculous and ending up looking a little smug. “H-hey. Yuh-you can take th-the boy ou-ou-out of the st-stud, but y-you can’t take th-the stud out uh-of the boy.”

Stan snorted, lifting his arm to push Bill’s face away from him. “That doesn’t even make sense, jshut up.”

Bill pretended not to hear, pressing a finger to his lips and shushing his boyfriend. “The muh-movie’s starting, sh-shush!”

Stan complied, and they watched the movie in a lovely silence. Bill’s hands danced through Stan’s hair, winding his fingers through his coils and waves. Stan’s hair was thick, and curly, and a beautiful dark brown. It was beautiful, in Bill’s opinion. It went well with his olive skin and brown eyes. He loved running his hands through it and detangling the back for Stan, since he wasn’t flexible and didn’t ever quite reach the back of his hair. Everything about Stan was beautiful. Sculpted, even. He looked like a fashion model to Bill. Stan occasionally turned over or snuggled deeper into Bill’s lap, pulling the covers over his nose and sighing at the screen.

When the movie ended, Stan was sound asleep in Bill’s lap. The redhead smiled gently down at the snoozing boy, moving gingerly out from under him and sliding his arms under Stan so that he could pick him up.

He carried Stan to the bedroom, and no sooner had Bill set him down again then Stan woke up, sitting back and stretching. Bill looked at him in a mix of exasperation and love.

“Of c-course, the minute I puh-put you down you wuh-w-wake up.” Bill tutted, wagging a finger that Stan grabbed and used to pull Bill in so he could wrap his arms around the taller boy.

“Yep. It was my plan all al-long.” Stan punctuated the last word with a yawn.

Bill hummed into Stan’s forehead, leading him into the bathroom. “You b-big baby. Huh-how are you tired?”

“Westerns are boooring,” Stan complained, working on brushing his teeth and putting mouthwash in his cup at the same time.

Bill watched from the doorway, suggesting, “duh-did you forget about sh-showering?”

“Oh, shoot, I did forget!” Stan looked at Bill with the look of a caught rabbit. He HAD to take a shower. He HAD to.

The redhead took Stan into his arms, kissing him three times all over his face and looking down at him. “H-hey. Ih-it’s okay.” Bill rubbed the small of his back, trying to help him calm down. “Yuh-you took one th-this morning, didn’t yuh-you?”

“Yeah,” Stan said uneasily, “are- are you sure it’s okay?” he looked at his boyfriend with something akin to caution, begging Bill to not just say it was okay, but to make it okay.

Bill smiled reassuringly. “Y-yeah. We’ll be fine. You d-don’t have to wuh-w-worry quh-quite so much, Stuh-hanley.” Stan opened his mouth to object, but closed it quickly when he saw Bill’s sympathetic eyes. He was right, Stan knew, but worrying was safe. You didn’t get hurt quite so much if you were prepared for the worst.

But Bill was here, and he never got hurt when Bill was around, so he gave it a rest and stepped out of his small bathroom, shutting the door and letting Bill trail after him as he began to pick up his room, before hesitating and beginning to change into pajamas, seeming to change his mind about something.

“Whuh-hat’s that about?” Bill asked, referring to his boyfriend’s stop and start of cleaning his space. As we’ve already stated, Bill knew how much clean space meant to him.

“Don’t worry about it,” came Stan’s reply. “Just deciding not to do my routine for now.”

Bill shrugged. That made no difference to him; if Stan needed a break from routine, that was fine, because whenever Stan wanted a break from routine it meant great things for Bill.

As Stan changed, Bill took out his portable radio and began fiddling with the channels. Finally, he came upon the one he always listened to- the Bangor music station- and as Annette Funicello and her gaggle of backup singers started lilting 'Tall Paul’, Stan smiled and laughed a little.

“Whuh-what’s so funny?” Bill asked, turning to Stan happily as he snapped his fingers. Bill wasn’t much of a dancer.

“Nothing,” Stan said absently, beginning to make the bed into a two-person affair instead of the usual one. He moved his numerous pillows into different configurations as he said warmly, “this song just reminds me of you.”

“Thuh-this song?” He raised an eyebrow, thinking about the lyrics before grinning wide. “Juh-gee, that’s swuh-sweet.”

Stan ignored him, singing softly, “Tall Paaaul, tall Pau-aul, tall Pau-aul- he’s-a my all.”

Bill smiled at Stan’s back, walking up behind him and wrapping his arms firmly around Stan’s waist. He swayed back and forth a little, letting Stan hum and sing as he did so and kissing his cheek when he finished. “It’s guh-good to knuh-know you think uh-of me from time to tuh-tuh-time.”

