🎶 All God's people find their place, and I love you like a mountain 🎶
Sometime before noon Antoine finally rose from bed. He had donned a plain vest and then rolled up his sleeves, both for the heat and knowing that his arsenal of robes and patterned ties wouldn’t get him far on the streets of New Mexico. His fingers exaggerated each movement, heavy with the weight of his need to succeed for his family’s sake as well as his own.
As he put his hat atop his head, he knew that he couldn’t drag out the inevitable any longer. He had never felt comfortable asking for help, much less begging for a job. A skilled pianist, a business owner, a decorated war veteran; what was any of it here? He was an unskilled laborer in a foreign land, saddled with debt and nerves.
He took a shaky breath and crossed his arms, a French prayer coming to the front of his mind. Rather than fight it he kept his eyes closed and silently went through the words before signing the cross and walking out the door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he walked onto the porch both Giorgio and Zelda were already standing in the middle of the yard, deep in conversation as Zelda pointed to the shed and the crops. He waved at them and asked where Josephine was; with a weary shrug Giorgio called back that she was still asleep.
Zelda gave him a knowing smile and whispered good luck, her words almost silent but clear to Antoine even across the farmyard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He set off on foot toward town, following the directions that Giorgio had given him to the places that he heard were looking for workers. He had offered him a ride the day before, but Antoine knew that in their situation gas was a luxury not to be wasted. Besides, there was something about all of these cars and roads that he didn’t trust.
Zelda joked that it was the city boy in him, afraid of the open road. It was her new favorite nickname and one that he was growing increasingly delighted with as her Henford roots continued to show. Even her clipped English accent, softened by her years in New Orleans and his own Creole voice, had seemingly strengthened in the days since they’d arrived.
But perhaps she was right, the city boy wasn’t prepared for the speed at which the cars flew by his shoulder. Yet as the loud engine passed him and disappeared down the road beyond, he was left in the peaceful desert air. It felt older and stiller than anything he'd ever known, so much so that it erased the worries from his mind until he forgot the task at hand and actually began to enjoy his walk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet as the days went by the comfort he drew from the surrounding desert began to dwindle. One after another, shop owners and farmers turned him away. The kinder ones gave him a new address, another place to look. They passed the buck along, scared for their own security and unwilling to take on another mouth to feed as the newspaper headlines grew more grim and the line of unemployed longer by the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But many simply muttered under their breath and turned away. For others, he was lucky if their insults were so subtle. Hunger and fear had left the worst of them volatile and inhospitable, desperate for a scapegoat for their frustrations in whatever form it arrived.
Get off my land, grifter. Find another place to beg, Okie. We’ve got nothing for you, you damn migrant. He was no stranger to slurs, but these were new, and they held a whole different capacity for insult, new weight and freshly perceived inadequacies for him to digest each time they were hurdled in his direction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So day after day, week after week, he went home to Zelda as his failures mounted and hopes dwindled down to nothing. Still, their creaky iron bed grew more comfortable and the peeling wallpaper an ever soothing sight. He laid there in her welcome embrace until the word went still and the panic quieted.
Each night it became easier to recount every moment of his day, coupled as it was with his growing fear and worry. When he couldn't, he listened to Zelda speak of the new things Violette had learned, or the progress that she and Gio had made on the soil. In the quiet of the desert air one of their voices filled the void that the world had created for them, until their eyes began to grow heavy and there was nothing left to worry about until the sun rose again on a new day.

Thomas would win, of course. His wife had quite the pull on Lavina afterall. And the day would continue for everyone else as they walked the farmers market perusing all the handmade or homegrown goods across Henford. "Oooh! Stinky chweese!" Violette pointed eagerly at a stall.

Yesterday, I went on a bunch of errands with Dominic, including to Target, so I bought this (even cuter in person) sundress and black dress. I have convinced myself that with big gold jewelry and sunglasses the black dress is “sophisticated” but honestly let’s be real it’s a muumuu. It’s very, very comfortable.
Yesterday, Dominic and I also walked to a rooftop bar in the neighborhood next to ours, and I had a gin rickey with creme de violette, and it was so refreshing on a hot day. Afterward, we went over to a friend’s house for pizza and met some of their friends. It was very nice. I was tired, so I was quieter than normal, but I still had a good time.
This morning, I woke up on fire to go to the farmer’s market, so I rallied Dominic, and then when we got there, lol, I remembered the market is on Sundays. While we were there we had coffee at a cute, breezy coffee shop and then we both tried dim sum for the first time, and it was so delicious. Now I’m going to the running store to buy new shoes, maybe some new running clothes, and a pair of Goodr sunglasses since mine broke while we were in Florida.
It’s been a good weekend so far. I hit a couple days last week that were sadder than I wanted them to be, so I’m trying to be extra grateful for the good days when they roll around.

Lesson 77: Today let us meet Violette Neatley Anderson, the first Black woman to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Born in 1882 England, Violette Neatley immigrated to the U.S. along with her parents, settling in Chicago and ultimately graduating from the Chicago Athenaeum and the Chicago Seminar of Sciences. Drawn to the legal profession, she graduated from Chicago Law School in 1920 and passed the bar, licensed in the U.S. Eastern District of Illinois. She later set up a private practice; the first woman --of any race-- to do so in the state of Illinois.
After a number of successful local cases as defense counsel, in 1922 Anderson was appointed to assistant prosecutor in Chicago --once again the first woman, of any race, to be appointed to such a post. Of greater significance just four years later, she was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. From 1920 to 1926, she was also the vice-president of the Cook County Bar Association --again, the first woman to ascend to that position.
Perhaps Anderson's most important historical moment came in 1936 when she advocated for the then-controversial Bankhead-Jones Act, legislation aimed at providing sharecroppers and tenant farmers (many of them Black) with modest credit loans to buy damaged lands for rehabilitation --with an eye towards elevating poor agricultural workers to successful farm owners. The Act was eventually signed into law in 1937 by Franklin D. Roosevelt and was later ruled Constitutional by the Supreme Court. To this day the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management manage some Bankhead-Jones lands.
Anderson lived just long enough to see the Act signed into law, dying in December of 1937. She willed her home to her beloved sorority Zeta Phi Beta, which honors her work every year in the month of April on "Violette Anderson Day."

