Supernatural trying to fill the niche of Buffy, then try to avoid being associated with it by making vampires 'endangered or extinct' then a decade and a half later going 'fuck it' and going full hog with the whole 'if you experience even one moment of true happiness' thing.

top 5 non-canon ships you'd make canon, top 5 characters you'd save from dying
Thanks! :)
Top 5 non-canon ships you'd make canon:
1. Zuko and Katara (ATLA)
Tumblr media
Well, this one is kinda complicated I guess lol. I obviously wish they were canon but at the same time I do kind of think it's a good thing they aren't? As much as I love ATLA I think it sucked at handling romance (with the exception of Sukka) so the writers may have very well handled Zutara badly if it had been canon. Plus the ship not being canon is at least partially why it has the amazing fanworks that it does. Still in my eyes they are the greatest ship that never was!
2. Buffy & Faith (BTVS)
Tumblr media
The enemies to lovers are that should have happened.
3. Damon & Bonnie (TVD)
Tumblr media
This is another case of 'the writers probably would have fucked it up if it was canon' scenario but idc the reaction from the DE fan base alone with have been worth it lmao. And Bonnie deserved to have a romance with a character she had chemistry with and wasn't irrelevant.
4. Grace & Frankie (G&F)
Tumblr media
This is one that actually kind of frustrates me because it so clearly SHOULD be canon. The subtext is all there. But the writers are probably cowards and think that one gay couple on the show is enough.
5. ???? I think that's it for major ships. Most of my otps are at least canon if not endgame. But shout outs to Fiona/Nessa (Shameless US), Lola/Elizabeth (Reign), and Bonnie/Nora (TVD)
Top 5 characters you'd save from dying:
1. Eleanor Guthrie (Black Sails)
Tumblr media
Honestly while Black Sails is overall a pretty solid show, I don't think I'll ever be able to do a full rewatch again and one of the reasons is because the treatment of Eleanor makes me too angry lmao. Paired off with two awful men and then made pregnant just so her death would be more 'painful' for her awful husband. Eleanor deserved better and fuck the Black Sails fandom for always justifying her treatment in the final season.
2. Tara Knowles (Sons of Anarchy)
Tumblr media
God another one that makes me see red when I think about it. She was killed for Jax's man pain even though he treated her like shit for 95% of their onscreen relationship. They had her killed in such a needlessly brutal way. They had Gemma be the one to kill her (who used to be my second favorite character on the show) and ruined the great a nd complex Tara/Gemma dynamic they had going in the first four seasons. Basically this death destroyed multiple things for me.
Also Jax's overall character arc would have been 100% more powerful if Tara had lived. Just imagine him finding a way to help Tara be able to take the kids and run. But he doesn't follow them because he realizes he's become too much of a monster and wants them to be safe. Like, that actually would have made me feel something for him.
3. Poussey Washington (OITNB)
Tumblr media
The show was going downhill before it happened but her death was the final nail in the coffin for me. I could never enjoy it the same way again. They killed her when she was finally finding happiness again :(
Also, while I don't want to speak too much on the message they were trying to send with her death since I am white, I was pretty uncomfortable that they spent so much time on trying to make everyone feel sorry for the guard that killed her in the season afterwards.
4. Finnick Odair (The Hunger Games)
Tumblr media
Suzanne Collins killed him off because she knew he was a fan favorite and wanted to make Mockingjay as depressing as possible. So needless. And another character that died right as he was finding some happiness :(
5. Tara Maclay (BTVS)
Tumblr media
One of the older victims of the bury your gays trope. A sweetheart who deserved better :( While my feelings about Tillow are complicated after the shit Willow pulled in S6, I still kind of think they should have been endgame you know?
Honorable mentions: Glenn Rhee (TWD), Carl Grimes (TWD), Catelyn Stark (asoiaf), Miranda Barlow (Black Sails), Adam Torres (Degrassi)
While I may not have changed the fact that Padme died in Star Wars (just because her death is kind of narratively important) I would change the way she died. George Lucas really wanted me to believe that she 'lost the will to live' because Anakin fell to the dark side????? Nah. She deserved to go out like a boss. I follow the theory that Palpatine killed her via the force by draining her life source to revive Anakin as Darth Vader, but that's not technically canon.

