Fun quotes from Fantasy High Sophomore Year, Episode 15
***
Emily: Do not meta game with my freaking dad!
***
Brennan: If one of you would kindly roll a d20 to see how bad the lair action is.
Murph: You got it! *throws his d20 before the others can process what's happening, followed by the cast yelling over his terrible roll*
***
Brennan: The rest of yall are getting charged.
Siobhan: What to? Our credit cards?
***
Murph: A 7 is a Murph 10!
***
Siobhan: (On Johnny being caught by the Kystrona The Chained) I'll just continue to throw Johnny Spells on every one of my turns.
***
At 1:11:33, Brennan quickly realized his mistake of having Daybreak use Frighten Foe on Fabian who is immune to fear.
Siobhan: Eat those dice Brennan.
Ally: Eat the dice! Eat more dice! Eat more dice!
Zac: Don't do it! It takes forever!
Brennen: *pops a sugar dice in his mouth for a few seconds before he spat it into his glass*
34 minutes later (1:45:12) Brennan forgot he put the discarded candy dice in his drink
Brennan: *takes a sip out of his nearby glass, nearing spewing his drink everywhere as he covers his mouth with the back of his hand* Oh. I forgot I put a candy dice in that. *continues to make faces over the taste*
***
Siobhan: (on Kristen spitting on Daybreak) Does Kristen's gay spit do damage?
Ally: Yeah. Does my gay spit do anything?
Lou: One d4 for gay spit?
Brennan: One d4 for gay spit? You see a little bit of gay spit touches daybreak and he goes *ssss* Ah! Love! Love wins!
***
Ally: Shield, so my AC's now 20.
Brennan: How do you have shield?
Ally: I don't know.
Brennan: I don't-
Ally: *holds up card*
Brennan: *pointing at card* That's Shield of Faith which is a different spell.
Ally: Oh. Okay. Shield of Faith.
Brennan: This is not useable as a reaction. That is a concentration spell.
Murph: You were confident though.
(proceeds to become a running joke)
***
Murph: We're all gonna die yall.
Emily: No. I will save us all with my bonus action Healing Word and all the 2s I keep rolling.
***
Ally: Right, right. So if I had those 9 temp hitpoints there. (from Tracker's spell)
Brennan: It would be impossible for me to hit a 9 on a d8.
***
Emily: (on Riz flying out of a cannon) Can I do an insight check to see if he's having fun?
Brennan: Bill Seacaster? He's having a great time!
Emily: No! Riz!
***
Zac: Let Brennan know if you want him to give me a magical item.
***
Bonus: Murph lost his "little beans" dice

A Court of Thorns and Roses
Good book! However, did not meet my expectations of the reviews compared to FBAA and AKOFAF. The second book apparently has better reviews than the first so starting the second one today! Just from the spoilers I know that Rhys and Feyre have an intense relationship so I am excited to see how that pans out. I was rooting for Tamlin and Feyre for most of this book but then when Rhys was introduced, the banter that they had was more interesting compared to with Tamlin.
I was a little confused in the beginning (this is really only my second series I’ve read about Fantacy) about the Fae, faeries, and High Fae and that there was different types of faeries. I caught on after a while. There were parts of the book where Sarah J. Maas wouldn’t go into a scene as in depth as I wanted her to. For example whenever Feyre would drink the faerie wine with Rhysland.
I am going to read the next book but depending on how I like it we will see if I continue the series. When I look at recommendations compared to these books, they are all YA when I was hoping to read more NA books. I’ll have to do some more digging!

Is Van Actually Good?
Who's ready for me to ruin the whole god damned season? Let's get started!
***
Van is a celestial, specifically a planetar (a type of angel second in power only to solars) from Elysium. Planetars are considered lawful good (although some sources state that they can be neutral or even slightly chaotic as long as they uphold their code) and large in size with high charisma stats, a challenge rating of 16 (VERY powerful), and advantage against spells and magical effects. They can detect good and evil, speak all languages, see invisible and shapechanged creatures/objects, spot hidden traps, and ALWAYS KNOW WHEN THEY HEAR A LIE.
Tumblr media
Their ability to always detect lies is called Divine Awareness. It's not a spell. It's an otherworldly level of insight with no check or saving throw and (to my knowledge) only the two strongest types of angel have Divine Awareness which makes the ability quite rare. It's also innate and can't even be hindered by the 8th level spell Glibness (unless a DM bends the rules to allow it), so it's also a very powerful ability that should not be underestimated.
Well, what about the fact that Van is trapped in a crystal? Would that negate his abilities? The answer is actually no! We know this because of Gorthalax. You know, that dude in the first season that the gang automatically didn't trust because he was a fiend which made them super careful around him? That guy. In season one, he made a contract with Johnny Spells and became his patron while trapped in a crystal. In season 2 (episode 4), he refilled Fig's warlock spell slot while trapped in a crystal (that was also cursed). This proves that while they are limited by the crystal, the beings within them can still interact with the outside world to some degree.
Finally, there's the fact that Van was cast out from paradise (after napping through a clarion trumpet call made by his superior/love calling for them to fight the forces of fiends). To be cast out, an angel must (intentionally or unintentionally) commit an act of evil and then continue down an evil path or refuse to see the error in their ways. If they were willing to repent, they have a power/s revoked or are demoted. If they were unrepentant, they were usually stripped of powers and cast into the lower planes, but some were only exiled from the upper plains. As Van is both still a celestial and a powerful being (as stated by the identify spell), he would have been an exile and still have his powers. Here's were things start to get interesting. Banished angels respond in one of two ways. They either live on one of the other planes (usually the material plane) and may or may not try to eventually redeem themselves OR they become even more unrepentant, with some even looking for a place in the hierarchy of the lower planes. The monster manual itself states that a celestial straying from the good alignment is a "horrifying rarity", meaning that while it's rare, it's still possible.
***
Put it all together and we have ourselves a lot of questions
1. Does Van still have working Divine Awareness?
2. If he does still have Divine Awareness, why does he play dumb when he knows someone is lying (especially after the initial lies and explanation about the dangers)? Is it for an innocent reason or something else?
3. How does he feel about his exile and why/how it happened?
4. Could his lawful good nature have changed since his exile?
5. Assuming that the other gems in the bag were cursed (which they seem to be but I could be wrong), why was his uncursed despite him stating that he had been trapped long enough to not remember his name?
6. Since The Seven Maidens were able to toat around a generator for their crystals during their journey and expected another team to be able to do the same (with no mention of special requirements), could Van have lied about not having all the necessary equipment to make the party able to make calls? The van that Van is possessing was previously owned by passionate tinkerers who were very proficient in their craft after all.
7. Is The Hangman actually right about Van?
Also, last season the cast didn't trust Gorthalax for a while because he was a pit fiend. This season, they are trusting Van because he's an angel. Food for thought.
***
tl;dr: Van is a planetar who was exciled from the upper planes, innately knows when he hears a lie (which is an ability that doesn't require a spell), and hid that he knows when people are lying from the party. We know beings trapped in crystals can still interact to some degree with the outside world. Exiled angels can change alignment. If I'm right about the type of devil The Hangman was, he would have high insight and while his reaction could just be jealousy, it might also be an actual red flag.
