Yeah I have a copyright question. Irrespective of the whole early leak part, where do fan translations lie in all this? Because while I want to (and will continue to) support the manga with my money dollars, I hate relying on viz for my personal enjoyment. Where on the scale of badness is fan translations posted online? Or (*hypothetically!) how about taking an ebook that I bought, downloaded, removed the DRM, re-translated to my liking, and maybe shared via cloud storage with a few people?
I hope I’m making sense. Also curious about your other thoughts on the situation, and thanks for volunteering to talk about it!
Sure thing anon! With the standard caveat that I’m not your personal lawyer and I’m writing this post for general educational purposes (I don’t even know what country you are in!) the short answer is that reading available fan translations is fine. Making fan translations is also fine, especially when doing so for the purposes of:
commenting on or criticizing the original (eg, writing meta),
discussing different translations, or
adding cultural nuances or commentary that isn’t in the original, again for the purpose of education or discussion/critique of the original
The key is that you’re NOT merely substituting for or straight up reproducing the original. I’ll explain more about how that works with translations in the long answer below.
Removing DRM from items you’ve purchased in order to store them on your home computer is fine, or to print one copy for your personal enjoyment. But removing DRM in order to republish an ebook in a way that could compete with the sale/distribution of the original is riskier. In many countries, including the U.S., removing DRM is its own crime, separate from copyright infringement. As a practical matter (meaning not a legal defense but steps to reduce the odds of you getting sued) I’d make sure you really REALLY trust your friends to NOT distribute your work to 30,000 of their whoops-not-hypothetical friends.
Long answer, starting with the basics and building up to our actual answer:
First, legality and “badness” are different things. I know what you mean, anon, but I want to acknowledge at the outset that systems of law are never equivalent to systems of morality, ethics, etc. Second, there are 2 different types of legal cases: criminal and civil. “Criminal” means going to jail and/or having rights taken away as punishment. The police are involved and someone is arrested. There’s a very high burden of proof because the government is taking away someone’s liberty or rights. Americans don’t like the government taking anything of theirs, so the bar is high: It’s guilty beyond a reasonable doubt as determined by a jury of your peers. Similar principles exist in Japan but are notably different in operation — juries don’t like to judge their peers and defer to professional judges and lawyers, so if arrested it’s like 95% certain you’ll be found guilty.
In contrast, “civil” means a company or individual has sued you (NOT the government). As “punishment,” the court can prohibit you from doing something going forward, and you may owe money to the individual/company you harmed, but there’s no arrest, jail time, or criminal record. There’s a lower burden of proof too — often just “more likely than not” — because nobody is losing their liberty, it’s “just” money.
To make things confusing, the criminal/civil divide is NOT an either/or. Sometimes, one action can give rise to many different types of criminal and civil claims, though generally criminal cases and civil cases proceed along parallel paths and don’t cross the categorical streams. Copyright infringement works this way. It can be both criminal and civil, with severe/egregious violations more likely to land on the criminal side. Large-scale piracy and distribution has always been criminal. (E.g., have you ever seen counterfeit merch? Ever heard of Napster? Ever seen street vendors with $5 pirated copies of a movie made by recording in a theater, which you could get months before the official home video release?)
So yeah, laugh at the person getting arrested for posting raw manga pages in bulk, but recognize copyright infringement CAN be criminal. Seeing as manga/anime is one of Japan’s big exports, I’m not surprised Shueisha (the publisher that owns Shonen Jump) engaged the government and I’m not surprised the government took up the investigation. Note also every news outlet reporting that the arrested people were foreigners living in Japan — there’s always a political element to a prosecution.
Ok, copyright can be criminal or civil…but what IS it?
In the U.S. it’s in the Constitution (yes really!) that authors and inventors get a limited amount of time to exclusively use (and profit from) their writings and discoveries. Congress also wrote a statute further defining the copyright. The bar for copyrighting a work is very low per international convention: Any “modicum” or small “spark” of creativity written or recorded in a tangible medium qualifies for copyright as of the moment it is written or recorded, meaning the author (or artist, illustrator, performer, etc) gets a bunch of shiny new rights before the ink is even dry. There’s no question that manga is a creative work that gets the full scope of copyright rights:

