Sora’s Time to Shine

Summary: Mari is already not putting too much expectations going into watching the Final Smash Presentation when someone close to her besides Kirby and Edelgard’s beloved Professor pops out of nowhere in said Presentation. All hell breaks loose (but in a good way).

Setting: Mari and co.’s house in Daly City, California; October 5, 2021

Notes: I was pretty behind in seeing the reveal since I was pretty tired when it came out and I had to check a friend’s post on Plurk to make sure that it was not all for the jokes before watching it on Gamespot and writing this story down. And yes, the Byleth in my S/I verse is the female version in case anyone is curious. And yes, it took me until around 8 AM to write this up. Featuring Luther Vandross. “Hurry Mari, you’re about to miss it!” Kairi is dragging me out onto the sofa to see the final Smash Ultimate Presentation on the living room pretty early before plopping ourselves onto the sofa.

“Look, Kairi, guys. I hate to be a party pooper, but I have no clue about who could it be,” I try to be realistic in my views.

“Well, at this point, my beloved, it could be anybody from the video game world,” my dear Philip chimes in while trying to reassure me, “Besides, as soon as it is done, we shall try to reply back to this non Smash invitation that El had found in the mail today.”

“Huh, is that correct, El dear?” I asked my regal adopted daughter for confirmation.

“Why yes of course, Mother,” she replies as she passes me the invitation, “I believe that a friend of yours has sent us one, but I didn’t want to open it immediately since this is addressed to you.”

“Okay then, I will get to read it and reply back once the Presentation is over and see who gets to fight with Kirby and Professor Byleth,” I smiled back at her.

“I couldn’t believe that there was a leak that just came out before this Presentation video and it is about music. Who was that dense enough to do it at a time like this?” Riku mumbles as he gets the video streaming on the Nintendo Direct page in his laptop.

“You know, Riku, sometimes people can act very idiotic at times, so there isn’t much we can do besides ignoring and avoiding that as much as possible,” Harry sighs as he is bottle feeding and gently rocking Serena as she had cried a while ago to be bottle fed.

“Guys, have you guys seen Sora lately?” Issa asks us while carrying Chris in her arms, “I haven’t seen him in the last few days. He didn’t even reply back to either my or Kairi’s texts and calls. Do you think he’s off to visit Jack and Sally in Halloween Town? It’s nearing Halloween soon.”

“That’s really a good question, Issa,” Ahk agrees, “I had given up trying to find him by calling over on the phone since last Thursday. All I have gotten from it were many ‘The subscriber could not be reached’ messages.”

Even Riku and Kairi are in a loss for words as they turn to each other and wonder what is up with our friend lately. Did he just went poof without us knowing? Kirby always informs us through his many Poyos that he would have to head off to Smash whenever a new tourney starts or a newcomer arrives and Edelgard’s class often gets shorter class schedules or early dismissals whenever Professor Blyeth gets to fight in Smash: she is the professor handling the Black Eagles class. Sometimes even El, Petra and Dorothea along with a few others (and yes, that includes the Gatekeeper) would come over to Smash to spectate from the sidelines and support their beloved Professor.

There is a long silence when the Nintendo Switch title card plays in the laptop and Karina directs us all to watch the screen to see many clips featuring many Smashers in the current tournament before it transitions to Sakurai-san in the studio explaining about the video as well as showcasing the Mii Fighter costumes.

“Hey look, Isabelle the Dog’s demon slaying friend from Bethesda is now coming to Smash to rip and tear up the competition!” Moana screams when the Doomguy Mii Gunner costume appears.

“Good for him; I know that many fans really did want him to be in Smash, though the costume is a nice addition,” Issa agrees. “That now makes three Bethesda franchises represented in the costumes.”

“Even the Octolings and Judd the Cat got hats based on them too,” I chime in as well.

“Oh hey, guys! Sakarui’s about to reveal the last fighter for the Second Fighter’s Pass, so keep down it and don’t expect too much,” Karina informs as Sakurai transitions to the main event and we all stay silent and stay glued to our seats.

The screen turns black before the usual Smash logo opening shows up, but instead of the usual zoom in, it then turns into a flaming Smash logo with all the Smashers up until Kazuya Mishima (yeah, the guy who tried to drop Kirby off a cliff) looking at it and covered in the shadows. Did MH decided to get them to show up in there and meet the last fighter in the dark? Probably, I bet that he might be keeping it as a surprise and possibly even conserving electricity at the same time. Then cut to Inkling Girl looking in awe with the Smash logo reflecting onto her pupils as a nice ode to the first reveal trailer for the game/tourney, I honestly love this shot.

Wait a minute, the logo turns into stars and the next scene shows everyone frozen in place as toy-like ambiios?!? How is it even possible? Well, it does certainly confirmed once again that the video game version of the tourney is set in a world of make believe after all. I could swear that a lot of people crying their eyes out as they are watching this. It looks like this is the end of one great video game series about mascots fighting among each other. Or is it? Because the camera is aiming at Mario as if he looks like he’s trying to take a nap while standing up.

Riku then proceeds to mumble some words to me incoherently that something big is coming the moment Mario wakes up to see a glowing light to see the last remaining flame glowing on the floor, which I do agree with him. Suspicious right? Oh God, Mario no! Please don’t touch the fire for everyone’s sanity. Wait, hold on a second: that isn’t not just fire that he just grabbed on and then tossed it into the sky like a boomerang: the mystery object looks like a Keyblade and there’s that Mickey keychain! Yep, that’s a Keyblade alright. Could it be...

I could recognize that beam of light that Keyblades often produce whenever they lock and unlock Keyholes to other worlds, so does everyone in the room. Riku and Kairi hugged onto each other as if we’re about to brace for an emergency (Karina and Moana also did the same), Ahk stares at the screen to see if he’s not imagining things all the sudden, Issa has her mouth drop in shock, Chris and Serena didn’t cry throughout this entire presentation, Harry gasps and nearly drops Serena’s bottle, Philip turns to me for answers while Edelgard begins to sweatdrop in concern.

No words are exchanged as the light grows and shines brighter before it proceeds to shoot itself away from the Keyblade to reveal a Keyhole on another part of the room. It then glows bright within as the camera switches back to the rest of frozen Smashers as the light begins to fill the room and revives Link, Cloud, Incineroar and Mewtwo as they all gawk at it as it reveals something from the World of Light with the orchestral rendition of Simple and Clean playing in the background. And that’s when it hits us right at the gut: the familiar spiky brown hair poking out from that Keyhole.

“What!?!” Kairi shouts as the Keyhole ‘spits’ out Sora from the World of Light.

“H-h-he actually got in, for real?” Riku squeaks up.

“Oh my…” I gasp in pure shock as we watch the whole thing played out.

“Sakarui finally did it?” Issa adds in to the discussion.

“Well, it’s about time that they managed to get his darn behind into the tourney,” Karina seconds in.

Soon enough, Sora finally wakes up from his nappy time and takes notes from Peter Pan and Tinkerbell as he flies around, sprinkling fairy dust all over the other Smashers, before landing on the floor and the Keyblade flying back to his hand.

“Damn it, Sora!” I scream as the splash screen pops in.

