Character study: Solas - Dragon age Inquisition

Exploring a soft and gentle side of Solas.

This started practice on realistic looking skin (freckles are a lot of fun to paint!) but as always I never leave it at that. I'm really happy with how this portrait turned out. Soon I may try my hand at digital drawing. Any recomendations from digital artists? :)

I always just assumed that the solas romance was restricted to female inquisitors bc straight is default and this is not a Gay Character(TM). Then I found out today that they actively CHOSE to restrict him to m/f romance specifically BECAUSE they didn’t want to play into harmful stereotypes about queer men being predatory liars. And it made me tear up a little. I thought it was lazy and it turned out to be thoughtful. I’m very glad to be wrong.

When he returned from his walk, he smiled to see the Inquisitor sitting atop his desk. She looked to be in a particularly good mood, although her smile turned a little coy as he approached and let himself be pulled in for a lingering kiss. She had made it abundantly clear that she would not hide their relationship, and over time he'd grown more or less accustomed to her bold affections, but he still hesitated slightly before wrapping his arms around her shoulders and leaning into it.

She bit gently at his lower lip and he gasped, feeling his cheeks grow hot and hoping no one was watching - she was being even bolder than usual today. Having wrapped an arm around his waist, she pulled back to stare up at him, easy from where she remained seated on his desk. She leaned in and kissed the corner of his mouth. "You should come to my chambers soon," she whispered against his skin, making him shiver a bit. Then she kissed him properly again and pushed up to a standing position without breaking the kiss.

Finally she pulled away with a bright smile and started walking away, hands clasped in front of her. He smirked. "My book, vhenan." He watched her pause mid-stride before her shoulders slumped.

"Damn," she muttered under her breath as she turned and handed him the heavy tome. "It's no fair, you can't possibly need all these at the same time."

"I cross-reference, as you well know." He kissed her forehead while she frowned at him. "You can borrow it when I'm quite done." She sighed loudly before shrugging.

"Read fast, then."

Summary:

"My dreams are growing more abstract. Tonight was only smoke and fire, confused screaming... And the eyes of a wolf. You are lost, it told me. In his voice. Perhaps I am."

Lavellan was startled out of her thoughts by the sound of gentle padding footsteps on creaking wood. Adris tried her best, bless her, but there was no sound that did not carry in the quiet of their back-alley Orlais home. Shaking off the sudden spike in her heart-rate, she quickly docked her quill and closed her journal, spinning to greet her friend with a warm smile.

"Sorry," Adris hummed, their freckled shoulders offering a meek shrug of apology. "We need a rug."

"Wouldn't make much difference," Miriel assured, her smile falling through almost as quickly as it had come. She couldn't shake the image of those canine blue eyes out of her mind. In a second, Adris had crossed the room to kneel in front of her, taking pale, trembling hands into eternally warm brown; Adris' larger hands engulfed her own almost entirely.

"Look at me," she murmured, bright hazel-green staring into Miriel's soul as if they could replace the burning of her dream -- and they almost did. "Does it help? Writing it all down like that?"

"Sometimes." Miriel's gaze fluttered for a moment, heavy from a wave of fatigue as if she hadn't slept at all. She could hear Adris breathe a concerned sigh through her nose, resting their foreheads together; grounding the thoughts away.

"For what it's worth," she said, "I don't think you're lost."

The care in her fellow Dalish's words squeezed Lavellan's chest. How could she look upon this... this mess of a creature, scarred and sickly and fragile and sleepless, and think there was anything more to be found? The confusion quickly turned sour, pushing Adris away and shooting to her feet to pace. "You don't know that. You can't know that. If you knew-.."

"I don't know because you don't say!" Adris' voice wasn't quite angry, but it was certainly raised as she watched Miriel all but wear holes in the floorboards. "You can't keep holding in whatever it is you think is so broken about you. You're not more special than any of us just because you're big. You still get to feel."

"No, Adris, I don't." Miriel didn't know if she looked to her fellow with rage or pure desperation. Something inside her screamed, begged to be set free, but it wasn't that simple. It could never be that simple again. "You don't know the burden of leadership you never asked for. You don't know the weight of having a body that betrays you with every waking hour. You don't know what it is to have your dreams haunted by a man you haven't seen in four bloody years, or a woman you killed with your own cowardice. You don't know the pain of knowing your decisions caused the deaths of thousands of people, your own clan included. You don't know the kind of bitter, evil hatred that sits in my gut every time I have to think about the Creators, or the Chantry, or the bloody shemlen outside our door who look to me for answers but would kill me in the same breath! You don't know the madness that drove me to this!" She gestured roughly to the self-inflicted scars on her own cheek, "Or what it is to feel every bone in your hand cramping only to remember he took that with you along with your heart!"

Her breath choked and her legs gave way, crumpling her painfully to the ground as sobs hiccuped from her throat without permission, like they had been waiting a lifetime for the chance to escape her. Adris didn't move, watching her with wide, wet eyes until she spoke again; a hushed, hoarse whisper this time. "All of that-.. If I show it, for-.. for even a moment. I will be weak. Our enemies will see their chance and close in upon us. You don't know-.. You don't know how hard I have to try to stay hidden. I can't let them see me, Adris. I can't."

