Thoughts on Fan Convention Culture
(And maybe a call to action)
I would like to share with all y’all a letter I am sending to the organizers of the fan convention I personally attended with some of my thoughts and suggestions.
Agree? Want to do something? Contact the organizers of the convention nearest you send this exact letter: feel free to use this exact letter or use it as a jumping off point for your own.
——
Dear [fan convention organizer]
I’m reaching out as a concerned fan about an important issue surrounding fan conventions and expos that needs to be addressed.
Many fans such as myself feel that the hosts of these events need to be doing more to make them a safe experience for everyone involved. We love our celebrities and creators and want the opportunity to meet them at these events, but it is more important to us that they are treated with respect. Their attendance, much like the continued patronage of fans at conventions and expos, is a privilege: not a right. If there is a continued culture around conventions of treating the talent as a commodity to be consumed, all parties will inevitably stop participating in these events which have been an important part of fandom community for so long.
How does your organization plan to address increasing instances of inappropriate interactions during photo ops and meet and greets? Lax enforcement around this has lead to an unsafe atmosphere for all those involved from event staff to celebrity guests to the fans attending.
Here are some suggestions of actions that event hosts can take to be a leader among others in the industry to in creating a more respectful and enjoyable atmosphere for all:
- Signage around photo and autograph areas, similar to what is currently being used at some events regarding obtaining consent before photographing cosplayers, reminding attendees that nonconsensual touching is not permitted and that agreeing to a photo is not consent to touch
- Social media postings and event newsletters prior to events containing “fandom etiquette” such as:
Respecting the personal space of others
Obtaining consent before photographs
Obtaining specific consent before any touching while posing for photos
Respect language during interactions
Waiting in lines without losing your minds
How to efficiently move through entry and security
Have clearly marked lines and waiting spaces for panels and events, adequately staffed, to prevent crowd surging and competition to access event space. Turn attendees away from lining up before a designated time prior to events.
- A pop up notification of “dos and don’ts” or “know before you go” with basic expectations listed that fans must agree to before purchasing event tickets such as photo ops, autographs, or panels. As well as:
- A reminder included in all event announcement/update/reminder emails stating “with your purchase you have agreed to the following”
These expectations might include reminders of appropriate behavior during interactions and meet and greets, what is or is not allowed to be brought into the space, what is and is not allowed to be photographed or recorded, or other venue specific information.
Taking these actions and ensuring they consistently implemented will increase participants’ satisfaction with their experience and ensure continued attendance at fandom events. My hope is that fandom events like the ones you are partnered with can become a more positive space and continue thrive as an important part of fandom experience and community.
Sincerely ,
A concerned fan

Contact Info:
- Indiana Comic Con
- Many fandom conventions across the US are run by FanExpo: their general contact email is: [email protected]
Each city’s expo has their own customer service contact information for their event - consider reaching out to them directly (ex Philadelphia FanExpo and Boston FanExpo are coming up soon)
In addition: fan photos are typically run by a separate organization. It’s really important to express these sentiments to these companies as well; it’s their staff in charge of the photo ops and present for the photos.
Indiana Comic Con was paired with Celeb Photo Ops contact them here
FanExpo is typically paired with Epic Photo Ops, their general contact email is [email protected]

Did I ever tell you about the time I had my pic taken with Catherine Tate and Alex Kingston? GalaxyCon 2019 in Minneapolis. I originally went with my spouse (who has been cropped out for privacy), because David was going to be there too. He had to cancel for very good reasons, though he did Zoom in for his Q&A panel (which I also missed because we had to be home early).
Anyway, I went ahead and changed my photo session with David to one with Catherine and Alex, and even though these things only take milliseconds tops, it was one of the best photos I've had with a celebrity. Like, no one told Alex to do that with my tie. And Catherine's Q&A later was the best one I've ever attended.