OKAY so I binged season 5 of She-Ra
and it was ~♡*SO GOOD*♡~
Here is my very spoilery review, from perspective of I, a Glimadora fan, but a Glimadora fan who grew up in the Queer Representation Drought of the 90′s.
OKAY, so, if you’ve kept reading firstly thank you. And may we all dance together and THANK NOELLE.
Admittedly I went into this season not hopeful anyway for Glimadora, after what happened with them last season (and the fact that Catra and Adora’s star signs match the star signs of the Showrunner and her Wife? .....Yeah).
I still love them, and think the spark of possibility of their romance is and was a gorgeous thing, and will remain one of my favorite parts of the show.
But.
WE GOT DECENT REPRESENTATION, SO very DECENT REPRESENTATION. BETTER THAN ANYTHING I’VE SEEN IN AN ALL-AGES SHOW IN MY LIFE SO FAR.
And I HAVE to be grateful for that.
The people behind Korrasami fought so that we could have canonical, actually represented Catradora. The entire Crewniverse, esp. Rebecca Sugar, fought SO HARD so we could have canonical, actually represented Catradora. Hell, Naoko Takeuchi made Uranus and Neptune lovers, and Be-Papas made Utena queer as the day is long, so we could have canonical, actually represented on-screen Catradora. So much has been done to get us here, so I can’t help but be grateful - baseline, gratitude, first and always - that we got this level of representation AT ALL.
And ALL THOSE Netossa and Spinnerella moments. MY GAY HEART. The fact that we got all those kisses, and the actual use of the word WIFE. Priceless.
AND Double Trouble. EXTRA priceless.
AND Kyle/Rogelio.
AND all the moments where everybody was queer with.....well, everybody.
This show has given us SO much, that even though I didn’t get exactly what I wanted..... I can’t be mad. I’m not. I’m just so touched and pleased.
And honestly - I didn’t know how they were going to get Catradora to where they ended up, after everything. Not having shipped it before, I didn’t have a lot of thought-energy invested there, and since I didn’t have high hopes for a Glimadora-romantic-reconciliation after their fall last season I didn’t really forsee anything Catradora going well. I thought, honestly, that if they were going to push for Catradora endgame after all, it was going to feel forced and we’d only get implications, not THE CONFESSION. AND THE KISS (both kisses!).
And everything that built up to that? SO WELL constructed. I am so impressed. Not only between Catra and Adora directly, but the fact that Catra fits so well into the Best Friend Squad that I can’t picture them without her now that it’s happened. And I never, ever thought that was gonna happen.
(And I’m not even going to start about the Utena parallels in Catra saving Adora from that last vision she was having. You know what I mean.)
NOELLE I WAS SO WRONG TO DOUBT YOU.
On that note, again, I REALLY REALLY REALLY also SO much appreciate the Spinnetossa storyline, that we got to see SO much of them, and SO many kisses, and the threat of Spinnerella having been compromised was taken SO SERIOUSLY. DAMN. I shipped it before (how could you not?) but I ship it so hard now, and HAPPILY take it as consolation about my aforementioned ship woes (which can’t even really be woes. See above).
Here, have some crappily-taken phone camera shots of me pausing and flailing over the kisses as I watched on my tablet:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And as usual, the world building for the whole show - the world itself, the plot, the historical impact of all the backstory, everything - was SO WELL DONE. I have been massively impressed on that level alone since day 1, and now, at the end, I’m still not disappointed.
Also Scorpia. Always, but especially in her friendship with Perfuma this season (love love loved the resolution between her and Catra, too. I may be on board with Catradora now but I may have still cheered a lot when she blasted her, even though she was mind-controlled, and definitely squealed at the hug).
