So you wanna be a king (pt6)
Or, at the least, you want very much to cosplay one, and you have put too much time and energy into this to stop now. Let’s finish this costume.
Tumblr media
Part 6: The Adventuring Cap (and also hair and some makeup)
The rest of the tutorials are here: cloak, tunic, pants/boots, bracers/pouch, accessories, and as always, I’m a novice cosplayer making all this up as I go along, so feel free to ignore me or steal my ideas and run.
There’s one last piece to this costume. Something important. Something that unifies Graham across the years from 1983 to 2015: his adventuring cap.
Tumblr media
Even when he has his crown on, that old hat isn’t far away. So let’s get into it.
Tumblr media
But before we can actually start sewing a hat, we need to talk...hair. Because that will probably alter the hat size.
Hair (and also make-up):
Should you be blessed with the slightly curly black hair Graham has, then that’s fantastic!
I do not have such hair.
Tumblr media
You remember how hot this costume is? At least three shirts, one and a half pants, a cloak, a cowl, bracers, and knee high boots? Let’s make it worse by adding a wig.
I buy all my wigs from Arda Wigs--I love that quality and those nice prices. I’m the sort of person who pulls the wig out of the bag, fluffs it up with hairspray (got2b glued is a miracle in a can), and runs, but should you want to try heat sculpting, they’re great wigs for that too.
Since I’m revealing all my secrets, this particular wig is a Benny in Deep Brown (when I bought it it was called Natural Black, but I think it’s the same color). It’s warmer than their pure black, which I wanted for this sunshine boy. https://arda-wigs.com/products/benny-classic?variant=27836199174
Tumblr media
Incidentally, while we’re here, some quick make-up things:
If you can’t grow your own beard, spray some hairspray on your chin and sideburn patches, take an old tube of mascara (the older and weaker the more control you have--gosh that sounds mean), and build up your own with downward brush strokes. A little goes a shockingly long way--I tend to overdo it myself. Use an eyebrow wand brush to shape the beard and make it look more natural. Seal with more hairspray, maybe a touch of setting powder.
For the freckles, I smear a thin layer of eyeshadow primer across nose and cheekbones, and then go ham with a marker eyeliner in dark brown. Seal it with a touch of setting powder. I promise, it will go absolutely nowhere, even in the hot RenFest July sun, unless you yourself rub it. (I carry both beard and freckles makeup tubes in my pouch, just in case.)
Tumblr media
Okay, fine, we’re done stalling. You want the hat, so let’s do it.
Hat time!
First, vocab lesson! Repeat after me: bycocket. That’s the name of your hat. It’s a medieval cap popular among men, women, nobility, and business classes. And also, yes, with Robin Hood too.
http://honorbeforevictory.com/14th-c-embriodered-bycocket-cap-of-maintenance-with-a-split-loop-seam-tutorial/ - I found my template from this page and scaled it up. Other Robin Hood hat tutorials will also likely suit, but this is my semi-tutorial, so this is what I used.
I bought what looks like less than a yard of some light blue denim and some dark blue denim. I wanted the stiffness of the fabric to help hold the triangular shape, thus, the denim. I also happened to have a large quantity of semi-stiff orange felt for some reason, which I used as a core strengthener, but this core is almost certainly unnecessary. The hat keeps its shape really well once it’s on your head--no wonder it was so popular. Feel free to skip the core if you want.
Grab your measuring tape, plonk your wig on your head, and measure where the hat will sit. I got 24″ around. Feel free to make tests with that boundless scrap from the rest of this cosplay to get the size you want. My shape is 14.5″ long, and 11″ from its highest tip to its brim. Don’t forget to add half an inch of hemming space to your pattern (which in my case is made of scraps of paper taped together because I Am Cheap).
Tumblr media
Test your samples, adjust the pattern as necessary to make sure you’re happy with the brim length and how it sits.
Tumblr media
At this point, I made another one of those choices. For some reason, I intentionally transposed the colors, putting the darker color for the main body and the lighter color for the brim. I don’t know why.
The following tutorial will get confusing if you look only at the colors. I didn’t have a lot of images of the process, and I felt like redoing the hat with the correct color order this week. Because I could. So, ignore the colors as some pictures are old and some are new, and look at the text instead. For reference, all things will be referred to via this image terminology:
Tumblr media
Your top color will be cut exactly to the pattern size you like (with that .5″ hem margin, as usual). Your brim color, however, gets an additional half inch on the bottom, where you wear it. For a visual, like this:
Tumblr media
This way, you can fold the brim over the rest of your hat sandwich (...I’ll explain that, hang on), to sew a video-game-clean line.
Cut two identical shapes from each color, not forgetting that extra half inch on the brim bottom pieces. Sew them along the half inch hemline, so that you have two (three if you’re making a core) separate triangles, open at the bottom since that’s, y’know, where your head goes. They’re kinda like little tents.
