Simon has been engaging in what he likes to call "exposure therapy"; in essence he'll go to Soap's room, usually when he's there, and stare at the snake until he feels his lips start to burn and twist. When he's feeling particularly brave he'll go sit on the bathroom floor and stare down the cobra, False cobra he reminds himself. That one is usually better, it's smaller and objectively otherworldly. It's hard to justify having a panic attack over a purple snake half as long as his arm. He's been getting better, the burning turns to a subtle itch to a barely noticeable twitch. It took five hours of sitting in cold tile to get even the slightest reaction last time, watching Hugo cruise around his enclosure while Johnny slept soundly in the other room. Hour six and he does something stupid.
He knows the falsie can't hurt him, no worse than a bee sting if he lets it chew him up, he read. He'd seen Soap handle him, seen the love in his eyes as he looked at him. He doesn't really realize he's done it until he hears the click of the glass door hitting home. And now Simon is frozen watching the snake come forward to investigate him, can feel the flicks of its tongue flicking over his gooseflesh. His lungs start burning, watching the snake flare out its neck hovering above his palm. His scales are wet from where he'd been swimming as he inches carefully onto Ghost's arm. The texture brings him back to the present, incredibly smooth and pleasantly warm to the touch from the warm water. Ghost shakes his head and looks down. Hugo is exploring his lap at a leisurely pace, poking his head into the folds of material in his sweats. Eventually he finds the stretched out pocket and in a flash he dives in and curls himself up as pleased as punch. After that, his exposure therapy takes a different turn and, with Soap's permission, he even takes Hugo to the break room in the dead of night to meet the goldfish (safely on the outside of the glass of course).
One day Soap approaches him with a pleased hop in his step and announces that he found someone for Hugo. Ghost isn't upset. He's not. He knows how Johnny's operation works, Hugo was never going to be a permanent resident...but it just feels so soon.
Soap gives him the details and a week later they've set a meeting in the parking lot of the local Tesco's. Hugo is leisurely curling through Ghost's fingers, distracting him from the exposed feeling of just a black medical mask, as Johnny watches with a small smile on his face that's slowly disappearing as the time crawls past fifteen minutes late. At half an hour late a loud car peels into the lot with a screech, making a beeline toward their borrowed pickup and pulling to a stop far far too close to Johnny for Simon's comfort.
The kid that gets out of the car is tall and lanky with dusty blond hair that's seen more gel than shampoo in the past several weeks. He's young, younger than Simon had expected and from the contemplative frown on Johnny's face younger than he expected too. He's early twenties, 24 at the oldest. He also reeks of cigarette smoke, not that Ghost himself is the perfect role model for lung health but he's not chain-smoked like that since he was a teenager with something to prove.
"Ay sup bruv! Sorry I'm late traffic's a fucking bitch." The kid claps a hand on Soap's back. "Where is it?" Soap is opening his mouth to answer but he's cut off by the next outburst. "Fuck mate you're holding it? That's fucking ballsy, mad respect! Big lad like you, probably take a while before it offed you though yeah?"
The urge to put a bullet through this cocky little wankstain is a loud chant in the back of his mind.
"Not worse than a bee sting." He growls under his breath.
"S' a Cobra innit?" The kid snarks.
"False Water Cobra." Soap corrects and Ghost can hear the click of his teeth as he spits out the words.
"...still venomous though right? Your post said it was venomous."
A pregnant pause fills the air as Soap and Ghost make eye contact. Silent communication flies between them, a language learned in a landscape of fire and death. The slightest twitch, a shallow nod.
"We're done here." Ghost snarls as let's Hugo slither into his pocket, crossing his arms.
"Oi! I dunno what you think you're doing freakshow but I'm not leaving without my fucking snake." The kid reaches ominously into his pocket.
The little shit makes it a single step forward before a heavy hand clamps down on his trapezius.
"Ah dinnae think yeh understand. We're done, aye?"
Ghost feels a grin twitching on his lips as he watches pain twist up the youth's pointed features, watching Soap twist him around and shove him into his car with little more complaint than a pained yelp.
When they're back on base Ghost lets out a small breath of relief when Hugo is safely returned to his palaudarium.
Laying with Johnny curled up on his chest later that night he feels more than he hears a small laugh.
"Yer attached to him now."
He heaves a great long-suffering sigh.
"Less of a brat than you are, made it easy."
His Johnny laughs loud and clear and if his brain is turning with plans of rearranging his room and researching plants then that's between him and god...for now.

