Tell me about what you’re wearing today! I’m going to dinner at my husband’s Aunt’s home, she gifted me this family heirloom necklace which was gifted to my husband’s Great Grandmother’s Aunt from Eleanor Roosevelt I think somewhere in the 1930’s. It’s a filigree butterfly, looks fancy, but from what I’ve researched it seems to be kind of costume jewelry of the time. It’s a very special piece none the less. Fanny was one of Eleanor Roosevelt’s seamstresses, so Aunt Ruth and the family found it fitting to come to me 🥰 As a designer and seamster I love this connection so much. It’s a style I love, and am a butterfly girl for sure! Today I’m wearing it with another family favorite piece, a sterling deco butterfly choker I talked my mom out of when I was in middle school - I’ve always been obsessed with this piece! Feels fun to wear them together! Mr. Davis learned to turn fallen timber into art from his father who learned from his father before him. On and on it goes in these mountains generational wisdom passed down that today I benefit from. A few days ago I mentioned to Jennifer that I would like a set as I was eyeing the giant dough bowl they’re nested in. I had already decided I was going back for the bowl when she messaged me that my measuring cups were ready to go 😍. The wood for all of this came from fallen timber on her farm. The roots of these trees once went nearly as deep into these Central Appalachian mountains I call home as my own do. When I purchase things, which I rarely do, it is always with intention that one day these pieces will be fit to pass down to my coming generations. Someday a great-grandchild will measure with these cups and knead dough in this bowl made with my own great great grandmother’s sourdough starter just as I and my daughter have. Made in America is wonderful but Made in Appalachia is twice better. I have always said that these mountains are an Eden providing nearly anything one would ever need to survive. From wild medicine, to fertile soil to grow all the things, to fresh clean water flowing in our streams teeming with trout, and forests filled with all manner of wildlife. It’s easy to see why our ancestors lingered here and did not venture into the flatlands further west. The mystery of the long-living (20 years!) family sourdough starter recipe has been solved (and found!). As it turns out, it was used primarily not for bread, not for buckwheat, but for sourdough pancakes - or hot cakes - as Grandpa liked to call them. 🥞 Tucked inside my mom’s cookbook was his original recipe that he had sent her sometime in the 1980s when the starter was living its best life alongside my grandpa. 🥞 In his everyday demeanor Grandpa could be a little stern and a little steely, but I like to think, based on this recipe and his notes, that he saved all his fun and all his joy for cooking.
