Fabre is most widely known as an entomologist. I had some plan with him having a fight with Darwin over the whole natural selection thing (Fabre was religious and evolution theory did not sit well with him apparently).
For his design I tried to draw him as well as I could into the SSF style.
Powers:
Similar to Darwin, Fabre can transform into creatures. However, Fabre is limited to arthropods. Unlike Darwin, Fabre can easily sustain partial transformations and combine traits of multiple different arthropods (for example, a jumping spider with moth wings). He can also determine the scale factor for his full transformations, e.g. enabling him to transform into a huge dragonfly (I like dragonflies).
Also unlike Darwin, Fabre can differentiate between sexes (very important for some species of insects).
The mantis, for example, is a species that exhibits sexual dimorphism. To make a quick getaway, Fabre can transform into the male version. If he's fighting, he would probably transform into a female mantis. However, this change in sex translates over to his human body, and so he has to be mindful when shifting back (this is mostly for """humor""" purposes).
His hat always stays.
Darwin does not have as much control and finesse over his transformation ability as Fabre does. The downsides to Fabre's ability is that he cannot transform into animals that are not arthropods, limiting him.
Some background + info:
Fabre is a beloved scholar. To insert him into SSF, I imagined he traveled to London to give a speech or a lecture. He runs into Darwin and the SSF. I don't know how to proceed from here but I'm sure I will think of an idea soon.
saw the ‘tallest deputies’ post so was wondering..who were the shortest?
I only know Marat and Fabre. Marat is typically described as being under 150cm (4' 11") but I can't say if this is in Pieds du Roi or converted to modern measurements (if Pieds du Roi, then he'd be taller, around 155 cm?)
Fabre I am not sure, but he is constantly described as short, so whatever was "short" for them.
Fabre: Tsk tsk, monsieur Darwin... it seems you have much to learn still from observation.
Darwin: Damnit...
Tapputi: Observation is useless when it comes to illusion! Watch this!
Darwin (thinking): Large abdomen, high strength, not flying, mantis...
Darwin: Wait! Tapputi -
Explanation: Fabre was partially transformed as a female mantis. By using her powers, Tapputi accidentally scented the entire team with male mantis pheromones. Darwin (animal expert) knew this was a bad idea because female mantises will cannibalize the male mantis after mating.
I got lazy halfway through and failed to finish it properly. Whatever, these are just my thoughts.
