The same unnamable feeling crept through Silco's gut. He locked it down; his voice held an offhand coolness. "Yours?"

"She says so."

"You believe her?"

Vander shrugged.

Silco fought his kneejerk instinct to probe. He and Vander, whatever intimacy they'd shared in their salad days, was done. They never spoke of it. Never even alluded to it. Sometimes it felt almost unreal to Silco, like something that had happened in a dream. Other times, he felt the unspoken truth kept him and Vander closer rather than apart. To share secrets was one way to share a body, wasn't it?

Except—again—came the wedge.

Lika.

Silco wished he could be a better man. Lika wasn't the bad sort. Though still pitifully skinny from the diet of gruel in the Lanes, she'd matured into a vivacious beauty, naturally witty, with an inventor's mind. She worked as a gadgeteer in Benzo's shop, and like any girl who'd come from a long line of wanderers and wastrels, she had a talent for making mischief.

But she also made good. When Rolak stole a shipment of copper ingots from Benzo's store, Lika set up booby traps along the route to the harbor. The poor bastard didn't make it past the third trap. Afterward, Benzo hailed Lika as his rescuer. Silco got the distinct impression he would've dropped to his knees and proposed to her then and there.

Lika had her eye elsewhere.

For all her good nature, she was an opportunist to her core. She liked having men—big, tough men—on her string. It was, as Silco would confirm later in his own life, Like money in the bank.

And Lika always wanted more.

Vander was top dog in the Lanes. Nobody could match him for sheer strength. With Silco's return, they were attracting attention from all corners. Notoriety had its flipside: adoration. Their smuggling operation raked in coins. And Silco's gift as a fixer gave them access to a network of contacts across the city.

None of this had failed to rekindle Lika's love-light. Vander was her best chance at getting what she truly craved: the good life.

And Vander?

He'd fallen for Lika all over again—and Silco hated it. Hated the mysterious power inherent in Lika's swaying hips, the lilt in her laugh and the swing of her hair. Hated the way it reduced Vander into a whipped-dog passivity. All she wanted from Vander was sex and profit. Yet the latter anchored into an affection that sunk deeper into Vander's heart, while the former had him showering Lika with gifts at every turn: necklaces, tools, trinkets.

She had a ridiculously childish thing for stuffies. Vander was so cunt-struck he’d started a collection for her, one for each letter of the alphabet. He'd just gotten to L when Silco had returned to the Lanes.

Love.

It's a funny thing, isn't it?

Funny like a brain tumor.

Flatly, Silco said, "Stick around too long, they start playing games. I always warn you."

"So you do."

"I also warn you to pay the Protection Racket."

An Undercity saying. It meant: Use a sheath.

Vander tsked. "All the Piltie cunny's spoiled you, Blut."

"I barely got any," Silco retorted. "And what I got wasn't worth the trouble."

Vander chortled, with overtones of Sure, pull the other one.

"It's true. Like screwing a mannequin. They don't move right on the dance floor. They barely move at all on a mattress."

"An' when they come, they announce—"

"I'm arriving, I'm arriving!" Silco said in shrill falsetto, beating Vander to the finish line.

They traded the old handshake of laughter. The burden receded from Vander's shoulders. Silco took the other man's emotional temperature, and dared, "Give me a sweetheart from the Lanes any day."

Vander grinned, a good-natured reflex. "Any day."

Their stares met. The moment prolonged itself into tantalizing possibility…

Hastily, Vander broke eye contact.

ohhhhh. the soft vocals through that crackly radio filter in the beginning is so beautiful? and the soft strumming of the guitar is so perfect. ‘doll me up in my bad luck / i’ll meet you there’ is suuuch an intriguing line. the introduction of the drums being louder and then backing off as the clear vocals come in? insane. BASS pretty yummy wowowow. god i swear i wanna eat these vocals. oooooooo soft to RASPY!!!

OH FUCK this one is immediately different!!! huuuuuge guitar moment at the very beginning of it! such a masterful change in tone and tempo. THE FULL STOP. GOD YEAH. these lyrics and the riff that reappears in between the lines??? yum yum yum. i swear the little bit of whine in dave’s voice especially during the chorus is soooooooo lovely it’s so perfect for the song i think especially when his voice is so raspy for a lot of the song??? OHHH stripped back layered vocals on the ‘temper’ repeated lines?? DAVE SCREAMING? god this fucks!!!! so cathartic!!!!! and right back to the chorus??? perfect. the drums are so solid and the bass and guitar work so well together this FUCKS! adore the repeating ‘fall in fall out’ parts!!