Year 6: End of Year Review
Here are my stats and household rankings for Year 6. (Super long text post under the cut.)
Year 5 End of Year Census
Royals (1 household, 5 sims total)
1 elder (female)
1 adult (female)
1 young adult (male)
2 teens (1 female, 1 male)
3 cats (2 female, 2 male, one runaway)
2 dogs (1 female, 1 male, both small)
Change from previous year: -1 sim, -1 pet
Losses: Prince Elton graduated and moved to a Noble household.  Prince Laurence is at University and will probably become a Noble when he graduates, but since I don’t know where he’s going to end up after graduation, I’m still going to count him as a Royal for now.
2 elderly pets died, but a new cat was introduced to the household. One of the cats is a runaway and it doesn’t look like they will be coming back.
Nobles (13 households, 90 sims total)
10 elders (6 female, 4 male)
25 adults (14 female, 11 male)
13 young adults (8 female, 5 male)
20 teens (10 female, 10 male)
13 children (5 female, 8 male)
6 toddlers (4 female, 2 male)
3 babies (3 female)
6 dogs (4 female, 2 male / 1 large, 5 small)
5 cats (1 female, 4 males)
Change from previous year: +18 sims, +1 pet, +1 household
Losses: 3 sims died from illness, 2 married into a lower class, 4 pets died from old age.
Gains: 21 sims were born into households.  2 sims joined the Noble class by marriage.
The one new household was Princess Petunia and Thaddeus Durden returned from university.
Merchants / Middle Class (13 households, 63 sims total)
8 elders (4 female, 4 male)
29 adults (16 female, 13 male)
7 teens (3 female, 4 male)
11 children (4 female, 7 male)
4 toddlers (2 female, 2 male)
4 babies (2 female, 2 male)
5 dogs (3 female, 2 male / 1 large, 4 small)
8 cats (3 female, 5 male)
Change from previous year: +16 sims, +7 pets, +1 households
Losses: 4 deaths from old age, 3 deaths from illness, 1 moved to the Peasant class.
Gains: 16 births, 8 married or moved in from another class.
The one new household is Jonathan Durden and Meredith Ajjanagadde.  I don’t think of them as Merchants, but until I have more “Middle Class” households, I’m going to group them in together.  The Laughlin household was lost this year, but I think Justice’s household is new since he would have been promoted at the end of last year and not counted in the previous census.
Peasants (11 households, 49 sims total)
3 elders (2 female, 1 male)
19 adults (10 female, 9 male)
11 teens (5 female, 6 male)
7 children (1 female, 6 male)
7 toddlers (2 female, 5 male)
2 babies (1 female, 1 male)
9 dogs (5 female, 4 male / 9 large, 1 small)
2 cats (2 female)
Change from previous year: +15 sims, -2 pets, +1 household
Losses: 2 sims died from illness.
Gains: 15 births, 2 moved or married in.
The one new household is Elias Peasant and Christa Midlock.
____________________________________________________________
Not a lot has changed since the previous year, so I’m not going to bother to post the graphs.  All my classes are growing, except the Royals, which is to be expected since it is a single household.  (The graph for the Royal population is very symmetrical, peaking with 12 sims in year 3.)
The net gain of sims in the kingdom was 46 which is nearly the same as Year 5 with 48.  The growth rate might be leveling out.
The proportions of each class have stayed mostly the same since the previous year.  Royals went from 4% to 2%, Nobles from 45% to 44%, Merchants from 30% to 31%, and Peasants from 22% to 23%.
___________________________________________________________
I am always tweaking my points system, partially because I forget how I did things previously.  (Looking back at my previous year-end-reviews, there are a lot of ideas I’d forgotten . . .) Other than making some changes to the numbers and formulas, I decided to add a line of succession bonus for my upper classes and an age deduction for everyone.  My points are really heavy on aspiration, which is naturally going to be higher for older sims, so I subtracted each sims’ age times 10 from their score in the interest of helping younger sims (though I’m not sure that it does much.)
At the end of Year 6, I had 24 sims who were in line to the throne. I added bonus points ranging from 500-0 in increments of 25.  Twins got the same number of points as each other.  This just left Biana and Olivia Burgos at the bottom of the list that ended up with no points.  The bonus points are not set, but will be adjusted annually.
The top ten currently in line to the throne are:
Princess Lila - 500 pts.
Lady Louisa Durden - 475 pts.
Princess Violette - 450 pts.
Princess Rona - 425 pts.
Princess Ruby - 425 pts.
Lady Ramona - 400 pts.
Princess Nova - 375 pts.
Princess Hyacinth - 350 pts.
Princess Sheridan - 325 pts.
Lady Sharona - 300 pts.
___________________________________________________________
Noble Households
Queen Rosalin’s hold on the throne remains safe, as no one comes near her in the points ranking.  Not much has changed in most of my upper class households from Year 5, but I am going to put the households in ranking order, according to their points and see if that changes next year.  (I also need to update last names at some point.)
Royal
Head of household: Queen Rosalin Royal
Spouse: None
Heir: Princess Lila Royal
Household Score: 6861

Head of household: Lady Cora Burgos
Spouse: None
Heir: Lady Colette Burgos
Household Score: 4196
Income: 4000
Lyndlia:
Head of household: Princess Dahlia Royal

Heir: Princess Lynette or Princess Cecily Royal (twins)
Household Score: 3728
Income: 3500
Beamont:
Head of household: Lady Beatrix Burgos
Spouse: Sir Montague Durden
Heir: Lady Sophie Burgos
Household Score: 3693
Income: 3500
Rocade:
Head of household: Princess Hyacinth Royal
Spouse: Sir Claudius Cade
Heir: Princess Sheridan Royal
Household Score: 3672
Income: 3500
Pederson:
Head of household: Princess Violette Royal