Take your scissors and cut out tiny triangles close to, but not into, the hem stitch at the top curve, so that you can poke a smooth arc into the top (see visual below). Iron all hems flat. Take your top piece and turn it inside out, with the hem sitting inside. The core (if you’re making one) and your brim will remain inside-out looking, because that’s how you’ll build your hat sandwich.
Tumblr media
It’ll look like this. I stuffed the core piece inside the top piece, then shoved the brim piece into the core piece. All three pieces are tightly, cleanly, stacked together. It’s a hat sandwich! Stitch the hats together in key places so they don’t shift--like at the top of the arc, and in a few places along the hemlines.
Starting at the hemline in the back, fold the extra half inch from the brim piece up, curl it over itself just a smidge so your line stays nice and clean, pin, and hand stitch the top and brim together.
Tumblr media
It’s a bit tricky to get a photo of what it looks like, but once it’s all done and you fold up the brim, the stitches will be hidden, giving you that nice clean edge.
Tumblr media
Should you be so inclined, at this point you could get fancy with embroidery (that split loop stitch from the bycocket tutorial is one I eventually want to add), or determine a nice way to add the trim to the brim. Which I haven’t yet so...you’re on your own.
(Incidentally, if you’re in a hurry and you have one fabric choice like a sturdy felt, or maybe you’re doing Ch1Graham and don’t want to deal with this double-color nonsense, you can always go with a single sheet method. Cut the usual two triangles of your single sheet, sew them together like normal, but stop sewing when you get to the fold of the brim. That’s about 4.5″ along the back for me. Turn the whole hat inside out, so the nice hem is along the top, pin and sew the back flap that you had left unstitched, and when you fold up the brim, the ugly hem is hidden inside. A visual example is here:
Tumblr media
For the feather, I chose an ostrich feather because A: It’s huge and flouncy and bouncy and I like that, and B: ....it’s what the craft store had at the time. Because I figured I’d need to eventually replace it over time and wear, I did loose ugly stitchwork just under the brim, so I can unpick it and replace it as needed.
Tumblr media
And with that, my friend, you are A Whole Entire King.
Go memorize some addenda, go act with bravery and compassion and wisdom, go make friends with some squirrels, and please watch out for fairy tale obsessed goblins.
Always seek adventure~!
Tumblr media
(And that’s all for the cosplay how to semi-tutorial series! I hope it was helpful! If you have questions, feel free to DM me. I’m happy to help you look your best! At this point, that’s my last post on this topic unless someone asks for how I made the crown. 👑 Let me know if you want that too~)

Dancing Away With My Heart // Shawn Mendes *Assistant Series* Part 5
Description: As Shawn and Y/n’s relationship grows they really start to fall in love with one another. Being his plus one for the wedding makes Shawn realizes a lot of things. Just in one simple moment. I guess taking that assistant job was what they both needed.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
Tumblr media
A/n: not much to say. other than this is not well edited and did not check my grammar. things are gonna get steamy soon. or maybe messy. I dunno hehe.
〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️
“Rise and shine sleeping beauty.” I felt Shawn’s hot breath whisper into my ear. It was a funny feeling and I felt myself giggle into my pillow. “Wakey wakey.” He coos again in this absolutely adorable raspy morning voice. I can feel his arms tighten around me and suddenly his fingers dig into my sides. My legs kick up and my body flips around as I squeal out.
“Shawn!” I couldn’t stop the giggles as he continued to tickle me. “S-Stop! I can’t breathe.” I gasp out for breath but he continues his assault on me. I quickly find his fingers and grab them harshly. In one quick movement I throw my legs over top of his body and pin his hands down beside his head.
“Wow. You’re really strong.” Shawn looks at me in awe as I held him down.
“Well I do work-“ before I can finish my sentence he flips me back on to the bed and pins me down.
“Just not as strong as your boyfriend.” He finishes his sentence and I huff out a breath of annoyance. I was never one that liked to lose in anything. “Now lemme see your boo boo.” Shawn says in this baby voice that irritates me even more. He cups my face gently and turns my head so he can see my temple.
“How does it look doctor mendes.” I say smartly. His eyes avert back to mine and he looks at me devilishly.
“Alright you asked for it.” His fingers dig back into my sides again. I belch out another squeal. He wouldn’t stop his attack and I had to come up with something quick.
“Ow! Shawn my head!” I use my injury as a way to escape from his grasp. He stops everything and releases his grip.
“Are you okay? I’m so sorry!” I jolt off the bed and sprint into the bathroom.
“Just kidding!” I laugh loudly and shut the bathroom door behind me.
“Y/f/n y/m/n” He says through gritted teeth and that tone almost turned me on. I’ve never heard him saying my middle name like that before. I let this little giggle out and start to get myself ready.