There was a long silence before the creaking of her footsteps sounded again. Slowly, Adris knelt before her, hand slowly cupping her scarred cheek and lifting her gaze once more. "They aren't here, Miri. I am. I see you, you have to know that. More than the pain. I could never know how hard it is to be in your body, but I know how it feels to be outside. How bright you are. I don't see some broken fragile little thing, you know? I see you. Scars and all. I see you."

And for the first time in the long years since solace was the arms of a god, Miriel almost believed it.

Not that I don't love my Kotaloy fic (I do!), but it is so wild to me that my Solavellan fic is considerably larger, has been around for longer, and is the fic of my soul (I wept when I finished writing it earlier this week) and yet has a fraction of the hits and engagement.

I'm SO grateful that people really love Medicine, seriously, my Kotaloy readers are the best! I just wonder why Inevitable doesn't seem to garner the same interest?

A Dalish elf wakes a second time in Haven. At least this time she is unchained, but still finds herself trapped and bound to an organization full of humans and strange, subservient city elves. And that one elf mage who is neither timid city elf nor Dalish, not that he has been much comfort.

Fen'an is feral and violent, distrustful of humans, and easily agitated. Not only a pathological liar, she is secretive and private to the point of absurdity, making anything she admits questionable. Being difficult seems to be her only joy. Her adjustment to Inquisitor does not go smoothly.

I’m trying to figure out why it irks me so much to see Astarion with soooo many female Tavs. Art and fics of Astarion with women dominate the Astarion tag and I just wish there was more male content. Maybe it’s because I feel protective over Astarion and his queerness and worry that these writers/artists are erasing that side of Astarion.

Tumblr is a female-dominated website, and RPG fandoms in particular will reflect that with the type of OCs people make. It is what it is :/

It is also not really my place to make any such judgments as a nonbinary straighty. All I can say is, I find it a bit boring to see him with so many, like, just straight up reglier Lavellans lmao. But blue. They're blue Lavellans now. Solavellan did a number on the RPG girlies on this site. Derogatory btw. (I know I said good vibes only but I meant that only for BG3. I am an eternal Dragon Age hater.)

It's just a bit bland, that's all I can say with any sort of authority (aka personal opinion). But a lot of really popular fanart seems to have masc Tavs? I have personally seen plenty of Astarion/M!Tavs, as well. But mostly because Astarion with a female Tav usually means hot elves/drow and my eyes roll back into my head when I see those and my brain blocks them out. And I don't read Astarion x f!Reader type stuff either.

Astarion is pansexual, however, so him being with women is just as valid as him being with men (or nonbinary people, we exist also). Individual writers erasing the fact that he has canonically been with men is one thing, but I don't think just him being with women is the same as erasing that? And you can't really know which writer is and isn't erasing his queerness unless you read all of their content. But again, not my place, just something I've seen people say.

However, I do understand the frustration, where it might feel like erasure just from the sheer amount of one type of content specifically overshadowing everything else.

All in all, it's complicated, and I don't think it's my place to make any sort of judgment on this. Aside from "Hmm. Boring." Which might not be what you want, and I'm sorry for that.

Expressions + Mannerisms (part 2)

By semi-popular demand, another analysis of Solas and his expressions :)

For all you fanfiction writers and solavellans!

I would like to state, for the record, a lot of what I say/have said is purely my own personal interpretations and understandings, and by no means should you take my word as gospel here. This is just some fun :)

I stated in a previous post (I shall call 'Part 1' for simplicity) how Solas has 2 expressions; his 'in the moment' expressions, in which his true feelings are on display, and his 'in character' expressions, in which he's very much putting on a persona.

If you're in solavellan hell, have some hyperfixation-tendencies and/or unresolved feelings towards a specific fictional character (like myself), you'll probably be able to tell the difference between these 2 expressive states of his.

Allow me to elaborate ;)

Solas, In the Moment "when he's honest/caught off-guard/not 'in character'"

Solas clearly has trouble with lying; he's rather terrible at it. I would go so far as to say he only ever lies to you once in the entire game (lying outright, I mean); and it is after the Winter Palace;

"You miss court intrigue... When were you at court?"

"Oh. Well, never... Directly, of course." <- big stuttering liar.

He can't lie worth a damn, but he's by no means honest; he's manipulative, deceptive and sly. I believe I heard someone describe him once as having a 'malicious compliance with/towards the truth'.

I believe his expressions, as well as mannerisms, follow this mentality.

I'll show you several images/scenes in which I believe Solas is being honest/showing himself without his guard up. (And in 2. Solas, In Character, I will show you the contrast).

