Raggedy Andy

As some of you who've been reading for some time know, in addition to stuffed animals, I also repair (and actually make) cloth dolls. This part of the hospital is rather specialized, mostly all cloth dolls, not ones with plastic parts or mobile eyes or hand knitted ones. My specialty is fabric (including faux fur, obviously), and that's the equipment I have. But that does mean I get a lot of Raggedies. Raggedy Anns, Raggedy Annes (the name spelling really matters!) and Raggedy Andys. Today, I thought I'd share a story of a small handmade Raggedy Andy.

Andy had been loved for over twenty years when his person asked her mom to please get him fixed up. He had had a lot of adventures, and clearly some serious accidents! Here are his diagnosis photos:

And this is what he looked like as a young doll:

You can see that he's lost his face, and his clothes. Even his sewn on shoes were wearing off. And he had more injuries to his limbs and torso. You can also see that Andy was custom made... his face and clothing were both different from commercial raggedies, as was his foot shape.

I couldn't match his original jacket fabric, so I recommended his family choose a fabric they'd like and send that to the hospital with him. In addition to new clothes, and a new face, and other wound repair, he was going to get his shoes recovered and supplemental stuffing. Once he was in the hospital, we also agreed to recover the blue part of his hat (as it was quite worn, which is hard to see in the photos.

It took a bit of time, but soon, Andy was feeling more like himself. Here he is with his wounds repaired, new face, new pants, and new shoes:

You can see the torso and arm wounds were repaired, but the face is new. His pants button on, but his shoes (now velour) are sewn in place.

And here's Andy all spiffy in his full new outfit, ready to fly home:

His family wrote when they saw the photos:

Oh my goodness this is fantastic!! He looks amazing. I cannot thank you enough!! I love his new face and his heart is still there. Thank you for salvaging all you could. His outfit is wonderful. Thank you Thank you!!

And when Andy made it home they said:

Andy arrived!!  He looks amazing and just so incredible how he came back to life.  I am so happy and cannot wait to surprise my daughter. 

Amazing and just could cry.  This is her most valued memory from childhood.  Her Andy.

God help us – for art is long and life is short! (Faust: First Part, written by Johann Wolfgang Goethe and published in 1808)

hiiii heres the first part of what will (hopefully!!!) be a series of western women's fashion from 1800 to today. obviously, not all women looked like this or dressed like this. in fact, most didn't - these are largely going to be looks worn by women of a higher socioeconomic class, at least until maybe the 1880s. this is for a few reasons, mostly being, uh... availability of cc. i'd love to MAKE some historical cc but my laptop won't run blender. another reason is that the fashion of the upper classes is typically better recorded than that of lower classes, especially before the advent and popularization of photography. i'm just rambling now.

anyway! the first part: 1800-1809. we see the opulence of the georgians cling onto fashion in bows, feathers, and jewels. we also see the rise of waistlines to the iconic empire waist, and the influences of neoclassical aesthetics in fashion. hairstyles in particular were emulating those of the ancient greeks, also pulling a bit from the stuarts. this decade also allows me to share one of my favorite tidbits of fashion history: the coiffure à la titus! for a short time in the 1790s through the 1810s, some women (french women especially) took to cutting their hair short and choppy. the reasons range from inspiration taken from a popular play at the time, to symbolizing solidarity with women executed via guillotine. some men at the time thought that having short hair was actually hazardous to women's health, so while the titus cut wasn't the norm, it was widespread enough to cause quite a storm!

you'll notice that 1806 is missing. that's because the dress i used, uh... completely messed up the arms and i did not notice until i was making the gif. if you wanna see it, it'll be under the cut.

Hi!! Do you have any suggestions what therians can wear in the winter for canines and felines to make their animal present more while also taking care of not getting frostbite?

