We've had so much rain and storming that I didn't put the photo cams out in the last couple of days, but the Birdsy cams are all rolling. This was earlier today, Orioles are on the move but I am getting a nice and steady stream. They don't like to share!

It's fall migration time, which means there are all sorts of birds on the move headed to their wintering grounds! If you want to know how to make your yard an oasis for wild birds, whether they're staying for the winter or just passing through, Avian Neighbors: Being a Good Steward to Backyard Birds will get you started. Paperbacks and ebooks available at https://rebeccalexa.com/avian-neighbors/

It's Oct. 11th, and I spotted a dark-eyed junco today! Typically, these tiny birds arrive much later, and are harbingers of winter temperatures, but every year is a little different. So, this year I guess I'll enjoy their arrival while I'm still feeding ruby-throated hummingbirds, and harvesting tomatoes! Time to update the dark-eyed junco blog that I wrote last year, too.

Hangars-On--Part B
Hangars-On–Part B
As we transition to Fall with hints of color in the foliage, there are fewer birds and most are silent. There are migrants moving through and some locals who have yet to leave. Here’s a few shots from the last couple of days. A few Mallards hang around, but most will leave soon. I got to finish molting before I’m going out in public. I hope he returns when the sun is out! The Birdsy AI identified him correctly, which is something many birdwatchers have issues with.

The thing about Nona the Ninth that really blows my tits off is the politics.
Like up until now yeah, we knew our protags lived in an empire, and we got a few tantalizing peeks at how it worked, but it was mostly just a Fantasy Empire In Space
And then wham! Nona opens with our main girl living as a refugee in a badly destabilized modern colonial state recently torn apart by the struggle for independence and controlled by an uneasy coalition of armed militia and it's like. Oh.
So it's an empire empire.