“Hey Shawn!” I call out when I’m in the shower. I hear the door open and I peak out from the glass doors.
“Yes you squirt?” He sees me and knows that I’m naked and just smirks.
“Can you get in my bag and get my soap?” He leaves the bathroom and what I assume goes to my bag to retrieve my soap. I watch him come back in with my bottle of soap in his hands.
“Say you’re sorry for using your injury as an escape route.” Shawn taunts the bottle in front of me. He knew I was too stubborn to get out of the warm water to grab it.
“I’m sorry.” I say.
“And a kiss.” Shawn comes closer and I roll my eyes. I couldn’t resist how cute he was being so I gave him a nice little wet kiss on his cheek. “You better hurry up so we have time to get breakfast and then come back to change for the wedding.” Shawn says and he stares at me for a moment. My head was leaning against the door and I was just smiling at him.
“You’re distracting me.” I say with a cuter smile this time.
“I’m distracting? You’re the one naked and smiling like an angel right in front of me.” He says back and I watch him run his fingers through his hair. I bite my lip slowly and close to door back of the shower. I go back to finishing up so we would have time to go eat and get ready.
~~~~~
I anxiously fiddle with my hands in my lap as Shawn nears closer to the venue of the wedding. I already saw a few signs with pretty white writing that read “The Mendes Wedding”
It helped me relax when I thought about a wedding of my own. I loved weddings. Something about them made me feel so complete in every way. The beauty of them was far more than the eye could see. If Shawn was at the end of my aisle I walk down, then there would be more than just that one man. The strange idea of thinking about marrying Shawn right now was obviously a little extreme. However, if something feels right then why put out a fire when it still burns? Besides, all girls have these inner thoughts.
“Do not be nervous love.” Shawn says softly and takes ahold of my left hand. He gently intertwines his fingers with mine and he warmly smiles. I look over at him. His navy dress pants fit his lanky legs in all the right spots. I picked out his suit jacket with a baby blue button up underneath. The wedding was more elegant than casual. I was always use to the casual side of weddings. This was way out of my comfort zones of a typical wedding.
Shawn helped me pick out a baby blue dress that would color coordinate with his. Shawn likes the form fitting dresses, but I feel more comfortable in dresses that flow. So we found one that meets more in the middle. The dress hugs around my torso and waist and then as you reach my hips it flows out. Of course I had to find one with a slit because they make everything more breezy. I also enjoyed showing off my cute sparkly heels.
“You look so handsome.” I say to Shawn. His cheeks turn a slight shade of pink already. The night has barely begun and I already had him blushing.
“Thank you darling.” He pulls my hand that was intertwined with his and softly kisses the top of my hand. Something about the way he said darling just made my heart strings tug.
We pull up at the venue and I can already see people in other elegant dresses walking into the area. Shawn pulls up to the Valet parking and hands the man his keys. He goes over to my door and holds his hand out so I can get out safely.  Shawn was smiling from ear to ear as he holds my hand into the venue. I could notice the few stares at me and how I must have been the girl with Shawn. A few ladies that looked to be our age stole many glances to try and figure out who I was to Shawn.
“They are staring because you are so beautiful.” Shawn whispers in my ear softly. I look back at him and he was already staring at me. I saw a spark in his eyes that made my insides go to mush in seconds.
“Or maybe it is because you look so good from my fashion input on you.” He shakes his head with a smile still on his face.
“Believe me it is you. I don't blame them though.” Shawn replies.
“Hey over here you two!” Aaliyah waves her hands at us and motions us towards the seats she had saved. I sat at the end of the row of chairs where the left aisle way was. Then Shawn, Aaliyah, Manny, and Karen.
It was a beautiful day and this venue was even more beautiful. The view was outstanding and there was this slight breeze that made the temperature at its best. When I look around all I can see is smiles and people chattering amongst each other. Shawn places his arm around the back of my chair and leans over closer to me.
“Are you gonna cry?” Shawn asks me with a soft smirk on his face.
“I just might. What is the problem with that?” I reply back.
“Your heart is so soft.” Shawn plants a kiss on my temple and I felt my cheeks heat up.
“You keep making me blush. Stoooppp.” I lightly push him away in a joking manner and he smiles widely at me.
“You two are honestly so in love that it is disgusting but cute.” Aaliyah says. Shawn and I laugh as we look over at her. Manny and Karen were already looking at us. They liked what they saw with our little interaction. Was it something like parents always know? I know that mothers always do for sure.
The music starts to play softly and I look behind me to see the groom walking his way down the aisle. Shawn’s hand takes rest on my shoulder and he soothingly rubs his thumb across my skin.
We watch as everyone comes down the aisle. The bridesmaid were wearing silk pink dresses that each had a different neckline. The groomsmen had different colors of pink ties and bow ties. Then the music changes and everyone stands as the bride appears at the end of the aisle. I look down at the groom and he begins to tear up as he sees his bride. My eyes begin to water as this part always gets me. I could only hope that the vows were short and sweet. Otherwise I’ll have to get some tissues.
