He made Matthew a weekend breakfast, sausages from the freezer, eggs, fat toast from the organic local bread the farmers' market people had sent to the senator's office. Matthew sat silently at the bar in the kitchen, not fidgeting, not kicking his legs, not laughing, not humming, doing absolutely nothing annoying at all. Since he'd moved in with Declan, Declan had often longed for Matthew to be quieter - less chewing with his mouth open, less prattling, fewer jokes read off websites, less dropping and knocking over of things with oops ha ha, less thundering up and down the stairs as if he were seven instead of seventeen.

But now that he was quiet, Declan hated it.

context for this scene from book 2: ronan is in church with his older brother declan, younger brother matthew, and ghost friend noah "Joseph Kavinsky isn’t someone I want you being around,” Declan added. “Don’t snort. I’m serious.” Ronan merely invested a look with as much contempt as he could muster. A lady reached over the top of Noah to pat Matthew’s head fondly before continuing down the aisle. She didn’t seem to care that he was fifteen, which was all right, because he didn’t, either. Both Ronan and Declan observed this interaction with the pleased expressions of parents watching their prodigy at work. Declan repeated, “Like, actually dangerous.” Sometimes, Declan seemed to think that being a year older gave him special knowledge of the seedier side of Henrietta. What he meant was, did Ronan know that Kavinsky was a cokehead. In his ear, Noah whispered, “Is crack the same thing as speed?” Ronan didn’t answer. He didn’t think it was a very church-appropriate conversation. “I know you think you’re a punk,” Declan said. “But you aren’t nearly as bad ass as you think you are.” “Oh, go to hell,” Ronan snapped, just as the altar boys broached the rear doors. “Guys,” Matthew pleaded. “Be holy.”

basically ronan's powers are inherited from his dead father niall and it means he can bring anything from a dream into real life. so he's got this whole crisis about whether he is a living piece of blasphemy because men are not meant to have the powers of gods or whether he literally is god. which is not acceptable to him for a number of reasons but mostly because he hates himself. his love interest's name is adam and adam lives in a small apartment above a church which the book says focuses the objects of his worship neatly into one building. I love them both dearly. also, this entire page makes me feel like I'm going insane. Ronan Lynch believed in heaven and hell. Once, he’d seen the devil. It had been a low, late morning at the Barns when the sun had burned off the mist and then burned off the chill and then burned the edges off the ground until everything shimmered with heat. It never got hot in those protected fields, but that morning, the air sweated with it. Ronan had never seen cattle pant before. All of the cows heaved and stuck their tongues out as they frothed with the heat. His mother sent Ronan to put them in the shade of the cattle barn. Ronan had gone to the searing metal gate, and as he did, he’d glimpsed his father, already in the barn. Four yards away from him had stood a red man. He was not truly red, but the burned orange of a fire ant. And he was not truly a man, because of the horns and the hooves. Ronan remembered the alienness of the creature, how real it had been. Every costume in the world had gotten it wrong; every drawing in every comic book. They’d all forgotten that the devil was an animal. Looking at the red man, Ronan had been struck by the intricacy of the body, how many miraculous pieces moved smoothly in harmony, no different than his own. Niall Lynch had had a gun in hand — the Lynches had an enormous number of guns of all sizes — and just as Ronan had opened the gate, his father had shot the thing about thirteen times in the head. With a shake of its horns, the unharmed devil had presented its genitalia to Niall Lynch before bounding off. It was an image that had yet to leave Ronan. And so Ronan became a reverse evangelist. The truth burst and grew inside him, and it was laid upon him to share it with no one. No one was meant to see hell before they get there. No one should have to live with the devil. So many homilies on faith were ruined once you no longer required it for belief.

What's the Declan outside pov Pynch idea 👀

hi anon! thanks for the ask 💕 i am really interested in exploring declan’s evolving trust with adam so i have a couple vignettes in mind of him finding out pynch are together, him realizing how serious it is to ronan, him realizing how serious it is for adam and building trust with adam, etc. all silly and fluffy not a lot of angst, just declan having the same moments of realization that ronan got to have seeing jordeclan in the sweet metal sea.

I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS and i am brain dumping so i’m sorry, but basically i think that declan is super wary of othes knowing about the lynch family secret and questions adam’s intentions for being with ronan (before he really gets to know him/them). semi deep dive below with spoilers for the dreamer trilogy.

we never get to see declan learning about adam and ronan as a couple, but from trb adam is already screening ronan’s calls and answering declan so they have history/familiarity. in the beginning of cdth declan is still wary of adam but more from the perspective of knowing that if adam were to leave ronan (really leave him) that would destroy him. when ronan is unreachable, declan reminds him that he wanted to be a farmer and live a life with adam (i think encouraging ronan back to this life that declan approves of). when adam “leaves” ronan in greywaren, declan stands up for his brother basically calling adam out for giving up so easily after everything they’ve been through.

i just GAH i want more declan and adam content because they are both so protective of ronan and love him so much and they are also both bitchy assholes the passive aggression is off the charts!!!