Any violation of the author’s rights above is referred to as copyright infringement.
The second bullet point, derivative works, is where fan translations (and fanfic) come in.
A “derivative” work is exactly what it sounds like — a new work that is based on or derived from a pre-existing work. Only the author has the ability to permit derivative works of their work, meaning only the author has the right to allow translations of their work.
For example, look at the rights page below for MHA Vigilantes (an authorized derivative work). Horikoshi continues to have copyright rights in Vigilantes because Vigilantes is derivative of his MHA copyright. Furuhashi and Court ALSO get copyright rights as the author and illustrator. In addition, you can see that Horikoshi licensed the right to make English translations to Shueisha, who we know sub-licensed to Viz, who hired Caleb Cook. Interestingly, Caleb doesn’t get copyright for his translation work here, even though translations for artistic works can get their own derivative copyright. That means Caleb probably signed a contract giving Horikoshi, via Shueisha/Viz, ownership of his translations… aka a work-for-hire.

The Vinland Saga manga is even more direct — the English translation copyright is clearly held by the mangaka, Makoto Yukimura, even though he didn’t actually do the translation. Again, the translator must have signed a work-for-hire agreement.

For funsies, I found that Astro Boy took a different approach and expressly gave the translator his own copyright for “unedited translations,” with Dark Horse Comics getting the copyright for any edits.

If only the author can allow a translation, and translations can themselves be copyrighted, is that the end for fan translations?
NOPE! There are all kinds of exceptions and defenses to copyright, including the famed “fair use” defense in the U.S. “Fair use” says “yeah, I’m infringing, BUT it’s for a valid and societally valuable reason so the author can’t stop me,” and there’s a 4-factor balancing test to determine the outcome. Most other countries don’t have a fair use concept that’s as broad as the U.S. — including Japan — but there’s usually something similar (eg, “fair dealing” or specific enumerated exemptions, usually for educational purposes in schools at a minimum). I won’t nerd out on the 4 fair use factors in the U.S., because that’s an essay by itself. Bottom line:
You are more protected by fair use, and NOT infringing copyright, the more your derivative work is ALL of the following:
transformative of the original (that is, your work is not JUST a copy — you’ve added your own creativity/originality, including commenting on or criticizing the original or adding a new meaning/message/aesthetic to the work); AND
Noncommercial, nonprofit, or educational; AND
Not taking the “heart” of the original work (meaning you’re taking as little as you need from the original to get the point across in your work — this comes up a lot in music sampling cases where someone samples a chorus or iconic riff); AND
Not a merely a substitute for the original work; AND
Not causing economic harm to the market for the original (meaning you CAN criticize and parody the original in a way that causes the original to be less popular, but you CAN’T make something like unauthorized promotional materials that disrupt the market for official materials).
Again, it’s all a balancing test in the U.S., and no one factor wins over another, so if you’re good on some factors but not others, you may want to recalibrate. This is why AO3 is so fierce about no advertising or mentions of payment/commission. Even though AO3 fits under the other fair use factors, they’re trying to make sure ALL of the fair use factors clearly apply to them at all times. If they allowed ads or payment, then copyright owners could claim economic harm or disrupted markets for their original works, and that just might win out over the other factors. These lawsuits are something of a crapshoot, to be honest.
It’s also why, in the manga leaks case, Shueisha’s public letter emphasized (1) subscribers threatening to cancel their Shonen Jump subscriptions; and (2) authors not being compensated because people are reading chapters on social media as a substitute. Those are Shueisha’s receipts — they have evidence of economic harm/substitution AND can argue that leaking full pages has no transformativeness or other societal benefit beyond “read the chapter 4 days early.” (Yes, that means Twitter discourse has more “societal value” under copyright law than page leaks.) But seriously, notice Shueisha’s focus on the spread of IMAGE leaks and not SUMMARIES, probably because the latter would have some small level of transformativeness and not the same “substitution” effect. So go on with your fan translations.
Add your own color commentary, cultural experiences, or the slang you think the character would use. That’s your transformativeness and educational aspect. Compare and contrast with friends online. Don’t charge for your translations, don’t run ads against your translations, and don’t promote easy-to-access archives of fan translations as a substitute for reading the official. (Posting on Tumblr or Twitter with tags is fine, I’m referring to those sites where you can read all 413 fanscan chapters of MHA in a row.) If you’re really worried, think about which pages/panels are necessary to post with your translations. You can always skip panels/pages without dialogue…or summarize a few pages instead of posting every one. You’re posting to discuss translations and not to circulate pages anyway, right? It makes sense you’d need to show some images of the original language to break down how you made your translations, but you may not need every page.
That said, do support an official source as much as you can. In the U.S., the most recent 3 chapters from each Shonen Jump series are free (and in a few different languages), and the full Shonen Jump app is like $3 per month. Even better, if you really want to support Horikoshi? Buy a volume or some merch. From what I can find, I think he gets more money, percentagewise, from volumes and merch than from Shonen Jump (which evidently pays flat rates per page for the weekly magazine). I’m not an expert on mangaka compensation, so I can’t say for certain, but can say I was pleased to find out that Horikoshi owns all the MHA copyrights rather than Shueisha or Viz, which gives him more opportunities to earn money from his creation.
What about DRM?
DRM is a bit different. Even though DRM is covered in the U.S. by the DMCA, which is largely a copyright law, breaking DRM is its own independent crime from copyright infringement. The exceptions and defenses for breaking DRM are not the same as copyright infringement. Specifically, fair use does NOT apply as a defense here. Instead, there are regulations issued by the Copyright Office that authorize specific instances of when (and sometimes where) you can, legally, break DRM. Some instances are limited to educational institutions or libraries, for example. And to be super confusing, one of the factors they consider is likelihood of the use case to be noninfringing. 🙃 Fortunately for the gifset and AMV makers out there, one of the permitted DRM-breaking activities is noncommercial videos. Another is creating closed captioning for those with disabilities. There is not, however, anything explicit for translations. That means you’re left relying on personal use and not getting caught.
I’d love to see the law change to say that breaking DRM is legal when you’re doing things that are entirely legal otherwise. Eg, making a backup copy for yourself, so companies like Funimation can’t disappear with movies you bought. (And if a company isn’t really offering a “sale” of content but rather varying levels of “rental,” then they shouldn’t be allowed to use words like “buy” or “sale.”)
But that’s getting a bit adrift in an already long post! Hope this was useful! Feel free to ask if you have more questions or want to compare manga copyright pages in multiple languages.