OOOOO stripping back the heavy guitars dave’s voice is SHINING with the strumming guitar n full bass. drums there just enough to notice and love. BACK to the heavier instrumentals with soft vocals that move into rasp??? WHEW. also these lyrics hurt as well!!! it’s such an emotive album so far but it’s SO good? OH little falsetto moment in the layered backing vocals. TRULY living for the slight whine in his voice i’m TELLING you. oooooooo cute lil guitar moment. the lead is so Clear and it’s just breaking out of the muddy bass and rhythm. DRUM BREAK AGAIN. RASPIER HEAVIER VOCS this is insane!

acoustic guitar strumming beautifully with just the loveliest lyrics. there’s something along with the guitar that’s just a little darker and deeper and it does feel so nice. very grunge very beautiful. cymbals slowly phasing in. yummy. they sneak up and its beautiful!!! these vocals too are so insane to me. so gentle so evocative!!! they truly can do it all. why is my heart breaking at this album i haven’t even gone through a breakup like ?!!?!! sorry again so entranced by these cymbal runs. yum. guitar is nice and jangly at some parts but so soaring and clear too?? god.

thoughts: foo fighters truly kings of changing up the tone and brightness of the song. like fully switching from gentle strumming and piano to fully-fledged hard rock. muddy grimy guitars and bass to light and flowing power ballad moments. screaming to falsetto!!! how. wonderful. also they’re just so intriguing and creative with riffs and melodies that it’s so lovely to listen and see where the song goes! this album is truly breakup album ever. WOW. thank you kk for changing my neurochemical structure.

If either she or Joel had been more than a mediocre cook at best, it might have been a sacrifice to let Ted have full command of their kitchen. As it was, the mouth-watering scents drifting into the living room more than made up for any weirdness related to listening to Ted in the kitchen, which was a mixture of brisk chopping, show-tunes, at least half sung in a pitch-perfect falsetto, and the plosive sound of Ted beat-boxing. Grace couldn’t say it was exactly homey, except that they were at home and so was Ted, sautéing onions, so by default, there they were.

Joel wasn’t bothered. He and Ellie sat together on the couch, his guitar on Ellie’s lap, and he was guiding her where to put her hands and how to strum the strings, offering plenty of encouragement, like that, right, you got it, interspersed with instructions and corrections, Ellie lifting her head and giving him a smile like a summer sunrise when she coordinated a chord and the melody for a bar or two. Joel wasn’t as given to grins as Ellie, but his pride and delight in her were evident if you knew what to look for, which Grace felt confident she did, and it was clear Ellie had actual musical talent, since Grace was already able to recognize the song Joel had chosen, Ellie’s halting pace outweighed by the accuracy of her ear, hearing the lyrics Are you goin’ to Scarborough Fair sung in Joel’s baritone within her mind, despite Ted’s competing So they called me a cock-eyed optimist channeling, with eerie similarity, Mary Martin’s champagne bright Broadway soprano.

Tommy looked up now and then, when Ted hit a note pitched high enough to make a dog whine, but his hands, whittling a rook for the chess set, didn’t falter. She and Beard were playing with what they had now, the kings exquisitely carved, each of them reminding Grace of Joel in a different way, the bishops a little flashier than she would have expected, the knights showing Tommy’s fondness for the Jackson Appaloosas over Arabian thoroughbreds. The pawns were bottle-caps and corks. It was a work-in-progress. Beard was an ideal opponent, his expression purposefully unreadable but hardly much different from his usual, as he had embraced an implacable impenetrability as a weapon to be deployed in protecting Ted, possibly even prior to cordyceps. He didn’t crow when he took a pawn, didn’t gloat when he put her in check. Didn’t sulk when he lost and gave her a real smile, wonderfully, painfully sweet, when she used one of the more esoteric gambits, tearing up when she’d opened with the Sodium Attack, which he revealed had been a favorite of one of his favorite people, his tone making it obvious it was someone he’d lost. Tonight, the rain pelting against the windows, Grace had chosen Giuoco Pianissimo, and Beard had nodded in appreciation, the gesture almost obscured by his exuberant whiskers and the shawl collar of his heavy wool sweater.