Heir: Princess Ruby Royal
Household Score: 3658
Income: 3500
Cadeking:
Head of household: Lady Elaine Cade
Heir: Lady Elise Cade
Household Score: 3295
Rank: Countess
Income: 3000
(Elaine and Tobias are just living together and never got remarried.  She should marry him though, because that would bump their score up above Dahlia’s.)
? - Formerly Kara and Lorenzo’s household
(I’m not sure if I should count them, because I didn’t move Princess Rona in until the beginning of the next year, but maybe I should have moved her in one the last day of spring.  Now that I look at it, I might have been off on her graduation date . . .  This is basically a new household in an old house with some of the members of the former household living there.)
Head of household: Princess Rona Royal
Spouse: None (But should be Erik Durden soon.)
Heir: Lady Ramona Royal
Household Score: 2928
Income: 2500
Royden:
Head of household: Princess Petunia Royal
Spouse: Thaddeus Durden
Heir: Princess Willa Royal
Household Score: 2976
Income 2500
Clarett:
Head of household: Lady Clarissa Cade
Spouse: Brett Burgos (betrothed)
Heir: Lady Miranda or Lady Chastity Cade (twins)
Household Score: 2383
Income: 2000
Elover:
Head of household: Lady Elodie Burgos
Spouse: Nicholas Barthelet
Heir: Lady Bianca or Lady Olivia Burgos (twins)
Household Score: 2023
Income: None
(Marrying Nicholas was a very bad idea for her ranking.  Without him, she would have been above Princess Rona. I am using the household scores to determine points that offspring get for their rank.  If I hadn’t used the previous years scores, her children would have suffered too.)
___________________________________________________________
Merchant Households
I still haven’t quite figured out how to use the points for my merchant class.  The individual points for each sims is easy enough.  I calculate the merchants and peasants in the same way, but I’m not sure how to calculate the business points.  It gets complicated when I have households that run multiple businesses and businesses that were passed down from one generation to the next.
2000 is the threshold value for my Noble class.  The only merchants that have a personal score over 2000 are Garen Durden, who was born a Noble, but he and his wife Pasiphae average a score below 2000, and Justice, who was promoted from the Peasants at the end of the last year.   But having over 2000 is why he got promoted last time.   Even with -500 for being born a peasant and -610 for his age, his score is 2881, which is higher than a lot of my Nobles.  His businesses are low ranked though.  Since his personal score is so high, I ended up giving him an income like I did with the Nobles.
My current households and points are:
Ajjanagadde - 1540 pts (using the Nobles point system.  I should probably see how the Merchant score compares.  The biggest difference are badges and how I score BFFs)
Meredith Ajjanagadde and Jonathan Durden
No business owned
Carpenter
Timothy and Kitty Carpenter - 800 pts.
The Carpenter Shoppe - 55 pts.
Collin
Morgan Collin - 513 pts.  (Morgan is the one Audrey left the businesses to.  Mallory and Nathaniel average 1294 pts.)
The Shore - 10 pts.
The Church - 100 pts.
The Farmer’s Market -  -30pts.
Fancey
Allyn Livingston - 1187 pts. (Chloe Fancey - 986 pts., Marlin Livingston - 470 pts.)
Fancey Restaurant - 495 pts.
Farmer
Caleb Farmer and Aiyanna Kwa - 613 pts.
Farmer’s Lot -  -20  (This business was doing so poorly that I closed and then reopened it to give the family a chance.)
Hanby
Jordan Hanby and Patrick Peasant - 1417 pts.
The Hobby Shoppe - 610 pts.
Jenron
Rebekah and Darius Peasant - 799
The Hideaway - 130
Justice
Justice Peasant, the good witch - 2881
Justice’s Potion Shoppe -  -30
The Pet Shoppe - 100
The Pet Park (The Pet Cemetery) - 0
Potter
Katrina Potter and Derrick Vijayakar - 1475
The Pottery Shoppe - 1680
The Craft Lot - 10
Smith
Florence Smith and Apollo Tavern - 396
The Smithy - 65
Tavern
Pasiphae Tavern and Garen Durden - 1860
The Tavern - 3410
Community Lot Tavern -  -400
Vijayakar
Lindsay Vijayakar and Colby Schamess - 1446
The Magic Carpet Shoppe - 475
___________________________________________________________
Peasant Households
Deducting points for age really helped prevent too many of my Peasants from being promoted up to Merchants (which was one of my goals for adding an age component).  My highest ranking Peasants are still the oldest Peasants.  Here are the top ten Peasants:
Jeremiah - 1761
Brooke Tellerman (who was originally a townie and doesn’t have the -500 deduction.  She brought a lot of money with her that made her and Hugo’s scores higher) -  1557
Clare - 1544
Madeline - 1386
Vivian - 1261
Braxton - 1212
Ezra - 1085
Raymond - 947
Hugo - 895
Marisa Shahan (originally a townie) - 670
Without the age deduction Jeremiah and Clare would have been over the 2000 threshold and Madeline would have been just under 2000.  Earnest, who was high enough to be promoted last year, is still scoring well above 2000 (2388 using the Nobles system) so I think the age deduction is working well without dropping scores too much.

Violette Neatley Anderson
Tumblr media
Violette Neatley Anderson was born in London in 1882. Her family later immigrated to the United States and settled permanently in Chicago. Two years after graduating from Chicago Law School, Anderson successfully defended of a woman who stood accused of murdering her husband. As a result of this case, Anderson was appointed assistant prosecutor in Chicago, becoming the first African-American and the first woman to hold this position. In 1926, she was admitted to practice before the US Supreme Court. Anderson also worked to secure the passage of the Bankhead-Jones Act, a law that gave sharecroppers and tenant farmers access to low-interest loans, allowing them to become farm owners.
Violette Neatley Anderson died in 1937 at the age of 55.

INQUISITOR/SAMSON 34 or 65
Thank you for asking :)
I wanted to do both at first, but I couldn’t really figure out how to do it without spoiling Fire at the Heart of the World a little more than I wanted to. So I picked #34, but I’m keeping the other tucked away in a corner of my mind because it’s such a good one and I might use it in the main fic (so stay tuned)!
This story takes place post-Trespasser.
[100 Dialogue Prompts]
Read on AO3prompt: “i shouldn’t be allowed to be this happy.”pairing: female inquisitor x raleigh samson.rating: t.
Samson remembered the way Skyhold had been bustling with life when the Inquisition had captured him in the Arbor Wilds. There had been merchants setting shops in the courtyards, next to the soldiers sparring under the watchful eyes of a superior officer — sometimes Cullen, when he could free himself from the overwhelming amount of paperwork and meetings he had to attend as the commander of the Inquisition’s forces.
The main hall had been filled with guests of various social standings, from the highest of dignitaries to the poor farmers who had come to offer their services. Hundreds had been packed in the hall to witness Samson’s trial and he suspected more had been waiting outside, eager to see his head roll off. The Inquisitor’s decision to spare him must have sorely disappointed them. Learning about their subsequent affair must have angered them. Samson sometimes wondered how many of them had already been gone by the time Divine Victoria had called for the Exalted Council.
Only a handful of guards remained. Trusted ones, he’d been told, handpicked by Commander Cullen, Seeker Pentaghast and Lieutenant Harding. It was over. The Inquisition had performed its duty, destroyed Corypheus, closed the Breach and restored order. It was time to pack up and move on.
Violette was taking the dissolution of the organization a lot better than anyone had anticipated. Most had expected her to keep it going and serve the Divine. After all, without her title, she was nothing. A one-armed, knife-eared old woman who was as likely to vanish from history as her predecessor had.
These people grossly misunderstood the kind of woman Violette was.
Samson found her in the garden, tending to her plants and looking radiant. She couldn’t have cared any less about the Chantry, or Orlais, or Ferelden. She had never wanted to be a hero, let alone become Inquisitor. The Exalted Council must have come as a blessing for her in spite of the events that had followed it.
“You look happy,” he noted as he approached her.
She smiled up at him. “That’s because I am happy.”
Kneeling down next to her, he proceeded to inspect one of the sprouts the way she had shown him two years ago. The prophet’s laurel had almost reached its full maturity. Its berries weren’t the right shade of red yet, but they would be in a week or two. Skyhold would be empty by then, of course, but maybe Violette planned to take her plants with her.
“Are you happy too?”
Samson paused. It wasn’t so much her question that took him by surprise, but the soft tone in Violette’s voice. He had only ever heard her talk to her daughters like that, with this kind of genuine tenderness.
“I am,” he muttered with a frown.
“But you still don’t think you deserve it,” she finished for him.
“No, not after everything I’ve done,” he hissed. “Andraste’s arse, I shouldn’t be allowed to be this happy.”
“Samson,” she sighed. “It’s been two years. You’ve more than made up for your mistakes by now.”
“It will never be enough.”
“It is for me,” she retorted perhaps more harshly than she had intended to before planting a firm kiss on his lips. “Now come on, Cullen isn’t here today and I want you to take me on his desk.”
Samson snorted. “How can I refuse such a tempting offer?”