~~~~~~
After the ceremony everyone was directed to the venue for the reception. It was under a large white tent that had flowers streaming down in every section you could think of. There was a large area in the middle that was open for the dance floor. In the right corner they have the band and DJ sectioned off. All around there were round tables placed for seating. Outside of the tent there was more seats and fairy lights hung above those seats.
Shawn and I were making our rounds to greet his family memebers. All of the ones that were at the rehearsal dinner asked me how my head was. With lots of makeup and YouTube tutorials I managed to cover up the cut. It only looked like a small scratch and I could handle that. The whole time Shawn was holding on to my hand or had his hand on my waist.
“Do you think they will ever let me live down that fall?” I ask Shawn as we walk away from the 6th couple to ask me about it. Shawn throws his head back and laughs.
“I’m sorry honey. I say not. It would be very hard to forget that.” I follow beside him as we walk over to the open bar to get us some champagne for the toast that was about to start.He gets us our glasses and we walk back over to the seats that Aaliyah, Karen, and Manny has just sat down at. We take a seat and the best man walks up the mic.
He begins with a sappy speech about his best friend and how amazing it was that he fell in love. As usual at the end he raises his glass for a toast and everyone else joins in. Before he leaves he introduces the bride and groom. Everyone cheers as they enter in and go to the dance floor for their first dance. It was sweet to watch them look into their eyes and see all the love.
People start to join them after the first song and I watch as old and young couples take the floor. “Excuse me Miss?” A little voice says and I turn around in my chair. A boy about 10 was standing in a cute little tux and his hair was spiked up with the gel.
“Will you dance with me?” He asks. I could not hold back the smile from his question.
 “I would love to.” He holds his small hand out for mine and I gladly take it. When I look back I see Shawn staring at me with great adoration. Manny and Karen were laughing at the little boys cuteness.
He walks over to the middle of the floor and I see everyone looking at us. He reached just above my waist with my heels on. I lock our hands together and we sway back and forth to the beat. That’s when I notice others were starting to join in on the fun. The parents of the little boy came up to me and snapped our picture of us dancing. The music changes to a high beat song and we start dancing a little funny.
 “Do you mind if I still this beautiful lady from you for a dance?” Shawn asks the little boy and he nods his head quickly.
 “Thank you miss! That was awesome.” He runs off to his friends that were sitting at a table all to themselves. Shawn takes my hands and we dance along to the music.
“That was really sweet of you.” Shawn says.
“He’s a much better dancer than you.” I joke with him and his mouth falls open in shock.
“Take that back.” He puts his hand firmly into my back and pulls me toward his chest.
 “Oh so the lanky boy does have moves.” I carry on with my playfulness. Shawn smirks and quickly without a thought dips me down smoothly. It causes me to let out fits of giggles like a little school girl.
The music slows back down and Shawn holds my waist now. I lay my head against his shoulder and my arms wrapped around his neck. In that moment it felt like it was just us again.
“I love you.” Shawn says and I pull my head back so I could see those brown eyes.
“I love you too.” I reply and Shawn kisses my forehead. “Kiss me Mendes.” He doesn’t hesitate and leans down to reach my lips. It was soft and tender. It was enough to make my head spin around. In the background I heard the start of Dancing Away With My Heart by Lady Antebellum begin to play.
“You’re just dancing away with my heart.” Shawn says and I couldn’t stop the blush on cheeks once again. I lay my head back on his shoulder and we sway gently to the music. People around us were smiling and laughing. But it didn’t matter because I could not replace this moment.

I Feel Pretty
Tumblr media
The Amy Schumer comedy “I Feel Pretty” has generated a bit of backlash before it’s even come out, with many folks concerned that it’s relying on body shaming to generate cheap laughs. But that’s actually not even the movie’s biggest problem.
Schumer stars as a funny and capable but insecure young woman named Renee who bonks her head in a ghastly accident at a packed Manhattan spin class. When she regains consciousness, she believes she’s been magically transformed into the gorgeous bombshell she’s always dreamed of becoming. A steady diet of YouTube hair and makeup tutorials and Cosmopolitan magazine articles—not to mention that she works for a cosmetics company, so she’s a cog in the image machinery herself—has warped her notions of what constitutes true beauty.
But the clever central conceit in the script from Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein—a longtime writing team (“Never Been Kissed,” “He’s Just Not That Into You,” “How to Be Single”) also making their directorial debut—is that Renee’s outward appearance never changes. She thinks she’s suddenly unrecognizable. But really, Renee simply begins radiating the confidence that’s long eluded her, which leads to the kinds of opportunities she always hoped stunning looks would create. She lands her dream job as a receptionist at the high-end makeup company where she’d been toiling in obscurity. She’s a flirty social butterfly during the most mundane dive-bar outings with her two best pals (Aidy Bryant and Busy Phillips). And she gets a boyfriend (Rory Scovel) who’s attracted to her precisely because she’s a fun, fearless female, to borrow the Cosmo lingo.
