I'm absolutely thrilled to announce that the delicately monolithic new solo album from the great Don McGreevey, Insounciance, is out today on Bandcamp. Amidst his many projects and and brilliant solo work, Don's work as bassist of Earth in the 00s has a special formative relevance for me, so it's an unbelievable honor to have had the chance to create cover art for this one.
Tom Waits -- Bone Machine / 1992 / Post Industrial Gothic Americana Tom Waits' 1992 masterpiece Bone Machine is a standout in his discography for the album's nightmarish aesthetic in production and lyricism. Bone Machine is one of the more timeless albums I have ever heard. Lead Belly seems to have an overarching influence here--though he may not have been cited as so--with Tom Waits' bluesy and dark lyricism and stark atmosphere. Another pervasive influence I heard was some of the screeching and squawking sounds of industrial music. Bone Machine has excellent pacing despite being nearly an hour long. Though there are abrasive elements to this--it never feels like a chore and I attribute that to the album feeling otherworldly and lived in. Waits' lyricism grounds an album that could have been seen as alien and flashy for the sake of it. Great flow to the album, incredibly dynamic vocal performance, and structure with clear beginning, highlights and end. Genius and apocalyptic--this may be Waits' best album. #musicreview #albumreview #tomwaits #bonemachine #mucore #80salternative #experimentalrock #singersongwriter #gothiccountry #americana #postindustrial #industrialmusic #favoritealbum #favoritealbums #musicrecommendations #albumrecommendation #albumrating #kathleenbrennan https://www.instagram.com/p/CmZkOfxJsvV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

BECAUSE IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN, PEOPLE -- HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY 2023!!
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a fan-made promotional poster for "Freak Out!," the 1966 debut double album by Frank Zappa and THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION.
"These Mothers is crazy. You can tell by their clothes. One guy wears beads and they all smell bad. We were gonna get them for a dance after the basketball game but my best pal warned me you can never tell how many will show up … sometimes the guy in the fur coat doesn’t show up and sometimes he does show up only he brings a big bunch of crazy people with him and they dance all over the place. None of the kids at my school like these Mothers…specially since my teacher told us what the words to their songs meant.
Sincerely forever,
Suzy Creamcheese
Salt Lake City, Utah."

Album: Black Star Artist: David Bowie Genre: #Rock #ArtRock #JazzRock #ExperimentalJazz #ExperimentalRock 👨🎤About : Back at the height of the Ziggy Stardust era, David Bowie told an interviewer that he'd always felt like a vehicle for something else, even if he could never quite figure out what that something else was. For all the times he changed his getup--the glam alien of Ziggy, the moody existentialist of the late '70s, the pop sophisticate of the '80s and so on-he was, in his way, remarkably consistent, a barometer of where the culture was and a glimpse of where it was going. Gender fluidity, the hybridization of rock and electronic music, the transformative power of the internet: Bowie was never there first per se, but he was always there early, a transformative figure who managed to bring challenging ideas into mainstream culture in a way that felt stylish, digestible, exciting and most of all possible. His final two albums, 2013's The Next Day and 2016's Blackstar (released two days before his death), were among the grandest-and starkest-of his career. His final video, for the song "No Plan", was released posthumously on what would have been his 70th birthday. Bowie doesn't appear in the clip, at least not live. Instead,we see him in freeze-frame on a TV in the window of a rundown electronics store, just for a few seconds near the very end, a little fuzzy: Not a person, but an image fixed on the screen.