Doing the Math
Seems there's a lot of chatter about how much Joseph Quinn makes at a con. So, I thought I'd do some "guesstimation" math to maybe bring some perspective to the conversation.
Let's use the Vancouver Fan Expo as our Con.
Joseph Quinn is set to appear on both Saturday and Sunday at the VFE. So, two days. According the Vancouver Fan Expo website, an Autograph signed by Joe is $100.00 and a photo op with him is $125.00.
Now, let's say everyone who plans to attend the con to see Joe will pay for both an autograph and a photo op with him.
Let's assume that 500 fans show up each day for both days of the con. That's 1,000 people and each one of them is paying $225.00 for both an autograph and a photo with Joe.
500 fans each day X 2 Days = 1,000 Fans
$225.00 per fan = $112,500 per day X 2 Days = $225,000 that JQ would bring in over that weekend.
Now, let's breakdown what his team's cut would be
Manager - 15%
FanExpo - (I've tried to find an accurate percentage of what their cut is, but couldn't. So, I'm going to guesstimate it's about 20%)
So, 15% to his manager and 20% to the FanExpo Company = 35% ($ 78,750) taken out of the original $225,000 = Roughly $146,250 in Joseph Quinn's pocket at the end of the weekend.
Now, that doesn't account for what his CAA agents might take out, but cons aren't film roles so they might not factor in this at all. Still, I think our boy is conservatively bringing home six figures per con when all is said and done. Not too shabby for a weekend's worth of work.
Again, these are merely guesstimates of what he could potentially make per con. The figures I've laid out are clearly dependent on how many fans actually buy tickets and pay for both autos and photo ops. This is all theoretical, but I think it's also insightful. Helps to see how much a celebrity can potentially make at a fan con & why cons are so lucrative and appealing to the celebrities that book to appear at them.

What is a Fan Convention?
Tumblr media
We’ve said many times that Barricades: A Les Mis Convention is a fan convention, but what exactly does that mean?
Fan conventions have been around since the 1930s in various forms. At their core, these events are gatherings of fans on a specific topic. At a convention, fans have the opportunity to present and attend panels and other programs, engage with experts, and meet other fans.
So, what is Barricades? Barricades is a fan convention dedicated to Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. Our convention is exclusively virtual, allowing fans across the globe to gather together. Each year, we invite our community to submit panels to present at the con, as well as organizing specific meetups and activities. At plenary sessions, we hear from Guests of Honor who have been invited based on specific expertise or contributions to the ongoing legacy of Les Mis. This year, our Guests of Honor include Christina Soontornvat and Luciano Muriel, and a third guest to be announced! Stay tuned!
You can learn more about Barricades and register on our website. Registration costs £12 -  scholarships are available upon request to cover the cost.

If Joe Keery really does go to German ComicCon, yay! Have fun if you go! But also:
Please be respectful. He doesn’t do stuff like this a lot because he’s been disrespected and mistreated in the past, and a lot of questions are repetitive. Don’t ask questions about his personal life or his hair. Don’t ask too many ship questions.
Maybe this is niche, but if you have the chance, ask him about stuff we’ve never/seldom heard him talk about, like:
How did you get into playing hockey in high school, and what about hockey appeals to you? Do you have a favorite player? If you know how to ice skate, do you know how to roller skate?
Do you have a favorite Steely Dan album or song, and why? Was Steely Dan an inspiration on Decide at all?
Can you give us your definitive ranking of La Croix flavors?
What was it like filming Marmalade/Finalmente L’alba/Fargo?
Have you been reading anything good lately? What’s the last book that you read that made an impact on you?
Who is a director you want to work with, and what kind of movie would you love to make with them?
If Steve had a theme song, what do you think it would be?
What’s your favorite Steve and Robin moment from the show so far and why?
I have a million more. Ask good questions! Learn more about him! If you’re going and this reaches you, have fun!

Do Jensen and Misha take home gifts they accept from fans during conventions? It's just I was at Comic Con Liverpool over the weekend and I gave the two of them a CD of a song I made for them and I'm hoping they one day listen to it.