This is a high-concept, modern-day fairy tale—a female version of “Big,” which “I Feel Pretty” even acknowledges by having Renee watch the Tom Hanks classic on TV before she tosses a coin in a fountain and makes a wish on a stormy night. Even the spin teacher at SoulCycle functions as a high-energy fairy godmother, sprinkling Renee with feel-good mantras before she takes her fateful tumble. It’s the happily-ever-after portion of the story that’s problematic.
Schumer has long challenged traditional ideas of femininity, from her stand-up comedy work to her television series “Inside Amy Schumer” to films like the surprisingly emotional “Trainwreck” and the less-successful “Snatched.” She can be simultaneously brash and sly—swaggering, yet self-deprecating. And watching her inspired delivery and unabashed physicality is one of the film’s great joys. Kohn and Silverstein play with music and camera angles to contrast how Renee newly sees herself in the world—strutting through a crowd with the perfect song punctuating every step—and the uneventful reality.
But playing a character with self-esteem issues—the Renee at the beginning and end of the film—is a bit of a departure for her, and it also allows her some genuinely dramatic moments. In an early scene, she comes home to her cramped Chinatown apartment after a night out with her girlfriends, strips down to her ill-fitting bra and flesh-colored Spanx and sadly surveys what she sees in the full-length mirror. This is not body shaming; this is a sensation every woman has experienced countless times in her life, regardless of her shape or how others might perceive her.
The idea that Renee possessed the confidence she was seeking all along is a well-worn cliché, but “I Feel Pretty” comes at it from a slightly different angle. This is no ugly duckling makeover comedy. There is no trying-on-clothes montage with Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” blasting in the background. But the you-go-girl pep talk Renee gives at the film’s moment of truth—at the launch party for a new line of affordable cosmetics aimed at everyday women—isn’t just empty and hackneyed. It also completely undermines the premise of “I Feel Pretty.” It suggests that giving into brand marketing and buying the right blush at a low price (probably from Target, which gets name-checked frequently) is the key to happiness—that achieving external beauty first can change how you feel internally.
Didn’t “I Feel Pretty” just spend the previous 100 minutes or so arguing the exact opposite?
Until that point, though, I was along for the ride. And a lot of that has to do with Schumer’s interactions with the inspired supporting cast.
Michelle Williams is the movie’s absolute MVP as the willowy Avery LeClair, heiress to the cosmetics line named for her glamorous grandmother, Lily LeClair (Lauren Hutton), who hires Renee for the receptionist job and increasingly leans on her for advice. What Williams is doing here is brilliantly controlled lunacy, starting with her voice: a squeaky baby-doll sound that comes out of nowhere disarms us from the first moment we hear it. Williams is so revered for her powerful dramatic roles by now that she doesn’t get nearly enough of a chance to tap into her comic abilities. From her studied, hesitant delivery to the hilariously awkward way she carries herself, it’s clear she’s having a blast with this wonderfully weird performance. (She does not, however, get to enjoy an on-screen “Dawson’s Creek” reunion with Phillips, her real-life BFF.)
Schumer also has a nice, natural chemistry with Scovel, whose character is admittedly insecure himself and is in awe of Renee’s charm and fortitude. Bryant and Phillips also are afforded more characterization than you often see in the wacky sidekick/best friend roles. And fellow comedian Dave Attell is his delightfully twisted self as the MC at a Coney Island bikini contest where Renee puts on a wild spectacle compared to the typical skinny girls who populate such events.
Again, this isn’t a moment of body shaming. It’s an unbridled display of enthusiasm. We’re laughing with her, not at her. If only the rest of the film had such complete confidence.

This Is How You Tell a Story (and Other Things SXSW Taught Me)
I write a lot about creating an experience.
About humanizing. About authenticity. About telling a story. About being helpful.
In a marketing context, much of this boils down to the idea of your brand: about who you are, what you can do, and how that shapes the messages you send your audience, and how you send them.
And personally, I closely align all of those things with the idea of a story. A brand story, perhaps.
But what I've learned at SXSW is this: your story is just as much about what you aren't as it is what you are, especially when you're creating an experience for your audience.
Here's how I came to that conclusion -- and what I learned about how to tell a story.
What SXSW Taught Me About Storytelling and More
Brand Activation
At SXSW, there's been a great deal of buzz around the term "brand activation," which branding firm Cramer defines as "any campaign, event, or experience that enables your brand to engage directly with consumers and build a loyal brand community around your product or service."