And all the scenes between Shadow Weaver and Castaspella. The build up to her redemption was handled very, very well, too. Even though I still hate her face.
I do have to say, though, that as a Glimadora fan I’m not sure how to approach Glimbow. I did not see that coming (as much as it wasn’t explicitly shown, and as much as I appreciate that it was left open to interpretation, I do think that the timing of their “I love you” shortly before Catradora’s “I love you” was not an accident). What I DO appreciate about them together, though, is that both characters are still queer af - and in my opinion, their love pushes Bow’s sexuality in a more fluid way than I expected. When I first saw the character designs in season 1, and with how he reacted to Seahawk, I was pretty sure they were going to go ‘stereotypical gay man’ with him - and I don’t say that with any harshness on the need for gay male representation, or any doubts about Noelle or anyone else on the creative team. I say that from the background of someone having grown up in the 90′s, where the best queer representation I saw on any non adult-adult TV was Willow and Tara of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (which and who I LOVE). BUT even with their loveliness, Willow’s bisexuality/pansexuality was ERASED as soon as she became attracted to a woman (like she tripped and was like “Whoops, guess I’m homosexual now!”). So I wasn’t very optimistic about Bow being any of the LGBTQ’s except the G, BUT a) clearly I was wrong, from the start, and yay for that, and b) he reads so strongly as pansexual, in my opinion, and so does Glimmer (I know and respect that many may disagree with me on this, not trying to start any kind of wars here. Especially since we just wrapped one up ;D ). So them together actually only solidifies that representation, I think.
(And I also gotta note that I am SO PLEASED with my girl Glimmer’s character development this season, in general. I was very very glad with how they handled her, especially after how hard - though understandable - how hard her decisions in season 4 were to watch.)
Definitely definitely definitely need a rewatch, now, from the perspective of Catradora AND Glimbow. An open one, trying to see both developing from the beginning, and value and respect all that went into building them.
I wanna end by saying that one of the things I appreciate SO much about this fandom is that we all have SO much LOVE for the show itself, and the representation we’ve been given. So I hope no matter what we shipped, still shipped, whatever we wished for - we can be grateful for the gift that this show is. And hopeful, too, for a spinoff in whatever format they can give us.
(I personally want more comics, but I’m super biased.)
P.S. Shoutout also to Entrapdak, Wrong Hordak and to Keston John for all the amazing work he did with all the clones this season. Damn.
(And that moment with Prime-possessed Hordak and She-ra/Adora at the end was ALSO PERFECT.)
(Okay really shutting up now.)

for the character rates: cordelia, tara, spike?
Hi anon! Thank you so much for asking!
Cordelia
who? | only know their name | loathe | ugh | overrated | indifferent | dead | alive (because canon is stupid) | just okay | cute | badass | my baby | hot | want to marry | favorite
I love love love Cordelia. She’s just such a great fucking character, excellent development both on Buffy and Angel. She’s just so great! I love her! Also, Charisma Carpenter is a really great actress, and imo, is personally responsible for the initial success of AtS. (She’s also very hot).
That being said, because I’ve rewatched Buffy much more than I’ve rewatched Angel, I’m a little less intimately familiar with her arc on that show, which is where a lot of the best character development happens (and also season 4, but we’re keeping it positive here). So I probably don’t know her life story by heart quite like I do with my other faves. Still love. Would die for.
Tara
who? | only know their name | loathe | ugh | overrated | indifferent | dead | alive (because i say so) | just okay | cute | badass | my baby | hot | want to marry | favorite
I’m feeling pretty repetitive here, but omg I love Tara so much. I didn’t at first tbh, because I tend to have trouble with characters who are supposed to be appealing mainly because they’re cute and shy, but she really really grew on me in Family, and especially in season 6, when she stood up to Willow.
She’s such a strong character who was been through so much, and over the course of the show she learned to stand up for herself in the face of her abusers. And I love that the show presented us with different ways for female characters to be strong. Tara’s silent strength, her ability to stand up for what she believes in even when it’s incredibly difficult, her empathy, her ability to understand and comfort people who are suffering - these are qualities that many of the other Scoobies struggle with, which is why Tara is such a necessary addition to the team.
