Recently, tattoos have become as commonplace as your daily cup of tea, with a quarter of Britons proudly sporting them and one in nine boldly choosing visible ink. For me, the journey into the world of body art began in my rebellious teenage years and gradually evolved into a lifelong habit. Collecting tattoos has become my game, a t...

Beginnings and Small Talk
I am pretty sure that as freshman in college, no matter the location or the people, the most common small-talk-question is “what is your major?”. I can’t recall the number of times I was asked that question but I remember being heartily sick of it by the end of the first day of orientation. Looking back, I believe the cause of my annoyance with that specific question was at least in part because of my answer; undeclared. In my young, confused mind, that boring, common, indecisive answer gave the most horrible first impression; that of being boring, common and indecisive. And, just like most young people when leaving the nest for the first time, all I really wanted was to be perceived as exciting, unique, and confident.
When I joined the Peace Corps, I discovered that there were several common small-talk-questions during orientation and training. The first and most common one was “Why did you decide to join?”. Basically, everyone answered this question using differing variations of the same response: I like to travel and I want to serve others/make a difference. Another question I enjoyed more was “where were you and who were you with when you received your invitation?” (my answer: On a train in southern spain on my way to Andorra, a small country between France and Spain, surrounded by strangers). The third most popular question was “What did your friends and family think of you joining?”. I personally loved that question mostly because most answers were stories that ended with everyone in stitches from laughing so hard but also for all the same reasons I hated the question “What is your major?” as a freshman. I loved my story. As with most volunteers, I had family and friends who didn’t want me to go or who didn’t understand my desire to travel to a foreign country with a foreign language and a foreign culture to earn next to nothing (my job title is volunteer) while working myself to the bone and living in poor conditions. Most of my family and close friends understood why I joined but most of them still didn’t want me to go. My dad was convinced I would be kidnapped, seriously hurt, and/or killed (he still is a little bit convinced I think). He bought me a switchblade. When I mentioned my intent to apply to the Peace Corps to my mom, she outright forbid me to apply. I submitted my application in early October 2013. I had just arrived in Cadiz, Spain for what started off as a semester abroad to finish my Spanish minor but which turned into a year-long excursion and the completion of my B.A. in Spanish. I heard back in late November that not only had I been accepted, but that I was going to teach biology (my other major) in Mozambique, a former portuguese colony in Southern Africa. I admit that at first I was scared out of my mind at the idea of me, a somewhat shy young adult with no professional teacher training, teaching biology to a class of high school students. In Portuguese. But as I warmed up to the idea, my excitement grew and my fear turned into anticipation. I waited until I was home for Christmas to tell anyone. I told my dad and he, as expected, was less than pleased. I received the switchblade (“if only you could take a gun with you….”) and a lecture on self defense for my going away gift. When I told my mom that I had applied, she again forbid me to go. I waited a few days then told her that I had been accepted and that I was planning on going. After several long, and often tearful conversations, she said that she didn’t like it but would support me as long as I didn’t go to Africa (“Oh the diseases!”). And here I am on the eastern coast of southern Africa, happy and healthy, and both my mom and my dad support me in all ways humanly possible. What a lucky daughter I am.
