Savana Santos – Singer, Songwriter & Producer Who Nailed the Pandemic Vibe

Three years ago, March 12th 2020, is remembered by many as the day the “once-in-a-century” global pandemic became real. It was the day after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. NCAA cancelled March Madness. Major League hockey, soccer, baseball and golf hit pause on their seasons and/or pre-seasons. And Tom Hanks and his wife announced that they were diagnosed with the coronavirus.

It wouldn’t be until late June that year that a relatively unknown Nashville band called Avenue Beat quietly loaded F2020 to TikTok. They went to sleep and as the lead singer Savana Santos says, the song “popped off”, with 4.5 million views by the next morning.  The lyrics hit hard…and hit in a place that everyone could feel.

About producing F2020 Savana explains that “vocals are everything, I just stack until I can’t stack no more”. Her “vocal wall-of-sound” would make Phil Spector envious. The New York Times would go on to call F2020 the “Song of The Year”, saying “It’s delivered with a droll, self-conscious shrug, airy harmonies and twitchy percussion.”

Avenue Beat would later release an album (The Debut Farewell Album), with some fantastic songs including Woman and This Is Goodbye.  If you are a sucker for “end of an era” songs like George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and Green Day’s Good Riddance (Time of Your Life), then you’ll get the vibe on This is Goodbye.  

With Avenue Beat now disbanded, Savana is still in Nashville and producing music, writing and singing.  She’s released some music under the pseudonym "shmavana shmantos”, which you can find on Spotify. Her Instagram account has posted two song-shorts since February 27th (tagged #NewSong) with promises to her fans that the full songs will be posted “soon, soon, soon”.

oli uses :3 and it’s variants all the time i’m gonna be so serious. he seems like the kinda guy to use excessive amounts of emoticons he’s out here :) :3 :P :D -ing it up.

short or not, I'm working on revisions for 14. Still tossing around if I'll grab part of 15 to boost the word count so it's not so brief, or maybe lump the whole thing together. Not sure if I'll do that though, because ch15 still has some days of writing ahead of me. I'll have quite a bit of vacation time next week, so a new chapter might be posted by Wednesday one way or another. Fun tidbit: 15 gets a tiny bit spicy.

In other news, 16's notes are getting a little crazy. I worry it's going to be another series of meanderings through metaphysical ideas, but there's a lot that happens, so I'll try and keep it interesting. :) I'm a little concerned that there's actually so much that happens that it might end up needing two chapters to cover? It's definitely going to need a lot of writing, so I don't plan on posting that until 2021.

7 - Which part of writing do you struggle with most?

Starting. Once I get started, I'm fine, but I get so Stuck on actually starting during a writing session. Today it took over 2 hours to get the first word down, and after that it's as easy as zoning out and letting my fingers go, but that first word was torture.

It's like that every time pretty much. There are some days where I can't start at all, no matter how much I want to. Peer pressure helps, if I have someone to yell at me to start or drag me through a sprint.

8 - Do you listen to music while you write? If so, share a song that’s been inspiring you lately.

I do, but not specific ones really. I just shuffle my liked songs on Spotify. Today has been one of those days where I put my headphones in and forgot to actually start any music though xD But I'll list some songs that I've put on repeat for whole days before

Warlord AU, which I've...started at least two of? I go out of my way to Not read them because I want to write my own. I'm working on an amnesia AU and I don't think I've written that yet. If I've written a witcher Jaskier AU then I don't remember it and want to do one.

I also really, really, really wanna write a roleswap AU where Jaskier is a witch...
