Otabek Altin Ends Career With Fourth World Title
Announces surprise retirement during press conference
Saturday, March 23rd
MONTREAL, CANADA – Otabek Altin of Kazakhstan skated a fantastic free skate to win a fourth world title in a very competitive field. The 26-year-old was second in the free, with a score of 221.69 for a total score of 335.14. The most decorated Asian skater in history, Altin surprised many by announcing his retirement from competitive figure skating during the press conference, citing a recurring back injury that he’s been dealing with but has been getting worse. Altin also said he has already accomplished everything he’s wanted and more.
“It’s great to end my career on such a high,” said the two-time Grand Prix Final Champion. “I know my retirement announcement may come as a shock to some, but it’s something I have thought about for years. I came into this season knowing it would be my last. My coaches have supported me throughout everything, and I thank them for what they’ve done for me over the last few years. I really only stayed in these last couple of years for Yuri, but I’m ready to just be his husband now and to move to the next phase of our lives.”
Altin has had a storied career that many dream of. He had a solid but less than stellar Junior career that includes a JGP Final bronze and two Junior World medals. He placed second at Four Continents the following year and then a surprise bronze at Worlds and hasn’t looked back since. Two Olympic medals, four world titles – six medals overall – three Four Continents titles, and two Grand Prix Final titles. It’s a career many dream of.
Guang-hong de la Iglesia of China won the free skate and came within a point of overtaking Altin. The 24-year-old scored 224.26 for a total score of 334.38. “I’m so proud of what I did here today. I win would have been nice, but I’m glad to be able to skate so well,” said the two-time Four Continents silver medalist. “Of course, we knew that Otabek was retiring all season, and I’m glad I got to have this season competing against him. He’s a great competitor, skater, and friend.”
2022 World Champion Seung-gil Lee of South Korea came up from fourth to win the bronze. Scoring 109.93 in his short, he scored 220.34 for his free skate, for a total score of 330.27. “I am honored to have skated so well,” said the 2020 Four Continents Champion. “I am very proud of how I skated, to skate a personal best and win a medal. It was a very good competition all the way around.” When asked about the retirement, Lee simply said, “He’s a wonderful competitor. I wish him well.”
Hometown favorite Leroy had a popped jump and only scored 208.37 for his free 319.24, ending up in fifth place overall. But combined with his young brother’s eighth-place finish, Canada keeps its third spot for next year’s Worlds.

The London Beast
There are legends of a large raging beast that roams the streets of London some nights. Many have tried to catch this beast, but to no avail.
There are several to claim a certain black-eyed man to be the beast, but he always denies. His alibi holds up as he is distinctly humanoid where the beast is not.
A local bar has also been accused of harboring this beast, however, any attempt to investigate has been halted by the bar-goers. Whether this be an employee or a customer.
"If we had a monster living with us, is it our duty to kick them to the curb?" said an employee who wished to remain anonymous, "This bar is open to all, beasts and humans alike,"
This is all the reporter got before being chased out by angry customers.
Still, the investigation into the London Beast continues.

Olympic Champ Leroy Dominates Season Opener in Slovakia
October 1, 2022
BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA – Reigning Olympic Champion Jean-Jacques Leroy of Canada had a dominating performance this week, winning the competition by almost sixty points. The 25-year-old scored 99.55 for his short program, just shy of Altin’s short program score from last week. He scored 204.62 for his free program for an overall score of 304.19, both the highest scores of the season so far. “It was a good start to my season,” said the reigning World bronze medalist.
“I’m not happy with how my season ended. Perhaps I shouldn’t have gone to Worlds, but it would have been a great way to retire if I would have won. For now, I want to prove why I won the Olympics, and this was a good way to start.” Leroy’s next competition will be Skate Canada, where he will be up against his younger brother as well as British skater Adam Loughton and four-time Japanese Champion Kenjirou Minami.
Joining Leroy on the podium were two 20-year-olds. Winning the silver medal was Giovanni Schiavone of Italy. He scored 87.39 for his short, 157.18 for his free for an overall score of 244.57 – all personal bests. “There’s a vacancy in the competition in Italy this year,” he said, speaking of the retirement of 11-time National Champion Michele Crispino, who retired after the Olympic last season. “I want to prove that I am a contender, and this was exactly what I wanted to do when I came here for this competition.” He will be competing at the NHK Trophy in November.
Winning the bronze medal was six-time Korean National silver medalist Gi-joon Khan. He scored 80.81 for his short program, 145.51 for his free program and 226.36 overall. “Obviously, mistakes were made. I can be better,” the two-time Olympian told reporters. “I want to use this as a learning experience, and go home and do better at my Grand Prix events. He will be competing with Leroy at Skate Canada and will see Schiavone at the NHK Trophy.