Animal of the Day!
False Water Cobra (Hydrodynastes gigas)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Smithsonian's National Zoo)
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Central South America
Size (Weight/Length)- 4 kg; 2.4 m
Diet- Small mammals; Fish; Amphibians; Reptiles
Cool Facts- True to its name, the false water cobra isn’t a cobra at all. Like cobras, these snakes have a hood around their head that puffs up when threatened. Unlike cobras, instead of lifting their head off the ground they sort of just lay there and hope you leave them alone. False water cobras prefer a marshy habitat with plenty of places to swim and burrow. Their venom is potent to fish and small mammals but less so to humans. You can survive an initial bite with some swelling and bruising but shock can be common after the fact. False water cobras are popular in the pet trade due to their relatively docile nature. However, their numbers are slowly declining due to illegal gathering from wild populations.
Rating- 12/10 (Would prefer to live in its native homeland.)

Snake Swag Bracket Round 1
Tumblr media
Here we have a pair of rear-fanged venomous snakes! Mangrove snakes (Boiga dendrophilia) and false water cobras (Hydrodynastes gigas) have fixed fangs at the back of their mouth used to subdue prey as they eat. Although they are both venomous snakes, neither is considered a threat to humans, although their venom can cause pain, swelling, and irritation in and around the bite it is typically nonlethal to humans. In addition, rear-fanged venomous snakes must 'chew' their venom into prey, rather than being able to inject venom with one quick bite. Mangrove snakes are found in southeast Asia on the mainland as well as several surrounding islands. Nocturnal snakes, they spend the majority of the day resting and basking high in the trees, and will come down to the forest floor at night to hunt for food. False water cobras were named for their threat display of 'hooding up' by flattening their heads to appear larger, similar to a cobra--although this behavior is not exclusive to cobras, and is seen across many different species of snakes! They are native to South America, and found in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. They can be difficult to keep in captivity as they require very large enclosures--they can grow to be up to 8 ft long--and they are very active, curious snakes that will burrow, climb, and swim!

It is I.
Snake Nerd, here to tell you more about snakes. This one is gona be a bit more scientificly dense, but very interessting.
Today’s fact, Snake teeth and Fangs.
There are four different types of teeth/ fangs. Or better like one type of teeth and three types of fangs.
Frist are the non-venomous snakes. These are called aglypen snakes. These snakes have no fangs, just normal teeth. See your Pythons, Colubridae, Boa and every other non-venomous snake.
Tumblr media
Next are solenoglyph snakes, these are the snakes that come to mined when thinking about snake fangs. The Fangs of these snakes can rotate by 90 degrees, when their mouth is closed the fangs are nicely tucked in the mouth. If they open their mouth their fangs jut out by a pretty good amount.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are your Vipeirdae and Crotalinae. Depending on the species of snakes the fangs can be 2cm to 5cm long (google won’t cooperate so I don’t know what it is in inch)
Third are proteroglyph snakes. Here the fangs are fixed in their position in the mouth, only able to move a little bit. This is why these fangs aren’t as long as the fangs of solenoglyph snakes. Snakes that fall in this category are cobras, Elapidae and Hydrophiinae.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this one, if you know this one I’m going to be very impressed. This is the secret third type of venomous snake that’s not very well known. Opistoglyph snakes. They’re venomous snakes who’s fangs are located further back in of their mouth, right under their eyes. Also, the fangs are in pairs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
God examples for this type of snake are hognose snakes and False water cobra. (one day, one day I will have false water cobra, and I’ll love it)
As you can see, you have quite the choise when it comes to your Naga!boys. Plus depending on the fangs it could make for some cool characterization, potentialy.
I am absolutely making notes about teeth and how they could translate to the naga boys! Not to mention a good host of snakes that can be used as bases for such creatures hehe I'm also fascinated with the fangs that can be tucked away before springing back out—imagine a wide grin framed by two wicked fangs!
Augh, eats all these facts like desert