(not me answering this just in time for warm weather 😅 idk, maybe this one’s for my southern-hemisphere followers)

The first obvious answer that comes to mind is (faux-) fur clothing - personally I’m fond of (faux-) fur-trimmed suede and items that let me feel the fur on my skin, like scarves:

and depending on the situation and how human-passing you’re trying to be, there’s everything from mittens/gloves/socks with pawprints on them to outdoor feetpaws:

and of course you can wear a yarn tail in any weather :D (be very careful if you have a real animal’s tail though, they can be destroyed by moisture and stuff)

Copperstacks FASHION! feat. some guys from @100nebulas and @caffeinova. Ramble under the cut!

Common Materials for use in clothing are goat wool, byssus (Mussel silk, p common here), barkcloth, burlap, Fish Leather, Whale/Fish bone, Algal cloth, and furs. Brass, Bronze, Tin and Copper are the most common metals in the area, with most mechanical things being made of Brass or Bronze. Iron and steel are pretty uncommon. Gold is associated with the Church of Pyra, so it's value is a bit artificially inflated. Materials like Cotton, Insect Silks, Linen, velvet, and non-fish leather are more expensive due to being imported, and are more common in rich people fashions.

NOW onto the actual fashions here-

Eclipsed/Furis subculture originates from Eclipsed (werefolk) fashion and culture in Braima, with clothing often made of comfortable, flexible materials and designed to accommodate full or partial shifts into animal form without the need to change, and without the risk of damaging the cloth. They're usually made with goats wool, softened leathers, and "furcloth", a textile made by eclipsed from shed/shaved fur! Furis clothing is usually Asymmetrical, with a "silvery" main fabric and much brighter accessories and accents. Claw, fang, and horn caps/rings are all pretty common too! Non-eclipsed partaking in the fashion are typically dubbed "Furis" or, well. Furries! It's pretty widely embraced, with fake tails, fangs, and claws p much just as available as the jewelry designed for eclipsed! When prints/Symbols are involved, You'll find a lot depicting the two moons, Fangs, or paw prints/animal tracks! For some folks, faux-bite mark designs or embroidery are also involved, though some think its a bit in poor taste.

Divend/Dockends! The names are both slang for Dive hands and Dock Hands! Divehands is the nickname for folks who work in the tide pools, especially farming silk mussels. Dock hands is just the general term for those who work at the docks, usually loading or unloading stuff from boats. People who like the aesthetic for non-work reasons are effectively like. Lighthouse aesthetic enjoyers? y'know the type. usually they're marked by Oilskin boots and raincoats, Fish leather waterproofed through whale oil. The coats are usually Blue/Green, usually bright when first made, and darkening with age. Pants are usually canvas or similarly thick and durable, and tops are usually either like, button-ups, or in colder weather, wool sweaters. Wool hats and gloves are also common.

Spirifers! They're goth. Spirifers are Braima's goths. Literally the whole intent with spirifer fashion is to look like a Ghost. Clothing is usually wispy or has some kind of "flow" to it, with a faint iridescence and Monochromatic clothing (usually white-gray-black) broken up by bright red accents. There's a variant of spirifers that's a bit spikier, with a tendency to Darker colors and Blue/Purple accents rather than Red, that borrows some points from Scrap aesthetic. Alexi's "villain fit" is partially where it originated, though there'd always been a bit of an underground scene in the "aesthetics of those dubbed villains", made a bit more prominent when Alexi had his "Magical girl anime antagonist" moment. Then there's the "Corps", Pronounced "Corpse" and short for Corporate, Corps fashion is typical business wear, Dress shirts, black pants, suits and ties, etc. With... an edge. For those "in the know", Corps fashion is actually more than just business casual- It's a signifier that you support, or are a member of, the Mafia. Black or red tops for those who get their hands dirty, white for those too high rank to do so. Jewelry that seems a bit out of place- piercings, symbol heavy rings, etc. Clip on ties, tie alternatives or a lack of a tie altogether to avoid strangulation, holsters hidden on garters or under sleeves, iron toed shoes, tattoos- All signifiers that someone is a Bit More than just a businessman. Tarnished copper that's been waxed/lacquered in order to preserve the green tones is also Very common among Corps jewelry.