Also, insert angry grumbling about how she deserved so much fucking better (this goes for Cordy too).
Spike
who? | only know their name | loathe | ugh | overrated | indifferent | dead | alive | just okay | cute | badass | my baby | hot | want to marry | favorite
Ok, so, to be clear, I am not going to pretend that this is in any way an objective assessment of the character. Like, I’m kind of terrified of talking about him, because people have such passionate opinions about everything he’s ever done. But to be honest, I totally get why people love Spike. James Marsters is an incredibly charming and talented actor, the character is vey interesting and complex, people find him attractive (I’m gay, so obviously that’s not going to be a factor for me, but even I’m impressed by that man’s cheekbones), etc.
That being said, I’m just not that interested in him. This is partially because I have this natural tendency to gravitate towards the female characters. Like I don’t do it on purpose or anything, but I’m just generally less invested in the dudes. Because of that, I tend to view Spike mostly in relation to however he’s contributing to Buffy’s character arc. So I like him in season 2 because he’s a good villain for her, I like him in Lover’s Walk because he forces her to reflect on her relationship with Angel, I’m sort of indifferent about his role in season 4, because the writers had no idea what to do with him and it shows, but he was still funny so I didn’t mind him, he was kind of my least favorite part of season 5, because he was stalking Buffy and generally being a creep, and it was mostly played for laughs, I actually really like how he was used in season 6 (with the exception of that one scene), because I like Buffy’s depression storyline a lot, and I think her toxic relationship with Spike was pretty vital to that story. And then there’s season 7. I have so many issues with season 7, and the way it treats Buffy’s relationship with Spike is pretty high up there. I could write an essay, but I really don’t feel like expending that much energy on a character I don’t particularly care for. All I’ll say is that I really wish the final season of the show hadn’t centered so much of Buffy’s character arc on her relationship with her rapist.
But again, I want to clarify that I’m very aware that I tend to view pretty much all of Buffy’s love interests (except Faith) as accessories to her character, and that if I were more invested in his story, I would probably be singing a very different tune. And obviously Faith is one of my favorite characters, so I’m not going to judge anyone else for having problematic faves.

Ok so this is not a fandom I post about a lot but when I do I put it here so please bear with me. Skip if you want, of course. What I want to talk about is queer rep in Teen Wolf, the show, because I think it did a lot of good things in a lot of subtle ways. Spoilers to follow.
I want to start off with a few caveats: while I am a fan of this show, it ended several years ago and I have only seen most episodes once. So my recollection of it may be foggy in places. I would also like to point out that while the show does a lot of things “right” as I see it it is by no means perfect. I will get into that later on. Also I will be talking about show canon; I am well aware there are many, many fan theories about the queerness of certain characters in this show. This post is not about them. Anyways, into the breach.
The first thing that I give them credit for is including queer characters at all, which is a depressingly low bar but hear me out. With fantasy shows like this what you most often see is queer coding, not queer content. Comparisons are drawn between supernatural beings and the queer community, but there are no queer characters present. Or if there are, they are one-off appearances. True Blood, Being Human (US), the X-Men series, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which gets something of a pass because of Willow later on) all do this. Even the original 80s movie this show is based on does this in a very direct comparison that adds insult to injury by using the 3 letter f-word. My point is: this show has queer characters, it has them right from the get-go, it has them consistently throughout the run, and it has them in relative abundance. Which is, sad to say, rare.
While the show does have queer characters, it falls short in that none of them are main (with the notable technical exception of one which I will get to later.) That being said, the queer characters that are present are significant to the plot, and a lot of them are reoccurring main. They are also, like I mentioned, there from the beginning and are not written out. We meet Danny in the pilot episode, and he stays for 3 seasons. Ethan comes in for season 3 and has a role in season 6 as well. We meet Mason in season 4 and he stays until the end, and his boyfriend (Corey) who we meet in season 5 also stays for the finale.