Obrien ( a land of eight nearly united kingdoms )
Oriens -- The largest and most diverse country, serves as the unofficial capital of Obrien. Is home to human, dwarven and vampire realms. Home of the dwarves of Jorrsgar and the Emerald Mountains, who separated from the Duregbag dwarves long ago to achieve democracy. Noble houses are aplenty in the land, but there also an abundance of commoners living comfortably middle or lower class. Though there is poverty, jobs are fairly easy to come into. The people of Oriens are opened-minded, due to being exposed to many races and cultures, but there are always a select many that stay prejudiced to others unlike themselves.
Sanct Amell -- The capital and home of the royal family, named after one of Obrien’s long deceased saints, Sister Catherine Amell. It used to be a humble and quaint town, full of the middle and lower class among the towering castle, but gentrification has began making changes to the village and it’s quickly becoming a bustling city. Some of the upper class seek to move closer to the castle, prices raising and forcing the middle and lower class out of their homes. Home of Cypress.
Charles -- Named after the late Lord Roywood Charles, ancestor of the current King Heathwood Charles. And, no, no more Charles men have been named after wood. A romantic and lively town, full of creative architecture, art, and music. Home of the upper and middle class. Charles is also the home of the Bard’s College, where many come to learn the trade of song.
Sanct Marie -- Named after the long deceased saint, Lady Marie Flores. A more humble area of Oriens, this is also a town where middle and lower class usually reside. It’s quiet and far from the other cities, ripe with greenery and animals. Farmers and ranchers like to make a living there. A true country town.
Lissa -- Named after a late princess of Oriens, Princess Lissa Ysell, who’s untimely death of illness caused her parents so much grief that they named a town after her. Lissa is a gated settlement where many of the wealthy are located. One must make $$$$$ amount of money to reside there.
Seline -- Named after the late Queen, Seline Del Rio, who was Oriens’ primary ruler once upon a time after her father’s death. Seline is a mountainous region, filled with grassy plains and plenty of rain. Much like Sanct Marie, it’s a country region far from city life.
Lisanct -- A port town and the only predominantly human settlement that’s not named after a person. It is believed that Oriens stemmed from Lisanct and grew from there.
Mudarra -- A forest region, bombarded with trees and and other vegetation. It is said that the moon and stars are most beautiful when seen from a clearing in the Mudarra forest, but it is also home to a vampire clan. However, the vampire clan has sworn not to suck the blood of human -- lest they be purged from Oriens and life all together by the Oriens guard. Such a deal was struck long ago and is upheld by a treaty. To keep the peace, the clan is strict with what vampires come in and out of Oriens. Each member is registered and kept under surveillance by clan prefect. The leaders of the vampire clan are Garnet and Slate. All vampires that come in give up their old lives and names, renamed after stones. Lately though, Slate has been getting tired of living under human rules. He believes that the vampires are losing the power they once held over the world. Why should they fear what humans will do to them?
Emerald Mountains -- A large dwarven region that takes up nearly half of Oriens; separated by a large mountainous region that borders Seline and Lissa. Unlike the dwarves of Jorrsgar, the dwarves of the Emerald Mountains kept their strong caste system that rooted from Duregbag and is ruled by royalty and several noble houses. King Agni is a distant cousin of the current King of Duregbag, King Afolabi, and their family cut ties after Agni’s ancestors left Duregbag to rule elsewhere. Greed was the root, both families simply wanting to have power, and it sprouted a war in the bloodline. What ended the inner war was the split up.
Jorrsgar -- A humble town of dwarves, in between Sanct Marie and Lisanct, that believed Agni’s family truly wanted democracy. When that wasn’t the case, they left and created a settlement of their own, protected by the Oriens royal family. Their current mayor is Hilde Gold Hand.
Sybil -- A primarily human country, but it borders Orc and Shifter territory that are not in Sybil’s protection. Sybil is larger, albeit more old fashioned than Oriens; long ruled by a royal family under the surname Harebell. It’s current ruler is the unmarried Queen Marth-Marie Harebell, inherited from the late King Renald Harebell after his untimely death. Queen Marth is accompanied in ruling by a string of advisers and her hand, Violette de Montsimmard. Though reserved towards outsiders, the people of Sybil are no strangers to mages and magic users. They seek to help control them instead of eradicating or banishing them, therefore establishing the only Mage’s College in all of Obrien. Establishing such has created a large mage population in the country, which they are struggling to control. Each mage must register themselves (or be forced to) and must give blood for a phylactery, which can trace magic back to whoever cast it.
White City -- The capital, where the royal family resides. The streets and large buildings of the town are made with white stone and the city is quite picturesque to look at. The palace, made of beautiful pearly stone and marble itself, towers over the other large structures. The White City is very much a marketplace, houses and living spaces few or right above a store; where the store owners live.
Riverwell -- Right off from the White City, this is where the homes that the White City lacks usually are. Upper and middle class live here.
Brightenwood -- A quaint town, home to the largest library in all of Obrien; the Brightenwood Guild of Education. Despite it’s name, formerly a college for the wealthy, it’s open to all and is mainly used as a public library. True to it’s name, the town is surrounded by woodland and there’s hardly a cloudy day -- save for the colder seasons. There is a Brightenwood Old Town, gentrified by the wealthy, and simply Brightenwood; where the middle and lower class stay. Home of Hamsa.
Marshlands -- Not protected by the Sybil royal family, but apart of the country. This is an orc realm, separated from the Orcs of Azacstan. These are a group of Orcs that found Azacstan’s bloody and aggressive culture too much to live with and sought a better life for themselves. They seek for other races to see them as peace lovers, but the Orcs of Azacstan have terrorized all of Obrien for many years. They are often antagonized by raiders from Azacstan, constantly asking for Sybil’s protection and for the royal family to send more guards to help them. Long has the late King Choi turned a deaf ear to them, perhaps Queen Marth will hear them out.
Black Forest -- Shifter territory, home to several pacts of animal shifters that do not need the protection of Sybil. A forest region, so overrun with greenery that the sun is merely a small peep in the sky. Humans dare not set foot there.
Hidden Forest -- A region, far off from Brightenwood, that is not documented on the map. This is home to a clan of vampires that name themselves after flowers. The clan is primarily for young vampires undergoing their chrysalis (fluctuating emotions that young vampires and dhampyr go through), but word among creatures of the night is that older vampires have also disappeared around this region -- seen again within the clan, memories of life outside of it erased. There seems to be no leader within this clan, except for an unknown master from the Blood Council. It is co-run by prefects. This is the vampire clan that Cypress is a prefect of.
Dawnstar -- A fae realm, in which humans are warned away from. If a non-fae steps foot in Dawnstar, they’ll only be met with an endless forest. In this endless forest, one is prone to being the victim of several types of fae -- good and bad.
Kur Vashox -- A large country in between Oriens and Sybil, ruled by several Jarls. More so than relying on bloodlines, Kur Vashox has a culture of fending for oneself and ‘survival of the fittest’. If a Jarl was uprooted and defeated by another one day, that person who defeated the Jarl would become the new Jarl. If the people of a town collectively decide that their Jarl is unfit and seek to seat another, they have all right to forcefully uproot that Jarl and place the other in the seat. Otherwise, it is the Jarl’s choice for who comes after them. Not determined by birth, but who’s fit for the seat. Kur Vashox is unofficially democratic. The Kurians are a hearty people. The land is nearly surrounded by the sea and, as such, they have become a sea faring folk. Nearly every Kurian has been on a ship in their life and many middle to upper class family have their own small boats; which are kept in the port
Morgal -- Capital of the country and it’s port city. Many merchants make a living there.
Valenguard -- A simple town to the naked eye, nothing much but a few houses, stores, and a tavern. To those who know better, it’s home to the Emerald Eye; a guild of thieves who’s members are spread across Obrien.
Ervisgur
Ysgor
Duregbag -- A dwarven kingdom inside of a large mountain, so it has no cities -- only districts. Duregbag has a strict caste system and is run by the wealthy and nobility. Their King, Afolabi, is a man who listen to those with the deepest pockets and turns away from the poor. In Duregbag, the wealthy can take up harems -- the owner of it can be man or woman. The people in these harems get a monthly salary, so many of the better-looking people in poverty turn to being apart of a wealthy patron’s harem. That or sell themselves into servitude. There are dwarves who live just outside of Duregbag, surface dwarves. These dwarves still fall under the reign of the King, but enjoy a little more freedom outside of the caste system. There is another castle just off from Duregbag, at the very top of the mountain. It is known that this castle belongs to a strange dragon (Hamsa), who appears to be docile. The people of Duregbag dare not bother it.