This one will be hard to show without gifs (which I'm clueless on how to create, forgive me);

A. He blinks a lot, very a-rhythmic.

B. He gets this look about him, and I don't know how to describe it, beyond "'scuse me?" (the long face gets longer, shrug)

Genuinely surprised:

C. He looks very deep in thought/far away - and sad (this man needs some therapy) this is the face he makes when he knows no-one can see him (I'll make a part 3 going into these comparatives of 'you can see me'/'you can't see me');

No ones looking, it's okay (it's not, but whatever) face :

D. He just looks sad when he's being quiet/honest/not putting on some bravado/persona. (You know how 'resting bitch face' is a thing? This man has a resting depressed face, and i think it has to do with the tragedy - he practically embodies philosophical pessimism)

Acceptance/I don't see a way forward/I need a break face:

E. He has the softest look about him when he's touched/shown affection (yes these are all from the dream-kiss scene) (bless my poor solavellan heart)

Yes, I like to be held, please kiss me on my face face:

F. Smug face... He has a smug face (to be fair, this is literally him revealing he has complete control over when you're awake/asleep... and much more, given the context of Tevinter Nights - idk this face always creeped me out actually XD like i knoooow this guy could fuck me up if he wanted)

"It's my world, you're all just living in it" face:

G. He fidgets a lot when it's just him, or he's talking to you honestly. Like he always has to be doing something with his hands. (I noticed he doesn't do it when he's in groups, or with others) - not a facial expression but I thought it was interesting behaviour. In fact, his movements in general increase a lot - he fidgeted, he sways, he wobbles, he gestures, moves his head a lot. (Just watch all of his personal quest, you'll see what I mean). (He also does this when you first meet him, but I chalk it up to he's just super excited that you're not dead and finally you can fix his mess - since he was 100% sure you'd be dead and he was ready to bolt with his 'i didn't say it was a good plan' plan)

At the risk of just listing typically behaviour in people with certain emotions, I'll move on to his 'in character' part.

2. Solas, In Character.

A. He blinks rhythmically, every like... 5/6 seconds?? (yeah, I know... I do have a hobby besides this stuff i swear XD i just like this egg). It's soothing, like a heartbeat. The blinking just always stood out to me with his character, idk.

B. He smiles a lot, but I can't tell if I know who he is and what he's doing, and that's clouding my vision, but it feels very much like a job interview kind of smile. Like, every split second it falters just a bit.

This man just doesn't want to smile (though, I suppose this is early in game when he's very much 'these aren't people' 'oh i have to pretend really hard rn'

C. He stands pretty damn still and stiff - if he's doing this i'm 99% sure he's being manipulative with you, sometimes the only movements he has in a scene is him blinking, perhaps glancing sideways. - think just before the journey to skyhold when he gives you a talk about the orb and how you need to prove yourself - he's in 110% manipulative mode

The trouble with Solas is, he doesn't have many tells - but the ones he does have are big. And, without delving into scenes as they stand, I'd have a hard time expressing this.

But I will leave you with my favourite expression-transition in the entire game.

How he goes from optimism/pride when standing beside Inky, to when the figure passes him, his expression becomes so serious/foreboding. I love it so much.

And I once again want to mention how much I just adore the little details of animation, from eye movement, skin twitches, or full on bodily movement. - especially for a character I adore. It's beautiful to look at, especially as someone who studied animation (absolutely wasted degree on me, I swear) and gets very attached to fictional characters (particularly ones as complicated as the dread egg).

In future parts, provided I get flycam to work on my pc - I'll be able to go through scenes of the egg to give him a bit more of an in-depth view (with gifs and whatnot, can you imagine?).

Most of my fics have happy endings, though I really like them with a tinge of uncertainty or bittersweetness.

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

I do write smut! I love writing smut, it's such a good challenge and it makes me happy. I love characterization through smut - and it's such an interesting way to do characterization. I write all sort of smut? I do love playing with power dynamics in sex scenes.

The closest I've written is Comfort, a Solavellan vampire fic, which uses some BtVS lore? It's not crazy tho!

Not that I know of!

12. have you ever had a fic translated?

Not that I know of either. I think I'd be a little apprehensive.

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

nope. I'm not sure how i'd do that? writing feels like a solitary thing, even when asking for feedback and input.

The closest is a shared timeline/ideas where my OC interact with another person's OC and both of us wrote in the same continuity.

14. what's your all-time favourite ship?

hmmm. Once I've not written for and probably never will, Spike/Buffy.

if it's writing for, I'd say it's still Solavellan.

15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I think if I want to finish it, I will? I have some old WIPs, but the reason I'm not finishing them is lack of want? Do or do not kinda thing I think.

16. what are your writing strengths?

I've told I've had good pacing. I think I write pretty good smut.

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

Descriptions? I tend to not want want to describe things. I'm also not great at moving characters through space - he went to the door, he looked out etc? I tend to slip into passive voice when writing characters moving around unless it's combat action or sex.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

nope.

"Hello," he said in Spanish

is perfectly valid.

A few short words like endearments - where the speaker would use a specific term in a different language than what's spoke is fine. Items that are specific and not translatable and would typically be borrowed words in a different language are fine too (kimono. computer. kayak)

20. favourite fic you've written?

This is SO hard. I was just looking at some old fics I really really love?

but I think right now, I'll pick my newest fic, Passing Through (wol/Tansui, E) because I love it very much and I had so much fun with it.