This is an excellent NY Times interactive article, so the above link is a gift 🎁 link so anyone can read the entire article, even if they don't subscribe to the NY Times. Here are some excerpts.
Upending the outcome of a free and fair presidential election is no minor endeavor. It requires time, energy, money and, especially, an awful lot of people willing to do the wrong thing — or at least go along with it. The network of people who allegedly helped Donald Trump try, without success, to stay in power more than two and a half years ago may seem hopelessly chaotic, but there was a method to the madness. American elections are, by design, entrusted to the states and therefore decentralized. To meddle in them requires national masterminds working hand in glove with plotters at the state and local levels — a tangle of conspirators, enablers and indulgent bystanders as messy and sprawling as our democracy itself. And while it can be tempting to downplay or dismiss the entire nightmare as the pathetic machinations of crackpots and fringe figures or even to wave it off as ancient history, that would be a mistake. Those who worked to overturn the 2020 election are the same kinds of people and groups Mr. Trump would surely surround himself with if elected to a second term: unscrupulous or timid federal and state officials, ethically flexible lawyers and Republican yes men and women. Except that in 2025 those figures would have a better sense of how to dismantle the guardrails that once stood in their way and how to exploit the fault lines and weaknesses in our electoral process. [emphasis added]
Below is the final graphic in the article that shows all the people connected with Trump's coup attempt, including some who refused to go along with it:

wrightworth fake dating au
one day, phoenix gets a wedding invite in the mail from a family member. as he’s reading it, he realizes it’s from his least favorite aunt that he had beef with. he doesn’t see her often due to some comments she’s made about his bisexuality (she’s not overly rude or homophobic but the comments still don’t fly with his gay moms), but the encounters he’s had still leave a bitter taste in his mouth and his blood boiling. normally, he’d rsvp no, but he’s petty and desperate to show her up at her wedding to her third husband.
he decides the best way to do this is to propose to his gay lover at her wedding.
the only problem is that he doesn’t have a gay lover.
he’s going to have to fake date someone and make their relationship look real enough for a proposal to be believable. he comes to the realization that only one qualified enough… is miles.
it takes a lot to convince miles (he’s sure it’s a horrible plan and he has no clue why he’d agree to a deal where the only thing in it for him is more unnecessary feelings), but he eventually gives due to phoenix’s incessant begging.
since phoenix wants their fake relationship to be perfect, he has them go on fake dates (that are weirdly similar to the dinners they often go on) as well as go over the details of their “relationship” (they make it similar to their current friendship, just with them falling in love and getting together after phoenix gets his badge back). it took a lot of convincing for miles to agree to the proposal plan on top of the fake dating scheme, but he can’t win arguments with wright when he’s dead set on a crazy idea, so he begrudgingly gives in (as long as he gets to pick out the ring, because he doubts wright would pick a good enough ring for their fake engagement).
the day comes and the two are confident in their plan. the only problem could be wright’s moms, since he’s close to them and he’s not sure if they’d buy him not telling them about him being in a relationship. however, to their great surprise, they buy it pretty easily. one of them said she suspected it would happen sooner or later with how much phoenix talks about miles while the other assumed that they had been dating for years and just didn’t outwardly say it due to it being obvious (“i mean, i had a feeling you were in love with him after you confessed you wanted to go into law to help him after seeing him in the paper” -mrs. wright).
the wedding is fairly uneventful, and phoenix makes sure to show off his “partner” to everybody he interacts with, since he’s sure loudly and proudly being in love with another man at her wedding would piss of his aunt more (by the time the reception rolls around, miles is incredibly flustered despite the whole relationship being fake).
their proposal goes off without a hitch, and phoenix relishes in the furious look on his aunt’s face.
phoenix expects it to end after the wedding is over. after all, he and miles part ways after, and all he has is the memories and his intense feelings for his dear friend.
however, it does not, in fact, end there.
what phoenix didn’t know was that an old acquaintance was the plus one for one of his cousins. she saw the proposal and had to take a picture, confident that a story about the engagement between chief prosecutor miles edgeworth and defense attorney phoenix wright would be just the thing to really kick off her career.
turns out, lotta hart was very right, and phoenix and miles had to deal with their fake proposal being very public (as well as their friends being upset that they weren’t even told that the two were dating in the first place)

US, South Korea, and Canada Land on World Team Trophy Podium
South Korea’s first WTT podium in surprise silver
April 16, 2023
TOKYO, JAPAN – Team USA dominated to win gold at the World Team Trophy. Joined at the competition by the other top five countries – South Korea, Canada, Japan, and Italy. China was originally in the top six but declined the spot, which went to France. Team USA was led by Olympic medalists Aura Nosdod and Ashley Rodriguez, two placed first and second in both of the Women’s short and free events. Team USA ended up with 126 points overall.
“I’m thrilled with how everyone competed,” said Team Captain and reigning National Champion Alexander Carpenter, who was seventh in the short and fourth in the free. “We all did our jobs, and winning by such a large margin is fantastic. I’m so proud of everyone. This was a dream competition for us, I think, and a great way to end the season.” This is the second gold for the US at the WTT.
Surprising everyone was South Korea, who also had a dream competition to win the first-ever gold for South Korea at this event. With top-five skates in the Women’s event, and second in both of the Men’s events, they scored an overall 96 points to come away with a narrow silver. “My short program was very poor for me,” said Team Captain and 2022 World Champion Seung-gil Lee. “I feel like we did very good in the other disciplines, and I’m proud of our silver medal.”
Canada held off Japan to win the bronze by only one point, with 93 points to 92. “There are improvements we could have made for sure,” said reigning Olympic Champion Jean-Jacques Leroy. “But we had solid performances in both Pairs and Dance, and I think my brother really won this for us by winning the short,” said the two-time Grand Prix Final bronze medalist. His younger brother, Louis Leroy, had a personal best score to win the short after the older Leroy popped his Sal, missing the combo. “I was so embarrassed by that mistake, but we still came away with a medal, and I’m proud.”
