I hear people talk about Secret Family Recipes and I'm so baffled. My whole family can't wait to give you a recipe. You start a sentence about cooking, and twelve people have alright written their recipe down for you. No one in my family is taking a recipe to their grave. The exception is my grandma who took her lime jello fruit cocktail cottage cheese abomination with her. And honestly it's probably still written down somewhere and will be discovered in ten years by whatever bastard owns her house.

I'm dead curious about the roots of secret family recipes because it's a really foreign concept to me that I've only ever encountered in the mainland US, so,
As always please reblog, and if you're comfortable elaborating, please let me know what culture/region your family comes from in the notes

My grandmother's recipe for Hermit Cookies, a traditional New England spice cookie in the same genus as Joe Froggers and Black Cake.
Directions in North American customary units: online conversions are available but give some very different values for how many grams of raisins to a cup and grams of salt to a teaspoon, etc. The dough is very stiff and must be pressed into the pan, if it's too dry and crumbly add a little more shortening and molasses.
Preheat oven to 350°F.
⅔ cup shortening
1½ cups golden brown (light brown) sugar, packed
2 eggs slightly beaten
1 cup raisins
2 generous tablespoons molasses
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 heaping teaspoon cinnamon
1½ teaspoons cloves
1½ teaspoons nutmeg
½ teaspoon salt
2½ cups all purpose flour
Mix ingredients in the order given. Spread into a large pan (n.b. I use a 10″ x 14″/25cm x 35cm pan) and bake for 20-25 minutes, until just done. Cookies will be soft. I grease the pan with butter, the original recipe does not call for a greased pan and my sister makes them in an ungreased pan. Cut into squares or bars after cooling.

BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE:
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
50g butter
1 cup pure cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1:
Preheat oven to 170°C/150°C fan-forced. Grease a 7cm-deep 20cm (base) cake pan. Line base and sides with baking paper. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition (mixture may curdle). Sift flour, baking powder and mixed spice over butter mixture. Add almond meal and pecans. Fold until combined.
Step 2:
Spoon mixture into prepared cake pan. Smooth top. Cut pears into quarters. Remove core and thinly slice each quarter, leaving stalk and top of pear intact. Arrange over cake, overlapping slightly. Sprinkle with extra sugar. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes or until a skewer inserted in centre of cake comes out clean (cover with foil if over-browning). Stand in pan for 10 minutes. Turn, top-side up, onto a wire rack.
Step 3:
Meanwhile, make Butterscotch sauce. Place sugar, butter, cream  and vanilla in a pan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 4 minutes or until sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer for 5 minutes or until thickened. Serve cake with sauce.

Hey y'all here's my chicken and noodles recipe! If you want to make it for yourself, please go ahead!
Recipe for Cinnmxn's chicken and noodles
Ingredients:
1 whole chicken (thighs, breasts or anything else you want work too. My recipe has always used a whole one)
Aromatic veggies of your choice boiling in the pot with the chicken all day.
3 cups flour
6 eggs
¼ cup water
1 tsp salt
Spices for noodles are optional and not limited to:
Parsley
Cilantro
Italian seasoning
Basil
Garlic salt/ powder
Basically whatever you want. Usually just aromatics and stuff work fine.
To make the chicken:
Broil in the oven for 15 mins~ at 450 and watch for a slight crisp on the skin.
While you broil, boil. Make sure to add the veggies in a steamer basket here and just leave them in all day.
Boil a stockpot of water filled ½ to ¾ full.
Take chicken out of the oven and drop into the stockpot.
Let it boil for a couple of minutes and turn down to a very low simmer.
Simmer chicken until fully cooked 6~ hours or as long as it takes. I honestly start it around 10am and simmer till I drop the noodles in around 4pm.
Do not touch the chicken for the day. You can check it, but keep it covered and simmering! Trust me!
If your chicken runs low on water, be sure to add some, or just add some chicken stock! Both work well. But don't let that pot dry.
Noodles:
Mix the flour, spices, and salt/pepper in a big bowl.
Next, crack 6 eggs into the mixture and mix it all up till they're all friends.
Once they're all mixed, add in your water slowly, while mixing.
Mix the water in well and start kneeding the dough.
This process is messy, so I recommend using a silicone spatula and some flour on your hands with extra flour standing by.
Once it's all good and not too sticky, turn the dough on to a well floured surface, and knead the dough into a ball.
Divide your balls into two, and put one ball on the floured surface.
Next, start making your noodles! Take a small ball 1 inch or so of dough, and roll it between your hands. It'll form a noodle!
Each noodle should be 1- 1 ½ inches in length and 1/8th of an inch around? I'm not sure how small they are, honestly.
Keep your formed noodles on paper towels, divided from each other, and sprinkle flour on top.
Cover them with a paper towel, and continue the process till all your noodles are formed.
Dry the noodles for 4 hours~ or however long they take. I usually play it by ear because I take 2 hours of work and then let them dry while the chicken fully cooks.
When your chicken is falling apart, and your noodles are dry, drop them in, and stir, stir, stir!
Keep them off the bottom of the pot. I swear they always burn if you don't watch them.
Boil for at least 30 mins to cook and get those chicken juices in.
Serving: I usually serve them in a bowl, and in the past have used peas, carrots, and salad as a side.
I know this recipe sounds hard but it's super cheap, really yummy, and worth the work and wait! Enjoy!