“Kai, your boy has finally made it big time!” Moana shakes Kairi in congratulation rather rapidly that it nearly gives my lil sis a dizzying spell.

“Moana, please don’t make Kairi that dizzy,” Harry had to tell her that.

“Whoops! Sorry Kairi,” she apologizes to her which she accepts.

So with that, we switch back to Sakurai going in depth with Sora’s moveset after he discussed about the Kingdom Hearts games and world. And he has gotten 4 costume changes, man Sora, that’s a big wardrobe you’re bringing in, oh wait, he even got the Timeless River costume too. That makes it 5 then.

“Oh gods, Sakurai is making us suffer by watching Sakurai using Sora to beat up everyone,” Ahk tells us as the Sora moveset showcase begins.

“No kidding,” Harry muses as we see Sora beating everyone in Battlefield.

“Whoa, they went for Sealing the Keyhole instead of having Trinity Force with Donald and Goofy? What a bummer,” Karina bemoans in dismay.

“Well, you know modern Disney: too overprotective of their IPs,” Philip reminds her.

“Oh new stage, what could it be?” Riku gleefully chimes in before they reveal Hollow Bastion as the stage, “Whoa, Hollow Bastion. I never thought that you will return again.”

Then the stage changes into Dive to the Heart and it had Riku and Kairi in the stained glass in one, Riku being the main focus of the second one, Roxas in the middle of the third, Xion in the fourth, Terra for the fifth, a sleepy Ven in the sixth, and Aqua’s in the seventh.

“Pretty!” I complimented the look of each stained glass.

“Quite impressive I will admit,” El agrees with me too.

Then Sakurai begins a playthrough with Sora facing Cloud and Sephiroth in Hollow Bastion, for a while, we all thought that he’s going to be a goner with Cloud and Sephiroth beating him up in the Stamina match but then the tides begin to turn in his favor after Sephy lost his full stock and with Sora having to take down Cloud next. When he did, the scene begins to go into a slow white fade out with a Game!

“Alright! Sora did it! He defeated both Cloud and mean old Sephy,” Riku cheers on.

“Woo! Go Sora!” me, Kairi, Moana, and Karina screams aloud.

“That was brilliant!” Harry agrees before he turns to Serena, “Did you hear? Uncle Sora managed to defeat two opponents in a Smash Ultimate playthrough.”

“9 songs is better than nothing at all,” Issa observes, “It would be a licensing nightmare to talk to Disney if they can borrow a couple of songs from them and they straight up refuse to assist, oh well. Oooh, a Dearly Beloved Swing arrangement, nice! I better get that save file on the Switch prompto!”

“And check out that Spirit Board: Aunt Kairi has a Spirit of herself,” Edelgard informs us as the Spirit Board for KH is revealed.

“Oh gee, never thought that it could ever happen, but thanks,” she blushes.

“Hey, I got one as well, same with Axel, Xion, Roxas, Aqua, Terra and Ven,” Riku joins in, “Marina is so going to be happy to see her boyfriend as a Spirit. She will probably try to get him real soon.”

“You bet it right, Riku, you bet it right,” I nod and agree with that last statement.

“Oh hey, he’s going to be ready within a few weeks’ time,” Karina speaks up, “Neat! The roster is now complete.”

“Even Steve and Alex have amiibos of themselves being made, that’s even more wonderful,” Ahk takes note of it, “I’m pretty sure that Sora will have one of his own along with Pyra, Mythra, that jerk who tried to threw Kirby off a cliff, and even Sephiroth soon.”

“WHAT?!? Kingdom Hearts are coming to the Switch too!?!” I am surprised to hear the news as Sakurai reveals this new information, that is so mind-blowing.

When it fades to black then to the Ultimate mural, the camera then goes for the space between Ganondorf and Dark Samus to fill in Sora’s spot before panning back. Man, this Presentation is long and is finally ending, thank God; it must be tiring to sit down and watch a nearly hour long video as Sakurai showcases the screenshots he has made and showed off in Twitter. Man, so many memories and montages. And the achievements, wow, that is a lot of them, it will be a game feat that I don’t think it will be broken for a long time.

Man, I will miss the presentations and Sakurai’s corny jokes for sure. I wish him a nice deserving break from all the game development for sure as he gives thanks to everyone from the devs to the players to the people prompting the game and ends it off with a heartfelt goodbye as it fades to back into the full reveal trailer.

“Oh gee, I’m going to miss the Smash Presentations,” Kairi sighs, “I can’t believe that we’re coming to an end.”

“Man, it’s finally over,” Riku gasps in remark as the full trailer plays out, “I don’t think that there will be a game like Ultimate for a very long time. That’s for certain.”

“I agree, Riku. It’s to going to be a tough act to follow up on,” I add in before I look up at the ceiling and murmur some words, “It’s been a long time coming, Sora. You truly deserve that last spot, you really do. Have fun in the tourney and Smash Mansion, buddy.”

Stupid For You, Chapter 3 (Crygi, Jankie, Jaida x Nicky) - Metaluna

Summary: What better way to celebrate a successful opening day than a party? tw: underage drinking//drinking in general

On the way back home, Gigi turned onto the dirt road that would take her back the quickest. A road that was the exact opposite direction of Crystal’s house.

Crystal gasped. “You’re a liar.”

“Excuse me?”

“You said your house was on the way to mine. Clearly it’s not. Why’d you say it was?”

“Because I knew that you would say no if I told you it wasn’t on the way, and I like driving you. I like our conversations. And coffee. And of course, singing terribly together.”

“You’re absolutely right. I wouldn’t have let you. But I love talking to you, Gigi.” She smiled. “And I have no idea what you’re talking about. I am a great singer and you know it.”

Once they made it back to Gigi’s, she led Crystal up the stairs into her room. Gigi’s room was exactly what Crystal had imagined. It was decorated with an orange and aqua color scheme. It was a lot cleaner than Crystal’s room. There were posters of musicians that Crystal didn’t know. Above the bed, there were fairy lights with Polaroids. One corner of the room had a vanity with a large backlit mirror, and the other had a desk with plants perched on top.

“I guess you can do makeup at the desk? I think I have an extra mirror…” Gigi rifled through her vanity drawer. “Here we go.”

“Thanks!” Crystal took out a plethora of hair pins that kept perfectly messy space buns intact. She was left with a frizzy mess. “As much as I love looking like a lion, do you have a straightener I can borrow?”

“Are you sure?Lion King is one of the best movies.”

“I’m more partial to Hercules. ”

“If you say so. Let me go get it from the bathroom.”

Crystal examined the Polaroids. There were six in total. The first photo was taken with a girl who looked to be a few years older than Gigi that had striking similarities. Both girls had the same upturned nose and blonde hair. Immediately, Crystal recognized that they were on The Boardwalk at the park, the large Ferris wheel visible in the background. The second photo was Gigi with a woman that Crystal could only assume to be her mother, and was taken at the beach. Gigi and the woman were both relaxing on colorful towels under a large umbrella. The last Polaroid Crystal looked at was of the three women skating at Rockefeller Center during Christmastime.

“Having fun?”

Crystal jumped. “Is this your mom and sister?”