“I think about you all the time,” Stan said earnestly, “so don’t think I don’t, Bill Denbrough-”

“I wuh-wasn’t saying that,” he said soothingly. “Luh-luh-love isn’t a cuh-contest, S-S-Stan.” Bill pushed Stan’s tensed shoulders down, leading him to the bed and sitting him down.

“Oh, I-” Stan cut himself off, thinking better of whatever he was about to say. “I know,” he said finally. “I love you, Billuick,” he began again, using the nickname just once for their special thing.

“Luh-luh-love you too, S-Sedanley.” Bill held up one half of a heart that he made with his hand, and Stan held up the other. They clicked them together- Bill with tempered excitement, and Stan with a noncommittal affection- and then let their hands fall into each other’s. Cheesy, they both knew and agreed, but it was something they’d always done. Like a secret handshake, but less… handshakey. More of a password, maybe.

Stan did it again, his little thing of walking away from conversations he was done with, and started to get into bed. He turned on his own, much nicer radio, letting the dull drone of Derry Public Radio wash over him. Stan always listened to things to help him fall asleep, and he supposed tonight was no different. Constant noise seemed only useful to Stan at one time- night. Bill wondered why that was.

“You coming?” Stan asked, patting the bed beside him. “There’s plenty of room.”

Bill grinned again, sliding onto the bed eagerly and letting Stan tease his way into Bill’s arms; hesitant at first, as he always was, before warming up to it and letting himself relax just a little. It used to bug Bill that Stan wasn’t ever comfortable with him, but he’d since realized that this was just the way it has to be.

They lay like that for a while, Bill separating and making little twists in Stan’s hair, Stan listening intently to the radio as he drowsed off. He occasionally would say something random or ask a question, one of the questions leading to a conversation that Bill would remember somewhere in the back of his mind for years and years to come.

“Bill,” Stan had asked, “do you think you’re ever gonna forget about me?”

“Of course not. Why do you think that?”

“I dunno… it’s just a feeling, you know? I mean, Eddie barely writes us anymore, and we hardly see Mike. I just… I feel like we’re all forgetting the same something. Something important.”

“Stuh-tan, you’re m-more important th-than anything to me. I cuh-c-could never forget y-you, okay?” Bill rubbed a circle into Stan’s back, his hands sure and strong.

“But what if you do?” Stan exclaimed, not sated, not satisfied. “what if I move and you forget about me, until you dont even remember we dated? And you wonder where your letterman’s jacket is? Bill, it scares me so bad, I- I never want to forget you.”

“You wuh-won’t.” Bill proclaimed this with perhaps too much confidence. “Stan, pluh-please, you’re oh-only working yuh-yourself u-u-up.”

Stan drew in breath, but didn’t say anything. “Okay,” he said, pained but agreeable, as always.

Bill’s stutter seemed to leave him for a moment as he focused on cheering Stan up. “And b-besides, I don’t think I’ll be able to forget you whuh-when you’re my lih-hittle house-husband.”

“Shut up,” Stan grumbled, hating the idea of house husbandry.

“Okay.” Bill mimicked Stan’s earlier tone, earning a kick from the annoyed Stan. “If you can make me.”

The rest of whatever they said is lost now- lost amidst the whispered 'I love you’s that Bill whispered into Stan’s ear as they did what any two teenage boys would do in an empty house. Lost amidst the quieter 'you too’s from Stan. Lost amidst the chatter of the radiohost and the whisper of sheets and the sound of sewers dripping in a slumber what would last another quarter century, and amidst car doors on the street slamming. But most importantly, lost in the infinitely changing winds of time, a small memory of no significance that almost no one would consider important, least of all the owners, until they lost it. Memories like those gave way to more adult worries, and slowly, they did end up forgetting.

Teenagers would always be wrong about what’s important, though, right?

An excerpt from the end acknowledgments in Bill Denbrough’s novel 'The Fallen Tree’, page 597:

’…And lastly, I’d like to acknowledge and thank the people I’ve forgotten indefinitely. I struggle to remember your names, I could not put it to a face in a crowd of two, but thank you. Your support has brought me here, brings me to new places.

One of you in particular eludes me, and I feel as if I have lost a part of myself whenever I remember you existed for me, in my minuscule universe. You helped me in ways I can neither remember nor imagine.

I loved you.

#authorlifemonth 11: swag

Now, admittedly I think about book swag. I look at bookmarks and temporary tattoos and all the other neat things authors get to dole out at signings and launches and think, Hmm. It’d be cool if I had a bunch of temporary tattoos with a beehive and horse on them, or bookmarks featuring Felix’s snarkiest quotes, or an Iris and the Troubles-inspired mixtape, or a mini version mock-up of The Beefcake Calendar.

However, I don’t have any of that. Clearly. What I do have is too much free time, and a broad opinion of what ‘swag’ can entail, like extra tidbits for interested readers (who may or may not exist). Most of those are found here.