Which, coincidentally, is how I've always defined experiential marketing. Essentially, you're creating a real-life, hands-on way for people to experience your brand -- or, as the saying goes now, activate it.
And at SXSW, these types of experiences tend to run rampant -- whether it's from YouTube, Mercedes-Benz, Google, or an app for meditation (in this case, Headspace).
YouTube
Each one of these experiences seemed to center around a single phrase or keyword. YouTube's, for instance, was the concept of stories -- classic ones, like fairy tales, that were retold in its big red "house" (the "YouTube Story HQ") by way of digital videos and interacting with them.
When users first arrived at the house, they were asked to blow into a microphone. Why? Because they were being inserted into the role of the big, bad, wolf from the story of "The Three Little Pigs" -- and by blowing into the microphone, they would see by way of a video broadcasted on a screen above it what would happen to that little pig's house.
(Full disclosure: I didn't actually know what I was doing at the time and felt terrible for blowing down the pig's house, even if it was just a fictional video.)
But here's the thing: at the core of YouTube's brand is video, whether we use the platform to view it, create it, or share it.
And by participating in this experience -- I was activating the brand.
What isn't necessarily central to the YouTube story, however, is the concept of fairytales -- especially in the context of recent scrutiny its received for some of the content shared on the platform and how the company is handling it.
When the average online consumer thinks of "YouTube," I would predict that the first associations that come to mind aren't the tales of Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, or The Three Little Pigs. Personally, I think of makeup tutorials, hours-long videos of relaxing music that I leave on for my dog while I'm at work, and "Saturday Night Live" skits that I missed.
But fairytales? Not so much.
Which is what makes what YouTube did at SXSW so brilliant. It took something that's not associated with its brand and used what it's known for to re-tell these classics in the best way the brand knows how to: by way of video.
This experience was as much about what YouTube isn't, as much as what it is. At the center of YouTube's SXSW story was, well, stories -- and re-framing them in a way that aligned with the brand.
Mercedes-Benz
The keyword for this story was "smart."
One of the first sessions I attended at SXSW was a talk given by Wilko Stark, VP of Mercedes-Benz Cars Strategy, on little-known facts about self-driving cars.
What underscored his points was the idea of automobiles as intelligent machines -- cars that are smart enough to take care of themselves and navigate their surroundings in a way that allows passengers to carry out their day-to-day lives during the ride.
And that's a key component of this story: not just the smart factor, but how it helps the audience.
It reminded me of something that Facebook Product Design Manager Tutti Taygerly said at a different panel: "Anchor on the core people problem, and then figure out, 'What is the work?' 'What are the use cases?'"
Mercedes-Benz had quite a widespread presence throughout SXSW that went far beyond this talk. In fact, the brand took over a park in Austin to create an entire multi-installment experience based on the foundation of "smart," in the form of cars, homes (in this case, a "Kasita"), and more.
But wait -- Mercedes-Benz doesn't make homes. At the core of its brand is cars: high-end, luxury, and often cost-prohibitive cars. So what place did the idea of smart homes have in this experience?
The "smart" part. Mercedes-Benz is building the concept of intelligence into its brand, whether it's by way of autonomous technology or vehicular efficiency, the latter of which was made apparent in this somewhat compact but well-equipped car that I got to take for a make-believe spin:
Plus, it was just a really cool thing for the audience to see at an experience under the Mercedes-Benz name. So while this particular brand doesn't build houses -- it can build an overall smart experience. And to do that, it partnered with another brand -- Kasita -- to help.
Headspace
Headspace is an app that provides users with guided meditations, mantras, and other calm-inducing experiences. It's something you find on your phone, and experience virtually.
But at SXSW, Headspace brought that experience to live with its "Room to Breathe."
It's not always easy to bring something like a mobile app to life in a tangible, hands-on way, especially when that app is what Wired once called "incredibly ironic": a digital service that's meant to give us space from, well, our often over-connected digital lives.
Here, it made sense. For all the benefits of SXSW, it could also be described as overwhelming: a constant sea of music, film, panels, and brand activations.
But here, the brand was activated when attendees stepped away from the chaos and into a room with space to breathe.
There wasn't anything particularly fancy about it. The room was small, and there were no big and shiny installations, with the minor exception of a projection screen that displayed guided mindfulness exercises.
Instead, there were small stations with mobile devices and headphones where users could read about different meditation exercises offered by the app, and choose the one that best fit their schedules.
And that's exactly what the app itself provides: only here, it took place in-person in a nicely-decorated room that also hosted daily guided meditation sessions by a human, not a recorded voice on a device.
The moral of this story, I thought, was "pause" -- which was in part reflected in the simplicity of the story the experience told.
The question I pose now is this: What's your story?
In answering that, remember that stories have more than one character. And while they have protagonists, that central character is supported by others.
The same is true of brands. Your story is about who and what you are -- the protagonist -- as much as what you aren't.
