In ‘Symphony of spores’, my new expanded cinema work, I collected and fixated mushroom spores. Mainly the mushrooms were collected through intuitive fieldwork sessions in Amstelpark during my exhibit and working period in Zone2Source apr-jun 2023. During fieldwork sessions I sharpen my senses by looking, listening, feeling in a careful and meditative way. Connecting and attracted to plants, trees, mushrooms that have a historical, medicinal, edible character. This way of perceiving the landscape around me is rooted in personal healing work with plant medicines. In ‘Symphony of spores’, magnifications of real mushroom spores on glass slides can be seen as moving light projections (so come and experience it live ;) The projection is done with the use of analog slide projectors and slow turning shutterwheels. Fixating mushroom spores is also a determination method used by biologists. Tiny mushroom spore particles are always floating around us. They’re a part of our body and connect us to our surroundings. Thats how mushrooms spread themselves. They're part of a vast intelligent underground mycelium network that connects all plants/trees sending information to each other. It’s hard to see this mushroom particle release proces, it goes in a slow way, takes time and is difficult for the human eye to spot.
The work can be viewed at my solo exhibit Plantas Harmonias connecting continents through medicinal and ritual plants 23 April – 18 June 2023 Zone2Source , Glasshouse, Amstelpark, Amsterdam.

If you are in Barcelona, Vienna, Plymouth, London, Frome or Newcastle in the next weeks, come check out Alex MacKenzie’s EXPERIMENTS FOR A SINGLE PROJECTOR, as he tours this live expanded cinema show to a few select stops in Europe (see below for dates and locations) and presents workshops along the way.
Exploring the potential of the 16mm film projection apparatus and amplifying the possibilities of this refined and precise tool, EXPERIMENTS FOR A SINGLE PROJECTOR is a suite of expanded and performed works that use the mechanism to its fullest potential; manipulating, modifying and enhancing various aspects of its functionality. Found footage, painted filmstrips and light are transformed with beam interference, bipacked looping, focus, lens and shutter alterations to create radically transformed and dreamlike spaces—epic, immersive, and abstracted. The results shimmer across the screen, uniting “the cosmic with the microscopic...in an ecstatic splendour of light” (Marilyn Brakhage).
“Alex MacKenzie is the unequivocal master of contemporary Canadian expanded cinema: using rare and outdated technology with the deft touch of a visual alchemist, MacKenzie spins his stunning and mesmerizing anti-narratives using the detritus of cinematic history to create a completely unforgettable, and undeniably powerful, alternate vision.”  -Antimatter Media Art
“MacKenzie is a key player in the revival of expanded cinema forms, having performed an array of super 8 and 16mm projection works over the last twenty-five years. His projects stretch the possibilities of the analogue form, manipulating images to beyond our received expectations.” -Chris Kennedy, Early Monthly Film Segments (Toronto)

A roll of Ektachrome (along with some plant matter) was enclosed in a black photo bag riddled with pinholes. The package was mailed. The recipient developed the film; it was later scanned. This short film precisely describes a three-day cycle of the human mind. Tracing an almost subliminal topography, we follow the movements of a man lost in multiple levels of reality, between layers of perception. This hypnotic, sweeping film and its soundtrack carry us on a voyage of the soul, while the narration is stitched through with associations, allusions, memories, and imagination, unlocking a whole new realm of contemplation. Artist Claire Lance creates a geography of perception, employing a new visual grammar to make the images speak through their formal, cultural, and conceptual analogies. Ultimately, this film invites us to experience the visceral and intimate interior world, and to adopt a metaphorical conception of space.

Spectral Wandering Sound and Images 2.0, presented by @mire_nantes, just wrapped in Rochefort-Sur-Loire, France, where a group of film and audio artists gathered to create and modify projection and performance apparatus for off-grid use as a part of the larger SPECTRAL project. Iris Film Collective member Alex Mackenzie was one of the residents on site for an intensive 10 days of research and building, along with incredible food and a stunning backdrop. Huge thanks to all who gave their time and space. Watch out for the final phase in February 2024!

I LONG TO BE CLOSE TO YOU
Cinema and Moving Image

We, like many, are itching to once again enjoy the wide open spaces of projector performance, analog style, where the screen has no limits or edges, where audience and performer intermingle, where visual wonders unspool (or are spool-less), and where light surprises us with its many manifestations. Oxford University Press has just released Jonathan Walley’s Cinema Expanded: Avant-Garde Film in the Age of Intermedia, the first comprehensive account and major theoretical and historical revision of expanded cinema. We are excited that Iris Film Collective’s own Alex MacKenzie is featured in its pages, along with an incredible array of historical and contemporary film artists including Kerry Laitala, Sally Golding, and stalwarts Luis Recoder, Sandra Gibson, and Bruce McClure. And that’s just scratching the surface. At over 500 pages, the book is a remarkably detailed and deep account of the evolution of this art practice. Highly recommended. You can listen to a conversation between the author and Erika Balsom at Light Industry here, and order the book online at the usual spots. (Tip: the ebook version features colour pics!)
