real talk who else cried to the “chicken soup for the ... soul” series when u were younger
#annie.txt#i was thinking about this bc i was internal monologuing in the prev post's tags about buying a digital keyboard for myself#and remembered how my dad wanted to buy one for me a few years back but i said it was fine bc 1) i wouldn't have time or space rly to use it#while in college u feel#and also 2) i didn't realize the tech (esp in recent years) has gotten so much better ?? for weighted keyboards !! it's like a real piano ??#but then i was thinking about how if i wanted to buy it now i'd probs buy it for myself since i'm working full time#and i thought about how it'd be nice if i could have my parents still buy it for me still bc it is kinda $$$#but then i thought about how that really wasn't necessary bc again i work full time now (albeit i just started but still i make enough that#i can do it for myself and not have to ask my parents to shell out that money for me u feel)#but then i thought about how my parents always want to buy me gifts / birthday presents bc that's how my hashtag asian parents show me love#through food and attempts at purchasing me useful things#like jackets#or a 'better mattress'#even if i don't need or necessarily want them LOL#and then i got sad bc i realized they don't have many opportunities in the future to really buy me stuff or show me love in that way#and now im all teary eyed bc the idea of aging parents and#them passing away just gets me every time....#familial themes makes me cry the most consistently in media too lol#but anyways all that's to say is that it reminded me of chicken soup for the soul books bc i used to sob to those#bc man those stories are sO SAD#also unrelated to how i got here but interestingly tangential: i read those books at my piano teacher's house HAHA

I just watched the Cuties /  Mignonnes movie on Netflix and honestly, I loved it. It isn’t for everyone though. I also have a feeling that a lot of the controversy comes from whatever baggage you bring with you to the film.
It’s not the most comfortable movie to watch, first of all, but it’s not exactly vague about its message. In fact, it paints a fairly clear picture of what happens when you take a girl going through a difficult situation and tell her she has to pick between Religious Womanly Purity and being Sexy And Desired and force her to choose when she’s way too young to be making any sort of choice in either direction.
More of my thoughts below - spoilers for the film, and content warning for personal experience with childhood sexuality and how that plays into the film’s content and themes.
I think Americans will have a hard time taking this movie’s message as it is presented, because American media is so polarising -
it’s either you’re watching two adults pretend to be teenagers fucking all over the place or you pretend kids are 10000% non-sexual entities who will only magically become so at age 18, instead of realising that kids and teens are doing their own growing up and it’s deeply uncomfortable and awkward to observe how they try to copy overtly sexual content they get access to without fully understanding what it entails or why they shouldn’t be doing it.
But I think that international films can present something more nuanced, especially when it comes to sexuality - since America’s puritanical culture and overly sexual counterculture has fucked it up so thoroughly.
Cuties reminds me a bit of how I was as a kid. I got my period when I was 11. I got my first bra when I was 8. I started masturbating when I was 10. I started accessing porn when I was 12 - though to be fair it was all doujin and fanfic lol.
The movie itself happens as follows:
Main character Amy is 11 and Muslim Senegalese, and she’s shown to largely be bored with the religious proceedings, and is explicitly told in the beginning by an Auntie in the religious group about how women should be pure and modest. She’s close with her mother, but the relationship is fraught. Her father has taken on another wife, and Amy is feeling resentful and angry toward him, but Amy’s mom has to help host the wedding even though she’s clearly pained by his decision.
In their apartment, Amy meets Angelica, who’s part of a clique of girls who dress sexy and want to take part in a dance competition. Amy does everything she can to be accepted by the girls, and eventually starts dressing more sexually, learning how to twerk and dance, and essentially rebelling against the ideals that are bringing herself and her mom so much pain.
The movie alternates between showing Amy and Angelica and the other girls being sweet kids and having fun and actually being kids, and them trying to learn from adult dances and being obsessed with trying to date older boys, take pictures of a guy’s dick at school, pretending to be older than they are, etc. It’s generally not fun to see, but also kinda reminded me of being 11 and acting like I knew better when it came to Sex but definitely talking out of my ass.