And when it makes sense to include what you're not in your story, that's where your supporting characters come in. Sometimes, that's a co-brand, or something new that might not be your primary offering, but still fits into your story and helps to tell it in a way that creates a better experience for the user.
Here's to the occasional plot twist.

13 DIY Couples’ Costume Ideas That Are Better Than Anything You Can Buy In A Store
I love Halloween. I love creepy things. I love parties. I love candy (but not candy corn, gross). And most of all, I love making things. So, it’s pretty much the perfect holiday for someone like me. I spend all year making little notes on my phone of good couples costume ideas and mentally engineering their creation so that by the time fall rolls around, I’m all set and ready to go. But let’s assume that, unlike me, you aren’t a neurotic Halloween lover and you don’t have a ton of DIY couples costume ideas in your phone. Don’t worry, you can have some of mine. Trust me, I’ve got plenty.
So, whether you prefer something cute, sexy, or nightmare-inducing, I’ve figured out how to put it on your bods. Yes, you could just run down to the local costume store, but that’s so boring! That’s how you end up at a party with everyone in the same Harley Quinn and Jack Sparrow costumes. Anyone can buy a costume at the store, but it takes a bit more effort and creativity to make it yourself. And really, don’t you and your partner deserve to win all the contests this year?
Here are some ideas to borrow, or at least to get your creativity flowin’.
1. Baby And Debora From Baby Driver
Giphy
This year’s coolest couple, hands down, are Baby and Debora from Baby Driver. If you have a partner who’s tough to talk into dressing up for Halloween, this is the couples costume he won’t be able to turn down. Who doesn’t want to be a bad ass get away driver? As a bonus, it’s actually really cool stuff you will want to wear year round.
For Debora, you’ll want to find a cute retro waitress dress and pair it with a sheepskin lined denim jacket. The Baby costume is just as easy: You just need the varsity style jacket, a white tee, black wayfarers, jeans, and black shoes. If you really want to complete the look, you can add a scar with with wax. Just make sure not to forget the earbuds!
2. The Fairly Odd Parents
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
Want to be Wanda and Cosmo for Halloween this year? Your wish is my command. This one will take some minor fabrication, but I promise you are totally up for it. For Wanda, you will need a yellow tee, black pants, wings, and pink hair spray. Cosmo’s outfit is just a white button up shirt, black tie, black pants, green hair spray, and, of course, some more fairy wings. That just leaves their fairy crowns and wands. Time to get crafty. To create the crowns, you’ll need small headbands that will blend in your hair, a sheet of yellow foam, and some craft wire. To make the wand, you’ll need some wood dowels painted black, and you can use the leftover foam sheet to make the stars.
3. Yorkie And Kelly from Black Mirror
Netflix
Did you cry like a baby when Black Mirror’s San Junipero episode took home the Emmy for Outstanding Television series this year, too? Yeah, that’s because Yorkie and Kelly are everything, including this year’s queer girl couples costume goals. Unless you want to spend your next month trawling through a million thrift shops to find the perfect blinged-out jacket, the key is to just find modern pieces, which, when accessorized properly, give them an ’80s feel.
To channel Yorkie’s party girl vibe, you’ll need an embellished purple jacket, black corset top, and black harem pants. Top it off with a black oversized bow in the hair. To capture the adorable nerdiness of Kelly, pair a light blue sweatshirt with a pink collared shirt, khaki shorts, and don’t forget the wire-rimmed glasses. Cutest duo ever.
4. Cards Against Humanity
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
Need a last minute costume that is actually awesome? Good news: This one only requires some foam boards and black and white paint pens! If you want to get more interactive, opt for chalkboards and erasable pens. Warning: That can get very dangerous as the night goes on and the drinks are flowing. Hmm, actually, that pretty much describes every game of Cards Against Humanity I’ve ever played, so it’s on theme!
5. Diana Prince And Steve Trevor From Wonder Woman
Warner Bros. Pictures
All I want in life is to be Wonder Woman. Is that too much to ask? Yes, yes, it is, because I don’t have the fabrication skills to create a breast plate. Now her disguise outfit… that’s something I can achieve. Was there anyone more dapper than Diana Prince and Steve Trevor as they made their way through the streets of 1910s London? Nope, and this is how you steal their style this Halloween.
This is not a warm-climate-appropriate costume. Go this route only if your Halloween is going to be on the chilly side. To get the Diana look, you’ll need a wool houndstooth coat, belted. Under the coat, you’ll need a white collared shirt, long skirt, and Victorian style boots. Oh, and don’t forget her sword. Steve’s costume is made of up layers: Start with a turtleneck sweater, topped with a brown leather vest and sheepskin lined coat. Pair all of this with a pair of dark khaki pants and black boots. Top it off with a navy brood hat to really nail the period costume.