Maria, a hand laid on her belly, backlit by the fire’s merry flames, was sleeping. Napping really and she’d claim she was only resting her eyes when they woke her, which would only happen when the meal was ready, everyone in an unspoken agreement to keep within a frequency she would sleep through, no matter how valiant a victory Beard might achieve or how frustrated Ellie might get when she couldn’t get the fourth chord exactly right. Ted, in addition to producing dishes that should have been impossible with the ingredients on hand and equipment available, had a preternatural ability to keep the noise emanating from the kitchen at a volume Maria would sleep through. She was due soon or maybe she’d already passed her due date; they didn’t have a proper midwife and Grace’s memory of OB was sketchy enough combined with Maria’s irregular cycles that she gauged the imminence of delivery by the curve of Maria’s belly and how often she put a hand to the small of her back when she walked.

It seemed like an evening that could run on forever, Joel talking quietly to Ellie, Beard contemplating his next move, his dark eyes scanning the makeshift chess board with serious intent and a resonant sense of enjoyment. Tommy pricking out the scalloped hem of the black queen from a piece of mahogany scavenged God knew where, the rain and the darkness outside, not clamoring to come in, but a reminder of their secure contentment. The firelight gold and honey wherever it touched someone’s face or hands, an antidote to ghosts or some exchange that balanced the accounting between the worlds, now and Before, grief and ease, and then Ted called out, “Soup’s on and that ain’t a figure of speech, though it’s really a burgoo, Mr. Magoo.”

Fortunately, Ted’s authentic burgoo did not run to squirrel and they all had a taste for venison.

“Better drink up, Y/N. The next one will make you dance again.” Wong laughed as he took a sip of his drink.

“Ugh, you know me so well.” you groaned and playfully rolled your eyes. The first notes of More Than a Woman by Bee Gees faded in.

Stephen met you in the middle of the floor and he offered his hand.

“I’m no John Travolta, but would you do me the honor?” he asked, his eyes soft against the vivid and dancing disco lights. You took his hand and sidled closer to him.

“Even if John asked me at this same instance, I’d dance with you instead.” you replied, letting your feeling slip. You quietly blame the alcohol.

“Oh, say you’ll always be my baby, we can make it shine…” Stephen sang close to your ear.

“We can take forever, just a minute at a time.” you said, echoing the lyrics of the song.

“More than a woman, more than a woman to me…” Wong sang, and watched the two of you sway and spin around. He smirked to himself, knowing his plan was working.

He was right, he was no John Travolta. Because you doubt Travolta would ever hold you so close, so close you could almost feel his heartbeat. No, Stephen would never be like him. Stephen held you close to him, and at first you feared he might feel your racing heartbeat. You were afraid that your heart would betray you at that very moment. But you felt infinitely better when you felt his heartbeat. It was also fast, just like yours.

Could it be the adrenaline of dancing? Or could it be he’s feeling the same? Could it be the two of you are just bumbling fools who love each other but are scared to admit it? You lightly shake your head at the thought.

You look up at him and gazed at his eyes, you saw his dark pools slowly growing and your eyes probably did the same. Stephen smiled at you and you were undone. His smile was soft and you could almost feel your heartstrings tug, your cheeks heat up. Suddenly, he started to lean in to you. He gently dipped you, and you closed your eyes.

In arms, you felt secure and safe, under his gaze you felt loved.

It was almost the perfect setting; the two of you dancing to 70’s disco under the colorful lights with Wong perfectly imitating Barry Gibb’s falsetto. Stephen wanted to kiss at that very moment; you holding on to his arms, your eyes closed and lashes fanned against your cheeks, your lips looked so soft and inviting.

But it wasn’t the perfect moment. If Wong planned for this moment for the two of you to kiss; just like in Saturday Night Fever (1977), Stephen had other plans.

“Nobody puts my baby on a corner.” he winked and you gulped. Something must’ve run through your veins, it could be the four bottles of apple flavored beer, or it might be just the mere fact that you love Stephen and you’d do anything for him.

And if he wants you to stand up on the platform with him and sing The Time of My Life with him, you’d do it. So, you pried the offered microphone from his hand, and followed him to the front of the room.