Milgram Novel #2 Preview Translation
So the MILGRAM Novel Preview released. Here's a very rough TL. It seems that Dark Triad / Justice Alliance is mentioned in it. I haven't finished translating it yet because I'm not used to reading this kind of orientation.
プロローグ Prologue
青空がどこまでも、どこまでも広がっていた。 The endless blue sky stretched as far as the eye could see.
背の高いビル群が立ち並ぶ街並みの中から見上げても、その空だけは全く窮屈さを感じさせず、深い青色で穏やかに世界を包み込む。 Even when gazing up from amidst the cityscape lined with tall buildings, the sky imparted no sense of confinement and peacefully enveloped the world with its deep blue hue.
天気予報では、明日も同じ空が見られるという。 The weather forecast predicted the same sky to be seen tomorrow as well.
けんそう ボクはゆっくりと視線を落とす。繁華街は日々の喧騒であふれていた。 Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, I slowly lower my gaze.
往来する人々はそれぞれの目的のためにどこかへと向かっていく。 People were heading somewhere, each with their own purpose.
複数人で笑い合っている学生たち。疲れた表情をしたスーツ姿の中年男性。髪色の明るい若い女性がスマホで通話をしながら、ボクの目の前を通りすぎていく。 Students laughed together in groups, a middle-aged man in a tired suit and a young woman with bright hair walked past me while talking on her smartphone.
この街には多くの人がいる。多すぎるほどの人がいる。きっと、ボクたちが置かれている境遇なんて生ぬるいと感じるような、想像もできない過酷な現実を生きている人もいるだろう。 There were so many people in this city. Too many people. Surely, there were those who were living in unimaginably harsh realities, making our own circumstances seem lukewarm in comparison.
それでも。 Nevertheless.
他の人に比べたらまだマシだなんて、ボクは思うことができない。 I can't bring myself to think that I have it better than others.
つら この世界のどこかで、知らない誰かがもっと辛い思いをしていたとしても、彼女が今感じている痛みは確かに本物だから。 Even if somewhere in this world, someone unknown is going through even more difficult experiences, the pain she is feeling right now is undeniably real.
学校では見せない笑顔を浮かべて、ボクの少し前を歩いていく彼女の背中を視界に入れると胸がかすかに痛む。他人の痛みに共感するなんて、少し前までなら考えられなかったのに。 As she walks ahead of me, donning a smile she wouldn't show at school, I catch a glimpse of her back, and my chest twinges faintly. Empathizing with someone else's pain is something I couldn't have imagined just a little while ago.
また明日。平日が始まれば、彼女は吐き気がするような、悪意の連鎖の中に戻っていボクにはそれを止められない。学校の屋上を彼女の心の支えにすることしかできない。 Tomorrow will come again. Once the weekdays begin, she will return to the chain of malice that makes her nauseous. I can't stop that. All I can do is be her pillar of support on the rooftop of our school. ふっと自嘲気味な笑みが自然と漏れた。 A wry smile involuntarily escapes my lips.
ボクは人間の命の尊さを理解できない人間だ。その辺に転がった無機物も、繁華街を埋め尽くす人間たちも、その価値は本質的に同じだと思っている。 I am a person who can't comprehend the value of human life. Be it the inanimate objects scattered around or the humans flooding the bustling streets, I believe their worth is inherently the same.
冷たい人間だ。……そのはず、だった。 I am a cold person. …Or so I thought.
自覚している。彼女と出会い、多くの時間を共にしたことで、ボクの価値観は少しずつ変わっていった。戸惑いがないわけじゃない。でも、それでいい。 I'm aware that meeting her and spending time together has gradually changed my perspective. It's not without confusion, but that's okay.

