A friendly wizard and style reference.
Midjourney has just released both the version 6 of its niji anime engine and the first version of its "style reference" tool.
Functionally this is a variation of the image prompting system (explained here), in which breaks a submitted image down into the 'token language' the AI uses internally and uses that as a supplement to a text prompt. "Style Reference" (or 'sref') lets you do this with up to three images, only with only the tokens associated with 'style' being drawn upon.
This is not to be confused with style transfer, a much older and very different AI art process.
But what is a style in this context? And how does it affect generation?
Tumblr media
Prompt: a blue axolotl-anthro wizard in a red-and-yellow swirl-pattern robe, holding a sheleighleigh made of purple wood and a potion full of glowing green energy drink. A blue-and-green ladybug familiar stands near his feet, white background, fullbody image
Settings: --niji 6, --style raw --s 50 --seed 1762468963
Here, I've tested the same seed and prompt with a number of reference images.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My semiorganized ramblings under the fold
The first thing I note is that style reference affects the gen so much that same-seed/different style ref comparisons are kind of pointless. Way too much of pose, composition and content changes for it to matter, so for future style ref tests, I'm probably going to drop the seeds.
The second thing I note is that there are certain limitations. You need to change up your prompt for things like photography, and the system interprets styles using its own criteria, not ours. If image prompting misinterprets something, so will style ref, but perhaps not in the same way.
This is notable for the one prompted with a scan from the Nuremberg Chronicle (first row). It recognizes that its a woodcut and emulates that general vibe nicely, but MJ is highly tuned for aesthetics, and emulating real world jank and clumsiness is a weak area. This is literally the first printed (european at least) book with illustrations. Every example thereafter is building on that skillset, so the dataset for woodcuts is going to be largely of a higher apparent quality.
In short, with Midjourney, additional prompt work is needed to replicate the look of early jank or intentionally 'ugly' art styles, and even as recent as v6 I've had no luck with things like midcentury Hanna-Barbereesque cheap TV animation styles or shitty 1990s CGI.
Style reference can help, I've gotten some pretty good cheap 80s-90s TV animation looking stuff from v6 niji and style ref in my early tests:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Color observations: Absent specific requests in the prompt, SREF will stick pretty close to the palette and lighting conditions of the referenced image. With such instructions, you get blending, so the one referencing the okapi fakemon (second row from bottom), for instance, has a lot of colors the reference image doesn't have, but they're in similar in vibrancy and saturation.
One limitation, however, is it doesn't apply to the aspects of the gen that come from any image prompts, so it will always blend the style of the style reference with the style aspects inherited from the image prompt, and that is very strong compared to the style ref.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Using the dog as the image prompt, and the TFTM reformatting as the style prompt, and the text prompt: "a cute older yorkie dog sitting on a bedspread", we get the image on the left. Dropping the image prompt weight to .25 gets us the center option, and removing the image prompt entirely produces the one on the right.
I expect this will be patched eventually, or general image prompting may fall out of favor compared to a combination of style ref and the upcoming character reference option, which will be the same thing, but will only reference the tokens associated with the character in the reference image. Depending on how that works that will have a lot of uses.
Stay tuned for more experiments. There's some good potential for freaky, unexplored aesthetics with combinations of multiple style refs and text prompts.

I drew my newest adopted character from @rikacreature as if it was a potential pokemon! It's design fits so incredibly well with the eeveelution line that i HAD to do a silly little stats thing! I tried very hard to mimic the official style, but may have overshaded it a smidge.
I couldn't decide between naming it Bunvee or Bunneon as a pokemon so it get both haha! I am still considering naming the actual (non fakemon version) oc something else but am strongly leaning torwards Bunvee
I love them so much 💖💖💖

Unineon 2023
Okay another one of my themed eeveelution fakemon, getting an updated look and story. This on is themed after Unicorns.
Name: Unineon (Uni-neon) Type: Fairy / Normal Ability: Magic Bounce / Magic Guard Hidden Ability: Friend Guard Classification: Wish Guardian Fakémon Dex Entry:                It is said to have been born from the wish, a child made to save their dying Eevee using Jirachi. Instead of healing the Pokemon it transformed them into the Wish Guardian Unineon, which now guards and protects Jirachi while they slumber.
Extremely friendly and loves hanging around children it is said that it will do almost anything to make it's trainers dreams come true.
--------------------------
Unineon event would involve a traveling carnival arriving and the player character being asked to come along to it by their friend/rival, their would be a lot of mini games, and battle facility style challenges.
And one of the prizes you can get is 'Star Candy' which you can use to evolve Eevee into Unineon.
One of the more interesting event's that would happen at this carnival is that Ultra Beast will randomly show up disrupting everything and your character having to either fight them off or capture them. Their would be mystery about why the Ultra Beast seem to keep showing up at this carnival and someone from Pokemon International Police would arriving suspecting the traveling carnival may have a Pokemon or a device that is luring the Ultra Beast's to them. So it would be up to the player character and friends to find out the truth before anymore Ultra Beast's show up.