Thoughts on Xdinary Heroes' "Overload"

It's been a bit since Xdinary Heroes dropped "Overload" so thought I'd drop my opinion on it.

Zzz... - Not gonna lie, I did not get the hype with this one at first. It took a few listens for me to understand its charm. I listened to it with the English lyric video and learning the song's meaning definitely helped in my appreciation of the song. Is it my favorite song on the album? No. But I like it a lot more now than I did on the first listen.

Hair Cut - So good. Like amazing. Literally, the only cringey/objectively bad part is the "Get a haircut!" part in THAT voice. I love Gun-il and I wanted him to have more lines but this is not what I meant haha. If that line was said in a Strawberry Cake-esque screamo-type tone instead with more edge then I think it would have been waaaaay better and cringe eliminated. I want to love the song 100% cause the lyrics and the meaning of the song are super good. I love listening to the whole song then the chorus comes around and I'm like "oof". I know it will grow on me, but I was expecting show-stopping award winning from this album and show stoppers don't have to grow on you. However, the delivery, performance from the boys, and music video, and again, the lyrics (beautifully self-written by them) are more than enough to win me over. It's still a great quality song from them. A bit campy? Yes, but still good.

LUNATIC - This song was so reminiscent of western rock songs I loved listening to before I got into kpop and I adore it so much!! I'm not totally obsessed with it, but I can't find fault in it either. Solid song overall.

Crack in the mirror - One of my favorites. Not only is the song good just listening to it, I absolutely love the lyrics as well. Similar to LUNATIC, I love the 2000s rock vibes. Might be one of my favorites on the album.

GHOST - THIS is my #1 favorite on the album for sure. I keep saying it and I WILL keep saying it. I love a group that writes their own lyrics and I'm so glad that XH does their due diligence by contributing to song writing. Also, I just love the way this song sounds. Alternating between this edgy singing style and the falsettos is just soooo pleasing to the ear and instrumentally, this song is amazing too. I can see why it's not the title track cause it's not as explosive, but it is an A+ B-side to me.

X-MAS - I am such a sucker for 21st century Christmas songs. Especially Christmas songs by rock groups. I will absolutely be banging this during December. It has enough holiday vibes to make it on my Christmas playlist, but also it sets a far enough boundary from your average Christmas song for it to be played anytime of the year. The vocals are just AHHHHHHHH. So amazing. Also the beginning feels like it was sprinkled with MCR vibes. I can't put my finger on it, but it just has the vibe and I love it.

Overview - Despite any criticisms I might have said about some occasional cringe and campiness, I can't be mad at it. One of the great things about rock, is that it is unapologetically honest, loud, and rebellious by nature. And I love that Xdinary Heroes so far, at least in terms of their discography and the themes in their concepts, has stayed true to that sentiment. They're shamelessly bold and embrace the weird. Concept and genre changes are not uncommon with music artists, but I hope they always stay true to that inner weirdo rockstar because if this album did anything, it was show that Xdinary Heroes is a talented and unique group of musicians and very much so needed. It felt like the music jumped right out of a Tim Burton film and the freaky carnival/Edward Scissorhands aesthetic was something I'd have never expected but I adored it and it worked in their favor so well. The over-arching message of Hair Cut – breaking free from the darkness in your mind that holds you back (and putting that metaphor in the form of hair) is not only really genius, but so important for the youth (their primary audience) to hear. They're making their mark in the industry and I love being apart of that journey.