Scraps are punks. they're punks who sometimes build their own computers and bikes out of industrial scrap. A lot of scrap fashion originates with Pirates! Anti-government sentiment.Pants made from sailcloth, steel toed leather boots, Woven cord belts, Poet shirts with the sleeves off and leather vests, usually wearing whatever contraptions they've built themselves on their belt or arm. Many of them carry swords/Knives hidden in some way on their person- This is illegal, they don't care.

There's like, a subgroup of Scraps who specifically are against the church of Pyra, and they incorporate a lot more Shark imagery, Sharp teeth, Electricity, Rainbow Neon and brass scale-mail in a nod to Uxsoi, a god of like, storms and madness. Where scraps are punk, these guys are like... EDM/Rave aesthetics paired with like, Satanists? Still punk, but a very different flavor! more occult.

DIY tshirts and stuff is big in scrap culture overall.

honestly though its for most folks, its basically just modern day fits, tshirts, pants, dress shirts, etc etc. The fashion subcultures are just a bit different.

Sahar leans against the brick wall of the upscale apartments in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, watching as the woman in a faux fur accented jacket (don’t want to be seen as an animal killer after all) talks on her cellphone not even bothering to acknowledge the man in a pageboy hat opening her door, making her way inside while the doorman hands over the cash. The man simply smiles, counting to make sure it’s all there before thanking him in Spanish. She smirks making her way to sit in the seat next to the driver, “Funny running into you here, Jakey.”

“Yes because it's such a coincidence with you Sahar,” he snorts, settling himself behind the wheel, “Something wrong?”

“It’s been a bit quiet since we took care of Harrow don’t you think?” He cocks a brow, “Among the gods. None of them really died, just their avatars.”

“You sound sure of yourself.”

“I did some research and made Strange help me with a quick tracking spell. All of them are still here on earth….again.”

HIs knuckles turn white driving through the New York traffic, “Does this mean Ammit-?”

She shakes her head, “No. She’s still dead and is gonna stay that way. But even Khonshu has been quiet.”

He frowns brows knitting together a moment, “You have a point. Neither of us has heard anything about a new mission.”

“It worries me.”

“Will Marc and Steven-?”

“I’ve been keeping an eye on them, don't worry. Just came back from London actually,” she gives a half hearted chuckle, “Only person hanging around is Crawley and its because he’s worried about having not seen Steven in a little while.”

Jake nods, readying to speak when the clouds start to quickly overtake the sky. He pulls over the two of them stepping out watching as a stone door opens on the side of a building. Jake takes a step back, “It’s the gods isn’t it.” Sahar nods, eyes scanning for the bird skull, “They can’t know,” he says, turning with wide eyes, “They can’t know about me and what I’ve done for them.”

“I know,” she steps closer to the entry, feeling the cool breeze against her face, “Give them the body as soon as you step in. I’ll be right behind you.”

“I don’t like this,” Steven mumbles, swinging the dim flashlight’s beam back and forth, “Don’t like this one bit.”

“Steven, you're fine.” Marc reassures through the reflecting metal of the flashlight, “Just keep calm like you are now and keep moving forward.”

“You’re not supposed to be helping me, you know.”

“Well am I telling you where to go? Or how to go about it?”

Steven pauses, giving thought before finally shrugging, “Guess not.”

“How we doing out there, Steven?” Sahar’s voice says with static into the comms, “You make it to the first checkpoint?”

“Uh…I think so,” he looks around the underground of the unfamiliar city, “It is kind of hard to tell down here though.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Well I’m in a dark place to start-.”

“Mentally or physically,” his shoulders relax a little hearing her laugh to her own joke, “I think you may have went right past it though.”

Steven let’s out a groan, “Oh bollocks.” He turns around with a huff, “Sahar I’m starting to wonder if all of this is really necessary. I don’t see you putting Marc through this.”

“She puts me through worse.”

“What does she do that’s worse?”

“Sends the highly trained assassin on me without warning.”