Eventually Amy goes too far when the day of the wedding comes nearer, she gets her period, more expectation is placed on her by the Auntie, who kind of represents the tight knit religious community, and her place in the clique is put at risk. She steals from her mom, she tries to bribe her cousin with nudity, and posts a genital pic in a moment of desperation - all explicitly framed as awful and painful within the movie, in case you’re wondering. Her mother shouts at her, her friends reject her, and they even have a whole uncomfortable cleansing scene and bring in an exorcist to see what’s wrong with her - though the exorcist, who is a sensible man, tells them it’s definitely not a bad spirit and heavily implies that they should think about the psychological toll her family pressures have put on her.
She eventually gets onstage to dance, but stops halfway and starts to cry and runs away. It’s a fantastic and painful sequence, because you get them dancing with these bright glamorous lights and then when she realises exactly what she’s become and everything becomes dark and grey and the colours muted and ugly.
She comes home to everyone about to go to the wedding, crying for her mom. Her mom defends her the Auntie saying she was dressing like a whore and hugs her. The two reconcile, and her mom tells her it’s okay if she doesn’t want to go to the wedding - since obviously it’s been hurting her so much. The mom is going, since she’s already made that decision, but Amy changes out of her overly sexual dance clothes and puts on some regular ones, goes outside, and starts skipping rope with some kids - finally enjoying herself like a kid should.
That’s a fairly long description, but I want to emphasise that at no point does the movie say that “girls dancing sexy is good, actually”. It does, however, portray how these girls have glamourised overtly sexual media, and how Amy is particularly susceptible to it because of the pressures partly caused by her more conservative religious upbringing.
I’ve seen some people say that it puts Islam or Muslim religiousness in a bad light, but I didn’t really think that either. I’m Catholic, not Muslim, and I related deeply with Amy. She was bored and pressured by religion, but it never showed her mother to be bad for being religious, nor the rest of the women. The Auntie pressured her and made her feel bad, but it didn’t really feel any different from literally any other religion where modesty and purity is part of the teaching.
I also see people saying it demonises sexual liberation, but that’s not really it either. I think the main message is clear when you think about what that deep feeling of discomfort you feel seeing kids dress like adult women in sexy dance videos. Both Angelica and Amy were feeling pressured by stuff at home, which pushed them to try to be wanted and loved, and to rebel, and that’s how they went about it. With Angelica, her parents worked all day and were barely ever home, so she felt neglected. With Amy, her family pressures made her feel like she needed an escape, and she wanted to be accepted by the clique.
Kids with difficult situations are most susceptible to growing up too fast, whether that be having to parent your own siblings (which Amy does throughout the movie) or trying to copy adults without understanding the implications. The kids were trying to chat up teenage boys but some of them didn’t even know what a condom was.
It’s not a fun movie - though to be fair, it has its fun moments, ie the parts where the kids are actually enjoying themselves like kids do. The movie consistently reminds you that these are kids, in case you forget somewhere while watching, and that what they’re doing is fucked up, actually.
I certainly think the movie can be uncomfortable to watch and you don’t need to watch it if it’s beyond your viewing limits. I just think that the ridiculous culture war surrounding it is so tainted by bad faith. I watched this movie and saw parts of my own childhood, and a tragedy with a hopeful ending where a young girl is forced into situations she shouldn’t even be in because she felt like she couldn’t rely on anybody.
I think it’s an amazing film and I think you should watch it with an open mind, instead of acting like your only two settings are “enjoying child porn” and “children do not know what sex is and I will pretend that is true”. I think that if the movie is making you uncomfortable, you understand the movie.
And I think that the message of the movie is “Let kids be kids, stop trying to push them into decisions they’re too young to make, whether it be insisting on their womanly purity or making them think they have to be sexy to be liked.”
