Just Dessert
‘Ooh, Deputy!” a singsong voice came over the radio. You rolled your eyes, you knew exactly who it was, John fucking Seed. Your favorite condescending asshole. “Yes, Johnny Boy?” you responded, your voice trying to match his antagonizing tone. You and John had a “fun” relationship since coming to Hope County. Out of the three brothers, he was the most interesting and the easiest to annoy. Jacob was too mean for your liking, and well Joseph…...he was Joseph. There was no antagonizing him. Every pestering line, every goofy move you made towards him, he turned into a verbal hostage situation. He leaves you looking for the door. John though took things a little too close to heart. You loved the front he put up. How he sounds like he is in charge, and you allowed him to think that. You could hear a growl on the other side of the radio. “I told you not to call me that,” he responded. With a chuckle that he couldn’t hear, you responded, “And when have I EVER listened to you?” “Oh you will, just give it time,” his voice was seductively threatening. “Goodbye Johnny Boy,” you added quickly. You turned your radio off before he could continue anything.
You made your way across Holland Valley, taking every back road and shortcut you could to avoid Peggie’s. You were on your way to see Nick Rye. The Rye family was one of the first to greet you to this county with open arms. In turn, you vowed to help keep them safe. Though that quickly turned into you becoming Nick’s help around the airport. You helped Kim around the house when needed. “Where is she?!” you heard John's voice yell as you neared the airfield. “Not here,” Nick shot back quickly, “and if she was, I wouldn’t tell you!” John tsked a couple of times. “Oh, Nick. Nick, Nick, Nick. Do you remember what happened the last time you told me no?” Fear flashed in Nick’s eyes. You could see the situation acting out as you hid behind the hangar. You tried to stay as out of sight as possible. You knew that John never played when it came to dealing with the Rye’s. “You’re already greedy about your land. No need to get greedy about your women,” John spoke with a wicked smile on his face. Usually, you would melt on the inside every time he smiled, but this time, you narrowed your eyes. He was threatening your new family.
You wanted to step in and help Nick, but you didn’t want to expose yourself. So, you snuck behind the hangar popped your head around the corner, and did what you could to get Nick’s attention. Giving small hand waves in Infront of your face. You can see Nick’s head slightly to the side. He opened his mouth to speak, but you quickly shook your head and placed a finger over your mouth. Catching on to Nick, John looked around, “Is she here?!” Hiding back around the corner, you held your breath. “She is in the hangar!” He yelled accusingly. He wasn’t sure if that was where the deputy was, but he wasn’t going to take a chance. Quickly Nick jumped in front of John, “No one is in there besides a plane.” Quickly Nick ran ahead of John and his men, quickly trying to close the hangar. John growled, not happy at all. “Fine!” He yelled, defeated, “I will let your family be…for now.” You stayed behind the building listening. You looked around, and not too far from you was a small crate. Trying to think of something that you could do with it, you noticed a skunk. A mischievous smile crossed your face. Snatching the skunk, you placed it in the box, being as quickly as possible, so you don’t get sprayed. You poked your head back around the hangar. Seeing John and his men trying to open the bay door, you hurried to the vehicles. Opening the door to the back seat, you place to crate gently. Backing up, you went to shut the door, and it slammed with a thud. “Shit,” you muttered to yourself.
“Welcome to the party,” John shouted from where he stood. Knowing you were caught, you walked out and played it cool. “Yeah, it took a minute to get here, especially with all your roadblocks,” you lied, hoping he wouldn’t pry. You casually strolled up to the front of the car and leaned against it. Cultists surrounded you, their guns focused. Hearing Nick open the bay door you smiled. “How’s it going?” You asked Nick, completely disregarding John between you two. “A bit…busy,” he responded with a chuckle, “you?” “Same,” you said, this time with an audible laugh. “ENOUGH with this…this….,” he threw his hands up, not able to find the right word. “…This charade!” Snapping his fingers, a couple of cultists moved from you to Nick. “Now that I have both of your attentions…again. I can finally get to my point!” he raised his voice sternly. You could see the annoyance in his eyes. You smiled at him sheepishly. Inside you know, one wrong move and your ass was grass, but you weren’t going to let him know that. So, you gave this relaxed calm, and cool exterior. “I want this airfield, and I want it NOW!” he demanded. He turned to Nick and approached him, “You are going to confess to your sin of greed, and give me the keys to your house, plane, and your hangar. Or el-“ “Yoo-hoo,” you yelled from your position. On your finger, you twirled a set of keys. “These?” you gave a mischievous grin, “I will give them to you IF you leave this place and do not bother us for at least a month.” “Two Weeks,” he shot back. “Three weeks,” you threw back. You approached him, ignoring the guards around him. “Two weeks and I give free passage when the baby is born. An escort even,” John said sweetening the deal. He knew that you would run him out of resources if he didn’t give up something good quickly. “DEAL!” Nick yelled, running up to the two of you, almost collapsing at John’s feet. “Fine,” you said watching the scene. You gave John the keys. “Though, I advise you open that shed first,” you pointed at a small shed off in the distance. It was a small green building that looked ready to fall apart. John raised an eyebrow before motioning to the cultist to follow him.
Quickly, you helped Nick to his feet, “Let's get in the house before they find out.” You looked at John one last time before hauling ass. “Before what?” Nick asked. Suddenly you hear a man yell “SKUNK!” followed by John yelling in disgust. You laughed and looked back once inside the home. You could see John’s men running for the vehicles and a pissed-off John following behind them, they all got sprayed. “I switched the keys,” you said, moving to close windows and curtains. Peeking through the front door, you watched the vehicles, waiting for them to disappear. Instead, you watched them vacate the SUVs quickly. You could see a green cloud fill the vehicle in front. John opened the door, almost falling out of the passenger side. "DEPUTY!!" You heard him yell, his voice full of anger. You, Nick, and Kim all fell on the floor, your sides splitting from laughing too hard.