My headcanons for my Hunger Games AU: what districts everyone would be in if they were in the Hunger Games!
District 1: This district makes luxury goods and is considered the wealthiest district, having a generally favorable relationship with the Capitol. I decided Nathaniel and Amber would be their tributes. They are twins from a wealthy family. Nathaniel’s father has pushed him to train for the Hunger Games since he was a young child, while Amber has been showered with affection and dreams of living in the Capitol. Both of them are relatively confident about winning the Hunger Games, though Nathaniel feels resentful towards his father and the Capitol as a whole for the whole thing. Although he begins by teaming up with and defending his sister, he won’t hesitate to eliminate her if she stands in his way of winning.
District 2: Another “Career” district, this district is full of stonemasons & blacksmiths who build the nation’s cities. This district also produces weapons and trains Peacekeepers. As children in the district are raised with a “warrior mindset” I figured the male tribute would be Evan. For the female tribute, I decided on Charlotte, because she seems quick-witted and strong-willed, not hesitating to use things like blackmail to get her way, which suits her as coming from a long family line of corrupt Peacekeepers. Although Charlotte knows she will be a Peacekeeper and has had combat training, Evan can only hope, as the family he has been living with have traditionally been composed of bricklayers. Despite this, a life of physical labor has made Evan strong and a formidable opponent in the games.
District 3: This district manufactures electronics, producing the nation’s advanced technology. Who better for this district’s male tribute than Armin? Deciding on the female tribute was a little harder, but I settled on Priya because of her intelligence. Both of them have worked in factories their entire lives. Priya just tries to get by, working hard to support her family as her father is unable to work due to an injury. Armin is more adept at creating electronics with scrap materials from the factory and actually enjoys doing so. He is a bit of a rebel, blatantly hates the Capitol, and plans on using his inventions to protect himself from them. He also wants to find the rest of his family, as they have been separated and relegated to different districts.
District 4: Another wealthy district, their main export is seafood, and most residents work in the fishing industry. I figured Dake would be the male tribute here, due to his surfer boy persona and how you first meet him on a beach. I see Dake as a Finnick Odair type in the games- beloved by the audience due to his looks and acting cocky. For the female tribute, I choose Capucine, just because I felt she would come from a career district, but Districts 1 & 2 didn’t really suit her.
District 5: District 5 is responsible for energy, powering the rest of the nation. For the male tribute, I choose Alexy. I figured maybe Evan, Armin and Alexy all grew up in District 5, but there was an overpopulation problem in the district so as they were trained for their respective jobs as children, Evan was taken into District 2 due to his physical prowess and Armin was intelligent enough to be transferred to District 3. Poor Alexy was left in District 5. For the female tribute, I figured Melody would fit in, possibly working as a system analyst or equipment manager in her district before shes pulled into the Hunger Games.
District 6: This is the transportation district, producing mechanics, conductors, etc. This one was a little harder to decide tributes for, but I eventually settled on Iris as the female tribute. For some reason, I just feel like her family could fit in really well as train conductors, lol. Because I already decided on districts for the other boys, I figured the male tribute could be her younger brother Thomas. I think Thomas could be intelligent enough to possibly be training as a mechanic for the hyper-speed trains they have, while I imagine Iris in overalls, hands covered in oil, and her hair pulled up into her cap as she works on a railroad to support her family.
District 7: This is the lumber district, so the people there have to be strong, good with an ax, and maybe a little hard-headed. For some reason, the female tribute popped into my head as Deborah. Maybe because she reminds me of Johanna- who is also rude and overconfident. For the male tribute, I choose Castiel (and not because of his connection to Deborah, actually) but because imagining him as a lumberjack is funny as hell. I feel like he would be quite good with an ax and his snarky attitude fits this district.
District 8: This district’s primary industry is textile production, and most of the jobs are things like dressmakers, designers, etc. Obviously, the tributes from this district would be Rosalya and Leigh. This district’s rebellious tendencies also go with Rosalya’s blunt personality. I imagine her feeling her capabilities are constrained, as well as realizing the unfairness for those that work in the factories. Her and Leigh are both lucky in that they are talented enough not to have to work directly on the production line, but they still work long, grueling hours.
District 9: Grain production is the primary industry of district 9. I felt Jade would be the best for the male tribute, being as the vast majority of people work as farmers. For the female tribute, I choose Li because she didn’t really fit anywhere else.
District 10: District 10′s industry is animal agriculture/livestock production. For the male tribute, I choose Lysander, because of his experience working on a farm when he lived with his parents and his love of animals. Lysander breeds the cattle and is quite fond of the calves. He always feels bad about the poor conditions they live in and tries not to think about where they end up. The female tribute I decided to be Peggy, because she just seems like she could be a farm girl?
District 11: The agriculture district, where the people work in orchards and fields. The inhabitants typically have dark skin, and it is largely for this reason that I choose Dajan and Kim as their tributes. I feel like Kim especially would be strong and tall enough for the physical labor working in the district requires, and she would therefore be pretty formidable in the arena.
District 12: The smallest and poorest district, their main industry being coal mining. I figured our main character Candy would be perfect as District’s 12 tribute, as the main character in the Hunger Games is from this district. Being from Candy’s first school, Kentin as the male tribute was apparent. I imagine he was originally a sickly kid with a huge crush on Candy, but when he was old enough to work in the mines, it changed him significantly, giving him a negative outlook on life. Kentin and Candy are probably both from the Seam. I imagine a Katniss & Gale relationship between them.
edit: I realized I didn’t add Violette as a tribute! I think subconsciously I don’t want her to be one because she’s too soft and sweet. Regardless she would probably either be District 7, a papermaker or something, District 8, working as a designer, or maybe even District 12 with Candy.