Nobody:
Absolutely nobody:
Me, way to obsessed with both snakes and Hazbin Hotel: I think Sir Pentious is not actually a cobra, and is actually either a false cobra, false water cobra, or a possibly hognose snake! I’ve come to this conclusion based on WOG tidbits, his onscreen behavior and body language, and his design. In this essay, I will-

what's the issue with spider ball pythons exactly? i'm not planning on getting one but your tags are the first time i've heard there being problems
They're the original wobbler. These days there are many genes that wobble, but spiders were the first. Wobble = snake lacks motor control and ability to tell up from down, leading their movements to be unnatural, frightening, "corkscrewing" and at rest they wobble around.
For decades people have insisted this was fine, it could be bred out. People insisted that THEIR spiders didn't wobble, only the spiders of THOSE OTHER BAD BREEDERS wobbled. They just needed some outcrossing and it would be fine, which they had "responsibly" done!
Of course none of this was true. Spiders have been around for ~25 years and they wobble now just as much as they did back then, and they're one of the most outcrossed, possibly THE most outcrossed, gene in ball pythons.
The gene that causes the pattern mutation also causes an inner ear deformity leading to terrible balance issues. It is also random, as in the baby can have it worse than the parent, and vice versa. Some have it so bad they have to be euthanized at hatching. It can't be bred out, they all have it to varying degrees.
Relevant study
If the "we can breed it out!" and "MY spiders DON'T wobble, unlike those other bad breeder's spiders!" rhetoric sounds familiar, it should. You will hear that same song regarding any mutation that is tied to something detrimental, and breeders who invested thousands into their projects are seldom easily deterred.
Literally the only case I've heard of where the pattern/color mutation was NOT tied to the detrimental effect is the granite morph in carpet pythons. When this morph was new, it was inbred to hell and back which lead to kinked spines and short lifespans, weakness, failure to thrive, etc. It was so bad that the entire gene was nearly lost at one point. After more people got this morph and outcrossed it appropriately, these negatives disappeared and the gene is much healthier these days. These weaknesses were due to the inbreeding, not to the morph itself, and it did not take long to figure this out.
(One thing of note, I do think the lavender morph in false water cobras can be saved much the same way, but jury is still out. Right now they have the same problems the granite carpets did, but they were similarly inbred and mass produced horrifically.)
Now if I had to list every detrimental morph where inbreeding wasn't the cause, and it WAS the gene, well, the list would be long as hell and growing.

INTRODUCING:
The Elemental Serpentine AU!
In this AU, each Serpentine species is getting reworked! They're all getting new, more varied designs, and I'll be making a lot of new species to align with each elemental power in the show!
I'm also reworking much of the lore surrounding Serpentine, since what we are given is inconsistent, and quite vague.
As of now, I have new designs for each of the Serpentine species that appear in the show! Designs for new species to go with the missing elements will come later.
Please note that this AU is a work in progress; the designs I have here are subject to change!
Details about each species are included under the cut~~~
GENERAL AU STUFF
I decided that I want all of my Serpentine to have tails, instead of just the generals. If they have legs, they end up looking more like anthro lizards than anthro snakes. I'll let them keep the arms, though.
In the show, the Serpentine are covered in intricate details. As nice as these details are, they make it difficult to draw Serpentine in 2D. So, more for my own sanity than anything else, the patterns are getting toned down.
CONSTRICTAI - EARTH
I genuinely hate a lot of aspects of the canon design for the Constrictai. Their non-existent necks and random spikes make them look more like horrible little dinosaur gnomes than snakes. For my design, I let them keep the spikes, but moved them so they weren't sticking straight up out of their head. Most important of all, I gave them necks.
Inspiration: Boa constrictor
HYPNOBRAI - MIND
In spite of how it may seem, I did not remove this species' hood! Real snakes with hoods only 'hood up' as a threat display. I decided to incorporate this into my AU. It's not visible here, but my design has false eyes on the back of the hood. I noticed that the original design has snakes in the patterns, so I've incorporated that in a few places. I think I may have gone too far with simplifying their design, so we'll see how it changes as I continue to iterate.
Inspiration: Spectacled cobra
VENOMARI - POISON
This one has received some of the biggest changes in the AU. I felt the Venomari's extra eyes looked quite out of place in my new lineup, since it would be the only one out of a now larger number of species to have four eyes, so I lowered the number to two. I don't like the original colour scheme all that much, so I decided to take a page out of the poison dart frog book and make them bright and varied in colour. They can have a variety of colours and patterns. Like the Hypnobrai, the Venomari have a hood that can't be seen in this image.
Inspiration: African bush viper
FANGPYRE - FORM
I changed the shape of the head pretty drastically, but the colours are the same, even if the pattern is different.
Inspiration: Coral snake
ANACONDRAI - LIGHT
The colour-changing ability of the Anacondrai is so underutilized that I literally forgot about it until I started rewatching the show with my brother, so I've decided to make it more prominent. In this AU, Anacondrai change colour as a method of communication and expression. They can also change their colour to disappear, just like in the show.
Inspiration: Green anaconda, RainWings from the book series Wings of Fire
VERMILLION - FUSION
Each of the Serpentine are born or hatched without visible limbs, appearing as ordinary snakes to the untrained eye. While most species undergo a metamorphosis at a young age, emerging with two limbs, Vermillion do not, and remain in a larval state for their entire lives.
Inspiration: Garter snake, axolotl
MAARAY - WATER
According to the fan wiki for Ninjago, these guys are supposed to be eels, but I thought they were Serpentine when watching the show, and they have the same head model as some of Aspheera's lackeys, so I've made the executive decision to make them Serpentine in this AU.
Inspiration: Yellow-lipped sea krait