But that’s just my take on it.

2020-2021 Animation Watch(ed)list
I haven’t posted about animation in a while that I remember, and I know a lot of my followers are into it as much as me so I decided to make a list of the animated movies and series I watched on the past year or so, coupled with my short, spoilerless take on them. Enjoy!
Organized by
Things I saw for the first time
Things I rewatched
Under a cut for the sake of your dashboards! PS: I have not added any images yet. If you are interested in knowing more about the visuals of these movies, I might make an old fashion ask-prompted imageset list.
Part One: Things I saw for the first time
The Bear’s Famous Invasion of Sicily
Movie, 2019, Italian/French
9/10, a delightful little movie with amazing visuals. It feels like an animated picture book.
One of those “plot is in the title” media! I had never heard of this before but was heavily recommended it by my family members, who all loved it! It’s a sweet story, nothing groundbreaking but the unique colorful visual style alone makes it worth it.
The Castle of Cagliostro
Movie, 1979, Japanese
10/10. Reminded me of all the books i loved reading as a child
I assume its because it’s so old and the art style and themes are so different that it gets little to no love compared to other Ghibli movies, which is a shame! It’s fun with an endearing cast and as always, great animation and music
Mushishi
Series, 2006, Japanese
10/10 three episodes in I knew it was going to be my favorite series ever
One of the few things I’ve seen I’ll describe as life-changing. It’s absolutely lovely but never toots its own horn about it. Humble, calming, emotional and surprisingly mature. It’s pretty impossible to binge due to how intense the experience is. I just want to walk in the forest now...
FMA: Brotherhood
Series, 2009, Japanese
6/10 Dissapointing adaptation of a classic story
I read the manga for this when I was in middle school and remembered loving it. The animated version does an ok job of presenting the characters and worldbuilding and has some nice action scenes but overall looks really damn cheap and just. Not very good. Seeing I already knew most of the plot I did not have the element of discovery that made me marvel so much reading the original. It’s still a nice series but I really recommend reading it instead.
Code Lyoko (s1+2)
Series, 2003, french
3/10. 1.5 being for the opening song alone
This show sucks ass if I hadn’t been watching this with my bestie I would have dropped it two episodes in. The art style is ugly the stories are always the same and the first season has a (later removed thank fucking god) LITERAL “erase any consequences” button as a plot device in every episode. If you watch it for one thing let it be the nostalgia factor of early 00s Vidya Game Plot
The Legend of Hei
Movie, 2019, Chinese
7/10. Impressive visuals and a poor story
I finally watched this, peer pressured by the load of gifsets on my dashboard! It’s a sweet movie with really impressive animation, sometimes a bit too flashy for my taste (the action sequences go so ham they become not very readable...) but the story was just ok? The setting is barely explained and you are instead bombarded with vague epicspeech about powers and stuff that made me fondly remember Kingdom Hearts lol but that asides it’s a really good time! I need to watch more Chinese movies the few I know are just delightfully off the shits in how they approach action and I love that
Hunter x Hunter
Series, 1999, Japanese
9/10. Superior to the recent one!
I first got introduced to the series via the 2011 one. Comparatively, the 99 series focuses way less on action and way more on the characters, which I love because that fits my personal preferences! Despite mediocre filler episodes and some weird slight pointless plot changes, what it changes from the original manga doesn’t have much of an impact on the characters. The animation quality isn’t always consistent including a huge art style change for an arc (???) but it’s overall pretty nice. The series really shines in the last arc it adapts.