不意に名字を呼ばれて視線を戻すと、彼女が立ち止まってこちらを振り返っていた。ボクがニュースに気を取られていたことが不満だったようで、彼女は頬を膨らませている。 Suddenly called by my last name, I turn my gaze back and she stops, looking back at me. She seems displeased that I was preoccupied with the news, and she puffs up her cheeks.
「何見てたの?」 "What were you looking at?"
「あそこの、街頭ニュース」 "The street-side news over there."
いちべつ She glances at it briefly, and her expression darkens ever so slightly.
7月が始める。 July begins.
そうだ。この世界のどこでどんな事件が起きたとしても、悲惨な出来事が誰かを苦しめても、ボクは目の前の彼女のことだけ考えていればいい。日までは。 That's right. No matter where or what kind of incidents occur in this world, no matter how tragic they may be, as long as I keep thinking about her in front of me, it will be enough. Until the day…
少なくとも、一緒に高校を卒業して、彼女が悪意の呪縛から解放されるその… At least until we graduate from high school together, and she is freed from the curse of malice…
「『正義同盟』、か」 "'Justice Alliance,' huh?"
正義のヒーローみたいな名前。 A name like that of a hero of justice.
だけど、この世界に救いの手を差し伸べてくれるヒーローなんていない。純粋な正義な ゆが んてものも存在せず、どんな行動の裏にも歪んだ欲望と打算が隠されている。 But in this world, there are no heroes extending a helping hand. There is no pure notion of justice. Behind every action, there are hidden desires and calculations.
もし本当に正義の味方がいるのなら、彼女はとっくに助けられている。その後、ボクがそのニュースを思い出すことはなかった。 If there were truly allies of justice, she would have been saved long ago. After that, I never recalled that news.
翌日に起こった悪夢が全てを吹き飛ばしたからだ。血塗れの彼女の姿が脳を満たしたからだ。「正義同盟」が本格的に世間の話題の中心になっていっても、放心状態のボクは全く興味を持たなかった。 The nightmare that occurred the next day wiped away everything. It filled my mind with the image of her covered in blood. Even as "Justice Alliance" became the talk of the town, I, in a dazed state, had no interest at all.
だけど、それで良かったのだ。 But that was for the best.
もしあの時、「正義同盟」の思想に触れていたら、のめり込んでいた可能性がある。女を死に追いやったクラスメイトたちにその歪んだ思想を突きつけていた可能性がある。結局、ボクは「正義同盟」の思想に取り込まれることはなかった。 If I had been exposed to the ideology of "Justice Alliance" at that time, there's a possibility I would have been drawn into it. There's a possibility that I would have confronted the classmates who drove the girl to her death with their twisted beliefs. In the end, I never became consumed by the ideology of the "Justice Alliance."
そして今、ここにいる。 And now, I'm here.
囚人を裁き、粛清を与える監獄。 A prison to judge prisoners and administer purges.
その中にあるメインルーム「パノプティコン」。 Within it lies the main room, the "Panopticon."
何度も見てきた。 I've seen it many times.
粛清が執行され、囚人たちが鮮血に浸る姿を。 The purges being carried out, the sight of prisoners drenched in fresh blood.
命と存在が消える瞬間を。 The moment life and existence disappear.
だが、目の前で繰り広げられている光景はその性質が根本から違った。塔のように縦に長いパノプティコン、その上層から高速で落下してくる人影が一つ。 But the scene unfolding before me is fundamentally different in nature. The Panopticon, tall and elongated like a tower, with a figure descending rapidly from its upper level.
周囲は無音だった。その信じられない光景を目にしている囚人たちも、落下する人影も、そしてボクも声を出さなかった。 The surroundings were silent. The prisoners witnessing this unbelievable scene, the descending figure, and even I, none of us uttered a word.
いや、出せなかった。 No, we couldn't.
だって。こんなことが起こるなんて、いったい誰が予想できる? Because who could have predicted that something like this would happen?