On that note, below the cut is a little Xmas story (yes, I’m aware it’s no longer Xmas season) that goes out to @lisapizza and her dang weird horse-boyfriend mobile game.

“It lights up,” Eddy says, very seriously, and points to his sweater. It’s child-sized, by the look of it, and features a Christmas tree with neon ornaments and tinsel. It’s one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen.

“Yeah, it lights up,” I say. “It’s basically got LED nipple rings. Is that really your holiday look this year?”

“I like it,” Phil calls from the armchair. She toasts us with her eggnog glass. “It’s very...festive. I could be making a joke about Christmas balls, but I’m not! I’m not. Someone give me another thumbprint cookie.”

Adair reappears in the kitchen doorway, a plate of cookies in one hand and her phone in the other. “First of all, Phil, I’m cutting you off after that glass. I think your man put too much rum in the nog. Second of all…” She deposits the cookies on the coffee table and sits down on her couch. “Felix? Are you aware that there’s a certain amount of...writing about you online?”

I flop down too and curl around her, nestling my chin onto her shoulder to see what’s on her phone. “Yeah, so? Not to toot my own horn or anything but I’m kind of a feature on Blood-Horse, DRF, whatever.”

“Babe,” Adair says. She taps her lower lip, glances at me, and then closes the phone’s browser. “I mean--shall we say, fan writing.”

“Like people blogging? That’s cool.”

Phil starts to laugh. “Oh no. Oh my god. Oh, I don’t think that’s what she means, Felix.” She reaches over the back of the armchair and tugs Eddy down until he’s half on her lap. “Did you know about this? I bet there’s a bunch about you, too. Oh my god. Adair.” She leans around Eddy’s head. “I bet there’s stuff about both of them, right?”

Adair winces. “They even have a shipname.”

Phil takes off her glasses and scrubs at her eyes, laughing so hard she’s crying. “Fuck, of course they do! What is it?”

“I’m not going to tell you,” Adair says, “because I am not going to encourage you to seek out RPF of your friends. Of your boyfriend.”

Phil gives Eddy a sly look as he covers his face with his hands. “I mean, is any of it good?”

“What the fuck,” I demand, “are you guys talking about? What the hell is RPF?”

Adair kisses the side of my head. “Sometimes you’re like an alien.”

“She doesn’t use the Internet the way the rest of us do,” Eddy says, voice muffled by his palms. After a minute he inches his fingers down and looks at Adair. “My girl, I wish you had not found that.”

“It’s not like I was looking for it.” Adair’s cheeks get warm. “There was a link in a news round-up on JockeyTalk 360.”

I grab her phone and flick it open, then pull the browser back up. “Ok, since y’all refuse to actually answer my--Jesus Christ.” It’s a website called Archive of Our Own, and it’s on a page of search results: posts with titles like breaking maiden and run the rail, tagged with things like bondage, threeway, bestiality, dubcon. “The hell is dub-con?”

“Don’t--” Adair snatches for the phone but I hold it out of her reach, craning my neck and scrolling at the same time. “Felix, seriously, I’m sorry I brought it up.”

“This is like fanfiction? About me?” I pause on a post with the tag Hamilton/van Alden. “Oh, ew. That lasted all of five minutes and there’s like eighteen posts about it.” I scroll further, hit the next page. “Damn, they never write me with anybody hot. You’re gonna make shit up about my sex life, like, put Jose Ortiz in there. Hell, put both Ortizes in there.”

The three of them stare at me. I shrug and hand Adair her phone back. “What? I’d read that.”

“Noted,” says Phil.

“Philippa,” Eddy says. He strokes her cheek, then removes the empty nog glass from her hand. “Please tell me you have never read any of...that.”

“Obviously you have or you wouldn’t be all het up about it.”

“I can’t believe you knew about this and didn’t tell me!” I throw the remote control at him as he groans. “Traitor.”

“You’re always so bothered by the horseracingconfessions posts about your uncle and Jamie and all, why would I think you wanted to know people were writing weird fantasies where you date Julien Leparoux except he’s an anime horse prince?”

“Ok,” Phil says, “so we’re reading that one out loud, right?”

Adair hugs me, wrapping both arms around me until I’m settled against her chest. “I’m sorry, Felix. Please forgive me for ruining your innocence.”

“Kind of hard to believe she had any left for you to ruin,” Eddy says, and snickers when I flip him off.

“Hush!” Phil interrupts, holding her own phone up. “Gather round, children, we’re going to read a very special story. It starts off with one Felicity Hamilton caught in flagrante in the Saratoga jockeys’ room…”

She reads--in between fits of howling, where Eddy takes over in his most solemn voice--and Adair tries not to laugh at my expense and fails, and I decide that, between them and the snow outside and Adair’s pretty tree in the window, this is much better than hearing the Christmas Story for the fiftieth time.