Gigi nodded. “I love them so much. Honestly they’re my best friends”

“It’s nice that you guys are so close.” Crystal felt a pang of jealousy. As an only child, she would never know the bond of a sibling, and while she and her parents were on good terms, she would hardly consider her parents friends, let alone best friends.

“Honestly me and Nora, my sister, weren’t close until our dad left our mom a few years back. I think it’s because we really only had each other to lean on.”

“Oh, Gigi, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry. He’s an asshole, and honestly, we’re better off without him.” Gigi forgot she was holding the straightener. “Oops, sorry. Here go you.”

After Gigi sat at her vanity and began brushing her perfect blonde hair, Crystal called, “I’m changing. Don’t look!”

Gigi could only imagine what Crystal looked like in her underwear. As soon as she found her mind wandering, she forced herself to stop and focused harder on getting ready.

After finishing a perfectly blended smokey eye, Gigi puckered her lips after putting on a layer of red gloss, and realized Crystal was standing behind her. It was hard for Gigi not to audibly gasp. She hadn’t seen Crystal’s hair straightened before, and while her curls were beautiful, she looked incredible with straight hair too. She was wearing a black and white striped crop top that hugged just the right places paired with a black skater skirt that had suspenders. Gigi was impressed at how clean Crystal’s makeup was. She opted for a blue cut crease and a matte red lip, a combination Gigi would never even think about trying. To finish the look, she had on necklaces, earrings, and bracelets that didn’t match each other, but somehow Crystal pulled off perfectly.

“You look beautiful,” Gigi finally said.

“Thanks,” Crystal curtseyed. “You too. Oh shit!”

“What?”

“We match.” Gigi looked at her reflection, and realized she was right. Her black and white jumpsuit perfectly complemented Crystal’s top.

Crystal grabbed Gigi’s hand. “Come here!” She pulled her to the full length mirror.

“What are we doing?”

“We have zero pictures together, which needs to change.” Crystal pulled out her phone and started taking mirror selfies. After posing for a few, Crystal went through her camera roll, taking time to look at each of them.

“Wow, you are so gorgeous. You could literally be a model. You’re so good at posing.”

Gigi smiled. “I used to practice when I was little.”

“Well, it paid off.”

Crystal sent the best one in the groupchat. It was already abuzz talking about the night’s festivities. The photo was met with high praises from everyone.

After she checked the time on her phone, Gigi said, “If we’re gonna get some alcohol, we should probably leave now.”

Crystal bit her lip. “How are we going to get any?”

Wordlessly, Gigi pulled an ID out of her wallet and handed it to Crystal, which stated that she was born in 1996. “I’ve had this since I was 16.”

“Oh wow, you rebel.”

Once inside the liquor store, Crystal was surprised at how many types of alcohol there were. She had no idea where to begin. There were shelves and shelves of bottles of all different shapes, sizes, and colors. She wondered how anyone picked which one to buy. If it was up to her, she would have bought the purple sparkly alcohol. She wasn’t even sure what it was, but it was pretty.

Gigi looked at her. “Any requests?”

“Gigi I have no idea what any of this is. Just something fruity and delicious.”

“Got it.”

Gigi settled on a fifth of coconut rum and some pineapple juice to mix. While walking past the cooler, she grabbed a six pack of hard black cherry lemonade for good measure.

Once they made it to Heidi’s apartment, the party was already in full swing. Music was playing so loud that its loud bass line echoed through the parking lot. Earlier that night, Heidi had told everyone to let themselves in. Heidi’s apartment was filled with people. It was much larger than Gigi anticipated. It was nicely decorated with a large living room, with plenty of space. At first, Gigi didn’t recognize any of her fellow partygoers. She heard Brita, but didn’t see her. As they made it further into the house, they found Heidi, right in front of the sound system the music was coming from. Gigi felt her chest vibrating.

“Hey, bitches!” Heidi hugged them the best she could while double fisting Whiteclaws.

“Do you have any cups?” Gigi tried to shout over the music.

“What?”

“Cups?”

“ What?”

Gigi pantomimed drinking.

“Oh! Kitchen.”

Once they made it into the kitchen, a voice screamed, “Oh my god!”

Brita pulled Gigi and Crystal into a hug. Gigi could only think about how nice Crystal smelled. Crystal looked slightly taken aback, since she didn’t know Brita well. But, let it go since Brita was probably on at least drink number three of the night.

“You’re both so hot!” Brita looked both of them up and down. “Maybe I do like girls! Wow, wow, I’m drunk.”

“Yes, yes you are,” Gigi said as Brita left the kitchen, going on about finding a girl to makeout with .

Gigi grabbed a red Solo cup and began pouring a drink. Because Crystal hadn’t drank before she barely poured a shot’s worth of alcohol in her cup. This was a contrast to her own cup, which was half rum and half pineapple juice. Gigi spotted a marker next to the cups. On hers, she wrote her name with some stars after it. After some thought, she decided to draw hearts on Crystal’s cup.

Gigi handed Crystal the cup, making sure that she would see the hearts. “Here, drink this.”

Crystal dramatically gasped. “You’re such a talented artist.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

As she took a drink, Crystal’s face contorted to a slight look of disgust. “It’s um. Strong.”

“You don’t have to drink it if you don’t like it.” Gigi held her hand out to take the cup.

Crystal took another drink. “The more I drink it, the more I like it.”

“That’s usually how alcohol works, babe.”

After walking around Heidi’s apartment, Crystal and Gigi eventually found their friends. They were all sitting on a large sectional in a corner of the living apartment where the music wasn’t blaring. Gigi was glad to be able to hear herself think. Jaida and Nicky were looking quite comfortable next to each other. Nicky whispered something in Jaida’s ear before grabbing her hand and leading her out of the room.

“Shit,” Jackie groaned. “Shit, shit, shit.”

“What is it?” Jan’s eyes were full of concern.

“Every single summer, Jaida meets one of the new girls, they hook up, and she gets way too invested. Every single summer she breaks her own heart, and I end up picking up the pieces. Every. Single. Time,“ Jackie lamented, taking a swig of vodka.

“Maybe it won’t be like that. Nicky seems like a nice girl,” Crystal said while taking a seat.

“That may be so, but I don’t think that Nicky has the same intentions that Jaida does. I love the girl but she’s an idiot.”

“Well,” Jan began. “Jaida’s a big girl, I think she can handle it herself. Let’s go check out the beer pong table.”

The kitchen table was pushed into the hallway where an intense game of beer pong was taking place. It was Widow and Heidi vs. Gigi’s coworkers, Dahlia and Rock.

There was one cup left, and it was Widow’s turn. Carefully, she aimed and threw the ball and landed it perfectly in the cup.

“Drink up, bitches!” Dahlia chugged the beer in the cup.

“Who’s next?” Heidi asked. “We’ve won the last three rounds.”

Crystal looked at Gigi, who at some point finished her drink and moved onto a lemonade. “Wanna?”

Gigi raised her and Crystal’s hands.

“Step on up, ladies!” Heidi said as she refilled the cups.

Widow went first. “Y’all are going down!”

“You wish.” Gigi’s expression was determined. She was awful at beer pong, but wasn’t about to let Crystal know that.