6. The Purge
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
Personally, I love a scary costume on Halloween, and what is scarier than the idea of all your friends and neighbors suddenly turning into homicidal maniacs for 12 hours every year? Plus, this costume is great if you’re a procrastinator, because it can be made up almost entirely of things you already have in your wardrobe. Your best bets are something sexy — or ironic — like lingerie, a prom dress, or a tux. To complete the look, you’ll need to make a mask, and there are great tutorials online on how to turn them into Purge masks. And of course, you’ll need your killing spree weapons of choice.
7. Pop Art
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
Another last-minute costume that will still wow at any Halloween party is to turn the two of you into living pop art. There are some great tutorials on YouTube that will walk you through the makeup technique. To complete the look, think retro-inspired comic book clothing, and you can add speech bubbles with a headband, craft wire, and some paper. One last bit of advice: I highly suggest a few practice run throughs before hand. Otherwise your costume might be a living Pinterest fail instead.
8. Dipper And Mabel
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
Is it creepy if your couples costume is made up of a brother and sister? Nah, not when it’s Dipper and Mable. They’re hardly the Lannisters, if you know what I’m sayin’. Anyway, moving on. Here’s how to become Gravity Falls’ greatest mystery solvers. For Dipper, you’ll need an orange t-shirt, blue vest, white socks, black shoes, and grey shorts. To complete the look, you’ll also need his signature hat, and to create that you need a blue trucker hat and some fabric paint to add the little blue tree. You might as well get the whole fabric paint kit, because you’re going to need a few more colors to create Mabel’s rainbow and star turtleneck. The rest of her costume is easy; it’s just a denim skirt, white knee socks, and some black ballet flats. Oh, and her headband too, of course. Cryptids of the Northwest will shiver when they see you coming.
9. Ellie And Grant From Jurassic Park
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
You know who were an awesome couple? Ellie and Grant from Jurassic Park. They were smart, adventurous, and totally went toe-to-toe with prehistoric monsters… and won! Total couples goals. Yes, I know they weren’t together in the sequels, but let’s just make a pact to pretend they never happened, OK? Good. Moving on.
Here is how you can become Ellie and Grant for Halloween. Spoiler alert: Brace for khaki. For Ellie, you’ll need khaki shorts, a blue tank top, a pink button up (tied at the waist), hiking boots, and grey socks. For Grant, khaki pants, a denim shirt, a red bandana tied at the neck, hiking boots, and top it off with a wide brimmed fedora. Oh, and some dinosaur props really tie it all together.
If your boo isn’t really a “Grant type,” there’s always the doctor of chaos himself, Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcom. Just sayin’.
10. Hook And Tinker Bell
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
Who wants to be Peter Pan and Wendy when you can be Tink and Hook? They have all the best accessories anyway. I dunno, I ship ’em. To create a cool Captain Hook, you need a red blazer, white blouse, a hook, and pirate captain’s hat with feathers. To get your Tinker Bell on, you’ll want a green tulle dress and fairy wings. Simple and cute.
11. Pennywise And Georgie From It
Giphy
Did you see It yet? Of course you did — everyone has. Thats because it’s scary as hell. I had nightmares for two nights after I saw it that Pennywise was peeking in my window. How messed up is that? Anyway, that also means it’s going to be a fantastic couples costume if you want to terrorize everyone else at the party. What else is Halloween for, right? The Georgie costume is easy; all you really need a is a hooded yellow rain coat, rain boots, and maybe a paper boat. To create your Pennywise, you’ll need a men’s white ruffled shirt, neck ruff, and pirate style pants. Add red pompoms down the front and on the toes of the shoes. Top it off with a red wig, killer clown makeup, and a red balloon. Why? Because they float. They all float.
12. Nasa And The Stars
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
I love this couples costume, because what is more “meant to be together” than a NASA nerd and the galaxy? It’s sweet and clever and probably mostly already in your closet. Don’t lie — we all bought a galaxy dress in the last few years. Now you get to pull it back out and be the cutest couple at the party. For your astronomy nerd costume, you’ll just need a NASA tee, some nerd glasses (or add tape to yours), and suspenders are a nice touch. The stars really aligned for this costumes. Eh? Nudge, nudge.
13. Rick And Morty From Rick And Morty
//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js
You’re gonna wubba-dubba-dub-love this costume idea! Want a reason to love Rick and Morty, I mean besides the fact that it’s just stone cold genius? This season they decided to implement gender parity in the writer’s room, and the show has never been better. Plus, when internet jerks decided it would be awesome to doxx those writers, creator Dan Harmon publicly smacked them down. Awesome. OK, now that you are pumped to celebrate all things Rick and Morty, here’s how to achieve the look. For Rick, you’ll need a lab coat, light blue shirt, khaki pants, a wig, and his trusty portal gun. Morty’s costume is a yellow shirt and jeans, but I