Oh, about the group that was translating, Desi is part of that group! They're just the translation part, though. (iirc) Sermeno and Jack are more on the programming side, trying to replace the Japanese text in game to English.
However, Sermeno had some hiccups with the MN fandom and they decided to leave from the fandom. They're still working on the game, they just don't wish to interact with the fandom. Updates might come slower because of such.
Thanks for the information! I appreciate you clarifying the situation and who this translation links back to that effort.
Frankly, I haven't really encountered much of our fading fandom beyond the few of us here on Tumblr and a few random people that I commented to on like, a YouTube AMV or something. I did just sign up for Reddit finally; I guess there's a subreddit there that's semi-active? Idk. My point is just that I don't know about any toxicity out there.
I mean, there's always going to be your various shippers and counterpart antis for the potential ships in any fandom, of course, beyond that? I've been lucky enough to isolate myself from any toxicity.

I think people are too kind or too willing to give the benefit of the doubt to shitty right-wing or self-proclaimed “centrist” weeaboos who bitch and moan about “localization” or claim to want only the most literal of literal translations.
They’re stupid as hell, but that’s besides the point: even if you blatantly explained to them how translation properly works or that the original Japanese media being translated contains more progressive viewpoints that wasn’t just added in during the translation process, they’d still bury their heads in the sand and complain about “localization” and “censorship”. Because they’re stuck firm in their beliefs that Japan is some apolitical wonderland and the media that comes from it will never challenge their preconceived notions about the world. Because if a broken, literal translation is offered to them, they’ll bite at the bit to take it so they can use it’s bare-bones retelling of a plot to make up their own story about how the protagonist is just like them and how the antagonist is just like everyone they hate. It’s part of the reason why so many of them have “yellow fever” - because they feel like an Asian woman would put up with all their bullshit in a way that an American woman wouldn’t. Because they feel like progressivism is a disease specific to theirs and maybe a few other countries, but surely hasn’t corrupted the parts of the world where their precious anime comes from.
Weeaboos have the reputation of being just all-around shitty when it comes to recognizing Japan as a real country with its own politics (and instead as some fantasy world where art that they think is cool magically comes from) for a real fucking reason. Stop giving them the leeway to debate and recognize that you’re talking to a malicious brick wall. Learn to recognize “I support Translators and not Localizers” as the political statement that it is.