• Stood in the pouring rain at a county fair for an abbreviated because the weather is dangerous set • Yelled at Big Rob in the post-dangerous set meet & greet because he tried to get me to move while my sister was still in line • Made TEAM JONAS t-shirts for the Burning Up tour with my friends with colors on each shirt that matched the Disney Games team our favorite Jonas was on that summer • Refused to leave a New Hampshire hotel room ON VACATION because the Paranoid video was going to premiere and I had to see it • Stood for five hours in Rockefeller Center because the Jonas Brothers were going to sing TWO songs at the tree lighting • Made shirts for that, too • Overall, ruined several perfectly fine shirts by drawing professions of my Jonas love on them • Waited outside of MTV overnight in DECEMBER for tickets to It's On With Alexa Chung when Nick Jonas was going to be a guest • Bought the Nick Jonas and the Administration album at midnight • Downloaded a Livewire version of Stay that included a cringe-worthy 45 seconds of Nick Jonas whine-falsetto at the end • Joined the Team Jonas fan club to get pre-sale tickets to the World Tour • Never got my Team Jonas membership gift • Ran around the Seventeen Magazine offices when the pre-sale started to get last row tickets to the World Tour • Slightly regretted my membership to Team Jonas • Saw the 3-D Concert Experience at the Regal in Times Square because that seemed like the most likely spot for the Jonas Brothers to show up at a screening • They didn't show up • Learned the Honor Roll, which is not directly Jonas-related, but felt like it was required to be a Jonas fan in 2009 • Used the fancy color printers at Sports Illustrated to print Just Jared photos of Joe Jonas coming out of the gym when he got that Joehawk haircut • Flew to Texas to see the Jonas Brothers on Spring Break • Ran through downtown Houston to meet the Jonas Brothers • Refused to stand at the end of the photo line because if I was going to fly to Texas, I was going to stand next to Joe in the picture • Snuck into better seats at the Houston Rodeo • If I'm ever on a revival of Drunk History, my subject will be Disney Channel star drama from 2007-2010 and at least 27% of it will be focused on Joe and Demi • Another 12% will be devoted to Nick-Miley-Selena • Experienced genuine terror at the Rolling Stone article announcing the reunion because I thought they'd found a picture of my college dorm • Breathed easier once my husband reminded me, "there's too much Nick on that wall, there'd be more Joe on yours" • Cried at the Chasing Happiness documentary • Sat second-row with my husband and a bunch of other 30-somethings at the latest Jonas reunion tour

What musicals do you like?

...you just opened Pandora's box.

...I am so tempted to leave this post here, truly.

But, no, I love musicals, I do. Ever since I was five, I’ve been doing theatre in one way or another. A lot of who I am is a product of all the improv exercises and the show tunes that I blast in the car at every road trip. I’ve even marked the phases of my life by the musical I was into at the time. Wicked, Heathers, the Mad Ones, all very important facets of my personality.

However, I’d say the top three musicals that have made the biggest impact on me are Falsettos by Finn & Lapine, Spring Awakening by Sheik & Sater, and the Last Five Years by JRB.

Now these musicals might seem like they have nothing to do with each other. 

Falsettos takes place in the late 70s and early 80s, basking in the aftermath of a homosexual affair, a divorce, and a man who still wants it all (and afterwards tackling the HIV/AIDS epidemic);

Spring Awakening is set in late 19th century Germany, following the lives of young adolescents as they blindly navigate sexuality, mortality, and abuse;

And, the Last Five Years explores the rise and fall of the marriage of two artists as they tell their stories in an non-linear order with one in chronological order and the other in reverse, only to meet in the middle at the proposal and their wedding.

But, I think what draws me to all three of these musicals is their exploration of relationships. Falsettos talks about the non-traditional family structure, both romantically and platonically. Spring Awakening talks about the impact of society on children, showing the shame laced in social norms and its reflections in the consequences of parental failures (neglect, abuse, permissiveness, etc.). And, the Last Five Years is basically a character study between two people who were not in love with each other but rather the idea of being in love.

Another thing is that the characters that are featured in this musical are all very morally gray. The most selfish and arrogant man develops into a sensitive and exceedingly caring father and lover. The woman who was cheated on and broken up with ends up being a not so innocent victim once you inspect her arc more closely.

And lastly, in one way or another, I really do see myself in these characters. At one point, I was as controlling and paranoid as Marvin. Another, I was ecstatic and delusional as Jamie. And, seeing them succeed and fail forced me to come to terms with the uglier parts of me, while also appreciating what makes me wonderful.

Overall, I really really like character-driven plots. And I really, really, really love musicals.

Suspicious seismic activity, a conveniently dropped shield, and plain jane, human, nothing in his bloodline but teachers and dentists lab assistant Oliver is on his way to Salem University on a research grant. A week later, or earlier, and he would have had a mysterious flight delay, gotten the data he needed via email, and been back on a plane home to California within a few days. Instead, however, the wars around Salem and the magic within its city limits go haywire, drawing the attention of Oliver's thirsty mind. Though, he doesn't have the best instincts, despite his intellect; aliens, not the supernatural, is his guess. It's fine though, he's sure to catch on sooner or later. Maybe.