Widow’s ball landed in one of the cups with a plop right in front of Crystal. It was clear Crystal wasn’t well versed in the rules of beer pong, so Widow instructed, “Crystal, drink.”

Crystal nervously fished the ball out of the cup. She raised it to her nose and made a face.

“It’s not going to be good,” Gigi said. “Just warning you. Thankfully there’s not much in there. Don’t let it sit on your tongue. Drink it down.”

Crystal did as she was instructed. “My turn?” Gigi nodded.

Even though she tried to aim, Crystal was feeling the effects of the alcohol. The ball veered to the left, nearly hitting Jan. “Oops.”

“Good one,” Heidi teased as she sank a ball right in front of Gigi. “Drink up.”

Gigi also made a face when she drank the beer. “You’re out here getting the cheap shit, huh?”

“You try buying boujee shit when we barely make about minimum wage.”

Gigi couldn’t argue with that logic. She surprised herself by making a shot.

“I’m impressed,” Widow said while finishing her cup.

After a close game, each team had one cup left. Crystal failed to score anything. Thankfully, Gigi was having a good game for once and carried them to the end. Gigi’s shot was just wide.

“Get ready to lose, hookers,” Widow said confidently. She was so confident, she barely aimed and missed.

“It’s all you, Crys,” Gigi said. “You can do it.”

“I can do it.”

Crystal stood aiming her ball for at least thirty seconds.

“Today, Crystal,” Heidi said dramatically looking at her nails.

“Hold on!”

She took a few more seconds before tossing the ball. It landed in the cup with a plop. Jan, Jackie, and a few other spectators cheered.

“I did it!” Crystal slurred hugging Gigi.

“You did!”

“I wanna dance. Let’s go dance!” By this point, Crystal was extremely drunk. Gigi found it absolutely adorable, the way she slurred her words and thought very hard before speaking.

The group made their way into the living room. Another song that Gigi didn’t recognize was playing over the speakers. Jan began to grind against Jackie. Jackie was taken aback, but pulled her closer. Crystal looked at Gigi and raised an eyebrow. Gigi shrugged in return. A song that Gigi had heard a few times on the radio started.

“Oh my god, I love this song!” Crystal squealed, standing in front of Gigi starting to grind on her.

Gigi was shocked as Crystal’s hips rocked back and forth in front of her. Gigi grabbed onto Crystal’s waist, pulling her closer. As Crystal rubbed against her, Gigi could feel herself being turned on. When Crystal bent at the waist and started shaking her ass, the blonde thought she would drop dead on the dancefloor. Crystal turned her head at Gigi and smiled.

Do I kiss her? Is she just looking at me? What’s going on?!

Before she could think any further, Crystal turned back around as the song ended and pulled Gigi into a hug.

“I’m having so much fun!” Crystal exclaimed.

“How many drinks have you had tonight, Crys?”

“Umm,” She counted on her fingers. “One, two, three… Four. I think I’m done!”

“I think that’s a good idea.”

Crystal gasped and pointed at Jan and Jackie. They were in the middle of the makeshift dance floor with their lips intertwined. Jackie had a fistful of Jan’s ass while Jan’s hands were running up and down Jackie’s back.

“Holy shit!” Gigi was thinking about earlier when Jaida said that Jackie was straight.

Just then, Jaida and Nicky found Crystal and Gigi. They both looked disheveled, as if they had gotten dressed in a hurry. Jaida was pulling up her tube top, and Nicky was fixing her hair.

“Where have you two been?” Gigi raised an eyebrow.

“Mind your business,” Jaida warned.

The four girls watched Jan and Jackie, who had stopped kissing and were just looking into each other’s eyes. After noticing her friends, Jackie ran into the bathroom.

“Shit,” Jaida said, running after Jackie.

“Did I do something wrong?” Jan asked, tears welling her eyes.

“No, you didn’t do anything,” Gigi took her hand. “Let’s go outside.”

“Jackie, what the hell?” Jaida slammed the bathroom door behind her.

“I don’t know! Jaida, I’m drunk, she’s drunk… She just looked really pretty, and I don’t know what happened! Next thing I knew, my hands were on her ass and her tongue was down my throat!” Jackie slurred. “I’m straight! I don’t like girls!”

“Listen. I’ve seen you. You’ve been checking out Miss Jan every single day you’ve seen her. I don’t think that’s just gals being pals.”

“I’m not gay.”

“Jackie. We don’t have to talk about that right now but I really think you should–”

“Jaida, stop. I can’t do this right now.”

With that, Jackie stormed off in a hurry.

Gigi, Nicky, and Crystal managed to calm down Jan, who was near hysterics.

“Does she hate me?” Jan slurred. “She kissed me first!“

“No, Jan. I think that maybe Jackie doesn’t know how to process whatever it is that she is feeling,” Nicky reassured.

Gigi’s phone buzzed. It was Jaida.

Jackie’s freaking out. I’m taking her home. She doesn’t live too far away. I’ll be back.

They all sat with a crying Jan until Jaida showed up.

“Oh, chile,” Jaida began wrapped Jan in a hug. “It’s not you. I promise it isn’t. Jackie doesn’t know how to act when it comes to her emotions. I promise it’s not you.”

“Really?” Jan wiped her eyes. “How fucked is my makeup right now?”

“Pretty fucked. But let me fix it.” Nicky said, pulling a wipe from her purse.

“I’m not letting her ruin my night. Ladies, let’s go do shots!” Jan pulled a bottle of tequila out of her bag.

There were already slices of lime and a salt shaker set up in the kitchen. Because she was the only one sober enough to do so, Gigi poured the shots.

“Crystal,” Jan slurred. “Whatcha gotta do is you lick your hand and shake the salt on it. Then, ya lick the salt, then ya take the shot. It tastes bad, don’t let it sit in your mouth. Then ya suck the lime.”

“Act like it’s cough syrup,” Jaida recommended.

The four girls toasted their glasses, set them on the table, shot the tequila back, and sucked on the lime. Gigi didn’t think she was good at very many things, but she was good at shots. Everyone else made the universal face when doing shots, except for her.

“Crystal, you look like you went through all the stages of grief at once,” Nicky teased.

“That was gross.”

“You don’t drink it because it’s good,” Jaida said.

The rest of the night was filled with selfies, dancing, and for everyone but Gigi, more drinking. She didn’t remember the last time she had this much fun at a party, even if she did spend a good chunk of the night holding Jan’s hair back in the bathroom.

At about two AM, the party started to unwind.

“Ready to go babe?” Gigi asked an extremely drunk Crystal.

“Yeah I’m ready to go home.”

“It’s late, do you want to just spend the night at my house?”

“We’re gonna have a sleepover?”

“Yes, Crystal, we’re going to have a sleepover.”

After thanking Heidi for a great party, she managed to single handedly get Crystal into her Jeep. Gigi looked over at Crystal who at some point had fallen asleep. Once they made it back to her house, Gigi gently tapped Crystal’s shoulder.

“Okay, babe, we’re back.”

“Sleepover?”

After much protesting, Gigi managed to get Crystal to drink some water. She brought a bottle up to her room for good measure. Because she was a good friend, she removed Crystal’s makeup.