(ID: A digital drawing of Twiglog, a character that is a log with multiple holes all over them, each hole either having nothing inside or an arm or a eye. In this drawing they have two arms potruding from two different wholes, both held up infront of them. They have three visible eyes, all having an expression that seems happy. Their is text meant to be their dialogue next to them saying: Hello, my friends! I’m Crim, runner of asktheovertaken and mysteriousmothball. I have a little to talk about regarding my creations, so please stick around if your interested! End ID)
Tumblr media
(ID: There is a second image that is another drawing of Twiglog, this time off to the side of the screen, facing away from the viewer. There are some holes visible on their back, but no eyes show. They look off into the distance with only one hand raised, saying: First things first, despite my absence I haven’t left the community.(you might’ve seen me lurking!) I don’t have any plans to! I will confirm Asktheovertaken and M M are discontinued. I have no ideas for what to do with them and no motivations. Text ends there, with three small sketches of: Mothball the Ninjask Electrike hybrid from Mysterious Mothball, then Mags the Magnemite and Vau the Vaporeon from Ask the overtaken. End ID)
Tumblr media
(ID: Another drawing of Twiglog, this time of them hunched over a desk, fretting over a piece of paper while holding a pencil in one of their four arms protruding out of some of the various holes on their log body. They have one visible eye, out in the very front of their body. They have a worried expression. Theres dialouge above them reading: I also want to confirm I do have a few projects in the works! I never really stopped making stuff relating to pokeask, I’ve just never felt like I had enough plot or enough things sorted out or some other worry to make another blog. I’ve also had trouble drawing, specially in comic style or something consistently. This problem has diminished quire a bit though! The text ends there. End ID)
Tumblr media
(ID: Another image showing a drawing of Twiglog. In this one, they are on display in a large format, making only the top half and a bit of the side of their body visible. They have one arm out, giving a thumbs up. They have three eyes poking out of some of the holes on the front of their body, all showing the same happy expression. Text above them reads: I hope to release something this year! I have alot to get done for that to happen, but I’m confident I can do it. End of text and ID)
-
Hello everyone! Its been awhile, I just wanted to make this to share my plans for the future when it comes to pokeask. I also wanted to say if you have any questions(just in general or about this specifically) feel free to ask me. Also, Twiglog(character shown here) is my fakemon pokesona.
I figured I should give an update before I officially get back into poke ask-ing, so that its not so much of a random occurrence. And also because I’ve already been doing a little in the community and I want to make it surefire knowledge I’m sticking around lol.
Thanks for reading!

Commissions open!
Tumblr media
Hello hello! I'm finally happy to say my commissions are now open!
I'm a traditional ballpoint pen artist who mainly specializes in all sorts of creatures but I do anything from Furry to Fakemon! While I may have more weaknesses when it comes to drawing humans I'm not against those either. Some things to know:
I work on physical paper so I may end up not being able to fit the entire character's features, however I will do my best to be careful.
If more than one character is included in a drawing, each will be priced as their own separate character and follow the size guide.
When I have finished drawing I will send you a reduced resolution version before asking for payment.
I struggle with insomnia and low energy so I may not always be able to draw or respond quickly, but I will do my best to keep in contact and give updates!
If you like my style and want to commission me, I check my inboxes fairly frequently! The rest of my gallery contains a lot of art if you want to see more examples of the range I do.

Hi! It’s me again! Back at it with random sketches! This time some fake pokémon brainstorming for the Greece-based region my character Star is sort-of from.
Full disclaimer I am not an experienced fakemon creator so these are mostly just some initial concept sketches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pic 1: Olve, the olive bird pokémon. The Helles region’s grass starter. And yes, I had this idea solidly before we learned anything about Smoliv, and I am still a little miffed. Olives felt like such a good concept to use for a Greece region! The story of Athena winning Athens with an olive tree! Anyways, this line’s supposed to play with the concept of the dove and the olive branch as well.
Pic 2: Yet-unnamed fire starter, evolves into a big red bull. I like the (debunked) theory of fire starters all being tied to the chinese zodiac, and as someone who was born in the year of the fire ox, this really felt like the Only Reasonable Choice.
(Not pictured here, but the water starter line is based on the story of Dionysus turning pirates into dolphins. They’re water/psychic)
Pics 3-4: The Route 1 bird, the normal-type Aman. Yes, it is a pun on that one story about Diogenes and the plucked chicken. It evolves into a flying/fighting type based on the eagle that eats Prometheus’ liver.
Pics 5-6: Krinocopia, the Helles region’s equivalent of Chansey. It’s a fairy/grass type based on both the Cretan Ibex/Kri-Kri, and also the goat Amalthea who in myth nursed the baby Zeus while he was kept hidden from Kronos. The first stage of the evolution is called Amalbex. I’m still figuring out how to make it more distinct from other similar ungulate pokémon designs.
(Obviously I need to work more at converting the designs to a proper pokémon style lmao)