Loved your new fic so much! Personally think new members absolutely need a list of all the team's stuffed animals. I feel like some like the likes of Reynolds, Colin and Sam had ones they had from childhood whereas the likes of Isaac, Jamie and Jan were talked into buying or were gifted ones. They probably have rules about not having the same species of animal toys as well because they're all insane...Richard's and Jan argue that their toys are actually a mountain goat and a domesticated goat despite that literally still being the same species and them literally having the same toy. I have so many thoughts on this would love to hear yours

So I've thought about it and this is what I have:

Tom O’Brien - A sheep, because his granddad was a sheep farmer.

Arlo Dixon - A cuddly corgi, which his now ex-wife maintains he loves more than her.

Tommy Winchester - A bear knitted by his nan. It is lopsided and only vaguely resembles a bear but he loves it.

Isaac McAdoo - A Build-A-Bear given to him by Colin as a joke. Neither of them can remember the joke but Isaac loves the bear as much as he loves Colin. He asked his mum to make the bear a little captain's armband after he became captain.

Sasha Kukoč - A frog, because he likes Kermit the frog.

Richard Montlaur - A mountain goat given to him by his nephew before he left for England. He actually hates goats but he loves his nephew so the goat stays.

Jamie Tartt - A shark, given to him by the team after the Dubai Air protest. He will never admit it but the shark means a lot to him. When he was at Richmond the first time he didn’t have anything and laughed at the immaturity of the rest of the team.

Colin Hughes - A dragon. After he comes out the team buys him a rainbow dragon and he takes both of them to games.

Jan Maas - An Octopus. Jan was going to be a marine biologist if he wasn’t a footballer. When he first joins Richmond he maintains he does not have a cuddly toy so Colin and Jeff steal the octopus, Jan didn’t speak to them for a month despite no harm being done.

Dani Rojas - When he first moves to England, nothing, because he didn’t want to lose an old friend on the journey over, until the comment about being a raven haired golden retriever results in Isaac getting him a golden retriever.

Robbie Roberts - A cat, because he is allergic to cats and his sister thought it was funny when they were kids.

Jeff Goodman - A highland cow, because they are both ginger. He has to keep reminding people he is from Yorkshire, not Scotland.

Babatunde - A raccoon, because he thinks they are cute and fun to watch

Declan Cockburn - A cuddly plant because he can not keep plants alive to save his life.

Paul Reynolds - Originally a Leprechaun he bought over from Ireland with him, however he ends up with a cuddly olive given to him by O’Brien after his daughter, Olivia, is born.

Moe Bumbercatch - A one eyed sloth he won on a claw machine when he was a teenager

Martin De Maat - Misunderstood and actually has a cushion with a picture of a donkey on it.

Sam Obisanya - A dog he has had since he was a baby. When he was with Rebecca the poor thing got hidden in the wardrobe but now it is back on his bed.

Kyle McCraken - A squid, which in part led to being called Squid Game. He is still upset that you can’t get a cuddly kraken.

Bhargava - A peacock, he shrugs when asked questions about it.

Anders Rosenfeldt - A rag doll because his girlfriend got it for him when he said he needed a cuddly friend for away games.

Thierry Zoreaux - A moose holding the canadian flag. If Paul and Colin can have something from their home countries, so can he.

Will Kitman - A very tired looking elephant that he has had since he was a baby. If it can survive university it can survive a football team.

Bonus:

Roy - A very grumpy unicorn given to him by Phoebe for his first ever Uncle's day. No one had ever seen it until they were in the championship and they played away at Rotherham when the fire alarm in the hotel went off, Roy grabbed the unicorn and took it with him outside. Jamie and Colin laughed, resulting in them having to run laps once they were back in Richmond and they both had to apologise to the unicorn in front of the whole team.

Beard - A hedgehog. No one knows why and he refuses to answer questions.

When Niall gave up his memories in Greywaren, he gave up his own story. What does a story-telling man do who when he hasn't got a story of his own? He makes one up.

Here are some descriptions of Niall in TRC.

Niall was handsome and charismatic and rich and mysterious (Gansey's POV RB chpt 7)

And

Niall Lynch was a braggart poet, a loser musician, a charming bit of hard luck bred in Belfast but born in Cumbria . . . Niall was a rogue and a fiend . . . a scoundrel (Ronan's POV TDT prologue)

Ronan's description Niall is remarkably similar to that of Greenmantle, who refers to Niall as "Bastard" and "Loser" and "Fucking Braggart" in BLLB. It's funny how Ronan's opinion of Niall is closer to Greenmantle's than Gansey's. Which indicates Ronan didn't idolize Niall nearly as much as Declan thought (and Gansey had a crush on Niall). But none of it sounds like the anxious, people-pleasing young man who loved Mór in Greywaren.

The New Fenian says that both Mór and Niall both gave up a lot of memories, the sort of painful memories that hold people back. Mór seems to have reconstructed her life without embellishment - she had the New Fenian to help her. Niall created a whole different life.

First, of course, was Aurora. Was Niall disturbed when he realized he dreamt her? At some point, he figured it out. The will he left behind shows that.