autumn winds memory: the sweetness of friendship.
{year: 2108. Date: October 28th, autumn's age: 9. Frisks age: 8. Exactly four years before the tragedy.} it was a peaceful autumn day, the trees wore leaves that blew in the wind as they floated to the ground, every leaf a beautiful shade of sunset or amber orange, frisk and autumn walked through the busy school hallways on their way to class for English, until they came across the bulletin board on the wall that showed many of different posters and flyers representing upcoming events. [*Hey frisk look!] Autumn pulled a Flyer from the bulletin board hearing a tear in the paper as she didn't remove the pin first, autumn showed frisk the flyer, it was for a Halloween bakesale happening later that day. Frisk groaned in regret "i haven't got any money!" Said frisk dramatically. Autumn put her arm around frisks shoulder and smiled, frisk looked at autumn confused. [*Hey, cheer up its almost Halloween! Think about it! In four days and five hours it's candy time! It's gonna be awesome right?] Frisk giggled and smiled. "Yeah, you bet it is." Autumn pulled away and gave frisks arm a friendly punch buggie, not using enough force to hurt her of course. Frisk giggled and rubbed her arm slightly, [*oh speakin of which have you made up you're mind? The lunger? Or the brain farmer?] Frisk knew what Autumn was talking about, costumes, frisk shrugged "i dunno yet, maybe we could both have matching costumes? Should they be scary? Like a witch and her cat?" Said frisk in a suggestive way. Autumn imagined frisk as a cat and giggled a bit, not to be mean, but because she thought frisk would simply look cute, [*i call dibs on the witch!] Frisk pouted. "Aww, no fairs!!" Frisk complained, puffing out her cheeks, autumn giggled and ruffled frisks hair, frisk could never stay mad for long when autumn was ruffling her hair, she burst into laughter as she playfully shoved autumn's hand off of her head. suddenly, frisk is pushed to the floor roughly, autumn looks in the direction of where the pusher is, autumn scowled, it was that boy again, he had short brown hair in a bowl cut, a bandaid on his nose, a red t-shirt with white long sleeves, blue jeans and black tied shoes. It was Danny. "Lookie who's fallen down! Get up you freak! Quit staining the floor with you're freak blood!" Danny spat, it was true, frisk had a nosebleed now due to the force of her fall. Nobody knew why Danny hated frisk except autumn, the truth was Danny was verbally abused by his mother, his father was the only one who loved him, everyone thought he bullied frisk because she didn't have a father, but autumn knew the truth, Danny was jeolous of frisk, because her mother's actually loved her. Frisk got up and ran away crying, holding her nose [*frisk!] "Yeah run away freak!" Danny yelled, then, autumn did something he never expected in his life, she grabbed a fistful of Danny's hair, forcing him to look at her. Autumn decided to act like she didn't know why he was mean to frisk. [*Why are you so mean to frisk? She's done nothing to ya, mind telling her friend instead?] Danny smirked. And replied "s-shes a freak, nobody has two moms, right? That's my reason." Autumn smiled creepily, scaring Danny a bit, she brought his face closer to hers. [*You were always a good liar Daniel, but i wasn't born today, i know the real reason why.] Sweat ran down Danny's face, he hesitated before asking "r-really? What?" Autumn grinned and got close to his ear, whispering. [*It's because you've never heard you're mommy say...] Autumn leaned in closer, what she said next broke his confidence. [*.."I love you".] Autumn pulled away letting Danny drop to his knees, tears formed in his eyes, threatening to spill. It was true, his mom never said that to him, autumn felt a little bad, she hates it when kids are abused or hurt by their parents, maybe she went a little far, but autumn knew she had to do something to get him to leave frisk alone. Autumn walked away, leaving Danny crying in the hall until a teacher came and scolded him for being late to class, before comforting him. Eventually the time came where the cakes and treats were on sale, autumn came up next with her money, the cakes were ten cents, autumn had about 3 dollars, not expecting the prices to be so low, autumn decided to buy some for frisk as well, seeing as before she mentioned forgetting to bring money. After buying some treats for herself and frisk, she walked around the school playground, searching for frisk, suddenly, Autumn heard sobbing, it was coming from the basket ball court part of the playground, autumn walked across the asfalt, hopping over the painted white lines, leaves where scattered around as the soft winds blew them a few times, autumn eventually reached the source of the crying, it was coming from the small set of blue bleachers where students would sit and watch their friends play basketball, it was now covered in bright amber orange leaves. She saw frisk through the bleachers, who else would be wearing a grey t-shirt, long blue jean pants that slightly pooled over her green shoes, the ends of the legs were folded up so they wouldn't hit the floor and trip her up and of course, her friendship bracelet and pink flowery headband. Autumn walked around and ducked under the bleachers into the little space where small beams of sunlight shined through the cracks of the bleachers seats. Frisk looked up to see a girl wearing a purple violett assassin hoodie, long dark blue jeans, black converse sneakers with her hair tied up in a high ponytail, it was Autumn, autumn sat next to frisk and gave her a paper bag. [*i know you said you didn't have any money so I bought you some cake.] Frisk looked at the bag then back at Autumn, "what about you? You didn't have to do this." Said Frisk.Autumn put her arm around frisks shoulder and chuckled [*relax frisky, I've got some too, i had like, three bucks, besides, what kind of best friend would i be if i didn't help ya out?, Don't listen to Danny, he doesn't know you like i do, as long as I'm here, nobody will ever hurt you, i promise.] Frisk smiled and hugged autumn from the side, wrapping her arms around autumn's shoulders, autumn hugged her back, wrapping her arms around frisks upper back."Thank you, for being my best friend." Said frisk, Frisk pulled away and sat next to autumn, their backs facing the concrete wall behind them, they both stayed under the bleachers, laughing and eating the cakes they shared until the time came to go home. Frisk and autumn said their goodbyes and got in their parents cars, driving home.
To be continued...
[*Knowing how close you and frisk where back then, fills you with COURAGE]