Oban Star-racers
Series, 2006, Japanese/french
9/10 a lovely surprise
This series is completly obscure despite having been created by people famous for their other series (Cowboy Bebop, Code Lyoko that i can name) and it’s a crime! It’s a kids show but without being stupid about it who tells the story of an inter-planetary race. If you liked that one scene in the star wars prequels you know what I mean. It’s got surprisingly nice animation for a TV series, and some truly great character design. The art style is a bit unique in a not for everyone sense, but I didn’t mind it much. It’s also THE most offensively 2000s series i’ve seen in terms of visuals. y2k kids assemble
The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon
Movie, 1963, japanese
8/10. Classic fairytale format with incredible visuals
Watched this for the art style because I know it inspired Samurai Jack, and it delievered! I dont’ have much to say about this one, it’s a very simply film but it’s sweet. For my pirates out there if you want to find it in good quality with english subtitles it’s VERY hard to find. If you just want to see the looks of it, it’s on Youtube with portugese subs.
We now enter the Gobelins Shorts Zone....!
My Friend Who Glows In The Dark
10/10 makes me cry each time
Pure delight...great animation writing everything. A little short about death and friendship but not in the way you imagine!
Colza
9/10
Visual treat...homely and nice :) not far from a 10 but a 9 because nothing about it is that groundbreaking
Sundown
9/10
If you’ve ever been ten minutes from failing a group project because of a single dude you will REALLY enjoy this. Loved the colors and personality
T’as vendu mes rollers?
10/10
It’s SUCH a sweet little short I loved that one so much
Dix-huit kilomètres trois
10/10
Surprisingly well written dialog. Visuals are great but the humanity of the characters carries this to another level
Un diable dans la poche
9/10
Amazing visuals and the most tense/creepy of Gobelin shorts i’ve ever seen. Chilling
La bestia
8/10
I had some issues with the pacing. Interesting story and visuals choices but I was not fond of the art style
Goodbye Robin
5/10
Confusing but predictable. Both at once??? Yes!
Le retour des vagues
6/10
Cool animation stuff but felt pretty pointless
                                                                ***
Part Two: Things I rewatched
Ruben Brandt: Collector
Movie, 2018, Hungarian
10/10. Underrated as hell
Watched this fully blind for the first time in an animated festival and rewatched it with friends. It’s a crime I never see anyone talking about it given the amount of whining I see about the lack of both adult animation and 2D movies? This film is a unique love letter to art in the form of a weird mix of charming crime story and psychological horror with amazing visuals. I recommend watching it blind and also buying it to show appreciation for how nice it is!!! WATCH THIS MOVIE...
Mononoke
Series, 2007, Japanese
10/10 Visual/storytelling masterpiece in the weird shit departement
If you can stomach intense stuff watch this. The visuals are incredibly unique and beautiful and under the jewel tones and art direction high takes it’s a really cool horror series. My only obstacle to enjoying it the first time I saw it was how dense it is - simply put, it’s so...culturally Japanese it’s not very accessible to me who doesn’t know anything about the culture? Watching it for the second time helped understanding the stories more!
Corto Maltese in Siberia
Movie, 2002, french
9/10 but really close to ten. A great adaptation!
I’m a huge fan of the original comic so I entered this a biiiittttt suspicious it would suck but it was a really pleasant surprise! It has all the wonder and charm of the original and the animation was surprisingly good for the little budget. If you’re not familiar with the series, it’s a sort of geopolitical action/adventure movie but with it’s own really poetic vibe to it. It’s almost impossible to find online but happens to be fully on YouTube so go ham I guess?