SiCKtM: the horrors of myself; or, seeing the monster

So I started playin’ Heartthrob Memorial: Under the Tree of Legends (aka: Tokimeki Memorial) on June 9th thanks to Translated.Games’ American English patch and finally figuring out how to find the exact ROM file I needed (ugh). We already know why I started playin’ it, so let’s skip straight to the issue.
See, I decided to (wisely/unwisely) play this highschool dating sim as myself from that time period. Genuinely, but “correctly”. I took notes. Paid attention to everything that was said and how it was said. Who seemed to enjoy what and what seemed to be of no interest to others. Every little thing that occurred in my interactions with the 7 girls I met. Everything that seemed relevant to me atleast (so damn near everything). And things were going great. Yeah, I was stressed dahell out tryin’a manage these relationships with all 7 girls I met during the first year of 1996-1997. The 7 girls I admittedly made secondary to mah grindset (of self-improvement) ‘til I realized I was neglectin’em. And once they did become a focus? Once they did get put to the forefront of my life with maintainin’ and continuously raisin’ stats becoming secondary instead? That’s when the stress crept in. I was always concerned with how they felt. What they wanted. And what they’d enjoy. Every interaction was purposeful. A purposeful question of “How should I respond?”. Of “What would she like more?” Of “Was that the right move?” And I won’t say it wasn’t helpful. But I also won’t say it did the trick.

11 days after final exams (I got ranked 57th 🤷🏿‍♂️), I walked Yumi home on July 18th of 1997 and she asked me what my summer break plans were before telling me she was goin’ to the Beach with Yoshio—her older brother. On July 22nd, a day after our Marine Day date to the Aquarium, Yuko asked me what my summer break plans were before tellin’ me she was going swimming at the Beach and Pool (also visiting the Zoo?). Then Summer Vacation began a few days later.

I joined Yukari at the Beach (pretty sure she was there early), got invited to a double date with Shiori and Yuina at the Amusement Park by Yoshio, went to the Pool with Mio (early) before walking home together, and then… the problems came. 2 weeks later, right after the Second Semester started and for the 4th time that year (and ever), I got rejected. Ayako said she had plans when I invited her to the Amusement Park’s night parade. Ayako again said she had plans (apologetically this time) when I invited her to the new Bowling Alley a week later. In class, the frankly dangerous Yuina invited me to the Shopping Mall on September 14th. 4 days later, I walked Yumi home again. 2 days after that, I enjoyed the Shopping Mall’s Junk Shop with Yuina (early), who let me know that she’s been busy experimenting but it’d be fine to ask her out whenever she’s free. The next day, on September 15th of 1997, the School Trip began. And that’s when I quit.
But why? Well, like I said before, this shit’s too damn stressful.

Here’s a screenshot of the screen you’ll get after calling Yoshio and asking “how the girls would rate me”. It was taken the day before Yuina invited me to the Shopping Mall and a week after Ayako rejected me for the 3rd time. Ayako… one of the 2 girls who liked me, and the only one to give me a gift on both my birthday and at Rei’s winter holiday party. The rest being neutral and Yuina being… Yuina.
iirc (it’s been 3.5 months, y’all) I got overwhelmed tryin’a stay on the positive side of everybody. Even the people I wasn’t interested in. In hindsight, I probably wanted everybody to like me. But also… I didn’t want no bombs.
So I was nice to everyone who showed interest in me. Went outta my way to go on dates with ‘em. Bought ‘em gifts when the time came. etc. I went from 4 girls feelin’ neglected on October 13th of 1996 to 2 neutral and 2 neglected on December 1st to 2 liking me and 3 neutral on April 6th of 1997 to 2 liking 3 neutral and 3 neglected on July 20th. Y’all, this was work. I was tired as hell tryin’a manage these mofos’ (digital) emotions. Tryin’a get these mofos to like me. Even though I had already decided… well, I’ll just quote a message I sent to someone many hours after I started playing…
Tokimeki Memorial's been a thorough fun of sorts. Lots of note taking (my god). Interesting seeing what comes, though. Just made it through the first of 3 years in-game. Hoping no wrenches get thrown my way considering how orderly I'm trying to take things. Kinda got a #1 after thinking over (for too damn long) which of two cuties I was gonna give a special chocolate to during White Day. One's a quiet Drama Club bookworm and the other's a friendly Artist Club artist. So I asked myself... "Who would teenage me have preferred?" And barely a second later ma ass answered "The artist". 😂

