Hey guess who stopped being busy/a bummer, it's me and the girls are having a CHAT (not porn)

Faline keeps her eyes unfocused on the scene in the mirror: a reflected version of herself in a long robe, her hair down and in sections as her lady’s maid brushes it. They are a blur, blue and yellow in a room of brown and green and gold.

When she hears the window in the next room swing open, the world comes together in a snap.

“Dratted window,” says the maid. She sets the comb down on the dressing table, then walks through the door to the bedroom that Faline shares with her husband.

There is a silence, a few moments too long, and a prickle settles along Faline’s spine. Just as she draws breath to ask the maid if she is all right, she hears the sound of a window being shut.

“Apologies, m’lady,” the maid says as she returns and the prickle spreads to her arms, to her legs, to her scalp. Faline’s whole body tenses as the maid steps behind her chair and picks up the comb once more.

She watches the maid as she starts to work, suppressing a wince when the comb catches and tugs at her hair. After a moment, the maid looks into the mirror.

She smiles. Her eyes are silver.

“Who are you?” says Faline.

The maid uses the comb to move hair behind Faline’s ear, hair that she had carefully put in front before in preparation to braid it. She then repeats the gestures with her fingers.

“That’s a dull question,” the maid says with the wrong voice. The maid smiles and a flicker of light later, she has a different shape: dark hair and silver eyes on a face covered with a smattering of freckles, all framed by long pointed ears.

Faline has seen this woman before. She is one of many that come and go from her husband’s office, perhaps a bit more frequently as of late. She knows that a new plan is being formed, but Enver has demurred on the details and Faline has not seen fit to press. Not yet, anyway.

Perhaps she should have.

“Indulge me in answering it,” Faline says.

“I will have to have words with your husband for not introducing me. I am the Chosen of Bhaal.” The woman strokes her hair again and Faline ignores the tingle it sends down her neck. “And I have been so eager to meet you, Faline Gortash.”