But also, Niall told Ronan he was from Belfast, but we learn in Greywaren he actually grew up on a farm in Kerry. Niall told Declan that his father had been murdered - Declan asks Mr. Gray if he was the one who did it - but we learn Niall's father died of alcoholism. And Niall as rogue, fiend, scoundrel? Not much like the man whose main goals were to be a farmer and stay-at-home-dad.

When Ronan went searching for proof that Niall was telling the truth, it wasn't just about the dreaming or where the money came from; it was because Niall had invented his life out of whole cloth.

In Greywaren, you learn that Hennessy dreamt Jordan because she wanted to see what she (Hennessy) would be like without the memories of her mother. What she got was a woman who was nothing like her.

Declan notes that the New Fenian is not the same as his father because their lives had diverged. That's only half the story. Their early memories were different. Fenian had Niall's original memories: Niall had only the memories he chose to keep, as well as his invented history.

This is not to say that nothing of Niall remained. He still loved his family, all of it. He was still charming and fast-talking. He was still a people pleaser - you see that when he built the box for Declan's moth against his better judgment. The combination of braggart + people-pleaser + not being the brightest bulb in the chandelier is what got him killed.

So, by choosing to give up memories of Declan's birth and retain memories of Ronan's, did Niall create a new reality in which Ronan WAS the favorite. After all, the whole family thought so. By choosing to think of himself as a rogue, did he become one? There's nothing inherently wrong with selling non-sentient dreams, but nothing prevented him from remaining a farmer only. It would have been less dangerous. And the blessing of Greywaren would have remained since Ronan was still there. But did Niall even remember what Greywaren meant, or was it just a vaguely familiar word he latched onto while bragging.

In any case, the New Fenian retains far more of the original Niall Lynch, and the primary unreliable narrator in the Lynch family was Niall himself.

who: @omerflorent where: the florent apartments within highgarden, shortly following everyone's departure from the reach. this is set before omer florent's visit to the riverlands.

omer florent had upset his wife. did he realise yet? probably not. would he realise it? sooner rather than later.

"i've got business to attend to in the riverlands....been pulled into da' nonsense between the idiots of raventree hall and the brackens. aye, i sent ronan a raven this morning to let him know i'd be travelling to see him." she could recognise her husband's voice anywhere. his words were enough to capture her attention, looking toward the archway to the other room where they were.

the longer she heard him speaking with his cousin, declan florent, who had come to see him from brightwater keep itself, the more she thought about drifting into the chamber with the gentleness of a tornado. declan florent held the position of the current heir of brightwater, working as the seneschal of the keep whilst the lord and lady took up residence within highgarden; their first meeting had been a somewhat tense one, considering the man had eyes which reminded her of a beaver and looked upon her incredibly carefully, as though he were waiting for her to pounce.

"aye, i do remember ya, my lady; lord hightower's cousin."

that in itself was enough to sense the feeling of suspicion the man held toward her, in which lucrezia's only reply was her hands crossing over the bodice of her gown and omer opening his mouth to say something. something she no longer were paying attention to. for half a moment, she had the inclination to confirm, insisting that yes, she was kin to the hightowers. instead, she kept her mouth shut, entirely dissociating for a few minutes whilst her husband and his kin started speaking rapidly in the tongue of brightwater.

and so now, whenever declan ventured forward from brightwater keep, their interaction was cordial; for she did not enjoy being in his presence for too long. she would come up for a reason to be in another room, never making it too obvious it were him she was avoiding. he were there in this moment, in the next room with omer, whilst she looked over a new petition put forward to the lord and lady that had been brought by declan himself.

the farmers were disputing land borders once again, this time including sheep numbers: the case seemed mundane, and able to be resolved by rebalancing the number of sheep by providing personally, until she noted something at the end.

they also accuse farmer john and his wife morra of using the aid of a woods witch, for their sheep all fell suddenly ill, and only three have survived. an investigation into the health of the sheep will be conducted. there was no mention of the woods witch; no mention of the other individual involved in the case, accused to distributing literal poisons. she looked at the parchment as though she were going mad - such matters were not included in the herbal house.

she quietly arose from her chair, noting the way grape seemed to look up from her place by the fire at the sound of the chair against the wooden floorboards. lucrezia absentmindedly made her way over to lovingly stroke the top of her head, hearing the sounds of the men finishing up their discussion, with declan continuing to talk as he were halfway out the door in that loud way the men of brightwater often did with one another. she crossed into the room with enough time to wave him goodbye, before letting the door close behind her.

she looked at omer, her face blank; it were obvious to see she were upset with something. "the riverlands?" she asked, her voice attempting to hide how upset she seemed to be at what she had overheard from the other room. it were not working, for her tone sounded on edge and strained. it were obvious she had been given enough time to stew on her feelings, as she read the petition over and over again. "is your pregnant wife there or here?"

Literally the whole movie series is framed around the sacraments. Weddings and first communions and baptisms.

I just thought of the Godfather bc of the tumblr ask about people who are devout in some ways but uhh not very holy in other ways, and nobody is a better example of that than Michael in the montage toward the end of the Godfather. I saw the film for the first time last year, and that sequence just floored me. Will not spoil it in case you haven't seen the film but ohhh my goodness