So what’s actually goin’ on here? Why was I so bothered by a back-to-back rejection from someone who liked me at the same time that 4 other people (who I wasn’t even interested in) were just neutral? (nevermind bein’ stressed dafuq out by this whole-ass pre-Soulsborne shit) Why’d I quit this game 4 days after I started it?
Well, I’m not sure tbh. It was probably just too damn stressful, though. And that’s not even actually what this essay’s about. This essay (about some Tokimeki Memorial shit) came aboot after something hit me. I don’t recall what triggered the hit (since it’s been over a week now and I’m finally typing this damn thing), but I do remember the hit.

Let me explain. Remember when I said I was playin’ the game genuinely? It wasn’t a stretch. I made decisions that me from highschool would’ve made (if I was more outgoing). Stat grind and all. Well, minus the gift giving. I’ve very rarely received any from non-relatives, so I didn’t become the type to actually see the issue with not giving people one. 🤷🏿‍♂️
Anywho.
Questioning (from long ago of course >.>) was just… really nice. Like, I loved being nice to people, especially female-presenting people (🤔). It was to the point I would feed off someone enjoying my niceness. Felt so good, it could become orgasmic. Y’all,... I was a vamp. 🧛🏿‍♀️
But anyway, this lil tendency of mine (just bein’ nice and shit) would, uh… get me into some trouble I guess. >.> See~… some people~… kinda sorta~… 👉🏿 👈🏿 caught feelin’s 😐
And I wasn’t ‘bout it. 😬 So~… Yeah~… 💀
And where does this lead? To “problems”. Problems that I absolutely did not want. Problems that I definitely did not need. Problems that were, at best, an inconvenience. Problems that were, at worst, emotionally painful.
I did not like this shit. I did not need this shit. I just wanted to be nice to people. Nice without assumption. Nice without issue. Nice with the barest amount of appreciation.
But life wasn’t havin’ that. Humans don’t work that way. People are inevitably conditioned to think certain ways. Male-presenting mofos (brothas especially?) aren’t assumed to have good intentions when they’re too nice. People tend to like those who make them feel good. Somebody who gets no attention is likely to fall for the first (decent-lookin’) mofo that consistently gives them any. And then there’s attraction by proximity. 🤷🏿‍♂️
What I’m sayin’ is… problems came. And I hated it. I hated the way it made me feel to see someone I cared about clearly longing for me and knowing it’d never be reciprocated. I hated to see that moment, that expression, when I slipped up and someone suddenly saw me as more than just a friend. I hated the fear it’d cause knowing that I could lose a friend. I hated having to worry day in day out about people catchin’ feelings.
I just wanted to be. Be a friend. Be me. Be free… to love. Platonically.
And I managed. From my perspective atleast. Can’t say it was emotionally fair of me, the way I managed it. There’s no telling how many people were hurtin’. How many people were dying inside. How many people were in limerence. 😐 And part of me doesn’t wanna think about it.
But still i see them Their faces Their lonesome longingly pained faces
And I wonder... How much did it hurt? How bad was it for them? How bad was I? Was I a monster?
I mean, I did emotionally manipulate people to not see me a certain way. And I did have little concern for how some would feel as I talked them into a friendzone. >.> And I did tend to prioritize getting others to settle for friendship over them doing what probably was in their best interest and walking away. <.<
And so... Years beyond the social circles I found myself in at college. Years beyond the social circles I found myself in at secondary school. Years beyond the social circles I found myself in at primary school. I sat at my desk. Doing whatever. And it hit me.

I understand you may feel a certain way about a moment. Do you want other people to feel the same way about the moment? Then do. not. distract them from the moment. You wouldn't want a person to come into the room when you're watching the climax of a very good series and just commend. You'd hate it. So please don't do this to your viewers either.