After rifling through her dresser, she gave Crystal an old cheerleading shirt and some shorts. “The bathrooms right over down–”

Crystal began stripping in Gigi’s bedroom. As much as she tried to look away, she couldn’t. Crystal’s body was much curvier than her own, but Gigi couldn’t help but stare at how beautiful she was… How beautiful her breasts were… After changing, Crystal plopped onto Gigi’s bed and fell asleep. Because she had a queen sized bed, Gigi decided she could share and it wouldn’t be weird.

The next day, Crystal woke up cuddling Gigi. She didn’t remember parts of the night. She remembered beer pong, dancing, Jan crying, Jackie running away, and shots. Her head was pounding, and everything felt too bright. She got up and found the bottle of water. She pulled out her phone to text her ride. She couldn’t let Gigi give her another ride home.

Gigi must have heard her, as she woke up. “Morning, sunshine. How are you feeling?”

“Not good. My head’s pounding.”

“Awe, baby’s first hangover,” Gigi teased. “Are you hungry?”

“No, eating is pretty much the last thing I want to do right now. I have someone coming to get me soon. Also, did you check the group chat?”

“No, why?”

Gigi sat on her bed with Crystal as they went through all the photos that were sent that night. The blurry photos said it all. Gigi’s favorite was a group photo right before shots.

Crystal’s phone buzzed. “My ride’s here!”

“I’ll walk you down.”

A truck was in Gigi’s driveway. A blonde boy with a shaggy beard came out.

“Ryan!” Crystal exclaimed, running to hug the boy. “Gigi, this is my boyfriend Ryan. Ryan, this is my coworker, Gigi.”

Boyfriend.

Gigi’s stomach dropped.

“I’ve heard so much about you!”

“Nice to meet you,” she mumbled.

“Thanks for taking care of her.” Ryan kissed Crystal on the cheek.

“No problem. I’ll see you tomorrow, Crystal.”

Gigi closed the door without waiting for a response.

WIP - Irongate

Many fairy tales begin with a child. Broken, orphaned, rejected, then found by a seemingly magic being that will grant them any wish. Many fairy tales, and this is no exception. Dreams become reality, but there is usually a price, terms, conditions. And dreams can be twisted into nightmares. This is a fairy tale, but not everything is as it seems.

Previews: Chapter One / Chapter Two

Genres: Science Fiction, Mystery, Adventure. Elements of horror and quite a bit of action, plus a lot of inspiration and reference to fantasy, folklore, and mythology.

Themes: Growing up, found family, parents, real monsters.

Warnings: Violence and death. One character is seen abused by her mother in the beginning. Some mild swearing.

Kaya Cade remembers a time when the world was young and days lasted a thousand years. Just over a decade later and those days seem light-years away. She finds herself in a tedious job having in that decade made a complete mess of her life, her friendships… There is no magic in this world. No adventure.

That’s what she thought until, it turns out, faeries are real and plucking out the eyes of any who look on them without permission, as she now has. The only ray of hope is a rumor that a witch lives in a lighthouse on a hill near Irongate, but when Kaya goes there this ‘witch’ is someone she betrayed in the past. Will she put aside her grievance to help solve a mystery in the present?

Meanwhile, there is a girl who won’t sleep until she’s exacted revenge, a powerful man determined to cover up his mistakes, and a Queen who sees it as the natural order that parents should die to make way for their children.

Irongate is a story about friendships, family, growing up, hidden people zealously guarding their privacy, and about a world undergoing great change. Things that were once only dreamed about are suddenly becoming real, but twisted into nightmares by the irresponsible and reckless. Monsters hunt men, while in the shadows future Gods lie teething.

Irongate is a sci-fi adventure mystery set in a contemporary-ish world - think X-Files/Doctor Who/Scooby Doo/Ghostbusters (more 1984 than 2016 in terms of character and humor).

Characters:

Pythia - AI created by Meridiem, meant to predict rises and falls in share prices, but has grown far beyond her original programming.

Tenley Tych - Perpetually angry tween. Tenley’s mother made her learn martial arts practically from the day she could crawl. And now, after meeting a strange woman in the woods, she’s become pound-for-pound one of the deadliest warriors of all time.

Titania - Proclaims herself Queen of the Forest, and the hunt. Clearly not human, with her deep black eyes and skin that constantly shifts in color and pattern.

Lilian & Ella - Titania’s lieutenants. Not much is known about them, but it seems they were orphans who ran away together. They were found by the Queen and became Changelings and remain fanatically loyal to this day.

Jennifer Airhart - Lives in a lighthouse on top of a hill. Brainy, very good at taking things apart and sometimes putting them back together, but lives in her own world and would prefer if everyone else stayed out.

Kaya Cade - Punk, guitarist, and thief. Kaya’s strained relationship with her family led to her taking a mean turn in her teens. Now as an adult she’s realized she’s been taking her frustrations out on the wrong people and is trying to change for the better. But is the past willing to let her go?

Doctor Jana Sarkis - Biologist, Geneticist, and all round super woman. Jana knows her employers will do all they can to exploit and profit from her work, but still believes it will benefit all humanity in the long-run.

Oshiro Sayuri - Runs a General Store and drummer in The Killer Aqua Bunnies. Selfless and kind, but is she hiding a dark side?

The Dibbles - Francis Daramy and Chauncey ‘Chance’ Delainy. They are cops (good cops; not bad). Maybe a little too soft on certain miscreants.

Groups/Factions/Places:

Meridiem - Shadowy Mega-Corporation with a hand in many things, and will go to extreme lengths to cover-up their mistakes.

Irongate - Former mining town now home to a university and severl technology and R&D companies.

FT Rare Pairs Day 3 : Present

Rare Pair Week Day 3: Present Pairing: Lyon Vastia x Juvia Lockser Inspired by: @sobatsu‘s headcanon: click here Dedicated to: @i-write-fanfics-to-procrastinate @sobatsu and all the other Lyvia stans

Writer’s Corner: It’s a little late, I know. It’s my first time to create a Lyvia one-shot/fanfic. I’m trying to capture the early Lyon who was soooo in love with Juvia. lol. Also, I’ll probably post later what happened after this ‘exchange gift’.

Lyon couldn't even remember how long he has been walking on that pavement. It seemed like it grew longer and longer with every step. But one thing he knew though was that his body hurt like hell. Like he was thrown around the room as if he was paper-light. Stupid ogre. It was such an easy job but he didn't understand why it took him too long to finish it and thus feeling like his own bones were about to break. Okay, maybe he knew why. If he wasn't too busy running after a replica of Juvia's hat he could have finished the job in a jiffy. The stupid giant ogre took a liking to his Juvia hat and made it his mission to chew on the poor Juvia merchandise. And he just had the head-cover delivered to him last week.

That ugly ogre!" He stomped both feet. The anger that was just babbling up inside him exploded, seeing the male version of Juvia's hat chewed on, stepped on, and having holes in them that needed patches. It was practically useless but he held onto it. Lyon was regretful the most on the fact that he was going to pass by Fairy Tail.

"Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!"