more quick ideas for legends/mythicals based on protags. as well as human characters based on the main legends/mythicals....
roaming red legendary? with some kind of ice type form that is only found on mt silver(in johto games), doesnt have a cry. green mythical pokemon that considers itself the red ones rival, may or may have a rivalry related ability idk...leaf fakemon that was introduced in gen 3 but was a beta pokemon in gen 1......ngl i kind of like the idea of giovanni being a ground type legendary and mew being a mother and an unethical scientist of sorts tho....maybe the legendary birds would take the place of the protags?????
johto legends, ho oh=ethan and kris=lugia. they have more or less the same roles as the legends?????(maybe) BUT at the very least they look different. also lyra is a mythical that has kind of sudowoodo(ik sudo isnt a legend/mythical but you get what i mean) type vibe were they like tricking people...silver was a clone pokemon created by mew(using some giovanni fakemon dna?) before she was defeated?...but ho oh and lugia are older trainers from ecruteak. lugia moved to cianwood a long time ago tho...maybe celebis the protag idfk...
i think i gotta go the obv route with archie and maxie replacing kyogre and groudon and vice versa. but may and brendan more or less replace latias and latios and have a more important role(in theory)...wally is a psychic mythical that got injured(???) but is roaming in an effort to get stronger/find a good trainer?? lisia is just one of those cute mythicals.....
dppt trio would be a legendary trio a la lake guardians style but their scarves would be used as a way of tying their designs together??? idk this regions legends are wild thats all i got
hil dragon was originally part of a mythical quartet? with cheren and bianca mythicals(who had somthing to do with truth and ideals??) but became a legendary when it combined its two halves(hilbert and hilda) to defeat an evil force from a long time ago(n dragon???) current day it has not been seen in unova for ages but there have been sightings around the rest of the world...no one can really comment on the authenticity of these sightings tho...and ok ik i linked the post where i drew reshiram and zekrom as teenagers starting a journey but i kind of like the idea of them being older trainers in opelucid or being connected to the legends somehow instead....i think they still have "friend group drama" with kyurem tho. idk maybe the protags would be some of the other mythicals... i dunno.

Hi!! You reblogged my pokemon fan games post and I would love to hear your full rec list 👀👀 I’ve been interested in pokemon rejuvenation and thinking about trying it out once I finish playing pokemon insurgence!
oh i have lots! im going to throw some rom hacks in the bundle as well. ill sort them by rom hacks and fangames.
here we go!
ROM HACKS:
Emerald Rogue is the way to go if you want a roguelike experience like TBOI or Hades! There's virtually no story, but it's quite a lot of fun to play and has lots of replay value, fit with sidequests and challenges with intriguing rewards.
Recommended if you want to jump right in and get to battling, testing your skill!
Unbound is a ROM hack that truly has it all; fit with an original story and region, postgame, difficulty options, and the CFRU engine that has added a myriad of QOL features to Fire Red hacks, it is undoubtedly one of the very best hacks of all time! It also has an original soundtrack!
Recommended if you want to play a story-driven game with countless quality-of-life features!
Gaia is a more grounded ROM hack that could very easily fool me for a mainline game; this is a compliment, as it's wonderfully done! It has a plot centralizing around the legendary golems, an original region and characters, and flavor that just feels homey. (This also maaayy be getting an update in the future, so keep that in mind.)
Recommended if you're looking for a casual but intriguing experience!
Onto the fangames- I have an extensive list, but I'm going to keep it at three games each since this post is getting quite lengthy.
I won't go in depth on these two since you've played one and are going to play another, but Reborn and Rejuvenation are musts for me! With that out of the way,
Tectonic is a fangame that turns the entire Pokemon experience on its head. Rather than EVs, Style Points can be freely distributed and taken away. Every Pokemon has been reworked from the ground up, and there are even new status effects like Dizziness and Numbness. The plot revolves around the Avatar Phenomenon, ghostly apparitions of Pokemon wreaking havoc across the region, and racing your brother for the title of Champion to gain the approval of your cold-shouldered mother.
There's quite a steep learning curve, but I think it's worth it; this is one of my favorite plots in a fangame thus far.
Recommended if you want to shake up the original Pokemon formula!
Desolation is the third major 'Rebornian' game along with Reborn itself and Rejuvenation. It plays similarly to the other two, with a cohesive, dark plot and field effects, difficulty, and choices that have consequences. It also features gorgeous art and a lovely soundtrack!
What is it your dream? Is it to be a hero..?
Recommended if you enjoyed pretty much anything about Reborn!
Flux is the final fangame I will be recommending today. It's quite incomplete, with one chapter of three being finished, but it more than makes up for it with the story content, gameplay, and gorgeous art. It's also the only fangame in this list that consists almost entirely of Fakemon; some may even seem familiar!
The same people who created Uranium (also do recommend) are currently working on Flux, and some designs have been remastered and carried over into the new game.
Recommended if.. you're breathing. This fangame is amazing. I love it!
If that's not enough, some people over on the Reborn Discord have compiled a list of virtually every ROM hack and fangame out there, with the means to filter to your tastes. I hope it suits you well!

