I wonder if there's someone that met Ace and knew his parents well, both of them. And didn't realize he was their son until his execution. Frozen in disbelief thinking that Ace looked nothing like Roger and too much like his mother (I like to think he had her smile, not the toothy, kick your ass smile, but the soft, deliriously happy smile where his heart was fit to burst. That one was all Rouge). Does he mourn like his father or is the quiet self destruction all his mother? Heart too big for his chest, did he feel relief when he was finally free of it?

I wonder what dream Dadan gave up on if the idea that you age poorly if you give up on your dreams in OP is true. She was beautiful as a young woman. What aspirations did she have that faltered into the bandit life we know she has now? And based on how we saw her, it's interesting that she didn't get any 'worse' after taking Ace in given her vocal displeasure.

Does Ussop get nervous when one of the other crew members gets sick? Does he think of his mother? How much does he remember of her passing, or does he just remember desperately telling tall tales in the hopes that his dad would come back? Does he ever tell a lie and desperately hope for once it's the truth?

Does Luffy have a hard time watching bonfires? The bigger they are, the worse he handles it. Does he think of Ace on his knees finally understanding how loved he is, or does he think of Sabo screaming in the flames? Does he smell garbage burning or just flesh? A little sail boat where it doesn't belong or beads pinging across cobblestone.

Does Teach miss the noise? Does he miss being surrounded by 'family'? Or does he not even register the chill where safety used to rest? Does he value in hindsight how fondly he was regarded by so many? Do you think he hears wet gasps when passing a kitchen?

Does Doflamingo blame himself for how his brother turned out? Does he understand why Corazon betrayed him? Is there ever a time where he wishes someone understood the horrors of his childhood? How does he feel when he sees someone else wearing black feathers? Is it longing or rage?

Does Law think of home when he smells antiseptic, or sickness and fire? Does he crave dishes with a tang of amber lead despite knowing the cost? When he goes to a new island, how closely does he inspect the well? Does he respect other doctors or hold them in contempt for his homeland? Does he even remember their faces well enough to see their pieces in the mirror? Or is his face entirely foreign to his memories?

Does Sabo feel more at home undercover in a mansion or sneaking in trash heaps? Or does he always crave the wild undergrowth of the forest, imagining tree houses tucked out of sight. Does he feel strangely disappointed paying for his meals or running away from the tab alone? Did he feel bereft when he turned 17, like he was missing something or broke a promise?

Koun wasn't sure where the conversation had gone for it to end up here.

"....Monster, huh?"

The words....they stung. Did Zack really think that Koun was...what, 'Hero Material'? The thought of it almost made him laugh.....if not for the bile that rose in the back of his throat. He pushed it down, refusing to look at the Soldier as he did so. Carefully schooled expression plastering itself on his face.....so very different than the grin he normally wore.

And yet, he still couldn't stop himself from laughing. A hollow sounding laugh that echoed around him.

Laughing at the down right absurdity that had just come from the man's mouth. Laughing at the very idea that he, of all people, would be seen as a hero. Him! A selfish, bloodstained creatures such as him, a hero? Maybe....maybe at one time he viewed himself as such. But now? After everything?

Koun was far closer to a monster than Zack.

"You.....do you really see me as a hero type? That's a load of shit, and you know it. Aren't you SOLDIERs supposed to be the heroes around here?"

He pointed at Zack once he got his bearings from the laughing fit the other had given him....pressing his index finger against the other's chest.

"You claim to be a monster, but would a monster go out of his way to help those around him? Would a monster help the lady down the street as you did earlier? Would a monster be willing to go out to make the streets safer as you do?" Each question was punctuated with a slightly more forceful poke in the chest.....gold filtering into storm grey hued eyes as Koun's control over his emotions shifted. "The answer is no."

He paused briefly, and pulled his hand away, stuffing them in his sleeve and looking away.

"....If anything, I'm more of a monster than you. I'm always on the sidelines. Always letting things pass me by. I don't actively work to help those around me, only focus on things that possibly interest me. I've lost that piece of myself in the throws of time, and there may not be a way for me to get it back." He was being strangely open, and yet also vauge. Giving bits of information about himself that he normally kept locked away but not enough to pin much down. "While you on the other hand....despite the moniker of your title, you work to better the lives around you. Looking for the right answer, even if you know that you might not like the answer you get. You're always making sure those around you are safe, cared for. You have a reason to keep going."

the tiefling is like a fucking ... she doesn't even quite know what her thought process was. it felt negative. what she is, without the negativity, is a person who misses her partner whenever dronia isn't at least one room over. there's a gifted cigar between her clawed fingers. she's sitting just on the bench outside their room. the new one with a little balcony overlooking the lake. the last light they fixed up. she isn't wearing a shirt. the weather has a crisp feeling to it and she's just enjoying it. since the months the curse has been lifted, this land has been rebuilding itself quickly. taking everything back. she now sees what everybody was devastated about.

with the cigar dangling between her legs, her free hand traces the little metal bar that held the infernal engine in place. a frown. there's an identical one on her back. she doesn't even quite remember if the tattoos surrounding the machinery came first or the machinery came first. most of avernus, the first time, was a real blur. she has flashes of hacking apart imps and moments of trying to be herself. otherwise, for the most part, she couldn't be herself. she had to be zariel's.

karlach flinches, head turning quickly, the hand with the cigar raising. as if she was absolutely ready to fling that at someone as a weapon. it's the way she instantly smiles, this small flicker to her lips, body relaxing again, returning to it's hunched forward position overlooking the lake. all when she realizes who it was. it's hard to believe that a few seconds she was so eerily unsatisfied with herself. now she isn't quite as much.