A little reference for Violette! It’s very vague and honestly a mess, but it should get my points across!
Sorry if there are any grammatical errors or contradictory info
Name: Violette Marianne Fischer
Gender, sexuality, pronouns: cis female, bisexual, she/her
Age, birthday: 26 (as of year 1), winter 28
Loved items: complete breakfast, poppyseed muffin, ginger ale, coffee, chowder
Hated items: cherry, hot pepper, spicy eel, pepper popper
Partner: Harvey (husband)
Friends: Willy, Leah, Sebastian, Maru, Emily
Appearance: 5’4”. dark brown, chin-length hair. Olive, freckled skin. Green eyes
Character: Violette is an absent minded, nervous little ball of anxiety. She has a kind heart and tries her best to not be a burden on others. Once she breaks out of her timid shell, Violette is a giggly, energetic nerd who can find enjoyment in the most mundane things
Brief Background:
Violette lived in Zuzu city for almost her entire life with her big brother James, grandpa Lloyd, and her childhood friend Stella. James was an ambitious, happy-go-lucky guy. Despite being a trouble maker, he was beloved by many. Lloyd was like James but… old. Stella was witty and outgoing, but she had a rotten attitude that left a bitter impression on people
When Violette was 12, Lloyd’s health started to decline. At some point, he gave a letter to the siblings (You know. The letter). Lloyd passed away from illness 8 years later
Violette graduated University with a degree in architecture. Unfortunately, not much came of it. Violette and Stella found work with Joja together (yay finance buddies, what can go wrong?). Violette initially found her job tolerable, but it devolved to disdain. She kept pushing through hoping things will work out
When Violette was 24 James passed away in an accident. He was 29
Violette fell into a depressive headspace. She felt so exhausted she could barely get anything done. Public spaces, social events, even the traffic of the streets made her incredibly anxious and sick
Violette and Stella drifted apart. The two ended on rough terms
Violette, 26, remembered Lloyd’s letter, quits her job and leaves for his abandoned farm, unkempt ever since he moved to the city 23 years ago
Relationships:
Harvey: Violette tried to avoid the clinic as much as she could because hospitals stress her out. This idea quickly fell apart as she kept injuring herself due to her work
For the first little while the two had more moments of awkward silences than conversation. Violette never knew what to say to Harvey while Harvey didn’t want to press for personal stuff where it wasn’t his business
He stressed Violette to be more cautious due to how often she needed medical attention. Harvey was very patient, calm, and easygoing around her, alleviating some of the nerves she had around him after some time. Her dropping by the clinic became almost routine for them
Violette started to make gifts for him. It was a little way for her to show off her gratitude towards him (also because she felt terrible for making him worry all the time)
“I'd like to get to know you better. Let's put aside our doctor-patient relationship”. The two form a friendship even though they’re both a little too anxious for their own good
The two started spending time together outside of work. They surprisingly had a lot in common. Violette loved how easy he was to get along with. Harvey was glad to see her so lively and talkative knowing this stuff isn’t always easy for her. It was a big change from when they first interacted
Violette developed feelings for him (hell yeah)
Harvey had Violette on his mind a lot. Like he’d casually bring her up in conversations without realizing it (He’s not subtle at all). It’s been a long time since he had a serious relationship, he never considered it happening again at his current age. He’s having these lovey dovey feelings but is trying to rationalize them into anything other than romantic love
Harvey eventually had that “Oh.” moment where he realizes he is in fact, super in love with Violette
Pre-dating tension!!!
He confesses, they date. Violette proposes, they happily get married, and become the world’s lamest couple :)
Willy: Willy and Lloyd were very close friends and fishing partners back in the day. The two go way back to their childhoods
He remembers Violette from her youth. He welcomes her with open arms. The two end up catching up over lost time and reminisce on old memories
She sees a lot of her grandpa in Willy and finds comfort with him (emotional support fisherman!!!)
Willy is the 1st person in town Violette warms up to. She was relieved to see a familiar figure after many years
Seb, Emily, Maru, Leah: 🤷‍♀️
Random facts:
Her hobbies include reading, making crafts, interior design, whittling, building models, and napping… so much napping
She sucks at cooking and should never be allowed near a stove. The awful chef gene runs in her family
She can play the piano, harp, and guitar
She’s very clumsy and has a habit of misplacing things
She always wanted to be an architect
Her love languages are words of affirmation, and quality time
James was a shipwright. Lloyd was a carpenter and piano teacher before he owned the farm
She has a habit of putting her hand to her face when she’s nervous/deep in thought
Can’t believe this sat in my drafts unfinished for almost 2 months as of posting this oops

