This is an appreciation post for non-native English fanfiction writers. I respect you all so much.
I respect that you might be from a country that doesn't speak English at all. You might be picking up different phrases and spellings from US English, some from RP, some just a random international mix. Or you moved to an English speaking country late and even if you speak English fluently, your brain still operates in your primary language. Maybe English lessons in your country sucked (hi, my fellow post-Socialist states of central and east Europe!) and you just learned through trial and error.
I admire that you keep writing even if you get stuck on a phrase for 30 mins because you have a perfect saying, but it's in your first language and you can't just translate it, so you end up searching for an English equivalent that just doesn't fully cover what you want. You struggle to keep the spelling consistent because there's no international standard and so you randomly switch between "colour" and "flavor" and then have to correct it again and again.
Maybe your first language doesn't have the same sentence structure like English and when you read your finished fic, it just doesn't sound right. Maybe your parents or friends speak to you when you're writing and you switch to your first language and the sentences become even wonkier.
(special shoutout to my fellow suffering Slavs and others whose languages don't have articles. Even if we know the rules, we sometimes just toss all "the"s, "an"s and "a"s into the text and pray they land correctly)
You might struggle because those events in the US history or in the Anglophone world in general that shaped a whole generation mean nothing to you. How do you keep your characters realistic if you don't know? And don't get me started on measuring systems. "What the hell are inches," you may weep as you google all those conversions.
And punctuation? Commas in all the places that seem so wrong to you but they're apparently right?
And yet you decide to struggle with all of that to show love to your fandoms. You conquer your fear of sounding wrong and being ridiculed to share your thoughts with all the fans. Consuming media in another language is difficult enough, but creating something? That's so much more.
So to all of you who struggle with all or some of this like I do - I see you. And I want you to know you are awesome.

God, fanfiction is literally so cringe. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go back to writing fanfiction.

I know I’m old in fandom culture now because I’ve been on tumblr long enough to see us go from loving Anne Rice, to hating Anne Rice, back to loving Anne Rice.
Kids these days don’t remember why us old fanfiction writers say “I don’t own the characters” at the top of every fic. They’ve forgotten how Anne Rice tried to sue all of us out of existence.
They have only known summer and peace and Ao3. They know nothing of the dark days and the war and fanfiction.net and cease-and-desist letters.
We let fanfiction.net lapse and with it our heritage, and now Anne Rice adaptations are trending on tumblr again.
… 2012 tumblr would be ashamed… not of the gay vampires though. That was kind of our jam.

AI writing theft PSA
@jamesjyu and @sudowrite are stealing protected works to train their AI & harassing writers/committing libel against them. Their spam bot is accusing authors of plagiarism to trick readers into copyright theft on @sudowrite's behalf.
All @s are twitter handles.

I don't have the energy to tackle this disgusting can of worms but the gross behavior these people have displayed with artists is, unsurprisingly, spreading to writers.

I mean this with peace and love:
Please don’t pressure fanfic authors to update. This is a hobby not a job, and they’re human with real life to juggle just as much as you.
Your excitement is loved and appreciated, but your respect and consideration is just as important 🤍

I love Queen Charlotte and support the show but let's be honest for a sec here this spin off is living proof of an unspoken law of fanfiction: a creator always loves their Original Characters more than they'll ever love the Author's.
If I had the means to offer Julia Quinn a deal so she can 'co author' with me a spin off based on my OC Maria Kemble, the Regency era actress #RealHistoricalFigure who can then fictionally have an affair with the Earl of Gunningworth so Sophie can be born. Then I would totally do it too. Just add Sophie's illegitimate birth as a footnote somewhere, so the story can focus on my Maria and the struggles of actors in the eighteen hundreds. Because that's the story I'd like to tell.
Sure it would be a bit shameless but if the writing is good, then why complain?. That's what the money's for.
Any fanfic author who's ever created an OC they loved knows that if they could pay the original author to include their OC as part of the OG universe they totally would. And don't pretend you wouldn't.
Shonda simply had the means to give her OCs their own show, so she did. And here we are. Nothing personal Julia, but I admire that move. I really do. Next to having their own book, having your OC included in the original author's Cannon is a fanfic writer's greatest fantasy. Shonda may not call herself a fanfiction creator, but... We see you babe, we see you
(I hope Julia Quinn charged a pretty big penny for that co authoring of Queen Charlotte. Because she's a good writer and she deserves all the cash)

Sometimes, I'll re-read my own stories and I'll see a line in there that I cannot fathom coming out of my own brain. I'll shock myself with some of the one-liners I write. It's like damn bitch, you writing writing.