He had another explosion of anger. Stomping on what used to be a male version of Juvia's hat. He ignored the weird looks passersby were giving him because apparently, he had the perfect plan. He was going to stroll into the Fairy Tail building, look for his favorite water-mage, donning his new hat matching Juvia's. She was going to realize how good they looked together, in that couple's hat, and eventually she would finally admit to the idea that he was the only man for her. Plain and simple. Except now he didn't have the hat he needed to go matchy-matchy with his Juvia.

Lyon only realized then that he was making such a scene when a kid hid behind his mother asking if 'that guy'' – meaning him – was crazy. The mother and son turned and walked the opposite side, afraid to get near the scary crazy guy.

Lyon started apologizing to the passersby and laughed it off. But everyone was still avoiding him. They were still throwing him dirty looks. Lyon calmed himself down and asked himself, "Maybe… maybe we are acting a little crazy." He fixed his collar and his posture to show everyone that he was a fine lad and not some uncivilied fool spouting 'stupids' everywhere. He was far from it. Lyon Vastia was a fine, young gentleman – the ace of Lamia Scale – who was now marching the path down to Magnolia store to get himself a new Juvia hat. Chest out. Back straight. And shining with that new hopeful aura.

"The gods do exist!" He declared to the cashier who just told Lyon that she just sold to him the last Juvia hat they had in stock. "You are a life-saver!" He was so happy that he just grabbed the old woman by the shoulder and kissed her on the cheek. He strutted out from the shop, carrying bags of Juvia merchandise he was about to add to his collection: Juvia's heart-filled umbrella; the new 'Juvia punk' poster; her 'swimsuit Juvia' figurine, which he had to hide at the bottom of the plastic bag; and his most prized possession, the male-version of Juvia hat. Finally, the plan was back in motion.

Lyon snorted as he brushed past the the 'Gray and Juvia' figurine holding hands while doing that familiar attack that got him beat at the Grand Magic Games. He might have 'accidentally' bumped against the cabinet that housed the figurines, sending the merchandise on the floor. But they weren't made of breakable materials and simply bounced on the wooden ground. Lyon kind of wished they were breakable though. He also bought the butterfly-printed t-shirt without knowing it was actually 'Gray' merchandise. Lyon had his eyes set on the guild hall across the shop and became oblivious of the young girl rushing to the aide of her eighty year old Nana who just fainted behind the counter.

He went his merry way to the Fairy Tail guild building. When he arrived at the doors of the hall, Lyon scrambled inside his paper bags and pulled out the dark blue, velvet hat, pushed it down on his head, his spiky hair pointing downwards around the rim of the hat. His pale blue hair looked tamed beneath the Juvia-matching hat. Then he kicked open the doors and burst into the guild, declaring his arrival, "My Juvia, your prince has arrived!"

"L-l-lyon-sama?!"

Juvia spat out the light blue concoction that she was drinking, spraying the liquid right into the face of the youngest Strauss, flecks of lavender petals stuck on her forehead, nose and on her bottom lip. The eldest Strauss, who was just passing by, giggled at the poor state of her sister. After another round of giggles, she finally stopped and tried to pluck the petals off Lisanna's face along with Juvia, the cause of it.

"Oh, hi Lyon." Mira acknowledged. She placed the tray on the table where Juvia and Lisanna were. "Are you looking for Gray? He's out on a job." She informed while she took the spot next to her younger sister.

Lyon scoffed at the barmaid. Why would he even look for that brat? And so what if he was out on a job –whaaat? The other, less impressive ice-make mage was out of the guild? And most importantly, Juvia was actually here for his taking?

He scurried over where the water-mage, momentarily forgetting about his 'cold and composed' image, and dropped the paper bags on the table. He claimed the spot right next to the escaping water-mage, making googly eyes at her.

"J-juvia," not a good start. Lyon cleared his throat and started again, way savvier this time and while enclosing Juvia's hand within his. "Juvia–"

"–Wow, you went shopping?" Mira poked around the paper bags on the table which had the logo of the merchandise store across the guild. "Did you get my items?"

Lyon glared at the woman, wondering why he would waste jewels on her items when he could buy the entire Juvia collection. But since he was a gentleman, he kept his mouth shut.

And has no one even noticed his Juvia hat? Anyone?

"Juvia, I came bearing gifts."

Lyon pulled out a long cloth out of no where and draped the same over Juvia's shoulders. Looking closer, it was identical to the white long jacket Lyon was wearing.

"Now, we look like a couple, don't we?"

Lyon threw his arms around the surprised water-mage and pulled her in a tight embrace. Pressing his cheek against hers, a fool's smile plastered on his ecstatic face.

"Lyon and Juvia." He sang with so much adoration.

Juvia seemed to have lost her sanity as she kept saying "L-lyon a-and J-j-juvia" in a trance. Hence, a nosy take-over mage took it upon herself to interject.

"Where are our gifts?"

To Lyon's dismay. He glared at one of Fairy Tail's strongest mages who was pouting at him. As if Mirajane Strauss would ever shudder under those intense black eyes.

"I brought gifts for my princess." He clarified before snuggling against the still seemingly dazed Juvia, taking pleasure in the proximity. Juvia was so close Lyon could smell her scent – Aqua Kiss. He had the same one he got from the merchandise shop across the hall.

"But in fairness, you two do look like a real couple."

For the first time since Lyon entered that rowdy guild, he finally heard something pleasing – aside from the water-mage saying 'Lyon and Juvia' over and over again.

"With that matching hat and jacket. Definitely, a real couple, right Lisanna?"

Lisanna wondered why her sister roped her into that conversation. "R-right." She responded awkwardly, still worried about Juvia who seemed to have been trapped between the strong arms of Lamia Scale's Lyon's. She waved a hand in front of Juvia who didn't respond. Poor Juvia seemed to have lost it.

"Hear that, Juvia?" He pulled his arms away, grasping Juvia by her arms and turned her towards him. "We're like a real couple."

But Juvia had nearly the same expression on her face with the one she had back at the Grand Magic Games – less disgusted but repulsed no less.

Then, everything just went downhill from there.

Lyon didn't know what was happening then. All he saw was a giant figure about to fall on the table where they were sitting at. Then, parts which once composed a table was on the floor. And so were his merchandise. His merchandise!

Lyon kicked the giant muscular man off the ground and hoped against all hopes that his newly bought Juvia-merchandise wasn't crashed underneath his enormous weight. And that one thing he was worried about above else was the 'Bikini Juvia' figurine he spent most of his jewels, and honestly, his fortune. Lyon's hands quivered as he reached out for his merchandise, when Elfman stood up from the floor and went back to the chaos he came from. He slowly peeled off what used to be the paper bags that housed the items he bought from the shop.

He was wrong. There were no gods. And if there were, gods were really cruel creatures. His nightmare became a reality because nothing remained of his Juvia collectibles but remnants.

Why did they have to make the 'Juvia Bikini' figurine out of breakable materials? Just, why?

"L-l-lyon-sama…"

"You uncivilized imbeciles!"

His clothes flew to the air and a very naked Lyon disappeared into the rolling scuffle. He was so into deep his path of revenge that he didn't notice his Juvia hat flying around the air. Stepped on, wet, burnt, frozen until finally it was Lyon's boots, as he landed on his feet, which smashed the iced hat into pieces.