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE “TRIFECTA” ON JANUARY 31st January 31st will be a busy day in the sky, as three skygazing events are occurring together. First, there’s a total lunar eclipse -- the first time the Moon has been completely immersed in Earth’s shadow since September 27-28, 2015. Second, this event falls on the second full Moon of the month, what’s often called a “Blue Moon.” And, third, the eclipse comes just 27 hours after the Moon reaches its closest orbital point to Earth, called perigee. “It’s an astronomical trifecta,” notes Kelly Beatty, a senior editor at Sky & Telescope magazine. So is such a coincidence rare? Not especially. The last time a total lunar eclipse occurred near perigee was the one in September 2015. In fact, on that occasion the timing of perigee and the eclipse’s midpoint were less than 1 hour apart! The last time a complete lunar cover-up took place on the second full Moon of the month was December 30, 1982, at least as reckoned by local time in Europe, Africa, and western Asia -- locations where the event could be seen. That event also occurred at the Moon’s orbital perigee. The last “Blue Moon” total lunar eclipse visible from the U.S. and North America happened on March 31, 1866. But on that date the Moon was near apogee, its most distant point from Earth. Coming up after this month’s will be “Blue Moon” total lunar eclipses on December 31, 2028 (though not at perigee) and on January 31, 2037 (17 hours before perigee). Not-So-Super Moons The Moon’s orbit isn’t a perfect circle but instead is a slight ellipse. So during each orbit the Moon’s distance from Earth (center to center) varies from about 225,800 miles (363,400 km) at perigee to 252,000 miles (405,550 km) at apogee. So a full Moon that occurs at perigee is usually about 6% bigger and 12% brighter than when it’s at the average distance of 238,900 miles (384,400 km). At its orbital extremes, the full Moon at perigee can be up to 14% larger (and appear 30% brighter) than a full Moon at apogee. Yet even skilled skygazers are challenged to see any difference in size or brightness between an especially close full Moon and an ordinary one. For many people, the full Moon always looks unusually large when it’s near the horizon, an effect known as the “Moon illusion.” Images that show a huge full Moon rising dramatically above a city skyline don’t match the reality that your eyes see because the camera is magnifying the view. You can gauge the Moon’s apparent size at different times using the tip of your finger or a pencil eraser held at arm’s length, or by looking at it through a narrow straw. To us, the Moon always looks about 0.5° across. The term “supermoon” was coined in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle, though he applied the term to any time the full Moon -- or new Moon -- is within 90% of perigee. Sometimes two or three “supermoons” occur in a row. The Moon takes 27.3 days to orbit Earth (from perigee to perigee). But Earth moves partway around the Sun during that interval, and so it takes the Moon slightly longer -- 29.5 days -- to complete its cycle of phases. These closely-matched periods mean that sometimes the Moon is both full and near perigee for more than one month at a time. For example, the full Moons of last December 3rd, January 1st, and January 31st could all be called “supermoons.” “Blue Moons,” Then and Now In modern usage, the second full Moon in a month has come to be called a “Blue Moon.” But that hasn’t always been the case. “This colorful term is actually a calendrical goof that worked its way into the pages of Sky & Telescope back in March 1946,” Beatty explains, “and it spread to the world from there.” Before 1946, a Blue Moon always meant something else. Many people used the expression “once in a blue Moon” to mean something that occurs rarely, and some old songs use it as an expression of sadness or loneliness. There’s even a cocktail called a Blue Moon -- it’s a mix of gin, crème de violette (or blue curacao), and perhaps a twist of lemon. And, exceedingly rarely, the Moon actually does turn blue in our sky -- when a volcanic eruption, forest fires or dust storms send lots of fine dust into the atmosphere. However, the traditional astronomical definition was quite different. The term had been consistently used in the Maine Farmers’ Almanac to mean the third full Moon in a season containing four of them (rather than the usual three). But S&T’s 1946 writer, amateur astronomer James Hugh Pruett (1886-1955), incorrectly interpreted the almanac’s description, and the second-full-Moon-in-one-month usage was born. By either definition, Blue Moons happen about once every 2.7 years on average. Using the old, seasonal definition, the last occurrence happened in May 2016 and the next one will come in February 2019. Using the newer definition, we’ll enjoy Blue Moons both during January and again in March. Because of this sequence, there’ll be no full Moon at all in February -- and that hasn’t happened since 1999. IMAGE....A comparison of the Moon at its closest to Earth (left) and farthest. The change in distance makes the full Moon look up to 14% larger at perigee than apogee. Laurent Laveder SkyandTelescope.com.

Jen Violette
In a world of technological excess and social turmoil, one longs to return to the simple goodness of the earth and its bounty. Like a trip to the local farmer’s market, Jen Violette’s cornucopia of glass fruits and vegetables renews in the viewer a connection with the ground we walk upon and the faith that we remain part of a plan that makes life on earth sustainable.
A full-time glass and mixed media artist based in Wilmington, Vermont, Violette is known for her colorful, garden inspired glass sculptures that often incorporate metal and wood. Recreating plant structures with molten glass, the artist has mastered the use of glass powders to mimic the colors and textures found in nature. “Since the growing season is relatively short in Vermont, I enjoy gardening with molten glass to extend my growing season.”
A 27-year hot glass veteran, Violette received her BFA in Glass and Metal Sculpture from Alfred University School of Art & Design, Alfred, New York in 1994. She continued her glass art education through courses at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG), Corning, New York; the Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington; the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island; the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine; and Penland School of Crafts, Bakersville, North Carolina. Her mentors and inspirations include hot glass royalty such as Lino Tagliapietra, William Morris, Martin Janecky, Dante Marioni, Richard Marquis, the late Pino Signoretto, Randy Walker, Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen, Jasen Johnsen, Stephen Dee Edwards, Fred Tschida, Walter Lieberman, and Brian Pike.
Violette’s work can be found in private collections worldwide and is represented by a number of fine art glass galleries including Schantz Galleries Contemporary Art in Stockbridge, Massachusetts; Vetri Gallery in Seattle, Washington; Raven Gallery in Aspen, Colorado; Sandra Ainsley Gallery in Toronto, Canada; and Montague Gallery in San Francisco, California. Her work can also be found at Duncan McClellan Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida, where from October 12–14, 2018, the artist will be featured along with glass artist Claire Kelly in a weekend event including glass demos by both artists.
Currently fabricating larger scale installations and glass sculpturesdirectly mounted to the wall, Violette’s aesthetic now includes forest floor imagery with fall leaves and branches. She moves in and out of the seasons, simultaneously creating a spring inspired installation containing fiddlehead ferns and glass trilliums, as well as an homage to summer with black-eyed Susans and sunflowers, and a wall piece featuring large-scale ferns installed at different angles.
Upon her return from the Glass Art Society conference in Murano, Italy, in May2018, Violette will participate in a Vermont Crafts Council Studio Tour held during Memorial Day weekend. During August 6–11 the artist will teach her first class ever, a Creative Glass Sculpting Techniques workshop, at the CMOG Studio.