Redline
Movie, 2009, Japanese
10/10 cinema was invented for this, actually
Every review of this movie i’ve seen gives it five stars and starts by talking about how immensly stupid it is. I’m no different. It’s a masterpiece of escalating energy with the depth of a puddle and it fucking rules. It’s free on YouTube too so there really is no excuse to not watch it. Watched it for the first time on a huge cinema screen and despite this my second rewatch on my small laptop was as/even more enjoyable. If you watch this stoned with friends you might travel to another dimension
Spirited Away
Movie, 2001, Japan
10/10 deserves the love it gets
I watched this a single time as a kid and had little memory of it! I mean it’s Ghibli you know it’s going to be good as hell but this one rly shines in how colorful and detailed it is and in it’s world! It made me remember I had a huge crush on the dragonboy as a kid. I’m gay now
Kung-fu Panda (1&2)
Movie, Usa
10/10. KFP fucking rules
Honestly my favorite franchise of the whole disney/dreamworks/pixar hydra. It’s fun as hell, doesn’t skip a single beat and has amazing animation and character designs. If something is a good time I will not care if it’s deep or not and boy I fucking love these movies
Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas
Movie, 2003, Usa
5/10 Some great some really bad and overall generic
I tend to hate american cinema and this includes that era of animation I have no nostalgia for. Sinbad is in a weird place because I love adventure stories and the visuals of the movie absolutely deliver but it’s very predictable and TANKED by the addition of the female character, pushed in your face as “look we have woman!!!” despite her writing being misogynistic as hell lol. The evil goddess rules tho. This movie would have been a solid 9 if instead of the girl the two dudes had kissed

Do you sit on the couch or the floor? I’d definitely choose the couch over the floor.
How many different colleges have you gone to? Two-- a community college and a UC. How much stress can you handle? It doesn’t take much at all before I get overwhelmed.
What is something you have to do before you go to sleep every night? I like to listen to ASMR.
How confident are you in achieving your dreams? Sigh. I’m a mess. I don’t even really have any dreams I want to achieve right now. I don’t have the motivation or the energy. I don’t have any confidence in myself. I really need to get my shit together.
What is one thing you thought you’d never do but have done or are doing? I didn’t think I’d end up like this. I didn’t have a definite plan with what I wanted to do after college, but I can assure you this wasn’t it.
Have you ever disowned a friend or family member for their beliefs? No.
At what point in your life do you think you will be truly happy? I don’t know. :(
Do you ever make pictures or shapes out of the markings in the ceiling? I did that as a kid sometimes.
Do you ever feel like your life is too boring or predictable? It most definitely is.
Do you really think money will buy your, or anyone else’s, happiness? It can certainly help. I think it could bring some happiness, like happy moments and things that bring joy, but it wouldn’t cure my depression and the other stuff I’m dealing with. It wouldn’t just go away. At the end of the day, I’d still be left with those things. The thoughts and feelings would still be there. Those feelings and thoughts hit me in the middle of doing something I like or if I’m having a good time now and I don’t see that changing if I became financially better off.
Is shopping a form of therapy for you? No.
Do you have to take medication for any mental illness? I’m not currently taking anything for it.
Do you believe it is possible for someone to change? Yes, of course.

Do you like looking at pictures? Yeah.
Have you ever set 2 people up and it actually worked out? It did for a little while.
Are you good at persuading? Uhh. Depends.
How do you feel about tattoos and piercings? I’m not super into them for myself, but I think they can be cool.
Do you care what people think? Yes and no. Not as much as I used to. I wish it was because I’m now this happy and confident person, but no.
How many dirty looks have you received today? None.
If a loved one who’d died showed up at your door, what would you do? Uh, I’d be scared and freaked out to say the least and extremely confused. I honestly don’t know what I would do or say. I think it’d be a roller coaster of emotions. If it really were them then I’d be overwhelmed and cry and want to hug them and talk to them and omg I’d be a mess. It would feel so surreal. I’d also have a lot of questions.
Do you believe the dead can have connections with the living? I like to believe they give us little signs.
How many times have you looked at a picture and wished you were there? Many times.
And your name is? Stephanie.
How do you like your coffee? With flavored creamer or cream and sugar.
Do you have a job? If so, what do you do? No.
If unemployed, what do you do to keep yourself busy? My days consist of rest, social media, TV, YouTube, Tumblr, reading, playing Animal Crossing, surveys, and spending time with family.
Top 3 favorite foods, go: Wingstop’s garlic parm and lemon pepper boneless wings, ramen, and breakfast sandwiches.