Some Nikaria

“I’d like to say that those were simpler times but it seems nothing was ever that simple with us.” He brushes some of her hair from her eyes, “I could never forget these eyes though.”

“And yet you overlooked them when they were magnified,” she smirks, “If I remember correctly you didn’t have any recognition until my, affectionately called, glass bottle glasses were removed.”

“It was instantaneous if that’s any consolation,” he chuckles, “You moved and looked at me like the very first time we met.”

“Just maybe with a little more gunfire.”

“For you.”

“However you are far from a stupid man, Niko, I find it hard to believe that you couldn’t recognize me while wearing them.”

“Maybe I had hope that it wasn’t going to be you,” Niko pulls her in for a kiss, his hand staying in place behind her neck, “But it wouldn’t be much of a story to tell if you really were just an authenticator.”

“Hmm, did I at least scare you with my combat skills?”

“Scared? Of you?” She nods, biting her lower lip, “No. If anything my dear I was scared for you.”

“If I’d held a gun to you, would that have scared you at all?”

“Not at all,” he laughs.

“So what does scare you, Niko?” Aria sits herself up on her elbow, walking two fingers up his chest, “Is it aliens? The universe? Death? Spiders? Clowns?” She laughs when he gives her a quizzical look, “Everyone is scared of something.”

“Maybe I am not scared of anything,” he chuckles, “Did you ever consider that?”

“Aria please,” Nate calls out, grabbing onto her wrist, “I just need you to listen to me. Listen to everything I have to say and-. And if you still want me gone,” he takes a deep breath, swallowing, “then I’ll leave and I’ll never come back.”

“You won’t ever come back,” she asks, hiding the crack in her voice.

Nate nods, “I just couldn’t live without telling you how I feel.” He closes his eyes a moment, holding onto her hands, “Aria, I love you. I can’t remember a time since that first night at the bar where I didn’t feel something for you, even then the moment you startled me and saw you in person something changed. I started to change that day.”

“Could be a few weeks,” he shrugs, “Maybe a little less or a little more. But I will come back as soon as we have word on Azys Lla, I can promise you that.”

“I wouldn’t expect anything less from you,” Aymeric says, “See to your preparations and if you need any assistance, well, you know where to find me.” Demos gives a quick thanks and half bow leaving the chambers quickly, leaning against the door to slow his heart down, And it will be another thirty odd years before I do something like that again.

Denos is almost ready to make his way home, but there’s still one task at hand needing to be done….and he should have just asked to be let into the building. His arms burn as they hoist him up another level, hands going numb even as he shakes them out while taking a rest, Losing muscle strength is something they need to tell new conjurers. He looks up seeing the next place to get a hold of would require quite the jump up, but he’s also just below where he wants to be. Shouldn’t be too hard, He thinks checking how much room he has to back up, Just run and jump. With a quick nod he sprints, launching himself to grab onto the window above, legs still with enough motion to launch him higher to better grab onto some old iron work. He lets out a small cheer bringing himself up higher, fingers just brushing the edge of stone when he feels the inevitable slip of his foot. His grasp loosens enough to allow for his hand to slip away, the other not far behind with tired arms, “Oh fuck me.”

He lets out a short yell before his back slams into the ground. Demos groans as he looks himself over, mumbling the words to some healing spell that nearly eliminates the pain in his body. He lies there watching the few clouds pass by until he finally feels well enough to try standing again. There’s no hesitation as he climbs again, knowing much better where the footholds are, successfully reaching the top of the building. He evens his breathing as he looks around still hearing the hum of that blast, the shouts, and failed incantations until his eyes land on what he came back here for. A piece of black shield thrown when it finally broke, just barely shining in the late afternoon sun. Demos opens up the cloth sack on his belt collecting the pieces he finds one by one.

He’s nearly finished collecting when an object flies at his face. Demos reaches a hand up to catch it with ease, looking at it curiously. “You know if you wanted to come up here, all you had to do was ask,” Ser Aymeric says with a chuckle, walking closer to Demos as he stands, “That is the type of material you were collecting was it not?”