"No!" His scream was so agonizing that it even stopped the fray that he was in earlier. He fell on his knees, trying to grab the pieces of his Juvia hat on the floor. The lady from the store said, it was the last stock for this month. "H-h-how… c-c-can we be… c-c-couples now?"

In his rage, he managed to freeze everyone at the Fairy Tail guild including the guild master. Which wasn't probably wise. After Lyon somehow accepted his fate and finally calmed down, but mostly because he just realized he froze the water-mage too, he apologized to Master Makarov and unfroze everyone, except for Elfman. He said he deserved it. The only consolation he got from this trip were: one, he got to see Juvia, two he got to spend time with her because the inferior ice-make wasn't around and lastly, he got to have Juvia walk him to the train station and send him off.

They talked on the way, mostly him and with Juvia just nodding and smiling from time to time. She was still shy around him, which he took as a good sign. When a biker almost hit Juvia, Lyon jumped into action, pulling the unaware water-mage into a protective embrace. He took note of how she was so flustered, standing so close to him, just a breath away from a kiss. She pushed him immediately and kept her distance until they reached the station.

Magnolia Train Station wasn't too crowded that day. If it was Lyon's choice, he'd want to spend more time with the water-mage. Just a passing conversation would be enough. But fate wasn't on his side. Over the speakers, the announcer said his train was leaving in ten minutes. Out of generosity, or most likely out of guilt and pity, Juvia walked with him onto the platform, glaring at the passersby who were murmuring about them being a cute couple. Juvia said goodbye first, to Lyon's dismay, and apologized on behalf of her guild.

"Don't worry about it, Juvia. At least, I got to spend time with you."

His brain was screaming at him, 'don't even think about saying it' but he did anyways. "I-i-it's like a date or something."

"Eh?"

Juvia didn't look comfortable with what he said. Lyon coughed into his fist and cleared his throat.

"A-a-anyways, thank you for seeing me off." He turned around to step into the railcar but Juvia's hand stopped him.

"Lyon-sama…" She was looking at her shoes or his or maybe the floor, Lyon wasn't sure. She was fidgeting, looking like fighting an internal battle. "P-p-please… please accept this!"

Without warning, Juvia pulled her own hat off her head and pushed it down Lyon's, making his white spiky hair on top disappear while others stick out of the rim.

"It's the least Juvia could do."

As much as he liked that gesture – it was his freaking dream – but something didn't sit well with him.

"It's okay, Juvia." He said regretfully, taking the hat off and returning it to the water-mage. "I can just get another one." He reasoned.

"Juvia insists…"

Lyon's heart somersaulted at what appeared to be a romantic development between him and Juvia. He felt heady as he finally realized that Juvia was giving him something she owned.

Get yourself together you stupid ice-mage. Don't fait now!

"It was Juvia's guild mates who ruined your hat, after all."

Her concern pulled the corners of his mouth into a wide smile.

"Then, don't mind if I do keep it." He said as he fixed the hat on top of his head.

Juvia seemed relief about his acceptance.

"But how about you?"

For the first time that day, Juvia finally gave him her bright smile. He swore his soul escaped his body witnessing that bright, lovely smile. He wasn't even sure how he was still standing.

"Juvia could find another."

"Then, will you accept this?"

Lyon once again pulled the jacket out of thin air, the one he offered to Juvia which she refused insistently, and draped it over Juvia's shoulders. He saw her initial surprise and before she could return the jacket matching his, Lyon jumped into the carriage as the train started.

"See you soon, Princess!"

He waved her goodbye as he declared to the world that he will be back for her again. Juvia pulled a weird expression. Good thing he didn't see it. Lyon settled into his seat, smiling at himself. He had Juvia's hat; not only an imitation or a replica of it but the very one Juvia used. In some culture, that would have meant something big, like commitment. He knew she was just being nice. She was clear on the fact that it was a gesture of apology. He wasn't going to fool himself. Lyon was too smart for that. But it didn't mean he wasn't going to enjoy that moment, this day. It really felt like a date. His heart skipped a beat at the thought. Yes, if people asked, especially Gray, he'd tell them it was a date.

Too bad he didn't get a goodbye kiss.

"Mom, that guy's hat look like yours."

"Don't point, Marcus. That's rude."

Lyon peered over the other section where the noise was coming from.

"Why is a man like him wearing such a girly hat?"

Lyon felt a vein popped.

"My girlfriend gave it to me." He explained. It wasn't like anyone was going to do some fact-check on what he just said, right?

Silly kid! What did he know? He probably didn't even have a girlfriend. 'So do you', the logical part of his brain reminded him. Well, he didn't know that! The other part barked back.

"Oi, ma! The weird guy earlier has a girlfriend?"

Looking closer, Lyon realized it was the same mother and son who accused him of being crazy earlier. He fixed his posture to appear more dignified. It was no use since the mother had already taken her son to the other section, far away from Lyon. Well, at least, no one's going to disturb him now. But before that, he needed some more jobs to work on and jewels to earn. He needed to restock on his Juvia collection which would surely cost him a fortune.

Glass slippers: not even once

This episode introduces an idea that will get explored a fair few times in series down the road: the fairy tale episode. Cinderella is a particularly popular one, because it’s a simple story that little girls can imagine themselves in and there’s a lot of room to play with the narrative. It’s hardly a revolutionary idea for fiction, but it’s still fun to see how Precure plays with it, and the spin in this episode is particularly unusual for manifesting in two different ways. Let’s explore!

The Plot

Milk decides to try copying down the story of Cinderella for writing practice, as she plans to write her own novel a la Komachi, and copying a book is apparently a good way to study story structure. However, she gets bored copying it verbatim, so she decides to put her own spin on the narrative, portraying the cures as the characters. Nozomi is Cinderella, Komachi is the evil mother, Rin and Karen are the evil sisters, and Urara is the witch (no fairy godmother here). Coco fills the role of the prince at the ball and Nuts is another nobleman. All of the characters are strangely self-aware, except for Nozomi. They know the story of Cinderella, they know they’re characters in it, they’re basically going through the motions as the story dictates. When Urara shows up to give Nozomi her magical makeover, she winds up transforming her into other fictional characters first before she gets it right.

Once she’s at the ball, Nozomi trips and falls, getting the attention of Prince Coco, who in turn dances with her. Nuts also approaches Komachi and asks her to dance, commenting that it’s just the kind of story they’re in. Karen and Rin have an exchange where they ask who Coco is dancing with despite both of them knowing exactly who it is. Urara shows up in a gown, and everyone knows she was supposed to be the witch. Did I mention it was weird? And to reiterate, Milk is writing this, these aren’t the real Nozomi and co. transported into the story. Milk has written them to be self-aware. What a strange book. Anyway, she has Nozomi trip and fall and they all end up in a pile on the ground and that’s where her story leaves off when she’s interrupted by the real girls knocking on her door. She hides her writing from them and tries to find somewhere more private to write, but as soon as she steps outside, Bunbee confronts her and decides to suck everyone into the world of her story.

The next thing they know, they’re inside Milk’s Cinderella! But they don’t bother acting out the story, they see Bunbee holding Milk hostage and he turns the chandelier into a Kowaina, so they transform as well.