Hello to the beautiful false water cobra! We always love to see a great big colubrid, and with lengths up to 9-10 ft you definitely qualify! Not to mention your wonderful hood that you display when you need to look like you're extra big and tough, like the cobra of your namesake! Threat displays like this are fantastically clear ways to communicate when you are feeling stressed and upset and need the human cooing over you to take some big steps back! But today we're not here to talk about that fantastic hood, but rather what's underneath it! Reptile keepers around the world enthuse about just how incredibly smart and inquisitive you are, a delight to watch as you actively explore your environment, and a rewarding companion to bond with! For your admirable intellect, we gladly present to you Snake Swag Bracket's BRAINIAC award!

what on earth is a poop snake
Content warning this is super gross
One time on one of those previously mentioned school retreats, my friend and I walked past the bathroom (whose door had been left open) and I spied something that immediately had me shrieking "what the fuck is that?"
Inside the bathroom, on an open stall, was this huge thing peeking out of the toilet, rearing its head over the rim.
Now when you live inside the habitat range of the biggest venomous snake in the world, the King Cobra, you treat any snake you can't immediately identify as something you gotta warn people about immediately. I grabbed my friend and shook them in a panic, sure that there was a massive snake inside that toilet, and one of us would have to keep an eye on it so someone wouldn't open their pants to an incredibly deadly surprise.
But then my friend went "It's not moving" and that got me to look at it again too. I didn't expect it to lunge at us standing at the doorway from all the way across the room or anything, but surely a snake that had noticed intruders would at least try to move away right? It wouldn't just sit in a toilet with its head peeking out.
That made me realize maybe i'd mistaken someone sticking a large tree branch into a toilet for a snake or something, so I walked closer to take a look; at this point one of my classmates had already destroyed a toilet and another had broken a door knob, so this would probably have been another case of property damage.
And then the fucking smell hit me when I entered the bathroom and I realized what it was.
Some highschooler, through some unknown but unholy combination of technique and diet, had shat a veritable log into the toilet.
It was massive, both in length and in girth. The bottom went into the toilet's drain but it was so long and thick it could stand from the bottom of the toilet, get out of the water, and peek right over the rim, its sheer weight forcing gravity to dip its "head" lower and making it look something like a snake in the toilet if you saw it from outside the bathroom.
"What the fuck!" I screamed again, gripped by a completely different fear this time. What 17 year old could have done that? I had seen horse poo that looked puny next to that thing!
My friend was howling with laughter at my false snake alarm, but I was scarred for life. Years later I found myself in a haunted bathroom and it was still less scary than that (literal) shit.
Anyway my school got banned for life from that place, though if you ask me we should have also been asked to pay extra to the janitor who had to clean that mess up, because I doubt something of that size could have been dealt with by flushing alone.

Are false water cobras ethical to keep? This Reddit post seems really cool, but I’m not sure if it’s okay to keep something venomous like that
https://old.reddit.com/r/Aquariums/comments/13py3du/the_aquarium_1000l_part_of_my_snakes_enclosure_i/
Link for everyone - I simply have to gush about how amazing this enclosure sounds! A big aquarium portion where the snake can dive and swim, plus a large land area...looks fantastic.
But anyway, yes, false water cobras are fine. They are venomous but it's not medically significant to humans - their venom is usually even less bothersome than a hognose bite. The biggest note with them is actually a husbandry one; they're not extremely difficult snakes but they are semi-aquatic and do need space to swim.
Falsies are one of my someday snakes. I'm just waiting until I can make an awesome duel aquarium/land enclosure like the one in this post!