What does the person who texted you last mean to you? My mom means everything to me.
How do you feel about polyamory? Not something I would be okay with.
When did you last have sex? Was it good? Never.

Do you like sushi? Nooo.
Would you ever be able to become a vegan? No.
How often do you drink alcohol? I don’t. I haven’t drank going on 8 years now.
What was your favorite toy as a child? I was obsessed with Barbies.
Who was your first best friend? What is your favorite memory of/with them? Are you two still friends? These two girls, Crystal and Starr, in preschool. I remember they came to my birthday party at Chuck E Cheese; that was fun. No, we lost touch after preschool.
If you could see anyone in concert, living or dead, who would it be? I wish I could have seen Linkin Park with Chester. :(
If you were to get married, would you rather have a big extravagant wedding or a small private affair? Explain your answer. I don’t plan on getting married. I really just don’t see it in the cards for me.
Do you want kids? Why or why not? No.
How did you meet your newest friend? I don’t have any friends.

Does The X-Files theme song give you the goosebumps? It did when I was a kid.
Have you ever taken the batteries out of a Ferbie only to have it come alive in the middle of the night? Omg, that did happen once! Those things were freaky.
Don't you find those black cat clocks with the moving eyes and tail just a little creepy? lol yeah they kinda are.
When things get bad, are you more likely to blame yourself or somebody else? Myself.
Are most of your friends' biological parents married or divorced? Do you remember those commercials that scared kids into not playing around railroad tracks? No?
Do you ever wish your life was a sitcom, just so all your problems could be solved in thirty minutes? That would be nice.
Have you ever noticed how different everybody's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd bases are? I feel like it’s the same general idea.

Have you ever thought of how you would give your kids "the talk"? No. I don’t want to have kids.
Do you ever feel like you're missing out on something? Yeah, life.
Is your high school ANYTHING like the ones in the movies? My high school experience was nothing like that, but I feared it would be going in. Movies never paint high school in a good light.
Are you going to be totally screwed if pigs start flying tomorrow? I don’t recall ever really saying I’d do something if pigs fly or anything like that. I don’t think...
Have you ever finished taking a shower and realize that there are no dry towels? I always grab a towel beforehand.
Do you love listening to sad piano solos? Sometimes.
Was one of your grandpas in a war? My paternal grandpa was.

Have you screamed in a pillow before? For sure.
If a guy put his jacket on a puddle for you, would you actually walk on it or just look at him like he was crazy? lol aww I would be like you really didn’t have to do that now your jacket is all wet and dirty. We can just go around. I’m in a wheelchair, so that wouldn’t do much good anyway lol.
Would any of your friends dress up like a cow for a free chicken sandwich from Chikfila?
What do you like more, acoustic or electric? Acoustic.

You've reach a fork in the road, do you go left or right? Hm. Right.
Do you ignore people when you're mad/upset with them? Not flat out ignore, but I become distant and short. I don’t initiate conversation with them.
What's worse, having someone mad or disappointed in you? Disappointed, definitely.

Do you honestly believe that good things come to those who wait? It can for some. Sometimes it seems like people are really just handed stuff with minimal to no effort, but generally speaking you have to work at it. I don’t think you can just sit around waiting, you have to get up and do it. And that’s something I need to do. I go on about how each year nothing changes and I’m worried about wasting away and doing nothing with my life, but I am doing anything to try and change that? Am I taking any steps?
What do you bite on more, your tongue, lip, or nails? I’m always biting my lips. I pick at my nails constantly, but I don’t bite them.
Have you ever wanted to fast forward your life so you could see if it was worth it? Sometimes, but I’d be afraid to actually do that if given the chance.
Do you think that knowing when and how you're going to die would ruin your life? I really don’t want to know.
Did you ever feel bad for Tom and Sylvester? Jerry and Tweety did often tease and provoke. You can’t help but feel kinda bad for Tom and Sylvester sometimes.