The Kowaina is able to use reflected light as laser beams to attack the girls so the team scatters. Dream and Rouge focus on fighting Bunbee to try to rescue Milk, but the kowaina keeps getting in their way, so Lemonade, Mint, and Aqua manage to hold it off while the other two get the jump on Bunbee. They free Milk, and then get upset at collateral damage to the castle being caused by their fight. Bunbee taunts that he’ll destroy this world like he destroyed the Palmier Kingdom, but all the girls respond by kicking his ass and the kowaina’s ass and then Dream performs Crystal Shoot to defeat it, and Bunbee flees.

After they detransform, the clock strikes midnight and they realize they’re still in the story, so they all run to get “home”. On the way down the stairs, Nozomi trips and one of her glass slippers flies off, opening a portal back to Natts House.

Somehow the glass slipper came back with them, and they remember that whoever it fits is supposed to marry the prince. Nozomi and Coco share a glance but before she can put it on, Milk LEAPS into the air and lands inside the shoe, claiming it as a perfect fit. Nozomi starts to chase her, demanding her shoe back, while Karen, Komachi, and Rin pick up the scattered pages of Milk’s manuscript. They take umbrage with her portrayal of them in the story, and the episode closes on Nozomi, Karen, and Rin all chasing her up the stairs.

The Analysis

It’s certainly a fun episode, a nice uptick from the last few. The spins on Cinderella are clever and funny, and this cast really makes it work. I do find it weird just how self-aware they seem to be in Milk’s story. One time in high school (probably around the time this show aired actually) I did a creative writing assignment which completely shattered the fourth wall, but my jokes were more absurdist than this. The characters act as though they’re the real Nozomi, Rin, etc who have been transported into the story and know they have to act it out, rather than like they’re characters within the narrative watching as the events unfold. I don’t really understand why it was composed this way, it doesn’t make sense from Milk’s perspective to have them be self-aware and make comments on their knowledge of the story, that sort of gag is much more suited for the characters being sucked into the story, which they did in the second half of the episode anyway. Structurally it may have been better to have them absorbed into the story early in the episode, play out the tale of Cinderella until the mid-point, and then Bunbee reveals himself or something and the rest goes as normal.

Regardless of whether the gags make sense in context, though, they are hilarious. The wicked stepmother being played by the nicest girl of the bunch is peak irony, and Rin and Karen the frequent head-butters as the stepsisters makes me laugh, although they didn’t really play up their little rivalry. None of them take their roles very seriously, which adds to the comedy. The highlight for me has to be when Urara shows up and transforms Nozomi. She cycles through a couple different outfits before she gets it right:

The most notable ones are Momotaro and Princess Kaguya, who are the subjects of famous Japanese fairy tales.

She also gets turned into a bear, a clown, and even a monster! I enjoy the self-awareness as well. Urara showing up at the ball despite and being called out by the others as the witch, the frequent comments about this all being “how the story goes” or what have you. My favorite exchange is when Karen asks who’s dancing with the Prince and Rin tells her it’s Cinderella, the title character, and Karen responds that she knows but she has to stick to the script. I don’t know why but this is peak comedy to me, and my greatest wish is that it be the actual characters who are saying this and not just Milk writing.

The payoff to this, however, is the revelation at the end when Karen, Komachi, and Rin look at Milk’s manuscript and realize exactly how she’s cast them. Even if Karen and Milk have a good relationship, she doesn’t like being exploited in this way, and when Milk remarks that an angry Karen is scarier than an evil sister, she and Rin lose their minds and start to chase her. Komachi, in typical fashion, is upset but not angry. I have said it before but I love the character interactions in this show. They always manage to play off each other wonderfully, and they seamlessly and believably transition between comedy and seriousness.

Curiously, Milk doesn’t insert herself into the story for whatever reason. You would expect her to place herself in the role of Cinderella so she could get the handsome prince, but she seems more content to play god with her friends, and especially to make Nozomi suffer.... although the worst thing she actually does is have her trip and break things a lot. Considering she says she wants to be with Coco romantically, she doesn’t show it much. She fantasizes about it a little bit when she’s in his presence but on some level she seems to realize he’s a better match for Nozomi. I think it’s telling that she automatically pairs up Coco with Nozomi and Komachi with Nuts even in her fantasy.

The villain plot of this episode is rather lackluster. Sucking the girls into the world of Cinderella and then destroying it isn’t as effective as sucking them into Komachi’s novel, which was an actual dangerous setting that Arachnea enhanced in that instance. It doesn’t benefit Bunbee in any way to have them in this setting, and that’s disappointing. I wish they could have better justified it. It does allow for a pretty good fight, but it’s not any better than battles they’ve fought in the real world. My favorite part is when Cure Rouge mule kicks Bunbee, and then a sequence where everyone gets single or pair attacks in on him where their animation is really warped because it’s going fast.

It’s not bad, you can only see this if you freeze-frame, but boy is it weird. And there’s some other animation oddities in this episode. I’m not sure if I’ve brought up before their habit of drawing a shot from far away that has low detail, and either zooming in on it or starting up close and zooming out, but the point is, when they do this, it really enhances how low-quality the drawing is. And there’s a shot of Bunbee that’s drawn this way for some reason. It’s zoomed in on him as a person, he transforms, and THEN the camera zooms out. I can only assume they originally blocked this shot out as being zoomed out always, because otherwise there’s no reason that his human model should be as low-res as it is.

Here’s a fun little bit of continuity I picked up on that relates to Bunbee as well. If you remember way back in episode 14, he used a missile attack that broke Mint Reflection, and they had to team up to deflect it. Well he uses it again here, but this time, Komachi has Mint Shield at her disposal, which we know is stronger, and it’s able to block the missile completely without anyone else’s assistance.

Additionally, one little oddity I picked up on is, of all things, a reused piece of background music! During the scene where Urara-as-the-witch appears to Nozomi-Cinderella, they cue her in with the track “Strange Occurrence” from the FWPC soundtrack. I haven’t noticed any other instances of them using backing tracks from outside this season’s OST, so this sticks out to me.

I want to say a quick piece about these ball gowns that they’re all wearing and then I’ll wrap this up.

If you have a keen eye and a good memory, you might remember Nozomi’s dress and Coco’s suit as being first seen in her brief fantasy in episode 34:

The others are new.... sort of. Chronologically speaking this is their first appearance, but they also show up in the movie which premiered a week after this episode’s broadcast, and I’m reasonably certain, because of how long movies take to produce, they were designed for that first and then incorporated back into the show. Reusing costume designs isn’t a new phenomenon, I pointed out way back in FWPC that they reused the Romeo and Juliet costumes in the dream episode, I just wanted to point it out.

This was a fun episode with some great gags in it, but while they tried to put an original spin on the concept of placing your characters in another established fictional work, the execution fell short of its potential and keeps the episode from being as good as it could have been.

My next review will be the Yes! Precure 5 movie! I always allow myself to indulge on movies, and this one will be no exception, so in order to make it the best review possible, it’s going to take several days of work to get done. If anyone would like to draw any of these or use them in a fan game feel free to do so. All I ask is credit for the idea. By the way I came up with most of the ideas before Gen V was even an idea.