I've been playing 2 pokemon fan game demos recently
Tumblr media
First off, Project Untamed, probably more well known as the Mazah Region fan game being made based on Subjectively's fakemon region project
The demo isn't long and only goes 1 gym deep so far, but this is definitely a fan game to watch out for. The fakemon all have this unique charm but unifying style that make them stand out, and the overall quality is pretty great. It's based on Central America, and overall have a Tradition vs Change motif. My time was fun, however brief it was. Mechanically speaking too, this is one of the few fakemon fan games I've played with an actual speed up button- something I desperately wish normal pokemon games had, and I definitely appreciate it. Artistically speaking the game is gorgeous to look at, and I admire the respect towards the culture and actually allowing it to... well, exist unsullied. A lot of pokemon games have this issue where they put regions in unique locations but skimp on the unique culture of the area in favor of a more generic map- which I would get why in some cases, but not others. Mazah shows it off respectfully, even the first gym being a ghost gym with inspiration from Day of the Dead (also I just want to say how funny and happy I was at the gym theme for that one). The characters are also endearing so far, and the game's humor is also on point, which I always appreciate.
Anyway keep an eye on this game. In a few years every poketuber will be hailing it as the best fan game of whatever year it comes out.
For my next game
Tumblr media
I took a dip back into the Spanish side of the fan games to play a demo of Pokémon Armonia, which has a very decent English translation so far. I think 4 gyms are in, and I'm nearing the end of that.
Armonia's region is Safar, which I believe is based on Africa- at least the map sort of looks like the hook of the upper west side. The environments are beautiful and varied, and the art style is really high quality and filled with so much soul in each location and sprite. I find myself studying these Spanish games tbh, because there's always such a unique quality and extra care out into them, and I'm actually taking notes on the sprite style here as well. There's big photos done in pixel art as well that just... well, it looks great, as I've been gushing about for a while.
Remember how I said Spanish fan games have a unique quality to them? How's this for unique: the opening scene has VOICE ACTING. Yes, the world's richest franchise can't even add it to the spearhead of off their commercial operations for the next few years, but a fan game certainly can! I'm not sure if more is planned to be added in the future, but I hope so.
Anyway, that little aside put... well. Aside. I guess. The fakemon are fun and fantastic. I will say that it's rare to find fan games with fakemon in general, and of the 3 I've played from the Spanish side so far, they're still somewhat rare to see here. That's different in Armonia. The dex is still building, but so far, 4 gyms in, and I've seen mostly new designs rather than old- think something like Hoenn if that makes sense. Pretty much every single one has been a hit in some fashion or another and are fun to mess with. The regional variants are fun too, and I especially adore my Safaran Arcanine, which is Ground/Fairy.
I say this too, they do a very interesting take on introducing new evolution methods: in one particular side quest, they pull over and basically demonstrate the circumstances required to evolve a certain regional variant. Honestly, that is super refreshing from a story telling, mechanical, and time saving angle, and is something I really wish official Pokémon games would do instead of us having to wait for a data dump to reveal you have to take your guy to a particular spot under a particular tree at a certain phase of the moon while landing 3 crits in a row and singing The Macarena backwards. Like seriously, an NPC being like "hey, here's a rare candy, why not try evolving X here in this little spot?" Is not only immersive, it just makes more sense! It's simple, but brilliant! Honestly great job to the devs here.
As far as anything else mechanically speaking, the game also features a mobile PC like in Realidea System, and of all things, the selective multi exp share similar to the one from Opalo. I'm gonna guess that feature must be from a special build of Pokémon essentials or something. I really enjoy it and I think more fan games should make use of it.
So far, gyms and exploration are sort of straight shots, but I think that's okay given the story it wants to tell. And let me tell you, the story is looking interesting so far. I can't wait to see where it goes!
I'll probably make a team shot of the Fakémon I've used so far soonish. I'd definitely say check it out if you can- although I gotta say, hunting down the EN translation was ROUGH. It's a good translation, minus dex entries, but it is R O U G H finding it.
Good luck to both the Mazah and Safar teams! I can't wait to explore your fully made regions someday!