There is an unfortunate lack of wlw characters; all of the ones I just named are gay men. However, the show does not lack for racial diversity among its gay characters; Danny is Native Hawaiian and Mason is Black. And there are a few minor characters that help add diversity to the lineup, in season 3 one half of a lesbian couple is victim to the initial trio of murders and her girlfriend is revealed to be bi later in the season. (So far as I’m aware, the bi girl survives the show.) Lydia’s grandmother was also mentioned to have had a female romantic partner (I’m pretty sure), and a minor male character in season 4 is bi.
But what very much impresses me about the queer characters on this show is how normalized they are. In the background of a party in season 2 we see two girls dancing with each other and two boys kissing as the camera pans around. These characters are not regulars, or minor reoccurring. They don’t have any lines. They’re not even named. They’re just background filler for a party scene. You don’t usually see that unless the setting is an explicitly queer one, but Teen Wolf needed a scene with raging teenage hormones and threw some queer couples in there because why not.
The queer characters are also treated with complete respect to the point that the in-universe Beacon Hills is a little unrealistic. (Then again, it is in Southern California so.) There is never any angst related to a character’s sexuality; homophobic bullying is not even alluded to. None of the queer characters have a coming out arc either (with one exception, I am coming to that), they are all introduced or accepted as already out. None of the main characters ever have an issue with a queer character and there are multiple examples of close friendships between two boys where one is straight and one is gay. Liam and Mason are closer than two peas in a pod and Liam acts as Mason’s “flight attendant” (wingman, it makes sense in context) on at least one occasion. Jackson and Danny are also shown to be close, although this is revealed to not be a gay/straight friendship later on (Getting to it, I promise.)
The relationships and lives of the queer characters are all shown to be normal; no excessive partying, no “vices”, and no orgies. They go to clubs, parties, and raves but so do the straight characters. They have varied interests and are not stereotyped. (Danny is a confident jock who is also into tech stuff while Mason is a little nerdy and awkward.) The show also doesn’t fall into the “either or” categories with sex. The queer characters are shown to have sex lives, but it is not the only part of their relationship that is examined. When twins Ethan and Aiden infiltrate the Beacon High supernatural circle to get information, it is the gay brother, Ethan, who ends up falling for his mark (Danny). Corey and Mason’s relationship undergoes several adjustments as Corey is initially an enemy to the main group. And, importantly, the queer physical displays of affection are not fetishized. The queer couples get an equivalent amount of on-screen loving to the straight couples which, as it’s on MTV, is a little racy but not pushing into softcore porn.
But this is the most important part for me, and it’s the technicality I’ve alluded to several times. Colton Haynes, who some of you may know from Arrow, played Jackson who was a main character in seasons 1 and 2 that returned as reoccurring in the final season. In the interim absence he came out as gay in real life. Now. Jackson was introduced as straight; he was romantically involved with Lydia off and on throughout the first 2 seasons. But when they brought his character back for season 6, it was revealed that he was in a relationship with Ethan, the gay twin from season 3. Basically, they wanted to bring the character back for the ending and made him queer because the actor had come out publicly since he had last been in the show. It should also be noted that the twins who play Ethan and Aiden, who are gay and straight respectively, also match their character’s sexualities. Charlie Carver (Ethan) is gay while Max Carver (Aiden) is straight.
One final, and also important, point I want to make is that for a show that deals a lot with violence and major character death/injury there are very few queer casualties. When one of the twins dies for dramatic effect it is the straight one, not the gay one. Danny is written out of the show after season 3 but because he graduated, not because he died. There are 2 exceptions I can think of; the aforementioned girlfriend of a minor female character who is killed in season 3 and a boy Mason shows interest in (but turns out to be one of the bad guys) also dies in season 5. However, all the reoccurring main queer characters make it out of the show alive, which is more than can be said for a lot of other content.
So while Teen Wolf has its failings, I think that as a whole it represents some very good queer rep in its normalization and treatment of queer characters throughout its run.
